MILLICENT v WEST GAMBIER EAST GAMBIER v CASTERTON SANDFORD NORTH GAMBIER v SOUTH GAMBIER
GAME PREVIEW North Gambier v South Gambier The biggest occasion on the Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League arrives this Monday when North and South Gambier face off for their traditional bumper Anzac Day battle. Crowds will gather at Vansittart Park to celebrate the Anzac spirit and pay respects to those who served their country over the years in Gallipoli, Kokoda, Afghanistan and all places in between. The moving Anzac Day ceremonies including the Ode and Last Post will set the scene before the Tigers and Demons take centre stage. But the home side has a battle of its own ahead coming up against the leading early candidate for the minor premiership. The Demons looked flawless cruising past Millicent and East Gambier in the opening two rounds. Ominously for the rest of the competition South is not quite at full strength and at times has looked to be humming along in fourth gear. Coach Brayden Kain has been at his dominant best kicking seven goals, but has a lot of supporters around him from the experienced in Brodie Foster and the young in Mitch Sims. But the team has suffered some setbacks with Mason Hein (split liver) and Josh Woodall (ligaments) out of action for a few weeks. Kain said the occasion of Anzac Day is never lost on him. “It is positive to have a 2-0 start before we have a break heading into big build up leading into Anzac Day, which is always super exciting,” he said. “It is the second biggest day behind the grand final, so we are always very privileged to play and it is one thing we never take for granted.” North has a point to prove after going down to West Gambier in a classic encounter last round and losing the previous Anzac Day battle by 94 points. Despite being engulfed by some immense pressure from the Roos in round 2, the Tigers still played with plenty of hunger and desperation led by Jake Schutz and Hamish Telford in a contest that went down to the final second. But the wounds from finishing on the losing after a 21-1 opening quarter would still be healing. Having backed up a convincing win over East with a heartbreaking defeat, it is tricky to read where Ben Hardy’s team sits in the grand scheme of things,

Last round we headed out to Blue Lake Sports Park to take on South Gambier with the sun shining it was a beautiful day for footy and netball.
In the ressies there were alot of new faces with a covid depleted senior list, Cole had too do alot of ringing around to come up with the numbers.
In the 14's we started off very competitively then an achilles injury to young gun Javi Mee who was probably best on til then, after that the South lads took control of game in the second quarter and scored heavily, to our boys credit they rallied in the second half and defended really well. Best players R lawrence, C McCracken, B Sampson, R Grigg , R Mitchell and S Telford.
Best players were T McCourt, T Graney, J Lines, T Shepherd and C Little.
In the 16's we struggled most of the day against a good South team but we didn't give up best players A Clarke K McCracken, J L a w re n c e , L R i c h a rd s , C McLean & N Bignell.
In the A grade we didn't start well South kicked 5 goals to zip in the first quarter so we were pushing it up hill for the rest of the game, few shining lights youngest of the lock clan Sam and Conner Barry playing really good footy best players Sam Lock, Shaun Lock, J Eldridge, T Balshaw, C Barry and G Cooper.
This week we host cross border rivals Casterton who have been playing some good footy so we'll see you at the kennel with the weather looking really good it's looking like it's going In the 18's Dunny was going to to be a good day for it. be in for a long day with a few lads playing in the covid Congratulations to Angus depleted senior teams but the Clarke on playing in the Glenelg boys had a crack against some u16's on the weekend doing a bigger South side. the club proud Best players A Clarke, H Puhara, L Bea Htoo, K McCracken, K Wagener, E Mwee Htoo. Special mention too Angus clarke and Ky McCracken on getting in the best in 16's and 18's top effort.

It was great to be back at Island Park for Western Border Football, those of us in early got to see the Under 14 Cats get another win, this time by 84 points. Jedd Rhook was impressive with 5 goals as was Jett Lykke who was adjudged B.O.G. after picking up a swag of possessions and 2 goals. The team played well under the tutelage of fill in Coach Billy Galpin and if they can keep those types of efforts up will go far once its Finals time.

interesting to see a Saints jumper worn as a worse half but the wearer is an Angel so she may have not got the memo. Plenty of future social events coming up Cat fans so come along and support your club and have a great time with great people. Thank you to all the door knockers from the club who got around the town and collected for the kids at the RCH on Good Friday.
The Reserves had a crack but were unable to bring the choccies home in the end despite it coming up to Easter and an eggsellent second half effort, no doubt Joey will have the lads doing a bit eggstra before the game against East.
T h i s we e ke n d we a re at McDonald Park, East Gambier, now the Doggies always put on a good show for us and today will be no exception I'm sure. East seniors have been unlucky to date and will be looking to get their first win for the season and it will be up to us The Seniors were a bit under- supporters to get our Cats manned against a very well home, Carn the Cats! drilled Millicent side and were unable to pull of the heroics Thank-you to all our valued shown in the West game, sponsors including Boonaroo, Kaneo and his men will be Nutrien Ag Solutions, Bendigo looking to get back on the B a n k , a n d C a s t e r t o n winners list this weekend with Secondary College hopefully a full list to pick from. I am told that the Best HalfWorse Half night was enjoyed by those who attended and for the most part the worse half could have been, for lack of a better word, worse. surprise that the best players were mainly from those that have been trainings, with Youngy naming himself best, with others in Mayson Ashby, Ethan Norman, Reece McLaughlin and Danny Poyner. A big congratulations to 15yo Iowani Coleman on his senior debut. Iowani was rewarded for his pre-season efforts and early season form. We are all excited to see how far footy can take him.
North and South are privileged to play sport on this day and we have made this game one of the most important in the local football and netball calender. The wash-up from R2 was 4 games for 4 Demon wins so the scorecard has been a blemish free so far.
We acknowledge one-sided scores in junior ranks aren't ideal as kids need competition but it's a tough one for us. We run our junior program as well as we can and can't impact what other clubs do. Our goal is always participation and fun first, premierships second - but they seem to go hand-in-hand. FOOTY JENS HOTEL
WITH A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE FROM THE ARCHIVES FOOTY: THE EARLY YEARS: WBFL: 1966 McDONOUGH STARS WITH SEVEN GOALS Bulldogs remain as lone SA club EAST Gambier went into 1966 trying to defend its premiership crown won the previous year when the club won its first A grade premiership. The Bulldogs’ successful captain-coach Fred Hepner was again at the helm, giving him five years at the Kennel. But it did not go all that smoothly for the Bulldogs. West Adelaide grabbed talented youngster Jack Pannenburg and he would go on to have a great league career with the SANFL club, mainly as a ruckrover. Veteran Johnnie Smith decided to go on one more year and while East still had a good number of their premiership team in place, they struggled with consistency through the year. In the end they got into the bottom two rungs of the top four with Portland, Coleraine, Casterton and East making up the final four. Casterton made the Western Border Football League finals for the first time after missing out in 1964 and 65 through losing their last minor round games of each season. The Cats were “purring” and ready for East for the first semi final which was to be played at Melville Oval, Hamilton, which many believed would give the advantage to Casterton. It was a typical final and the result was still in doubt even after the final siren. It all came down to the final kick of the match. Just moments before the final siren East was leading by six points when Casterton rover Des Currie received a free kick about 45 metres from goal on a slight angle. If Currie kicked the goal a draw would have resulted. As he started his approach to kick for goal the siren sounded as he was in his last kicking stride, he stuttered for a moment, hesitated and then went through with the kick but it fell short and bounced through for a behind leaving East victors by five points and a place in the preliminary final. Casterton were gallant in defeat and most believed the team had set the foundations for a launch at the premiership in the near future. That would happen in 1969. East started in very confident fashion, and in fact looked like the premiership team of the previous year. Jock O’Brien was breaking everything open through the midfield with his strong clearing dashes into the forward line and some of his drop kicks covered 5060 metres to the goal square. It was here where East cleverly had the height advantage and Hepner had positioned both Mike McDonough and Robert Lane near the goal square
and they soon had the scoreboard ticking over. Aided by accurate kicking, East soon had five goals from six scoring shots. Quarter time: East 5.1, Casterton 2.0 Leading by 19 points at quarter time East got a football lesson in the second term when Casterton’s fast run-on style was at its best. Cats captain-coach Ian McCallum switched Mick O’Connell from centre half forward to full forward and the goalless Merv Wombwell to centre half forward and immediately these two moves “clicked” and Casterton’s score mounted. Wombwell was too fast and elusive for East centre half back Hugh Buckley and O’Connell outplayed and out-positioned Bob Wohlenberg at full forward. Half backs Noel Miller and Rob Klintberg had to work overtime in defence to hold Casterton at bay, but they kept coming. East had started the second term with McDonough at centre half forward and Dennis Smith at full forward and it was through the dominance of McDonough that East managed four goals as he went on his way to kicking seven for the match, but Casterton went into the main break after kicking 7.1 in the second term and trailed only by two points at half time. One of the features by both sides was their accuracy in front of goal with 18 goals coming from 22 shots. Half time: East 9.3; Casterton 9.1 Casterton continued to outplay East in the third term, taking plenty of risks and reaping the rewards. Kicking only three behinds in the third term East trailed by 15 points at the last change and the Cats had everything to play for. Three quarter time: East 9.6; Casterton 12.3 East made wholesale changes and Harry Johns came off the bench only to collide with a Casterton opponent moments later, disclocated his left shoulder and he had to be replaced. It was when Wohlenberg quietened Wombwell that East looked likely to steal the game. With Buckley also getting plenty of the ball at centre half back East started to look a likely winner. Buckley was amazing in the way he could “come back” at an opponent after being beaten early and he did this again in this final. East had struggled for most of the past quarter in attack and the move of Jock O’Brien to half forward brought immediate results and with his pace and accurate passing to McDonough and Lane, East started to look impressive. It really was these three who inspired the East fight back. McDonough soon took his goal tally to seven with another brilliant overhead mark and goal and soon East had kicked five goals for the term while Casterton had been held to just two. Twice Casterton went into attack and from close range could manage two behinds and then East
GREENWOOD pushed forward to increase their lead to six points when the siren sounded and Currie’s kick after the siren fell short and bounced through for a behind. Final scores: East 14.11 (95); Casterton 14.6 (90) Mike McDonough’s seven goals gave him the nod as best man on the ground. His sure marking and accurate kicking was feature for the Bulldogs. His marking judgement and ability to soar into packs to pull in some amazing marks made him the stand-out forward in the game. What made McDonough such a dangerous forward was his elite anticipation and an ability to know when and where to lead to find bullet-like passes from players up-field such as Jock O’Brien, Brian Lane and Fred Hepner. This, plus his amazing leaping ability, which, as shown in the accompanying photo, allowed him to climb over the back of defenders and pull in great grabs. As an aside, McDonough was also a top tap ruckman but East could not afford to play him in that role without robbing their forward line – as his seven goals showed. If they had two of him, they might have won more premierships during that era. Half back Rob Klintberg played his heart out and with his skilful ground play held Casterton out time and again. Hugh Buckley fought back to hold Wombwell in check to play an important part in the victory while Jock O’Brien and Robert Lane were significant factors all day, but particularly in the last term. Casterton full forward Mick O’Connell finished with five goals to be their best player and Merv Wombwell was not far behind while rover Peter Kellett and defender Johnnie Gartland were others to play well. East now had a week’s rest and awaited the outcome of the second semi final between Portland and Coleraine. Despite this, East had their problems. Ruck rover Johnnie Smith was limping badly after the game and much talk centre around whether Fred Hepner’s brother and co-rover Graham Hepner would return to after missing six weeks with injury. PHOTO: Mike McDonough was the stand-out forward with seven goals and best on the ground for East Gambier. Here he leaps high to take a great pack mark over Casterton follower Tony Neylon while Ian Jenkins and Rob Klintberg (24) await the outcome.

MATCH REPORTS NORTH GAMBEIR V WEST GAMBIER The Roos mean business and despite not having State 19 & Under goal shooter Sarah Ri er at their disposal, got the job done over North Gambier. Last week, it was the Tigers ge ng the jump in the first quarter to get the be er of East but it was the Roos returning the favour this week, the 20-10 opening quarter se ng up the win. Claire Hunter stepped seamlessly into the goal shooter posi on, ne ng 13 from 14 with Lisa McGregor also finishing accurately with seven from eight as Roos made every post a winner in the opening stanza. It was a dominance set up by the defence of the Roos though, who kept North to only 12 scoring opportuni es and were it not for the perfect finishing of Caroline Wakefield, the damage could have been worse. Not only did circle defenders Jade Ri er and Amy Cram deny the Tigers frontline me and space but the en re team refused to concede easy possession, working hard through the mid court with Zoe Malseed and Tara Bryant also not le ng the Tigers feeders easy access to the circle’s edge. The match se led a li le in the second, although the Roos s ll had the be er of the Tigers to enjoy a 14 goal half me lead. McGregor was the prolific scorer, with 10 from 12. Wakefield con nued to be a strong target for the Tigers in the second half, ne ng 25 from 27, but North just could not create enough turnover ball to eat into the deficit and when West shot a perfect 15 from 15 in the final quarter, there was no ge ng back and the final margin was 12, even though the Tigers did win the final quarter by four. Macey Griffith backed up her strong debut performance in round one for North with another stellar performance, while Wakefield was again her side’s best. Tenielle Human made her Tigers A Grade debut and the talented defender certainly did not disgrace herself, especially taking on a slick West frontline and North will be keen to qualify the athle c circle defender despite her basketball commitments.
The scary thing is West is s ll building a new look mid court and are arguably reaping the rewards of having given the likes of Zoe Malseed and Mikaela Horrigan plenty of me in the top grade in previous seasons. SOUTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER The reigning premiers have their first win of 2022 but it was not without a huge fight from the improving Demons. Missing Sarah Lock, East elevated smart shooter Casey Horrigan and new recruit Renee Henke to the top grade to share the shoo ng role a er having played A Reserve already. With Tyne Bosko and Bo Creek back in the defensive line a er missing the opening round, the Bulldogs would have been confident of having the firepower to take on South Gambier but the young Demons had other ideas. The defensive combina on of Grace Edwards and Imogen Walker played together as if they had already been okaying together for a couple of years – not teaming up for the first me – and the ball movement in the South frontline was also impressive as the Demons matched it with the Bulldogs in the opening stanza. East’s lead was only two at the first change but a stellar second quarter, where Lara Munro was the key target in goals and in accuracy plagued the Bulldogs goalers, and by the main break, South had concocted a three goal lead. Weight of supply was also responsible for the Demons’ dominance, crea ng 23 scoring opportuni es to 16. It was an arm wrestle in the third as well with South taking a two goal lead into the last although the signs were there that the Bulldogs were coming with the ball spending a lot more me in East’s a acking third than the Demons. In the final quarter, the script returned to pregame predic ons with the Bulldogs, led by the mid court dominance of Tarsh McCallum and Emily Hunter, se ling and earning plenty fo ball, with Amryn Bosko moving back to shooter and ne ng 12 from 14 to lead the reigning tleholders to a three goal victory. There were just too many errors from the
DENTON’S
young Demons as they moved the ball into their a acking third with Creek, Tyne Bosko and Morgan Amy pouncing on any wayward pass. Learning to win will be the challenge for South Gambier, while for East, it is just a ma er of ge ng wins on the board un l the new line-up can spend some me together. CASTERTON SANDFORD V MILLICENT Millicent looked ominous in its first round ou ng against South Gambier and nothing changed at the weekend as the Saints easily got the job done against the Cats. The young defensive unit of Ebany Jarrad and Caeleigh Humhpries never gave up as they looked to limit the opportuni es for star shoo ng duo Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena but the weight of supply eventually told as Paige Nitschke hit the circle hard and fed the ball with precision me and me again. Nitschke and Verbena swapped roles at the half but the scoring avalanche and precision feeding con nued, while at the other end of the court Por a McRae and Hannah Nitschke were making scoring difficult for the Casterton Sandford frontline. Both sides were able to showcase the rising talent in the compe on, with Ivy Lane entering the match for the Cats in the final quarter for her A Grade debut and she finished t h e q u a r te r w i t h a p e r fe c t s h o o n g performance. While the Saints had Daisy Tunkin run the centre and she showed she is more than comfortable at the level, while Lauren Van Eeden made her A Grade debut for Millicent on the defensive wing, while Millicent also changed things up with Georgia Clarke having a turn in the defensive circle. Scarle Jarrad con nues to lead the way for the Cats and she will welcome back some of the more experienced campaigners later in the season, while her influence on the young members of her team can only be posi ve as she shows great tenacity at both ends of the court.
ROUND PREVIEWS NORTH GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER The tradi onal ANZAC Day clash looms as one of the most compe ve in recent memory, with South Gambier keen to make their mark a er years of le ng the Tigers be the dominant force. Of course, with Caroline Wakefield star ng the season with two outstanding games, showing her usual accuracy and being such a strong target for North Gambier and with Brianna Walters, the 2021 Shirley Underwood Medallist, using her speed and class with ball in hand to great effect, the Tigers will s ll start favourite. Mel Renko has returned to the defensive circle and her ght checking and ability to create turnover ball will also be cri cal. The Demons welcome back defender Ellie Bouchier, a er she has missed the opening wo rounds and with Grace Edwards, provides some serious tall mber to combat the influence of Wakefield. The ba le between Bouchier and 2022 A Grade debutant Macey Griffith will be one of the most pivotal of the match. Griffith has shown great composure and a willingness to a ack the post in her first two ou ngs, while Bouchier reads the play well and will look to use her height advantage to make life tough for the Tigers frontline. Megan Reid will get the job of going toe to toe with Walters through the centre and the young Demon has the pace and smarts to match it with the clever North midcourter, while in the Demons shoo ng circle, Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro will need to be pa ent, smart and accurate and make sure as many scoring opportuni es as possible end up on the scoreboard. Recent ANZAC clashes have seen South have one or two strong quarters but totally lose concentra on for periods of me that have cost them dearly on the scoreboard. If the Demons can s ck with the Tigers, who opened their 2022 season with a solid win over East, this could be one of the more entertaining and gripping clashes and while the Demons might not take the points, they should well and truly make North earn them in a nailbiter.
EAST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD A loss to North and a close victory over South have made for a tough opening for the reigning premiers but as they con nue to work with their new look combina on, they will be looking to put together a four quarter performance against Casterton Sandford. The Bulldogs are yet to put out their preferred seven on court and that has been a similar problem for the Cats, who are also s ll working around player unavailability and looking to find the best combina ons as we move deeper into the 2022 season. Charlo e Rice, Caeleigh Humphries, Claire Foster and Ebany Jarrad are the rising talent of this line-up and they will only con nue to improve as the season progresses. Humphries, Foster and Jarrad bring tenacity and a willingness to contest every ball to the defensive end, while Rice looms as a strong target for the Cats in the shoo ng circle. Scarle Jarrad has been Casterton Sandford’s best in the opening two rounds and her hard running in the mid court, having an influence at both the defensive and a acking end of the court, has been the glue that has held the Cats’ performance together in the early going of 2022. Her ba le in the middle with Emily Hunter will be physical with neither taking a backwards step, while the hard running of Tarsh McCallum and strong posi oning and accurate finishing of Amryn Bosko will be cri cal will certainly test the young Cats defensive line. At the other end, Bo Creek, who played her first game for the year in round two, showed her full bag if tricks in the chao c final quarter in the narrow win over South as she dominated the air and picked off any wayward passing. Creek’s combina on with Morgan Amy will take some me to gel, despite having played together in previous seasons, but their ght checking will ensure the Cats have to be pa ent and careful in their delivery into their shooters. East should rack up its second win of the season but expect the Cats to fight hard.
WEST GAMBIER V MILLICENT It is a top of the table clash but with the Roos missing star shooter Sarah Ri er on State du es at the na onal championships and her sister Jade, who would normally take the goal keeper bib, also on the sidelines suppor ng her sister, it will not be a true test of these two classy line-ups. Missing Jade Ri er from the defensive circle also adds to the challenge of stopping Tabatha Sanderson, who has started the season with two dominant performances, especially when you consider the star shooter is fortunate to have the precise delivery from Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke ensuring she has the ball in good shoo ng posi on. The good news for the Roos is Claire Hunter took the goal shooter bib in Sarah Ri er’s absence last round and showed great confidence in taking the shot and combined well with coach and goal a ack Lisa McGregor. The West mid court of Tara Bryant, Mikaela Horrigan and Zoe Malseed looks set to be formidable and the trio have played so much netball together now that they have a great understanding. Bryant’s ba le for Daisy Tunkin will be a highlight of the match, as will be the way the young Roos mid court looks to work their way through the defensive pressure of Georgia Clarke, Hannah Nitschke and Por a McRae. It is hard not to see the Saints remaining undefeated, but it will s ll be a great hit out for the Roos to see where they are at despite missing two key piece of their line-up.

Millicent Red, Black & White Seniors All seniors teams were able to come away with strong wins against some tough contests from Casterton. It was a highlight for all to see youngster Lauren van Eeden debut in the A grade side at WD play a great game! Tabatha Sanderson also had another great game contributing to the high final score of 85, being recognised as best player once again.
V
Juniors Our junior teams set the tone for a successful day early, with all teams taking a win one again. The 17 & under side stayed consistent for all four quarters in a tight game between two sides determined to come out with the w i n . A l l p l aye rs a re to b e commended on their ability to adapt to rotations made due to the loss of four team members to senior sides. In the 15B side, it was great to see the girls begin to gel and work well with one another. The effects of COVID meant the team was missing three players, but a big thank you to Jeda, Ashlee and Asha for stepping up and helping out. It was a stellar game to watch with lots of defensive turnovers and great transitions down the court. With the seniors requiring support from the junior teams this week, it is clear to see what talented young netballers we have coming through the ranks of our club.
The club also had the pleasure of welcoming a further three 17 & under players, Abby Denton, Ella Easterby and Lily Paul into the A reserve side for their senior debut for the club. The A reserve started strong and were able to build on this to allow them to hold on to the lead against a determined Casterton side. It was another good win on the board for the C grade with a new face to the club, Keelie Lindner, helping her team to maintain a comfortable lead the whole game in GS. Alannah Pratt was also a standout for the game working As a club we are very proud of our h a r d a n d s h o w i n g o f f h e r start to the season. All members of our netball club have worked versatility! tirelessly to support one another The B grade continued to show i n s o m e u n p r e d i c t a b l e their strengths, coming off of a circumstances each weekend, confidence booster win against a n d w e l o o k f o r w a r d t o South in round one. All 7 players continuing this throughout the played well on a warm day with season! Go Saints! defensive pressure all over the court to ensure a sizable margin by the end of the final quarter.

Welcome to round 3! Hoping everyone enjoyed their Easter break and is raring to go to get back into it! Round two saw us take on North, and I think every single team was compromised somehow due to covid restrictions, whether it be players or volunteers. Thank you to everyone who stepped up to fill the void. We also celebrated a milestone game this round with Jasmine Davey reaching 150 club games. Well done Jaz!! Under 11s The girls got off to a great start. Molly and Harper creating great movement in the circle and finishing with some great goals. Miah, Mackenzie and Jorja worked the ball through to the goals with some excellent passing. Aggie and Chaneil were picking off plenty of Norths passes. Our changes didn't slow us down. Zoe worked well in centre and was well supported by Ruby in defence. Phoebe and Mackenna had great ball movement in the goal circle. Great game by everyone. West 25 – North 3 Best players - Molly Thomas and Zoe Boyd
U/13B West girls came out firing from the first second of the game, and came out on top at every break. With almost all of the girls back we were able to see the hard work we had been doing over the preseason. Each of the girls worked extremely hard, from Claire and Sara getting turn over after turnover, to Ella, Sammy and Isobel moving it through the mid court, and Matilda, Eva and Isla finishing up the hard work the team did. This was a hard game to separate the best, as everyone put 100% in. Super proud to see a nice win on the board, and we have only just started to shine. With Hannah back next game I know we have so much more to give!! Let’s go West!! West 18 – North 6 Best players - Ella Mckenny and Matilda Neale Game day awards - Samantha Foster and Matilda Neale U/13A We welcomed back Brydee for her first game. Our preparations for the game were less than ideal given, like many teams, we experienced covid disruptions and player unavailability. We faced a more polished, taller north side and while we came away with things to work on, we had many positives. We are looking forward to the challenge ahead. West 23 – North 38 Best players - Lila Pearson and Lara Murdoch Game day awards - Kara Murray and Lara Murdoch
U/15B This week saw a few challenges thrown at our girls, who definitely stood up and met them head on. A massive thanks to Tully Lindner for stepping in when we were a player short. Our shooters Miley and Holly were shooting great despite the challenging wind, and were supported well by our mid court team of Annabel, Maya and Demi. With Macy out this week, our defensive team consisted of the gritty duo, Zarah and Ava, who were able to gain numerous turn overs. However North were a bit too strong this time, taking the win. West 30 – North 38 Best players - Tully Lindner and Ava Reid U/15A Tough game against quality opposition, however still pleasing to see connections across the court begin to develop resulting in some great passages of play!! Keep on working hard at training and bring on round 3! West 32 – North 63 Best players – Ella Jolley and Lucy Simpson Game day awards - Lucy Simpson and Alex Hudson
Blue & Red U/17 We played a tough game against North, with only half of our team available due to covid. U15 players stepped up and all played a fantastic game. Unfortunately North had the upper hand. Maddie was a star in GD, doing fantastic work zoning out the shooters. Amity was thrown into the deep end in WD, but kept her head held high and was constantly backing up. Everyone played very well, despite the loss. West 16 – North 49 Best players - -Maddie Millich and Alex Hudson Game day awards – Maddie Millich and Amity Sheedy C Grade A tough second game for our girls on the weekend, unfortunately North ran away with a win but the girls did not let that get in the way of an awesome performance from all. With a couple of girls out, it was awesome to see each girl step up and play their best. With some great mid court from Olivia and Bella the ball was really carried into our attacking end, where our shooters Lisa and Mikalea put up a tough fight against some strong defenders. A massive well done to our defensive end both Emily and Alyssa held up their end to keep the shooters out the best they could, and with Karli stepping up in the ring and getting those rebounds. Although it was a good game from the girls there is still a lot of potential and a long way to go for the rest of the season. A huge thanks to Kelly for stepping up and playing the last quarter for us and to Amity and Maddie for sitting bench. We look forward to working on improving our skills over the next couple weeks to take on the Saints in Round 3. West 19 – North 37 Best players Alyssa Campbell and Olivia James B Grade A hard game against a tough opposition. Keep working hard girls, and we will see it all come together. West 26 – North 67 Best players – Maddie Millich and Bianca Jackway A Reserve Another gutsy win by the girls against a tight checking North Gambier line-up up. Special thanks to Tahli Earl, Kirby Hunter, and Bianca Jackway for putting their hands up to bolster our Covid depleted team; it's great to have support and depth within our club. All the girls continued to combine well as a team no matter what combination took the court and held their composure to come away with the win. Congratulations to Jasmine on playing her 150th game West 46 – North 41 Best players Tahlia Earl and Bryna Kuller Agrade Very happy to get a win today particularly with a new combination out on court in goals. Claire was solid in her first full game in A grade - we are very proud of you!! Overall our defence was impressive to watch, working together as a unit to cause many turnovers and giving our attack so many opportunities to convert. Best of luck to Sarah Ritter competing in the state U19 competition in Tasmania. West 68 – North 56 Best players Lisa McGregor and Claire Hunter Wishing all our teams the best of luck today as we travel to Millicent to go up against the Saints. Keep your eye on the red and the Blue! GO WEST!!
East Gambier Red & Black A Grade East 41 won against South 38 East got off to a slow start but credit to South who are a young talented side and put the pressure on early. From the moment they stepped on court, the determination and the want to win was evident. The flow down the court and connection between working partners was great. Round 2 at Island Park unfortunately didn’t see the home ground advantage hoped for by the Cats. With many Cats girls unavailable, and hot & humid conditions for those playing, their skills and determination were put to the test against the strong Millicent sides.
JUNIORS: The Under 11 team saw Pinelopi & Mia rising to the skill level of the Millicent girls. Alongside them all teammates made some terrific turnovers and passes, but with the experienced defense of Millicent, they were only able to put 3 goals on the board to their 33. Keep an eye on these girls though Mums & Dads, they may be our underdogs for the season. We saw a determined bunch of girls in the Under 13B team. They never gave up, fighting until the very end, but unfortunately came away with a close loss of 23-26. Phoebe, Marlee & Georgia all played terrifically again this week. A lot of our 13B’s had to step up into the Under 13A’s once again, and they didn’t disappoint. Although the score line finished at 2-76, it did not reflect the fair & skilled game played by our young Cats girls. Especially Marlee, Rachel, Ylana & Adele who encouraged their teammates throughout the game. Under 15B’s players Indi, Hanah & Matilda, led their players into a challenging match against Millicent on Saturday morning. The girls had some great p a s s a g e s o f p l a y, b u t unfortunately it didn’t pay off and they had a loss 11-32.
Blue, White & Red strength in our Under 17’s. With a 11 goal loss 32-43, the girls weren’t able to take the same triumphing win as Round 1, but played with rigour & immense amounts of effort, forever refusing to give up. Skilled play was evident when Millicent stepped on for the first quarter in the C Grade, and we knew our Cats girls were in for a challenging game. Janine, Brittany, and Tania were among these girls as they fought it out in the relentless midday sun. Unfortunately Millicent got the better of us and ran away with the win 24-44. Coach Bridie gave the B Grade Cats girls their inspiring pep talk pre game, and they came out strong with Tammy playing a critical role in defense, and Dakota & Tammy in midcourt. Although we saw many turnovers and great passages of play, they weren’t quite able to execute and had a loss 19-50. The A Reserves gave us another nail-biting game this week, coming into the second quarter after a slow first, they put some quick goals on the board & had Millicent players worried. Quickly recovering Millicent showed the best of their skills to stretch out there leading margin. Cats girls in Sharna, Bridie & Laura kept spirits up as they came back in the second half and closed the margin to only lose 41-50.
We saw the A Grade battle it out again this week, but unfortunately couldn’t come away with the win, losing 29-85. Scarlett, Caeleigh & Gaby continued to lift to the fast paced game of Millicent, while Charlotte made her presence The Under 15A’s were faced felt rattling key players of the with the most experienced of opposing side. Millicent’s junior players, and unfortunately lost 13-64. North Gambier Yellow & Black Under 11 North 3 def by West 23 The game started off well and everyone was trying very hard but west were a very strong team. They used all of the court area well and were able to get the ball down much easier than us. We need to remember to spread out more so that it provides lots of options for passing and taking the ball down to score. Best players: Isla Brook (sponsored by Squashbrook) and Isla Clarke Under 13B North 6 def by West 18 Definitely not our best game. Our players were unsettled and struggled to get their rhythm. Areas to improve on include, passing more accurately and not throwing away balls. Be an option, coming forward and meeting the ball. Hard work ahead but with the enthusiasm of these girls everything is possible! Best players: Ava Halloran (sponsored by Halloran Diesel) and Lacey Hunter Under 13A North 38 def West 23 We started our game strongly. All our players stuck to the game plan, which included strong shoulder passes and supportive communication. Both our attack and defence were solid. A good game to build on. Best players: Mischa Human and Georgia Nulty Under 15B North 38 def West 30 This week saw a warm day for the girls, but they were able to settle into the game a slow it down when needed. Milly and Mia were able to work well in goals and with the injection of Claire's fresh legs at half time saw us able to capitalise even further. Our mid court worked hard all game and Penny, Bella and Milly pulled in some good ball and were able to hold off a fast-finishing West side. Best players: Summer Mackereth and Penny Coleman Under 15A North 63 def West 32 A strong start saw North take a small lead at the end of the first quarter. By each break the girls continued to set goals and build on the lead. Macey Griffith and Elodie Adam were unstoppable in the ring with strong leads and confident shots taken. Sarah Brown And Cara Nulty combined beautifully in attack alongside Ava Collins who returned to the court. In defense, it was a team effort with Kelsie Anderson, Ruby Mitchell and Jayme Young taking timely intercepts and touches for the team to capitalise on. Best players: Elodie Adam and Ava Collins

Under 17’s North 49 def West 16 This week we saw a very different line up due to player unavailability. We were a little slow to start, but once we had settled our new combinations the girls displayed some beautiful netball. They worked hard for all four quarters finishing off very strongly in the final quarter. Another great team effort, that demonstrated the versatility of our team and the commitment and determination the girls have to play at their best. Best players: Tenille Human and Coco Mackereth C Grade North 37 def West 19 The team had an excellent game this week. A strong attack and accurate shooting led to an early lead which the girls were able to maintain throughout the game. The defence and mid court put a lot of pressure on the West attack, picking up a lot of intercepts and converting these into goals. Best Players: Kasey White and Keeley Quinn
B grade North 62 def West 27 The girls came out strong to get a good lead on West right from the start. Bri F and Ash worked extremely well in goals together with Gmac and Amelia backing them up around the circle. The defence was strong through the entire game, with Katie and Bri L getting some great interceptions. Jamie Young stepping on the court in the last quarter giving us some fresh legs and showing us what a little pocket rocket she is. Well done on a great win girls. Best players: Briana Fuller and Nat Fox A reserve North 41 def by West 46 Tough game this week just falling short with the end result. We showed lots of great passages of play in attack and our defenders played tough until the end. Well done to Ava Collins for playing her first seniors’ game - her speed and feeding skills were a great asset to our team and it will be great to see her confidence grow as the season goes on. Best players: Best players: Amanda O’Shaughnessy and Alysha Coon A grade North 56 def by West 68 It was a slow start to the game by north, even though we had some turnover ball early on. West have strong structures and connections all down the court, and it took a while for north to find their way in this match. West were too strong in the end, however North stayed with them and showed some great passages of play. Congratulations to Tenille Human who made her A grade debut. Best players: Macey Griffith and Breana Walters

First of all a huge thank you to everyone who got involved in the Hot Cross Bun fundraiser and for Mel Milich for heading it up and Fiona and Ella Matheson for stepping in when COVID hit to make sure the precious sweets were picked up and sorted out…it turned out to be a fantastic fundraiser for the club so stay tuned…
Thanks also to those who stepped up to help out with duties in our first home game of the season, especially when we again had the challenges of COVID and other absentees – it has been a messier than ideal start but the willingness of people to just things done and fill the roles that need filling has been greatly appreciated… The A Grade might not have ended up with the premiership points but they took it right up to the reigning premiers, eventually going down by three goals. It was a nice welcome back for new A Grade coach Tanya Hood and in only round two shows there is plenty to be optimistic about in 2022 if the girls put the work in and continue to improve… Grace has taken to her new role as a defender like a duck to water and having Imi able to step into the vacant goal defence role and get the job done was also amazing…
only learn from being part of these high intensity close games… A Reserve also showed enough in their clash, led by Mykaela in defence and Jaymee and Jess in the attack line, to show they will also be super competitive once the line-up has a chance to settle… B Grade and C Grade found their way onto the winners list with Leyna dominating in goals, Shelby running hard through the mid court and showing great leadership and Maca and Bella creating turnover ball at will to give their team the edge from the very first whistle. The C Grade saw Ella leading the attack line with great support from Brooke, although the win did come at a cost with Ariella set for a long stint on the sidelines after fracturing her ankle… This weekend the club has the privilege of being part of the ANZAC weekend matches and while the junior team play as per normal on Saturday, the senior teams play on April 25 and take part in the on field commemoration…it is a long standing tradition for the club and always good to be able to shine a light on the sacrifices of those who have gone before to ensure we have the freedoms we enjoy today…
Lara and Alyssa continue to grow as a shooting combination while the young mid court will
