2022 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME ROUND 12 - JULY 2

Blachut celebrates in style North Gambier’s Nick Blachut celebrated his 250th game against East Gambier last weekend

NORTH GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER CASTERTON SANDFORD v MILLICENT SOUTH GAMBIER v EAST GAMBIER

GAME PREVIEW North Gambier v West Gambier Only one game separates North Gambier, West Gambier and Casterton Sandford in the fight for finals and the events of this Saturday could have a huge say on the end result. The big game of the 12th round of the 2022 Bendigo Western Border Football League will be at Vansittart Park where the Tigers and Roos face off. Both teams are currently in the finals and are beaming after important wins last weekend, but need to keep up the momentum going forward. The two clashes earlier this year suggest fans could be in for another enthralling contest with the bragging rights currently split. A return to Vansittart Park for West rekindles memories of Daron McElroy’s and Mitch Cornolo’s heroics from round 2 where they pulled an unlikely win out of the fire. But the Tigers also have reasons to be confident having just disposed of East quite comfortably and outmatched the Roos away from home by 21 points in round 7. Their big trump card is Sam Stafford, who is the form player of the competition at the moment having kicked 16 goals in his last two games and another big haul will bring him on the cusp of the 250-goal milestone. West Gambier assistant Coach Nathan Lewis said slowing Stafford will not be easy, but feels his team has what it takes to push for the premiership points. “We should be full strength and we feel like we match up well,” he said. “They have a few guys who kick goals like Sam Stafford and we have few players who could be capable of playing him like Lewis Lane and Todd Mcpartlan who have been great for us down there. “They are always a hard to beat.” For North Gambier it is also a big game to send a message to its rivals that third spot is only theirs and coach Ben Hardy believes the next block of games is a big period in the season. “We will be coming up against contested ball

winnings sides over the next three weeks,” he said. “We do not stand for getting bullied around the ball like what happened last week (against Casterton Sandford) and we have changed those things. “So hopefully we can match it on the inside because that is where the game will be won I think. “If we can do that for long enough we know that our forward line can take care it and I rate our back six as the best in the competition.” Casterton Sandford v Millicent After losing to two of their respective nearest rivals, Casterton Sandford and Millicent feel it will be important to sing the team song again at Island Park. The Saints in particular will be determined to regain some pedigree after receiving a touchup by South Gambier in the top of the table battle at home. Despite the big defeat, Kade Bradley, Dylan Bromley and Eli Redman had big games and will be turned to as Millicent aims to rally back to life. That result makes this road trip all the more important, but the visitors cannot take it lightly after the Cats came within four points of snatching victory in the previous contest. Casterton Sandford would have been disappointed with letting last week slip against West Gambier. The Cats were up at half time, but a poor third erm allowed the Roos to jump free and skip to an unassailable lead. Jack Thompson and Hamish McCrae have shown good form, while Adam McKinnon provided run in the middle. If the Victorians can hurt the young Saints side early and make it a contested battle across the four quarters, this could be another intriguing contest.

F.L. South Gambier v East Gambier East Gambier – a team winless for nine weeks – faces the dauting task of taking on South Gambier on home turf at full flight. The Demons have only lost one game and appear to be nearing top gear with big names starting to comeback and helping the whole team play super aggressive football. With sunny skies forecast for Saturday it could be perfect conditions for South to go on another charge and setup another big win after winning the previous two clashes by 44 and 65 points respectively. Despite East not presenting the strongest case to challenge the Demons, coach Brayden Kain said it is an important fixture for his team to continue building its devastating brand. “The job is not done, so that is the challenge we will have over the next few weeks,” he said. “We expect Millicent to be our most competitive opposition but the rest of the year will not take care of itself and we need to keep continuing to make these statements and put sides away to maintain this momentum. “At times last year and early this year we would get some momentum kicking a few goals we would just think ‘it is just another win because we expected to beat these teams’. “But over the last few weeks we stripped it right back to basics and have been focused on brining that energy and enthusiasm back. “This is where the excitement has come from and that is our nonnegotiable barometer and the start of each game and these kids are not afraid to make a mistake and we are playing risk free footy. “It is very exciting to see the football we are playing at the moment, so I am really looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store.”

JAYDEN ELDRIDGE

CHRIS WILLIAMS

Saturday was a big day at the “Kennel” where all the Bulldogs saluted their pack leader Jayden Eldridge, who achieved the rare milestone of playing his A Grade 200th game. The current co-coach known as “Shog” was chaired off the ground in emo onal scenes in front of friends and family at the club he loves East Gambier. Despite the scoreboard not being quite as memorable with archrival North Gambier comple ng a comfortable 64-point win, Eldridge said it will be a day will be replayed in his mind forever with the milestone being the latest on a long list of achievements by his family at McDonald Park. “The result was disappoin ng, but on a personal note to play 200 games is something that I will hold pre y close to my heart,” he said. “My parents and grandparents have been at East for a long me, so to run through the banner and look out around the ground seeing so much support was amazing. “Then to be chaired off was extra special.” Eldridge’s A Grade journey started back in 2010 when he was s ll a junior footballer. A er the going down to the Demons in the 2009 WBFL Grand Final, the Bulldogs went through a similar transi on period to the one they are walking through at the moment and a number of youngsters were blooded. “Shog” was one of the most impressive debutantes and quickly became a regular fixture in the top side playing 15 games in his maiden season. “A er the 2009 grand final the club had a massive walkout and lost a lot of people so many of us juniors had to come up and fill those spots,” Eldridge said. “It was a home game against South and we ended up winning my first game. “We got thrown in the deep end and got the odd touch up, but it benefited our younger genera on and fast track yourself as a 16-year-old playing on some pre y good players. “It helped me a lot in my career watching and learning from what the opposi on used to do.” It did not take long for the young pup to become one of the top dogs playing week in week out and established himself as one of the premier players off the hal ack line in the region. Just four years a er his raw debut he won the red jacket as East Gambier’s best player in 2014 for the first me. Eldridge also took his career beyond the Limestone Coast playing in the sapping heat of Darwin in the high-level NTFL and represen ng the SA Country team at Perth Stadium in 2019. But the highlight will forever be the breakthrough 2017 WBFL premiership where East overcame North Gambier on an unforge able day at Island Park. The Bulldogs also con nued their purple patch and returned to the big stage 12 months later, but lost to Millicent this me at McDonald Park. “Probably through those years I was at my peak,” he said. “I went to Darwin to try and be er myself up there, but I will never forget those years playing in grand finals because that is what it is all about. “It a long me coming and was a special moment I will look back on for the rest of my career.” Currently Eldridge has never been busier on and off the football field being the cocoach of the A Grade team alongside Ma Scanlon. But at age 29, “Shog” s ll believes he has a lot to give in the future. “I have been doing a bit more work in the midfield than just the hal ack flank and I take my hat off to everyone who is a playing coach because it is a tough gig,” he said. “This year has been a li le bit disappoin ng, but we will never give up. “We are looking at the future which looks bright and I have a good support group around me on the bench. “I want to thank the club for giving me an opportunity to coach and they have always supported me in doing what I want to do, “My family and parents have been my backbone in helping me get to where I am today.”

This Saturday will see South Gambier's stalwart Chris Williams play his 300th club game when they take on East Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park.

Willow came to the Demons in 2005 under Coach Mick Ryan. The following year saw Chris collect his first reserves best and fairest award. His first few years with the club found Chris in and out of the senior side but his hard work earned him a spot in the senior premiership team under coach Jon Copping in 2009. 2010 saw Chris have another year in and out of the senior side but came away with his second reserves best and fairest and Premiership under Coach Daniel Stra ord. From 2011 to 2021 Chris was a permanent member of the senior side and collected another senior flag in 2015 under coach Bre Exelby. Chris's team first a tude and strong work ethic on the field and his dedica on to the club off the field led him to be a part of the senior leadership group before being named vice captain in 2013. In 2018 a er celebra ng his 200th A grade game, Chris was rewarded life membership at South Gambier. Willow can be described as a loyal, hard- working South Gambier demon through and through. His consistency and never say die a tude is what makes Chris a highly respected team mate and club person. Chris celebrates this huge Milestone game with his family by his side, wife Alex, daughter Savannah and son Luca as his biggest fans! On behalf of the South Gambier Football Club members and supporters, We congratulate Chris Williams on this massive effort with this highly regarded club achievement.

Seems like a long time since we played at Vansittart Park, but we are back this week for our annual sponsors day. We are very lucky and the envy of other clubs with our loyal sponsors, so let’s put in a good performance for them. Some reward for effort last week in most grades v East, making the beer in the remodelled kennel club taste just that bit better. The A grade learnt from last week and after again getting off to hot start, continued on with it. Sam Stafford led the way with 9 goals, with other best players being Nick McInerney, Brett Shepherdson, Justin McConnell, Jake Schutz and Hamish Telford. Some big games coming up which will have a big bearing on the finals!

Braithwaite and Reece McLaughlin both kicked 4 to be named the best players. They were joined by Brodie Allen, Darcy Arthurson, Brady Dethmore and Ned Haywood.

The u16s are on a bit of a roll, this week accounting for East which should go a long way to ensuring they play finals. Aaron Dally is having a huge year and was again named best, along with Seb Doody, Vince Dellorefice, Jack Leishman and Alex Bruce.

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red Malseed Park and the West Gambier faithful certainly put on a good show, we enjoyed all that was provided for us but it was a shame we couldn't come away with a few more wins. The Under 14s got us off to a good start with a 15 point win over the Roos, B.O.G. Was the Dominator from Dartmoor Brody Pratt, Jack Rhook was our multiple goal kicker abd others to be named among the better players were Archie Lane, Billy Rhook, Jedd Rhook and Samuel Patton. The under 16s had a red hot go but couldn't quite match the Roos on the scoreboard, going down by 22 points. Better players on the day were Kaeden Talay, Rufaro Makore, Elwood Geary, Dylan Munro and Rhys Southern.

V

Tom Foster, Diarmid Cleary and Nick Schembri.

Today we welcome Millicent to Island Park, if we can get all the Cats firing we should see some Super Snags going through the big sticks, after the game we have presentations, meals and then an Ipod shuffle night, including the wearing of Undesirable Shirts, where you can win $50 for the most undesirable shirt. You can buy a song for $10 and there will be prizes throughout the night, including $250 for the last song, see Billy or Diarmid with your song choice and Ca$h. CARN CATS! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Boonaroo, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Bendigo Bank, and Casterton Secondary College

T h e Re s s i e s p u t p l e n t y o f pressure on the Roos, forcing Upcoming Events: them wide, but still fell short by July 2nd - iPod Shuffle night almost 5 goals, better luck next July 23rd – Premiership Reunion week Cats. July 31st – Sunday Market August 6th – Live Music The Seniors were in the box seat at half time but found the going a bit difficult in the second half, going down by 3 goals. Better players were Jack Thompson, Hamish McCrae, Dillan Carlin,

A shade of yellow fell over McLaughlin Park during the Senior game, and although it didn’t impact the result it certainly diminished the spectacle for most of those in attendance. South were far too good when it mattered, but the see sawing nature of results between these two teams over the past few seasons sets up some further enthralling encounters later in the year. Bomma was again a beacon of light down forward with 3 goals and our fearless skipper in Cargs managed 2. Our backline, led by Box Head and Tinks, battled hard all day, Eli Redman played another eye catching game and it was great to see Chipper finally hit the park and show the value he will be to the team in the run home. The Ressies fought hard all day against the powerhouse South outfit and managed to keep the final margin to the smallest it had been between the two sides this year, so a small win for our boys. Harry Willis was our only goal kicker

Millicent Red, Black & White

with 2 and also our best player, while Pratty gave the league leading goalkicker a hard time all day and a couple of the old heads in Nat and Brad continued their good form. To continue a disappointing day for the home club, our under 18’s, 16’s and 14’s also went down. To put a positive spin on the day, it was a great opportunity for all grades to see where they were at against the top team and they now know what it is going to take if we want to turn the tables next time we meet. On the back oval our 12A’s managed to buck the trend and get football’s only win for the day.

As I said last week games against Millicent have become something of a grudge match for us especially after that club had the better of us in the 2021 senior grand final. When our clubs are top 2 on the ladder from seniors to U16 grade it adds an extra edge to each game. On this occasion we were good enough and fortunate enough to get a win in every grade but there's a still a long way to go in 2022. The seniors started with the benefit of a strong breeze and capitalised to be 19 points ahead at quarter time then managed to stop Millicent scoring a major in the second quarter. 7 goals to 3 in the third term meant the game was well in our keeping and the players kept the pressure on in the last to run out 57 point winners. Coach Brayden Kain maintained his lead on the league goalkicking ladder with 6 goals, Colby Munro kicked 4 and Brodie Foster 3. Hamish Stevens was dominant on his wing and clearly best player, Emerson Marks' development has been crucial in the m i d f i e l d , To d d Re i d wa s impassable at CHB, Joshua Woodall is running into form and fitness, James Paprotny has had a stellar season and Colby Munro has improved our forward line with his football smarts. With a couple of the league's best players to return to the Millicent team in coming weeks they will be tougher to beat next time.

The reserves had one of their closer games for the season winning 69-16. Ethan Chuck is giving the senior selectors something to think about, o t h e r b e st p l aye rs we re Connor O'Reilley, Elliott Fisher, Ben Milstead, Christopher Williams and Luke Foran.

After being really challenged in the third term the U18s gradually took control to draw away 53-29 winners. Liam Turley and Nelson Forbes kicked 3 goals each and best players were Lochie Thiele, Ethan Sims, Nelson Forbes, Will Boston, Sam Sims and Harry Mitchell. Scores were tight at quarter time in the U16 game, from there the South lads kicked away to win 65-7. Best players were Dean Harten, Charlie Lockwood, Lewis Sigley, Jed Sims and Angus Urquhart. To start the day South won the U14 game 49-22 with best players Harrison Hicks, Jordan Bartlett, Will Attiwill, Lachlan Cameron, Mason Ropitini and Ella Guest. This week sees the old enemy East Gambier journey to BLSP and we hope to give them a tough day. After the game we h ave d i n n e r a n d awa rd s followed by the annual Shuffle Night and the treacherous Long Neck Day on Sunday starting 11am. Best of luck to all Demons.

A huge day at the kennel last week with the Bob and Joy Lawson memorial day and Jayden Eldridge playing his 200th senior game for the club. The day started well with the u14's having a good win with best on ground going to new p l ay e r a t t h e c l u b R y a n Angelino followed by Lawson medallist Brodie Versteegn then Jaiden Picken, Jarvi Mee , Jarrod Carey and Riley Lawrence.

U16's started badly and gave North a 6 goal start at quarter time and that was the margin at the final siren best players Angus Clarke, Kyan Chittleborough, Lawson m e d a l l i st S a m C o u l d re y, Nicholas Bignell, Noah Gollan and Talon Dalton. U18's were out matched on the day but the lads had a crack b e s t p l ay e r a n d L a w s o n medallist was Harlon Puhara followed by Eh Mwee Htoo, Soe Nai, Angus Clarke, Mitchell Price and Will Wllis. Reserves finally broke the drought with there first win for

East Gambier Red & Black the year best player and Lawson medallist was Hunter Mansell then Adam Todd, Connor Barry, Travis Gilbert, Dylan Howard and Ben Gaffney. Seniors was not a great game score wise but 200 gamer Jayden Eldridge put on a display and led from the front in his milestone game earning best on and Lawson medallist well done shog followed by Shaun Lock, Nick Lock, Keenan Dwyer, Luke Johnston and John Forster. Special thanks to Bob Shepherd for organising the Bob and Joy Lawson memorial day unfortunately Bob couldn't be their due to covid but it was great to see alot of old faces and Bob and Joy's family. Remember July 9th Presidents lunch with WARWICK CAPPER get in contact with the club to book your spot everyone welcome. See you out at South

FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH FROM THE ARCHIVES A WITNESS TO THEIR LIVES 1955 South East and Border League team A CHAMPION TEAM IN 1955 the former South East and Border Football League produced one of its best ever inter-league teams. It was a star-studded line-up which, even by today’s standards, the players were extremely fit, well muscled, athletic in their build and ability. Football was tough back then, and the old fashioned shirt-front was a weapon well executed by those who had the strength to impose it and this team had several who fitted the bill. But they were also talented, skilled and many either came from SANFL or VFL backgrounds or were simply the best local players of their era. To go through this team is like a who’s-who of local football during the 1950s and some went on to become league players, premiership team members and some even won the Mail Medal for being the league’s best and fairest player. In this team there were players who had won at least eight Mail Medals: Mickey Davidson (Penola 1946), Ernie Stanke (West 1952), Peter Marrett (East 1955), Wally Dittmar (Penola 1956, 1958), Johnny Miller (Penola 1959 and Keith in the early 60s), Peter Young (Kalangadoo in the early 1950s). When you look at this photograph, notice the muscle tone and build of some of the players, but in particularly Wally Dittmar at the back left. He looks like he would have worked in a manual job, yet was employed in a bank but was built with a magnificent psychic. Johnny Taylor, back row, extreme right was similar and his arm and shoulder muscles were extraordinary, remembering this was all achieved without the use of gyms and weights but simply through hard training. He came to North in 1953 after a 256 SANFL game career, playing and coaching both West Adelaide and Glenelg. Mickey Davidson, front row, fourth from left was also well built and so was Peter Young next to him. Mickey Davidson was said to be the most feared player of his era, not because of any unfair play, because he was always a ball player, but it was just his fierce attack in the ball which unsettled opponents. If an opponent was between Davidson and the ball, he never went around and the player would probably regret the bone-crunching bump which he executed so well. He was a master of winning the hard ball, yet had all the skills to do something with it after he won possession. He was an icon at Penola (and still is, as people who lived through that era still talk about him). Sadly, this would be Davidson’s second last season. A serious back injury ended his career of more than 300 league games with Penola in 1956. When Peter Young (who was the father of cricketers Peter and Michael Young) went from Kalangadoo to North Gambier and he already had a Mail Medal “tucked in his belt”. He and Mickey Davidson were the best two rovers cum ruck rovers in the league during 1955. Young would be North’s first rover in their battle against Penola for the 1955 premiership and interestingly Young

would be lining up against Mickey Davidson. Young played at Penola with Davidson in 1956. Mickey retired at the end of that season. Wally Dittmar came to Penola from Port Adelaide and would win the 1956 and 1958 Mail Medals and the goal kicking award in the SEBFL in 1957 and 58 with his high flying marking and accurate kicking. He played state football and won the SANFL goal kicking and state selection again after he went back to Port Adelaide in the early 1960s before being transferred to Millicent where also played and coached. Johnnie Smith started with East from the late 1940s as a young teenager and with his twists and turns and a great left foot kick he was a master at playing a kick behind the play as a ruck rover or centreman. He won the SEBFL B grade best and fairest Medal when he went to West to coach the Reserves for one season in 1958. He was member of East’s first premiership in 1965, after playing more than 15 seasons with only two previous grand final appearances in 1952 and 1954 which the Bulldogs lost to Penola both times. At one point he was East’s record games holder with more than 250 league appearances. (That was later eclipsed by David Clark). Ken Stafford hailed from West Gambier and was able to play either centre half forward or centre half back. He played in West’s great premiership years from 1957 to 1959 and would later play league footy with South Adelaide before returning to West in the early 1960s and coach the A grade in about 1965 after former Glenelg centreman Bill Heron finished his coaching stint there. Colin Neale was a top full back and occasional ruckman with East during the 1950s and 60s while defender and Mail Medal winner Ernie Stanke was a member of West’s premiership sides of the late 50s and Tony Hodgens (Millicent) played league football in Adelaide and was a great mate of future South coach Brian Wright. He played centre half forward in Millicent’s 1955 and 56 premierships (kicked eight goals in that grand final) and was a long serving player with the club into the early 1960s. Barney Seager (South) was a handy utility player who could play key defence or attack.

GREENWOOD Peter Marrett arrived in 1955 from Port Adelaide and coached East that year, won the Mail Medal and later would be a league goal kicking winner in 1960. He played more than 120 league games with Port and was a multi premiership winning player with the club. Pat Munn from North was full back and a member of North’s four winning premierships from 1960 to 1964. He played full forward in Penola’s premiership team in 1954. Johnny Miller was a Penola ruckman and forward in early years but later was a tear-away centre half back. He was tough, ruthless, yet skilful and brilliant, which you had to be to win two Mail Medals. Laurie Taylor, brother to Johnny, like his brother, played for West Adelaide and came to Mount Gambier to coach West. Johnny coached North but switched to West to coach their first premiership in 1957 before returning to North as a player. Laurie was said to be the brains behind West’s flag win and was recognised as a brilliant tactician. Ian Malcolm hailed from Penola had plenty of pace and could play anywhere between half forward, centreline or half back. Micky Boneham was another Penola star centreline player and after a great career with the Eagles was Tarpeena’s premiership coach in 1974. Con “Bubba” Stevens was a talented half forward or rover with Millicent while South’s Doug Naismith was said to be the “prince of full backs” locally at least, according to Penola footballer and administrator Wilf Sprengel. Millicent’s Tom Walker was said to be among the best rovers in the early 1950s era and he played on long enough to be part of Millicent’s premiership in 1955 while Ned Johns was an East Gambier wingman who possessed great pace and his passing into attack was always accurate. MATCH REPORTS MILLICENT V SOUTH GAMBIER Giving Millicent a head start is never a good idea and that is what South Gambier did at the weekend. Trailing by nine at quarter me and 16 at the half, they rallied nicely in the second half and showed they are on the improve, winning the final 30 minutes to reduce the scoreboard damage to a 12 goal margin. Missing Tabatha Sanderson, the Saints were able to subs tute one tall shooter for another with State player Annelise Janssen taking the goal shooter bib. The teenager was strong under the post in her ba le with South’s Grace Edwards while Demi Verbena stepped up her game, taking on more shoo ng responsibility and using her speed and crea ve genius to great effect. In the opening half, the defensive unit of Georgia Clark, Hannah Nitschke and Port McRae were crea ng turnover ball by forcing the South frontline into errors, with too many rebounding opportuni es also presented to the Saints circle defenders. Looking a er the ball and accurate finishing were a hallmark of the second half but the damage was done, and with Janssen and Verbena conver ng 27 from 30 in the second half, the comfortable lead was never really in danger. Lara Munro had a strong second half at shooter for South and her connec on with Imogen Walker on the a acking wing and Alyssa Duncan at goal a ack was strong, but Lisa Duldig and Paige NItschke were equally safe with ball in hands ge ng the ball to Verbena and Janssen. Clark con nues to be important for the Saints on the defensive wing as she makes delivery into the circle tough, while Verbena showed true leadership in the absence of her usual shoo ng partner. WEST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD It was a tough sister act at the weekend for the Cats to try and overcome and it proved too difficult as West defender Jade Ri er dominated the back of the court, crea ng turnovers at will and sister Sarah dominated

the shoo ng circle for the Roos, especially the second half where she converted 30 from 34. It saw the top ranked Roos record a huge win and con nue to stamp their creden als as premiership favourite. There was no weakness in their game with Lisa McGregor combining well with Sarah Ri er in the shoo ng circle and Amy Cram and Jade Ri er proving tough to pass in the defensive circle, while the hard running, young mid court of Zoe Malseed, Tara Bryant and Mikaela Horrigan looked a er the ball and used speed and strong driving to turn defence quickly into polished offence. The Cats did employ in form defender Tessa Marra to cover Sarah Ri er but the ball came down too o en and too quickly for the circle defence to stop the scoring. Genera ng scoring opportuni es was tough for the Cats despite the relentless hard running from mid court partners Scarle Jarrad and Mayakla Hutchins, who never stopped presen ng, with Jarrad also her usual tenacious best defensively. West has been a scoring machine in recent weeks, scoring 70-plus the previous against South Gambier and hi ng the 80 mark at the weekend as they look to con nue to finetune ahead of the 2022 finals series. EAST GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER East Gambier has resurrected its premiership defence in style, ge ng the be er of ling me rival North Gambier with an eight goal victory. Pu ng their preferred star ng seven out on court for the first me this season, the Bulldogs did the scoreboard damage in the second and third quarters, with the first and last being goal for goal contests. Much of the credit must go to Emily Hunter and Tyne Bosko for the work the duo did making life hard for the North feeders and restric ng the amount of ball that ended up in the hands of Caroline Wakefield and while the North shooter was s ll as accurate as ever, the opportuni es were more limited and the scoreboard reflected that. That being said, it was a stunning performance from youngster Macey Griffith,

DENTON’S

who stepped up her usual shoo ng output and her 22 from 29 showed composure and work rate beyond her years and ensured North remained in touch. It was level at quarter me, before East secured a four goal half me lead, extending it to eight by three quarter me before the even final quarter. Bo Creek and Morgan Amy took advantage of the work from Tyne Bosko and Hunter to limit the Tigers scoring opportuni es but it was at the other end, where East started to resemble a final contender for the first me in 2022 as Hunter and Tarsh McCallum worked hard to the circle’s edge to find Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko in good shoo ng posi on. Based on the amount of scoring opportuni es the East shoo ng duo were afforded, the scoreline arguably could have been slightly more comfortable with some easy misses in the opening half, but they found their radar in the second half, ne ng 26 from 32 to ensure the lead remained in their favour. Griffith was clearly the Tigers best, while defender Mel Renko was also cri cal with her ability to create turnover ball and her strong driving through the mid court to be a key player in transi on. The Tigers lost Zahra Crough early and had to reshuffle the line-up moving Lauran Norman to keeper and Ash Kalantarian into wing a ack and then early in the second half, Brianna Walters was forced from the court with Libby Morgan taking the centre bib and Alice Tentye making her A Grade debut on the defensive wing. East’s win has seen the Bulldogs sneak back into the top four with the next two weeks set to shape the top four as the three teams in conten on – East, North and South play each other.

ROUND PREVIEWS CASTERTON SANDFORD V MILLICENT The draw has not been kind to Casterton Sandford, forcing them to play the two best teas in the compe on back to back. A er taking on the top ranked Roos last weekend, the Cats now host the Saints in what will be another tough day at the office. Makayla Hutchins and Scarle Jarrad were the pick of the Cats last weekend, working hard through the mid court and they will need to be at their best to take on the in form Georgia Clark, experienced Lisa Duldig, who recently clocked up 350 senior games and Paige Nitschke, who is a crea ve and smart player. As it was last weekend, finding a way to limit supply to a tall shooter will be the key task of the Cats as they look to limit the influence of Tabatha Sanderson by pressuring the ball further up the court. Tessa Marra, who has moved from the defensive wing to goal keeper in recent ou ngs, looks set to have that task and while she is ght checking and tenacious, she will need her team mates to apply pressure on the feed. Ebany Jarrad, Caeleigh Humphries and Charlo e Rice could also be thrown a defensive role and not only do they need to shut down Sanderson, they also need to stop Demi Verbena, who is coming off a best on court performance against South. Rice, Ivy Lane and Madalene Cleary have shared the shoo ng du es and they will have to work over me to find good shoo ng posi on against the relentless defensive pressure of Hannah Nitschke and Por a McRae. The Saints will come home with the win. SOUTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER The Blue Lake Sports Park clash between South Gambier and East Gambier looms as the most crucial match of the season for both clubs as they ba le it out for a top four

finish. East’s win over North at the weekend displaced the Demons from the top four and South will need to throw everything at the reigning premiers to pick up a victory and a place back in finals conten on. The Bulldogs put their preferred star ng seven out on court for the first me this season at the weekend in their eight goal victory over North but South, first quarter aside, was impressive at the weekend and if they bring their best netball for four quarter they could rack up another victory over the tleholders. Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan are a tough shoo ng combina on and will need to be pa ent with ball in hand as Bo Creek and Morgan Amy are coming off a match where they impressed with their ability to limit the influence of Caroline Wakefield. They will also need to work the front space and not rely on the usual aerial delivery to Munro with Creek and Amy loving the ball in the air. Looking a er the ball will also fall to the likes of Imogen Walker, Megan Reid, Ruby Richter and Tully McShane and they will also need to be relentless with their defensive pressure because of Tyne Bosko, Emily Hunter and Tarsh McCallum are given free rein the scoreboard will definitely end up favouring the visitors. Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko also loom large as a smart shoo ng combina on that share the workload and Grace Edwards and Ellie Bouchier, as they did in the previous round’s win over the Bulldogs, will need to be ght checking and also dominate the air, especially on the rebounding opportuni es. This is tantamount to a final for both sides with the Bulldogs just ge ng the job done in a ght one.

NORTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER The Tigers are the walking wounded and you don’t want to be anything but full strength and figh ng fit to taker on the top ranked Roos. A cloud hands over mid court star Brianna Walters and defender Zahra Crough a er they were forced from the court with injury in last weekend’s loss to East and while North has been able to u lise junior talent to fill the void throughout 2022, when you are taking on the compe on benchmark, having your best line-up is paramount. Caroline Wakefield had a quiet game, by her lo y standards, and her ba le with Jade Ri er will be one of the pivotal on court in determining the final outcome. Macey Griffith was outstanding at goal a ack for the Tigers last weekend and she will need to reproduce that level against Amy Cram, who is one of the smartest, toughest defenders going around. Mel Renko’s ba le with Roos coach Lisa McGregor also looms large, with both being key on court leaders for their respec ve teams – Renko leading the defence line for North and McGregor being the general of West’s frontline. West has not shown any mercy to the opposi on in recent rounds and will be se ng themselves for a comfortable victory, while North rarely have two quiet games in a row and will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s loss. Slowing West’s slick ball movement will be a huge focus of the Tigers, with the likes of Lauran Norman, Libby Morgan and hopefully Walters having to play strong defensive roles through the mid court to not allow Mikaela Horrigan, Tara Bryant and Zoe Malseed to dominate in transi on. If North bring be er method to finding Wakefield in space, they will be in the hunt but the Roos should take the points.

North Gambier Yellow & Black Under 11’s North 2 vs East 14 Today we started the last round for the season, and everyone played really well. We saw some good passages of play throughout each quarter with everybody contributing as a team. We still struggled to score but we were very competitive at both ends of the court so well-done girls. Best players: Sophie Halloran (sponsored by Halloran Diesel) and Frankie Wakefield (sponsored by Lennons) Under 13A’s North 47 vs East 11 We played a decent game of netball today. We set our own goals for each quarter and achieved them. We were strong on attack and moved the ball well through the centre court. Our defence was solid, and we managed to utilise and score from the turn overs. However, we need to play with more intensity and stronger drive when we face tougher opponents later in this round. Best players: Mischa Human and Georgia Nulty Under 13B’s North 19 vs East 25 It was like dejavu for us! Just like last Saturday against Casterton, the score at the end of the 3rd quarter (but this time against East) was almost equal, and it appeared as if the girls were pleasantly surprised by their own performance. In the 4th quarter, they lost some focus. They missed crucial shots and made few unnecessary mistakes. East capitalised and got ahead. Although we lost the game, it was a very hard-fought effort. We learned that when the girls get tired, they start throwing longer and loopier passes which East easily intercepted. Indeed, a game to be proud of considering that the majority of East players also played in their 13Ateam. Best players: Carey Grivell (sponsored by 3MP) and Lacey Hunter Under 15 A’s North 74 vs East 11 The girls knew they needed to get back to their best and this week showed after a hard training session. The girls worked collectively to shut down Easts goalers and stop their natural game. Macey Griffith and Cara Nulty were brilliant in the goal circle and down the other end Ruby Mitchell and Ava Collins played their roles. We had opportunities to rotate our midcourt, we were able to see other combinations out on court which was pleasing to see. Our defence work the whole way down court is improving and so is our transition into attack. A win notched up against a strong East side, well done girls. Best players: Bella Stafford (sponsored by Stafford Construction) and Mia Dyson Under 17’s North 55 vs East 25 A slow start meant we didn’t have the lead we were aiming for at the end of the first quarter. However, the girls reset for the second and came out strong, resulting in numerous turnovers that were successfully converted. Their positive on court presence continued in the third

quarter helping them to secure a strong lead. The girls finished the game well, achieving the goals they had put in place. It was a good win, which not only helped to boost their confidence, but was also a great way to celebrate Katie Dyson’s 100th junior game. Great result girls and congratulations Katie. C Grade North 32 vs East 39 A great game by the C grade team this week. Everyone gave 100% and maintained this for the whole game. The first half was very even, largely being goal for goal in both quarters. The attacking end worked very cleanly, making good leads to feed into the goal circle. The defensive end also worked incredibly well today, putting a consistently high level of pressure on the East attack which resulted in a high number of turnovers. East crept away with a bit of the lead in the third quarter, but North didn’t let them get away with an easy fight. While we weren’t able to pull off the win this time, the team should be super proud of their efforts today! Best players: Bec Johnson and Zarly Jones (sponsored by Greg & Christine Kennedy) B Grade North 48 vs East 28 We had a new combination in goals this week with Hannah and Ash, it didn’t take long before the girls found their groove and started working well together. Amelia and George worked tirelessly around the circle to get the ball into the goalies, their hard work paid off. Katie, Bri and Nat worked hard in defence getting the turn overs we needed to gain the lead on East. Once again it was an excellent team effort. Thank you to Ava for stepping up on short notice and hitting the court when we needed her. Best players: Nat Fox (sponsored by San Piero Coffee) and Ash Ashby A Reserve North 38 vs East 40 Our girls got off to a slow start this week and we down by quite a margin at quarter time which made it challenging to get ourselves back into the game. Credit to us to only go down by 12 in the end. We were missing the hard running through centre from Amanda this week however some strong driving out of defence from Elyse and Ava allowed the ball to flow down to our attacking end with Cara and Riley continuing to work well together in the goal circle. Best players: Riley Mitchell and Ava Collins A Grade North 47 vs East 55 A very disrupted game with lots of quick positional changes due to Zahra and Bri being unable to continue with injury. Well done to all for adapting to this and not giving up all game. Unfortunately, it was our own passing choices throughout that let us down. Thank you to Alice for stepping onto the court very suddenly, playing her 1st A grade game and getting some good touches. Macey presented strongly in attack especially in the circle and proud of Lauran adjusting so quickly from attack to defense. Wishing the girls, a speedy recovery and let's regroup for a strong game next week. Best players: Macey Griffith (sponsored by Lee & Graham Pech) and Lauran Norman

Ro u n d 1 1 S aw u s h o st C a ste r to n . Congratulations goes to Lila Pearson and Swaye Lindner who reached their 50 game milestone in under 13s last weekend. We would also like to congratulate Eva, Isla, Sara, Claire and Ella who were selected in SAPSASSA, great effort girls!!

Results for the last round were: U/11 - The 11s had a great game against a strong Casterton side. Was fantastic to see some great defensive pressure applied all over the court for the whole game. Girls had some really good passages of play from one end of the court to the other and were finished off with some wonderful goals. Well done girls. West 14 – Casterton 23 Best players Jorja Disher and Ruby Lamb U/13B - Bam and here we go!! What an outstanding game everyone put in from attack to defence, mid court and all. Matching Casterton score right through the game and only coming away with a very small loss. Outstanding work from Matilda to hold her goalie to only 4 goals for the whole game, and super strong work from Hannah and Claire in defence. From last time we played it was a massive turn around in score and game spirit. A happy, enthusiastic, passionate driven team was there and settled extremely well into their set positions. They held their heads high all game and even though a narrow margin at the final break showed how much growth all the girls had shown and showed how hard they can hit against the stronger teams. Let’s go west! Additional congratulations goes to Claire Hunter, Isla Lynch, Sara Richards, Eva Povey and Ella Mckenny for competing in SAPSASA. Well done girls!! West 19 – Casterton 24 Best players Sara Richards and Claire Hunter Game day awards Claire Hunter and Hannah Jackson U/13A - Congratulations to Swaye and Lila on reaching their 50 games milestone. Both girls have had a great season so far and provide a strong combination in our attack end. Brydee, Alice, Libby and Analeigh each performed their roles well and continue to work on their individual goals as well as support each other as a team. A special mention to Sara and Islay for their efforts and slotting into the team with ease. West 55 – Casterton 3 Best players Sara Richards and Lila Pearson Game day awards Lila Pearson and Alice Allen U/15B - Saturday saw the girls take on Casterton/Sandford in a drizzly sloppy match where our girls came away with a convincing win. With over half our team out sick during the week, the girls had a week off training to rest up for our game today. We were lucky enough to have Ella and Maggy step in once again in order to help rest our girls as they fatigued. A big special shout out to Maya Lynch who worked our mid court like a champ and tirelessly opened up spaces and pushed to give an option. Our girls worked hard on backing each other up as second and third options which worked in our favour with turning the ball over often. Best players today were Annabel who was fantastic through the mid court continuously being an option and being a voice in the court and also Macy who was relentless with her defence gaining multiple turn overs. Well done Westies! West49 – Casterton 16

Blue & Red Best players Annabel Judd and Macy Pearson U/15A - The Casterton girls came out confident and took advantage of our unforced errors and saw our girls 6 goals down at the first quarter break. With the Coach doing a bit of a tweak in positions, the girls were able to come back firing and settling into their roles. Great shooting in the ring from Lucy and Ella brought the score back and with some great turnovers in defence from Ellie, Mikayla and Maggy. With some great transitions through the mid court from Alex and Hayley in the first half and Tully and Imogen in the second half, we were able to see a change to the scoreboard and end with a great win. West 38 – Casterton 29 Best players Lucy Simpson and Ellie Xanthopoulos Game day awards Ella Jolley and Tully Lindner U/17s - We started the game against Casterton/Sandford well with all players putting in great efforts all across the court. The defence girls as always had a challenge to keep the Casterton goalies under pressure. Hannah Seidel once again played a brilliant game at GD, her direction down the court is always a great help to her team. Kirra McKenny never gives up for the whole game. Maddie Milich stepped into GD after half time and as usual put the pressure on straight away. Stevi Clayton shone at WD today, her efforts to intercept the ball are always great to see. Our attack end had their work cut out for them, Amity Sheedy played a great game at WA supported by Charlotte Scott at C. Jordy Hereper and Aleisha Pearson worked the ball well with their attack supports and shot accurately. Halle stepped in to GS after half time and played well in goals, she is a great back up to our goalie squad. The game got away on us in the end. Hopefully we can peg them back in the last game of the year. I would also like to make a special mention of the ladies that umpired our game. It was consistent and fair for both teams. So thank you Emily Jolley and the Casterton umpire, I’m not sure what her name was. West 30 – Casterton 53 Best players Aleisha Pearson and Stevi Clayton Game day vouchers Stevi Clayton and Amity Sheedy C Grade - West 47 – Casterton 42 Best players Alyssa Campbell and Lisa Boyd B Grade - West 27 – Casterton 59 Best players Maddie Milich and Abby Egan A Reserve - West 42 – Casterton 43 Best players Claire Hunter and Racheal Langford A Grade - It was nice to have our full side back out on court after a few weeks of playing different combinations. Everyone had a solid game which showed on the score board. We were back to our defensive best and found beautiful space in attack. We set some goals at the start of the game which we were able to achieve. One very happy coach!! West 81 – Casterton 32 Best players Sarah Ritter and Jade Ritter This week we meet North at Vansittart Park. Good luck to all our teams. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE RED AND THE BLUE! GO WEST!!

JUNIORS: The Under 11 team played brilliantly finishing the game on top 23-14. Cleo & Brooklyn were key players in passages of play down the court.

SENIORS: Under 17 players Ebony, Zoe, Ivy & Makayla fought hard alongside teammates to bring home the first seniors win of the day 53-30, triumphing over the West girls. The C Grade Cats girls had to dig deep, seeing Kim, Zoe, Tania & Michelle play critical roles throughout the game. However despite their efforts, they weren’t able to come away with the win losing 42-47.

A terrific game was seen played by the Under 13B team, with a great bit of teamwork from the girls to win 24-19. Marlee & Rachel played outstandingly.

B Grade ran away with the win 49-27. The passages of play were fantastic & what a way to finish off the game with plays from Emma, Tammy, Kerri & Ebony.

We saw many of these players step up into the Under 13A’s but despite their strong presence on the court in the B’s, the West G a m b i e r g i r l s p re c i s i o n & accuracy down the court was unbeatable for our girls and they unfortunately lost 3-55. Rachel, Phoebe & Renae forced many errors in West’s game with their strong defensive pressure.

The girls had spectators on their seats in a nail-biting game as it flicked backwards and forwards between the leading team in the A Reserves. Chloe, Mikayla, Gaby & Lauren worked incredibly well together in attack, to leave the girls triumphing over West 4342.

The Cats girls, back at West Gambier for the second time this season, pulled on their shoes for a big day of netball as they played West for the last time this season in the round games.

A Grade once again went up against the experienced and We saw the incredible skill of our highly skilled west ladies, but unfortunately couldn’t finish on juniors in the Under 15 A’s & B’s. top losing 32-81. Makayla, B’s made great plays throughout Scarlett, Tessa & Ebany brought the entire game and fought hard strength to the team this week. to the end, but unfortunately couldn’t take home the win, Goodluck to all the teams next losing 16-49. Shoutout to Indi, weekend on home courts at Chelsea, Caitlyn & Charlotte for Island Park! refusing to give up despite the score-line. A’s had key players in Indi, Chelsea & Brydie rise to the pressure of the West girls and had a well-played & tough fought game, but couldn’t grasp the win this week, losing 29-38.

11s Millicent 15 def South 2 In slippery conditions the girls took a bit longer to find a rhythm this week. They formed a solid defence, keeping south scoreless for much of the first half! In the second half they were able to create some good movement in attack and come away with the win!

13Bs Millicent 31 def South 5 In wet conditions, the girls came out with a great attitude to play some amazing netball! Amarlie finished strong under the post and Olive and Indi were dynamic in goal attack, and both creating some excellent transitions in wing attack and wing defence. Isabel and Lainie had a strong game in defence, with some awesome intercepts and takes. Imogen and Lindy were versatile across the court and played very well! A shoutout to Ella, as even though she couldn’t play a full game, she found the strength to come back on the last quarter and shoot an amazing goal. Well done girls ! 13As Millicent 57 def South 9 Another strong display of skills and passages of play against South last week. Great team effort all round as the girls get out of their comfort zones and play in different positions. With tall players being put in the mid court and our mid-courtiers thrown in the goal circle it was great to see how they had to adjust. All the girls have a great work ethic which contributes to our score line. 15Bs Millicent 22 def by South 24 a tough game this week and although it was disappointing to go down by 2, I believe that this was a good lesson. To win these tight contests, we need to maintain control of the game and communicate, communicate, communicate. We bang on about this weekly but it really does help on the court, not only for direction but also support. It is coming down to business end of the season and we need to continue to build to secure these wins. Take on board the advice and we will progress further. Great game by Lexi at GK, took some great intercepts and is gaining in confidence each week. Well done. 15As Millicent 45 def South 9 The girls started slowly in the first half and South played well to stop our normal smooth transition. After half time we moved the ball better and finished off in goals to come away with a good win. Mia and Matti were our award winners. 17s Millicent 67 def South 65 Great start by the girls, all adapting themselves well to all the changes made. Was a tough game with very strong opponents. Great attacking

Millicent Red, Black & White game, scoring off all the turnovers and intercepts we got. Was a close finish with plenty more to work on heading into the later half of the season. C Grade Millicent 45 def South 38 After a rough loss last weekend against East It great to come back and have a good win against South. A stand out game from all players. We started off slow in the first half but came together as a team and worked hard in the second half. Second efforts from all players is what got us across the line. Kate Pattern had an amazing game in GK working very had along with Alannah Pratt who ran hard in centre and who is constantly working hard and backing herself up, well done all. B Grade Millicent 50 def South 25 Definitely not our prettiest game this season but a solid win none the less. Our unforced errors caused by basic mistakes will need to reduce in order to maintain our presence on top. We made the habit of not coming at the ball in front and expected passes over to succeed with a taller opposition. When we come up against quality sides, we really need to increase our work rate and gain possession by being in front. We d i d h ave s o m e s o l i d p l ays throughout the game but really need to focus on our consistency as a whole team. Keep striving girls! A Res Millicent 41 def South 34 After a last minute change it was great to see Kayleigh step up to fill the shooters role. It was great to see all her teammates be very supportive and offer encouragement from the first whistle. Once again the overall team contribution was awesome with some really solid connections from all areas of the court to pressure for turnovers. Well done Kate for a strong game. You really did grow in confidence from start to finish. Thanks again to Ella for supporting us at late notice. A Grade Millicent 57 def South 45 With Tab away and Paige rested we were able to give more opportunities to our young Saints in Annelise Janssen, Lillie Paul and Daisy Tunkin. All three girls fitted in with ease and played their role in our win. Demi and Lisa led the team in attack with their experience and smarts. Our defensive trio of Georgia, Hannah & Portia combined well creating turnovers and working well as a unit. Well done girls! With only a few games to go, let’s all get around each other as a club and continue to come out and support our netball teams as we make our way into finals!

Red & White

Always a tough day at the office in The C Grade paid the price for one Millicent but some of our teams bad quarter, while the B Grade was missing key players. did a great job. The 15 & Under B were the only winners on the day, fighting hard in a tight contest as Michaela continues to develop this team and see some real scoreboard rewards. The A Grade put in a huge effort after a sluggish start and only went down y 12 goals which is the closest margin with the competition benchmark by our top side for the best part of a decade and then some. This young side, working with Tanya Hood, Brandi Bouchier and Felicity Walker in recent weeks continue to develop and their best is definitely good enough and now they are working overtime on consistency and that will be critical this weekend in a must-win against East Gambier.

The 17 & Under have challenged the undefeated Saints twice now and again fought back hard in the last quarter to almost pinch it – the leadership from Alyssa, the sharp shooting of Lara, the versatility and athleticism of Ellie, the tenacity of Jade, the smarts of Milla, the tight checking of Alannah, the work rate of Chelsea Ryan, the determination and aerial skills of Sophie and the willingness of Chelsea Dunn to compete with her tall State team opponent has shown the girls are right in the hunt this season. We had a contingent of netballers at SAPSASA this week with Scarlet, Tegan, the two Zaras and Elsie flying the flag for South, along with supercoach Tracy McShane. It is great to see our young talent extending itself…

The A Reserve also continues to be super competitive with Jaymee O’Neil and Mykaela Thiele leading the way at either end of the court.

A GRADE - East 55 defeated North 47 This is exactly what we needed today. It’s so nice to have everyone back. We played a terrif ic team game, with go o d composure and patience. We are continuing to build some beautiful passage of play in attack and our feeding into our goalies was great today with really good communication. Awesome pressure all over the court we were able to turn over the ball numerous times and capitalise them with goals. Let’s keep this momentum going. Best Players – Michelle Richardson & Amy Feast Awards – Sophie Mclean (C reek Livestock) Michelle Richardson (Natural Born Grillers) C GRADE – East 39 defeated North 39 With what was a slow start to our game North took an advantage staying at the pace. Our defenders placed immense pressure to allow our attack end some crucial time to regain possession. Half time changes made for a slightly different pace, Lucy went for her first slip and slide of the day (her second being in the late hours of Saturday night) during the third. With the girl coming back to our game in the final we pulled away by 7 goals. We wish Lucy all the best in her recovery! 17’s – East 25 lost to North 56 A Good first quarter which saw us go goal for goal with North. We had great defensive work with Matilda and Tonique working hard in the defensive circle. Patient feeding gave our goalies good opportunity to score and they finished off well. A drop of intensity in the 3rd quarter saw up fall behind and our bad passing crept back into our game. We regrouped some in the last quarter and lifted our work rate back, which was good to see. Keep working hard at trainings and putting this into our games on Saturday. East Gambier Red & Black 15A’s – East 11 lost to North 74 Once again, with people being sick, injured or away, we had to make some changes to our normal line up, but yet again, all players showed their strength and determination in whatever position they were put into. Thank you to all girls for having a run in what was a very challenging game. I am so proud of you all. A quick thank you to all parents for their help and support throughout this season, you have no idea how amazing it is to have so many there watching their kids! The girls got off to a flying start in the first quarter providing defence down the court and creating turnovers. Heading into the remaining 3 quarters we lost a bit of confidence and unfortunately for us north got a run on. We’ll put this week’s game behind us and come out firing next week. We believe in the girls abilities to achieve a win week in week out and I hope they can see how proud we are of all they have achieved so far.
