Sea Monster Returns to Nantucket Island
In August of 1937, Nantucket Island was abuzz: a sea monster was swimming in our waters and walking along our shores, leaving huge three-toed prints in the sand. News wires went out, and articles were published across the country speculating about the strange beast. Island fisherman Bill Manville claimed to have seen what he described as a monster more than 100 feet long that the Nantucket Inquirer & Mirror reported “reared its head several times off his starboard bow before turning seaward.”
More sightings followed, then word went out that the massive sea monster with huge teeth had washed up on South Beach (Francis Street Beach). Dozens turned out to see this wonderous creature—a sea monster that, like the stories, was full of hot air.
The Nantucket sea monster was the newest of artist and summer resident Tony Sarg’s huge balloons that he created for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. And the sightings, footprints, local news articles were part of an intricately planned and well-executed hoax and publicity stunt.
Sarg was a well-known and accomplished illustrator, puppeteer, designer, animator, cartoonist, and entrepreneur who delighted in sharing wonder, joy, and magic. And he delighted in pranks. Remembered as the “father of mondern puppetry in North America,” he considered his Macy’s parade balloons to be “upsidedown marionettes.” Sarg summered on and took inspiration from Nantucket Island for nearly twenty years.
On Friday, May 24, the Nantucket Historical Association opens Tony Sarg: Genius at Play, the first of several exhibits and events planned for the 2024 season.
“Tony Sarg was such an important figure in American culture, and his work, unbeknownst to many, still impacts our arts and entertainment today. He was an especially popular character here on Nantucket, and the NHA is proud to be the home for much of his collection. The idea for such a project began decades ago, and we are grateful to the Norman Rockwell Museum and glad to be working with them, to bring this exciting exhibition to the island,” says Niles Parker, Gosnell

Go Bucktails!
by Steve “Tuna” TornovishYikes—it’s the second week of May and no Nantucket anglers have caught a striped bass yet! The first striper of 2023 showed up on May 3. I remember this well as my wonderful, crazy wife Beth landed it! She didn’t know that it was a big deal at the time. I certainly did. So here we are, us Nantucket fishing types, waiting in anticipation. Antici-paaaaaation...it’s keeping me waaaaaaaiting… Oh yeah—what a great tune that is! Anticipation was Carly Simon’s first big hit. It’s a song that she said she wrote back in 1971. The lovely Ms. Simon said it came together in about 20 minutes while she was waiting for fellow musician Cat Stevens to pick her up for a date. Carly had that crazy hot hippie vibe back then, with the long flowing skirts and the floppy felt hat—hard to imagine that anyone would be late to meet her, right? But we should all be glad that Cat Stevens was, as his tardiness helped spawn a yacht rock classic. I was 10 years old when that song came out, riding around in my mom’s Country Squire station wagon, complete with the wood-grain paneling, listening to WRKO on the AM radio (“68 ‘RKO”—I can still hear the jingle!). Carly’s sweet little song has stood the test of time, aided somewhat by a fairly clever ketchup commercial in the 1980s. The yacht rock genre is a strange phenomenon. I chuckle at the thought and poke fun, yet I know every song and most of the lyrics. My finger never seems to jump to change the channel. Man, I’m getting old…
Enough musical nostalgia—let’s get back to catching some stripers, shall we? This early season fishing is all about getting back to classic lures that have withstood the test of time. For me, that means the bucktail jig. The bucktail is so very simple, yet so effective. The lure, in its most basic form, consists of a chunk of lead molded around a fairly stout hook, dressed up with a variety of deer hair that is fastened to the collar of the hook with strong wraps of heavy gauge thread (usually red in color). The most common bucktail jig has been called the Smiling Bill, with a red mouth painted on the face of the jig. Bucktails come in a wide variety of sizes. They catch almost every fish that swims. The bucktails are so versatile that they were included in the emergency kits packed in the rafts of World War II sailors and airmen as an essential survival tool.

Look Out for Lady Slippers
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationIt’s the time of year to hunt for one of my favorite spring flowers. No, not to pick, but to view and enjoy in the wild. The Pink Lady’s Slipper Orchid (or Lady Slipper Orchid), Cypripedium acaule, is emerging now in time to flower around Memorial Day. As the name implies, Lady Slipper Orchid flowers look like elegant pink ballet slippers. Of course, being a New England native orchid, these plants are much hardier that their delicate appearance implies. The Lady Slipper orchid is a hardy perennial that is able to withstand the brutal New England winters underground. The leaves emerge in springtime (usually early to mid-May) with the flowers visible late May to early June.
The flowers themselves, also known as moccasin flowers, are generally pink on Nantucket and variable from light to darker shades. There is also a Yellow Lady’s Slipper orchid (Cypripedium parviflorum) which is not found on Nantucket, but is more widespread on the mainland. The Pink Lady Slipper is the most adaptable of the lady slipper orchids in terms of its moisture tolerances. It can flower in bogs and wet woods as well as dry, sandy uplands. It just likes sterile, acid soil, which is perfect for Nantucket!
What makes a plant an orchid? Members of the family Orchidaceae are all perennial herbs which feature unusual bilaterally symmetric flowers with three petals and three sepals. Two of the petals are lateral and one forms the lower “lip.” They have masses of pollen known as pollinia, and tiny, dust-like seeds.
Pink Lady Slippers consist of two pleated leaves near the ground. From between those leaves sprouts a long stalk that bears a single pink flower. The lower section of the orchid flower (the lip) forms an inflated pouch with a cleft in the center. The pink to white coloring of this pouch causes it to resemble a ballet slipper or moccasin. The pouch formed by the flower’s petals is actually an in-

Easy to See, but Hard to Recognize
essay by Robert P. BarsantiWe have had a run of remarkable weather. May, on Nantucket, is no longer wedding season: brides don’t plan fun activities for guests in the raw rain and fog. But when the weather does break, the sky glows, the trees and bushes gobble up as much warmth as they can absorb, and God is in his heaven.
On Main Street, you can still park your car. The line of traffic remains spotty and sporadic on a weekday afternoon, while the stores are training new staff and decorating the windows. In the sheltered warmth of downtown, hope springs eternal. The black and gray trees were edged in pink and green. The daffodils remained too long at the party, but the tulips and the rest of the spring flowers were making their moves for sunlight and attention. I was spending an idle minute or two on one of the memorialized benches, drinking a five dollar coffee and eating a twenty dollar salad.
In spite of the lightness of my wallet, I was floating on privilege this morning. My privilege, of course, is to be able to sit on Main Street, consider the famous cobblestones, look up through the budding elm trees, and enjoy the sun. If you live on Nantucket Island, it’s hard to find that line between “enjoying the privilege” and “being lazy.” I had a phone full of tasks that I had promised to do before Monday and another list for the rest of the week, but no boss was over my shoulder, no one was tracking my activity and whereabouts, and I hadn’t clocked in on a punchcard for twenty years. Instead, it was in the air. Working out here is a privilege as well, although it is hard to see it that way in a crawlspace among the spiders and mice.
Privilege is easy to see but hard to recognize. It doesn’t walk up to you with a button and a handshake. Nobody puts a special orange “Privilege” tag on your golf clubs, nor do they affix one to the bumper of your pickup truck. Take one boat ride away, and it becomes obvious why people work 51 weeks a year to spend one week on-island. But while you are here, going pillar to post at $5 a gallon, the blessings are hard to see.
Often, when I am in need of a recharge, I imagine what it would be like, right now, to be standing on the top deck of the steamship watching the town, the light, and the island retreat from me. “Finality” is a fair but hard word: how would you march through the moments of your life if it was the final time? For someone on that boat this is the final time they will be on Nantucket. And they will toss that penny.
Privilege implies two more hard things. First, it suggests that you didn’t earn it. I didn’t get awarded this morning on the Legends Bench in front of the Maury People. Nobody gave me a ticket or permission to sit in the spring sun and watch the summer leaves uncurl. It came to me through an accident of time and birth. I moved to the island at a time when I could live out here for the rest of my life. I stayed because I found profitable and meaningful work. I could have wound up in the grime and gravel of Fitchburg, but the wind blew me out here.
Second, privilege also implies duty and stewardship. It all goes away without intention and attention, or, as was beaten into me as a boy, “to whom much is given, much is expected.” If you recognize the blessing that has come to you, you

Go Bucktails!
from page 4
Bucktails look like nothing that fish feed on, specifically, yet they mimic everything in a strange way. From baitfish to sand eels to crabs, the bucktail has just enough similarity to appear like a prime high-protein meal to the striped bass. Bucktails are tipped with a trailer of some sort to give them a bit more fishattracting action as they are retrieved through the surf. The most traditional trailer was the Uncle Josh pork rind strip, dyed a vivid red color. The trailer waves like a fish tail that emerges from the deer hair wrapped around the hook. These days, the trailer possibilities have expanded greatly to include paddle tails made of a variety of soft plastics. The trailers and the dense deer hair slow the descent of the jig in the water. This keeps it in front of the fish.
In my quest to learn more about the appeal of this deceptively simple looking lure, I reached out to three guys who fish with them extensively—Dr. Greg Chotkowski, Rick Ramos, and my dear younger brother Bill Tornovish. These three formed “Go Team Bucktail” and swept the team competition in the 2023 Spring Sea Run Classic fishing tournament. All three of these guys have a reputation for fishing with a maniacal determination. They simply get after the fish.
Dr. Greg filled me in: “Bucktailing is my go-to in the spring and fall. It also produces surprisingly during the summer months when you think there are no stripers around. In the spring, the bass are migratory, and they just show up. Who knows what day that is! These bass are hungry and they are chasing bait fish up and down the shoreline. It is surprising how many bass are caught close to shore, right beyond the lip where the waves break. For this reason, cast distance is not a factor. It is more about maintaining the bucktail in the proper water column to be most effective.”
One of the advantages of the simple bucktail is that the angler can control the presentation of the lure with retrieval speed and rod action. Thus, the lure can linger near the bottom, skip across the surface, or meander in that sweet spot somewhere in between. Greg continues: “You can somewhat regulate this with the weight of the bucktail. For a calm surf, I will start out with a 1- or 1-1/2-ounce bucktail. The goal is to keep the bucktail in the mid-water column in front of the lip. If the bucktail gets pushed above the lip by the surf, then go to a heavier bucktail. You don’t want to use too heavy a bucktail, because you do not want to continued on page 16
Go Bucktails!
be dragging this along the bottom. This is where the finesse comes in on the speed of the retrieval and jigging it to keep it off the bottom. Touching the bottom is okay—dragging it through sand is not. This is why bucktailing is great for the beaches of Nantucket. The beaches are mostly sandy bottoms with few obstructions to get hung up on (rocks, weeds, trees).”
Brother Bill learned about the effectiveness of the bucktail when fishing with Greg. He quickly added the new technique to his arsenal, and his catch rate jumped considerably. Bill told me: “Bucktails work on those days when others fishing next to you are getting skunked, especially when the bite is finicky.”
From watching Billy fish next to me (and outcatch me), I notice that he tends to pop his jig up through the water with a quick upwards sweep of his rod and then let the lure fall as he takes up a the slack line. Most of his bites occur as the jig is dropping back down.
The first time that I met the affable Rick Ramos was one early morning at Smith’s Point as we both caught stripers by tossing 3-ounce bucktails into the rip. Rick told me that he has had a long-time connection to the bucktail. It started as a kid, when his dad would take him out hunting for deer. The deer tails were saved and later utilized for fishing lures that his dad hand-poured in the basement during the winter months. Rick caught a lot of stripers with those handtied bucktails. Rick got back into striper fishing in his 30s. “I started fishing the other island, Martha’s Vineyard, where there’s lots of structure and boulder fields. Catching bass there just felt easier than the place we know as the Grey Lady.”
Rick talked with his dad about the lack of solid structure here on Nantucket. “‘Dad, it’s hard here— there’s no structure!’ My father stopped my ‘no structure’ rant and said, ‘Son: tell me how the water is moving. Is there strong current? Tell me about any rips that you’ve found.’ I immediately described spots and scenarios where these patterns appeared. His response was, ‘throw a bucktail.’ Now at that time, I looked at the bucktail like many anglers do: it’s a boat jig; it’s only for bottom fishing; it’s too heavy; and some say it’s boring. My father assured me that it would catch. So I gave it a try on the rips accessible to surfcasters here on Nantucket—in fastmoving, heavy water with a strong wind in my face. In fact, the only thing that would punch through the wind that day was a 3-ounce bucktail. After a few casts and figuring out my jigging patterns to work the jig in the fast moving water, I connected and quickly developed a rhythm and feel for where the fish were holding. That day was the best outing I’ve had on the Nantucket surf since I’ve started. Of course the obsession began ‘same tide next day,’ and they were there again. I quickly realized that my Pops was right. The bucktail was a fish finder!”
We in the beach fishing community joke that there’s two types of fishermen out there—the “Go bucktails” gang and the “No bucktails” crew. I’ve caught enough nice stripers on the deer hair jigs to know who is right on this one. And for those who eschew the humble bucktail, I say this: You’re so vain, you probably think this article is about you. Now would someone please catch the first beach striper of 2024?

Look Out for Lady Slippers
genious trap to lure bees and other insects into pollinating the plant. A bee that enters the flower looking for nectar cannot exit the way it entered. Instead, it must crawl to the back of the flower, rubbing against the flower’s pollinia (the solid mass of pollen), which will adhere to the bee’s back. Assuming this same
bee then visits a second Pink Lady Slipper, this pollen will be deposited on the female stigma in the same manner. However, because the flower emits a nectarlike odor but produces no nectar, many bees are quick to realize the foolishness of entering additional lady slipper flowers with no reward, and so only a few of
the flowers are pollinated each season.
Because of the pollinator attraction and size of the pouch-like flower, Lady Slipper flowers can be inhabited by pollinator predators. Most commonly, crab spiders will inhabit the pouch sac and attack and eat entering insects. When you find some of these orchids in the wild, check the pouch for visitors!
On Nantucket, this orchid is locally common, with each plant growing a single flower. These individual flowers tend to grow in clusters, so where you see one, you may see several. Off-island, the Pink Lady slipper is considered a woodland plant. On Nantucket, it occurs in more diverse habitats—the heathlands of Head of the Plains, shrublands of the south coast, boggy areas, and even in the dunes of Coatue. At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, a heathland clearing between pine groves has often held dozens of Lady Slippers orchids. Between 2019 and 2021, after restoration efforts cutting Japanese black pine trees, the cleared area was awash in pink lady slipper plants. Some were only vegetative (not blooming that year), but there were hundreds appearing after the pine clearing. Today, the Pink Lady Slippers in that area persist, but the numbers have diminished over time.
Even though we consider these orchids a special part of the Nantucket flora, Pink Lady Slipper orchids actually have an extensive range. They can be found in the eastern third of the United States, particularly in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, south along the Appalachians to Alabama. This plant is widespread in Canada, where it is found in every province except British Columbia. Within its geographic range, it can be found in a wide variety of environments: from coastal plains, to pine barrens, to mountaintops. Lady Slipper orchids require highly acidic soil, but tolerate a range of shade and moisture, though it prefers at least partial shade and well-drained slopes. The acidic soils of our pines and heathland plant communities are well-suited to the orchid’s requirements.
While many have tried, Lady Slipper orchids are notoriously difficult to grow and propagate. They require a special fungus association for germination. This delicate relationship is necessary for seed germination, but is not required once plants begin making true leaves. Once established, lady slipper plants will propagate on their own and live for many years if left undisturbed. Because a picked lady slipper will not rejuvenate itself, and the plant has a less than 5% transplant success rate, they are often considered “off-limits” for picking. Because the Lady Slipper orchid takes many years to go from seed to mature plants, the gathering of seed-bearing specimens is presently unsustainable and not recommended. Remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints.
A Wine Journey One Glass at a Time
3pm with Christian Moreau Chablis (a Current Vintage favorite) leads into a tasting of Bourgogne Favorites led by the cultivated and engaging Denis Toner, founder of the Nantucket Wine Festival. Denis is “one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met,” commented English. “He always discovers new gems, and Denis is expert at finding new producers—this tasting will be great for the collector!”
One of the most exciting aspects of a wine tasting is the opportunity to explore new varietals and expand your palate. From 3 to 4:30 pm on Friday, May 17, Current Vintage hosts a Ceretto Tasting with Federico Ceretto, who will be on-island from Alba to share his family's iconic Barolo & Barbaresco, along with some outstanding whites produced in the Langhe subregion of Piedmont.
And from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, Sir Anthony Hamilton Russell, who traveled here from South Africa, will present his excellent coastal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and signature Pinotage from Hamilton Russell Vineyards, one of the most southerly wine estates in Africa.
Friday events at CV end with a very special Wine Tasting and Book Signing with Alex Gambal. Beth English is very excited to welcome Gambal to sign his new book, Climbing the Vines in Burgundy, a fun and fascinating account of his journey from intern to world-famous winemaker. “He’s smart and engaging and has had an incredible journey,” said English, “and there are references in his book to people in the wine trade and some Nantucket people.” Gambal Burgundy wines have been sought after on Nantucket for decades, and this tasting is a terrific opportunity to meet the winemaker and taste fine Alex Gambal wines from both Burgundy and his American project in Santa Rita Hills.
These tasting voyages around the globe continue on Saturday, May 18 at Current Vintage with a noontime CV Champagne Supernova Tasting led by Sommelier Savannah Johnson. This is a rare chance to taste some favorite limited production Grower Champagnes such as Marie Courtin, Christophe Mignon, and Champagne Nowak. From 1 to 2 pm, guests have the chance to meet Silvia Allegrini, heir of the prestigious 16th century Allegrini Winery, who will share their famous Amarone, Valpolicella, and Lugana wines from the Veneto.
A tasting of Wine Festival Icons begins at 2 pm, and from 3:30 to 5 pm on Saturday, Current Vintage ends their festive tasting series with a sparkling session featuring Ca’del Bosco Franciacorta paired with Calvisius Caviar from Lombardy. As a special treat, acclaimed restaurateur Cesare Casella will be at CV, carving his rare-breed heritage breed American prosciutto. His Casella Prosciutto is internationally known for his slow, on-the-bone curing process that results in an incomparable prosciutto that is juicy, marbled, delicate, and nutty.
Beyond the pleasure of tasting exquisite wines, these sessions offer an educational experience led by knowledgeable experts. Attendees have the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of winemaking techniques, the influence of terroir on flavor profiles, and the art of pairing wine with food. Whether you're curious about the nuances of varietals or eager to learn the secrets of the perfect wine and cheese pairing, there's something at Current Vintage for everyone to discover.
Whether you attend these Current Vintage tastings alone or with friends, you're sure to leave having enjoyed a special camaraderie and with a deeper appreciation for the world of wine. Mark your calendars, gather your fellow wine enthusiasts, and come to Current Vintage at 4 Easy Street for a wine journey through the vineyards, one glass at a time. Cheers!
Easy to See but Hard to Recognize
must be humble in the face of this boon, and you must use it to mend the world. Now, mending the world can mean eliminating war, poverty, and disease across the globe, but I tend to define the world in a much smaller and narrower way. Can I mend the world I live in? How can I improve this garden?
On a recent weekend, Litter Derby teams picked up 11.5 tons of trash. On any given Saturday, a smaller contingent of the Clean Team puts on the vests, picks up grabbers and bags, and heads out to clean up the mess left by those people who can’t and won’t identify their own privilege. Volunteers don’t forge the island, but they burnish the community that lives on it. In the words of the Shakers, they put “hands to work, hearts to God.” They teach swimming, they run a food bank, they set up warming places, they drop off Meals on Wheels, and, of course, they run the Hospital Thrift Shop.
The dedicated volunteers at the Thrift Shop see their endeavor as more than a business: they see it as service. When a family walks away with a $100 sofa, they have been helped. To volunteer is to acknowledge that your privilege allows (and requires) service to others, especially those who can’t order a white leather sectional to be shipped over from Hyannis. Thanks to the Thrift Shop, you can mend the world one loveseat at a time.
On our privileged island, we live a life of contradictions. Our community needs both money and time: gift bags and trash bags. Where we make our mistakes is where we build our walls. Our lives don’t require one or the other, they require both volunteering and fundraising. We did not earn this May morning on the bench, but like a pearl of very great price, we must do all that we can to keep it.
Sea Monster Returns
Executive Director.
from page 3
Genius at Play exhibit features Sarg’s original artwork, illustrations, marionettes, animations, books, commercial products, archival photographs, and ephemera from his dynamic life and career, including nearly two hundred objects and images from the NHA’s extensive Tony Sarg Collection. Highlighting Sarg’s tremendous talent and legacy within the fields of puppetry and illustration, the exhibition also reveals how Nantucket’s historic sites and colorful characters came to inspire his work and the many ways that this influential artist gave back to the island he loved.
Exhibition themes explore Sarg’s professional as well as his personal life, from his upbringing in Guatemala and military career in Germany, to his involvement in the artistic circles of London, New York, and Nantucket. These personal vignettes are joined by sections devoted to Sarg’s diverse professional pursuits, from illustration, puppetry, and animation to Macy’s parade balloons, commercial products, children’s books, and architectural projects.
Rumor has it that Morton (the name that Sarg gave to his sea monster) will visit Nantucket again this summer. Watch for hints of the sea monster’s return in the form of giant footprints, his shadow, and his tail appearing around town and at various NHA historic sites.
children’s Discovery Center, as well as regularly scheduled Tony Sarg Storytimes. More work by Tony Sarg can be viewed this summer in the rich collection of pictorial maps of Nantucket displayed in the Hadwen House on upper Main Street. And the NHA Research Library on Fair Street will house a special display entitled Playful Pictures: Books and Illustrations by Tony Sarg. This exhibition brings together additional artwork from projects featured in the Tony Sarg: Genius at Play exhibit in the Whaling Museum. It includes works from three of Sarg’s most significant published works: Humours of London (1914); Tony Sarg’s Book for Children from Six to Sixty (1924), and Tony Sarg’s New York (1926). Employing colorful bird’s eye views and illustrations that playfully interact with words on the page, the works on view demonstrate Sarg’s skills as a visual storyteller. Also included are treasured Tony Sarg books from the NHA’s Library Collection, such as Tony Sarg’s Book of Animals (1925), Tony Sarg’s Book of Tricks (1928), Where is Tommy? (1932), and many others.
Tickets for A Nantucket Night, a special fundraising celebration on August 3 with cocktails, dinner, live music and dancing in a setting inspired by Tony Sarg and his creations, are on sale now at nha.org.
On August 5 from 10 am to 3 pm, the NHA will host a free Sarg Community Day at Children’s Beach, with Morton the Sea Monster joining in a fantastical, playful celebration for all that includes a puppet show, Sarg-inspired crafts, and a chance to see a 75-foot recreation of Sarg’s Sea Monster, Morton.
The NHA is offering a robust slate of activities and public programs centered around the exhibition Tony Sarg: Genius at Play
The artist’s creative talents will be explored in several NHA Decorative Arts workshops with Sarg-inspired projects, including decoupage under glass and decorative bandboxes with Sarg’s illustrations.
At the Whaling Museum, a free lecture series features talks by scholars and artists, while Sarg-inspired crafts will be offered during July and August in the
“To say we are excited about bringing a recreation of one of Tony’s Sarg Thanksgiving Day Parade-sized balloons to the island this summer is an understatement. With our featured exhibition about Tony Sarg this season, our staff has been intentionally weaving Tony Sarg's story-telling into many of our programs and offerings, and Sarg Community Day will be a great example of that for island and visiting families to enjoy. The essence of Tony Sarg is fun, and that is what this program and this recreated moment from the famous 1937 Nantucket sea serpent landing, will be all about,” says Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
