GAME PREVIEW With the long-awaited opening round of the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League already in the books, a en on turns to who can back up that effort this weekend. Due to the fact half of the teams played their first compe ve match for 18 months, player fitness might be a telling factor, while wet weather could also throw a spanner in the works again as clubs get back in the groove of footy season. North Gambier v East Gambier Tensions always li when North and East Gambier go head-to-head and the opening clash of 2021 should be no different. Both sides tasted success in round 1 and rate themselves as a premiership contender, so there would be nothing sweeter than claiming the early bragging rights over their archrival. The Tigers enjoy the home ground advantage at Vansi art Park and are buoyant from burs ng onto the scene with a huge 70-point win over Casterton Sandford. North sprinted out of the blocks with coach Jus n McConnell leading from the front with a big bag of six goals. However, McConnell was not even the Tigers' number-one target as Sam Stafford produced a stellar performance inside 50 with seven majors himself. North made its a acking style clear and is preparing for an entertaining showdown with the Bulldogs, who also like to explode from stoppages. East carries winning form too, but was pushed to the edge by West Gambier in tough condi ons at McDonald Park. Despite not kicking truly in the en re first half, a third-quarter blitz handed the Bulldogs the ini a ve, while defenders Nick Lock, Brad Rathjen and Jessie Foster saved the day. But East's backline will be under fire trying to control the boots of Stafford and McConnell. North enjoys the high ground with history against the Bulldogs, who have lost their last three clashes against the Tiger army.

THOMAS MILES - SE VOICE

South Gambier v West Gambier South Gambier showcased the progress it has made since falling short of finals in 2019 with an impressive performance at McLaughlin Park last weekend and it would love nothing more than knocking over grand-finalist West Gambier on home turf. The Demons have recruited well and kicked off 2021 in fine form by brushing aside Millicent with li le concerns. Meanwhile, the Roos limp into this contest without coach Steven Wenman, who will be restricted to the bench sadly a er injuring his shoulder and ankle just minutes a er the first bounce. Although Wenman's presence will be missed from the half forward line for possibly the remainder of the year, his team s ll possesses plenty of danger. Garret Ha, Todd Lewis, Aden Pfitzner and Josh Schapel all scored confidence-boos ng goals in tough condi ons against East Gambier. Lawry Bradley-Brown was a class above in the corresponding fixture of 2019 when West smashed South by 96 points. But the Demons are a different beast this year and coach Brayden Kain is looking forward to seeing what his side can deliver on the wide spaces of the familiar Blue Lake Sports Park. South can link up from one end of the ground to the other with devasta ng effect and this was a feature of the big win over the Saints. Kain and Kym Eagleson reaped the rewards with a combined total of nine majors, but one cannot underes mate the threat of Brodie Foster despite the star forward being kept goalless last week. The wounded Roos hope their midfield can make the difference, while the confident Demons aim to prove they are the real deal. Casterton Sandford v Millicent The peaceful Victorian town of Casterton will rise back to life with the familiar sounds of country football this weekend.

F.L. Island Park has not hosted a game of senior men's football since August 2019 and the area will come out in force to support their beloved team a er ba ling border restric ons. But the Cats cannot afford to be distracted during a must-win game against Millicent. Neither team le the field last Saturday sa sfied having been dealt considerable defeats and a victory would do wonders to their respec ve confidence levels for the rest of the season. An interes ng subplot to the game will be how Tom Renzi is welcomed to the Ca ery in a Saints' jumper. Renzi was supposed to coach Casterton Sandford in the ill-fated 2020 WBFL season, but never stepped on the field and jumped back over the border during the summer. He will be keen to follow in the footsteps of young defender Sam Gray, who stood out in his first Millicent match shu ng down South's key-forward Brodie Foster. If the Saints can make regular inside-50 entries, Sam Willis and Gene Robinson have already shown they can make an impact from any angle. Meanwhile, the Cats must get their claws out from the opening bounce a er being run ragged by North Gambier and recording just three scoring shots from as many quarters. Expect neither side to hold back with the scary prospect of star ng the season 0-2 just one slip away.

South Gambier DEMON SAYINGS It was great to be back playing football and netball and it was a pleasure to par cipate at the remodelled Mclaughlin Park. The Millicent community have done a fantas c job with the facility over the past few years and it’s a lot of fun spending a Saturday a ernoon watching footy and ea ng giant sausages in the grandstand. Despite windy and difficult condi ons it was a good start to the season with all football grades winning. The margins in both U14 and U16 grades belied the closeness of the games. For the U14 White team Jacob Salmon, Will A will and Archie Milich were outstanding and for the U16 White team Joel Bryant, Will Vaughan and Mitch Harrold were best players. The U18 team had to fight hard to get the win which is exactly what football is about and how we improve. Oli Thompson showed his undoubted class with 5 goals, Thomas Yates home from school in Adelaide is always welcome, Mitch Sims combines hard work with special skills, Josh McGregor dominated the midfield and Ellio Fisher won his posi on handsomely. A er some difficult seasons, in 2020 the reserves gave hope of be er mes with a Limestone Coast FL grand final appearance. A er an even first term South gradually got on top and kicked away in the second half. Having experienced players such as Dion Stra ord, Luke Foran and Brent Howard prepared to mentor lots of keen young blokes makes a huge difference. Chris Fallas was best winning the Li le Rippa 6-pack, followed by Ellio Ben, the older brigade and Ethan Chuck. If this team con nues to apply itself and improve there are big things ahead. A er a big summer of work around the club, recrui ng and preseason the senior team hit the park with reasonable expecta ons. Lots of new players means it will take a few games for the team to gel but a 4 goal first quarter followed by a 5 goal second term put the game to bed. Taylor Saffin showed the benefits of a summer fitness and gym program, it was fantas c to have Sco Enderl back at the club in the midfield, Jack Casey is an awesome player who works hard at his cra , Kym Eagleson kicked 5 snags, great to have Jake Tentye back playing a er 2 years injured and Bre O’Neil was himself. Plenty of other good players on the day. This team needs to keep challenging itself and set high standards as the opportunity is in front of them Good luck to all players and teams for the rest of the season.

West Gambier Blue & Red Well what a windy wet day to kick the footy season off but it was good to be out playing again. The day stated early with 14s kicking of against East in a very good game of football. The game went right down to the wire with East holding on for the win. Our boys did very well and rallied together and had showed some exci ng signs of style of play. They tackled strongly and rebounded very well off the half back line. This week we want to keep improving and take steps to hopefully get our first win for the year. Best Players on the day go to Croker, Stutley, Szopory, Noble and Johnston. In the 16s our boys played a great brand off fast flowing football. They moved the ball very well and showed they are training hard and taking the game to another level. Wiese ended with 4 goals and gave off a couple, Byfieldt snagged 3 while Loring kicked 2. We need to men on a backman kicking a goal with Day snagging a goal also which the boys enjoyed. It was a good collec ve team game with everyone contribu ng to the win. Best players was Weise, Case, Winterfield, Byfieldt, Davey. The 18s where a li le undermanned this week with some away and 2 playing in the A grade. They played extremely well and got out to a very impressive lead at hal ime but slowed a li le a er hal ime. The li le pocket rocket “libba” Morale back to the club this year kicked 4 goals and the man mountain Cornolo chipping in with 2. It was a great win some very impressive signs but need to keep improving to beat south. Be er players were Ramsey, Bana Say, Carson, Morale and Giddings. Ressies kicked of in a game im sure both clubs would not call exci ng. The condi ons played havoc with skills as well as fitness to a lot of players. Fist game is always hard but with limited prepara on its always harder. East in the end where to good and got over the line with a 4 goal final quarter. Wilson kicked a couple with first me coach Lewis kicking the other. Be er players where Hein, Fox, Wilson and Jarnevic. Last week we had 2 new debutants playing in the A grade game, Reece Cowling and Ethan Gladman. Both did an outstanding job and was rewarded for the hard work they have put in throughout preseason. Reece was named 6 the best players in a great effort and never stopped with hard tackling and defensive pressure and Ethan was just class and kept pu ng himself in a good spot and ge ng the ball and could have easily been in the best also. The A grade was not a great display of Western Border Football with both sides having some players missing. Our boys started great in the first 5 minutes into the wind but unfortunately losing Wenmo hurt a lot. We wish the Big man all the best in the recovery and as he was saying as being wheeled out “he will be back”. In a scrappy first half we had a lot of missed opportuni es with our score being 1.7. 13. East had a great 3rd Quarter which was too much for our boys to get back in the end. More injuries came out of the game to finish with 17 fit in the end was a great effort from the boys. J Williams was named best, with Skipper Bradley Brown second. Other be er players were Holmes who missed the last quarter, Lewis, Giddings and Cowling. With more luck and no more injuries this week we look forward to taking on South at BLSP. Fridge

North Gambier TIGER TALES Wasn’t it great to have football and netball back, especially on Vansi art Park. Even the weather gods turned on some winter weather. We had a successful day on the oval, but full credit to Casterton Sandford in their first compe ve games since 2019. Their club is so important to their local community, and our league, so lets help them out where possible. Best players can be seen on-line, which is the way of the future, whether us oldies like it or not! We had many debutants throughout the day, with 6 in our A grade side, Luke Powell and 5 under agers, which is where our previous success has been built, and the future of the league. They all had excellent preseasons and it was good to be able reward Ethan Norman, Henry Gould, Joel Griffith, Jay Turner and Adam Prosperi-Porta with selec on in round 1. You are a credit to yourselves and our junior program, and shows our juniors our pathway to senior football. Thanks to Ash and Jess for arranging the player auc on, and of course the auc oneer, Whanny, who loves the microphone. None of us know what we actually bought, but I am sure the girls will sort through that. Today we welcome East, and our past players for a half me show. Should be a ripping day, before we head over to the club for tea and presenta ons. Thanks to all our volunteers, and for those that haven’t got a job yet, it is coming. Sponsors are con nuing to sign on, joining our major sponsors in Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC. Go Tigers.

East Gambier BULLDOG BARKS

ü Washed the jumpers ü Pumped up the footy’s ü Round 1 done and dusted ü Mowed the lawns

Welcome back readers as round 1 at McDonald park went off with a bang. With junior footy on the back oval and main oval it made interes ng mes at the gate. The under 14's started the day off in style notching up a win and I must say scooters award speech was one of his best. Best players were Golan, Smith and McKinnon. The under 16's played next coached by Ma y the man bun Ellis. Best players were Puhara, Ellis & Chi leborough. Under 18's. Mmmmm let me think. I won’t say anything about this fella. Things could end bad for me. East Gambier welcome back life member Jason Dunn. Great to see some new faces and old ones out there. Keep training hard the rewards will come. Best players were Bignell, Graney and Nai. Reserves led by the Travis who just turned 30 during the week, surprisingly I thought he was turning 40, you just never know these days. Travis’s boys had a good come from behind win. Best players were Demps, Clarky & Gaff. A grade had a win. Interes ng day. You wouldn’t want to have a bet on first goal scores as both teams struggled to kick the ball between the big s cks. Half me went and our lads kicked some much needed goals to snatch victory from the West boys. Best players were Rumbles, Noddy, Rat and Skip. Big shout out to Wemmmmo who unfortunately injured himself in the first quarter was a real sour note on the day. This week we’re off to our much loved North club. For East people going to North is good on grand finals and going to get free alcohol at someone’s 21st at the cycle club. Can’t wait! East club opens at 5. No dinners but awards and drinks. Go Dogs.

Casterton-Sandford CAT TALES Great to be back at Island Park, ea ng a steak and onion sanga or a pie, drinking a hot coffee or a coldie, mixing with mates and enjoying the footy and netball, this is living Cat Fans! Today we welcome the Millicent Saints and although we don't adver se a Super Snag our snags are certainly super, as are all our other food and drink choices. Make the Saints feel at home as it's been a long me between games for them too. Prez Ayton has taken the reins from Nathan Fidler who did a cracking job over the last 2 years against much adversity and now Snake can sit back and enjoy the show and barrack on his legend of a wife Sharna over at the Netball, cheers to you both. To Dylan and his first lady Bridie congratula ons on what has been a big year so far, keep kicking goals you 2 superstars. Kane Forbes has taken on the Senior Coaches role and has assembled a top-notch team of support around him, he's a premiership coach in the Ressies and taken the next step up. Great role model and top bloke who has also taken on the role of Veep of CSFNC, good onya Kaneo. Kristy McDonald has taken on the big role of Secretary; Kristy is the eldest daughter of club legend Noel and brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge. As Editor of the Casterton News she has led it to being one of the premier country newspapers. We welcome these new addi ons to the club commi ee as well as several others and thank those that have retained their roles, your service is valued. Last week the footy began but we were unable to get the points in any of the grades, the seniors had a good go at the Tigers a er a slow start but couldn't make up the difference. Our Ressies showed youthful enthusiasm and bar for a 10-minute period probably could have pulled off a win.

V

Millicent SAINTLY SAYINGS Gee whiz, A year off gets everyone up and about for some sport and social me. Big crowds were the order of the day all round the leagues is my mail, and wasn't it fantas c to see. Be er if the weather had held, but it didn't dampen enthusiasm!! To everyone in each club who smashes themselves to get things to happen smoothly a er a year off, Thanks! I reckon we were all a bit rusty but the teamwork was on show and got it done…. Onto the ground… The results may not have been where we want them a er round one, however the future was well on display in all grades. Our younger footballers have worked with the senior group all off-season and are coming on hard, and will push for spots and improve rapidly. Half the senior side taking on South were under 21 and some young guns are among them. Cream Willis added one to the highlight reel and debutant Sammy Gray was very high in the best. Some long hours of PR in the club Sat night, with Tanks head shave raising a heap and exposing some fairly rough lids!! We backed up Sunday for LCWFL semi finals, a great day was had and we finished a solid development year for our women players. We then hosted League presenta ons and a graduate of our junior program, Ella Li le was crowned Best and Fairest. Looking forward to ge ng over the border this week and having a crack against the Cats! Go Saints!

The Under 16s plugged away all day and never gave in, Sam Craig was our goal kicker and Rufaro Makore was named the best along with Cory Wombwell, Hunter Plush, Mitchell Bright, Nicholas Lambert and Adam Kaliebe. The Other Junior games were also played in the right spirit. With a bit of help from the Cat Fans today we should be able to reverse our fortunes, so get behind them with a hearty CARN CATS! Good luck to our LCWFL Cats in the Finals, great win last week against Mundulla se ng us up for a crack at the Premiership! Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Boonaroo, Casterton Secondary College, Taylor Motors, Landmark, Sports and All and Foodworks. FOOTY JENS HOTEL

WITH This week the Western rewinds a few years and places the spotlight on former South Gambier ball winner Simon Berkefeld. Berkefeld is a two- me premiership star for the Demons and is currently enjoying his second season in the stands a er hanging up the boots at the end of 2019.

BERKEFELD

Looking back at the 2010 season, Berkefeld admi ed he struggled to get over the high of a flag and was a bit “lazy”. But it was the “wakeup call” he needed and took his game to new heights over the next few seasons.

Although the midfielder forged a successful career in both the Western Border and Kowree Naracoorte Football Leagues over the best part of the decade, he was surprisingly a late comer to the game. Berkefled said he did not take an interest in Australia's favourite game un l he was 13.

Berkefeld received the honour of represen ng SA Country in 2012 and thrived in state colours. The South Gambier product was eventually named in the SA Country team of the decade last year and said it was the highest level of football he played.

“I started a bit later than most,” he said. “One of my mates was playing at South and told me I should have a kick, so I did. “I grew to like the game and have fond memories of coaches like Brad Patzel, who made the game quite enjoyable.”

“That was just a really cool experience,” Berkefeld said. “To play with the best of the country leagues in SA was amazing and I learnt a lot off them as well. “I played with Dane Rampe the year before he got dra ed and there were heaps of great team mates like ruckman Michael Liebelt and Sam Pfeiffer, who could dominate the game from full back.”

Berkefeld took steady steps of progress through the junior ranks including a “lucky” Under 16's interleague call up. However, he said his biggest gain materialised from a long s nt away from the playing arena.

Berkefeld con nued to play a major role for the Demons and tasted the ul mate success again in 2015 by denying North Gambier a four peat. Despite scaling the peak again, he admi ed another change was needed to extend his career.

“I actually took a year off footy and just wanted to take a break,” Berkefeld said. “I became a boundary umpire and did local A Grade games and it was good to see the other side of the game. “The break was a turning point for me because I missed it and came back fi er and hungrier.”

“While I s ll enjoyed playing at South, I was ge ng a li le bit stale with football and needed a new challenge,” Berkefeld said. “I was thinking about a year off again, but a few guys at Penola asked me to come up and the reason why I went was the prospect of playing a new league, teams and players. “It felt like I had to prove myself all over again and that was refreshing.”

When Berkefeld resumed his playing days, his career took off and within a couple of months he found himself rubbing shoulders with the Demons' successful A Grade team. S ll being a top age Under 18's player without any previous seniors' exposure, he said the shy youngster found the top level a surreal experience. “It was super exci ng being asked to play (A Grade) and the debut game was at Casterton,” Berkefeld said. “From memory I s ll played 18's in the morning and sat on the bench for most of the A Grade, but remember everyone ge ng around me. “I was surprised because I didn't have that much confidence, but we had some very good senior leaders like Heath Sims and Adam Salmon at the me who helped me out in that regard. “They kept encouraging me to run and take people on, so I started believing a bit more.” Berkefeld bounced in and out of A Grade for a while, but became a permanent fixture a er gradua ng from junior football. He found himself on the wing and enjoyed the ride to his first senior flag in 2009. Berkefeld said he struggles to recollect much of that special day in September, where he was named in the best a er overcoming East Gambier by 17 points. “In 2009 we had a really good team and the grand final happened so quickly,” he said. “I remember a er the game there was just so much excitement. “A lot of the boys had already tasted it, but it was my first premiership, so it was just a fun me.”

Berkefeld remained key part of the Eagles' engine room un l his re rement at the end of 2019. He struggled to compare the WBFL and KNTFL and said they are both played at a high standard. Berkefeld also enjoyed standing side by side with younger brother Ma for South and Penola, while the siblings also spent lots of me on the basketball court. Simon said the round ball was his first love and tried to play for the Pioneers, but his me shoo ng hoops greatly assisted his skills with the Sherrin. “Both sports helped each other out,” he said. “Basketball helped in terms of decision making on the field because you had to make quick, ins nc ve decisions on the court and be good in traffic. “Defence is a lot more team orientated in basketball, so you tend to read the play be er.” Berkefeld also fana cally followed basketball and picked out watching Lebron James' breakthrough NBA championship with Cleveland as his favourite spor ng moment. If he could enjoy any band live it would be The Offspring, while the St Kilda fan would travel back in me to the Saints' only VFL/AFL premiership in 1966.

MATCH REPORTS EAST GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER East Gambier has backed up the pre-season hype surrounding its new look A Grade line-up with a resounding 27 goal victory over West Gambier. The mid court pressure from the Bulldogs created a mountain of turnover ball, especially in the first half, and their transi on in scoring those turnovers was quick and accurate. Tyne Bosko, Emily Hunter and Lisa Fyfe proved impassable at mes as East powered to a 12 goal quarter me lead, leaving the Roos shellshocked. Add to that the accurate finishing from Tenille Gray and Amryn Bosko and East made every post a winner on the opening half. Looking to shake things up in the second half, West swung the changes with Carlee Ransom moving into centre and Mikaela Horrigan to the a acking wing and Amy Cram moving out to less familiar territory at wing defence, Jade Ri er out to goal defence and Nikiesha Facey back to goal keeper. Ransom certainly provided more drive and leadership for the Roos and an overall improved effort saw West start to enjoy more ball and take advantage of the strong work of Sarah Ri er at goal shooter. East certainly showed why they are the early favourite to challenge Millicent for the 2021 tle, with 2017 Western Border Netball Associa on A Grade joint best and fairest Lisa Fyfe proving she will be a huge asset for the Bulldogs, while reigning league best and fairest Gray con nues to be a headache for opposi on defenders. West have plenty of room for improvement and will welcome back Tara Bryant, who is ed up with basketball commitments for the next couple of rounds, which will add strong driving and speed to the line-up, while Ransom was reliable and Ri er showed why she is part of the South Australian 17 & Under development squad.

MILLICENT v SOUTH GAMBIER Millicent took to the court for life without Donna Denton and Hayley Dunn and then were dealt the blow of Lisa Duldig being forced from the court with a calf injury with barely a half of netball under her belt. The Saints s ll have plenty of quality at their disposal though with Kimmi Tincknell (Varcoe) returning to the line-up, teaming up with young gun Hannah Nitschke as the new look defensive combina on. The duo were two of the Saints' best as they con nually turned the ball over the give their team plenty of scoring opportuni es. Lucy Denton controlled the mid court and with Paige Nitschke and Demi Verbena sharing wing a ack and goal a ack du es there was s ll pace to burn and speed of ball out the front of Tabatha Sanderson who was able to dominate under the post. Paige Lucas showed she can certainly fill a mid court role with her debut at wing defence to replace the injured Duldig, ge ng some cri cal touches. South, with only one player in the A Grade team from 2019 s ll in the Demons line-up, tried a few combina ons, u lising returning university student Georgia Duncan in defensive roles and former club best and fairest Imogen Walker, who was clearly South's best, domina ng the shoo ng circle. West recruit Hannah Witherow ran hard all day and did some damage when moved to the defensive wing in the second half, while Lara Munro made her A Grade debut, taking the goal a ack bib for the second half and showed she will certainly find her niche in the top senior grade. The height of Grace Edwards also looms large, given her ability to play at either end of the court, while Renee Pluckhahn was tenacious playing her best netball in round one in the opening half at goal defence. In the end, though, Sanderson's height proved difficult to combat and Verbena, Denton and Paige Nitschke were just too slick with ball in hand ensuring the Saints started their premiership defence with a 57-30 victory.

DENTON’S

NORTH GAMBIER v CASTERTON SANDFORD Missing Caroline Davey, Brianna Walters and Alycia Close for the opening round, North Gambier was s ll able to put together a formidable A Grade line-up as it hosted the undermanned and inexperienced Cats, who were also missing key personnel, none more so than tough but Scarle Jarrad. It was a strong opening quarter from both teams with the 12-7 scoreline reflec ng the toughness of the first 15 minutes, with accurate finishing from Paige Murrell (Cameron) keeping the Cats in touch – she ne ed six from seven. Things started to open up in the second quarter as Noni McConnell started to find space, fe e d i n g a c c u ra t e l y i n t o t h e s h o o n g combina on of Alisha Bryan and Ellen Brown, with Bryan clearly the focal point, conver ng 11 from 13 as the Tigers took control. At the other end, Maddie Whaites and Jessie Li le were shu ng down opportuni es for the Cats, with Whaites clearly enjoying the move out to goal defence a er a few seasons back under the post. The injec on of Lauren Buddle into the mid court certainly looks set to be a bonus for North – her speed and willingness to hunt the intercep on was invaluable as North went into the main break with a 13 goal advantage. N o r t h d o m i n a te d t h e s e c o n d h a l f a s opportuni es to score became few and far between for the Cats despite the strong efforts from Sharna Fidler, who was ba ling hard in defence and the hard running of Isobel Cleary who was having an impact at both ends of the court. In the end, it was a comfortable win for the Tigers, who look like they are ready to return to contender status in 2021.

ROUND 2 PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER South Gambier had its moments against the reigning premiers in round one but will need to be switched on from the first whistle against a wounded West Gambier.

CASTERTON SANDFORD v MILLICENT A tough ask for the Cats when they host the reigning premiers Millicent but also a great learning opportunity for the rising talent that is part of the Casterton Sandford line-up.

The Roos knew it would take a li le bit of me for their new look line-up to gel but the sluggish start against East was jarring and West will be looking to show they will be a compe ve team to face against all opposi on.

The Saints will take to the court without their three most experience premiership stars – the re red Donna Denton, Hayley Dunn and Lisa Duldig, who injured her calf in round one – but the bad news for the Cats is they will s ll face quality opposi on.

There will s ll be no Tara Bryant in the mid court this weekend which takes some drive and speed out of the West mid court but Carlee Ransom showed she hasn't missed a beat since last being on court and her strong connec on with goalers Lisa McGregor and Sarah Ri er will be cri cal in this clash. Defensively the Roos have Amy Cram marshalling the troops alongside young guns Jade Ri er, whose height will be cri cal in this clash if South recruit Grace Edwards takes the goal shooter bib, and Nikiesha Facey, who is ght marking and athle c. South, much like Casterton Sandford, has been decimated by player losses for 2021, and will no doubt hope to be u lising some returning university students to inject some experience into the line-up. Lara Munro will be pushing for a star ng berth a er a strong debut against the reigning premiers when injected into the contest at half me, while another new face, Renee Pluckhahn, showed her versa lity with a strong performance in goal defence and some hard running in centre. Edwards showed she will give South the height it has lacked in recent seasons, providing a focal point under the post in the shoo ng circle and crea ng some turnover ball at goal keeper. Alyssa Duncan, the only remaining 2019 team member, also gives the line-up versa lity, taking the a acking wing or a shoo ng role and Hannah Witherow, coming up against her former club, will bring her speed to the court. West Gambier, even without Bryant, is a more se led line-up and their strong pre-season in prac ce matches was promising, giving them the edge in this contest and they should rebound from their round one loss with a win over the rebuilding Demons.

Paige Nitschke and Demi Verbena bring speed of ball and crea vity to the Saints frontline and their connec on was strong in round one, while State representa ve Lucy Denton is also influen al at both ends of the court. Defensively the Saints are also in good shape with the return of Kimmi Tincknell (Varcoe) and the development of the tenacious Hannah Nitschke. The other challenge for the Cats will be the height of Tabatha Sanderson, who scored 38 of the Saints 57 goals at the weekend, with her strength at the post. Casterton Sandford, facing the challenge of the loss of the vast majority of their 2019 A Grade line-up, are looking to develop the next genera on of Cats, while placing some classy experienced players around them. Coach Tori Broomby is the general of the a ack line and her combina on with the speed and smarts of Paige Murrell provides the Cats with some experience at the shoo ng end of the court, while Isobel Cleary was a clear stand out in the mid court and her work rate at both ends of the court will be cri cal in the ba le with Denton. Sharna Fidler ba led hard against the strong holding Alisha Bryan at the weekend and if she gets the call up again will make Sanderson earn her possessions, while the height of Meg Fennell, who missed the opening round, would be of value in this contest. Verbena and Paige Nitschke bring speed to the goal a ack posi on, so young defender Caeleigh Humphries is a good match up with her agility and pace and it will be another great learning experience for the talented goal defence. Scarlet Jarrad would be a welcome inclusion with her leadership, toughness and versa lity and while there is li le doubt the Saints take the points comfortably, the Cats will no doubt have

their own goals to work towards. NORTH GAMBIER v EAST GAMBIER Two of the three convincing winners on the weekend will relish the first real test of the season as the Tigers host the Bulldogs in the match of the round. East was impressive in its clinical victory over West Gambier and the Tigers were also on fire against the Cats as they look to finalise their preferred line-up. There are no weaknesses in the East line-up but the same can be said of North so the clash is tantalising and they are two teams who have a recent history of some tough and tense preliminary finals. The return of Caroline Davey to the shoo ng circle is huge for the Tigers – she is smart, accurate and incredibly difficult to defend – while Brianna Walters is another returning Tiger that will add class to the mid court with her pace and smarts and reliability with ball in hand. Maddie Whaites further cemented her reputa on as one of the best defenders in the compe on with a best on court performance in round one, while Mel Renko is always damaging whether in circle defence or the mid court. Another new face, Lauren Buddle, is another great pick up for the North mid court. Of course East has influen al recruits of its own, with Lisa Fyfe taking the goal defence bib, Bo Creek almost classed as a new recruit given she has been away from the court for a couple of seasons and coach Emily Hunter adding hard running and defensive intensity to the mid court. Fyfe and Creek could well stake claim to the best defensive combina on in the league, and with Hunter and Tyne Bosko pu ng the pressure on in transi on, East does not give up easy possession. The a ack line is also rock solid. Tenille Gray is the best player in the compe on of the past two seasons, and Amryn Bosko might be young but she is smart and, more importantly, composed, while the pace and crea vity of Tarsh McCallum is even more dangerous on the a acking wing than it was in the centre. With North s ll se ling on the roles of a number of players, East is the more se led line-up and should remain undefeated.

It was a tough day at Millicent but when you play the compe on benchmark in most grades in the past decade it was never going to be easy. Plenty of work to do but the coaches also know it was only round one and with plenty of new faces at the club in 2021, player development and team chemistry will take me.

West Gambier Blue & Red

Round One saw West Gambier head to the East Gambier Den and all teams, (especially our Senior grades with the 2020 season on the sidelines due to COVID) were keen and excited to hit the courts for the 2021 season. In true fashion Mother Nature seem to know that the netball and football season was underway providing us with a true Autumn/Winters Day. West secured wins in our Under 11, 13A, 13B, 17/Under & C Grade Teams.

There were plenty of highlights: Five debutantes in the 11 & Under with Ruby, Lily, Ellie and Myla all showing great signs, while Courtney knocked it out of the park...it was also great to see some of the girls in their second season really showing improvement with Lucy Dening having a great game in defence... At the other end of the spectrum, there were plenty of debutantes in the A Grade as well... Lara came onto the court in the second half at goal a ack and showed she absolutely belongs at this level in her first A Grade game (the first of what we hope is many for the Demons)... There was also the new faces in the A Grade with Grace having an impact at both ends of the court, giving South some rare height under the post, while Renee also showed great tenacity, versa lity and athle cism in her first ou ng for the Demons...Hannah Witherow was another new face in the red and white and her second half at wing defence saw her get some great touches and her pace will be a huge asset... In an interes ng fact, especially for those new to the club, the A Grade team in round one also boasted two A Grade premiership players from the club's one and only A Grade flag - 1995. Playing coach and the brains behind the junior development program Belinda Scanlon and evergreen defender and long me coach at South Brandi Bouchier both hit the court against the Saints - providing cri cal leadership for our inexperienced A Grade team...And then there was Imi Walker playing out of her skin and reminding us why we miss her so much as a permanent part of our A Grade team...there was also another sneaky debut from Georgia Duncan - the second Duncan sister we have lured from the mighty Magpies into a red and white dress. Plenty of new faces in the A Reserve as well, with Kaitlyn Horrigan, Mel Kuhl & Ashlee Kuhl making thier South debuts - it was a tough day but the form of defenders Mykaela and Ellie gave a glimpse of the future. It was great to see Anna Kate and Larnka in control on the B and C court in thier coaching debuts for the club and we cannot thank them enough for taking on senior coaching roles and a er a pre-season disrupted by injuries, including season ending injuries, these two grades will show significant improvement from round one. Great to see Jess McGregor back on court - a talented club junior who went on to be a dancing queen but returned to the club this year... To be honest, just great to see all grades of seniors back on court a er a year on the sidelines... Taking on West Gambier this weekend - don't forget post game brinks and nibbles and for our junior players - a great me to stay (or come back!!!) and watch our A Grade in ac on...

We also celebrated 50 game milestones for Annabel Judd, Toneya Carraill & Jasmyne Lamb and a 100 game milestone for Olivia James. Congratula ons girls. How good was it to see our teams hi ng the court a er a long year away from the game!

Our first home game back for season 2021, with the Saints welcoming many new and past players to the club with all grades having a very successful day on the court, despite the challenging weather. Thank you to all sponsors for player awards this season.

A er a busy couple of months by our commi ee, coaches and volunteers to get things organised behind the scenes and of course lots of training by our players we could finally it the court again against north.

A Grade The reigning premiers have lost several players from their 2019 team, forcing the Saints to play a different style of netball in a ack. Paige and Lucy worked hard out the front of the goalies to gain circle posi oning to ensure accurate feeding into the goalies. With Tabatha holding strongly at the post in her first star ng debut the girls quickly ran to a considerable lead at half me. Lisa came off at half me with a calf injury, giving young star Paige Lucas the opportunity to hit the court in her A grade debut, making a strong impression in WD. The saints con nued the game with full court defensive pressure, with Kimmi and Hannah combining well in the circle, forcing their a ackers to work hard for every ball. The pair switched and transi oned smoothly into a ack, where Demi and Tabatha con nued to be strong at the post. The girls worked hard all day and brought home a 57 to 30 goal win, with the best players going to Demi Verbena and Kimmi Tincknell.

Our juniors started there season off strong with lots of posi ve netball played in some challenging winter weather. Well done to the 11 and unders along with the 15b side both teams star ng off with a win. The 17 and Under side coached by Madi Mutch and Kerri Harvey was very impressive coming away with a convincing 43-26 victory. C grade coached by Bridie Ayton (nee Tierney) and A res lead by Madelaine Cleary both come across strong North sides but definitely showed great signs for the coming weeks. Renae Newell lead from the front in her B grade teams 29-21 victory. Our A grade side coached by Tori Broomby (nee Perry) lined up against an experienced and polished north side. Cats had several key players missing but s ll managed to make great opportunity with the ball at mes but lacked consistently. Thank you players who doubled up and filled in to ensure we had enough players on the court with lots of girls unavailable round 1. Congratula ons and thank you Madelaine Cleary and Natalie Rhook our coaching coordinators for there hard work and dedica on over the past months. We can't wait to see Island Park full of ac vity versus Millicent Saturday. A Reserve The A reserve started the season welcoming back Ali, Shelby and Tiarna. New combina ons throughout the court saw Ali and Sophie combining in goals, with the midcourt made up of Tiarna, Shelby and Alana. The a ack line flowed well for the Saints throughout the game, with the girls using their speed and finishing with precise passing. A defensive line consis ng of Alice and Jo saw the girls working relessly to cause many turnovers and keeping the Demons scoreless in the first quarter. Alana caused many turnovers and transi oned the ball through to the a ackers well. The last quarter saw the injec on of three junior Saints with Daisy, Paige and Por a all playing well, with the rest of the team adap ng quickly to a different lineup. Overall, a great team effort for the whole game, ending with a 59 to 11 goal win. Best players going to Sophie and Alice. B Grade A new look B Grade team welcomed new coach Jacqui Ma hews who played a strong role in the Saints team Saturday. With many new combina ons in the team, the girls suffered a slow start. We would like to acknowledge our sponsors for 2021 for North Gambier Netball Club; Stuckey Electrical, KFC, Fasta Pasta, Lawrence & Hanson and Neale and Nulty Transport. Saturday was our first game together as a team so we knew we needed to gel right from the first whistle. We managed to do this, taking the lead in the first quarter 17 to West 4. We maintained a strong team game throughout the rest of the game coming away with a win 63 - 36. Lisa Fyfe was outstanding in the defence end, turning over crucial balls early to help stretch our lead out. She played her first game for East Gambier and came away with 2nd best. In 3rd best, was Tyne Bosko who was also very dominant in the defence end playing and all round consistent game. Tenille Gray played an outstanding game in goals and was awarded first best.

Sam Piero - Tegan Gray What a start to the season, both teams came out hungry for their first win. West had a very young side but were very impressive from the start and caught us off guard. We took me in se ling into the game but managed to take the reins early. We had some great defensive work from Michelle & Sharna early into the quarter and some strong intercepts from Jasmine ge ng the ball down to the a ack line. Both Alysia & Casey had to work hard in the circle but once in they managed to score. Quarter me and we were down, we knew we had to try harder. Once again the defence line worked hard with the a ack line to even the scores at half me. Going down in the 3rd quarter we knew we had lost our concentra on and needed to find something to fire us up. It took everything we had half way through that last quarter for us to come together as a team and finish of the quarter with a great shoo ng effort from both Alysia & Casey to take out the quarter 13 goals to West only scoring 6 leading us to our first win for the season. Great effort by the whole team and very proud of the effort they put in. Lets back it up next week with another win against North.
