Thought, Fun, & Songs: Weekend at the Library

Formed in 1834 as a private, membership organization, the Nantucket Atheneum has had eight librarians in its storied history, beginning with famous astronomer Maria Mitchell. Nantucket’s Great Fire of 1846 destroyed the former building and virtually all of the library’s collections. The Atheneum was rebuilt on the same site in 1847 and became a free public library in 1900. A significant renovation of the Atheneum building took place in 1996, including the addition of the Weezie Library for Children. Since becoming a free, public library, the Nantucket Atheneum has served our island community, promoting reading and education through books, educational activities, talks and lectures, concerts, and as a place to gather and learn together.

Summer is a brief magical window when new Atheneum members and friends can celebrate and support the mission of our island’s public library. With the majority of Atheneum funding provided from donations, the leadership decided to bring their major fundraiser home to India Street in a fun and exciting way. Weekend at the Library is the type of event that reflects the diversity of ages and in-

Swimming to Benefit On-Island Cancer Care

Swim Across America Nantucket kicks off its annual swim on Saturday, July 22nd at 8 am at Jetties Beach. The Swim is a summer highlight and a moving experience that is not to be missed. Year-round and summer residents are invited to join the Swim, which features a kid’s splash, a quarter-, half-, and one-mile distances. More than 400 swimmers and volunteers gather to meet (and possibly exceed) a goal to raise $600,000 to aid those who face cancer. As of press time, SSA Nantucket 2023 is more than three-quarters of the way to that goal. The money raised from this event is used to support Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s oncology and palliative care services.

Oncology and palliative care services are offered by the Nantucket Cottage Hospital largely due to the funds raised from the Swim. Oncologists come to our island from Massachusetts General Brigham, giving Nantucket patients an academic level of care in our rural community hospital, saving them time, stress, and money by not having to travel to the mainland. Palliative care services are procontinued on page 16

Countdown Is On Til August Blues

Blues music is about the realities of life. It expresses the ebb and flow of our human emotions, focusing mostly on the melancholy. When we’re sad, we have the blues. When we want to move away from that sadness, we can chase the blues away with music. Musically, it’s the famous 1-3-5 chord progression and a call and response lyric. But here on Nantucket, we’re often chasing the blues and trying our best to catch them. Never more so than this August, as the inaugural August Blues fishing tournament is ready to hit the Nantucket inshore fishing community.

August Chotkowski, known to so many of us as Augie, turns 27 years old on the third of August, 2023. Augie has a condition known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Not one to be bound down by his situation, Augie is always on the move in his motorized chair. His sister Honor puts it best: “DMD is a disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Despite the challenges presented by this condition, August continues to exhibit a spirit that is nothing short of inspiring. Look for him blazing a trail on the island’s bike paths, hanging with his pals at the local car wash, volunteering at Nantucket High School, or advocating for all people with disabilities as a member of the Commission on Disability. If you see him, don’t forget to honk and say hi!”

Dr. Greg Chotkowski, Augie’s father, is an avid Nantucket fisherman. He left New York City and opened his oral surgery practice on the island in 2019. In the spring of 2020, Greg participated in his first Spring Sea Run Opener tournament. He was, as they say, hooked. Fishing soon became therapy for Greg. He learned the various locations and methods necessary to catch striped bass and bluefish. In three short years, Greg has made himself one of the top Nantucket beach fishermen by putting in a lot of early morning hours on the island shores.

They’re Here... Portuguese Man-o-War

Last weekend, the first Portuguese Man-o-War of the season were spotted off of Cisco and Ladies Beaches. By the time this article is printed, I expect there will have been more sightings.

Known for its vibrant blue and pink colors, Portuguese Man-o-War has a gasfilled bag on top with tentacles that can extend up to 30 feet in length. During the day, the Man-o-War tentacles coil up, and appear thicker and shorter, but when they fish for prey at night, the tentacles extend out further, difficult to avoid for a swimmer.

Counter to popular belief, Portuguese Man-o-War are actually not a jellyfish as all, but rather a siphonophore. A siphonophore is unusual in that it is comprised of a colony of specialized, genetically identical individuals called zooids (sort of like clones) with various forms and functions, all working together as one. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), “Each of the four specialized parts of a man o’ war is responsible for a specific task, such as floating, capturing prey, feeding, and reproduction.” The pneumatophore is the balloon-like structure that is visible above the water line. It is filled with atmospheric gasses, primarily carbon monoxide. The dactylozooids are tentacles filled with venom-filled nematocysts. They sting predators and capture prey. The gastrozooids are tentacles that digest food and nutrients coming into the organism. Lastly, the gonozooids are tentacles that serve a reproductive function.

There is no propulsion device, such as fins, and the Man-o-War travel only by tides, currents, and winds. The pneumatophore (the balloon-like top part) can act like a small sail catching the breeze. This is why they are often found on the beach in the wrack line; they can’t really avoid the shore.

Their tentacles contain stinging microscopic capsules loaded with coiled, barbed tubes that deliver venom capable of paralyzing small fish and crustaceans. The sting isn’t deadly to people, but it packs a punch that can cause welts on exposed skin.

Portuguese Man-o-War are generally found in larger numbers further south. But they have a broad distribution and can be found in the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and even the Caribbean Sea. They typically live in tropical or subtropical climates in coastal and open-ocean environments. Occasionally, some colonies have even been observed in Irish and British coastal waters when they float on the currents or in the gusts of wind as far north as the Bay of Fundy in Canada. More sightings of the Portuguese Man-o-War in northern waters are anticipated as ocean warming continues.

On Nantucket, we typically have reports of a few each year, but the past couple of years we’ve seen greater numbers. Last year, several beaches were closed because of the “hazardous marine life” including Man-o-War and related jellyfish species.

Why so many all of a sudden? As ocean temperatures begin to rise on average due to global climate change, the Portuguese Man-o-War population has also begun to rise in number.

June 2023’s global average temperature was the hottest June on record and

Living in a Myth?

The Maine turnpike goes through a lot of nature. It wanders through hundreds of miles of pine trees, oaks, and salt water rivers. On our way south from Boothbay, with presents in the back, cupcakes in the front, Dar Williams on Spotify, and the air conditioning humming, we came across Momma Duck.

At seventy five miles an hour, we glanced at her as we swerved wide; she stood in the break down lane with one of her chicks. Three other chicks had been punctuated on the travel lane.

We didn’t speak for a half hour.

We could have said many things. The ducks had waddled into the way of progress. Nobody could make way for ducklings on the Maine Turnpike. We drove too fast. We hadn’t built animal pathways. Modern pickup trucks hid everything within the first five feet of the grill.

We could note that we are our cars. We live in a sealed little room, cooled and entertained with our favorite music, safe with seat belts and crash cages. Progress has moved us away from the humid and loud world, into our own private bubble. With cupcakes.

The less sensitive could point out that most ducklings don’t make it to adulthood. The world is full of predators and storm drains. Evolution requires such sacrifices. The surviving generation of ducks would learn to avoid highways and stick to the woods. Giving ducks names and personalities, as if they were dogs or babies just shows how unsophisticated our knowledge of the woods and fields are.

All true.

And yet at least three ducks died underneath the wheels of speeding cars. We felt their loss inside our speeding car.

On Nantucket, we don’t travel as fast as they do on the Maine Turnpike. As a community, we try to be on guard for turtles, ducks, or any other wildlife crossing the road. On our small island, we like to think of ourselves as protectors and stewards of the land. We have a Marine Mammal Stranding Team that will take those animals who found their way out of the life-giving water and direct them

A Grand Evening of Music on July 25

Baritone David Wolfe is the headline performer this week at Nantucket Musical Arts Society’s third concert of its stellar 2023 summer season. Wolfe will perform at 7 pm this Tuesday, July 25 in Saint Paul’s Church, 20 Fair Street, the Society’s new venue for its summer series, now in its 64th season.

He will be accompanied by Jonathan Gmeinder, a Chicago-based pianist and vocal coach who recently completed his second year as a studio artist and staff pianist at Houston Grand Opera.

“We are anticipating a grand evening of music, with David’s remarkable voice and Jonathan’s professional accompaniment,” said Eva-Maria Tausig, NMAS President. “They have prepared a program that will delight audiences of all ages.”

NMAS will also host the popular, free “Meet the Artist” event with the Atheneum, 1 India Street, at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 24. An informal, unscripted chat with Wolfe and Gmeinder will allow audience members to interact with them, ask questions, and explore their musical careers and future plans. Students and children especially are welcome.

A native of Shamokin, PA, Wolfe was a Grand Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s 2023 Eric and Dominique Laffont competition. He is currently an apprentice artist with Des Moines Metro Opera, where he is covering Moralés in Carmen, as well as joining the choruses of both Carmen and The Love for Three Oranges by Prokofiev.

Wolfe received his Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, continued on page 23

In addition to capturing details of extended objects like Earth’s moon, it also has the power to photograph objects not visible to the human eye, such as dim stars, nebulae, and galaxies. The Maria Mitchell Association’s Beginner's Astrophotography Workshop intends to give participants the foundations needed to take dramatic pictures of the dark skies above.

Have you ever wondered how photographers capture the breathtaking, vivid Milky Way skyscapes? MMA’s Artist-in-Residence Charity Grace Mofsen and MMA's Telescope Engineer and Astronomer, Gary Walker are offering a four-session course in Astrophotography. Nantucket boasts some of the darkest night skies in the Northeast: above us the cosmos certainly puts on a fabulous show.

In this workshop, students will photograph celestial objects and phenomena, starting with a cell phone and DSLR cameras, and then progress to the RC24-inch Telescope at the MMA Loines Observatory. Each class will build on the previous, and some homework will be assigned in between meetings to make the most of this course.

The first session will focus on an introduction to astrophotography. This will include a presentation of night shots taken around the island, as well as a demonstration of the equipment used to take such photos. The second session will be a trial run for amateur photographers who will work on camera setup, including manual settings, and practice shooting. The third session will consist of a con-

A physician who loves taking care of people and is known for his expertise, his outdoor hobbies, and his quirky sense of humor. And now Dr. Timothy Lepore has been chosen as this year's recipient of the prestigious Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award. This accolade, given by the Dreamland Foundation, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and selflessness in making Nantucket a better place through their unwavering commitment to the community. Dr. Lepore will be honored at the Dreamland Foundation's annual DreamBIG fundraiser on July 23, 2023.

True Love Is Eternal... For Better and for Worse

The smash comedy hit in London and New York, Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit continues to entertain audiences at Nantucket’s White Heron Theatre.

The plot follows fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles, who has remarried but finds himself haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Clever, insistent, and well-aware of Charles’ shortcomings, Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” the eccentric, flighty Madame Arcati. As personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed. She “passes over” and joins Elvira, allowing two “blithe spirits” to haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

Blithe Spirit continues through July 27, with a 7:30 pm curtain time MondayThursday and a 4 pm Sunday matinee: tickets at WhiteHeronTheatre.org.

Swimming to Benefit Cancer Care

vided free to year-round and summer residents due to the monies raised by the Swim and the Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket organization (“PASCON”).

There is a swimming experience for all levels of swimmer. “Everyone is welcome: there is a kids “splash,” and everything from those who want to get their toes wet in a 400-yard swim to a 4-mile endurance experience. The goal is to enjoy our beautiful Nantucket Sound together and to raise funds for on-island cancer services. We have a swim experience for everyone and to participate you only need to sign up and pledge to raise $200.” said Co-Event Director Jill Roethke.

Registration and check-in this Saturday at Jetties Beach starts at 6:30 am and ends at 7:30 am. There is a mandatory swimmer safety talk at 7:45 am. Spectators will want to arrive by 8 am to not miss the Opening Ceremony.

This year the Swim has expanded its campaign to defeat cancer by supporting ground-breaking research at Mass General to treat brain tumors in young children. Dr Bryan Choi is working on promising cell therapy to shrink brain tumors in kids and is being supported by Swim Across America. “We realize that in the fight against cancer, we are not an island. So we will target some of the funds raised this year to support Dr. Choi’s exciting research while continuing our traditional support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s cancer and palliative care services,” said Co-Event Director Jim Pignato. This aligns with Swim Across America’s mission of cancer research, which has been successful in helping to fund clinical trials that have led to four FDA approved cancer treatments, including the wellknown Keytruda.

The morning features moving tributes by cancer survivors who benefit from the funds raised by the Swim and talks by Oncology staff from NCH and Mass General. “It is really is a feel-good community event, and in addition all swimmers get a terrific beach towel and a great breakfast sandwich from Island Kitchen after a swim in our beautiful Nantucket Sound.” said Roethke. Sign up today at swimacrossamerica.org/Nantucket and join the Nantucket Community in this aquatic celebration of community to Make Waves to Fight Cancer.

beaches of Nantucket. Based on their behavior last year, keep an eye out for warnings before headed to the beach. Beach conditions are posted daily by 11 am at the Insider’s Guide to Nantucket: Nantucket.net/beaches. And be aware that while the tentacles are more dangerous in the water (because they are more difficult to avoid) they can even fire when dead on the beach, so avoid them whenever possible.

Where the Man-o-War were found recently, the Town of Nantucket Harbormaster reported the beaches with purple flags on the daily beach report. Keep an eye out for the warning. Last year, some beaches were closed to swimming if the number of Man-o-War or jellyfish were in great abundance. If you do get stung, you should remove the tentacles immediately, and you can treat the sting with salt water and heat.

we’re on trend for 2023 to be the warmest on record. Similarly, our ocean waters are warming off New England at a faster rate than many other areas. With this warming comes changing patterns for marine species which are either seeking cooler waters or following changing ocean currents.

Rising ocean temperatures are coupled with reduced oxygen levels in the water. This combination, while detrimental to some, has created a suite of conditions where Portuguese Man-o-War can thrive. That, coupled with the south wind we recently had, brought the Man-o-Wars in to the south shore

Having the Portuguese Man-o-War around isn’t all bad. Everything can be prey for something else. Its predators include the Loggerhead Turtle and Ocean Sunfish (or Mola mola), and crabs, among other species. Each of these predators has a specifically curated strategy for avoiding the threat of stinging tentacles so that it can capture the Portuguese Man-o-War as its own prey. For example, the Loggerhead Turtle’s skin is too thick for the nematocysts to puncture. We might not appreciate the Portuguese Man-o-War when hanging on the beach or swimming on a hot summer day, their numbers are increasing and at least they can be a food source for some of our local species.

As sea surface temperatures continue to rise more and earlier occurrences of Portuguese Man-o-War and related jellyfish species may be on the horizon.

It’s emotionally difficult for Greg to not be able to share most of his fishing experiences with his son. “Augie always wants to know how I did,” Greg told me. “It was so great when the water was low at the North Head of the Hummock pond this spring. Augie was able to go all around the pond with me in his chair. It was a special day for us.”

The August Blues tournament is a way to help to honor Augie’s spirit and courage. This will be a month-long bluefish tournament that is designed to get both locals and island visitors involved. Expert anglers or those just getting started can particate. As the website augustbluesnantucket.com states, this is a tournament that gives fishermen a chance to win great prizes regardless if they catch 100 bluefish or only one. The funds raised will go to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, an organization dedicated to ending Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Greg had a lot of work to do to get a tournament like this going. A lot of his fishing friends stepped up to help shoulder the oars. Bill Fisher Tackle is playing a lead role as a major sponsor of the tournament, as is Island X fishing lures. Rafael Osona, the originator and one-man-gang responsible for the Spring Sea Run Opener tournament, has helped as well, along with so many others in our tight-knit Nantucket fishing community (Corey Gammill, Nick Whitbeck, Sam Brandt, John Colton, Tammy King, Matt Roberts, Rick Ramos and Pat Mcevoy...I’m looking at you guys!). Greg’s Nantucket Oral Surgery is sponsoring the junior division so that kids under the age of 17 can participate in the

tournament for free.

One of the things I’m most excited about with this tournament is that it is all about the fun of fishing. The competition is incidental. There will be a Gator prize for the biggest bluefish caught, a Snapper prize for the smallest bluefish caught, and a Strike Three prize for the fisherman with the greatest total length of three bluefish. Please note that all fish are to be measured and the length captured with a picture so that the fish may be released to be caught again one day.

But the fun doesn’t end there, kids—the tournament folks will track Instagram submissions that tag them at august_blues_nantucket, and a prize will go to the person with the most submissions (yeah, I’m feeling lucky on this one!). There will be a prize for the first bonito and false albacore caught as well. And finally, there will be Unicorn Fish prizes for the first to catch some of the unusual species that occasionally stray into the Nantucket fishery, such as Spanish Mackerel or Sea Trout.

I urge you all to sign up for this tournament and support a great cause, as well as helping to make Augie be a member of our fishing community. “Augie has taught me so much,” Greg told me. “He’s taught me patience. To slow down. He has helped me to develop a much greater understanding and to have empathy. These things are what this tournament is all about.”

Greg’s daughter Honor echoes those sentiments: “In the spirit of unity and resilience, the August Blues tournament is more than a fishing competition—it’s a collective effort in the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Every entry fee, every sponsorship, and every fish caught supports this mission.”

Let’s catch those August Blues! Please go to augustbluesnantucket.com and sign up for the tournament today. There are three levels of entry: the basic level is $25 (entry only), the silver level is $50 (includes entry + an August Blues t-shirt) and the blue level is $100 (includes entry, an August Blues t-shirt, + an Island X lure package).

Fishing is always about more than fishing. Be sure to take a kid fishing with you. Have fun. And be grateful every day for your good health.

Living in a Myth

from page 10

back in. I have lifted up a turtle and carried across Polpis Road, then gave myself a hearty pat on the back for my Island Animal Stewardship. I would love to think I am powerful enough to protect the island, or, at least, a turtle.

In that quiet half-hour as we considered the ducklings on the highway, another truth occurred to me. Metaphorically, we aren’t the drivers of progress making unfortunate feathered martyrs as we motor into our bright future. We aren’t the protectors and stewards of the land, keeping Mother Earth happy.

We are the ducks.

We stand in front of a speeding future and calculate the odds of getting our family to survive the path forward. We look at something so vast and so dangerous that it will kill us in a thought, and then we ignore it. We stand on the side of the highway and quack that “Traffic is a myth.”

Global warming is speeding up. In the last week, a foot of rain has fallen on Vermont. Little babbling brooks grew into adolescent thugs that swept through swing sets, houses, mobile homes, and cars. One driver, with New York plates and her hazards flashing on her Mercedes SUV, tried to drive across a hormonal stream. The water took the car for a joy ride, flipping it over and over in the creek bed.

All of that water washed out roads, farms, and 6,671 yards of the Quechee Lakes Lakeland golf course. In a rainstorm that had no name and didn’t even get an interruption into the Ice Road Truckers on the Weather Channel, the Winooski river put feet of water on the streets of the Capital.

On our island, we have accepted that swimming with seals and sharks is okay for us and for our children. Fifty years ago, a movie about a large voracious shark kept millions from going to the beach, and that shark was mechanical. Today, the sharks patrol the eastern shore and chomp seals in half. We sent that video to all of our friends (the ending is not for the squeamish). Then, we put the kids in the Yukon, crank the air conditioning, and deliver them to the predators. I am sure they will be fine.

We live in unprecedented times—so much so that we don’t even notice when the precedent dips under the rising water. The hottest days on record were this month. The hottest month on record was last month. The Caribbean is warmer than ever, and the water around the Florida Keys is 90 degrees. It’s the hottest summer ever…or, as Homer Simpson would say, “yet.”

The new normal is about a century away. In the intervening time, the precedents will keep slipping out to sea with the sand and the bluffs. Next year will be stormier, hotter, and weirder. The year after that will keep going. This will be the best summer to be on Nantucket for the next one hundred years.

Here we are, on God’s Favorite Sandbar, without enough firefighters, without a fire boat that could get to Tuckernuck, and with thousands of beachgoers to witness the Greatest Collection of White Sharks outside of Australia. The fish all have trackers and names; we could print Pokemon cards for each one. Instead of fires, sharks, and erosion, the island selectmen are worried if wetlands regulations will prevent the new houses from having pools. It makes sense to swim in a pool if the sharks are playing in the waves.

When I remember Momma Duck, I think about her last remaining duckling. The two of them hadn’t gone waddling back into the woods, shocked and grief stricken at the loss of three fuzzy fellows. Instead, they stood in the breakdown lane, staring at the traffic. Like many of us, those ducks must have figured that if they ignored the traffic, everything would be just fine.

where he studied with acclaimed voice teacher W. Stephen Smith. He made his Northwestern Opera Theater debut as Paul in the Midwestern premiere of Jake Heggie’s opera, If I Were You, later appearing as Schaunard in La Bohème. He is currently scheduled to sing the role of Luther Harlow/The Outlaw in Northwestern Opera Theater’s production of the opera In a Grove by Christopher Cerrone.

Wolfe earned his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with both Jan Opalach and Robert Swensen. As a student, he performed in A Postcard from Morocco by Dominick Argento and Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Viktor Ullmann. With a strong passion for art song performance, as well as opera, last August, he attended the Steans Music Institute at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, appearing in several recitals with faculty such as Steven Blier, Patricia McCaffrey, Graham Johnson, Alan Darling, Gerald Martin Moore, and Lee Musiker.

Since moving to Chicago, Gmeinder has also worked extensively as a vocal coach, collaborator, and piano teacher. He currently teaches and coaches opera students at Roosevelt and Northwestern Universities, where he has been a vocal coach for La Bohème, Don Giovanni, Les pêcheurs de perles, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Norma, La traviata, and the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s The House Without a Christmas Tree, for which he provided the piano accompaniment on the original cast recording.

Tickets for Tuesday’s 7pm performance are available at Saint Paul’s Church, 20 Fair Street, for $30. Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets may also be purchased in advance at the Antiques Depot, 2 South Beach St.

The three remaining concerts in NMAS’ 2023 summer season will feature the Cavatina Duo of Spanish flautist Eugenia Moliner and Bosnian guitarist Denis Azabagic on August 1; Boston’s Balourdet Quartet, currently in residency at the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet Program, on August 8; and noted pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner on August 15.

Charity Grace Mofsen captures the island of Nantucket in all its glory–“In Light and At Night.” With a particular affinity for astrophotography, she believes there is always Light, if you have eyes to see it. From fine art landscapes to fun portrait sessions and creative product photography, she finds joy sharing her love of Nantucket with the hope that others will also cherish our island’s natural beauty. Describing her style as meditative, Charity Grace highlights the beauty of the island’s contrasts: the solitude of the off-season and the joys of summer, the colors of the Light and the wisdom of the Night.

In addition to his exceptional work in addiction treatment, Dr. Lepore's impact extends far beyond the medical realm. He has been the high school and football team doctor for more than three decades, providing his services to the school without charge. Serving on the school committee for more than 25 years, Dr. Lepore now presides over the committee, utilizing his knowledge, passion, and expertise to advocate for students' welfare. His commitment to the community is further highlighted by his and his wife's open heartedness in providing a safe haven for troubled teenagers.

Dr. Lepore's compassion and dedication are not limited to his professional responsibilities. He has earned the respect and admiration of the community and the world as a leading expert in Lyme and tick-borne illnesses. During deer hunting seasons, he can be seen examining ticks on deer at various gatherings, further demonstrating his commitment to public health and well-being. Additionally, Dr. Lepore's commitment to personalized care is illustrated by his willingness to make house calls, treating patients who cannot afford medical services, and extending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Regarding Dr. Lepore's selection, Alicia L. Carney, Executive Director of the Dreamland Foundation stated, "Dr. Lepore's exceptional qualities of compassion, community service, and selflessness truly embody the spirit of the Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award. His dedication and personal touch have impacted the lives of countless individuals on Nantucket Island. He is truly a ‘good neighbor.’ We are honored to recognize him and celebrate his outstanding contributions. Sixtyseven caring citizens submitted nominations for thirty-four individuals this year, and we are humbled by the support for this year’s award.”

At the Dreamland Foundation’s DreamBIG fundraiser on July 23, Dr. Lepore will be honored with heartfelt recognition of all he has done for our island. At press time, tickets were still available at NantucketDreamland.org. Funds raised by DreamBIG support the Dreamland's mission of building community on Nantucket year-round through shared experiences in film, the arts, culture, learning.

Weekend at the Library

from page 3

terests that make up our community. During the three-day “Weekend” July 20, 21, and 22, there is something for everyone: Thought Leader Thursday, Family Fun Friday, and Singer Songwriter Saturday.

Staff describes the event as tying together threads that are the Atheneum itself: “it’s work and mission as a public library and gathering place, transforming lives with resources and experiences that support lifelong learning for all. All year long we are serving our community and growing multiple forms of literacies with educational presentations, fun in the Weezie Library and through the performing arts. We really want Weekend at the Library to showcase that.

“The Atheneum has a long history of hosting lectures and conversations with the great minds of the day, scientists, journalists, philosophers, from Frederick Douglass who advanced new ways of seeing social constructs to David M. Rubenstein who is a great American philanthropist championing multiple educational institutions and access to historical record.”

While tickets are sold out to the Thursday Weekend at the Atheneum events featuring David Rubenstein, tickets are still available for the Friday Family Fun afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 pm, designed for parents to converse over cocktails and light bites while their children partake of crafts, story times, STEM activities, dance and yoga. Tickets to this event are $50 at NantucketAtheneum.org

Singer Songwriter Saturday brings Grammy Award winning musician Lori McKenna to the Atheneum for two intimate concerts and a summer garden party with festive food and drink. As a performer, McKenna is loved for her immense musical talent, as well as for her expert storytelling skills and talent as a lyricist. Atheneum leadership feels that she is the perfect fit to entertain and inspire island audiences during Weekend at the Library. Tickets to one of her two concerts and to the garden party are $150 at NantucketAtheneum.org.

To explore the Nantucket Atheneum and all it offers, stop by the stately historic building at 1 India Street and visit them online at NantucketAtheneum.org. At press time, a few Weekend at the Library sponsorships were still available.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
