Tradición, ambiente festivo y mucha devoción por San Isidro fueron los ingredientes de las fiestas celebradas en Uga a mediados del pasado mayo en honor a su patrón, festividades que arranca-
ron con un emotivo pregón a cargo del sector camellar en el recién estrenado Centro de Interpretación del Camello que exaltó la figura de este noble animal y su destacado papel en el pasado y presente de la Isla. Vecinos y vecinas disfrutaron de una
semana cargada de actividad y diversión con talleres, juegos, concursos, playbacks y mucha música, recorriendo sus calles empapados del ambiente festivo en la romería y con mayor sobriedad en la procesión, ambas muy participadas.
Carlos Baute puso el broche llenando la carpa de sabor latino, en un concierto que contó también con los artistas locales Alexia, Elieser y Verónica Lucía.
Enthusiastic celebrations in Uga for the San Isidro festivities
The festivities celebrated in Uga last May in honour of its patron saint were all about tradition, festive atmosphere and plenty of devotion to San Isidro. The festivities kicked off with a moving proclamation by the camel sector in the recently opened Camel Visitor Centre, which extolled the figure of this noble animal and its important role in the past and present of the island. Residents were able to enjoy a week
packed with activity and fun with workshops, games, competitions, song miming and plenty of music, walking through the streets, soaking up the festive atmosphere in the pilgrimage and with greater sobriety in the procession, both of which attracted a large number of people.
Carlos Baute brought the event to a close by filling the marquee with Latin flavour, in a concert that also featured local artists Alexia, Elieser and Verónica Lucía.

Muestra de Ganado de Uga
Gran ambiente en la XIV Muestra de Ganado de Uga celebrada del 21 al 23 de abril con la exhibición de 400 animales, con premios a los mejores ejemplares, además de un Encuentro de Ganaderos de Lanzarote y Fuerteventura, un coloquio, talleres lúdicos, catas de quesos, muestras de ordeño tradicional y un sinfín de actividades paralelas.
Uga Cattle Show
It was a very lively atmosphere at the 14th Uga Cattle Show held from 21 to 23 April and featuring an exhibition of 400 animals. There were prizes for the best specimens, as well as a gathering of farmers from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, a seminar, fun workshops, cheese tastings, traditional milking demonstrations and a whole host of other accompanying activities.

Playa Blanca Nursery School opens
Following the transfer of the Playa Blanca nursery to the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Education, the facilities will open for the upcoming school year as a nursery school, offering places for children from 2 to 3 years of age. The municipality of Yaiza is also planning to provide coverage for new-borns in the short term.

The island’s best gamers came together on 22 and 23 April at the 1st Lanzarote Esports Competition, held in Arrecife, where the southern duo ‘Los Magio’ emerged as winners of the League of Legends tournament. Espacio Participativo Joven
Ciento cincuenta estudiantes de 3º de la ESO del IES Yaiza y del CEO Playa Blanca disfrutaron de talleres de fotografía, rap, percusión, grafiti y skate en la Plaza de la Alameda de Yaiza y su entorno como colofón a un nuevo ciclo del Espacio Participativo Joven, iniciativa a través de la cual exponen inquietudes o reivindican y proponen iniciativas como herramienta de ayuda a la convivencia y mejoras de su municipio.

One hundred and fifty students in the 3rd year of secondary education at IES Yaiza and CEO Playa Blanca took part in photography, rap, percussion, graffiti and skateboarding workshops in the Plaza de la Alameda in Yaiza and its surroundings to round off a new cycle of the Espacio Participativo Joven. This represents an initiative through which they express their concerns and propose initiatives as a tool to help them get along with others and improve their municipality.

Great success for Yaiza’s 1st Island Book Fair
The usually peaceful town of Yaiza was suddenly bustling in the last days of April with the constant coming and going of book lovers, curious onlookers and fans of the outstanding local, national and international authors who visited the 1st Island Book Fair, which was held by the association Isla Literaria and which is intended to travel around the different municipalities of Lanzarote in future editions.
The island’s residents took part in the initiative, actively engaging for four days in the extensive schedule of ac-
tivities organised for kids, young people and adults, and taking part in the talks, presentations and book signings of both the most renowned authors, such as Héctor Abad, César Bona, Jesús Cintora and Marta Robles, and local or lesser-known authors, who also proved to have earned a place at the fair with
the quality of their works. Books of a variety of literary styles and genres, and with very different themes, invited locals and tourists to reflect on life, love, art, education, the press and politics, among other subjects.

The Official State Language School arrives in Playa Blanca
The Department of Education has confirmed the opening of a new classroom of the Official School of Languages in the facilities of the CEO Playa Blanca starting from the upcoming academic year. Initially, levels A2 and B1 of English will be taught. There are plans to expand the offer with more levels and languages.

Trail and MTB events at the 4th Yaiza Extremo Sur
Trail y MTB se dan cita en la IV Yaiza Extremo Sur
Unos 500 deportistas tomaron parte el 14 de mayo en las diversas distancias propuestas de trail y MTB de la IV Yaiza Extremo Sur, prueba que discurre por espectaculares paisajes sureños y que contó con versión infantil en la jornada previa.
En la categoría reina triunfaron el vecino de Uga Albi Cedrés y Silvia Caso, en trail 27 km, y Antonio Padrón y Tessa Kortekaas, en los 58 km de MTB. Junto a Albi subieron al podio Santi Castellano y Pedro Juan Díaz y a Silvia le acompañaron Graciela Acosta y Dunia Cruz.
Por su parte Tesssa fue la única participante femenina y Padrón compartió podio con Manuel Pérez y Alexander Hernández.
En la trail de 16 km el cuadro de honor masculino lo formaron Edwin Camacho, Tanausú Cabrera y Jonás Perdomo, y el femenino Oti Suárez, Sheila Falcón y Rosa María Chincoa; mientras que la de 8 km fue para Hugo Pérez, Daniel Casanova y Jacobo Hernández, además de Brenda Morín, Elizabet Perdomo y Basmat Martín, en féminas.
En el circuito de 35 km de MTB, los ganadores fueron Borja Argibay, Kiliam Peraza y Fran Arbelo, en masculino, y Cristina Barrero, Yobana Charlin y Jhuliana Hurtado, en femenino.
Around 500 sportsmen and women took part on 14 May in the various trail and MTB distances on offer at the 4th Yaiza Extremo Sur, an event which runs through breathtaking southern landscapes and which included a children’s version on the previous day.
The winning athletes were Albi Cedrés and Silvia Caso, from Uga, in the 27 km trail race, and Antonio Padrón and Tessa Kortekaas, in the 58 km MTB race. Albi was joined on the podium by Santi Castellano and Pedro Juan Díaz and Silvia was accompanied by Graciela Acosta and Dunia Cruz. Tessa was the sole female participant and Padrón shared the podium with Manuel Pérez and Alexander Hernández.

Yaiza, una fiesta del deporte escolar que este año llevaba el lema ‘Sin límites’ y rendía homenaje al docente y primer director del centro anfitrión José Luis Yagüe Pérez, en el que dos alumnos del instituto sureño, Yerove e Idaira Rodríguez, se proclamaron campeones.
24th IES Yaiza Triathlon
Around 700 athletes, students and teachers from sixteen secondary schools on the island of Lanzarote and one from Fuerteventura, participated in the 24th IES Yaiza Triathlon. The slogan for this celebration of school sport this year was ‘No limits’, paying tribute to the teacher and first headmaster of the host school, José Luis Yagüe Pérez, in which two students from the southern school, Yerove and Idaira Rodríguez, were crowned champions.

The senior team, coached by Francis García, performed excellently in the tournament, leading until the end of the regular phase, only losing one match to their closest rivals, CL Unión Sur Tías, who won the final by 12-10.

Esteban Montenegro y Macarena Rivera, de la Asociación Social Creciendo, disfrutaron de una experiencia inolvidable durante su participación en los ‘Juegos Special Olympics’, celebrados en Granollers (Barcelona), donde lograron mejorar sus propias marcas, Esteban en 25 metros crol y Macarena en 50 metros lisos, obteniendo sendas medallas.
