Celebrating Iconic Crafts
by Eleni SinnisThe Nantucket Historical Association is welcoming visitors back to the Hadwen House at 96 Main Street. For the 2023 season, the historic property will feature several exhibitions, including one focused on Nantucket Lightship Baskets and exhibits highlighting the NHA’s decorative arts and map collections. Niles Parker, NHA’s Gosnell Executive Director says, “Hadwen House is becoming a great space for the NHA to explore more of the island’s important history in addition to the stories we tell at the Whaling Museum.”
The exhibit Nantucket Lightship Baskets traces the development of Nantucket Lightship Baskets from their 19th-century origins to the diverse traditional and experimental forms being created by the island’s weavers today. It highlights individual makers across time and features both the José Reyes workshop and a special case displaying the many basket purse designs Reyes invented before settling on the iconic form still prized by collectors today. The NHA even provides tutorials to exhibit visitors. Parker says: “We are eager to highlight this iconic craft, show its evolution on the island, and emphasize that it very much remains a vibrant art form today.”
Also in the Hadwen House, visitors will be able to see pieces from the Decorative Arts collection of the NHA, including fine art and furniture, tall clocks, ceramics, an eclectic display of curiously carved artifacts. Hadwen House is also hosting the exhibit Visions of Nantucket: Cottage Cities that Never Were, which presents a selection of late 19th-century maps designed to promote a new (at the time) form of residential development: the cottage city.
The Hadwen House is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm until October 9. Additionally, tickets are now on sale at nha.org for the NHA’s annual summer fundraiser, Baskets & Bubbly, which supports the island craft of Nantucket Lightship Baskets with a Celebration Under the Whale at the Whaling Museum on Sunday, July 16, from 5 to 7 pm. The event will also include online auction that will run from July 10-17, providing bidders with the exclusive opportunity to bid on baskets and basket-related items.

by Steve “Tuna” Tornovish“If you’re not real smart, you need smart friends.” I think this quote comes from Albert Einstein. Or maybe Yogi Berra. Who knows—maybe I said it. Regardless, there’s a lot of truth to this, right? Expert advice is a really great way to go when you want to get a question answered. And I am fortunate enough to have a bunch of smart friends, particularly when the questions involve fishing for striped bass. So it seemed like exactly the right time to ask them a bass fishing question. The question was as follows...
You’re taking a friend out beach fishing for two hours at sunset. They are relatively inexperienced but really want to catch a striped bass. You can give them a rod / reel with one lure and show them how to use it. What lure are you putting on for them and what are you telling them? Needless to say, live bait is not an option.
This text went out to about a dozen of my favorite striped bass fishermen. Almost every one of them responded in short order that the question was inherently unfair. Two-time winner of the Fall Classic fishing tournament Rafael Osona summed up the responses when he said this: “With any question like this, there's so many variables to consider when choosing a lure. The shoreline, water depth, wind, is it weedy, etc.” Exactly, Raf: the question was intentionally vague. And because of this, you’ve just provided a glimpse into the mind of an expert bass fisherman. Where you are fishing, what kind of beach structure are you fishing around, what is the wind doing, what is the tide—all of these are significant items on the decision matrix. But my friends were urged to give answers to the question as presented. And answer they did, in a bunch of very insightful ways.
Dr. Matt Roberts chimed in: “Fun question! I think sunset on the north shore, giving them a Sluggo, telling them to reel slowly. And then, when they think they're reeling slow, reel even slower! Twitch, twitch every 5 to 10 seconds.” Very excellent advice from our favorite dentist, indeed!
So let’s break this down, starting with the lure selection. A Sluggo is a soft plastic bait that is pre-rigged with two single in-line hooks molded into the body.

We the People
by Robert P. BarsantiThe Least Terns are hatching. Residents of the Endangered Species List, the Least Terns get special fencing, some observers, and the path to Great Point blocked. The birds are delicate and fragile things that swoop and dart in constellations over the water. It happens every year. Drivers in Ford 150s, in Expeditions, and in Discoveries find themselves flummoxed at the gatehouse in Wauwinet when someone does not know Who-I-Am. That happens every year, too.
For as much as the Connecticut Fishermen and the New York Dads would like to complain, the birds are protected by federal law. The men’s joy at being indulgent hosts or even hungry fisherman fades in front of the legal jeopardy driving over (or near) those birds would bring. At a more basic level, the surfcasting masters and barbecue ninjas have been told and notified. Their worst instincts have been identified.
We don’t live in a world where the Trustees could just put up a sign and trust that that the Greater Beach Driving Public could just let it go. Out here, on this island, is a man who paid $80,000 for a car just so he could have the thrill of driving the five or so miles over deep sand ruts. If his right to drive interferes with the terns privileges, that conflict is unfortunate.
American society seats each of us in a driver’s seat, behind a windshield, to a Taylor Swift soundtrack. Sixty percent of Americans feel lonely consistently—we feel isolated, disconnected, and ignored. Then we go driving. With the windows up, the air conditioning on, and the Spotify algorithm finding the perfect Smashmouth song for this moment, we wonder why we are so alone.
I used to think that car stupidity was a problem for this time of year, before people became used to the strange culture of Nantucket. Nantucket was not designed for the mass of people who arrive in early July. The cell phone circuits clog, the water pressure drops, and previously idle intersections stack up with cars. Greed, bad planning, and Yankee stubbornness have created jammed parking lots and slow-moving automotive clots. Had we built the island with an eye towards tourism, as Disney World was, we would have color-coded parking areas, open topped courtesy shuttles, and cartoon characters picking up the trash from Main Street. Perhaps if the billionaires can continue to amass and curate the island, they can improve the experience.
However, the summer visitors come here for shorter and shorter periods. Months became weeks became days became a weekend. They don’t have time to learn about the island before they are back on the highway. They never learn consideration.
On mainland America, we live as we drive. There are lanes, there are signs, there are rules. As long as you are in the correct lane in that eight-lane road, no horns will honk and no emotions will rise. The car behind us will never see us again; they may remember our bumper stickers for a few seconds, then the light will change and we will drive into the Piggly Wiggly parking lot and they will drive on to their destiny.
Nantucket is different; it is too small. Even in July, when AirBnB has stuffed vacationers into garages and attics, we don’t have enough cars to allow anonymity. If you drunkenly sideswipe five cars on Federal Street, you will probably be found soon. And after that, every time you go to the grocery store, someone will offer you driving lessons or give you the name of a mechanic who could install a big rubber belt around your car. All of your anonymity ends at the body shop.
So, you can’t drive about Nantucket with the impunity you could in Newton. The best answer is not to turn the music up, wear sunglasses, and just keep driving. Instead, you should roll your window down, stick your arm out, and prepare to wave.

Rare Chance to Own a Part of Island History
For nearly two centuries, Nantucket Lightship Baskets have been a distinctive island craft. Lightship Baskets have a very particular style: they are woven with cane around molds and have solid wood bases and rattan staves.
From the earliest simple but beautifully woven baskets made during the 1800s by crews on the Lightships anchored around Nantucket, the craft evolved to use ivory and ebony knobs and ornamental decorations such as carvings and scrimshaw. Modern lightship basket techniques have been used in making many varieties and sizes of baskets, as well as other items including mirrors, handbags, tabletops, trays, bracelets, hair clasps, jewelry, and ornaments.
Judi Hill has long admired expertly made lightship baskets, collecting them herself and selling both antique and modern baskets in the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40

New Locations for an Island Favorite
The J. Butler Collection is celebrating its 25th summer season on Nantucket and is excited to announce two new downtown locations for 2023!
You’ll find this favorite boutique home design shop at 3 Old North Wharf within East End Gallery, with additional specialty pieces in a pop-up location inside Kit Noble Fine Art at Zero India Street (across from the Atheneum). The art in East End Gallery and Kit Noble’s photographs allow clients to envision how complete rooms can look.
Each summer interior designer Jeffrey B. Haines, owner of design studio Butler’s of Far Hills in New Jersey, brings his unique pieces—classic with modern sensibilities—to Nantucket Island for The J. Butler Collection. This season’s collection is defined by selective seating pieces, fine antiques, vintage and antique rugs, as well as custom lamps and upholstery.
In collaboration with the East End Gallery, the shop will feature rotating favorites from the gallery. Bringing gallery owner Karen Pelrine’s eye for artistic talent and exceptional custom framing together with interior designer Jeff Haines’ unique attention to detail and eye for one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, this summer’s collection is sure be a special shopping experience and resource for interior designers on the Old North Wharf.
Look for the J. Butler sign just off Easy Street, a few steps down the crushed shell lane that is Old North Wharf. This quaint cottage shop on the wharf is a perfect place to casually speak with designer Jeff Haines about your projects onor off-island. He’s always happy to help you find the perfect piece!

Monsters of the Deep
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationIn the early 2000s, I was sampling vegetation in the Middle Moors for a joint project between the Nantucket Conservation Association and Massachusetts Audubon. It was a hot summer with long days sampling transects through the dense brush. Ticks, poison ivy, thorns, and dehydration were my worst enemies. One day I thought I was hallucinating from lack of water when I saw a relatively small fluffy bunny nibbling vegetation in front of me. It wasn’t scared of me and just went about eating as if it was pleased to see me. This wasn’t the common Eastern Cottontail ubiquitous on Nantucket. This bunny was chocolate-colored with long fur and floppy ears.
Fortunately for me, my co-worker also saw the bunny. I paused, drank some water, and we watched it for a bit before it hopped off into the underbrush. What we were facing wasn’t a recently lost bunny: the habit of the animal, the distance we were from any house, road, or even path, led us to believe this was a released pet that had been living off the land for some time. This little chocolate bunny was fending for himself in the “wilds” of the Middle Moors. This cute mirage makes a funny story when telling “tales from the field.” However, released pets can be a serious wildlife problem and potentially cause harm to the habitat and to other animal species. One lone bunny isn’t necessarily a problem: chances are it became a meal for a hungry raptor at some point, especially being slow and unafraid. But the story of released pets doesn’t end with one bunny. There are many examples around the island with potentially greater impact.
Last week many of us saw a photo making the rounds on Nantucket social media of Tue Nielsen holding a huge fish—a trophy for our fresh water for sure. The species? A massive koi fish. No, koi aren’t native nor are they meant to be in our great ponds. But there they still are. Koi fish are colorful, ornamental versions of the common carp. Though carp domestication is believed to have begun in China as far back as the 4th century, modern Japanese koi are believed to date back to early 19th-century Japan where wild, colorful carp were caught, kept, and bred by rice farmers. There is still disagreement about genetic distinction and sub-species versus full species. But one thing is for sure, these koi don’t belong in Miacomet Pond.

Save Us from the Kids
Part I: Island Children Running Rampant
by James GriederNantucket has been described as a great place to raise your children, but not a great place to grow up. The arrival of the internet and high-speed ferries has blurred the distinction—now that we have good pizza and can get more than three(ish) TV channels—but the reason is the same even if the way it’s experienced is not: Nantucket is still seen as a relatively safe, quiet (read by youth as boring) place to raise a family. But that was not always the case here. There was a time when our island community felt the need not to protect its children but to be protected from them.
The August 12, 1857 edition of the Inquirer and Mirror contains a column titled “Nantucket Facts” from the 1855 Massachusetts census that provides a snapshot of the town’s population at that time. “The first fact is, that contrary to the general supposition, there are 498 more males than females on Nantucket, males 4,281, females 3,783. Here is a handsome surplus of males, which puts a quietus to the popular belief that the females are in the majority here...” The numbers provided number at 2, 427 those age five to twenty.
The author goes on to acknowledge that many of the men who technically resided in Nantucket were in fact half a world away “earning nests for the young robins who they are looking forward to shipping as mates on the voyage of life.” So although the majority of the population fell into the 20- to 40-years-old range, a sizeable percentage of the male residents would have been absent, leaving small children and teenagers as the dominant age group, with retired, elderly whaling captains—and middle-aged newspaper editors—decidedly in the minority. The married women in the 20- to 40-years-old range would have been left to run a household and parent as best they could, waiting for their “robins” to return to the nest, which could take years, with average length of a whaling voyage being two to four years.
If they ever did return, that is—there was always the chance that their husband or beau would be injured or killed whaling, or shipwrecked, or would just disappear at sea, never to be heard from again.
Adventure Sails for Youth
Egan Maritime Institute is again partnering with Tall Ship Lynx this year to bring on-the-water experiences to Nantucket students, along with public programs during the summer season that welcome visitors and residents.
The Tall Ship Lynx is an educational sailing vessel dedicated to hands-on educational programs that teach the history of America’s struggle to preserve its independence, with close attention to the maritime challenges during the War of 1812. Thise replica Privateer Schooner employs a comprehensive, interactive program designed to enrich personal achievement through teamwork and the discipline of sailing.
This year, EMI and captain and crew on the Lynx are offering Tall Ship Adventure Sails: day-long expeditions for ages 12 to 17 that offer in-depth sailing experiences. Sailors will board the Lynx in the morning and take on the role of crew members for a sailing tour designed to teach traditional tall ship sailing techniques. Participants learn all the ship's parts and work directly with professional sailors to gain foundational skills in marlinspike seamanship and build their teamwork and leadership skills.
As an organization, Egan Maritime Institute is strategically working to expand our impact within the Nantucket community and provide accessible on-the water experiences for all to enjoy. “We believe that programming aboard the Lynx is a tool to help young Nantucketers learn to work together, to understand and respect their island environment, and, above all, to offer children an opportunity to test their curiosity and courage by stepping out and trying new things” states EMI’s Executive Director Carlisle Jensen.
This program is modeled after Egan Maritime Institute’s Sea of Opportunities Student Mariner Sails. Since 2014, Egan Maritime has sent more than 145 Nantucket students aboard the Tall Ship Lynx for multi-day educational adventures. In addition to their experiential, teaching component, the sails have proven to be a pivotal experience for all who participate. The students begin their journey as outsiders and begin to come together as a team while under sail. “Through the process you see growth,” shared Captain Don Peacock of the Tall Ship Lynx “This is our time to offer personal development and self-discovery to these kids on the voyages. We are making an impact.”

review the AAN members submissions and decide which art will be displayed,” said AAN artistic director Bobby Frazier. “With their varied backgrounds, it will be wonderful to see that process and have them share their input and thoughts as they chose pieces,” added Frazier. From 5 to 7 pm on opening day, the Jurors will offer a special presentation about their selection process for this exhibition and discuss their own art techniques and styles.
Canadian American artist Jackie Reeves was raised in Montreal and studied design art at Concordia University. She uses mixed media to bring together figurative and abstract elements in her art. Reeves also co-founded the Plymouth Community Art Center. She works out of the Old Schoolhouse Studios in Barnstable Village and lives with her family in Sandwich, MA.
T. Allen Lawson studied drawing and portraiture at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. A lifelong student, his dedication to his profession is always evolving as his interests and influences continue to challenge him. As he views the world around him, his art strives to build layers and textures with pigment to create abstract and depth. He lives in Wyoming and Maine.
Nantucket Envisioned will be on display in AAN’s Big Gallery through August 7. On the second floor of the Thomas Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf, the building was home to AAN’s Kenneth Taylor Galleries from 1945 to 1988.
Concurrently, AAN’s Summer Small Works exhibition in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street continues until July 17.
On Saturday, July 1, from 9 am to 2 pm, AAN artist members will display their work and chat with visitors to the annual Sidewalk Art Show in the Atheneum Garden, 1 India Street. This is a beloved tradition that dates back to 1930 on Nantucket. A variety of art styles and mediums will be included in this outdoor display: painters, ceramicists, textile artists, and more often participate.
In case of inclement weather, the rain date for the AAN Sidewalk Art Show is Sunday, July 2. A second AAN Sidewalk Art Show is planned for August 5.

Rules work in an anonymous society. Out here, where everyone knows your name, consideration makes everything work.
We know you. We remember the guy who didn’t tip, the woman who shot through Five Corners, the Dad who left their flashers on in the handicapped slot so he could pick up another bottle of Patron for the boat. We will see you again, and we will remember. Your car will not hide you. Your life will work better if you figure out that Nantucket is a small place, no matter how long the line of traffic is.
In addition to the return of the terns and the striped bass, July brings back the Downyflake Dance. Every ten minutes, some poor car finds itself stuck where it can’t go forward, it can’t park, and it can’t go backwards. Waze and the Spotify algorithm has no solution to this. Instead, the Master of the Universe $80,000 SUV will need to have open windows, a waving hand, and consideration. You can only get out of the lot if the twenty year old Toyota Camry lets you. You have to be nice.
I feel some pity for the Masters of the Universe who picked up a seven million dollar investment with the understanding that the velvet ropes of the mainland would continue to shelter them on our over-crowded and over-loved island. You may have the corner office, you may have bankrupted Peru, you may own the course record, but you still have to wait in line for Morning Buns and Downyflake Donuts. We know who you are. The buns will be ready in a half hour.
The Fourth of July corrects us. Our founding document does not begin “I, the rich man,” but declares “We the people.” On the Fourth, the four-wheel personal extensions of wealth, privilege, and taste (with all of the rights and privileges appertaining thereto) are banned from downtown. If you want to wander the cobblestones, dunk a kid, and pose for a selfie, you can’t do it in a well-armored bubble of air-conditioning and your personal soundtrack. You are going to have to bounce and jostle with the rest of “We the People,” even if you do pay them.
Nantucket is a much better place when it is populated by terns and plovers that dart, zip, and crest over the cliffs and waves. With consideration and a wave, we are the island we like to think we are. And, if you are lucky, someone will wave you through.

Straight Wharf. This season she was asked by several clients to sell vintage baskets from their private collections. It’s a rare opportunity to see and to purchase lightship baskets by makers and by weavers whose work is not often available. There is a difference between “weavers” and “makers,” Judi explained. “Bill Sevrens, Paul Willer, S.P. Boyer, Ferdinand Sylvaro were true basket makers. They made all their own components: the molds, the bases, the staves, rims, and knobs...everything.” Weavers use mostly supplied components. One is not inferior to the other—weavers make exquisite baskets and Nantucket Lightship Baskets by both makers and weavers are in the G.S. Hill Gallery, Judi explained, “but “to me, there’s a difference.”
Alongside the large selection of vintage Nantucket Lightship Baskets, Judi also has a beautiful array by contemporary weavers, including Karen Palmer, Maggie Silva, John Kaminski, and astronaut Dan Bursch. Among the modern baskets she has on display for sale are trays with gorgeous inlay, open baskets with carved bottoms, classic Friendship Baskets with scrimshaw tops, nests, cross-body bags with leather straps, cuffs and bracelets, small baskets to hold watches and rings, and even exquisite miniatures that make treasured Christmas tree ornaments.
For more than four decades, the G.S. Hill Gallery has offered the original work of painter Gregory S. Hill, whose art is in many collections around the world. In addition, they sell many unique Nantucket gifts and are the exclusive location for jewelry by the Nantucket Pearl Company.
This week, the G.S. Hill Gallery is also holding a July Fourth raffle. Stop by 40 Straight Wharf to enter—no purchase is necessary, and the prize is one of island artist Greg Hill’s exquisite miniature original oil paintings, complete with a tiny display easel. G.S. Hill Gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.
•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

When retrieved slowly, the lure falls in a hypnotic manner that resembles a wounded baitfish. The slight twitch of the rod tip that Matt describes will cause the Sluggo to jump up and then decend again. Sluggos are a hard lure to fish incorrectly. They’re best fished in shallow water like the north shore as Matt stipulated. Striped bass love them some Sluggo! As for the downside of using this soft bait, it’s that Sluggos tend to be the ultimate bluefish detectors. Bluefish bite the tails off of their dinner and Sluggos are not built to withstand such savagery. This leads directly to many of us having our truck beds filled with half eaten Sluggos.
Many of my south shore warriors preferred hard plastic lures like the Diawa SP Minnow or the Joe Baggs Swarter for the beginners, including James Hatton, Chuck Duce and John Colton. Those guys really know their stuff. Here’s what Chuck Duce had to say: “Put on an SP Minnow and have them throw it straight out. Reel it in really slow, all the way to your feet. This will teach a beginner to use the swimming lure to understand what the water is doing. Figure out water movement first and then you can figure out where the bait will hold up. This is for in the surf with points and outer bars. Not in the harbor. Tough question to answer!”
Chuck has imparted a lot of wisdom in one little text here. He has the beginner anglers casting straight out in front of them. Beginners need to develop basics, particularly for casting. But it also hints that the experts are generally not casting out straight in front
of them. Experienced fishermen are often targeting the deep troughs that run parallel to the beach, so their casts are going to be at an angle much less than the 90 degree that Chuck prescribed for the beginner.
“Reel it in really slow, all the way to your feet.” Many south shore fish are caught right in the wash. Beginners miss a lot of fish by pulling the lure quickly through the last part of that crucial strike zone. “Figure out water movement first, and then you can figure out where the bait will hold up.” Chuck is looking for a deeper section of water where bigger fish will sit and wait to ambush the baitfish. Yeah, this is why Chuck Duce catches a ton of big fish.
My main striped bass fishing partner is Dale Gary. He echoed a lot of what Chuck said, only prescribing a black Joe Baggs Swarter as his main lure for the beginner. “The best tip I can give is to try to get a feel for what your lure is doing as you’re bringing it in.” Dale knows that if he can visualize the way his lure is performing in the water, he’s going to have much more success. It’s a zen-like concept, perhaps, but fishing for striped bass, particularly at night, requires a developed feel. When Dale is dialed in with a lure, he puts a lot of fish on the beach. Ask me how I know—Dale often fishes right beside me and catches way more bass. It’s pretty frustrating!
The funniest response that I received from these questions came from Dr. Greg Chotkowski. He didn’t type a single word. No, Greg’s responses were three consecutive pictures of striped bass choking on bucktail jigs. The bucktail is one of the oldest and most low-tech lures ever developed. It’s certainly deadly to striped bass when in Greg’s hands, however! Stand by for a future column dedicated to this old-school technique!
Dave Small and Dave Bold are my two perennial Spring Sea Run Opener teammates (Go Team Irrelevant Irredeemables!). They both favored the Hogy paddletail lure. Mr. Bold said this: “For a first timer, I would put on a Hogy paddle tail, either white or bunker colored, weight and size appropriate for the wind and current conditions (my go-to is the 2oz size). A Hogy is easy to cast and retrieve for a newbie. Tell them not to worry about trying to cast a long way, but rather focus on a nice even retrieve, and don't give up till the lure comes out of the water. Lots of fish hit right at the lip so be ready for it all the way to the end of the retrieve.” Hey now, we’ve heard that advice somewhere before, right?
One thing that I found very interesting about this question was that both Dan Holmes and Tammy King, my two fellow beach guides, gave me almost the exact same answer: an amber colored top water lure. Dan said this: “I would go with an Island X Hellfire 180 (but I might change my mind once I get some more time on the Sidewinder XL though) and recommend working it with a variety of actions. Intermittent pauses and some twitching. If it doesn’t do the trick, use a steady, faster retrieval with the rod tip up. The floating version of this lure offers a good variety on ways to work the lure to fit the scenario, not to mention great casting range.”
My brother Billy selected both of those fine Island X products, citing the fact that they are all equipped with single hooks as opposed to the treble hooks that most minnow-style plugs utilize. Joe Uva, the best beach fisherman on Martha’s Vineyard (you know, that other island) liked the surface lure as well. “I would put on a Spook-type (surface) lure. It’s a great time of year to fish that way and the experience of a good top water bite will only ensure that they would be hooked for life! A steady retrieve while popping the rod tip is all that is needed to make these lures work their magic. If a fish goes after the plug, keep working it until the rod comes tight and then set the hook.”
So what’s the main thing that all of this has taught us? It seems clear—a wide variety of lures will produce if you present them properly. When fishing for striped bass, fish slowly. And if nothing else, get out there and give it a try!

Nielsen found out about the koi from James Hatton, who took him out and “showed him the ropes” when it came to the koi in Miacomet. According to local legend and knowledge from neighbors living in the Miacomet area, there was a terrible three-day rainstorm about 30 years ago. A koi pond at a house up on the hill (not to be named) above Miacomet Pond flooded due to the large amount of rain. Several of the fish got out of the pond and rolled or swam down the hill, and they’ve been in the pond ever since. One fisherman said there were five of them last time he checked—30 to 40 pounds each—and that they are almost always together. Monsters of the deep for sure! Some people say there are about 15 and one islander said he thought there were up to 30 fish! One thing is certain: they are reproducing and flourishing. Take a kayak out on Miacomet, and you may be “greeted” by some huge koi. While fun on the rod, for sure, they aren’t for eating in my book. Be careful as well: this time of year Miacomet has been having harmful algal blooms.
So what’s the problem with the koi fish? Koi and goldfish are two commonly released pets in natural water bodies around the country. Koi grow and reproduce rapidly and can survive pretty low temperatures. They also have a voracious appetite. Koi will eat anything, including plants and fish eggs. They dig along the pond bottom and edges, uprooting plants and fighting with native fish for food. As a result, when released into natural water bodies like our local ponds, they can quickly demolish all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend on. And once these invasive species are in a water body, they are not easy to remove. So please, do not release unwanted fish into our ponds. Once you introduce something into a new environment, it can have serious ecological consequences.
Along with koi and other aquarium fish come aquarium plants. Dumping out aquariums is the number one way that invasive aquatic plants are introduced to an area. The same small pond that accidentally released the koi all those years ago was the source for a relatively new invasive species for Nantucket—parrot feather. This aquarium plant is native to South America and is in a small pond that feeds into Miacomet. The Nantucket Land Bank has been working for years on the management of the population, working to eradicate it before it spreads into the larger pond. It is considered an ecological threat to ponds because of its tendency to grow in dense mats, clogging waterbodies and making them nearly impassible. It can also be es-

pecially hard to treat with herbicides due to its waxy cuticle surface, and it’s not ideal to pick by hand because of how easily it spreads. The Land Bank has been doing a great job at preventing the further spread of parrot feather, but prevention is the key. Please don’t dump aquarium tanks into our ponds!
Aside from fish and plants, turtles also have a reputation for surviving as released pets. Red-eared sliders, freshwater turtles native to south and central US, are causing environmental problems in water bodies across the globe. They are easy to identify by their distinctive red stripe on the side of the head and are very popular pet turtles for their size (6-10 inches as adults) and tolerance of many conditions. They can be very long-lived (up to 40 years) and, thus, often get released when someone gets tired of taking are of them or they get beyond the cute “small turtle” phase. Red-eared sliders are considered one of the worst invasive species in the world by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Many countries have banned their sale and importation. They can grow larger when out of captivity and are aggressive in feeding behavior, out-competing with our native painted and spotted turtles for food. Red-eared sliders have well-established populations throughout the state and have been found here and there on Nantucket. If you see invasive animals, please email info@llnf.org (the Linda Loring Nature Foundation), and we will get you to the right person.
There are other non-native pets released into the wild either purposefully or accidentally. So keep an eye out! The worst offender, by far, on Nantucket, however are feral cats. Former pets or un-owned felines, these cats now have multiple generations living around our island. Sure, there is plenty of food for them, but at what cost? Feral cats have been implicated as a cause or contributor to the extinction of 33 species of bird, reptile, and mammal species on islands world-wide. We have rare ground-nesting bird species on Nantucket that do well on-island because of the lack of predators. Cats have been responsible locally for shorebird deaths (adults and chicks) as well as other birds and small mammals. We won’t solve this issue overnight. We love our pets, and cats are a difficult one to consider as a wild animal. The best thing we can do right now is to keep our pet cats indoors. That will help alleviate the problem or at least not make it worse.
What to do about unwanted pets? The best advice is simple, please don’t release a household pet of any sort in to the wild. If you’re having trouble caring for your pet, try to rehome it. We suggest reaching out to the community via social media for others who may be interested or check in with Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals (NISHA) about the local options for rehoming. Prevention is the easiest and best way to protect our diverse native flora and fauna!
Save Us from the Kids
Nantucket has a long, proud tradition of women running things on-island while their men were away, but for those families with a husband at sea, it must have been challenging to eke out a living. “Nantucket Facts” notes that “the greatest number of families to a given number of dwellings is in Nantucket, 1,684 families in 1,114 dwellings. It has long been the custom here for persons with small families, who own houses, to let the upper portion of their dwellings.” The author hastens to distance the practice from the degenerate tenements of the city, noting because Nantucketers are “cozy and sociable” and “not as ‘spacious’ as some others,” that “even under one roof, two families can dwell together in harmony, without the dire mishap of staining their nobility.”
Living in crowded conditions, raising children as a single parent with the constant fear of economic disaster looming in the background, would only exacerbate any underlying prexisting health conditions, and coupled with the desperate circumstances on Nantucket following the Great Fire of 1846 that hollowed out the downtown area where most people lived and worked, it’s perhaps not surprising that mental illness, self-harm, and drug abuse increased, even if usually referred to more obliquely than in the following segment printed in the April 10, 1852 edition of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror (with a solution we’d find shocking today):
“People are so low-spirited, not because they have ‘got trouble,’ but because they haven’t. An old maid with ‘nothing to worry her,’ will be as melancholy as dyspepsia—marry her, however, and make her the mother of four romping boys, and she will be as cheerful as sunshine. It is very seldom that hard-working people commit suicide—suicides being one of the accompaniments of soft hands and indolence. The best thing a girl can do for an oppressed mind is to take a husband.—Marriage gives rise to a family—while the cares of a family give rise to so many other duties, that mothers have ‘no possible time’ to think of either laudanum or ennui. Try it.”
Cramped living quarters and absent or otherwise occupied parents meant that children inevitably spent much of their time out-of-doors when not in school, roaming from the outskirts of downtown to the beaches of the harbor. We have an account of this period from Joseph E.C. Farnham (1849-1933) who wrote about his experi-
from page 12 continued on page 25
ences growing up on Nantucket as the whaling economy went into decline. His mother, Farnham Sr.’s wife died unexpectedly in 1835, leaving the distraught husband with three children under six years of age. Within a year he wed a local girl, Lydia Hussey Parker, who added nine more children of her own to the family. All fourteen of the Farnhams lived in a fairly typical Nantucket house on the corner of Lyons Lane in town.
“Our mothers,” Farnham wrote, “their time needed for home duties, passed the care of us little children” to an outside agency for assistance. Young Joseph Farnham’s first experience with school on Nantucket was attending what was known as a “Cent School,” a kind of nursey school or kindergarten. It was run by two elderly sisters, Mary Eliza and Nancy B. Swain, who had a reputation for treating their young charges with kindness and patience.
Graduating from the Cent School, he spent the next several years attending the Old South School Building, located in what is now an empty lot on Orange Street, before moving to the North Grammar School on Academy Hill. Teachers there all resorted to the switch for discipline, although with varying degrees of severity. Farnham—who went on to be superintendent of schools in East Providence, RI—did not fault them for their efforts, given that the rambunctious nature of the children was to be expected, but did require a firm hand to tame. “Discipline and right control of the volcanic, dynamic explosion incident to and liable at any time to come from within the boy, is what should consistently govern the elder in dealing with such a nature.”
Once school was out, local children were able to give expression to their dynamic natures, often to the consternation of the residents in the area. “Neighbors, pestered by our mischevious and diabolical pranks, called us, oh, how profanely, that ‘gang of boys.’ ” Farnham insisted that they were not a malevolent force, however, but rather merely “a vigorous if not irrepressible set.” “We made matters lively; albeit we were not vicious, yet when we were out on our own unrestrained will there surely was something doing all the time.”
The town was divided between the “North-Shorers”—north of Main Street—who usually attended Academy Hill, and the “New-Towners” that lay to the south of that line. Farnham wrote that there were always rumors going around that one side or the other was crossing over to fight their rivals, but nothing much ever came of it. He ran with a gaggle of boys led by a ringleader named “Gilp” Swain, who always managed to be the first one to slip away when trouble occurred, only to show up shortly after to innocently ask what was going on.
Featured Restaurant: Brotherhood of Thieves You’re Sure to Come Back for More!
by Suzanne Dauband bottle (plus a few magnums), and more than a dozen specialty cocktails. Their Madaket Mule is refreshingly crisp and fizzy, perfect for summertime, and we loved their Whaleship Essex, with orange blossom honey and lemon drifting through Triple Eight’s Nor’easter Bourbon, which earned silver distinction in the 2023 International Wines & Spirits Competition.
When you dine at The Brotherhood of Thieves, come hungry: portions are generous, and you won’t want to skip any courses!
Sushi here is prepared with great attention to detail and beautifully presented. So much more than just an afterthought among pub choices: there’s an entire menu devoted to it, with traditional and innovative selections. There is sparkling fresh sashimi and nigiri; classic rolls like California, Shrimp Tempura, and Dynamite; and an enticing variety of specialty rolls like the Bulgogi Roll and the Surf’n Turf Roll Endless Summer is an apt name for the very fresh tuna with
As far back as we can remember (and Yesterday’s Island goes back more than half a century), The Brotherhood of Thieves has been a local favorite. It first opened as a pub in 1972. Island residents and visitors have dined on burgers, fresh fish, curly fries, cheese plates, and beer in The Brotherhood spring, summer, and fall ever since, except for a pause during 2021, when we all feared this island landmark had closed for good.
Resurrected in 2022 by a new team, The Brotherhood of Thieves is now a fun mix of traditional and new. With four dining concepts on three levels, there’s something to please every taste. On the lower level is their 1840s Whaling Bar and Tavern, modeled very much like the classic Brotherhood we all knew and loved. Upstairs is the Cisco Surfers’ Kitchen and Bar, serving sushi, burgers, salads, nachos piled high, and more, with live music weekends. The Notch Whiskey Bar is tucked into the front of the second floor, with the upscale ambiance of a private club and a stellar selection of spirits. Their outside patio has a Cisco Brewers vibe with a “secret” bar and tables in a relaxing and pretty garden setting.
The Brotherhood bars have an international selection of beers—including, of course, Cisco favorites on draft—along with wines by the glass, half-bottle,
crab stick, crisp cucumber, and creamy avocado. Overtop are colorful drapes of pink tuna and green avocado adorned by drizzles of eel sauce and spicy mayo. It’s easy to understand why the Tornado Roll is so popular, with its shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat enveloped in thin slices potato and soy paper deep fried for a delightful crunch. The Brotherhood’s sushi rolls are larger than most, so plan on sharing.
For a lighter start, try the Tuna Tostada. This is a tasty plate of crisp taro chips topped with tender diced bluefin, fresh from the ocean, along with chunks
of avocado and ginger-soy dressing.
If you only choose one appetizer, make it the Brotherhood’s scrumptious Boom Boom Shrimp. The shrimp are coated in a breading that becomes deliciously crunchy while the shrimp is cooked to succulent perfection. These two-bite morsels are tossed in a sweet sriracha sauce that has the ideal balance of flavors. The heat is mild but it builds, so if you devour the entire portion, you’ll want a cold Whale’s Tale pale ale from their menu of Cisco brews on draft.
During the hot days of summer, a hearty salad hits the spot. The Brotherhood offers a number of appealing choices. The summery Lobster Avocado Salad is everything you want in a New England picnic: lobster, grilled corn, avocado, and mango, all tossed in a chipotle-lime dressing. Our favorite salads are the Super Crunch and the Buffalo Chicken Caesar. The former is proteinrich with chicken breast and quinoa, with its delicious crunch coming from carrots, almonds, and tart green apple, all in an orange-sesame vinaigrette. There are plenty of moist chicken tenders bathed in sweet-spicy mango-buffalo sauce in the Buffalo Chicken Caesar. The crisp romaine that makes up this salad is dressed in a lemony Caesar and topped with grilled croutons and lots of freshly grated pecorino.
The Brotherhood is famous for their juicy burgers and their hot meal-size sandwiches, not to mention their crisp curly fries (another favorite from way back!). But we didn’t want to pass up the appealing dinner entrées. Fish & Chips is a coastal classic, and the Brotherhood does it just right. An enormous, flaky and moist cod filet enveloped in an impossibly light yet crunchy beer batter coating is served over a pile of their hot, salty curly fries. Sides of coleslaw, lemon wedges, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce complete the dish.
Grilled Swordfish Kebobs is another summery treat. Large chunks of moist and meaty swordfish threaded on wood skewers and grilled are served on a light salad of arugula, quinoa, artichokes, and grilled cauliflower. A pool of orange-red romesco sauce, as bright in flavor as it is in color, surrounds the entrée.
Our favorite main dish is the Brotherhood’s Chicken Milanese. Coated in a well-seasoned breading and panfried till crisply browned, the pounded chicken breast is succulent and fork-tender. It’s topped with a citrus aioli, blistered orange and red grape tomatoes, and a liberal dusting of pecorino romano. Nestled close is a salad of fresh greens lightly tossed in a lemony dressing.
If you’ve eaten too well (a real risk
here), consider ending your meal with an Espresso Martini shaken with Triple Eight’s delectable vanilla vodka. But it would be a shame to miss their summery Strawberry Shortcake, with warm house-made biscuits, ripe, red berries, vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream.
The Brotherhood’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae is another long-time favorite. Cooked to order and served warm in a cast iron skillet, the vanilla ice cream melts into molten pools of chocolate chips throughout the soft cookie.
If the thought of seven layers of rich, dark sponge divided by delectably creamy chocolate frosting helps you find room for dessert, then their Death By Chocolate is a sweet way to go. Still can’t find the room? Order it with extra forks and share!
Locals know the Brotherhood of Thieves is a rare find on Nantucket: fabulous food, luscious libations, friendly and accommodating staff, and prices that won’t break the bank. And they have so many menu choices, you’ll want to dine here again and again to taste every one!

Save Us from the Kids
from page 25
Not that there was much risk of getting caught in the first place—“civic discipline over us crowd of associated boys was extremely easy; it was well-nigh a joke. A policeman, such as he was, was entirely unknown to us.” Instead there was a man the kids called “the hooker,” of whom they had “no fear of him whatsoever”: if he ever had occasion to chase after them, “but slight sprinting on our part enabled us to elude him.” Their favorite spot to gather was then an open way (now closed) at the end of Fair Street, leading to Orange Street. From there, they would range about town—“we used to scale fences, encroach upon private yards, descend upon growing fruits, visit gardens for ripe tomatoes and melons…and in a variety of ways, I am sure, upon reflection, we were often a terror to peaceful residents.”
“There were other acts of boyish deviltry which I shall never forget,” wrote Farnham. On Silver Street, Daniel Dunham kept a grog shop, “where spiritous liquors were on tap, and it was a haunt of debauchery to many patrons.” One of those patrons was Daniel B. “Dan” Coffin, who lived in Madaket and would travel to town to conduct his business, then stop by the grog shop mid-afternoon for an extended visit. While he was inside, the boys would unsnap the end of the reins from the bit ring of the bridle and snap them into the rings of the hames. Dan would emerge some time later, “thorough mulled,” according to Farnham, and spend “a long time, because of his condition,” jerking on the reins, to no affect. “Then he would stagger down from the cart to investigate, fumble around, and finally get onto what he was up against. While readjusting matters, in his drunken stupor, he would heap incoherent profane anathemas on us boys, to our very great delight.”
Not all of Farnham’s youthful escapades seemed as innocent to him in retrospect. He states that some were, in the light of mature review, “not only unkind, but reprehensible.” But overall, he wrote, “our conduct was more thoughtlessly mischevious than it was intentionally wicked.” “We, then, young ‘kids,’ criminals? never; michevious? ever.”
Loitering downtown, they would make themselves sick trying to smoke the onecent cigars they “obtained” from “Cock” Olin’s shop on South Water Street, or tormenting the kindly Quaker named Mitchell who operated a general store in “the Lodge building” behind the Pacific Bank. Boys and girls would stop there for candy and school supplies, and from time to time “naughty boys, usually in pairs, would go
Souza’s Seafood
in for a purchase; one would engage the unsuspecting Edward” while the other got up to mischief. There was a large roll of string hanging from the ceiling that the owner would snip segments from to bundle up purchases, and the boy would grab the end of the string and run out the door and bolt up Fair Street or down Main, the owner standing their, nonplussed, as the spool rapidly unwound itself. “Wet line, Edward; wet line!” they would holler, in imitation of Nantucketers at sea harpooning whales. “Diabolical practice it surely was, yet it afforded appreciated merriment.”
From Farnham’s perspective, their boyhood hijinks were merely a lark, harming no one beyond causing temporary discomfort or unrest. Other residents of Nantucket were not so sanguine about their activities, or the effect it had on the tranquility and even the safety of the rest of the community. Headlines in island newspapers chronicle a steady increase in complaints about the behavior of the island’s youth throughout the period Farnham and his chums ran amok through town. As early as 1843, the Inquirer and Mirror reported examples of:
“BAD CONDUCT. A few days since, we gently protested against the disorderly acts and unnecessary noises with which our citizens are nightly annoyed…[and] which have increased several fold.”
“At the corners of some of our principal thoroughfares are still assembled gangs of boys and grown up youths who often insult passers-by in the most profane and obscene language, frequently attempting to trip, and, in many instances, bouncing forcibly against ladies, with the diabolical intent to bring them to the ground! Scores of mischievous children throng the streets, upsetting, destroying or stealing everything within their reach. A few evenings since, as some ladies and gentlemen were returning from a pleasant ride on horseback, they were followed by a troupe of urchins, who, at times, made the very welkin ring with their hooting and their yelling, to the great danger and inconvenience of the equestrians.
“Our ears are daily greeted with bitter imprecations and sad complaints uttered by individuals, for insults suffered, or peace invaded. Something must be done to crush this growing evil…if such enormities are suffered to be practiced, and the perpetrators to proceed in their wicked and lawless conduct, we shall soon be compelled to widen the limits of Quaise, and extend and fortify the West Prison-house.”
In the mid-1850s, there is an increase in calls in the newspapers for the town to crack down on the out-of-control youth”...
