Celebrating Blue Skylines

This Friday, July 19, from 5 to 7 pm, the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) will host a reception celebrating their Blue Skylines exhibition in the Big Gallery. The exhibition opened July 12 and will be on display through Monday, July 29.

“Blue Skylines focuses on large works by a bevy of premier Nantucket artists, from abstract pieces to island images,” said AAN artistic director and curator Robert Frazier. The Big Gallery lends itself beautifully to showcasing larger artworks, with its lofty ceilings and extra-long windows allowing light to pour into the upstairs space.

The Big Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 12 noon to 4 pm; located on the second floor of the Thomas Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf, the building was home to AAN’s Kenneth Taylor Galleries from 1945 to 1988.

To learn more about the AAN, visit them at nantucketarts.org and follow @ackartists.

Swim to Fight Cancer

Nantucket is known for its pristine ocean water, and the island has a reputation as being one of the premier places in the nation for open water swimming. Since the early 1900s the island has been a destination spot for swim adventurers. Swimmers delight in Nantucket’s warm and calm summer waters.

A group of Nantucket athletes begin open water swimming during the chill of early May and continue right on through to November. This group is known as Nantucket Open Water Swimming, a part of the Nantucket Athletic Association. In addition

The Patriot Way

It’s August 20, 2023, and the inaugural August Blues tournament is in high gear. I’m feeling pretty good as I have my morning coffee and check the leaderboard. There I am, sitting on top of the hill for the Gator Blue category (the longest bluefish), thanks to a 36-inch beast that I had caught on August 12. Good times, good times!

Two thirds of the month was gone, and I had a shot at a major prize. Now I’m pretty good at math, so I did a little calculating: if I couple that monster blue with two average but respectable 30-inch fish, I’d be at 96 total inches. Hmmm… How would that stack up for the Triple Strike part of the contest, the grand prize of the August Blues event? I scroll up and see some familiar names. My brother, Bill Tornovish, is in third place with three fish totaling 88 inches. Noah Karberg, a threat in every fishing tournament, is in second place with his three best fish at 94.5 inches. Hey, my total of 96 inches would be looking mighty fine! Yeah, I’d only be 1.5 inches behind the leader, who is… wait, what? Tedy Bruschi is leading the tournament? That Tedy Bruschi? The New England Patriots Hall of Fame linebacker and team captain? The dude with three Super Bowl rings, the all-time leading tackler for the Dynasty? Yes indeed, that Tedy Bruschi!

“This was my first ever fishing tournament. I’ve fished everywhere else I’ve lived, mostly freshwater, but I was sort of a rookie for surf casting.”

Tedy and his family had just moved into their new Nantucket house in June of 2023. He knew that he would need some help to get the lay of the land. “Where do you go when you’re looking to learn about a new place to fish? You go to the tackle shops and ask for people who would know. On the Cape, it was the guys from Red Top Sporting Goods who showed me how to fish the Cape Cod Canal. Here, I got hooked up with Dan Holmes. He took me and Dante (Tedy’s older son) out shark fishing. We went out again, and I caught stripers, blues, and even a sea robin!” Dan, my fellow beach guide, was a great coach for Tedy. He taught Tedy the basics of casting, the where, when, and how to fish and what to use. It’s very clear that Tedy is grateful for Dan’s excellent guidance. And that he was an apt student.

A couple other island beach warriors helped Tedy take some big steps. “I met Greg (Chotkowski) and Rick (Ramos) when fishing out at Low Beach. They really welcomed me. Greg showed me all about bucktailing and how to fish all through the continued on page 24

Sea Pickles: A Tasty Saltmarsh Indicator

Chicken claws, sea beans, glasswort, sea asparagus—these are all common names for the same plant. With multiple species of glasswort worldwide, these plants are commonly called by their Latin genus, Salicornia. The word “salicornia” actually comes from the Greek “salt horn.” So maybe you can guess where we might find these plants?

The most common glasswort on Nantucket is Salicornia depressa, a small, annual herb typically of mudflats and saltmarshes that we can frequently find on the vegetated beaches of our harbors. Being that it is small and doesn’t have showy flowers or fruits, glasswort is often overlooked and underappreciated. But there are lots of reasons that this plant should be on your radar.

Salicornia plants look like small succulents without spikes. They have been described as having sausage-shaped stems, which is certainly true once you see some. Their simple or branched stems are succulent, hairless, and appear jointed. The opposite leaves are tiny and much reduced, looking like little scales along the fleshy stems. They are varying shades of green, but some can turn bright red in the fall, a rare fall foliage color on Nantucket and a treat to see on the beach!

There are multiple species of Salicornia on Nantucket. Salicornia depressa is the most common and typically what most people encounter. Salicornia bigelovii is dwarfed and less common. Salicornia perennis is a perennial glasswort and less frequently seen on-island. There are a few more, and the taxonomy is changing, but they have a lot of commonalities. They are physically similar to each other and occupy similar habitats, so are often lumped together collectively as Salicornia or by their preferred common name which varies regionally. Salicornia is known as glasswort, pickleweeds, or sea pickles. They are also sometimes called sea asparagus or sea beans, implying their edibility. In a 2016 article by the culinary institution James Beard Foundation, Salicornia was described as “nautical

Our Third Place

So far, in the middle of July, my best beach day featured a hooded sweatshirt, a makeshift wind block, and more than one tumble in a storm-driven surf. Everyone locked into traffic on I-84 would happily trade places with me, but this is not the climate that I, or our visitors, had been hoping for when we looked at the calendar pictures in February.

So, I am hoping for a better few weeks. Let the wind shift, the seals and the sharks continue to play tag up near Great Point and, perhaps, a couple good sand bars growing on the south shore. Then, the toes can find their way back into the sand, and August can be August.

For all of the wonders of Nantucket, from the hydrangea to the houses, the beaches separate us from the rest of the world. That One Big Beach lets you walk the waves from Madaket to Cisco to Ladies to Surfside, to Nobadeer to Madaquecham and points east. Even in the crowd and heat of August, you can find your own space of sand. It is a lot easier to get to an empty beach in August than it is to get to the airport.

Out here, our “Third Place” has sand and seaweed. According to the sociologists, a happy life is divided into three sorts of places. Your tooth paste and toilet paper hang out in your First Place: home. You have the privacy of four walls to disappoint and fail all of those people who love you best in the world. Then, your paycheck comes from your Second Place: work. Your dreams of making this world more fair and more just, get subverted and ground down into the petty dust of invoices, memos, and misunderstanding. In July, work has moved from the kitchen table into the passenger seat of the truck as you creep along Old South Road while the coffee cools and the phone vibrates.

But the beach is the Cheer’s bar, where everybody knows your name. The “Third Place” builds over the summer, as the house and work becomes more fraught. In a “Third Place,” you can connect, you can befriend, you can get a corkscrew if you need one. Third Places don’t keep anyone out, and Third Places

Our Third Place

don’t collect a cover charge. In America, we like beers and wings, so our Third Places tend to have those things. In the rest of the world, those places might be libraries, might be parks, or might be churches. Out here, all three meet at the edge of the water.

If you drive out to Fortieth Pole on a Sunday (and get there early!!), you can meet the community of Nantucket. It is parked as if the beach is on the infield at Daytona—truck after jeep after pickup. You empty the back of all of the towels, chairs, and coolers, plop down onto the sand, and watch the boats go back to the Cape.

Without phones, you can find the people who know you by your true name. They are reading, or playing cards, or napping, or bearing witness to the miracle that is the Nantucket summer. No one is buying anything, selling anything, processing anything, or networking with the stakeholders. The water is warm enough for the timid, shallow enough for standing, and watched enough to prevent misadventure. Every community bears its blights and its blindspots. You do need a four-wheel drive vehicle to get there, as well as a job that lets you take Sunday off. Your life is easier if you can have a conversation with your shirtless fifth grade teacher and you have patience for music outside of your algorithm, but the first rule of community is tolerance. Doja Cat is a lot easier to take with toes in the water and a beer in your hand.

Now, Town Meeting (the one that doesn’t occur on the beach) declared swim suits optional on Nantucket beaches. For as much as I am in full-throated support of this rule, I have yet to see too many people at Fortieth risking sunburn in their delicate places. But I expect it to happen soon. Everyone is showing everything at the beach already, and we

all know where we should be looking. Third Places build community, and community is cemented by tolerance. You may need to let your tolerance bond you to the naked thirtyyear-old sunbather, the Guatemalans enjoying herb, or a waving Trump flag, but you, the island, and the world will be better for it. If the rest of the beach can see my hairy self in my old shorts, I can bear to see a Blue Lives Matter flag.

When the shouty people on the internet start echoing through my head, I try to place myself back at Fortieth. Islanders, Americans, and Humans in general are a lot more tolerant than they pretend to be. One of the most remarkable changes of the last ten years has been the comforting emergence on transsexuals. Men and women, in the wrong bodies, have lived in pain and shame for lifetimes. Now, we have entered a world where the bits and bobs can be exchanged for bobs and bits. Once the plumbing is changed, then the rest of us have to adjust to the new and happier reality. For some, that can be difficult at home (First Place) and at work (Second Place), but it should be easier on the beach. If any place on-island is built on a foundation of tolerance, it was built under Fortieth Pole.

Like all island institutions, Fortieth is threatened. Obviously, local land owners would prefer to have their multimillion dollar love nest free of 1992 Toyota Tacomas, never mind three hundred of them parked cheek by jowl. The ocean and the climate creep up, with new sandbars, more powerful currents, and strong winds. On one local weekend, the lifeguards had almost thirty water rescues. Those inflatable ducks can fly a long way, even with a seventy-pound child clinging to the neck. Finally, you need to still be on Nantucket in order to get out to Fortieth. If work and the economy has pushed you off to Mashpee, you won’t make it to the beach this Sunday.

As long as the beach exists, there is enough island left for islanders like me.

haricots verts.” It’s true that they are a delicious salty snack while walking along the beach or salt marsh edge. However, I think their saltiness lends itself better to a topping on a salad. They can be pickled, as the other common names imply. And their salty goodness has led them to be a fancy food item in some restaurants. Once described as “fishermen’s food,” this delicacy is becoming a trendy garnish in some gourmet establishments. Besides, Salicornia’s nutritional benefits make it a healthy alternative for salt.

Their edibility coupled with Salicornia’s ability to harvest fresh water from salt water environments makes Salicornia potentially useful as an agricultural commodity. It has been proposed that Salicornia production could be a good commodity in areas with limited freshwater. In an agricultural setting, Salicornia can be watered with saltwater thus eliminating the need for freshwater where limited.

There are very few species that can tolerate a salt-water environment. Most of us know that, generally, saltwater isn’t great for plants. However, if you’re a plant that can tolerate salt, there is a lot of available habitat. These halophytic (salt loving) plants have to figure out a way to deal with salt. For Salicornia, not only do they “deal” with the salt, but research has shown that various Salicornia grow much better when salt levels are high—they love it! Like all succulents, Salicornia have enlarged vacuoles that store water. However, these large vacuoles store more than just water. They also store salts, and lots of them. By concentrating salt in their vacuoles, Salicornia are ensuring that they are on the receiving end of the water gradient. Fresh water goes into the cells via osmosis while the salt is sequestered in the vacuoles. This allows Salicornia to occupy areas not available to other plants. It’s cool to think that the same adaptations cacti have for the desert, where there is little water, works for succulents that are surrounded by salt water, but are limited in the availability of fresh water.

Because Salicornia can occupy these harsh environments and are often the first to do so, they are considered a pioneer species of salt marsh systems. As pioneers, they help stabilize the sand or mud and deliver oxygen down through their roots, allowing other species to settle: sea lavender, sedges and grasses, for

continued on page 21

example, which also are halophytic (salt tolerant). The presence of these first plants on the developing saltmarsh will affect the physical conditions allowing other plants to colonize.

Salicornia is also one of the indicator species for saltmarsh, so seeing the plant categorizes that area as salt-marsh or at least a salt water environment. I find this interesting since we recently documented a small population along the banks of the north shore of Long Pond. We know this area to be brackish and expect with sea level rise that the salinity may increase over time, however this is the first salt-loving, halophytic species we have documented in this area. The surrounding species are primarily freshwater or brackish-tolerant. Maybe this small pioneering population of Salicornia is an indicator of changes to come.

Salicornia have a long history of human use as a food and in medicine. One of its common names, glasswort, was given to this resilient saltmarsh plant for it’s use to make glass. When burned, the dried ashes of Salicornia contain potash. Potash is potassium oxide which is used in soaps and glassmaking. In the 18th century, ash from incinerated glasswort was used in the manufacture of soda glass, prized for its crystal clear color.

One potential problem with consuming Salicornia from the wild these days is that, with all of the possible contaminants in the water, it may be wise to steer clear of direct harvesting from certain areas with known water quality issues. Alison Palmer, of UMASS Boston, has conducted research on the Salicornia of Nantucket. She specifically looked at Salicornia’s ability to accumulate toxins and its potential use as a bioremediation tool. When sequestering the salt in their vacuoles, other chemicals can also be sequestered. While not great for consumption, people are looking at Salicornia’s abilities as a way to remove pollutants, specifically heavy metals, from the environment—phytoremediation (plants used for bioremediation). Salicornia can help protect the saltmarshes they live in. On YouTube, you can watch a recording of Alison discussing her work at the UMASS Boston Nantucket Field Station: youtube.com/watch?v=ehMXyLQOKwo.

Salicornia is a very common salt marsh plant throughout New England, and the species is distributed worldwide. On Nantucket, we find it in pockets of vegetation on harbor beaches like Monomoy or the Creeks area off of Washington Street Extension. It is a common plant in salt marshes and is seen as a pioneer species of this habitat. So look for it next time you are out for a walk along the salt marsh edge, along the harbor flats, or the gentle shoreline of Polpis and Nantucket Harbors.

Swim to Fight Cancer

from page 4

to four weekly group swims, the Association is an active supporter of Swim Across America Nantucket. These swimmers have raised more than $500,000 for the annual Swim Across America event held each summer on Nantucket.

This year’s Swim Across America Nantucket event will be held on Saturday, July 27 at Jetties Beach. The Swim attracts more than 250 swimmers, and raises funds for cancer and palliative care on Nantucket through the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket, as well as for important brain tumor research at Mass General Cancer Center. In its twelfth year, the Swim has raised more than $5 million for local cancer treatment, patient care, and cancer research. Last year, Swim Across America Nantucket hit a fundraising record of $730,000.

The Jetties Beach Swim has a category for every age and skill level. There are short distances of 400 yards, a Kids’ Splash, and longer swims of one-half to one mile during the morning of the event. Later in the afternoon on July 27, there will also be a two-mile relay and a four-mile swim. Fourteen Nantucketers will also be raising funds for Swim Across America Nantucket by running in the Falmouth Road Race in August. If you don’t swim, you can still contribute or volunteer for the great cause using the link: www.swimacrossamerica.org/Nantucket

There is something special about this event morning: the Swim brings people of all abilities together to support those confronted by cancer. The funds raised support six on-island oncology nurses and two palliative care nurses, as well as bringing world-class oncologists to the island on a weekly basis. Full scale cancer services are now available on Nantucket due in large measure from this annual fundraiser. Palliative care is free of charge to island residents and visitors because of these dedicated swimmers.

Lifeguards and Swim Angels are available at the event to help participants. “Swim Across America Nantucket is a vibrant and healthy way to support our nurses and healthcare workers, and show those battling cancer they have an entire island supporting them. This is a memorable and meaningful morning for everyone who participates,” said Co-Event Director, Jill Roethke. Come to Jetties Beach on Saturday, July 27 and dive in to fight cancer.

from page 5

Tedy also learned about the August Blues Tournament from Greg and Rick. This tournament was created to raise money to help support The Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, an organization dedicated to ending Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Greg and Rick put their hearts and souls into getting the tournament off the ground. It was no small task. Greg had developed the idea of the contest as a way to honor his son, Augie, who has DMD. Rick and many others in our awesome fishing community jumped in to help in any way they could. People volunteered to organize, sponsor, manage, and support this cause. In spite of all odds, the tournament took off. The competition was hot and the participants had a blast.

“I heard about the cause, and I was all in. It was all new to me: catch the fish, measure it, take the picture, send it in. Wow!” Tedy loved the competition and fished it very hard. And a very cool thing happened along the way. Tedy went from being known as the amazing professional football player to being seen as a solid, skilled fisher who earned his place on the tournament leaderboard—he was no longer a rookie.

The 2024 August Blues Tournament, Nantucket’s summer fishing event, is ready for liftoff. This tournament has a place for every fisher: beach, boat, and juniors (age 17 and younger). Thanks to the sponsorship by Nantucket Oral Surgery, the junior fishers can participate for free. All that a junior angler needs to do is submit their catch to be entered. One of the tournament goals in 2024 is to get the next generation of fishers started. There’s so many great prizes available in the junior category to make this happen. I’m counting on my Nantucket Goonies to submit a load of fish and represent! There’s also a fun new family event in this year’s tournament.

Prizes will also be awarded for the first bonito, the first false albacore, the smallest bluefish, and the unicorn fish (a fish caught that is not commonly found in the Nantucket fishery).

The emphasis is always on the fun in this tournament, but the cause that gave rise to it is very serious cause. Proceeds from the August Blues tournament help fund Parents Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). From parentprojectmd.org: “Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy fights to end Duchenne. We accelerate research, raise our voices to impact policy, demand optimal care for every single family, and strive to ensure access to approved therapies.”

Greg and Augie recently took a long road trip to Orlando, FL for the annual PPMD

gathering. I spoke with Pat Furlong, the President and CEO of PPMD. Pat was amazed by what the Nantucket fishing community achieved last year, raising $15,000! Pat told me, “I’ve known Greg and Augie for years. Greg is so very kind and innovative. A person needs a lot of creativity to care for someone with Duchenne.” Pat thought that the tournament idea was perfect: “We’re all fishing for treatments and cures.”

So how exactly did Tedy and I end up in our quest for the top spots in the 2023, you ask? Well, work rudely interrupted Tedy’s beach fishing, as he had to take to the road in his job as an analyst for the Sunday NFL Countdown on ESPN, a role he’s had since 2009. That allowed my brother, Bill Tornovish, to sneak in and capture the Triple Strike title with 100.50 total inches.

And as for me? Well, my arch nemesis, Gray Malitsky, pulled in a gator bluefish that measured 36.5 inches and knocked me into second place. Whomp, whomp, whomp… For those who don’t know Gray, he’s an awesome young fisher who will be starting his freshman year at Colby College this September. Until then, you can meet him at either Bill Fisher Tackle or on the beach at Great Point, where he specializes in humbling cocky old fishing dudes.

I asked Tedy how Coach Bill Belichick would evaluate his current beach fishing game. “How would he scout me? Hmmm…. Casting has improved, still needs work on the bucktailing game. Knows how to work the water, still has a lot of work to do, plenty of room for improvement.” Tedy strives to get better every time he hits the beach. He has also stepped up to help support PPMD through the August Blues Tournament by donating the autographed red New England Patriots jersey pictured here. This jersey will be awarded to the beach angler with the longest bluefish in the 2024 tournament. Thus, that prize will now be known as the BruFish award!

Please sign up today at Augustbluesnantucket.com and have a fantastic month of fishing for a great cause!

Steve “Tuna” Tornovish is a Nantucket native who has spent his life fishing from the beaches of his beloved island. He loves to introduce clients to the joy of fishing with his Nantucket Island Fishing Adventures: stevetuna.com

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
