Beautiful Blooms to Help Our Community

Tonight, Thursday, June 27, the 24th annual Blooming Bids event offers an evening of fun and fundraising, live music, small bites, refreshing libations, and enticing silent auction items, all to benefit Nantucket’s Behavioral Health Center. Tickets to the evening festivities are available at fairwindscenter.org and also at the door.

All are welcome to drop by the tent at Bartlett’s Farm on Thursday after 3 pm to see auction items and to place a bid or make a donation; no tickets are needed for this afternoon viewing. The auction features more than 30 gorgeous planters and window boxes created and donated by island landscapers, nurseries, florists, and gardeners, along with gift cards, travel packages, experiences, and Nantucket items and services. Bids will be accepted in-person and online until 7 pm.

The day culminates with a celebration of the 62nd year of Fairwinds from 5 to 7 pm, when ticket holders gather to enjoy the festivities. This is the first public event for Fairwinds new Executive Director, Roberto Santamaria, who officially joined the team two weeks ago, following an extensive national search. At the Blooming Bids evening event, Santamaria, along with Police Chief Jody Kasper and Hospital President Amy Lee, will update the community on collaborative efforts to promote a healthy Nantucket.

Every dollar raised at Blooming Bids helps to support Fairwinds, which provides critical and confidential mental health care to all on Nantucket, regardless of ability to pay. These services include crisis response, outpatient therapy, psychiatry, medication management, development testing, in-home therapy, therapeutic mentoring and more.

Fairwinds serves more than 1,000 individuals and families annually. The impact on the Nantucket community of the services Fairwinds offers cannot be understated: the organization is an invaluable resource for island residents who would otherwise have to travel to the mainland for help.

Stop by Bartlett’s Farm on Thursday during the day to see the beautiful blooms and to bid on your favorites.

If you or someone you know requires immediate assistance, call the Fairwinds Crisis Response Hotline at 508-221-3315. Fairwinds is available 24/7, 365 days a year, ready to offer aid to anyone within our community. For life-threatening emergencies, dial 911 immediately. Details on programs at fairwindscenter.org

“A Vengeful Obsession” Live, from The Met

Aptly described in newyorkcitytheatre.com as “a vengeful obsession” that “becomes a deadly pursuit...across the thrashing sea,” Nantucket audiences will be treated to a preview highlight sampling of The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025 production of Moby-Dick on Tuesday, July 30, co-hosted by the Nantucket Historical Association and Nantucket Dreamland.

This one-night-only prelude of composer and pianist Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer’s “sea-drenched, heaven-storming epic” will be performed in the Dreamland. The program will feature the inside story of the opera’s creation from Heggie, highlighted with film clips from the San Francisco Opera, and performances by acclaimed tenor Nicholas Phan and baritone Daniel Rich. A rooftop reception with the artists will follow.

“We are thrilled to welcome The Metropolitan Opera to the island this summer with our partners at Nantucket Dreamland. It is a fitting place to host a special opportunity to preview portions of the Met Opera’s 2025 production of Moby-Dick and provide the community and summer visitors the rare opportunity to hear great opera singers perform this thrilling music,” said Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

“This is an incredible opportunity to experience the transformative power of live performance on our small island with the world-class Metropolitan Opera. While Dreamland has long been a venue for sharing the MET Live broadcast screenings in our theaters, the opportunity to bring this live, one-of-a-kind evening to our Nantucket community is truly extraordinary. We look forward to welcoming our friends and neighbors to this historic event and extend our sincere thanks to our partners at the Nantucket Historical Association for their enthusiasm and collaborative spirit in presenting this special preview performance,” said Dreamland’s Executive Director Alicia Carney.

Biking through the Mists of Memory

I follow a boy to the beach. He pedals a brown 12-speed Univega with red panniers hanging off the rear rack, as if he were pedaling across the country and needed to bring everything he would ever need. The boy is bent over the racing handlebars, with his hands resting on the lower handles and his butt raised by a fraction of an inch off the seat. He wears a Campagnolo bicycling cap, although his bike has no rat traps for his feet nor is he wearing a helmet.

He is alone, but for me.

He does not ride with care or caution. He swoops across the line of traffic without the benefit of a crosswalk, ignores the stop signs, and, in the fandango of youth, he slaloms down an empty road. He glides as if he were the phantom of a swift. The chains chuckles through the derailleur.

At the beach will be his book, an inflatable mattress that someone else will sleep on tonight, and a kite decorated like a seagull.

There will be time. There will be time for a cookout and for a nap and for a long walk down to Nobadeer and, if the waves are right and the tide is low, there will be a time to body surf all the way up the sand.

I follow him to the beach every June. After he locks his bike to the rack, he disappears down the stairs and into the friendly mists of memory. After the first swim, there is no other.

I have followed him every year. I have driven ten different cars in my time, I have travelled with a hundred others onto dozens of beaches, but he remains the great original to whom all swimmers must pay homage.

We always wind up at the sea.

For some of us, we come over the bridge, past the last Market Basket, and into the hurly burly of Hyannis and the Steamship Sometimes Authority, before driving down the ramp and returning. It has been months, it has been years, it may have been half a lifetime. For the rest of us, we are stuck on Old South Road, in between angry clients and a plumbing supply truck. It’s time to back out of all this too much with us.

The years cling. They collect in remittances, invoices, and birthdays. So many of the years are spent sitting and waiting. You wait for the parts to arrive, you wait for payday, you wait for the weekend. Out here, November stretches for six months without even a snow day. You wait for the summer, while the joints stiffen and the breaths grow short.

The boy stands with the bike between his legs, waiting.

This evening, I followed him into the fogless dark. Fisherman’s Beach has become one of my favorite South Shore beaches. On this night, the Strawberry moon cast the glowing moon-shadow across the Atlantic, the rolling surf, and the sand. Out on the water, the line of squid boats paced the night horizon. Another fisherman, on shore, had pointed his headlights into the surf and cast to the edge of the light. He stood alone and minuscule in the blue oceanic dark.

The night washed up over the sand, then climbed leafy dunes, and claimed

Predatory Plants

It sounds like something out of a movie: predatory plants. This has me thinking zombies, Venus fly traps, body snatchers, and, possibly, giant dog-eating vines (Feed me Seymore!). However, predatory plants are not a foreign concept. In fact, there are multiple plants found around Nantucket that exhibit predatory behavior.

In general, plants get energy via two different strategies: most are autotrophs, making their own energy, and others are heterotrophs. We generally know plants as autotrophs because it’s the strategy most plants use, making energy from the sun via photosynthesis. Other autotrophs, more rarely, obtain chemical energy through oxidation. But we’re here to talk about those that cannot make their own food.

Black Eyed Susans

Heterotrophs are consumers which depend on other sources for their food (pssst – we are heterotrophs). Plant heterotrophs cannot perform photosynthesis. The group of plants found on Nantucket that we can call “predatory plants” generally find food in two ways: by being parasitic or carnivorous. These fascinating plants can be found across Nantucket Island, so let’s dive into a few examples.

About 1% of all flowering plants in the world (around 4,000 species) are parasitic, meaning they steal nutrients from other plants. One easy way to identify these primarily non-photosynthetic plants is that they aren’t green.

A favorite parasitic plant is dodder vine, an orange, vegetative vine often found around the cranberry bogs. Dodders (Cuscuta spp.) are obligate parasitic plants whose twining stems produce small clusters of white flowers. The orange or yellowish stems will wrap around the host and insert specialized structures (known as haustoria) into the host plant. The haustoria establish a physical connection between the dodder and the host that permits the withdrawal of nutrients and water from the host to the dodder plant. As dodder is an obligate parasite and cannot survive without a host, seedlings must find a host plant within 5-10

NANTUCKET ISLAND

Nantucket’s beautiful & pristine shorelines. For gentle surf, go to north shore beaches like Jetties, Steps Beach, Dionis, & Brant Point. For experienced swimmers who like heavier surf, visit Cisco, Surfside, Nobadeer, & Tom Nevers Beach. If you have senior members, Jetties and Sconset beaches is among the easier to access. Not all beaches have lifeguards, and only a few have facilities.

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. Follow the QR code to discover miles of bike paths, where to rent bikes, biking tips, and where to fi nd water stations along the way.

Six Days of Dance

The Nantucket Dance Festival returns on July 9 to 14 with a diverse lineup of world-class artists. For 2024, Co-Artistic Directors Lauren Lovette and Lauren King are incorporating live music and expanding the repertoire of dance styles, including tap, ballroom, and street dance as well as ballet, to create an unparalleled experience for dance enthusiasts and the Nantucket community.

Now in its second year as the primary fundraiser for Nantucket Dance Theatre, the festival contributes crucial funds to support dance education, programs, scholarships, and performance opportunities for island youth. Over the past year, NDT has launched impactful initiatives, including weekly classes at the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club, a budding collaboration with STAR Nantucket, the successful participation of more than 100 local dancers in the annual Nantucket Nutcracker and more.

This festival is not just a showcase of talent but a celebration of community, culture, and the transformative power of dance that aims to leave a lasting impact

the early summer homes. The renters had not come down yet, nor had the owners. Instead, the houses waited in their ocean view.

The waves kept an astronomical waltz time. In the moon-glare, a few constellations danced the tune. A southwest wind hummed through the beach grass and flung the sand like confetti.

The boy stood at the base of the stairs. Then he turned and ran.

I did not follow the phantom into the sea that night. Over the years, I have developed a fine reverence for the dark, the cold, and the wet. The years that slipped away in the first dive, would return with a vengeance as the tide pulled westward. In spite of years of laps in pools, I would slip undetected into the dark, but not unappreciated by scuttling claws or snapping jaws. There would be time enough for that, as well.

Nantucket has been a well-loved island for thousands of years. The Wampanoag stood here and stared at the sea. They waited for whales, or birds, or fish. But they waited and watched and measured the horizon.

The settlers, tending sheep, walked here. The

shore whalers too, with their stands, their boats, and their tryworks, stood and watched. Later, there was a train, real estate speculators, and even a hotel, all called to the watery horizon and the rolling surf. The coast guard rescuers—who watched and walked this beach in search of the foundering, the floating, and the drowned—walked sand long since carried out to the deadly shoals.

Where they stood is hundreds of yards out to sea. The beach that copies itself, day to day, tide to tide, year to year, on a receding shore. What seems stable, slips away by the handful.

But not to the ungraspable phantom on the Univega. The beach remains what it was when he first saw it, eternal, electric, and ecstatic. To follow him to the beach is to drop the years like so many dirty tshirts and plunge into the waves. The cold remains, the waves remain, even the ribbed bottom remains. And you remain. There will be time for summer to return. There will be time for stripers and beach books and footballs thrown into the hands of a curving wave. Only the years slip away. The summer remains. Swim and be whole again.

Beach Concert & So Much More

from page 7

required a world-class effort. In 1997, a small group of volunteers sought an innovative and inclusive way to raise money for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Led by the late Kathy Clauss, they imagined what seemed impossible: what if we could bring the world-famous Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra to Nantucket?

Working with a few tireless advocates on the hospital’s Board of Trustees, including Margaretta Andrews and the late Charles Balas, Clauss’ idea of a concert on the beach began to take shape.

In August of 1997, the legendary John Williams conducted the orchestra at Jetties Beach while thousands of islanders came together to raise a total of $585,000. The hospital used these funds to purchase cardiac equipment and defibrillators. Planning for 1998 began immediately.

The next year, a then relatively unknown 38-year-old named Keith Lockhart came to Nantucket to conduct the orchestra. He continues to head the 100+ ensemble today. “What stays in my mind is the incredible beauty of the setting. It’s great music in a sublime place,” Lockhart told N Magazine of his favorite part of conducting on Nantucket.

Many Nantucketers work together each year to make this concert a reality. Volunteers, hospital staff, vendors, donors, and community partners join together to celebrate the best of Nantucket: summertime, the beach, live music, and raising money for a community cause. Today, the Boston Pops on Nantucket raises millions of dollars annually for Nantucket Cottage Hospital to support the hospital’s year-round commitment to the health of our island community.

“We are honored to be the co-chairs of the 27th annual Pops on Nantucket. It is always a great event, and it is such an important cause. Super Diamond and the Pops are going to put on an amazing show,” said this year’s event co-chairs Erin and Jamie Siminoff.

General admission ticket sales are just $30 each adult and $10 per child at Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s website: NantucketHospital.org/Pops. Limited reserved seating options are still available by calling 508-825-8250. All ticket levels are non-refundable and there is no rain date for this event. All proceeds benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital, a nonprofit community hospital.

Predatory Plants

days before they run out of energy. To do so, they can sense which nearby plants would make the best hosts and actively grow in their direction. This seemingly delicate plant is truly a zombie (or maybe a vampire) in disguise. One species that we have on island, Buttonbush dodder (Cuscuta cephalanthi), uses a large number of herbaceous and shrubby species as host plants. Its common name derives from the fact that buttonbush (Cephalanthus) is one of these unfortunate hosts. Most dodder species are not host specific.

Scaldweed or common dodder (Cuscuta gronovii), is commonly found in the cranberry bogs and Windswept as well as Stump Pond. But does this parasite harm it’s host? Dodder ranges in severity based on its species and the type of host, the time of attack, and whether any viruses are also present in the host plant. For the cranberry bogs, it is a species that is actively managed for since it decreases yield. Otherwise, it isn’t known to wipe out its host plants.

Another favorite parasitic plant of the woods is the ghost plant (Monotropa uniflora). Also known as Indian pipe because of the plants resemblance to a peace pipe, ghost plants are often mistaken for fungi because of their pale, fleshy appearance. They typically occur in well-established forests and are often thought of as indicators of healthy ecosystems. It’s actually an herbaceous perennial flowering plant native to our region. At one time, it was believed that ghost plant absorbed nutrients from decayed organic material; however, this is not the case. We now know that ghost plant obtains its nutrients by tapping into the resources of trees, indirectly through myccorhizal fungi. The fungi acts as a sort of middleman that processes food delivery to the ghost plant from the surrounding green plant.

It’s a pretty good strategy to be parasitic and not rely on the sun when you grow in the deep, dark woods. The most notable part of ghost plant is the translucent, waxy white or pink flower; the nodding bloom is on a translucent stem with scale-like leaves. It usually blooms in our area in July, so keep an eye out on your woodsy walks. You can find these in the mesic woods of Squam Swamp and

Squam Farm. You can also sometimes see them in winter as withered, black stems at the base of trees.

In contrast to the parasites, carnivorous plants trap and consume insects to supplement their nutrition. Our carnivorous plants do have chlorophyll and photosynthesize to some extent, but need additional nutrition which they attain via their carnivorous ways. On Nantucket these include pitcher plants (Sarracenia sp.), sundews (Drosera sp.), and bladderworts (Utricularia sp.).

Our native purple pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea, cover photo) is found amongst sphagnum mosses in bogs or other acidic wetlands and is the only pitcher plant species native to New England. They can be found in the kettle hole bogs of the Middle Moors like Donut Bog and Taupawsha, among other areas. Pitcher plants are named for the pitcher-shaped leaves which hold water and trap insects. Insects are attracted into the lurid red or purple pitchers, and are then prevented from getting out by downward-pointing hairs. Prey drown in the rainwater that collects in the base of each leaf. The rain water is mixed with digestive enzymes which the plant secretes to digest trapped insects, supplying much-needed nitrogen for a plant adapted to nutrient-poor bog condi-

tions. Other carnivorous plants are also found in boggy and nitrogen-deficient conditions.

I love the various sundew species found around our freshwater wetlands and bogs. They look like tiny seedlings with red threads covered in fine dew drops. The fairy-like, delicate-looking plants bely the deadly juices that cover the leaves. What looks like a fresh spring dew is actually a sticky, digestive sap which attracts, traps, and then slowly digests prey. We have three species on-island; the roundleaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), the spatulate-leaved sundew (Drosera intermedia), and the thread-leaved sundew (Drosera filiformis). Sundews are closely related to Venus fly traps and have a similar trigger movement. Insects stuck to the sap struggle, causing the sticky leaf to fold over the insect, trapping it for digestion. Although insect prey is not vital to sundew’s survival, research has shown that sundews that are successful tend to thrive and flower to a greater extent. I commonly find them in and among cranberry plants and sphagnum in the bogs at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation.

The final group of carnivores are the bladderworts. On Nantucket, we have three species; the delicate slender bladderwort (Utricularia subulata), mixed bladderwort (Utricularia geminiscapa), and common bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris). All three can be found, to varying degrees, on coastal plain pond shores and occasional sphagnum bogs. Bladderworts are a submerged herb in ponds and bogs floating horizontally on the surface. The small bladders, for which the plant is named, are actually small pouches which trap zooplankton (tiny aquatic organisms) in the water column. Inside the bladder, digestive enzymes and bacteria turn the meal into nutrients for the plant. You may not see the bladders from the surface, but you may note the snapdragon-like yellow or purple flowers which rise singly or in little clusters above the water.

None of our carnivorous plants are dangerous to humans. In fact, they are more in danger due to habitat destruction and collection. They are an important part of the biodiversity of Nantucket and, as such, should be left where they are.

“A Vengeful Obsession”

Live, from the Met

from page 4

Following its premiere, the opera was hailed as “a whale of a hit” (Associated Press), “an undeniable success” (The New York Times), “a triumph” (Dallas Morning News), “the hit of the season” (The Washington Post), “glorious and gripping” (Opera Today), “powerful and emotionally irresistible” (San Francisco Chronicle). With a libretto by Gene Scheer, based on the iconic novel by Herman Melville, the opera tells the famous story of Captain Ahab and the ill-fated whaleship Pequod. After the white whale known as Moby Dick tears off one of Ahab’s legs, he becomes obsessed with finding and destroying him at any cost. Only the ship’s first mate, Starbuck, sees the deadly implications of Ahab’s obsession.

The Metropolitan Opera, founded in New York in 1883, has been home to the world’s most creative and talented singers, conductors, composers, stage directors, choreographers, and more ever since. The company stages more than 200 opera performances each season and welcomes more than 800,000 attendees a year.

The performance and reception will take place in Nantucket Dreamland’s main theater. Tickets for this special prelude of The Met Opera’s Moby-Dick are on sale now, with a performance ticket and a performance-plus-reception ticket offering.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves, interprets and shares the diverse stories of Nantucket with all audiences through its collections, properties, programs, and research. The Nantucket Dreamland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural and intellectual life of Nantucket by providing year-round films, educational programs, and a venue for community activities that engage Nantucket in the evolving world of entertainment and education. The Dreamland’s mission is to build community on Nantucket year-round by bringing people together to share experiences through film, art, culture, and learning.

This presentation will be in collaboration with musicians from the Rossini Club playing a composition by Karim al-Zand to explore how ballet, tap, ballroom, jookin', modern, & Irish step dancers respond to rhythm. This program will be followed by a cocktail reception in the Dreamland’s Harborview Room.

All day on Wednesday and Thursday, July 10 and 11, fifteen different free classes for youth are being offered. BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
