Restoring a historic building can be a challenge. It is often difficult to know where to begin and who to turn to for assistance and advice. As you plan your project, remember that a historic Nantucket house is a community treasure, with its own history and set of historic elements. No two historic buildings are alike, and the more you preserve and protect, the more authentic, valuable and rewarding your home will be. Here are some tips for restoring your historic Nantucket house. Consider the big picture. Why undertake a restoration project at this time? For many people, the answer is that new mechanicals or kitchen and baths are desired or the house is a new purchase and updating is necessary. As a steward of an island resource you will need to accomplish your goals while protecting and enhancing your home’s historic elements. First learn about your home’s history and architecture. Before you begin the work, learn more about your house. Every house has a story to tell—not just who built it and who owned it over the years, but how the house evolved gradually over time to meet the needs of succeeding owners. Understanding the architectural evolution of the house and its history is key to proper restoration. The Nantucket Preservation Trust can help you learn more with a free “house consultation” – a simple walk-through to point out historic elements and changes. Complete historic research and a chain of title. NPT can assist in this process. Hire an architect and/or contractor who understand(s) your needs and the importance of retaining historic fabric. Communicating your desire to retain the historic feel of your property is essential. A talented and sensitive architect and contractor also can help steer you through a more challenging and interesting effort to preserve your home’s character, while at the same time make needed repairs and improvements. Limit the scope of repairs. Keep original details. Don’t over-restore. Your philosophy toward restoring your home should be like that of a physician: “first, do no harm.” Although some historic elements may need attention, avoid unnecessary repairs and over-finishing. Replace only the portion of elements that are damaged. Replications of molding profiles and other elements will help retain your building’s historic character. Keep old wood as much as possible. New wood will not wear like the original, which is denser and will continue to perform well as long as any rotten sections are repaired. Retain the historic plan and features. The historic layout should be retained whenever possible. New kitchen and baths should be added in areas that cause the least amount of damage to original fabric. Defining elements should be retained and can include transoms (that small band of windowpanes above doorways); paneled doors with old hardware; mantels; ceiling medallions; and moldings around doorways and windows, where walls meet ceilings, picture moldings, and chair rails. Other important Nantucket features such as old mirror boards (moldings or woodwork between windows) also should be retained. Keep the winder staircases, which have served houses on Nantucket for centuries and are beautifully constructed. If new stairs are required, consider adding straight-run stairs in new additions or areas outside the historic core. But be cautious in the removable of wings and other elements; rear ells may be original and are often important to the historic character of the

house and surrounding neighborhood. Keep the plaster walls. In the past, plaster was routinely torn out, even by well-meaning preservationists, to make it easier to install new mechanical systems and wiring. But grouping those components and snaking them through the walls can be accomplished. Plaster is far superior to modern drywall since it isn’t ruined if it gets wet. It also provides excellent soundproofing and can be patch-repaired. Take special care with your wood floors. Many people correctly want to retain the old floors in a historic house, but there is a right way—and a wrong way—to deal with them. Old flooring is often over-sanded, reducing the floor’s life span and at the same time destroying its antique character. Old floors were hand-planed, and gentle hand-sanding or chemical removable of paint and finishes is the best way to protect them. Simple cleaning and waxing will retain the old patina, too. Maintain the quirks. Straighten that crooked window or doorway? Not necessarily. Treasure the things that show evidence of how your house evolved over the generations. Your house will be more charming and authentic as a result. It is possible to make structural repairs and still keep those elements that give the house a real Nantucket sense of place. Restore—don’t replace—historic windows. Windows are key elements of old houses. Old windows were made to be repaired, not replaced. Unlike today’s windows almost all pre-1940 window frames were built of high-quality, dense wood in easy-to-assemble parts. Maintenance of old windows generally involves keeping them painted and in good working order. Old windows can easily be made energy efficient by adding sensitive storm windows and weather stripping. Keep in mind that, unlike original windows, replacement windows will need to be replaced. Take special care in repairing masonry. Portland cement is usually not compatible with historic brick, and its use can lead to structural damage and moisture problems that can spread to other areas. Of particular concern on Nantucket are chimneys that have been lined or repointed with cement. The weight of cement can bring down an old chimney and lead to very costly repairs. Repointing mortar with the correct lime mortar is essential and should not increase the expense. Hire a mason who understands the importance of matching the mortar to the old brick. Build new wings “with Nantucket in mind.” Design any new addition so it is fully compatible with the main core and does not overwhelm it. Oversized additions can negatively affect the streetscape. Read Building With Nantucket in Mind, the architectural design guidelines produced by the Nantucket Historic District Commission. Complete maintenance on a regular basis. Routine maintenance, such as proper paint preparation, will help minimize rot and the need for costly repairs. Maintenance on Nantucket is especially important because of the sea air and damp winters. Address suspected water problems or other issues early to minimize damage. Nantucket Preservation Trust was founded in 1997 with a mission to protect the island’s historic sense of place. Their work focuses on the built environment, including the island’s irreplaceable historic architecture, streetscapes, and gardens. Michael May has served as the organization’s executive director since 2006. For more about the NPT, visit nantucketpreservation.org or stop by their office on the 3rd floor at 55 Main Street.

Did you ever spend a pleasant summer day just walking around Nantucket admiring window boxes? There aren’t many other places where you can do just that. We are fortunate that our climate lends itself so beautifully to growing flowers, and the culture of the island practically dictates that we adorn our homes with them. Homeowners with little or no yard can still embrace gardening by giving a bit of window dressing to the outside of their homes. Flowering window boxes are far more prominent in summer than during the off-season, but many homeowners embrace their beauty all year-round. Window boxes can reflect the character of the house or the neighborhood or the personality and preferences of the person planting. They add personality to the house, and they certainly offer a good deal of curb appeal. Creative skills come in handy but are not a requirement for planning and planting window boxes. You need to know what you like in terms of color. You also need to know how much sun, shade, and wind your boxes will get. If you’ve never planted and maintained window boxes, be aware right up front that most of them do require maintenance, though the amount will vary by which plants you choose. Even more important is the fact that all of them need water. All of them. The number one reason that window boxes fail to thrive is lack of water. Plants in window boxes dry out much faster than plants in the ground. It’s not enough to moisten the top of the soil when the box is dry. Water thoroughly until it runs out the holes in the bottom. There is very little danger of overwatering window boxes. That being said, be sure your window boxes have good drainage (holes in the bottom) and are protected from excess roof runoff—if they are not protected, they will get smashed during a heavy rain. The type of box you choose doesn’t matter so much as the plants you select and the care you give them through the growing season. Use fresh, rich potting soil each year, and add time-release fertilizer according to package directions at planting time, then feed with a liquid fertilizer at half-strength every week or so beginning about a month after planting. Knowing the exposure of your window boxes will go a long way in ensuring success with your boxes. If you have a full southern exposure, be sure to choose plants that are labeled “Full Sun.” Even with our ever-present sea breezes, there can be punishing heat in a southern exposure. Putting shade plants in those conditions is asking for trouble. Full sun plants will require more watering as well. The definitions and verbiage used on plant labels can be a little fuzzy, so you should consider them more like guidelines. A plant labeled “Full Sun” will be most suited to tolerate a southern exposure. If you have a spot that gets at least six hours of full sun daily, choose a plant labeled that way. “Partial sun” and “partial shade” are often used interchangeably. A plant labeled like this needs 3-6 hours of direct sun per day; however, being shaded in the morning is not the same as being shaded from the scorching afternoon sun. “Partial sun” usually implies that the plant needs more sun and is more heat tolerant. “Partial shade” implies that the plant should be protected from the sun during the afternoon. “Shade” plants like to live the north side of a house or on a covered porch. Dappled shade, like under a tree, is a great place for “partial shade” plants. More plants

tolerate dappled shade than can live in really deep shade. It’s important to keep track of light levels from spring through fall, as an area that is dappled sun in April may be full shade in July. Regardless of a plant’s label, the amount of sun it needs or will tolerate varies with the strength of the sun and on how much you water. So let’s talk about choosing plants. Several years ago, some marketer came up with a catch phrase about how to do this…use Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers they said. And it stuck. The concept is sound so if you need inspiration, think about planting with this method. Thrillers are the stars: the big, attention-getting plants. They are usually tall and upright with some outstanding quality like bright colors or textured foliage, an interesting shape or striking flowers. An important element of the thriller is that it remain interesting all season long. Thrillers work best in window boxes where they are the tallest plant. I also consider the thriller to be the starting point in a design. In a window box, the thriller goes either in the center or along the back, and the other elements are built around it. Consider grasses like Hakone, about a foot tall, with yellowand green-striped blades, or purple fountain grass or papyrus. Flowering annuals like Angelonia, Dahlias, New Guinea Impatiens, Salvias, and Gaura all work well. Fillers add mass and get planted right in front of or directly to the sides of the thriller. You may want to use more finely textured plants that surround and can weave through the thriller. Fillers, well, fill in the composition. Choose a plant with a different texture or a complementing color as a counterpoint. Or if you are planting a monochrome box (all one color) try using a plant with blooms of continued on page 26

the same color, but are less saturated than the thriller. Fillers usually are mounding and that helps them fill in empty spots. Side benefit…if you have a tall thriller that loses leaves at the bottom of the stem, the filler covers that up! The main role of a spiller is to trail over the edge of the window box. You may choose to have several across the width of the box or just have one in the middle, or you could put one at each end. This can be an effective look if the boxes are not displayed end to end. Spillers soften the edges and sometimes look like a waterfall flowing towards the ground. Some great choices of spillers are Bacopa, Lobularia, trailing Verbena, perennial Lamium, and potato vine. It should be noted that certain plants can fall into either the thriller or spiller category, depending on what they are planted with. In addition to color and exposure, it’s helpful to consider some general design elements like simplicity, balance, height of boxes, repetition, color, and style before you begin. If you have a lot of windows, and want a box on every window, keep it simple. If there are too many textures or colors going on and there are eight boxes on two floors, the appearance will seem jumbled. With multiple boxes, try to stick to a maximum of three types of plants. If you are planting boxes on the upper level of your house, it will need to look bigger. Fine foliage and airy flowers like those on Euphorbia are great up close, but the effect will be lost if you put them way up on the second floor. Boldly colored petunias or Divine impatiens may be a bet-

ter choice when viewing your boxes from a distance. Are you a fan of the traditional look? In the sun you can’t go wrong with geraniums, petunias, and ivy or vinca. Those are simple, easy to care for, and will bloom all summer. If you like more of a contemporary look, think about using just one type of plant, like a short grass or all petunias or choose all plants that grow to the same height. Straight lines give a clean look. Symmetry is important no matter what style you are going for. A large clump of color will look great at one end of your deck or in the corner of a patio, but a window box planted like that will look lop-sided. Repetition in a conversation is tiresome but in a cluster of window boxes it is necessary! If you are planting two or three boxes on the same level, they should be planted alike. If it is one very long box it should be symmetrical, end-to-end. Knowing how much effort you are willing to put forth in maintaining boxes will also help you decide what to plant. Many varieties introduced lately are self-cleaning — that is, they drop their blooms that have gone by and replace them with fresh blooms on a constant basis. Water, fertilizer, and the occasional trim are all that are required. If you have some boxes in the shade, foliage is often a good choice along with a shade-loving flowering annual. My alltime favorite shade box is colorful tuberous begonias (they come in lots of colors) mixed with Japanese Painted Fern and Spider Plant. It blooms all summer, the foliage has two different textures, and they all require virtually zero maintenance. If you want a very low-maintenance box for a full continued on page 28

sun spot, try using all succulents like Sempervivums, Sedums, and Escheverias. All kinds of textures, heights, shapes, and colors are available in garden centers, and they are becoming more popular as container and window box p l a n t s . They mix just like annuals, and they often bloom with interesting spikes of long-lasting flowers. S o m e spread, some hang, and some stand up tall. of greatest value when considering the use of succulents is their drought tolerance. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this means they don’t need water, though. While succulent’s foliage is adapted to hold water during water stress situations, this advantage will only help for a while. They do need water, but perhaps only half as much as flowering annuals. Succulents will often throw interesting stalks of flowers as the season goes on, and when the nights begin to get cooler, their colors will deepen and get even more interesting. Deciding how many plants to put in each window box will depend on a couple things. If you are late to the game and are planting in June or July, you’ll want to stuff it full so it looks filled in immediately. If you plan ahead and plant in May, you may be able to get away with using fewer plants. They will fill in over time. Also read the labels on each plant. The information is there so you know how wide the plant will grow. Will it spread? Does it grow upright? The physical attributes of each plant will help you figure out how many plants you will need. Garden center staff always have great planting tips too. One of the great things about planting window boxes is that you can experiment a little each year. You may find some combination that you want to plant every year, but more than likely you will want to try out some new varieties. Plant breeders are constantly improving old varieties so they bloom longer or better, and coming up with new ones to try. With a little creative effort and a modest amount of attention and care, you can have stunning window boxes each year.

Festivals to Celebrate Spring

58 nantucket HOME

Spring is a festive time on Nantucket Island, with at least one special three- to five-day event every month during April, May, and June. The fun begins with the annual Nantucket Daffodil Festival, held this year the weekend of April 29, 30, and May 1. Now in its 42nd year, this celebration of spring brings thousands to our island for parades, picnics, live music, a scavenger hunt, art openings, wine tastings, a 5k run, and the magnificent Daffodil Show by the Nantucket Garden Club. What has evolved into three days of events began in 1974, when Jean MacAusland, Nantucket summer resident and then publisher of Gourmet magazine, persuaded the Nantucket Garden Club to invite the American Daffodil Society to sponsor a daffodil show on Nantucket. MacAusland and the Garden Club set a goal to plant more than one million daffodil bulbs. The first planting in the autumn of 1974, took place along Milestone Road. Many of the bulbs planted that first year did not survive because they had been planted in a straight line too close to the road. They were mowed down before the leaves had a chance to store enough food for the winter. The next planting was done in random clusters farther from the roadbed. This “drift planting” protected the plants and gave them a more natural look. Year after year the Garden Club added thousands of bulbs, slowly realizing their goal. In the early 1980s, Jean MacAusland ordered eight tons of bulbs to be shipped here directly from the Netherlands. The Garden Club recruited island landscapers to take over the planting. Using a power drill, they set out 100,000 more daffodil bulbs along Milestone Road. Island residents embraced the idea with enthusiasm. Many began to join in—business people donated materials, and individuals helped with the planting. Everyone who participated in placing the bulbs along Polpis Road set flags over the spots where they had set theirs, so no one would accidently dig up a daffodil while trying to plant another. Across the island, the bulbs have naturalized over the years to well over 3 million daffodils that bloom between early April through May every year. In January of 1978, to add to the festivities of Daffodil Weekend, MacAusland and H. Flint Ranney planned the first parade of classic cars, ending the procession with a tailgate picnic in Siasconset. In that first year, 19 vintage autos participated. Among them were Mike Todd’s 1920 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, Hamilton Heard’s 1924 Graham Brothers Dodge firetruck, Jean MacAusland’s flower-bedecked 1966 Van Dan Plas Rolls Royce, and Ranney’s 1927 American LaFrance ladder truck. This parade now includes up to 80 classic cars and motorcycles. In 1980, the Antique and Classic Car Parade began stopping briefly on Main Street to allow public viewing and photographing. Also that year, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, who has been organizing the festival for more than 20 years, began adding additional downtown events.

Nantucket Home Iss1 49-96 NH16.qxp_Layout 1 copy 3/21/16 3:40 PM Page 59

This year the fun begins on Friday, April 29, with a Daffodil Festival Scavenger Hunt, a window decorating contest, and an evening reception at the Artists Association’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street. On Saturday morning, April 30, people gather at Children’s Beach for the Daffy Hat Parade and the Children’s Parade as the dozens of decorated antique cars arrive in town for viewing on Main Street before the Antique Car Parade at noon. The tailgate picnic in Sconset begins at 1 pm, and for this year’s Daffodil Festival, the Chamber will also hold a Children’s Beach Family Picnic from 1 to 3 pm, which they describe as a “mini-festival,” with live music, storytelling, balloon animals, and free rides for children in the Nantucket Hotel’s antique fire truck. The centerpiece of this spring festival is the Nantucket Garden Club’s Daffodil Flower Show, which opens to the public at 2 pm on Saturday, April 30 at Bartlett’s Farm. Free shuttle busses from town to the show and back will be available on Saturday. Hundreds of staged daffodils in a dizzying array of colors and sizes and varieties will be on display, all of them grown on Nantucket. The artistic theme of the 2016 show is Found on Nantucket, which will be expressed in flower arrangements, tableaux, and photographs. The Daffodil Show continues till 5 pm on Saturday and reopens from 10 am to 4:30 pm on Sunday, May 1. You can end this festive day with a special Daffodil Dinner at the Farm. This four-course, family-style dinner by the farm’s chef will be served at 6pm. Bartlett’s Farm continued on page 60

The Harbor Gala is a Nantucket Wine Festival signature event that brings together local and regional experts in food and wine to offer samplings of their favorites.

Authors Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer signed books & chatted with readers outside Mitchell’s Book Corner on Main Street during the 2015 Nantucket Book Festival. 60 nantucket HOME

Just over two weeks later, on Wednesday, May 18, the 20th Annual Nantucket Wine Festival will open with a gala evening reception for attendees to meet and greet the participating chefs and winemakers. Founded by Denis Toner in 1996 as a one-day event held on the beach in Siasconset, this island festival has grown to include five days of tastings, seminars on food and wine, cooking demonstrations, samplings, wine luncheons and dinners, and parties. Favorite festival events include the Harbor Gala, three sessions of Grand Tastings held Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, and the seminars on Caviar, on Champagne, and on Bordeaux. This year the NWF Great Wines in Grand Houses will include 24 tastings and dinners. For this inimitable series, Wine Fest organizers pair renowned chefs with distinguished winemakers to host small gatherings in elegant and historic private island homes. The locations remain secret to even the guests until just before each GWGH event. Even the final day of the Nantucket Wine Festival is event-filled. Starting at 10 am on Sunday, May 22, four teams of culinary students go head-to-head as they compete for the prize of a $5,000 culinary scholarship in the Junior Top Chef Competition in the festival’s Culinary Tent. The last Grand Tasting is held Sunday morning, and the festival closes with an afternoon celebration featuring live music, beer, craft cocktails, and food. Tickets to Wine Festival events range from $10 to $2,975, and are on sale now at NantucketWineFestival.com. Now in its fifth year, the Nantucket Book Festival is the newest of the island’s spring festivals. This three-day event seeks to create and renew enthusiasm for books, connect authors with readers, and encourage a love of reading and writing. Held this year from June 17 to 19, most of the talks, readings, booksignings, discussions, presentations, and storytimes for children are free. A few ticketed events include an author’s breakfast and a pig roast at Cisco Brewers. The full schedule of events can be found on NantucketBookFestival.org. From 25 to 30 authors and poets will present at this year’s Nantucket Book Festival. At press time, announced authors include: Marlon James (winner of the 2015 Man Booker Prize), Diane Ackerman, Nathaniel Philbrick, Alice Hoffman, Geraldine Brooks, Jack Gantos, Billy Collins, Diane Rehm, Sebastian Junger, Emma Sky, J. Kael Weston, Ann Leary, Anthony Marra, Richard Michelson, Michael Patrick O’Neill, Evan Osnos, and Michael Ruhlman. More authors and poets will be revealed closer to the festival opening date. Several island nightspots offer opportunities to share a cocktail and conversation with authors, and The Typewriter Rodeo, a Texas quartet that travels the country writing custom, on-demand poems, will again be at the festival to write poems on-demand. The Nantucket Book Festival operates under the Nantucket Book Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded to celebrate and promote the joys and

Nantucket Home Iss1 49-96 NH16.qxp_Layout 1 copy 3/21/16 3:40 PM Page 61

rewards of reading, writing, and literacy. The organization seeks to present an annual quality program that honors national, regional and local authors and the rich culture of the written word, ideas, and the imagination. It also administers an education program in the Nantucket schools which includes the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program, the Nantucket Book Festival Young Writers Award, and the Visiting Authors program. These programs encourage students to find a platform of words and a love of reading to understand that while they may live on an island, there is no limit to their imagination. The spotlight turns from books to movies as spring becomes summer and the Nantucket Film Festival opens on Friday, June 17. Twenty-one years ago, Jonathan and Jill Burkhart founded the Nantucket Film Festival to promote awareness and appreciation of screenwriting. This year, for six days from June 22 to 27, screenwriters, actors, producers, agents, and fans will gather on Nantucket to see movies, watch panel discussions, participate in late night storytelling, and attend special screenings. Many popular and award-winning films had early showings at the Nantucket Film Festival, including The Full Monty, Next Stop Wonderland, Mostly Martha, Whale Rider, Winter’s Bone, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Boyhood, and Inside Out. NFF’s In Their Shoes...® sessions provide in-depth and revealing glimpses into the work of major screenwriters, actors, and other film artists during hour-long conversations, and have featured Robin Wright, Glenn Close, Jim Carrey, and Meg Ryan. Another festival favorite is Morning Coffee With…®, which offers chances to hear working tales from the filmmakers’ perspectives. The Nantucket Film Festival was founded by Jill and Jonathan Burkhart in 1996. At the time, the Burkharts lived on the island year-round and felt it was the perfect place to share their love of movies and the island community with a film festival. They distinguished the Nantucket Film Festival by emphasizing the role of screenwriters in film, and every year NFF hosts a Screenwriter Tribute to honor one. Mystelle Brabbée now serves as the Executive Director and continues the NFF mission to promote cultural awareness and appreciation of the art of screenwriting in the world of cinema. In keeping with the Nantucket Film Festival’s mission of highlighting screenwriters, NFF now offers free educational opportunities for Nantucket students. The Teen View on NFF focuses on empowering Nantucket teens by teaching screenwriting and filmmaking skills, with year-round Writing Labs and the week-long Filmmaking Program during the week of the Film Festival, where students present their short film projects to the island community. They also host a competition to recognize the best emerging screenplays and, in collaboration with The Screenwriters Colony, NFF has launched a new writers program featuring an immersive residency with mentors on Nantucket. Tickets to the 2016 Film Festival screenings and events are available at NantucketFilmFestival.org. For up-to-date details on each of these festivals, visit their websites and check the events calendar on Nantucket.net.

Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings and winner of the 2015 Man Booker Prize, will present at this year’s Nantucket Book Festival.

Chris Matthews interviewed Robin Wright and Beau Willimon of House of Cards for this NFF 2015 In Their Shoes...® session.

Nantucket’s Dreamland Theatre has been the venue for many NFF films and events.

For more than sixty years, the Nantucket Garden Club has helped to nurture and cultivate beauty on our island in ways that may surprise many residents. Most know of the Garden Club’s role in the annual Daffodil Festival, and many have attended their Green Thumb Show and their August House Tour. In addition to these fun public events, members of the Nantucket Garden Club have long given hands-on and funding support to nearly every aspect of Nantucket’s natural beauty. Organized in 1953 by 34 dedicated year-round and summer residents who wanted to promote knowledge of and love for gardening, the club has grown to include 125 members today. In 1954, the Nantucket Garden Club became a member of The Garden Club of America, a nationwide organization located in communities in all 50 states. Just two years after they started the club, in 1955, members hosted their first House Tour, welcoming the public into their homes and gardens to raise money for club endeavors. Sixty-two years later, this popular tour continues to offer an opportunity to peek into many historic and new homes and gardens on Nantucket. Each year a different neighborhood is selected...from 'Sconset to Monomoy to Brant Point. Garden Club members provide flower arrangements to compliment the rooms in each home. This year, their House Tour will be held on August 10 from 11 am to 4 pm, rain or shine, and will feature historic homes on Orange Street. The revenue from this major event supports Garden Club community projects that include conservation projects, renewable $5,000 scholarships for local students, club educational programs, and grants to local organizations including the Nantucket Land Council, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Nantucket Lighthouse School, and the Maria Mitchell Association, and many others. In 2004, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a $100,000 package of grants to Nantucket organizations. In 2008, it pledged $50,000 toward the restoration and relocation of the 150 year-old Sankaty Head Lighthouse. And in 2011, it donated $20,000 to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation toward purchase of the 110-acre University of Massachusetts Field Station on Polpis Road, a year-round facility used for education, research, and community service programs on Nantucket. In addition to financial assistance to our island community, the Nantucket Garden Club and its members have taken many steps to keep Nantucket's public places attractive and well-maintained. In the 1960s and 70s, the club established and embellished the early gardens at the Nantucket Airport with trees, planting, and benches. In 1968, the airport received a Federal Aviation Administration award for one of the country's most beautiful airport gardens. Nantucket's Cottage Hospital has received landscaping

help from the club periodically since the 1950s. Most recently, they provided a bench at the hospital's front entrance. Over the years, the club has provided numerous plants and trees to landscape the property of the Atheneum, our historic town library. In the early 1990s, they donated $50,000 to rebuild the Atheneum's adjoining garden following a major renovation of the building. A new master plan for the garden was developed in 2006 with a $3,500 Garden Club donation. The club's relationship with the historic garden at Hadwen House on Main Street is especially cherished. In the mid-1970s, they funded construction of a period 1850s style garden behind the mansion. The club continues to oversee the garden's upkeep and to purchase appropriate plantings for this beautiful site that is open to the public. Nantucket's Oldest House similarly benefits from longstanding Garden Club support reaching back to the mid1960s. The club financed a landscaping plan, plantings, fencing, and a cobbled roadway. Subsequent funding included support for restoration work after a fire in 1988. continued on page 96

Most recently, the club funded plants for the historically accurate kitchen garden adjacent to the Oldest House, as well as a new perennial garden. Nantucket schools have also received Garden Club donations to improve the surrounding landscape. They recently donated $5,000 for equipment to be used by students in maintaining gardens established in partnership with the school system and Sustainable Nantucket, a Nantucket non-profit organization. Nantucket is dotted with trees planted with financial help from the club. These include shade trees along Jetties Beach Road, at the Lightship Basket Museum, and bordering Broad Street leading to the ferry dock. The club donated $10,000 to replace trees destroyed by a fierce hurricane that hit in 1991. Over the years, residences and facilities for Nantucket's senior citizens—Landmark House, Our Island Home, the Homestead, Saltmarsh Center, and Sherburne Commons—have all received club funds for landscaping purposes, including walking paths and special theme gardens. The club has long supported modest requests from the 40-plot Nantucket Community Garden on Hummock Pond Road for gardening tools and other supplies. Several times a year, club members can be seen adorning the historic fountain in the middle of Main Street. And, of course, there are the daffodils. In addition to starting Nantucket’s annual Daffodil Festival with the Daffodil Show (approved by the American Daffodil Society), Garden Club members installed and help to maintain

plantings along the Fairgrounds Road Bike Path. In honor of the 25th Daffodil Flower Show, they completed the plantings along the Polpis Road Bike Path with daffodils; and, two years ago, in honor of the 40th Daffodil Flower Show, the Garden Club planted about 15,000 bulbs along the newly completed Hummock Pond Road bike path leading to Cisco. For decades, the club has donated daffodil bulbs to island schoolchildren to encourage them to plant more of these beautiful harbingers of spring. The 7th grade science class, under the direction of Irene Egan, helps with the labeling and distribution of the bulbs, making this not only fun, but also a learning experience for the children. Sixty-three years after its founding, the purpose of the Nantucket Garden Club remains to promote better knowledge and love of gardening, plants, flowers, and horticulture, contribute to the beauty of Nantucket, and support conservation initiatives that protect the island's fragile and historic environment. “We are fortunate to have many talented, hard-working members who contribute a great deal of time when they are “on vacation,” explained club President Merrielou Symes. “It is a dedicated group of women... [who] feel they are stewards of our beautiful island.” Be sure to mark your calendars this season for the 42nd Annual Community Daffodil Show on April 30 and May 1, for the Art with Blooms Gallery Walk July 15-17, and for the 62nd Annual House and Garden Tour on August 10. For more details about the Nantucket Garden Club, visit their website at nantucketgardenclub.org.
