PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to the 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football and Netball League
future in the Mount Gambier, Millicent and Casterton Communi es.
The Western Border Football League and The Western Border Netball Associa on has a proud history and we put the disappointment of the 2020 season behind us as we move into the 2021 season with our naming right sponsor B e n d i go B a n k M t G a m b i e r & D i st r i c t Community Bank Branch. I would like to thank them for their con nued support of our league.
Future for our league, associa on and clubs is the main focus for our league board, with valued sponsorship and partnerships being cri cal to this approach. Our strength is in a q u a l i t y co m p e o n a n d p o r t ray i n g a professional image. This is no more truer than this year with our exci ng venture into our line streaming of games which will take WBFL all over the country and the world. It is a great online coaching tool for our senior coaches also to help developed clubs; and also our online Western, replacing the purchase of the budget at the ovals, giving maximum exposure to our wonderful financial partners.
It's with excitement and great apprecia on that our league provides a strong representa on of male and female ac ve par cipants and spectators every week in The Mount Gambier and Millicent and Casterton region in Western Victoria. Clubs are ac vely busy in both Senior and Junior grades recrui ng for a strong season. There is a posi ve and quality commitment from our clubs which gives us confidence. Our league and associa on maintain a strong sustainable
F.L. N e t b a l l Associa on all the very best for their season 2021, as we con nue to work closely together to make this league the very best. Finally thanks to the hard working football and netball boards and clubs. I am very humble and privileged to be president of this Football League. It makes it easy knowing we are all working together for the same reason to con nue a strong quality compe on for many years to come. Michael Summers President, WBFL
I would like to wish our friends from Mid South East League and Kowree Naracoorte Ta ara League all the best for there upcoming season. Thank you also to Jo Gibbs and I wish her and her wonderful team from the Western Border

GAME PREVIEW All eyes are on community spor ng grounds around the Limestone Coast today as the 522-day wait for the return of the Western Border Football League and Netball Associa on is finally over. Although last year's SANFL Limestone Coast Football League gave sports fans some entertainment, there will be happy faces everywhere when football and netball reunite for the beginning of the Bendigo Bank Western Border season. Players across all levels from Under 12's to A Grade will hit the oval and with so much change in the since the final siren of the 2019 Bendigo Bank WBFL grand final at McLaughlin Park, an cipa on is at fever pitch. North Gambier v Casterton Sandford Reigning premier North Gambier strides into the new season with confidence and Jus n McConnell at the helm once again. McConnell was head and shoulders the most dominant forward in 2019, being the only man to get close to the 50-goal barrier, let alone break it. He will play a major role alongside hungry ballwinner and LCFL best and fairest Nick McInerney. Although the Tigers narrowly missed out on the Super League finals, they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with through their me culous approach. McConnell said he could sense the an cipa on for the clash with the Victorians. “We have an enormous amount of respect for Casterton, so we will prepare quite me culously for them,” he said. “There is genuine excitement to have a full day of netball and football at Vansi art Park.” They kick off their campaign at home against a newlook Casterton Sandford. A er being hit hard by border restric ons, the Cats have turned to organic growth in search of a maiden flag in 31 years and there is intrigue as to how they perform a er shaking up their list. Casterton Sandford is the only current club not to win a WBFL premiership in the 21st century, but many local faces will be keen to make a presence. Having fronted the Cats' charge to B Grade success in 2018, Kane Forbes has been awarded the top job. Forbes knows the challenge ahead, but is mainly worrying about his team se ling into a new style. “North is a quality opponent and has been the benchmark for years,” he said.
THOMAS MILES - SE VOICE
“But early on we will focus on our brand and our footy.” He will receive significant support from the dashing Dylan Ayton. Ayton will not only command the forward 50, he also is the president of the compe on's only Victorian club. He will be engaged in a goal-kicking shootout with McConnell and the pair's accuracy will go a long way to deciding the result. East Gambier v West Gambier Two contras ng prepara on methods will go headto-head in what will likely be an arm wrestle between East and West Gambier at McDonald Park. The rivals evenly shared the honours across four close ba les in 2019 and this year's season opener should be no different. The Roos are raring to go having not elected to play last year and have put in more kilometres on the training track than most others over the summer.
F.L. Expect another single-digit thriller to play out. Millicent v South Gambier One more high-stakes match between Millicent and South Gambier completes the round. Since winning the ul mate prize in 2018, the Saints have not sung the club song since and hope a fresh team can bounce back strong a er a year off. The return of Clint Gallio certainly strengthens Millicent's star ng 18, while the impact of his new assistant Tom Renzi cannot be underes mated either. Gallio is taking a simple approach to first bounce. “Round 1 is always a bit of the unknown,” he said. “We will just be controlling what we can and working on what we think are the keys to helping us secure the points.”
Although the side which reached the previous WBFL decider has a new coach in Steven Wenman, fans can expect a similar style as the likes of Lawry Bradley-Brown and Ben Papps look to get back into the groove.
Despite missing finals in the last three Western Border seasons, the Demons could be a flag contender a er a promising Super League campaign. South made it to the decider with Mundulla and is looking to take the final leap this year under the guidance of rookie coach Brayden Kain.
Wenman believes the key to returning a er such a long break is self-analysis. “East is always a hard game,” he said. “But un l you have seen every team play all you can do is focus on yourself, so we head into the season knowing how we want to play.”
In 2020 Kain formed an alliance with Brodie Foster in the forward line and the pair proved deadly to defenders. Expect more of the same as they feast on the Demons' quick entries inside 50 – an area the Saints must target.
The Bulldogs started pre-season a bit later having fought hard in the LCFL.
Kain his aware the threat posed by the 2018 premiers and is expec ng a tough fight.
Silky le -footer Ma Willson welcomes star player Jayden Eldridge in the coach's box and wants to taste success again a er going out in straight sets in the finals over the last two years.
“Millicent will no easy task with Gallio returning to lead his side a er some me away from the Saints and some handy recruits to help them along the way,” he said. “But I'm confident in the players we have on the table to put forward a compe ve side for round 1.”
Riley and Grady Janeway plus Shem and Tully Balshaw will help cover the losses of the Thomson brothers and Kurt Rodis. Eldridge said the calmest side on the big day should steal the chocolates. “I am sure they (West) will come out all guns blazing, but we are going to s ck to our basics and what we have worked on during pre-season,” he said. “Once all the nerves and excitement have se led, it will come down to who is the be er skilled on the day.”
Despite Millicent enjoying the homeground advantage, South's match fitness could be the decisive factor.

West Gambier ROO TALES Its great to have senior Football back this year for West Gambier Football Club. Our Junior grades done the club proud last year with increasing our playing numbers which has followed through with our senior grades this year. Steven Wenman has done a fantas c job over the summer rallying all the troops with a year off been the best medicine for him and a few of the older guys. With Rowan Fox as Wenmos right hand man it adds to the depth of knowledge with both playing in a premiership together. It has been pleasing to see some new faces at the club this year and some really keen kids pushing and training with the seniors. Congratula ons to Nathan Lewis picking up the reserves coaching job, but more importantly marrying his lovely wife Jessica in March. Nathan is keen to get amongst it doing probably the hardest job in country football but is looking forward to working with Wenmo and Foxy this year. Another first me coach this year is Joel Carter. Joel is coaching the 18s with his premiership coach in Keith Ransom helping him and with all the experience and knowledge from them both to guide our kids are in the best hands for 2021. In our Junior Grades we Have Michael Minuzzo Coaching the 16s a er doing a great job developing the same group of kids the year. Aden Pfitzner is coaching the 14s this year with his Assistant being Kyle Giddings. Both Young coaches who play senior football to make it fun while introducing them to new skills and drills. Our Junior Roos with the Under 12s has been lead so well by Kym Hammond and his coaches. They have improved every grade skills and numbers and more importantly all the kids are enjoying the game. With the work of all our Junior coaches and commi ee we are striving to be the best. And finally I want to support all our sponsors and members. Without you all there is no us so thank you again. Good luck to all clubs for the 2021 season and I look forward to seeing you all at the footy. Fridge

MILLICENT
Millicent SAINTLY SAYINGS To all our Players, Families, Valued Supporters, Financial Partners and opponents, Welcome to Season 2021. A er the longest false start to a full season due to Covid, it is exci ng to see the footy and netball return to normal opera ons! What a challenge but one that has been met by everyone at the MFNC, and the wider WBFNL with enthusiasm and op mism… We were fortunate last year in the WBFNL to have enjoyed successfully run junior compe ons which provided enormous development benefits for the league, and we believe this will set us up for sustained success at senior level. Obviously re-engaging playing groups a er a long hiatus has been a hot topic but it has been fabulous to see the peer groups drive efforts to get our playing stocks back up and ready to perform at every level. Solid returning senior talent, combined with focused recrui ng and a large pool of developing junior players in both footy and netball give us a lot to look forward to! Bring it on!!
V
South Gambier DEMON SAYINGS Finally football season is about to start. A er a long pre-season and lots of work on club improvements we are ready to go in all football and netball grades. Brayden Kain is in his first year of coaching and has made a great start. Hopefully with a some new players and improvements from exis ng personnel we'll be able to build on our compe ve efforts in last year's Limestone Coast Football League. Nick Patzel is again reserves coach and Duncan McGregor returns to coach the thirds. Belinda Scanlon is senior netball coach and if her off-season efforts are rewarded her team will improve markedly. Best of luck to all par cipants from all clubs today and for the season. We hope it is injury and incident free for all.
Our off-field efforts have been substan al, with con nued redevelopment within the grounds and club. Some of these are obvious and some not but I would like to thank the commi ee for its con nued focus on this and working to give us all the best facili es possible. Please remember to be Covid safe and adhere to all safe prac ces so we can give ourselves the best chance for a solid and successful 2021. GO SAINTS. Casterton-Sandford CAT TALES A er a very long 18 months, we welcome the return of football and netball with open arms. A mountain of work has been accomplished by so many over this period of me. Thank you to all sponsors, members, volunteers, commi ee people and players and also the greater community that have helped us get our club back up and running for season 2021. There is no doubt that ge ng numbers back both on field and off field has been a challenge, but to the credit of our community, we have been able to get together a strong board, commi ee, and football/netball departments that are going to drive us forward and lead us into the next chapter. Good luck to all those players pulling on the strip or dress today and we know that you will do us all proud. To all our new coaches, we are very excited to have all of you on board and we wish you all the very best of luck. We would like to thank all the support that we have received from both the WBFL Board and also all other clubs. We are proud to be a part of the Western Border and may the footy/netball be a great success for all players and clubs involved this year. We have had our challenges in the last 12 months, and decisions have been made for the future of the CSFNC and now there is no looking back for us. I cannot wait to see the kids running around kicking snags at half me, and all the smiling supporters so happy to be back at the local sport on Saturday! Dylan Ayton

FOOTY JENS HOTEL
Our first footy flashback is with one of North Gambier's finest Sco Fle . A 2 me WBFL medal recipient, 7 me club B&F winner, 3 me premiership player and numerous WBFL Interleague representa ve Sco holds his place in WBFL history with dis nc on. Fle y, our First senior game in the WBFL, A big day for you and the Fle family, how was the lead up and the day? “1994 I was 16 and playing 16's on a Sunday and 18's on Saturday. I remember we played Heywood. I started on the wing, got a few kicks. I think thats what gave me the belief that I should go out and do a pre-season. Prior to that I didnt think I was good enough or strong enough.” A er playing all his junior footy at the Tigers Sco 's first taste of representa ve footy was as a member of the 1995 S.A Teal cup side. (An under 17 compe on consis ng of all states, know replaced with the under 18 state carnival that supplies the majority of AFL dra ees.) He then backed it up with selec on in the following year as well. Fle y, what are your recollec ons of that carnival and is it right that you played at Centre Half Forward while Warren Tredrea was on the wing? “Yeah, that is correct! The formats a lot different to these days. We played 3 games in a week and half and won the grand final. Russell Ebert coached us. Stewart Dew played on wing. Jared Crouch in the middle and a guy by the name of Paul Evans kicked 8 goals in the Grand Final of 95. He was dra ed to Port but wasn't quite big enough. In the 2nd year Tom Harley , Ma Bode & Glen Freeborne all got dra ed. Amazing experience.”
So couple of ones to make you think. You follow sport with a passion. What are the stand out moments in any sport that resonated with you? “Probably Cathy Freemans running the 400m at Sydney Olympics. You could sense the pressure on her. Her race, whole country behind her, the relief on her face when she won. Just a big moment in Australian sport” Your children are all playing sport. What “words of wisdom” do you give them? “Main advice is to have fun. You hope they are doing it to enjoy it and if you do want to do well in the sport you have got to put the work in. If you want to improve you have to get out and train and want to improve.” Your first Premiership came really late in your career, did you think you had missed out? 2012 - I was 34 – there was certainly mes I thought was never going to get one, you keep hanging in there, the last couple of years prior was building and Jus n's culture had started to have impact. No ma er what anyone says, its what you play for” Ok, Couple of fun ques ons. If you could witness 1 piece of History what would it be? “The ancient Olympics for sure. To see what today's games evolved from would be well worth it.”
Then onto Glenelg from there?
You win ckets to any band of any era anywhere. Who is it?
“That's right. Did a full pre-season, got a couple of league games in that year. The next year se led into training but a call from a mate changed my direc on.”
Pearl Jam in the mid 90's.
You were always passionate about footy so what was the alterna ve?.
A li le insight into one of our WBFL legends.
“I had an opportunity to spend 12months in the Caribbean (Cayman Islands) with a mate from the Mount. I wasn't loving footy and decided to go have a look around the world. We were supposed to be back for Christmas so but it was a tough place to leave decided to stay un l March. Great Job. We were teaching tourists scuba diving or driving the ski boat, really tough.”
Thanks Fle y for giving us some of your me.
So back to Mount Gambier & reality in March 2001? “Yes, Dad was coaching and it was me to get back, se le in and set up life in Mount Gambier”
This segment was the sugges on of AZZA from the Jens hotel. Great concept.

EAST GAMBIER v WEST GAMBIER MILLICENT v SOUTH GAMBIER NORTH GAMBIER v CASTERTON SANDFORD
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME The Western Border Netball Associa on is certainly looking forward to the 2021 season and a return to normal transmission with a 16 round season and our seniors back on court. All six of our clubs worked relessly in the off season to ensure they were ready to go for 2021 with hopes high of what we remember as a normal season and their efforts have been rewarded.
the SA Country Championships on the June Long Weekend moving full steam ahead, giving our senior and junior players a chance to represent the associa on, compete at a higher level, and hopefully con nue our proud tradi on at the championships. We enter the 2021 event as defending champions in seniors, 17 & Under and 15 & under.
They have all face challenges, as they do every season, with filling roles and ensuring they have the best possible teams to hit the court and whether through recrui ng or giving young talent the opportunity to play senior netball… things are looking bright for2021.
We have a real focus on off court roles in 2021 as well, with the restric ons of 2020 also not allowing us the opportuni es for the usual coaching and umpiring development and we already have more than 10 umpires looking to be badged in 2021 with those plans well in hand, as well as at least one umpiring mentoring session with Netball SA officials.
All six clubs have nominated teams in all 10 of our grades with the 11 & Under compe on going from strength to strength with all six clubs op ng to play six quarters each week to allow enough court me for the large numbers we are fielding in this entry level grade.
We also be doing everything we can to facilitate coach development as we secure our compe on's future by ensuring we don't just foster playing talent but all the other essen al roles within a netball club, especially umpires and coaches.
We will also see a return to representa ve netball which we are very excited about with
We are also looking forward to con nuing to work closely and coopera vely with the football
l e a g u e a n d encourage our clubs to con nue to foster those rela onships at club level as well – we are definitely stronger together – 2020 proved that with the successful joint junior compe on. I also want to thank all the volunteers that are the lifeblood of our associa on – from scorers, mers and scoreboard a endants to umpires, coaches and team managers and all the myriad of jobs that need to be done to make sure all six clubs and the compe on at large runs smoothly. It is definitely now a case of fingers crossed for an uninterrupted season. Jo Gibbs WBNA President

West Gambier Blue & Red
She was signed as playing coach for the 2020 season and Emily Hunter will be champing at the bit to get her East Gambier team out on court for 2021.
It is a new look Roos line-up for 2021 but it boasts plenty of class and while there are some less experienced players in the senior line-up, they are chock full of talent and will again be contenders.
The value for East of having Hunter in their line-up, taking the centre role, allows them the luxury of playing quality midcourter Tarsh McCallum on the a acking wing, where she has done so much damage with her good speed and ability to work in small spaces, for both East and at representa ve level.
With Lisa McGregor s ll at the helm and controlling the a ack line from goal a ack and 2019 team of the year defender Amy Cram marshalling the troops at the defensive end of the court, the Roos will pose a challenge for allcomers.
The East mid court is round out by Tyne Bosko – a star junior defender, who is basically a veteran of A grade ac on and has become one of the best wing defenders in the compe on. Reigning Western Border best & fairest Tenille Gray will again take the goal a ack bib, combining her East Gambier du es with Premier League du es in Adelaide, combining with young star Amryn Bosko, who has already had a taste of A Grade ac on and has shown she is more that up to the task, with her clever posi oning, accurate finishing and composure. Defensively, the Bulldogs look ominous with Bo Creek back on court, combining with Lisa Fyfe, the 2017 joint Western Border best & fairest, and their athle cism and willingness to contest will see plenty of turnover ball created for the Bulldogs. Junior Kate Dempsey, who finished the 2019 season in the A Grade lineup and Lilah Lamb are the rising talent that could get their opportunity at the Bulldogs, who have lost tenacious defender Morgan Amy to Port MacDonnell.
At the a acking end of the court, West welcomes back Carlee Ransom to the wing a ack role and her long standing connec on with McGregor and her experience in the young Roos line-up will be cri cal. Under the post, Sarah Ri er, who has already shown great form in training matches, will pose a headache for opposi on defenders with her height and accuracy making her a genuine threat. At the other end of the court her sister Jade, is a smart defender, who will improve every week playing alongside Cram and her work over the shot and willingness to chase the intercept will make her dangerous, while Nikiesha Facey will take the wing defender bib, bringing her ght checking, tenacious a tude to the role. Tara Bryant will run the centre and her speed, court smarts and willingness to work both ways will see her prove to be an asset for the Roos mid court. West also has a wealth of teenage talent to inject into the line-up with Emily Dawe, Claire Hunter, Mikaela Horrigan, Zoe Malseed and Jordan Freeman, - some of whom have already experienced A Grade ac on – will have no trouble stepping up. West has lost defender Maddy Teakle and shooter Tahlia Earl to Penola, with Emily Hunter now a Bulldog but have faith in their young talent to fill the void.

The reigning premiers have again had to face player losses but as always, there is some strong young talent ready to fill the void. Coach Donna Denton has re red and Madi Hagge has headed to Mount Burr, where mother Tamara is the head coach, but the core of the premiership line-up remains and the Saints s ll loom as the team to beat. The goal circle will see long range specialists Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke making life difficult for defenders, with Tabatha Sanderson and her ability on the hold at the post also set to cause opposi on defenders some issues. In the mid court they don't come any be er than Lisa Duldig – a mid courter who is as damaging defensively as she is with ball in hand and her combina on with Lucy Denton, Kimmi Tincknell (Varcoe) and Hannah Nitschke, with Paige Nitschke also set for some mid court me, will see the Saints enjoy their usual speed of ball. Tincknell and Hannah Nitschke will also be called upon in the defensive circle alongside class act Hayley Dunn, while Sophie Ellis, who could also pick up a role in the shoo ng circle, is another defensive op on for the talent rich Saints. Por a McRae is a junior on the rise who could also earn some A Grade court me as a defender and at this stage everything points to Millicent being premiership favourites as they gun for a 12th consecu ve tle.
South Gambier Red & White
The Demons have been decimated with player losses, mainly to young talent heading to Adelaide for university, but debut coach Belinda Scanlon, who will also be injec ng her experience and hard running to the mid court, is as creden alled as many coach in the compe on and will ensure her young group con nues to improve and develop.
Brandi Bouchier will hold up the defensive end with her smarts and ability to have an impact in the air and on the ground and her combina on with daughter Ellie, who is a serious emerging talent, Victorian recruit Renee Pluckhahn, who can also play mid court, will ensure South is not an easy team to score against. Scanlon will be joined in the mid court by West recruit Hannah Witherow, who has speed to burn, with Alyssa Duncan no doubt set for me both in the mid court, where she is a smart feeder, and in goals, where she has already shown great promise in 2019. Lara Munro will make her A Grade debut for the Demons – the junior player set to ply her cra in the shoo ng circle where her height and speed will make her a dangerous prospect. Grace Edwards also looms large, whether she takes a defensive role or in the shoo ng circle. She gives the Demons much needed height and experience. With only one player – Alyssa Duncan – remaining from the 2019 A Grade line-up building team chemistry will take a li le me for the Demons.

The dust is yet to se le at North Gambier – the Tigers working as an A/A Reserve squad at this stage. Sarah Nulty has headed to Mount Burr and Ash Kalantarian has re red but there is s ll plenty of experience and talent at coach Karen Gould's disposal. Caroline Davey is back in the Tigers den and her presence in the shoo ng circle already sees North as a tougher prospect in 2021. Add to that the experience of Alisha Bryan, who is a reliable, accurate finisher, and the speed of Alycia Close and Ellen Brown, who can both also fill a mid court role and the Tigers have plenty of shoo ng op ons. The mid court is also full of class with Amanda O'Shaughnessy bringing her work rate and hard running back to the court, with Tenielle Barry also injec ng speed and tenacity into that area. The return of Brianna Walters, who is a composed, smart mid courter, has also boosted the Tigers playing stocks, while Adelaide recruit Lauren Buddle also adds depth to the mid court. Then there is a ra of players who can take a mid court or defensive role and they are all experienced, highly respected campaigners – Mel Renko, Noni McConnell, Phoebe McInerney, Mid South East recruit Libby Howe-Morgan and Jessie Li le. And those girls will get to combine with one of the best defenders Western Border has seen in Madi Whaites with Oakdale recruit Madi Stegmeyer shoring up the defensive end as well.
Casterton-Sandford Blue, White & Red
Injury and pregnancy have decimated the Cats head of the 2021 season but with some quality young talent at Island Park, the club has put together a solid squad that will only improve with every ou ng.
Scarle Jarrad looms large as the leader of the mid court. With the ability to play every role in the mid court, the ght marking, hard running player will also need to use her voice to guide her inexperienced team mates. Leadership will also be required from reliable goaler Tori Broomby (Perry), who will no doubt be the general in the a acking goal third, combining with the speed of Paige Murrell (Cameron) who is a cra y netballer with an accurate finish. They will be backed up in goals by rising star Charlo e Rice, who is developing her game as part of the Victorian talent pathway. Speaking of rising stars, Caeleigh Humphries, who is also part of that talent pathway, will take a defensive role and her athle cism, speed onto the ball and ability to read the play will be cri cal, as will her ability to combine with experience defender Meg Fennell, who is known for her strength in the air and work over the shot. The mid court welcomes back Isobel Cleary and her experience and reliability with ball in hand will be important, while young talent Madison Mutch runs hard all day and has had some senior experience which will hold her in good stead. Claire Foster, who is another junior on the rise, can hold a defensive role and she will get her chance on the defensive wing or in the defensive circle. It is a rebuilding year for the Cats who have lost Madalene Cleary to a season ending knee injury, with Gaby Tomkins, Marlee Gartlan and Chris ne Harris all ed up with du es as new mothers.
