Despite enjoying the home ground advantage, the Roos face an uphill battle to keep their season alive against a Saints side which has won each head-tohead battle this year by 40, 38 and 53 points respectively The Saints’ superior percentage gave them the advantage on the ladder, but when the rivals faced offtherewaslittleseparatingthem. Despite last week’s defeat to the Tigers where the Roos blew a 33-8 quarter time lead, McElroy has already dismissed concerns from it and believes his menwillbeanewsidewithmoreontheline.

Thompson played many years as ruckman Paul Keast’s second ruckman and as a back pocket or defender, he played it tight and gave his opponent little leeway. In the 1979 grand final coach Barry Padley gave Thompson the task of tagging West champion full forward Bill Chapman. He followed him everywhere, spoilt when he had to, and out marked the former VFA star on other occasions. There was nothing fancy about his play, but it was effectiveandheplayedabigroleinNorth’sflagwin.I put Thompson in my top four North best players in that grand final but the North selectors saw it otherwise, despitetheroletheygavehim. After a slow start to the season, the Roos have come home strongly and defeated their 1st semi final opponents N o r t h G a m b i e r l a st weekendby16goals. Langford will be looking for her defensive partner Tayla Wilson-Smith and the mid court of Chelsea Tremelling and Anna Bosco to place pressure on the Tigers feeders so the ball coming into Mitchell is not as accurate. Thebattlebetweencentres Bosco and O'Shaughnessy will be one of the match shaping contests of the clash with both blessed with speed and also physicallytough. Mitchell has been prolific with her scoring for the Tigers, while Langford is the general of the Roos backline and responsible forcreatingmuchofWest's turnoverball. At the other end of the court, West goalers Claire Hunter and Jasmyn Davey are coming off best on court performances and their chemistry as a duo and good accuracy will be a factor in this match, especially with Bosco and Bryn Kuller feeding the ball withprecision. Youngsters Alysha Coon, Ava Collins and Elyse Willoughby will have the task of denying Hunter and Davey too many scoring opportunities. It looms as a tough turnaround for the Tigers but it is a line-up that can get the job done if all their playersareavailable. This looms as a much tighter battle than that final minor round clash but West has had the edge in three of the four contests andshouldjustgetoverthe line and keep their season alive.

East will be looking to limit supply to Wakefield, who is bothprolificandaccuratewhen it comes to scoring and while that job will be in the hands of tenacious defender Morgan Amy, it will be the pressure out frontfromdefensivepartnerBo Creek and mid courters Emily HunterandTyneBoskothatwill tellthestoryofthecontest. The last time these two teams metitwasatensedrawsothe stage is set for a dramatic 1st semi final between South Gambier and Casterton Sandford.

At the other end Jess McGregor is the anchor of the Demons defensive line and is arguably coming off as good a month as any player in the C Gradecompetition. It is hard to see a world where Southdoesnotadvancetothe preliminaryfinal. South has the strong shooting combination of Ella Egan and Brooke Winterfield a combination that has now played a couple of seasons together and a combination thatisaccurateonthefinish. She will team with Mel Kuhl, who brings plenty of tight checking and determination tohergoaldefencerole, while Misty Dalton, Ange Queale, Ash Kuhl and Tara Bonney are an experienced and dynamic mid court with both Dalton and Bonney also able to fill a defensiverole. North need to bring their best for four quarters to have a chance of upsetting Casterton Sandford but you would think the Cats advance.

Casterton Sandford has their own quality with I n d i L o n g h u r s t dominating the mid court, Chelsea Hulm using perfect timing and accurate finishing to be a force in the shooting circle, while Sarah Richardson and Amy Crawford are a tight checking defensive combination who are especially strong in the Addair to that the height of shooter Olivia Nolte under the post, the smarts of Brydie Carlin who has a beautiful release into the circle, and then the hard running of Matilda Thompson, Hanah Nash and Caitlyn Gorman mean the Roos won't have it all their own way but they have too much firepower to let this one slip.

HayleyBrookscanalsobring relentless pressure to her role in the defensive wing, while Zarly Jones gives coachCarolineWakefieldan X factor with her ability to play mid court or head into theshootingcircle.

North has plenty of talent of its own, with regular A Grade player Lauran Norman one of the keys to the Tigers' success with her athleticism and strong positioning in goals and her combination with Ava Norman will test the Cats defensiveline.

And there is a stand out support cast as well with Chloe Foster, who has had A Grade experience as well, able to fill a shooting or mid c o u r t r o l e , M a r i s s a Jamieson now making her mark as a circle defender and Phoebe Carlin able to play any role on court with her strength in the air and netballsmarts.

Casterton Sandford have strength on every line with Ebany Jarrad leading the defence line, Ivy Lane dominating the shooting circle and Makayla Hutchins doingthedamageinthemid court. All three of those players have been regulars in the Cats A Grade line-up aswell.

Coco Mackereth, Gianna Morello and Alice Tentye, who can also head into the shooting circle if required, bring pace and tenacity to the mid court and they will need to continue to present to help their team work their way through the tough Cats defence, especially avoiding the intercepting abilityofJarrad.

The Cats have won two of the three encounters this season but the Tigers have a talented line up and this looms as a tough battle for one of these sides to keep theirseasonalive.

West Gambier has won all three cont4sts against the Bulldogs this season – two convincingly and one narrow winsotheyoungRoosshould enter the knockout final with confidence they can get the jobdone. Holly Jackson and Miley Vivian are a strong goaling combination. Holly uses the dodge to great effect, while Mileycontrolstheattackline, usesherspeedtogreateffect andisanaccuratefinisher AnnabelJudd,AvaReid,Demi Jennings and Maya Lynch form a hard running mid court that provide great transition from defence to offencewhenrequired. Abby Lines will lead the mid court, with strong support from Mia Young, Lillie Leitch, Charlotte Crute, Skye Wilson and Lily McIntosh, who all provide hard running, 100 per cent effort and a strong defensive mindset but the young Roos should get the job done and book a place in thepreliminaryfinal. Ava Halloran and Tayah Jones will take on the circle defence duties – they are both strong rebounders and tight checking and will de relied upon to create turnover ball, while Lacey Allen and Grace Collins bring versatility to the line-up. It is hard to read the form of West Gambier and North Gambierinseason2022. West has Matilda Neale and Claire Hunter getting the job done for them defensively andastheteamcaptains, they will be looking to lead from the front and create as much turnoverballaspossible. Last weekend showed it could be anyone's game but North should get the job done in a tightcontest.

The Tigers have strength all over the court, with Raine Darimaani leading the defence line and Georgia Nulty able to influence the game in any position on court, while Lacey Allen and Mischa Human bring height and strong positioning to the shootingcircle.
