F.L. The Demons have been flying and recorded some huge wins leading up to the bye and their rivals hope a week off has taken some wind out of their sails. The midfield has been leading the assault creating beautiful delivery to Brodie Foster and Brayden Kain, who both in supreme form. Kain in particular has strong from kicking 24 goals from the last four games, while he also played a big role in South East’s country championships triumph alongside teammates James Paprotny and Todd Reid. Coach Kain said his team was in a great space leading into the bye and wants to keep the good times rolling. “Our consistent players have been on the ball and the forward line has been on fire,” he said. “Our young guys have come along for the ride and we are really looking forward to the next few weeks to build up to a big finals campaign.” With a low percentage, the Cats must stop South from going big and exceeding triple figures like the previous clash at Island Park. The Victorians currently sit outside the top four, level on points with North, but well down on percentage, so cannot afford to endure another heavy defeat after being beaten up by Millicent in the previous home game. T h e i r w o r k a ga i n s t t h e Demons has not been great either having lost both encounters by 64 and 52 points. After an up and down period leading into the bye, Cats’ coach Kane Forbes would like to see some spirit as his team enters a season-defining passage.

DIARMIDCLEARY

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red Welcome back everyone to Island Park, the fortnight off has hopefully allowed some bruises and sprains to heal and everyone is right to getinto the game today against the Demons of South Gambier. Our last game against East Gambier provided the huge crowd with an exciting senior match that could have gone either way, the Cats accuracy in front of goals getting us over the line by 11 points. Best on Ground went to the super consistant Diarmid Cleary who would have had well over 40 possessions for the day, other Cats to be named in the best were Bill Galpin, Matt Killey, Dylan Ayton, Adam McKinnon and Jack Thompson. Joe McArleins Reserves had their first 100 plus point win in many years, East were a couple of players short. So it was great to see Cats, Chris McKinnon and Justin Beecher help the Doggies out. Better players for the Cats were Cory Wombwell, Pat Milich, Matthew Kurzman (7 Goals), Matthew Smith and Ranea King. The Under 16's had a hard fought 3 goal win, breaking the dogs shackles in the second half. Better players were Kaeden Talay, Sullivan Gibbs, Elwood Geary, Rhys Southern and Rufaro Makore. The Under 14's were unable to keep up with the Pups of East Gambier but they will learn from this game and have another opportunity for revenge in the

South Gambier

V

lead up to finals. Better Players were Reghan Parsons, Kirby Vise, Jedd Rhook, Brody Pratt and Samuel Patton.

Today we are holding the 1990 Senior WBFL Premiership Reunion, theres a luncheon on from 12:30 til 2 pm and apart from the legendary players of that year being here at Island Park I h av e b e e n i n fo r m e d t h a t D a n Lonergan is back again and will be MCing the event. Dan camped the night after the Grand Final last time, hoping to get the scoop on Brooks tribunal hearing I guess. The Cats are running around in specially made jumpers today, as a tribute to the clubs heritage and paying homage to those district clubs that have folded up but still remain in the hearts and minds of those that now call Island Park home. These special edition jumpers will be auctioned off tonight and will be a great talking point once framed and hanging in your pool room/shed, so get along and have a yarn about the days play or reminise about 1990, it sounds like it will be a ripper, CARN CATS! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Boonaroo, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Bendigo Bank, and Casterton Secondary College.

Red & White

Our first 2 games against North Gambier this season were tight contests and this one proved the same. North had a couple of goals on the board early from their big forward by controlling the midfield. It took our boys until late in the quarter and into the second to wrest control and take a 9-point lead into the main break and maintain it in the third. Both teams had their chances in the last stanza with our greater depth winning the day and extending the final lead to 24 points. Brayden Kain kicked 5 goals and Brodie Foster 3. Best players were James Paprotny, J o s h u a Wo o d a l l , H a m i s h Stevens, Chris Fallas, Brock Keding and Patrick Glynn.

The reserves was a 1-sided game with North fielding a number of thirds boys to make a game which we appreciated. 128-8 with best players Hugh Winterfield, Luke Foran, Ben Milstead, Robert Hein, Christopher Williams and Lloyd Pearce-Raisin.

The U18 team kept the game well in their control and gradually drew away to a nice 76-26 win. Best players Shem Wastell, Harry Fisher, Liam Turley, Samuel Sims, Will Boston and Lochlan Thiele. The U16 boys were only 5 points up at half time and needed to dig deep in the second half. They accomplished with 5 goals to zero to win 52-16. Best players Harry Wright, Angus Urquhart, Jed Sims, Rex Jones and Jacob Salmon. The U14 game was top versus bottom so a 69-3 score was not unexpected. Best players Lachlan Cameron, Brody Fox, William Attiwill and Oliver McCracken. 3 games left in the run home - we want to be improving all the time and playing our best footy come finals. We're heading to Island Park this week to help Casterton Sandford celebrate their 1990 premiership reunion. Best of luck to all Demons!

The Senior game started in beautiful conditions, but a nasty injury to a West player halted play for close to an hour. For the best interests of all those involved a decision was made to abandon the game and share the points. We wish Nathan Taylor all the best in his recovery, and a big thanks to all trainers and paramedics that assisted on the day. B o t h te a m s sta r te d t h e Ressies with some hard attack at the ball. Scruff Shanks was g e tt i n g f i rst u s e a t t h e s t o p p a g e s a n d o u r ke y forwards had plenty of space to lead into enabling Chanty, Digga and Dredgey to capitalise on some great delivery. West were dogged and determined throughout the game and surged hard in the last quarter, with our boys managing to hold on in a tight one. A lot of our players contributed and there were plenty of promising signs as we move to the business end of the season. The U18’s had a strong win with Alex Wez on fire up forward with 6 goals, being well fed by Eli Redman and Kallan Shanks. The U16’s suffered the clubs only loss in football for the day. Ashton Lindner and Harry Gibbs each kicked 2 goals to be named our best. The U14’s had a win to help consolidate their spot in the finals. Campbell Hateley kicked 2 goals with Teej Lawlor, Ari Robbins and Max Hunt our best. Special mention to our SE zone reps who competed in Whyalla over the weekend. The men’s team had a great win over Central in the final, and we were well represented b y J a c o b C a r g e r, D y l a n Bromley and Frazer Bradley while Kade Bradley made the trip as emergency and filled

It’s been a long but incredible journey to 100 games for H u tc h w h o, a f te r b e i n g captain and Mail Medallist in our drought breaking premiership year in 2018, went on to play for Adelaide’s SANFL side before being drafted by the GWS Giants and spending 2 years on an AFL list. We’ve loved having him back this year and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings. We welcome North today for our final home game of the year. Make sure you all get over to the club at the end of the day for one final feed from our talented kitchen volunteers.

WITH FROM THE ARCHIVES A WALK OWN MEMORY LANE PETER MARRETT: 1955 Mail Medal winner WHEN it was revealed in 1955 that the new Mount Gambier agronomist for the Department of Agriculture would be star Port Adelaide multipremiership ruckman Peter Marrett, East Gambier swooped. Marrett played 127 SANFL games with Port. He had been a premiership player with the club after starting as a 19-year-old in 1947. He was best afield in Port’s 1951 grand final win over North Adelaide when he dominated the rucking and aerial duels around the ground. He kicked 96 goals in his career at Port. While his league career was in full swing, so was his employment career and when he was transferred to the “bush”, East moved quickly to sign him as captaincoach. It would be the biggest coaching appointment at the Kennel since East signed former coach and star centreman Len Krause in about 1950. During the early 1950s East had their moments when they challenged Penola for the flag in 1952 and 1954 but lost both times and the feeling at McDonald Park was that Marrett could deliver that elusive flag to East. At 6’6” Marrett was the tallest player in the South East and Border Football League, just shading South ruckman Ernie “Oigle” Lewis at 6’5”. Although they didn’t know it then, when Marrett took charge East had just ticked past their “premiership window” with many of their stars starting to move into the veteran stage of their careers. They were in transition as a number of young players like Neville McKinnon and Kevin Howell would add to the talents of goal kicker Ron Doody, wingman Watty Case and defenders Colin Neale and David Roughana. While the Bulldogs failed to make any impression on the finals or the final four during 1955, Marrett showed his great ability with a stand-out season and won the SEBFL Mail Medal as the league’s best and fairest player. After East’s season had finished, footy was not yet over for Marrett as he and Whyalla’s Ray Whittacker, another former Port player, were brought back to Port in a sensational move to play in their 1955 SANFL finals campaign and helped Port win the flag by defeating Norwood by 63 points. Perhaps Port Adelaide’s late move to get Marrett back for the finals says much about how highly they rated the tall ruckman and had it not been for his keen desire to pursue his agronomy career he might easily have been a 200-plus game player for Port and won more premierships there. As has been the case throughout history with many SANFL players moving to the country, when Marrett went to East from the SANFL he was never “officially” cleared and under SANFL rules remained a Port player, hence they were able to bring him back to Adelaide to play in the finals series. Many years later, other local players such as Garry Sims (West Adelaide to Port MacDonnell via South Gambier) and Les McKinnon (West Adelaide to South Adelaide via

South Gambier) would have clearance problems from their original SANFL club, when they went to move to other clubs after returning to their former country club. Marrett would coach East again in 1956 and then moved to be captain-coach of South for one season in 1957 before returning to the Dogs and won the 1960 league goal kicking award. He played inter-league for the SEBFL right through that mid 1950s to 1960 era. What was interesting about Marrett was even though tall, he was a most accurate kick whether shooting for goal or stab passing to a leading teammate. He had a fluent, uncomplicated kicking style and his drop kicks from inside the 50 metre range were almost always on target. And when he kicked a goal there were no wild celebrations like the carry-on that happens in AFL today. Taking long strides, Marrett would simply stroll slowly back to full forward with a smile on his face the only tell-tale sign he was pleased with his efforts. When he won the SEBFL goal kicking award in 1960 he kicked 56 goals in an 18 minor round season. His fast leading and ability to take strong grabs in the goals square made him the best full forward of that year and it added another dimension to a top career as a ruckman during the 1950s. Another point of interest was that when Marrett returned to East in 1958 former Melbourne ruckman Stan Rule was in his second year as captain-coach and wore number 14 so Marrett retained the number one jumper he had when he was captain-coach in 195556. When Ralph Rogerson replaced Rule in 1959, arriving as a 21-year-old state player from North Adelaide, Rogerson wore the number three jumper, leaving Marrett to finish his career in 1960 wearing his original number one jumper. He always wore a long sleeved guernsey. Marrett was also a highly regarded cricketer with South Gambier, being captain during the 1950s and played in several South premierships including the 1974-75 Barber Shield premiership – a team which contained many players who had been coached by Marrett when they were in junior ranks. He also played Whitty Trophy inter-town cricket for both Mount Gambier and Tatiara. He was also a highly regarded and successful junior cricket coach and many of South’s stars of the 1960s and 70s can thank Marrett for his coaching ability to bring the best out of them. His brother Bob and sons Paul and Murray also played league footy with Port Adelaide. Murray was a dual premiership player with East Gambier in 1975 and 76 and like his father did in 1957 later played with South Gambier in the early 1980s. Daughter Maureen was rated as one of the greatest local women basketball players of all time who was a multi-A grade league best and fairest winner and premiership player with Roos and Panthers, where she also coached and was a player, captain and coach of Mount Gambier’s multi-state title winning town side during the 1970s and 80s. He was also an A1 tennis player. FOOTNOTE: When I was aged about 11 and under the watchful eye of Peter Marrett’s coaching in cricket, like many youngsters at South I spent time at the

GREENWOOD Marrett household in Playford Street, Mount Gambier, listening to and being in awe of Peter’s coaching instructions or his views on the game of cricket or football. In those days footballers wore sprigs or stops that were either leather with a nail punched through the centre into the boot or aluminum sprigs again attached by a series of nails around the base of the sprig. Both types were dangerous if not punched down and smoothed over properly and that is why umpires would visit the rooms before the game and run the palms of their hands over the bottom of each player’s boots. Some players would file down the aluminum sprigs to a sharp point, making them illegal, very dangerous and used them as a “weapon”. Often at the Marrett household Peter’s wife Sheila would tell how opposing ruckmen, lacking Peter’s height and ability, would jump into his lower leg and run their sprigs down his shin, gouging through the skin and into his shin bone leaving blood seeping through his red and black socks. This happened week after week. Peter was dismissive of his wife’s claims, saying it was just part of the game, yet it showed the measure of the man that Peter never complained, always played the ball and let his skills show his opposition how the game should be played. He was a legend of both footy and cricket and a great gentleman both on and off the field. • PHOTO: Peter Marrett pictured after it was announced he had won the SEBFL Mail Medal in 1955.

MATCH REPORTS EAST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD The reigning premiers are star ng to look ominous as they build towards the 2022 finals. Missing key defender Bo Creek, star mid courter Emily Hunter and in form goaler Sarah Lock, the Bulldogs were dominant in their victory over Casterton Sandford, se ng the tone with an 18-3 opening quarter and never taking their foot off the pedal. Led by consistent mid courter Tarsh McCallum, with Teagan Gray taking the goal a ack bib, experienced mid courter Brooke Hicks on the a acking wing and Sharna McKinnon filling the defensive role, the Bulldogs were never troubled. The Cats did hit back hard in the second, winning the quarter by two but it was one way traffic again in the second half, with McCallum finding great connec on with Amryn Bosko, who finished accurately, ne ng 44 from 50 in a stunning display of composure. Talented junior Indi Dwyer earned her A Grade debut in the final quarter, taking the wing defence bib as Tyne Bosko moved to centre and McCallum took her preferred wing a ack role and the teenager acqui ed herself well in her first taste of senior ac on. Scarle Jarrad was again the Cats nest with her hard two way running, while Madalene Cleary worked over me at goal a ack despite the lack of supply in terms of scoring opportuni es. Morgan Amy enjoyed a rare run at goal defence and combining with Tyne Bosko and McKinnon, there were plenty of turnovers created as East con nued building momentum as the Bulldogs look to maintain their spot in the top four and a shot at back to back tles.

NORTH GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER It was absolutely a must win clash for the Demons and a er three ght quarters, South Gambier made it two wins from three ou ngs in 2022 against North Gambier, keeping their slim finals hopes alive. It was all about scoring in the opening quarter, which ended at 19-all, with both shoo ng duos on song, North missing one for the quarter and South three. At hal ime North had a one goal advantage and at three quarter me the Tigers lead was three. Whatever stand in coach Felicity Walker said at three quarter me, though, worked with the Demons domina ng the final quarter to secure a seven goal victory. The final quarter dominance was built on a vastly improved defensive effort by South, with Ellie Bouchier and Grace Edwards denying Caroline Wakefield and Macey Griffith me and space and crea ng plenty of turnover ball. The good news for South was Lara Munro was on song in the final quarter and her 15 straight ensured the Demons dominance was reflected on the scoreboard. The Tigers were missing first choice defensive duo Mel Renko and Zahra Crough but it was only in the final quarter that the teenage defensive duo of Elyse Willoughby and Lauran Norman were unable to limit South’s scoring. The match up between North’s Brianna Walters and South’s Megan Reid was one of the best on the day, and as the centres broke even, Ash Kalantarian stepped up for the Tigers to con nually connect with Wakefield. Bouchier was cri cal for the Demons, especially in the final quarter, while Munro’s accurate finishing was also a key to the win.

DENTON’S

MILLICENT V WEST GAMBIER A er a ght opening half, Millicent put in a strong third quarter to set up what was a 10 goal victory over West Gambier. In what many believe to be the most likely grand final, both sides were at full strength as they looked to get the upper hand ahead of the 2022 finals. As expected, the respec ve shooters were front and centre, with Tabatha Sanderson returning to the court for the Saints for the first me in a couple of weeks and Sarah Ri er providing a strong target at the other end for the Roos. Sanderson was rusty early on the finish but her second half saw her convert 29 from 30 as the Saints powered to victory. Demi Verbena has been having an outstanding season and she was again a key with her speed, ability to find space and accurate delivery to Sanderson. Ri er was also at her accurate best, finishing the match with 46 from 52. West enjoyed a one goal lead at the first change and it was the Saints by one at the half. Perfect shoo ng from the Saints in the third quarter – 19 from 19 – saw the home side get value for every turnover created from the defensive line of Hannah Nitschke, Por a Mc Rae and Lisa Duldig, who moved to wing defence for the second half, leaving Georgia Clarke to run the centre and it proved a decisive quarter, taking the lead out to seven before the final margin of 10. The two sides have now played three quality matches in the minor rounds, se ng the scene for an intriguing finals series. Tara Bryant’s hard running through the middle was again pivotal for the Roos, who would be looking to up the ante with the defensive pressure next me the two meet, with turnovers a li le hard to come by in this round 13 clash.

ROUND PREVIEWS MILLICENT V NORTH GAMBIER Coming off a strong win over West Gambier, Millicent will be looking to make another statement ahead of the impending finals with a strong win over North Gambier this weekend. The Tigers have been arguably the hardest read in 2022 due to player unavailability and aside from Caroline Wakefield and Macey Griffith in goals and Brianna Walters in centre, there have been mul ple combina ons u lised by the Tigers. While the lack of con nuity has prevented North from developing a strong team chemistry, it has allowed them to blood rising talent including Lauran Norman, who has impacted in every area of the court, Alysha Coon, who is a dynamic defender, Cara Nulty, a smart mid courter and Elyse Willoughby, a tenacious defensive player. Wakefield and Griffith have developed a strong combina on in the shoo ng circle and will need to be at their best this weekend with the Saints backline consistently ge ng the job done. Por a McRae and Hannah Nitschke are ght checking in the shoo ng circle, while the pressure from Lisa Duldig and Georgia Clarke on the feeders is second to none, meaning Walters, Ash Kalantarian and Griffith will need to be pa ent with ball in hand as they look to open up Wakefield in space. At the other end, Tabatha Sanderson returned strongly in round 13 a er a couple of weeks sidelined and Demi Verbena has been super consistent in 2022 with her accurate feeding and long range shoo ng. The connec on with the mid court, including the unassuming Paige Nitschke, has been flawless in recent weeks and Walters, Libby Morgan and whoever takes the defensive circle bibs, will need to work over me to slow the Saints slick ball movement and try and force errors on the feed into Sanderson. Mel Renko and Zahra Crough, when they have played together, have shown promise as a defensive combina on but their ou ngs as a duo have been few and far between and it is hard to mount a case for the Tigers to cause the upset.

CASTERTON SANDFORD V SOUTH GAMBIER The Cats are coming off a couple of stronger scoring performances against the top two sides and will be looking to make life tough for South Gambier at Island Park this weekend. The Demons are fresh from a strong victory over North Gambier and while an inferior percentage will likely cost the young South ou it a finals berth, they must win this game to even remain in the hunt. Casterton Sandford’s shoo ng combina on of Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary is star ng to work well and if they can generate more scoring opportuni es, they will certainly keep the scoreboard cking over. Scarle Jarrad has clearly been the pick of the Cats in 2022 and her hard running in the mid court will be cri cal, as will the speed of Makayla Hutchins and the young South mid court of Megan Reid, Ruby Richter and Tully McShane will need to be at their best to curb the influence of Jarrad and Hutchins and will need to be pa ent with ball in hand. The defensive end of the Cats court has the task ahead of it in what is a ba le of some of the best young talent in the associa on. Ebany Jarrad, Charlo e Rice and Caeleigh Humphries are ght checking, tenacious defenders and they will need to be at their best to stem the scoring of Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan – the South shoo ng duo coming off a stunning final quarter onslaught against North. Munro is a strong aerial performer and doesn’t shy away from the long shot, while Duncan’s smarts in delivering the ball to her shoo ng partner, as well as se ng up space in the circle is impressive and she is an accurate finisher. Tess Marra is the X factor for the Cats and she will no doubt take a defensive post and could well be given the job on Munro at some stage. At the defensive end for South, Grace Edwards and Ellie Bouchier con nue to build as a defensive combina on and they will create enough turnover ball to give the Demons the edge.

WEST GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER The Malseed Park clash between West and East Gambier looms as the match of the day as the Roos look to rebound from a round 13 loss to Millicent and the reigning premiers look to build towards a finals campaign. The two sides have had polar opposite seasons. The Roos have put out a consistent combina on for much of the season and are playing with the precision that comes from having built strong team chemistry, while the Bulldogs have played arguably one match tops with their preferred star ng seven and are just star ng to build a semblance of momentum as the finals approach. West has no weaknesses. The shoo ng combina on of Sarah Ri er and Lisa McGregor has ne ed almost 900 goals and they are both accurate finishers. The defensive line of Amy Cram and Jade Ri er brings the perfect blend of ght checking, pressure over the shot, rebounding strength and willingness to hunt the intercep on, while the mid court of Zoe Malseed, Tara Bryant and Mikayla Horrigan are hard running, both good speed and are smart with ball in hand. East’s shoo ng combina on of Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko has had a couple of consecu ve matches together now and are star ng to gel as a duo and do test opposi on defenders as one of the few genuine moving goal circles, while the delivery and work rate of Tarsh McCallum and Emily Hunter in the mid court looms large for the West mid court to quell. Bo Creek and Morgan Amy are a strong defensive pairing and they will be looking to pressure out front from Tyne Bosko and Hunter to assist them in stopping Ri er and McGregor securing too much easy ball. West is up to their necks in the premiership race, while East needs to take a scalp soon from the top two to boost belief that they can s ll defend their 2021 tle but in the end, the Roos will take the points in a ght, physical struggle, with Sarah Ri er’s long range accuracy again a key factor.

Bakes was faultless as per usual but got a case of the 'what about me', when she stayed in the one position the whole game. When the coach goes away partying, the managers will do what they please! C Grade Millicent 51 def West 33 Best Players - Kalli Brown & Claudia Pratt McCourts: Kalli Brown Pierina’s: Nicola Batten We started off with a slow start but we pulled ourselves together and continued to improve throughout the game. A great game by the girls with all players pulling their weight. It was nice to finally have all our players this week! slow start from the girls with a few players missing. however the girls got going in the second quarter, with some really strong and fast pace netball. defence worked well together to turn many balls over with transition down the court showing some strong drives from the girls. Poppy Venn from 15’s showed talent with a strong game in goals. looking forward to finishing the season off strong!

Great shooting by Molly and Mylee and well fed by Poppy & Piper. Jaimie, Mia and Mackinlee forced errors with their great footwork and reading of the play. We look forward to welcoming Matti and Edie back on court this week. 13Bs Millicent 30 def West 9 Best Players- Imogen Hales & Amarlie Thomson Dentons: Indi Coghlan Fasta Pasta: Courtney Sigston The girls took west head on this week, and played a strong game all the way through. The team worked together seamlessly to convert the turnovers created, and with Keelie Linder taking on the coaching role for this weekend, did an amazing job. Well done to the girls, and heading in strong for the game against North. 13As Millicent 49 def West 15 Best Players - Ashlee Dean & Bell Coghlan Ducky’s: Bell Coghlan KFC: Ashlee Dean A strong win for the team against West. Both teams played tight defensive games with our goalies having to work the ball around the circle a bit more than usual to find space. It was great to see what we practiced at training being applied on court and we welcomed back Ashlee in the team after a few weeks away. Her clever positioning in the circle and accurate shooting earned her being named as best player and Bell 2nd best using her speed and defensive pressure all over the court to give us plenty of the ball. 11s Millicent 26 def West 8 Best players- Olivia Hales & Hope Wilson Mcdonald’s: Olivia Hales Denton’s: Hope Wilson

Under 11’s North 2 vs South 27 We played South today they have improved and were strong at both ends of the court. We started well with a follow on from last week’s game with some good defence and passing forward while leading down court. Unfortunately, we lost our momentum and south took control and won the game. Some great first efforts from Stella and Piper saw them receive the awards today. Each week we improve with new skills that impacts on our team game so keep up the good work. Best players: Stella Yeates and Piper Mulraney

whole court was excellent, securing us some well-earned turnovers. In attack we played with poise and control, taking the extra pass when required to ensure we worked the ball in our goalies who were finishing off nicely. Unfortunately, our momentum and rhythm didn’t continue into the second half and South took advantage of this, gaining control on the game and pulling away on the scoreboard. Despite the final result, there were some great passages of play and girls should be very proud of their first half efforts. Our goal moving forward to to maintain the control and rhythm for the full game. Best players: Alysha Coon and Lauran Norman

Under 13A’s North 49 vs South 3 We started strong against South. Our attacking side had good rhythm and moved the ball quickly down the court for our goalies to score. Our defence also got good intercepts and used it to our advantage. Looking at the scoreboard, we were far ahead hence making changes in quarter 3. That caused us to lose some focus and momentum and we had to regroup during the break. We picked up in quarter 4, had strong leads and played good netball again. Best players: Piper Lucas and Amelia Adam

C Grade North 27 vs South 57 A tough game for C grade this week but the girls put up a good fight. The first half was relatively even, with North picking up lots of intercepts and putting a consistent pressure on South. South took a hold of the game in the third quarter and had a very strong lead. Despite this, the North girls kept fighting right to the end and finished strong. Best players: Justin Forrest and Georgia Wehrmann

Under 13B’s North 42 vs South 9 Our girls played excellent netball this weekend and it was a great team effort by everyone from GS to GK. There was good defensive pressure and turnovers which we capitalised on. Our passes were accurate and the girls moved the ball with precision down to the court to our goalies. Accurate shooting by Carey Grivell and Jenna Baron kept the scoreboard ticking. Indeed, a game to build our confidence with as we are going forward. Best players: Grace Collins and Jenna Baron Under 15 A’s North 55 vs South 17 A solid game from all members this week against South. Playing consistent 4 quarters has been a focus for our girls and each member played their role. It was good to see Macey Griffith, Cara Nulty and Elodie Adam accurate under the ring again with the assistance of our mid court. Ava Collins and Ruby Mitchell were dynamic getting loose balls. The girls are focused on improving each week and will be prepared for the challenge of Millicent next game. Best players: Jayme Young and Elodie Adam Under 15 B’s North 29 vs South 23 Another win notched up but still not our best netball. Consistency is key and working on committing to the full four quarters is still on top of our list. Great passages of play into our goalies and our centre passes are coming along nicely. Remember girls, train like we play and the season will end on a high. Best players: Claire Mitchell and Tillie McEachern Under 17’s North 29 vs South 60 We started strong against South and for majority of the first half we were goal for goal. B Grade North 50 vs South 50 Another intense game against South, with the results being a draw. We started off extremely slow allowing South to score the first 7 goals of the match. We had a lot of catching up to do and to the girl’s credit we managed to peg the score back quarter by quarter. We may have not played the way we normally do or come out with the win, but the girls did put up a great fight to get the score back to even. Well done girls! Best players: Georgia McInerney and Briana Lush A Res North 57 vs South 50 Fantastic game this week by our girls. We started off the first quarter slow, but we were able to play the remaining 3 quarters with confidence, intensity and purpose. Great defensive efforts by Ava, Alysha and Alice, followed by hard running through the midcourt from Amanda and lovely feeding into the goal circle to Cara and Riley. Very positive win to lead us into the last few games of the season. Best players: Amanda O’Shaughnessy and Alysha Coon A Grade North 61 vs South 68 It was an important game for us against south and with a different defence end again, we were looking to put scoreboard pressure on early. It was a very even half with the score changing many times. We were up going into the last quarter, but unfortunately couldn’t hang on to win this one. Elyse worked hard defence and Brianna ran the court with a high work rate. Ash was strong on the wing with Macey continuing her improved efforts each week. This makes it close to stay on the top four, but hopefully we will get a win in the next few weeks. Best players: Ash Kalantarian and Elyse Willoughby (Halloran Diesel)

West Gambier Blue & Red Hoping everyone had a nice week off as we head into the pointy end of the season. Congratulations to Halle Boult who played her 50th game at Millicent! Results against Millicent were: U/11 - The under 11s played a great game against a very skilled Millicent team. We had a few girls away which meant some of the girls played the 6 quarters. Each quarter we improved which was fantastic. It was a great game to watch with all 8 girls giving 100%. Millicent defeated West 26 - 8. 1st Best Player: Chaneil Cowland, 2nd Best Player: Mackenna Povey. U/13B - Our enthusiasm and excitement for this weeks game didn’t convert and didn’t work as we planned, 3rd quarter we were able to come out firing but unfortunately Millicent’s neat playing for the whole game got them over the line. Excellent work all game from Ella and Sammy in the mid court. We have lots to work on and we hopefully can come out firing in the next few games. Millicent defeated West 30 - 9. 1st Best Player: Claire Hunter, 2nd Best Player: Ella McKenny. Game Day Vouchers: Ella McKenny & Samantha Foster U/13A - Once again we came up against a very experienced and polished Millicent team. Alice and Analeigh worked tirelessly in defence, but unfortunately we didn’t have the intensity in attack that we have enjoyed over the last month. We will look to reset over the break. Millicent defeated West 49 - 15. 1st Best Player: Alice Allen, 2nd Best Player: Lila Pearson. Game Day Vouchers: Alice Allen & Analeigh Anderson U/15B - This week our girls hit the road to Millicent in some classic south east weather which saw them come out bruised and battered, even a black eye thrown in the mix. In what was a physical game we saw all the girls really show some grit and determination which was great to see in the lead up to finals. Holly was a stand out back in WD shaking things up and supporting Macy and Zara in the defensive end. Annabel and Demi had their work cut out for their legs in the mid court and worked hard to get in front of the ball and move it into Miley and Ava in the goals who both had to step up and constantly change their play to get goals on the board. Well done girls, let's bring the season home strong. Millicent defeated West 27 - 21. 1st Best Player: Macy Pearson, 2nd Best Player: Holly Jackson U/15A - In perfect netball conditions, our girls battled hard against a quality opposition! We had some really great passages of play across the court, we just need to continue to work for that consistency! Thanks Macy and Miley for benching for us today! Award winners: 1st award Maggy who continued to create some great turnovers and was a solid option in attach and 2nd award to Hayley who continued to work hard all game even in the unfamiliar position of C! U/17 - Another tough game for the West U17’s but the girls still played a strong clean game. I keep saying it but the effort my defence girls put in week in and week out is to be commended. Maddie and Hannah are playing so well together and not giving up until the final whistle. Supported by Kirra in WD who always puts in 100%. Halle, Charlotte, Stevi and Amity controlled the centre court in the WA and C positions working the ball down into our goalies. Jordy was back after a week off and back in the goals with Aleisha who once again put in a brilliant performance for us. We ended up going down 65 to 32 but we battled it out for the whole game . I couldn’t ask for more. Millicent defeated West 65 - 32. 1st Best Player: Aleisha Pearson, 2nd Best Player: Maddelyn Millich. Game Day Vouchers: Maddie Millich & Aleisha Pearson.

C Grade - A tough game this week with two key defenders out and some injuries part taking in a complex game for our team. Lots of great plays throughout the day but unfortunately we couldn’t walk away with the win. A huge thank you to Macy for stepping up to play and to Halle for sitting bench, we appreciate you both supporting us. We look forward to finishing the remainder of the season off strong, and utilising our teams potential to hopefully scrape into finals! Millicent defeated West 51 - 33. 1st Best Player: Emily Sutherland, 2nd Best Player: Mikaela Campbell. B Grade - This weeks game started out well but the wheels slowly began to fall off in the second quarter. At times the ball was worked down the court exactly as practiced and the rewards came. Maddy and Courtney worked tirelessly all game and never gave up. Special mention to Bianca thrown in at GK for a quarter and threw everything she had at that. Can’t wait to watch the replay. Millicent defeated West 77 - 24. 1st Best Player: Kristy Dolan, 2nd Best Player: Bianca Jackway. Game Day Vouchers: Courtney Grosser and Kellie Buck. A Reserve - With finally having a full team and been able to have a good warm up the girls started off strong against the undefeated Millicent girls with Rachael really driving that defensive end. Picking up a lot of intercept and rebounds. Our mid court brought the ball down beautifully for our goalies who then rewarded the girls for all their hard work. Well done girls on your 21 goal win… Millicent defeated by West 29 - 50. 1st Best Player: Tayla Wilson-Smith, 2nd Best Player: Claire Hunter. A Grade - It's hard to believe we only have 3 more games before finals - where has the season gone? We had some great passages o f p l ay t h ro u g h o u t t h e ga m e b u t unfortunately we were just not consistent enough. Millicent played a very polished game and we know the standard of netball required to be a threat come finals. Millicent defeated West 66 - 56. 1st Best Player: Tara Bryant, 2nd Best Player: Sarah Ritter This week we welcome East to Malseed Park. Good luck to all our teams.
