Welcoming Spring Spring arrives on the island of Nantucket with a proclamation of brilliant colors. Late April’s embrace of gentle sea breezes and warm sunshine coax new growth from the island’s sandy soil, adorning the roadsides and gardens with daffodil blooms of bright yellow, orange, white, and pink. The annual Daffodil Festival, organized by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, is held each year during the last full weekend in April. Favorite events include the Children’s Parade, Daffy Hat Pageant, Antique and Classic Car Parade, and the Tailgate Picnic. What has evolved into three days of fun began 45 years ago. In 1974, Jean MacAusland, Nantucket summer resident and then publisher of Gourmet magazine, persuaded the Nantucket Garden Club to invite the American Daffodil Society to sponsor a daffodil show on Nantucket. MacAusland and the Garden Club set a goal to plant more than one million daffodil bulbs. The first planting in the autumn of 1974 took place along Milestone Road. Many of the bulbs planted that first year did not survive; they were mowed down before the leaves had a chance to store enough food for the winter. The next planting was done in random clusters farther from the roadbed. This “drift planting” protected the plants and gave them a more natural look. Each year the Garden Club added thousands of bulbs. In the early 1980s, Jean MacAusland ordered eight tons of bulbs to be shipped here directly from the Netherlands. Island residents enthusiastically embraced the idea. Many began to join in the efforts: businesspeople donated materials and individuals helped with the planting. Everyone who participated in placing the bulbs along Polpis Road set flags over the spots where they had set their so that no one would accidentally dig up a daffodil while trying to plant another. The Nantucket Garden Club continues to expand the display of daffodils continued on page 10

To Everything There Is a Season Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation With daffodil season upon us, people on Nantucket are abuzz about spring. Who saw the first osprey, who heard the first peepers and in what pond, and where did the first daffodils bloom (the Atheneum garden, usually)? These observations make for great conversation after the long winter, but this isn’t just fodder for cocktail parties. These observations of nature’s timing are real data. The study of seasonal natural events, usually related to climate, is called phenology. We look for cues in nature for when to plant seeds, when the fish are running, and when to watch for our favorite birds migrating. Whether you’re a farmer planting crops, a birder awaiting spring migration, a business owner hoping for good numbers over Daffodil Weekend, or a child listening for spring peepers, you’re paying attention to nature’s timing. The study of phenology has been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest continual data sets looking at plant timing comes from Kyoto, Japan where people have been recording cherry blossom bloom time since the year 800 AD. In the U.S., the National Lilac Project has been recording first flowering dates for lilac species and varieties since the early 1950s. Nationally, projects like the National Phenology Network (NPN) are organizing professionals and citizen scientists to collect data on phenological events for plants and animals. NPN standardizes data collection and makes the data, research, and educational resources available for anyone to use and learn from. Not only are these types of records interesting and useful to us in our own home, we can use these long-term datasets to investigate changes to the timing of things. In fact, the cherry blossom data from Japan has been used to show that cherry bloom time is now, on average, 10 days earlier than it was continued on page 8

WALKING TOURS Providing Quality Tours Since 1998

The clouds washed away before dawn, and the sun looked over us for once this April. Spring visits, but leaves the engine running. Winter remains in the front bedroom, although he has worn out his welcome. Almost every Winter morning begins under the racing clouds from the northeast, the damp gusts, and the slap of white caps in the harbor. But Spring visited today, with a warm humid wash out of the southwest, bright sunlight, and the twitches of branches, leaves, and yards. It will move in…later. Can’t be sure. Just looking for now. On this bright April morning, we took one of our Young Men to breakfast downtown. We knew everyone in the restaurant, they all knew us, and we would probably all still be there long after the hollandaise sauce coagulated and the restaurant closed. We were dressed for winter. All of us had known the island long enough not to trust it; we wore coats, polar fleece, and boots on a morning when the skies were clear as the eye of God. One of the men at a table near ours tried to get my son’s eye. When the Young Man finally looked up from the menu he had seen fifty times before, our neighbor grabbed his gaze, scooted over, and whispered “I’ve got my eyes on you.” Then he pointed at his eyes, and then the young man’s. We all laughed, eventually. In September, all of the seniors at Nantucket High School step onto a stage they will only leave when Dr Lepore hands them a diploma and they get to fadeout into the future. Throughout the winter, they get asked about the football team, their grades, and their colleges. Junior Miss never ended, it just expanded to include the full year and the entire senior class. Which is fine. The island looks on its young with a fervent and fragile love. We have lost enough of them to darkness and chemistry to finally realize how delicate and frail youth can be. The world we are handing to them doesn’t hold the promise and the hope of the one that we were handed. Granted, the young will not be sent to Vietnam or France with a rifle and a continued on page 15

Who wants to deal with the sticky mess of mixing cocktails out of the boot of your car? Not interested in lugging an entire collection of bottles to your tailgate in order to make just one drink with so many different ingredients? No coolers or glass allowed for your next adventure ahead? There is an easier, more convenient way to have a similar experience without the hassle. Canned cocktails are a most apropos way to enjoy a premade mixed drink without having to go to a bar to have someone make them for you. You can pretend to be your own mixologist on the road, then you have several partially used bottles left over that you probably won’t ever use again. These alternative libations make them more than ideal for your tailgating success. The only clean up required is the recycling of the can that the beverage comes in after consumption, and this leaves your other hand available for the plethora of grab and go snacks at your party.

for centuries. In our own backyard, Dr. Richard Primack from Boston University has shown that flowering times for many New England native plants are about 7 days earlier than they were in the 1850s, which tracks with the warming temperatures associated with climate change. So, what does this mean for Nantucket? Springtime temperatures have been arriving earlier on Nantucket, just like most of New England. There is year-to-year variation, but generally we are seeing springtime temperatures arriving 2 to 4 days earlier than the historic average. What does that mean for our plant species? On Nantucket, we at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) are gathering baseline data on phenological events by observing leaf buds, bud burst, flowering buds, and full flower of multiple plant species. We are tracking the phenology of several native shrubs as well as the Sandplain Blue-eyed Grass, a Species of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Having this baseline of data will help us to detect any changes that may occur to this timing as our climate changes. We’re also collecting data on hatch time and activity of the eastern tent caterpillar. Spring-hatching caterpillars, such as this native species, are particularly responsive to temperature. Along with the phenological observations, we’re collecting temperature and light data at various locations across the property to link current variation in plant timing to temperature, light, and slight elevation changes found throughout the property. To complement these field observations, we are also conducting experiments looking at the effects of earlier spring warming on our shrub species. By forcing early temperatures on our representative shrubs, we note the timing of leaf out in response to temperature changes. While our results are preliminary, research at LLNF has shown that some of our native shrubs (lowbush blueberry, for example) can track the earlier spring warming and leaf out with the warm temperatures. However, just because they leaf out earlier, doesn’t mean they can just cruise into a longer growing season. Springs is also becoming more erratic with more frequent late frost events. Some of our species, like black huckleberry, have been topkilled during late frost events. This is the type of affect which, if it becomes a pattern, could have devastating effects of the overall population. Other species, such as black cherry and beach plum, aren’t able to respond as nimbly to warming temperatures resulting in a delayed phenology from surrounding species. Why does this matter? As the climate warms and phenological events change, mutualisms may become out of sync. For example, pollinators may be late to the party if flowers open early. Migrating birds which time their movements based on day length may miss the hatch of their favorite caterpillars which they rely on for nourishment during nesting season. At LLNF, we’ll continue to collect phenology data and will be adding new species to our protocols. Designed as a long-term project, we will continue to complement field data with experimental research. We’re using this phenology project as part of our Citizen Science objective at LLNF. Check out llnf.org for more about our phenology projects and how you can get involved. The data we’re collecting are also being entered into the National Phenology Network database. Thus, the phenology data will be useful to us on the island, but also contribute regionally and nationally.

A Double-Feature Downtown On April 26, there is a double feature opening downtown in the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery. Primary Concerns is a show that will focus on dominant color schemes or the monochromatic, again playing off the colors of the island as spring awakens. This exhibition will be on display until early May. Shaped by Hand is a 3-D exhibition open to all island artists that will focus on works of wood, plaster, ceramics, metals, glass, marble, found objects, textiles and quilting. “We truly do not know what people will bring in for the Shaped by Hand 3-D show, but the possibilities are endless, said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. The opening reception for both exhibits will be held Friday from 5 to 7 pm in the gallery at 19 Washington Street. For the past number of years the gallery has been delighted to offer an early spring exhibition with two distinctly different shows on each floor, which provides a wonderful opportunity for both our artist members and the viewing public, added Frazier. A stone’s throw from Main Street, the AAN has nearly three hundred local artist members who participate throughout the year in fifteen different exhibitions, and help make the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson an award-winning gallery (Best New England Gallery, Yankee Magazine) one of the most comprehensive venues for local art. Primary Concerns will be on display through May 6, and Shaped by Hand will remain until May 20. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm, closed Sundays for spring. For more details about the AAN and 2019 programs and events, visit nantucketarts.org or call 508-228-0722.

This year, the 45th Annual Daffodil Flower Show will be held on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday from April 28 at Bartlett’s Farm. The theme this year is “Shells and Bells.” Flower arrangement classes include “Wedding Bells & Sea Shells,” “Bell Buoys,” “On the Half Shell,” “Silver Bells and Cockle Shells,” “Bicycle Bells and Slipper Shells,” “A Bucket of Shells,” and “Ships’s Bells and Lobster Shells.” Admission to the show is free, but donations are accepted. The American Daffodil Society recognizes the Daffodil Show of Nantucket as a bona fide Daffodil Show and grants ADS awards to specimens of exceptional merit. In January of 1978, MacAusland and H. The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce now organizes the weekend event and does the judging of the cars, parades, and pageants. Many other activities have been added to Daffodil Weekend during the following decades. Children now have their own parade of decorated, self-propelled vehicles. Men, women, and children join in the revelry of the Daffy Hat Pageant, sporting a wide variety of hats that range from outrageous to elegant. The Pinewoods Morris Men dancers perform ancient springtime ritual dances throughout town and ‘Sconset. prayer. But the dredges are no longer full of scallops and the lines are not heavy with bluefish. Instead, the ferries are full of plumbers and carpenters and the moors have someone else’s house. The ice caps and the middle class have both melted while their parents watched and did nothing. When we look at the seniors, we look at eighteen-year-olds who can’t live the American Graffiti youth that we knew; they don’t get to follow the Dead for a year or hitchhike through Europe. They have to be sharper, faster, and luckier than we were. They have resumes that are on point. As islanders, we watch and notice and put it away on a post-it on the dashboard. Not only the high school students, but we watch everyone else. I would like to believe we watch out of care and not jealousy or envy, but we watch nonetheless. Once in my youth, when the electric heat in the house I was renting sent the bill spiraling, I crashed into the electric company and vented my opinions about a $600 electric bill, and then heard about that from students, teachers, department head, principal, and superintendent. The eyes are everywhere. The eyes watched the Stop and Shop for a week or so. With two corporate chain markets on-island—both Stop and Shop—the strike put a hitch in all of the usual plans and highlighted, once again, how isolating thirty miles of ocean can be. If I lived in Rehoboth, Market Basket, Star Market, Shaws, and even Whole Foods can sell me Honey-of-a-Ham, Cadbury’s Eggs, and Friskies with glee. But out here, the Stop and Shop offered you the essentials: milk, cat food, and diapers. The strike took us out of the accustomed patterns and made us consider. So we watched. Like most Nantucket businesses, many of the workers came from off-island and lived in employee housing. When the strike dropped, they hopped on a boat and went home. The picket line remained for those workers who still call Nantucket home. We knew them. They didn’t have houses with water views, Criss Crafts tied up in the Boat Basin, or vacations on St. Somewhere. They were us. continued on page 16 NANTUCKET ISLAND’S

And for some, they weren’t. The Produce Manager and the rest of U.F.C.W. had time-travelled from another era beyond disruption and Uber, when workers could count on guaranteed health care and retirement plans. The stockers and the slicers don’t have newer pick up trucks than the contractors, but they aren’t as afraid of the emergency room. So they were watched, as everyone else does, with both care and envy. In this particular strike, at this particular moment on-island, not many would cross the line. To buy Mr. Snuffles his Fancy Feast, you had to align yourself with a Dutch multinational and its shareholders. All of the usual corporate spittle about greedy union bosses rattled like pennies in a tip jar. We will take the stockholders’ money and build them a summer mansion in Quaise while in the financial fog of LLC’s and trusts, but we won’t do business in front of our neighbors and family. Those who did took to social media to explain themselves. Those who did not cross the line accounted themselves well and dropped off more donuts for the strikers. The future veers and wanders away. The next generation may not have a bike store, car dealership, or sandwich shop to support and lift children and grandchildren. The ocean warms, the wind picks up, and the bankers wobble and totter along the curb. We have stood by as the Pacific National Bank was sold, Main Street moved off-island, and Nantucket Electric stopped the generators. Those jobs leave for the weekend and come back over Monday on the fast ferry. We watch and hope and root for them and try not to worry. The sun illuminates all of us, all of us with familiar names and faces, and informs us. And, perhaps, calls us to act.

TODAY’S MODERN WINE COOLER Remember the good ol’ days when Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers were first released? Yes, we like to forget about it sometimes, too. For a modern twist on this, think part wine cooler (but way cooler), and part refreshing fruitade. Ramona is an organic Italian wine spritz that doesn’t require a glass, a bottle opener, or even really an occasion to drink it. This is a portable, high-quality alcoholic beverage option that doesn’t take itself (wine) too seriously and fills a void for those who want something spritzy in what would be a traditional beer moment. It is made from organic grapes from Sicily and flavored with natural ruby grapefruit and organic cane syrup. To make it even better, it is gluten free, and vegan. This lively, refreshing spritz is served in a slim 12 ounce can and weighs in at just 7.5% alcohol by volume, much lower than most wine on its own. This is the canned cocktail for all your summer picnic needs, especially if you have a retro theme. Not to mention how Instagram worthy the product is! Perfect Pairing: Grab a salad or sandwich of choice from Sophie T’s on Dave Street, they’re famous on-island for their pizza, but also make sensational subs and hearty salads: 508-325-6265

MARGARITA MADE EASY

dinner

Nightly from 5pm bar opens at 4:30pm

Squeezing limes on the fly typically results in a disaster, especially when you don’t even have a knife on hand. Most margarita mixes contain loads of sugar and synthetic ingredients to try and recreate the fabulous flavors we like in this drink. Take the cleaner, leaner route with Sauza Agua Fuerte Spiked Lime Sparkling Water. Spiked sparkling waters are typically made from either a malt base, which is not gluten free, or a sugar base, which makes them higher in calories. This Ready-to-Drink is made by starting with crisp, sparkling water, then combining it with fresh tasting Sauza Silver Tequila and natural lime fruit essence. Lime is the perfect flavor to pair with the tequila as the two are already acquainted in a classic margarita. While “agua fuerte” roughly translates in English to mean “strong water,” this sparkling beverage comes in at just 112 calories per serving and is only 5% alcohol by volume. The 12 ounce slim can is best served chilled or this drink is quite refreshing served over ice. This is perfect for tequila fans looking for more than tequila on the rocks and less than a fancy version of a margarita. It’s easy to spot with its traditional Mexican sugar skull artwork on the exterior of the can as well! Perfect Pairing: Tacos made to order from Easy Street Cantina, located on the Easy Street strip near the Steamship ferry: 508-228-5418

Cocktails sometimes come and go out of fashion, just like go-go boots and bell-bottom jeans. With the recent interest (resurgence) in rye whiskey, it is no surprise that this spirit, too, has made itself into a cocktail can of its own. Inspired by the original Hochstadter's recipe of old, Slow and Low Rock & Rye made by Cooper Spirits Company has made the Old Fashioned cocktail, well, not so old fashioned anymore. The original rock & rye recipe came about when a barkeep would pour a shot of rye and customers would then add their own rock candy to soften the harsh flavor of the brown spirit. The medicinal properties of this concoction where heralded by pharmacists of the day to heal what ailed you. Later, bootleggers and distillers began making their own variations on this on their own backcountry blends. This offering is made from a blend of aged Straight Rye Whiskey, raw local honey from Pennsylvania, air-dried navel oranges from Florida, Angostura-style cocktail bitters, and a pinch of rock candy. It comes in a handy single serve 100 ml mini pop-top can at 42% alcohol by volume. Need no for fixing a bunch of ingredients together, you can savor this neat as a shot or over ice, as an old fashioned. The saloon like essence packaging is rock and roll inspired, so perhaps best consumed while rocking out to your favorite tailgating jams. Perfect Pairing: Get finger licking good ribs from Crosswinds, call ahead to order: 508-228-6005. Whatever your alternative libation choice for tailgating, please be sure to consume responsibly, have a designated driver, and pack out what you pack in to the party. Happy Daffy to all, and may the best tailgate theme win!

Featured Restaurant: The Proprietors bar + table

Deliciously Different by C. Oscar Olson There are a lot of choices for in-town dining on Nantucket. Hungry patrons can find options for every occasion and budget, every taste and mood. When we’re not quite sure what we want, we head to a place where the menu is fresh and eclectic, the atmosphere is classy yet fun, and the service is nothing short of superb. We walk down India Street to The Proprietors Bar and Table. We arrived on a chilly Thursday evening, cold even by Spring standards on Nantucket. The heat was on and the welcome was warm, we relaxed immediately as we walked to our table. Every dining room in the restaurant brings its own special vibe to each meal. Every space is The No. 2 & The No. 7 packed with personality. We sat in our favorite spot, underneath a skylight and surrounded by 2 walls of windows overlooking colorful spring flowers brightening this gray Nantucket evening. Mixing up some of the best cocktails on-island and an impeccable wine list compiled by co-owner Orla, a drink before dinner is always a good idea. Proprietors also boasts hard-to-find drafts, cans, and bottles that keep us coming back to see what’s new. General manager and restaurant partner Anna Worgess brought us two of her favorites. The No. 2 combines a refreshing sparkling rose with Grainger’s organic vodka. It gets some zip from passion fruit and lime and leaves a lingering luster of vanilla on its way down. The No. 7 is for the tequila lover: Espolon Blanco meets a house coconut chili liqueur, there’s a kiss of sweetness from guava and a bite of acidity from fresh lime. Proprietors’ menu, like a lot of other things, is refreshingly different from most other island eateries. Not only are about a third of their offerings vegetarian, the kitchen will happily make most of them vegan-friendly—all you have to do is ask. Also, instead of dividing the dishes into categories like soups, salads, entrees, or sides, Chef/Owner Michael LaScola arranges it from light to heavy, top to bottom, start to finish, beginning to end. There is a clear emphasis on small plate and family-style dining, with each dish designed to be shared, though you might not want to. It might be less traditional, but we think it’s a lot more fun. So bring your friends and get ready to pass some plates. Both Chef Michael and Anna urged us to try the Everything Bagel

Perfectly portable Daffodil picnic pastries!

Doughnuts (cover photo). These little bites are just like they sound: The fluffy, airy texture of a doughnut with the savory crustiness of a bagel. They’re filled with a fluffy dill pickle creme and topped with pickled onion and Hackle Back Caviar, the last wild-caught caviar in the country. It’s also lower in salt than most caviars, so the pickles easily enhance its beautifully briny character. This is one doughnut that won’t ruin your meal. The Hamachi Crudo (cover photo) had us dreaming about warmer weather. Served cold, the smooth and buttery fish takes a dip in a vibrant tomatillo turmeric aguachile. A smooth mole verde compliments the richness of the tuna while tidbits of pineapple bring out a fruitier side. A crunch of crispy taro keeps things interesting, much like a class of chilled sparkling wine; the perfect match to this meal. For a seemingly Fried Rock Shrimp endless symphony of flavors and textures, try the Fried Rock Shrimp. Crunchy clouds of white conceal tender succulent shrimp, the best we’ve tasted in a long time. A savory, nutty salsa macha is offset by ripe ruby red grapefruit, while popcorn only adds to the fun. Everything comes together in a new way with every bite. If you think you know Flatbread, think again. The warm, just golden bread delivers a smooth spread of sweet and sour eggplant, crumbles of Vermont feta, and vibrant green kale zhoug—a rich play on pesto. These brighter components are contrasted by a sunflower tahini. These earthy colors swirl

and sing on the palate bringing layer after layer of incomparable flavor. If there was a perfect bar snack this would be it. Full disclosure: we were on the fence about ordering the Crispy Greek Smelts. Not unlike anchovies, these small, finger-sized fish are fried whole. Served atop a spread of garlic aioli and topped with parsley, they were easily our favorite starter of the evening. Every bite offered a delicate crisp and the essence of the sea, then magically melted away in our mouths. All of these small plates hit every mark and left us satisfied but still wanting more. We were very much excited about what was coming next. Crispy Greek Smelts We won’t soon forget the richness of the Vidalia Onion and Cheddar Johnny Cake. Cornmeal can often lead to a heavy, stodgy mess, but this flapjack is fluffy beyond belief. It’s browned beautifully and topped with delicious duck confit. Bread and butter pickles and pickled red onions both work to enhance the sweetness throughout and offer a tang to tie it together. The Buttermilk Brined Chicken was unimaginably juicy. A buttery smoked hock stands tall on the plate alongside creamy rice grits. Mop it all in the ramp butter and leave the perfect pickled slaw for that clean crunch. If there was ever a night for comfort food this was it, and Props scores a home run with their Cavatelli. A piping hot mushroom bolognese mingles with finely chopped kale and creme fraiche offering contrast in color and flavor. It’s topped with a pine nut crumb, and the fresh doughy pasta soaks it all in. The Pork Ribs are tender and toothsome with a salty-sweet crust. They’re served with a deliciously different bamboo rice, fried garlic, green onions, and crazy complex Chinese black bean sauce. When you live on an island it’s normal to get spoiled with fresh seafood. It seems every menu in town offers scallops, but not every menu has Seared Scallop perfection. These browned beauties are served atop a savory sunchoke miso with barely charred bok choy for added depth. Gingered kumquats brought a dazzling brightness and black vinegar comSeared Scallop bines each component seamlessly. The scallops were easily one of the best dishes of the evening. At this point, we could have happily said our good-byes as we headed

home to settle in. But then we would’ve missed dessert. The options are ever-changing; to be sure to ask your server and finish your meal with something different. Every option seamlessly combines both sweet and savory components for a truly unique finish. The Blood Orange Panna Cotta brought the best of both worlds. The soft, sweet custard was caught between an icy rhubarb grenada and herbal fennel crumble. Different combinations of the three reveal otherwise unnoticed flavors. Our favorite part of the Peanut Butter Fudge was the scoop of brown butter ice cream. It helped to lighten the deliciously dense fudge, and the candied popcorn was just plain fun. For something a little more classic, go for The Chocolate Cake Twinkie. It’s rich and sticky-sweet, sharing the plate with candied hazelnuts and decked out with flame kissed marshmallow. Nothing settles the stomach after a good meal like ginger, which made The Ginger Beer Float our favorite finale. Stunningly citrusy blueberry lemon curd ice cream erupts when it meets the ginger beer, and there’s a full 12 ounce can so you can keep topping it off. When dining at The Proprietors, we urge you to take a step outside of your comfort zone. Every ingredient, no matter how foreign or exotic it might sound, is prepared and plated immaculately every time. Be adventurous— you won’t regret it.
