In the Open Air
Artists on Nantucket, professional and those who have just learned to paint, will participate in the Artists Association of Nantucket’s 12th annual Plein Air Nantucket. This festival starts on Tuesday, June 13 and continues through Sunday, June 18, with special gatherings and an awards ceremony. It offers many opportunities for the public to see art in process and to enjoy several beautiful areas of Nantucket. There is no fee to attend or to participate.
Plein Air Nantucket is open to all artists who wish to paint in the fresh air and pristine scenery of the island and enjoy the camaraderie of painting with peers. On June 14 from 10 am to 2 pm, the Annual Paint Out will be held in two picturesque locations: the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum at 158 Polpis Road and the UMass Field Station at 180 Polpis Road. Carpooling is encouraged as parking is very limited. The Shipwreck Shuttle departs from Visitor Services at 25 Federal Street on the half hour from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm to transport the public to the Shipwreck Museum. The shuttle offers hourly returns until 5 pm.
New for 2023, Quick Paint timed painting sessions will be held from 10 am to 12:30 pm on June 15 at Children’s Beach and at the Nantucket Land Bank’s Creeks Preserve at 2 Milestone Road.
Throughout the week-long Plein Air, AAN’s Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf is the festival headquarters. Here freshly created artwork will be displayed daily on the “Wet Walls’ for public viewing and purchase.
A huge proponent of en plein air painting, Frank Swift Chase taught outdoor classes starting in 1920 through the early 1950s, and the core of his regular students became the founders of AAN. In this spirit, AAN hosts Plein Air Nantucket annually and presents the Frank Swift Chase awards: juried prizes presented to artists who participate in the festival. The last evening of the festival, Sunday, June 18, the awards ceremony will be held in the Big Gallery from 5 pm.
Continuing through June 19 is the exhibit Blue Skies in the AAN Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street. To June 16, the Think Big exhibit will be on display in AAN’s Big Gallery, alongside the Plein Air Wet Walls.
It’s Tick Time
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationWith FIGAWI in the rearview mirror, it really feels like summer is upon us on the island. As we all start to spend more time outdoors on our conservation trails, we come into contact more frequently with one of the few hazards we have on Nantucket. We don’t have skunks, bear, coyotes, or venomous snakes. We do, however, have ticks. Late spring/early summer is a boon time for ticks, but with a mild winter and temperatures rarely going below freezing, ticks on island have been active all year round.
Whether you live here or are just visiting, it’s important to arm yourself with knowledge before heading out. So what ticks do we have on Nantucket?
The Black-legged tick (formerly called the deer tick) was our primary worry for a long time since they spread the Lyme disease-causing spirochete, among other infections. These ticks are found predominantly in woody, shrubby habitats. Research has shown that they prefer the humidity of understory shrubs. Their numbers rely greatly on the distribution of its reproductive host: white-tailed deer. On Nantucket, this is our most common tick.
In recent years, the Lone Star tick has been increasing in number across the island. Lone Star ticks are notable for the distinctive white dot on their reddish-brown bodies which is actually only found on adult females. The adult males have white dots or streaks on the outer edges of their bodies. Nymphs are smaller and distinguished by reddish-brown bodies and fast speed. Yes, they will run up your clothes upon contact.
Historically, from south-eastern, south-central, and mid-Atlantic states, their distribution has been expanding with warming temperatures of climate change. The expanding range of Lone Star ticks in New England now includes populations in coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. And they co-occur with Black-legged ticks in coastal Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the islands.
Lone Star ticks have similar life stages as the more familiar Black-legged ticks —larva, nymph, and adult—but they are able to complete their life cycle in one year. Lone Stars are known to be more aggressive than other ticks, seeking out a blood meal by following the carbon dioxide. Their bite is said to hurt because they have longer mandibles, which might make them easier to detect and remove before disease transmission.
The good news is that Lone Star ticks are less likely to carry pathogens than Blacklegged ticks. Lone Star ticks can transmit several disease agents and sometimes cause a delayed red meat allergy “alpha-gal syndrome,” which can show up months after a tick bite. Lone Star ticks don’t transmit Lyme Disease, but they can carry tularemia, human
The Secret Weapon
by Steve “Tuna” TornovishThe text from my buddy Greg said, “The morning bite has been hot at Point O’ Breakers. Let’s hit it tomorrow.” Greg is a hard charger who puts in his beach time fishing for striped bass. I knew that his information was solid, so we agreed to meet around 4:00 a.m. and fish until we had to leave for work. This was in early June a couple of years ago and the striper fishing had been sporadic. Greg and I fished hard that next morning, with each of us picking up some short fish (less than the 28 inch minimum) in the darkness.
Shortly after sunrise, a friendly young man named Nick Whitbeck arrived and started casting next to us. He hooked a fish almost instantly. Beginner’s luck, right? Wrong. Nick caught and released a half dozen fish, most of them keeper size, in about twenty minutes while Greg and I simply practiced our casting with no bites. Needless to say, we made our way over to see what magic Nick was using. He showed us an amber colored plug that looked as if a needlefish lure had mated with a pencil popper. Neither Greg nor I had seen this lure before. Nick could throw the lure a long way and then pop it slowly on the surface, a perfect replication of a squid trying to escape from hungry predators. Wow, where did you get that lure, we asked? “I make them,” Nick replied.
That was our introduction to the Hellfire 180, the secret weapon. It truly was the fishing lure that I had been waiting for my whole life. The Hellfire casts like a dream, utilizing a nifty combination of a rear ball bearing weighting system and a tapered body design. It splashes just like a squid would do. And man oh man, does it catch fish. It is truly a perfect choice for Nantucket surfcasters.
Word spread like wildfire through the Nantucket beach fishermen. Stripers, bluefish, and even false albacore crushed those things! Soon there was a Hellfire (or six) in every tackle box on the island. The lures cut through the wind better than any topwater plug I had ever thrown. And there was almost no way to fish them incorrectly: the Hellfire was truly the plug I had always dreamed of.
Nick is simply the most likable guy that you could meet. He grew up in Plymouth MA and has always loved to fish. He jokes that he fished on the rocks behind the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant when he was a kid, trying to avoid the security guards. Nick’s love of fishing, coupled with an inquisitive mind and an

CELEBRATING 53 YEARS! yesterdaysisland.com
The Currents of Time
by Robert P. BarsantiThe lilacs have bloomed. The purples colonies of flowers dip down into the sunlight, and suffer the ministrations of the bees. If the wind isn’t blowing from the east, the heavy drift of their scent washes through the windows and pools up in the air.
I don’t know much about flowers and bushes. I suspect lilacs are activated by sunlight and not necessarily warmth. In this new climate we are wearing, the air hasn’t been all that warm this spring, but the fog has been a bit lighter. Either way, our lilacs have received the correct biological stimulus and they have dropped and hung their weights of flowers.
In the exuberance of youth, we planted these bushes. We were celebrating children, and then we kept celebrating with a few more bushes. Before the lilacs, the property had been bordered by rosa rugosa. Those red flowers bloom with hardy strength and humble colors, along with thorns. Hardy, humble, and thorny are the appropriate markers for successful marriage, but we would rather celebrate the pendulous fertility of smelly purple flowers. And here they are.
Our children have grown and aged, as have the lilacs. A small bush that could fit into a pot and sit in the back seat of a Jeep Wrangler has crept both skyward and earthward into a thick knot of life that would overfill the backseat and the car, if we could even fit the plants in. Those flowers come back every year, just about at Memorial Day, along with Figawi, graduation, visitors, and the hope for the Red Sox.
So much of my affection for our island comes from this impassive repetition. The lilacs will bloom every June, the sailboats will come, and the tennis courts will fill. We are an island in the currents of time. On the mainland, malls transform from stores to hospitals, skyscrapers fill and empty, and new streets worm their way into the landscape. Out here, the calendar seems to freeze in an eternal June, with fog, chill, and the vulgar smell of blooming flowers.
In June, visitors come out to check their bearings. Off-island, snow and ice have taken away the beloved maples, the economy has moved our neighbors to North Carolina, and a hedge fund has decided we really want to buy frozen yogurt instead of a Fribble. But, off the boat, visitors go to their favorite beach and find it the same, the moors have not changed more than a little growth, and the winking “Brownie A La Mode” remains on the menu. God remains in a waffle cone.

Undersea Treasure Hunts
by James GriederI’ve been working at the Nantucket Atheneum as a research associate for a little over a year, and in that time, I’ve fallen down more than one historical rabbit hole, learning about interesting and some downright odd moments in Nantucket’s history. From time to time, my explorations bring me face-to-face with members of my own family.
One of my on-going projects is to compile a list of all the speakers and other entertainers who have appeared on stage at the Atheneum from its very beginning, a period spanning nearly two centuries. Reading the digitized copies of Nantucket newspapers in the Atheneum’s collection, with a focus on one of the island’s main cultural institutions, I’ve witnessed the prosperity and optimism of Nantucket at the height of its whaling industry, followed by mounting concern as more and more business flowed to the upstart New Bedford port rather than Nantucket. The crews of whalers literally abandoned ship and ran off into the hills to press their luck there during the Gold Rush, leaving no one to continue whaling, or even to return the vessel to its home port. Advancements in lighting technology, and the sinking of the first oil well in Pennsylvania, meant that whale oil and its by-products like spermaceti candles weren’t as sought-after as they had been. Investments dried up during the Panic of 1857, when over-extended businessmen were ruined, and the island’s economy cratered.
The newspapers are full of articles touting the latest industry that Nantucketers were trying to import—manufactories for silk, hats, shoes, new crops to grow, new animals to breed. A lot of people were out of work, and island leaders were desperate to restart the economy. An article in the August 11, 1860 edition of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror that caught my eye was about a submarine experiment involving a “suit of armor” that had been purchased by a local company, to be used in salvage operations on the many shipwrecks in Nantucket waters.
The device was demonstrated by a Mr. Perry, working from the Silas Parker, a vessel moored between Straight and Old South wharves. He climbed down a ladder wearing the “suit of armor” and descended about twelve feet down to the bottom of the harbor. Perry walked around for nearly ten minutes, with air bubbles

ehrlichiosis, and STARI (southern tick associated rash illness), but the prevalence of these infections is much lower.
There is little known in the medical field about alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) and it is a growing area of research. AGS affects people differently, with symptoms ranging from mild irritation to anaphylactic shock when consuming mammalian meat products. Some people, with management over time, have had their allergy go into remission. Two people I know who have tested positive for AGS had very different initial symptoms and have been managing their allergy with the help of their doctors.
Dr. Allison Snow has been researching the ticks of Nantucket for the past three years. Her research, funded in part by the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative, was conducted in an effort to provide a baseline for Nantucket on tick populations as well as infection rates. Tick densities and infection prevalence were recorded for study sites on Nantucket and Tuckernuck islands. Her study involved dragging sampling cloths and collecting data on the surrounding vegetation at each site. Nine sites around Nantucket, plus one on Tuckernuck, were sampled this way.
The results of this study were recently compiled for publication. During her study, Dr. Snow didn’t find dog ticks at any of the sites. While they have been found in the past on Nantucket, there is some evidence that the newer, more aggressive tick species are outcompeting the dog ticks.
Dr. Snow found that, for Black-legged ticks, nymphs were most abundant at shadier sites and least common in grasslands and scrub oak thickets. The infection rate varied by year but was, on average, for Nantucket: 10-20% infection rate for Borrelia burgdorferi (the Lyme Disease spirochete), 11-15% for Babesiosisi, and 17% for Anaplasmosis. The rates were higher for the Tuckernuck samples, as was the rate of co-infection.
Results also showed that Lone Star nymphs and adults were extremely abundant on Tuckernuck. Lone Star ticks were rarer on Nantucket, but the numbers captured increased each year of the study and were found primarily at study sites on the western end of the island.
While she cannot speculate on the amount of time it will take, Dr. Snow expects that eventually Lone Star ticks will become well established across Nantucket. The silver lining (if we can call it that) is that the Lone Star ticks tested on Nantucket and from elsewhere in Massachusetts have had low prevalence of infection. Currently, the greatest health threat from Lone Star ticks on Tuckernuck and Nantucket may be acquiring the alpha-gal allergy to red meat. This is an emerging area of research with new and diverse reaction to the infection.

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

on the surface marking his passage. He then climbed back up the ladder to say that the silt from walking had muddied the water, making it impossible for him to see, but he’d go back down if the owners wanted him to. The owners were satisfied with the results, and soon the suit was used to raise several tons of coal from the Sarah Woodbridge, wrecked on Long Shoal the previous spring. The article concludes by noting that Captain D.G. Patterson was given charge of the device, and that Perry, “who has been employed in getting up the sunken ships at Sebastopol,” would remain on-island to answer questions about the apparatus.
I’d heard of diving bells and similar devices being used for underwater operations in the 18th century, but had always understood atmospheric diving suits to be a much later development. I returned to the article for clues. There’s a plethora of Perrys online, but none that I could identify with certainty; nor was there a trace of the ship Silas Parker. D.G. Patterson was an erstwhile whaling captain from Nantucket, trying his hand at a new enterprise. It was the phrase “sunken ships at Sebastopol” that brought a trove of information to light.
In the mid-1850s, the Crimean War was initially being waged between the Russian and Ottoman empires. When it appeared that the Ottomans were faltering, a coalition of European nations, including France and Great Britain, entered the conflict to prevent Russia from becoming dominant in the region. British and French fleets entered the Black Sea in January 1854, and later that year allied forces landed near Sevastopol, home to Russia’s southern fleet, and began a siege of the city that lasted eleven months.
When it became apparent an attack was immanent, the Russian defenders blocked the entrance to the harbor by sinking older sailing ships at the mouth of the bay. One year later, as the Czar’s forces abandoned the town, the remainder of the Black Sea Fleet, along with transports and merchant vessels, was also scuttled. Nearly a hundred ships carpeted the bottom of the bay when British, French, and Turkish forces occupied the port. English engineers pronounced the job of raising the hulks an impossibility, and were content to let them rot–a slow process that would ensure the strategic port remained unusable for years to come.
The Yankee Expedition to Sebastopol by Chuck Veit, tells the story of the Rus-

sians’ solution once they’d regained control of the city: one that involved a young American from Lynn, MA named John E. Gowen, who’d developed a reputation for salvaging ships that experts had deemed unsalvageable. The rewards were considerable—the value of sunken ships was estimated to be roughly $65 million (an eye-watering $2.313 billion today), along with some $800,000 worth of chains and anchors that the English and French had thrown overboard after the siege. What’s more, on the warships the mechanical equipment had been covered with a preparation of tallow to prevent water damage: hopes were high that many were in decent condition and could be salvaged.
The plan was to use a diving bell and submarine armor to explore the vessels and prepare them to be raised by sealing any holes and pumping the water out of the hulk. Then sacks made airtight with tar or gutta percha—an early stand in for rubber— were to be fastened to the sides of the ships and inflated with air to bring them to the surface. Marine camels, similar to the ones depicted in the model on display in the Nantucket Whaling Museum, along with steam engines and hydraulic pumps, were sent to Sevastopol to assist with the salvage.
Problems plagued the project from the start. Gowen’s crew wasn’t making much progress, in large part due to the fact that they were essentially learning by trial and error. The condition of the ships was also much worse than expected—those sunk to block the harbor entrance were older vessels at the end of their lifespan even before they slipped beneath the waves, and many of the wrecks had become deeply embedded in mud and sand. The carefully scuttled modern steamships had largely fallen prey to the teredo worm of the Black Sea, and the timber was so rotten that the water ran through it like a sieve.
The Russians grew impatient at the delay, and a rival salvage operation, the Boston Relief and Submarine Company, was brought in to help. The new company was on a steep learning curve to match Gowen’s by now well-skilled crew, and a letter to the Philadelphia Press in August 1857 depicts the Bostonians as rank amateurs:
“
‘An old practical diver,’ as he represented himself to be, from Boston, was the first to begin operations, but he made such a bungling attempt that an Eng-
lishman, who had been in the employment of the Russians as diver for eight months previous, and was engaged by our company, insisted that this must have been the very first time the Bostonian had ever been in the water. ”
In the end, the Boston company pulled out of the project, citing financial reasons. The anchors and cables raised were sufficient to cover some of the expenses of the companies, but not all of them, and the condition of the wrecks meant there wouldn’t be much salvage to split between the two companies. There was confusion in the American press at first, with claims that both companies had ceased operations, but it became clear that the “Philadelphia company” was still on the job. The Boston crew is no longer mentioned in the archive, and must have returned to the USA. It’s plausible that Perry or someone else associated with Boston Relief and Submarine Company convinced an out-of-work whaling captain on Nantucket to invest in a new salvage venture in island waters. That’s only speculation, but how many submarine suits of armor could there have been floating around New England in those days?
Made of rubberized cloth sandwiched between layers of canvas, the “suit of armor” was more suit than armor. The helmet was that iconic brass or copper globe with small glass-covered “portholes” for seeing out of that we’ve all seen in old movies and restaurant fish tanks. The air supply came from a tube tucked under the arm that connected to the helmet: if anything went wrong, there was a rope to tug on. The whole suit weighed more than 100 pounds, largely due to the lead weights used to keep the diver submerged.
Meanwhile, topside, a crew of three worked together to keep the diver alive: one monitoring the air hose to keep it unobstructed, one manning pumps supplying the air, and one keeping an eye on the signal rope.
Operators complained that the outfits leaked badly, and sometimes there was “no less than two or three buckets of water in it.” There was no insulation to the suits beyond the layers, so they would have gotten very cold very quickly. Meanwhile, the air that came through the breathing tube was scorching hot from being pumped through the machinery. And shuffling about the bottom in lead-lined boots inevitably stirred up a cloud of silt, reducing visibility to zero. It’s amazing they were able to salvage anything at all, under those conditions.
But they did, including tons of coal from the wrecked Sarah Woodbridge. Long Shoal, where they salvaged the coal from that schooner, lies between and to the north of Muskeget and Chappaquiddick Island. Today inter-island ferries pass just north of the hazard, and it’s easy to see how a ship could wreck there. It’s
Undersea Treasure Hunts
impressive that a diver could succeed in a region of surging tides.
from page 17
But how did the ship come to be wrecked on Long Shoal to begin with, and what happened to her crew? When I googled the vessel’s name, Sarah Woodbridge, I stumbled across an unexpected family connection: the first result that popped up was a link to an article about my grandmother, Ruth Chapel Grieder. She was being recognized for her work with the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum, and told the story of the rescue of the crew of the Sarah Woodbridge by James C. Dunham of Tuckernuck, her great-grandfather.
It wasn’t long after the doomed schooner struck the shoal during a severe storm on Christmas Day that Tuckernuckers spotted the distressed vessel. A crew of local men under the command of Dunham made their way out to the wrecked ship in a Humane Society lifeboat. With the high seas and a roaring gale it was impossible to get all to shore safely. Dunham instructed the Tuckernuck crew to head back to the island and wait for his signal before attempting a second rescue. That night, the Sarah Woodbridge filled with water: all hands were forced to the quarterdeck, which was a mass of ice. They implored Dunham to signal for another rescue attempt, but he knew it would not be successful with the current conditions. Wet, miserable, and on the edge of hypothermia, Dunham fashioned the main sail into a shelter and hunkered down for the rest of the night. At dawn, the steamer Island Home approached the desperate men but was unable to get close enough to render assistance.
When the weather eased slightly, Dunham signaled to the men on Tuckernuck, and the lifesaving crew responded quickly. All hands were safely brought to Muskeget. Dunham was a local hero after his night aboard the wrecked Sarah Woodbridge, though he never received official recognition for his remarkable rescue. What’s more, if I’d ever heard that story growing up, I’d forgotten all about it because it was news to me: stories about James C. Dunham that remembered were about him being the black sheep of Tuckernuck who waged—and lost—a war of inconvenience on Boston Brahmins who came to the island to swim in the nude and lounge about in kimonos. But that is a story for another time.
The Secret Weapon
engineer’s eye, has developed his company, Island X Lures, into a major player in the northeast salt water fishing arena.
“The Rhode Island show was huge,” Nick told me, speaking of the New England Saltwater Fishing Show, held this past March. His products sold like crazy and, best of all, Nick got a lot of feedback from a wide variety of fishermen. As he manned his booth, Nick learned that fishermen in other locales fished the Hellfire in vastly different ways and still caught fish. “One guy that I knew from Plymouth told me that he would cast it out, wait until the lure was on the bottom and then reel it in painfully slow. And it worked!”
The 2023 fishing season is going to feature the big brother of another Island X product with a great reputation: the Sidewinder. The original Sidewinder is a tiny lure, comparatively – 3.75 inches long and weighing .75 ounces--but is a nifty little bait in certain conditions. I love throwing it in the harbor, particularly early in the season when the striped bass are keyed in on smaller bait like sand eels. Greg uses it everywhere, including in the surf on the south shore. Stripers generally hug the shoreline so those fishing for them do not have to toss a bait out for any great distance. The Sidewinder, true to its name, swims in a tantalizing S pattern back to the fisherman.
The new version of this lure is the Sidewinder XL. This plug is six inches long and weighs 1.75 ounces. Nick told me that this plug was developed for night fishermen who felt that they needed a lure with the action of the smaller one but with a larger profile for night fishing. The XL comes in a floating version as well as a slow sinking model. Nick showed me some testing videos that he had shot of the plug sliding through the water. Yeah, let’s just say that I don’t think that anyone fishing against me in a tournament should use one of these. Nope. Not at all…
Several cases full of the new Sidewinder XL were stacked in Nick’s garage. Nick told me that those cases were about to be shipped to Larry’s Tackle Shop, a great fishing tackle store on Martha’s Vineyard. “They’re all bright pink or bone colored for the Vineyard.” Nick explained that certain color patterns tend to work better in certain locations. For example, mackerel patterns are a favorite of fish-

from page 19
ermen on Cape Cod, including the folks who fish “The Ditch,” aka the Cape Cod Canal. The Nantucket crew love the amber colors, the olive and white patterns and the “electric chicken,” my favorite mid-summer pattern, which is bright pink on the top with a lateral holographic stripe down the center and bright yellow on the belly. Hey, don’t judge me – the fish simply love them! Finally, there’s a universal favorite of all bass fishermen: the night fishing color of “blurple” a black and purple mix. Darker colors show up better against the relative light of the night sky than lighter hues. Blurple became the optimal combination of the colors at the dark end of the spectrum.
Nick’s lures all feature single hooks as opposed to treble hooks. He understands the importance of releasing fish with a minimum of trauma in order for them to continue to breed and thrive. Nick is always thinking about the next lure to fill a gap for us fishermen. Currently, he is working up clay models for a segmented soft plastic minnow that can withstand the teeth of a bluefish. “There’s a lot of frustration, plenty of ups and downs. I’m not trying to mimic what’s on the market already. Finding the sweet spot for the weighting is the biggest challenge. I just tinker with them until I get it right.”
Has Nick got it right? I certainly think so, as do my clients and fellow anglers who now swear by the Island X line. “I want these products to be every fisherman’s confidence lure,” Nick told me. Mission accomplished, Nick!
It’s Tick Time
from page 10
From Allison Snow’s research: “Compared to Black-legged ticks, Lone Star ticks lay more eggs per female (~5,000 vs. 3,000), have better nymphal survival, are more attracted to CO2 emitted by hosts, quest for bloodmeals in more habitats, move greater distances, move more quickly, and do not rely on small mammals for bloodmeals during their immature stages, instead feeding mainly on deer. Lone Star ticks occur primarily in woods and adjacent areas but are often found in grassy habitats as well.” As someone who spends a lot of time in Nantucket’s open space, I’m learning that Lone Star ticks will require even more diligence that prevention for Black-legged ticks.
“The adults and nymphs of Lone Stars are common in June. Unlike deer ticks, which are sensitive to low humidity, Lone Stars don’t mind being in open, sunny habitats, including lawns,” Dr. Snow says about the Lone Star Ticks. “On Nantucket, their distribution is still patchy and mostly on the western end of the island, but people are encountering them other places, too. The situation on Nantucket could follow what has happened on the Vineyard, where they are especially common in Aquinnah and on Chappaquiddick.”
Dr. Snow’s work has been submitted for publication, but her research hasn’t ended. She’s taken her sampling methods to Martha’s Vineyard in the next step of investigating tick population, infection rates, and potential spread.
What’s the best way to protect yourself from ticks on Nantucket? Staying on paths, and checking clothes after being outside are good initial steps. Dogs should be treated with a preventative, and you may want to explore vaccine options for your dog (like the Lyme vaccine). Treating clothing with permethrin can be a big help. I never thought I would recommend a chemical, but with the rise of Lone Star ticks in particular and considering their tenacity, I have started treating my field pants with permethrin. Do not put it on your skin, but permethrin clothing and spraying on shoes can help keep ticks from biting you.
Dr. Snow notes, “When I was working on Tuckernuck, I didn’t want to walk on the grass or in the woods without being totally covered up and carrying a lint roller for removing them from my clothes before they got to my neck. (Note – so far, compared to Tuckernuck, they are a lot less abundant in places where they occur on Nantucket.)”
For more information about prevention, what to do about ticks in your yard, or actions to take if you’ve been bitten, the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension program has a wealth of information posted on the Barnstable County Website: capecod.gov/departments/cooperative-extension/programs/ticks-bugs/. Cape Cod Cooperative Extension entomologist, Larry Dapsis, populated this website including a series of “Tick Talks”: short videos about the ticks found on Cape Cod, prevention, and more. Even though it’s based on the Cape, the information is very relevant for Nantucket.
With research, cooperative knowledge, and information sharing, we can all continue to enjoy the out of doors. And, hey, at least we still don’t have any coyotes.

The Currents of Time
from page 7
Islanders have similar touchstones, be they locations, people, or food. Last week, in the celebration of a birthday without a number, we ate in a timeless restaurant. I ordered the same “Steak Frites” I had been eating since I moved to the island, with the same bernaise sauce and truffle fries. Dinner ended with coffee and a chocolate pot du creme. We knew the waiters and the bartenders, they knew us and we walked out under the fog and in the benediction of time.
In addition to lilacs and bernaise sauce, this season also brings graduation. At the high school, the days pick up velocity. They march by at the same pace, dribbling on through the spring when jobs, futures, colleges have all been decided but for the awards. Graduation exerts its rampant gravitational pull, tugging the young people through exams, proms, yearbooks, caps and gowns. “Here, honey, let us take a picture of you in this one last moment…”
Of course, graduations are all the same, year to year, decade to decade, century to century. The kids put on a gown from the middle ages and follow the dance steps that everyone else danced before them.
I attended one of the boy’s graduations this spring. It was not all that different from his graduation from Lighthouse or Nantucket High. Under a cloudless and fogless sky, the paying audience heated and burned. But on stage and under the mortar boards, the same events passed as have passed for centuries. Words washed over the young, followed by a “shake with the right, take with the left” then lunch, followed

After that costumed, accustomed, and ceremonial timeless moment, time came swirling about them in the growing heat of a Vermont afternoon. The college wanted them moved out by 11 p.m. Diplomas and canes were packed into cars, along with comforters, plants, and the posters that made Room 223 their homes. Then their community burst; the calendar’s velocity tore them from each other and back into the future.
Their future has the usual monumental problems. The climate is warming. AI has challenged the value of all of their expensive educations. Phones, Instagram, and LinkedIn freeze us in an endorphin fueled doom spiral where we aren’t thin enough or rich enough. We can never get enough likes. This generation will marry later, have children later, and carry student loans on their backs like loads of bricks. They are more anxious, more lonely, and more accomplished than any previous generation.
The winds have brought the graduate back to the Island That Time Forgot, with its ice cream, beaches, and cobblestones. He knocks about in his room. His former tribe has ridden on the winds to other meadows and other lawns. He grieves them. I feel the same: I miss the community of my college, the late nights on the floor of Hepburn, the mornings in Voter Hall, the drives along the shore of Lake Champlain, deafened by frogs. Forty years and thousands of miles later, I still drink in the early morning orange juice and the Dvorak of an early summer morning in Vermont.
For all of the timeless illusions of Nantucket, from the cobblestones to the waves, we live in the sandy velocity of sun and soil. Our charge, and the ones for our children, are not to freeze in the past but to creep into the future. Our roots will dig deep, our branches will spread, and our flowers, iridescent and stinky, spread our scent into the wind. We don’t live for yesterday, but for tomorrow.
