The engine room features big names such as Hutchesson, Clint Gallio, Jacob Carger and Sam Willis and they all made key breakthroughs on the scoreboard. These names will be turned to once again to get the first win on the board in Millicent ’s premiership defence.

Casterton Sandford v Millicent After sides shook off the Christmas pudding and preseason rust in last weekend’s opening round, it is time to build some form before the 2022 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League season takes its first break in Easter. The chocolate will taste much sweeter for those teams who register wins this weekend with some looking to fire into 2022 with a barnstorming 2-0 North Gambier v West Gambier start, while others are looking to get off the mark. The 2019 WBFL grand final aspirants meet for the first time in 2022 at Vansittart Park in unique Six months ago a Millicent road trip to Casterton positions. would not excite too many fans with the eventual North Gambier showed some grit overcoming premiers coming up against the wooden some COVID-19 concerns and a slow start to topple arch rival East Gambier away from home. spooners. F.L. club. But it will be a tall order for the inexperienced squad to gel quickly against a more senior North outfit. South Gambier v East Gambier East Gambier was one of just two teams to topple South Gambier last year, but few will expect the Demons to fall short at Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend. The Demons are hungry to write the wrongs of last year and appeared an even better outfit scoring with and against the wind at McLaughlin Park. Coach Brayden Kain appeared in ominous form kicking four important goals as South’s efficiency made the difference. James Paproptny, Hamish Stevens and Liam Delaney entered the starting 18 like they were always meant to be there as the team was not afraid to move the ball aggressively with long and direct kicks to break away from the intense battle for possession. Kain predicts an unchanged team will take on the dogs in the team’s return to Blue Lake Sports Park. “We will be looking to go in unchanged which is a really good sign and the boys are excited for our first home game of the season,” he said. “We have to give East full respect because you cannot take in any assumptions until you have played everyone. “We will look to keep building the momentum and out in another consistent effort.” It might take a little longer for the new-look Bulldogs to find their feet under the guidance of co-coaches Jayden Eldridge and Matt Scanlon. Captain John Forster showed his leadership qualities, but a four-quarter effort is a must after a combined total of 1.4 across the first and third terms cost East dearly in round 1.

MILLICENT

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red Welcome back to Island Park Cat fans, and for the first time since 2019 welcome back to the winners list Senior Cats. What an awesome display last week at West, and just reward for effort by Kane Forbes' men. First gamers Fletcher Bright, Jack Thompson, Ed Pritchard, Cody Ireland and Jesse Walker Gould and the return of Alister Bright and Billy Galpin to the side gave the Cats a new look but at the same time looked like a team that had been together for several seasons, such was the cohesiveness of their play. Hamish McCrae looks bigger, stronger and was dominant in the ruck and his tackling was reminisent of his father's, bringing down Roos left, right and centre, Diarmid Cleary is again set for a big season as is “Prez” Dylan Ayton who looked to enjoy the freedom of the Wing. The Killey boys, Rick and Matt, read the play better than anyone and combined for many marks with Rick kicking 3 majors. The Young Guns of the club are another year older, Adam McKinnon, Zac Nash, Tom Foster, Nic Schembri and Corey Wombwell giving 100% for the 4 quarters. To top things off the Cats smiling assassins Gabe Parsons and Dylan Ryan were both able to come off the park with huge grins knowing they had demolished a young and determined West outfit. The Under 14's got in their first win for the year and are coming off a solid season last year and are looking to take the next step, Kirby Vise led the way wracking up plenty of possessions, Samuel Patton and Archie Lane, made the going difficult for their Roo opponents while Connor Stephens and Jedd Rhook provided the sauce kicking 2 goals each. Thanks for the cold beverages and the chips and gravy, West Gambier, you're the bench mark in Mount Gambier for hosting the opposition, keep up the good work. Aftyer the game the presentations were at the Golf

Club, a good turn out was expected after the win and the cats supporters did not disappoint, a great roll up and some good banter was had. Twenty odd brave souls had a crack at the night golf and all though there was no winner recorded I was advised that everyone who had a hit was of a professional standard and if Tiger or the Shark had turned up they would have been forced to Caddy for the Cats.

This weekend we welcome the Saints to Island Park, Millicent always have a good crack so we supporters are going to have to make sure we get behind our Cats Netballers and Footballers and show our appreciation for their efforts. After the game the club will have presentations and meals and kicking off at 8:30 PM we have music from Suburban Henry and a Dress in your best to your waist & the rest bad taste, take from that what you will but myself and Scott Lane would attend Semi Formal events in the late 90's Tux up top and Boxers down below, it's taken 25 years for our trend to catch on but better late than never! It’s fantastic that the season has started. The clubrooms were abuzz last Thursday night with anticipation. The Club warmly welcomes our new players and their players and we are all pondering the new opportunities with the commencement of the new season. The refurbished bar, storage and dance floor area create a fresher ambience. Such a splendid backdrop, coupled with a $15 Schnitta, where else would you rather be on a Thursday night during football season. Credit due to the organisers and workers for the renovations.

The Seniors were up against their 2021 Grand Final opponent, who took the 4 points with them. We welcomed back Tom Hutchesson and Dylan Bromley, new tall Sam “Fish” Waring and promoted Colby O’Connor, Harry Willis, Kalan Shanks, Jed Haines, Reserves Captain Luke Ferguson and Craig Gysbers into the team from 2021’s Big Dance. The boys fell short on the scoreboard but would learn plenty from the 25 point margin. Keeping the old adages alive in football, “It’s not where you start, but where you finish.”

Millicent Red, Black & White Cushion, Austin Fuller, Jack O’Leary and Alex Wesolowski. For the U16’s Campbell Hateley was the sole goal kicker and best players were Harry Gibbs, Will Wilson, Charlie Damhuis, Max Hunt and Jackson Dean. The Under 14’s started off strongly but were unable to convert their opportunities and were over run by a strong South side. Ryder Lindner and Adam Smith each kicked a goal and best players were Teej Lawlor, Ryder Lindner, Will Jennings, Curtis Shanks, Sam Gronn and Mitchell Tarrant. The 12A’s put in a great effort to lead most of the game only to be overrun by South in the last quarter. Thanks to some of the 12C’s for filling in. After a long pre-season it was great to be back playing for p o i n t s . We t r a v e l l e d t o McLaughlin Park to play Millicent who are always great hosts. We’ve built quite a rivalry with MFNC over the past few years and it looks as if that will continue into the future. We have a lot of respect for Joel and his team and were fortunate to get the points in the football grades this time (not so fortunate in netball). The U14 boys started with a 23 point win followed by the U16 team with a 61 point victory. The U18 team had a hard fought game and came away 17 point victors. Nelson Forbes highlighted his improvement with a classy game at half forward, Lochlan Thiele was impassable at half back, Ethan Sims, skipper Jordan Stephens, Nick Wilke and Harry Fisher all played well.

against the breeze, going into half time in front by 22 points. It was goal for goal from then on in a high standard game before South ran out 25 point winners. Scoring shots were the same which is an indicator of the closeness of the game. Coach Kain was the best forward with 4 goals, goal sneak Mitch Sims got 3 and Liam Delaney was excellent on debut with 2 goals. Taylor Saffin loves this ground and was BOG 2 years in a row. It is fa n t a s t i c t o h av e J a m e s Paprotny back in red and white and he showed why we were s o ke e n t o h a v e w i t h a d o m i n a nt d i s p l ay. B ro c k Keding showed the benefit of a great off-season, he really loves a contest. Youngsters Liam Delaney and Ryan Kuhl made their debuts and both were outstanding, they will both play many games of senior football in future. Noah Sims took on the best in the league in the middle and acquitted himself well. Our other recruits Ben Milstead, Hamish Stephens and Josh Woodall all played well in a strong team performance. While it was a nice win there is a lot of improvement required if we’re to achieve our goals.

The reserves continued their 2021 form against last season’s grand final opponents. A 132 point win shows this team is continuing to improve and hasn’t peaked yet. Rob Hein, Luke Gray and Nick Seager all worked hard, great to see Harrison McBain excel in his first senior game, Emerson Marks and Oli Thompson This week we take on our enhanced their push for senior traditional rivals from the kennel. For what I was told the game was played in great spirit the coaches even agreed to a shorten last quarter.

Well if round 1 was anything to go by its going to be a very complicated year. With covid and close contact rules, each week is going to be a challenge.

This week we play the bench mark of the league who have had a big off season recruiting and in round 1 had a strong win against the reigning premiers, its going to be a tough day but in this covid world at the moment anything can happen. Good luck to all teams, buy a drink a bucket of chips or steak sandwich and support our cross town rivals. Woof woof

North Gambier Yellow & Black After a fair bit of discussion during the week between the two presidents, it was a credit to both clubs to put on a full days football due to unavailability, Covid/protocols and injuries. Neither club could afford to hand out jumpers for all the new players, some of which we may never see again. Thanks to all on both sides that help out through the day, on and off the field. After getting coach Hardy out of covid protocols on Friday I am sure his pre-season team looked different to what we ended up putting on the park, including the shortest retirement since John Farnham, by Declan Kenny. Congratulations to debutants, Dale Bachmann, Mitch Kelton, Cam Ortlepp & Jacob Arthurson and 2nd gamer Brodie Allen who lasted a lot longer than his 1st game last year and was very happy with his goal. With both teams missing some of their best 22, as expected it was a hard fought game, with East’s injuries having a bearing on our positive result. Despite playing more than 150 games it was the first time our ex coach was named best, with best players being Justin McConnell, Sam Stafford, Tim McInerney, Nick McInerney, Jordan Hollitt & Joel Griffith. Our reserves coach Youngy has quickly found out about why this job is one of the hardest in football. It is a credit to him to get a team on the park, which ended up being a bit of an all club effort and included some guys that were lucky? enough to be in town for the races. We had plenty of experience with a sprinkling of youth. Ciaran Buckley (4 goals and who has now played more games than trained in 2022), Mitch Harris, Matthew Chapman (6g) Ethan Norman & Danny Poyner were best players.

With plenty of discussion during the week whether we could put a team on the table in the U18's, coach Bryan and the boys themselves gathered a talented squad. The senior coach was very excited to see the future of the club on show during this game and we ran out convincing winners.

Best players were named as Reece McLaughlin (5g), Aaron Dally, Joel Griffith, Brodie Allen, Jamie Williamson and Jay Turner. With coach Shepherdson down with Covid, Peter Allen and Ryan Roulstone took over coaching duties for the U16's. After getting off to a quick start, East gradually took over and despite their best efforts in the last quarter, the boys just fell short. Best players were Darcy Arthurson, Brodie Anderson, Josh Glidden, Aaron Dally and Zac Cordell. The under 14's got off to a rough start but coach Baron was nothing but positive after the game. These guys & girls have a h u ge u p s i d e a n d we l o o k forward to seeing their improvements throughout the season. Best players were named as Sam Baron, James Flett, Jackson Driver & Sam Crispino. Today we host West with the Tom Hall trophy up for grabs. For those that don’t know this trophy is played for the first time each season that North and West play at Vansittart Park, with b o t h c l u b s h av i n g s h a re d Vansittart Park until West moved to Malseed Park. This explains SOME of the rivalry between the two clubs and makes me wonder how it worked then, as I can’t see how it would work now.

Rosters are out, so please help out. We did have a couple of injuries, but I’m told Patty made a Memberships are due, so please r e m a r k a b l e r e c o v e r y o n renew. Saturday night. North Gambier Yellow & Black Under 12E What a great start to the 2022 season with North Gambier U12 E’s having an opportunity to play East Gambier at McDonald Park. Speedster Oliver Liddle was displaying magic on the field with his twisting and turning, whilst the likes of Flynn Buckley found himself in the elite category of ‘first kick first goal’ to the season. North Gambier players illustrated their passion of ‘want’ and kept the ball moving in any direction possible. With Eden Stephenson’s courage and Xavier Wurst’s elite kicking, it was a great day seeing smiles all round. Under 12D Welcome back all returning players and new players to the club for season 2022. I have once again been asked to coach the U12D’s for the upcoming season, a role which I feel honoured to do. The U12D’s are a team made up of few numbers, but what we lack in numbers we more than make up with enthusiasm and skill. It's an exciting time of the year with the weeks of training behind us and the first game for the year being played, to kick off this season we came up against East Gambier on a perfect day for football. The boys were all fired up and couldn’t be held back, from the first whistle they were super enthusiastic, and all wanted to get a touch of the football. It was exciting to watch them take what we had been practicing at training and put into a game situation. A special mention goes to the following boys who stood out on the day. Rylee Judd, Ryder Sealey, Harry Lucas and Will. It was hard to separate these boys out of a team that played so well together, and all of the boys contributed to a great game. They should all feel really proud of their efforts. I am looking forward to the year ahead, as should all the parents, as we have a fantastic group of boys. I am looking forward to seeing you all this weekend, when we take on West Gambier at home on Sunday. Go Tiges!! Coach: Danny Vinko

Under 12C After a month or so of training and a few new faces in the team Round one was here and had us taking on East Gambier at MacDonald park, there was a lot of excitement with the kids all keen to get the season underway. After a slow scrappy first quarter from both sides our kids hit the ground running in the second quarter and showed what they’re capable of playing some excellent football and playing very well as a team. It was fantastic to watch! The last two quarters were played in the same fashion with some great passages of play and more great teamwork on display with all players getting involved and contributing in a great team effort. Goal kickers on the day were Levi Hunter, Kobe Hamilton, Maison Roscow, Jarrah Durbridge, Lakyn Corcoran and Able McIntosh. Player awards went to Claire Flett, Jenny Bigirimana, Able McIntosh and Lakyn Corcoran. Thanks to East Gambier for a good hitout first up and bring on West this week, Go Tigers! Coaches: Stacey Mullens & Michael Durbidge, Team Manager: Anthony Davison Under 12B Welcome back everyone. Firstly I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the entire Norman family over the passing of Will late last year. It's great to have footy back and can possibly say I'm not sure who was more excited the kids or me.. So round 1 saw the tigers travel down the road to the old foes at the kennel. In perfect conditions for football we saw a fantastic game of football played in amazing spirit. Our lads were ferocious at the football and took control early and played exceptional team football. With many passages of play where east didn't touch the football. Best players for the day, which to be honest could have been any of them, were Ronnie Coleman, Thomas Norman, Jacob cox and Riley Chapman. Coach: John Stafford & Team Manager: Scott 'monty' Montgomery

MATCH REPORTS MILLICENT V SOUTH GAMBIER South Gambier entered the round one clash with Millicent missing two key talls and having to u lise a ra of players backing up for their second game of the day as the Demons became the first club to have significant numbers across all senior and junior grades unavailable due to COVID. In contrast to the unse led South line-up, the Saints looked as well drilled as ever, with six of the 2021 grand final line-up on court and newcomer Georgia Clarke slo ng in nicely on the defensive wing. The shoo ng combina on of Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena were on fire from the first whistle, ne ng 25 from 28 as the slick ball movement of the Saints via the mid court of Paige Nitschke and Lisa Duldig gave the Demons hard working defenders, Mykaela Thiele and Ruby Richter, who was celebra ng her 150th appearance for the club, li le chance to deny the Millicent shooters plenty of scoring opportuni es. The deficit was 17 at the first break and it blew out to 26 by the half as both teams made changes. For the Demons, Charlene Riley made her A Grade debut, as one of the doubling up players for South and took on the daun ng task of denying Sanderson the ball, while Richter moved into the centre and Thiele ventured out to goal defence. For the Saints, Daisy Tunkin took the centre bib, bringing fresh legs to the role as the Saints con nued to score at will, pu ng another 24 goals on the board for the quarter. And not only was Sanderson shoo ng with her usual accuracy but Verbena shot eight from eight in the first, second and last quarters, missing only one a empt for the game when she ne ed seven from eight in the third. At the other end of the court, the Saints defenders were also making life tough for the South a ack line which was well led by Alyssa Duncan, whose combina on with Lara Munro showed promise against the ght checking of Por a McRae and Hannah Nitschke. But in the end, weight of supply, and the clinical and quick ball movement of the Saints was overwhelming and they powered to a 52 goal victory.

WEST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD West Gambier is looking to break its premiership drought and its 2022 campaign started in style with a 53 goal victory over Casterton Sandford, who were missing some of their key players and will be keen to have a full squad to choose from, sooner rather than later. West unveiled a new look mid court with young guns Zoe Malseed and Mikaela Horrigan joining Tara Bryant, ensuring there was plenty of speed and athle cism through the centre of the court. And the speed of ball and sure hands on the feed meant West goalers Sarah Ri er and Lisa McGregor had plenty of supply, with the star shoo ng duo, not unsurprisingly, being named West’s best. Rigger ne ed 16 from 18 in the opening quarter, 24 from 27 in a huge second quarter and 15 from 20 in the third, before Claire Hunter entered the game at shooter and didn’t miss a beat with 11 from 12. Hunter will be the Roos replacement shooter when Ri er is away on State du es and it was a great way to introduce the talented goaler to the A Grade court. It was a tough day out for the Cats, with so many first choice players missing, and the Roos defenders, Amy Cram and Jade Ri er, denied the makeshi Casterton Sandford forward set up me and space and any chance to se le, keeping them to limited scoring opportuni es. Scarle Jarrad was easily the Cats best as she con nued her hard running through the centre as well as showing great leadership for her younger team mates, while Charlo e Rice made good space in the shoo ng circle. New coach Jodie Humphries swung the changes throughout the match to try and find the right mix and she would certainly have been pleased with the effort of her new look round one team. EAST GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER The Bulldogs premiership defence got off to a shaky start as North Gambier showed despite losing a number of key players in the off season, they intend to be contenders again in 2022.

DENTON’S

The return of Ash Kalantarian provided some wonderful experience and skill to the a acking end of the court, while Libby Morgan’s eleva on to the top grade on the defensive wing also added tenacity and speed to the defensive end of the court. New defender Zahra Crough teamed up well with captain Mel Renko, who returned to circle defence a er a few seasons in the mid court, and got plenty of touches and created turnover ball to ensure North had enough possession to post a winning score. Teenage goaler Macey Gri h also had a strong debut in A Grade company, ne ng 17 out of 21 and feeding her experienced shoo ng partner Caroline Wakefield (Davey) with precision as the star shooter put in a best on court performance as she converted 42 from 45 in a now expected quality performances. East not only started life without premiership players Tenille Gray and Lisa Fyfe but had Bo Creek and Tyne Bosko unavailable as well and were forced into using some players who had already played A Reserve. Returning East defender Morgan Amy started at goal defence and then at half me went back to resume her many ba les with Wakefield to try and quell the Tigers spearhead, while at the other end it will no doubt take me for Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko to find their mojo as a shoo ng combina on. Emily Hunter was again impressive through the middle and her ba le with Brianna Walters was one of the match ups of the day as the two hard running centres got the job done both offensively and applying defensive pressure. North’s strong start which saw them seven goals clear at quarter me, courtesy of a stunning opening quarter of shoo ng from Griffith and Wakefield, and the Tigers went on to win every quarter. It was 10 goals at the main break, 13 at three quarter me and then a final margin of 15 as North enjoyed a confident start to the 2022 season and East will head back to the training court and also look to welcome back their missing defenders.

ROUND PREVIEWS CASTERTON SANDFORD v MILLICENT It doesn’t get any easier for Casterton Sandford this weekend when they host 2021 runners up Millicent at Island Park. T h e S a i nt s l o o ke d s l i c k i n t h e i r comprehensive win over South Gambier in the opening round with their trademark ball movement and relentless defence on show. Por a McRae and Hannah Nitschke con nue to be a strong defensive combina on, and new face Georgia Clarke applied typical Saints pressure on the defensive wing, while at the other end of the court Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena showed their chemistry as a shoo ng duo has done nothing if not improve and with the likes of Lisa Duldig, Daisy Tunkin and Paige Nitschke delivering the ball, it will be a tough day out for the Cats defenders. The biggest challenge for the Cats in the early going of 2022 is player unavailability and as they look to built a new look A Grade line-up, it is going to take me. Scarle Jarrad is the lynchpin of the team in centre and Charlo e Rice looms as a great target for the Cats offensive line with her well med moves and strength on the hold. At the other end, new recruit Tessa Marra will quickly find her feet in the Western Border compe on and along with the likes of hard working junior Ebany Jarrad, will have their work cut out as they take on Sanderson and Verbena, who are the equal of the West line-up the Cats defenders took on in round one. Makayla Hutchins brings speed to the mid court and Gaby Tomkins will be be er for the run a er a season on the sidelines, while Caeleigh Humphries is the X factor, who can be called on to fill any spot on court, depending on player

availability. NORTH GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER Looms as the match of the round as the new look Tigers take on a se led West Gambier line-up in the ba le to go two zip in 2022. The shoo ng combina ons of both teams are strong and will do serious scoreboard damage if the defenders are not at the top of their game. North’s Caroline Wakefield has been a regular team of the year member for many seasons and her new combina on with teenager Macey Griffith looked seamless in round one and Griffith was happy to take the shots and not just feed her more experienced shoo ng partner. For West, Sarah Ri er con nues to loom as a serious threat, not just under the post but from long range, while the smarts of Lisa McGregor ensures the West a acking end runs like a well oiled machine and she is an accurate finisher herself. McGregor’s ba le with Mel Renko will be arguably the most pivotal of the match and while Renko will make McGregor earn every possession, McGregor herself will have to turn defender without the ball as Renko is a key link player through the mid court. The other key match up is Brianna Walters and Tara Bryant in the centre. Both have speed to burn and both are safe with ball in hand, and watching the two hard runners work up and down the court for 60 minutes will be a treat for spectators. On paper a high scoring affair would be expected given the quality of the two shoo ng combina ons and in what should be a ght scoreline, the Roos should remain undefeated.

SOUTH GAMBIER v EAST GAMBIER East Gambier will be looking to get its premiership defence back on track as the Bulldogs head to Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend. The return of premiership players Bo C re e k a n d Ty n e B o s ko c e r ta i n l y strengthens the East defensive line, while Sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko will only improve as a shoo ng combina on as the weeks go on. Any team with Tarsh McCallum, Emily Hunter and Kate Dempsey running through the mid court will provide plenty of quality ball to their shooters and if South cannot slow the Bulldogs ball movement it will be a long day in the defensive circle. South’s round one shoo ng combina on of Lara Munro and Alyssa Duncan looks set to be a tough one for defensive units to stop with their speed on the drive and good understanding as they play a moving goal circle, while young mid courters Tully McShane and Megan Reid have played a lot of netball with Duncan and Munro, meaning the South frontline should have good chemistry going forward. Ruby Richter showed good form in the mid court as well in round one and could also fill a defensive post if required and she is another of the players who have come through the junior ranks together. Both these sides look like they will take a li le while to se le and find their best form and given the experience and quality of the on court leaders for East, the Bulldogs should get their first win of 2022.

Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red First week back on the courts for the Cats girls, and they couldn’t have been more excited with the c ra c k i n g w e a t h e r a t We s t Gambier. Some of the teams hit the ground running and started the season off with a bang, while others had a few first game nerves to put aside in Round 1. JUNIORS: The Under 11 team played brilliantly, with Isabella & Bridget being key players in passages of play down the court, but despite the effort of all the girls they unfortunately couldn’t come home with the win losing 6-21. A terrific game was seen played by the Under 13B team, with a great bit of teamwork from the girls to win 17-9, with Marlee, Rachel, Phoebe and Georgia, playing outstandingly. We saw many of these players step up into the Under 13A’s but despite their strong presence on the court in the B’s, the West Gambier girls precision & accuracy down the court was unbeatable for our girls and they unfortunately lost 3-70.

SENIORS: Under 17 players Ebony & Makayla fought hard alongside teammates to bring home the first seniors win of the day 49-42 triumphing over the West girls. What a defeat by the C Grade team triumphing West 41-34. The West girls didn’t give up easily, but the Cats girls dug deep, and saw Chantelle & Kim play critical roles throughout the game. B Grade ran away with the win 3829. The passages of play were fantastic & what a way to finish off the game with plays from Madeline, Kerri & Ebony. The girls had spectators on their seats in a nail-biting game as it flicked backwards and forwards between the leading team in the A Reserves. Claire & Sharna in defense worked incredibly well, but despite the attacking efforts of Caeleigh, West ran away with a close win 41-45.

South Gambier Red & White It was a tough way to starts 2022 as it always is when we take on Millicent that has been the benchmark of the competition for so long but then to have players, coaches and umpires d ro p l i ke f l i e s to COV I D a n d associated isolation rules, it really was a tough round one. The club is so grateful for everyone who stepped up and played extra quarters, coached extra games and umpired extra matches so we could make sure we got the job done on Saturday and for the parents and senior players who made sure all the other jobs associated with a round of netball, including scoring, got filled and we were able to focus on what went on, on court. Maelee Dalton was a superstar for making the trek to Millicent to fill the umpiring void, while Larnka took on 13 13 & Under A team as well as her 13 & Under B line-up and was courtside for a match at every other timeslot as well in case anyone needed a hand or some advice. It was also a full on day for Tash, who when she wasn’t coaching – she took on the C Grade and 15 & Under A team as well as her usual role as B Grade coach – was being her usual vocal and encouraging self on the sidelines of the remaining junior matches.

V

defenders coming through our junior ranks and has the premiership and individual silverware to show for her efforts.

So consistent, willing to play any role asked of her by her coach, and with the ability to play a tight checking style of defence as well as come up with the most impressive interceptions courtesy of her ability to read the play, and Ruby has already made her mark at South Gambier. In her first year as a full fledged senior player, Ruby was one of the many players at the weekend who took up the challenge of playing multiple grades so we could get seven out on court for very quarter. Speaking of seven on court, our 11 & Under girls, many who were playing their first game of netball EVER finished out the last quarter and a half of their match with only six players but just did a great job against a much more experienced Millicent line-up.

Ellie McCracken and Zara led the way as the most experience on court for four quarters and they just kept winning the ball back. Best players - Jordan Davis & Matilda Lamb. Award winners – Jordan Davis (25 Acres) & Raine Scott (Bakers Delight). 15 & Under A East 16 lost to North 64 Was a very tough game to start the

Best players – Sharni Clark & Abby Lines. Award winners – Sharni Clark (OK Pie Shop) & Abby Lines (McDonalds). 15 & Under B East 22 lost to North 34 The girls started off guns blazing. With a completely new team, it was great to see the defensive pressure take place down the court. Sharni & Ellie worked the goal circle, creating space and executing shots with the help of Lillie and Mia feeding. Whilst Cedar, Skye and Tahlia held up the defensive end. It was the pressure throughout the mid court which saw quite a few turnovers in our favour. The effort from the tea, was fantastic across 4 quarters, At no point did we give up and I can’t wait to show them what we have next week. Best players – Tahlia Geraghty & Ellie Chittleborough. It was a perfect Autumn day, netball was back and we were pumped! We welcomed the Casterton cats to Malseed Park for round one, and there was a feeling of excitement. Our grounds were looking great, a big thank you to all of our working bee volunteers, and the signage on our fence line looks amazing, thank you to all of our major sponsors! A big happy birthday to our president Kate, who spent her day running around after everyone as always, and snapping some terrific action shots of the girls. Round one saw Sarah Ritter reach her 150 game milestone, congratulations Sarah! Our club would also like to wish Sarah all the very best in her upcoming U19 state netball, what an achievement!

U/11s - The under 11s were out bright and early to start the day in what was some of the girls very first ever game of netball, which is always so exciting! What a great start to our season. Some excellent passages of play resulting in a great win. We played a well controlled game and made the most of the turnovers. Super proud of the girls first game. West 21 - Casterton 6 - Best players Ruby Lamb, Phoebe Bonney-Dawson U/13B - With all new girls in the 13bs coming up from 11s except for one, these girls worked brilliantly as a team. Great start to the game, we kept up with Casterton-Sanford for the first 3/4 and they got away in the last 1/4. Experience, age and height did play a part in the end results. Good work across the court with everybody putting in 100% With lots of potential for an amazing season we are looking forward to an exciting season ahead. Let’s go West!! West 9 - Casterton 17 Best players Ella McKenny, Claire Hunter Game day awards Claire Hunter, Isla Lynch U/13A - We welcomed two new players to West in the 13A team, in Alice and Kara, but all of these girls definitely made it look like they had played together before. It was an exciting feel watching this team and we look forward to getting a few more games under our belt to get a good gauge on where they are at and what areas they need to work on. This was a massive team effort, where all girls put in a solid four quarters. Defence read the ball superbly, making it hard for Casterton to score, and the mid court swiftly moved the ball down, with the accuracy of the goalies finishing off to reward all efforts. West 70 – Casterton 3 Best players Lila Pearson, Swaye Lindner Game day awards Alice Allen, Swaye Lindner U/15B - Saturday saw our under 15b team take the court against Casterton/Sandford for the very first game of the year. Our girls haven’t all played together before but you wouldn’t know it watching them on the court together. We got to welcome Demi Jennings to the West family for her first year of netball and she played a ripper 3 quarters in the mid court doing a stellar job. Our defensive girls had their work cut out for them with Macy & Zarah working cohesively resulting in multiple turn overs gaining West some extra goals. Miley and Holly were paired up in the goals, and together are working on their confidence within their own amazing abilities. The special handshake after each goal was a highlight for spectators. A small injury for Holly saw Ava make the smooth transition from defensive mid-court into the goals for the last quarter, where she added a few to Wests total. Our mid-court team of Demi, Maya and Annabel did a fantastic job where they were always being an option for the pass and gained many turn overs. Casterton gave our girls a great first game where they were able to try out their positions for the season to come, all whilst having some fun. Well done girls, bring on round 2. West 41 – Casterton 26 Best players Miley Vivian, Annabel Judd U/15A - In perfect conditions, our girls got some invaluable court time against a quality opposition. We had some really great passages of play across the court, which is pleasing to see the girls putting into practice what we are doing at training. We wish our Co-coach, Sarah Ritter all the best at U19 State Netball, we are so proud of you! Game day awards: 1st best Ella Jolley - well done to adapting to feedback and your defensive efforts, 2nd best Imogen McGregor - Amazing shooting accuracy and connections with Lucy! West 52 – Casterton 31 Best players Ellie Xanthopoulous, Imogen McGregor Game day awards Ella Jolley, Imogen McGregor

Blue & Red U/17 - Our first game started off with CastertonSandford putting us under pressure straight away. We were down by 9 at ¼ time, which put us on the back foot. Our girls didn’t drop their heads, and to their fantastic efforts we were down by only 2 at half time. Our defence in Maddie Milich and Kirra McKenny worked hard to make their goalies earn every goal. Stevi Clayton played a brilliant game at WD and Centre, her pressure all game was exactly what our team needed. Charlotte Scott, Amity Sheedy and Halle Boult fed the ball well into our goalies. Our court work at times was brilliant but we have a few areas we need work on. Jordy Heraper and Aleisha Pearson worked well together and their accuracy under the ring was great. At the end of the game we went down by 7, the match was very even for the last ¾. I’m sure with the return of Hannah Seidel and a few more games under our belts things will come together for the West Under 17 girls. West 42 – Casterton 49 Best players Jordy Heraper, Stevi Clayton C grade - After welcoming lots of fresh faces to our club this year, our team of 10 started off with lots of team work building and training sessions, consisting of taco nights and group fitness prior to the season commencing. The C grade girls hit the court trialling lots of familiar but also new positions, which saw Karli swapping out her shooting abilities for the opposite end of the court at GK. Karli worked alongside Emily and Madelyn which saw lots of intercepts, rebounds and turnovers throughout the game. With a strong defence followed through a great mid court consisting of Olivia, Alyssa, Bella, and Emma who all brought strong attacking and use of ball skills throughout the game. It was exciting to use the game as an opportunity to put into play all the practice we had done at trainings, and trial lots of position sequences to find what works best for all of us! The three new shooters, Lisa, Mikaela, and Emma all worked so well together, communicating and working the ring to score for our team! The score remained a draw throughout the whole game until the last quarter when the west girls fell through and were defeated 34-41. Amity was the best bench for our team, providing court side feedback and game plays where possible. We look forward to working on our skills to compete against North this week! West 34 – Casterton 41 Best players Karli Earle, Emma Pollock B grade - Saturdays game was a great effort from everyone. The first 3 quarters were pretty close with only 2 goals in it, but we backed off a little bit in the last quarter. With covid, we were faced with multiple key players out, Bianca Jackway stepped up and played GK, with not much experience she nailed it, Ra Hare stepping up and shooting with a close to 85% shooting average which is amazing for someone who doesn’t really play this position. It’s exciting to see what the rest of our season looks like when we have our full side in. We look forward to having everyone back on track this week against North. West 29 - Casterton 38 Best players Bianca Jackway, Maddie Millich A Reserve - It was great to come away with a win for the first game of the season. After a slow start, the girls settled, dug deep, and clawed back Casterton's six goal lead. Rach and Tayla worked hard in defence and turned the ball over to create attacking opportunities. The mid court ran hard all game, with juniors Ellie and Charlotte stepping up when required. Claire and Jasmine overcame some tough opposition, positioning well to score consistently. A hard fought win. Great job team! West 45 – Casterton 41 Best players Jasmine Davey, Bryna Kuller A grade - A solid preseason has paid dividends for the girls with a solid first hit out against an undermanned Casterton side. Lisa and Sarah were impressive in goals, ensuring the defencive efforts of the team were rewarded. Well done to Zoe and Mik for their first outing in the As and also to Claire for hitting the court in the last quarter. Best of luck to Sarah for the next couple of weeks! West 87 – Casterton 24 Best players Lisa McGregor, Sarah Ritter This week we take on North at Vansittart Park, who always provide strong competition, so we are looking forward to hopefully coming away with some good wins. Good luck to all our netball and footy teams today. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE RED AND THE BLUE! GO WEST!!
