Sunday is Family Adventure Day This Sunday, July 12, from 10 am to 12 noon, families can journey into Nantucket’s past through an interactive exploration of the Oldest House at 16 Sunset Hill with staff of the Nantucket Historical Association. Visitors will learn about colonial lifestyles by making aromatic herb sachets, button buzzer whirligigs, and miniature models of the Oldest House. There will also be summer refreshments that the whole family can enjoy, as well as tours of the house and the kitchen garden. Built in 1686 and also known as the Jethro Coffin House, it is the oldest house on Nantucket that was built as a dwelling and stands on its original site. A structure from the island’s original seventeenth-century English settlement, it was a wedding gift for Jethro Coffin and Mary Gardner. The house was acquired by the NHA in 1923. “Family Adventure Day at the Oldest House is a quintessential family summer program,” says Marjan Shirzad, NHA Director of Visitor Experience. “We are delighted to offer this opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience the simple pleasures of summers past at the idyllic Oldest House property.” Admission is $5 per child and free for accompanying adults. All ages are welcome.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
It’s a Small Island by Robert P. Barsanti The ocean has bestowed some special gifts on Fisherman’s Beach this summer. Sometime over the spring, the currents off shore shifted and built up a flat, gently sloping beach. So, in July, you can walk out thirty yards into the water and still be only two feet deep in the Atlantic. On this particular day in early July, more gifts came in from the sea. Somewhere, off to our southwest, deep sea swells came into this world and then came up to the shore, only to momentarily tower head high before collapsing onto this long beach. The clouds had cleared, the sun burned, and the sea didn’t so much as roll as toppled and crashed onto the beach. The boys spent hours getting bumped, boiled, and beaten in the surf. They rose to the top of the waves, then settled behind the rolling crest, or they ducked under the white, pounding foam to pop up on the other side. And, as is the peculiar direction of one of my sons, he placed himself so as to receive the apex of the waves’ power, which then swept and rolled him into the shore. When he left the water, he was swaddled in pounds of sand. He wasn’t alone. The beach was as full as a July beach can be. We sat in our polite little clumps, arrayed with boogie boards, umbrellas, and Kadima paddles. No radios blasted Miley, Tay-Tay, or Fifty Cent. The dogs were settled under their masters’ chairs and lapped from discreet water bowls. The one percent successfully resisted fencing off a fifty-yard section and setting up bottle service. If incivility was to be found, it came on the occasional whiff of a cigar. Nantucket cannot function without civility. We do not have the highways, fences, and hedges of Long Island, nor do we have the laws, parking lots, beach walls of Hampton Beach. Instead, we live on an island that can support one tenth of the people lucky enough to wake up here on a summer day. The roads, paths, and beaches cannot survive the aggressive assertion of rights and privilege that the rest of the country likes to wave back and forth. On island, you do well if you assume you are a houseguest overstaying your invitation because the weather is so beautiful. The richest capitalists on Wall Street find themselves taking turns and considering others on a Nantucket continued on page 24

Director, University of Massachusetts Nantucket Field Station (see yesterdaysisland.com for expanded article, website links, & notations)
One of the many luxuries that Nantucket visitors can experience is the chance to see a humpback whale, and just a few weeks ago we had one cavorting very close to the island in the shallow water to the west of the spit of sand that leads to Great Point. Humpback populations on the western side of the Atlantic Ocean are doing well, which enables us to encounter more of them offshore. Unfortunately, we also see some deceased individuals wash ashore, like the 25-foot juvenile who was found dead off Miacomet Beach around last Thanksgiving. The past two years have been boon years for spotting humpbacks, with some tours along Stellwagen Bank and east of Nantucket seeing 10-40 humpbacks in one day in 2014, and large groups of humpbacks with some right whales and finwhales for good measure cropping up this spring off the Cape. Marine mammal and fishery experts suspect that an increase in sand lance populations is fueling these large numbers of humpbacks visiting New England. I first learned about the sand lance/humpback connection in a Boston Globe article from last May, which reported a plethora of humpback whale sightings with what may be a record 40 animals seen in one day near Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, which is a rich feeding ground for whales about 25 miles east of Boston, just north of the tip of Cape Cod. For several years, the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station has collaborated with the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) in Provincetown. CCS scientists are New England area experts on a variety of marine mammals. Information about their programs, which include some very long-term studies on a large number of individual humpbacks, can be found at coastalstudies.org/programs/humpbackwhale-research. From the CCS site: “The cornerstone of our research is the Gulf of Maine humpback whale population, which has been under continuous study since the 1970s. CCS is the only institution to routinely monitor this population across continued on page 18

An Evening of Art and Luxury Jane’s Vanity is bringing the latest seasonal collections of hand-crafted European lingerie, loungewear, and accessories to Hostetler Gallery at 42 Centre Street for an exclusive two-day trunk show. Be surrounded by David Hostetler paintings that incorporate actual women’s lingerie and prints of lingerie images, while shopping for the newest romantic styles from Paris and beyond. Let Jane herself assist you in finding the perfect lacey treat, for yourself or a loved one. Jane's Vanity is devoted to beauty, grace, and form. Jane and Emily regularly travel the international markets of London, Paris, and Milan to hand select the current seasonal offerings. From exciting new talent to independent fashion houses, some existing for well over one hundred years, they look for meticulous attention to detail, a luxurious hand, and a spark of genius. Some of the lines represented at the event will include loungewear from Morpho + Luna, Elise Anderegg, and Alöe; lingerie from Valery Prestige, Dana Pisarra and Madame Aime; scarves and shawls from Klements and Ambas; and hosiery from Falke and Barazandeh. These cultivated collections are the pinnacle of European craftsmanship: hand produced in small seasonal collections, using the highest quality of materials and construction. David Hostetler created an entire series of paintings inspired by the mystery and erotic expression that lingerie reveals. He has layered real underwear and bras to the canvases and layered paint over and under to create his paintings. His prints used actual underwear that is painted and pressed onto the paper with verbiage to confront viewer with the complex and ambiguous eroticism of all types of lingerie. “Nothing equals the voluptuous power of feminine underwear,” declared the Baronne d’Orchamps in her 1907 book Tous Les Secrets de la Femme. Experience it for yourself this weekend at Exposed: Art & Lingerie in the Hostetler Gallery. Friday, July 10 Opening Party from 5 to 10 pm, with models & refreshments. Saturday, July 11 from 10am to 5pm, continue shopping the collection.

Making the Unthinkable Real Darth Vader posing in front of a Chanel logo and C-3PO bathed in Louis Vuitton are just two of the characters featured in the series LEGO Wars, where Star Wars figurines fuse with the world of fashion. The artist behind the camera is Dale May, an award-winning advertising, entertainment, and editorial photographer who has been creating iconic images for over 18 years. “Combining his background in painting and color theory, lighting and post production, Dale works with the inspiration to make the unthinkable real, as well as believable.” Dale May’s love of stylized fashion photography makes this LEGO Star Wars series clever and surprising. Come by the Samuel Owen Gallery at 46 Center Street this week to see Darth Vader’s X-Ray and Princess Leia giving a playful wink. The Artist Reception will be held on Friday, July 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, with drinks by Cisco Brewery and music by Audio Architects. Samuel Owen Gallery at Seven Seas is new to Nantucket with a permanent collection in Greenwich, CT. The art gallery represents 25 different contemporary artists including Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Eric Zener, Mr. Brainwash, Dale May, and Peter Tunney. With more than 20 years of experience in the art business, owners Lee and Cindy Milazzo share an unerring eye for unique and engaging contemporary art. Art Opening and Demonstration This weekend, one of Nantucket’s best-known painters will be featured at a special demonstration, artist reception, and exhibition in Sosebee Studio & Fine Art Gallery at 8 Washington Street, just a few steps off Main Street, across from the Artists Association Gallery and The Handlebar Café. Member of the Nantucket art community since the 1960s, Barbara Capizzo taught on the island and maintained her own gallery for many years. Capizzo paints the quaint streets, beautiful harbors, boats, and beaches of Nantucket in watercolor and oils. “When I’m painting, it’s a calm, peaceful time for me...I lose my stress...sometimes I just can’t wait to get my easel out and paint!” She is a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Sarasota Arts Council and Visual Arts Center, and a lifelong member of the Nantucket Artists Association. The exhibition of her work in Sosebee Studio & Fine Art Gallery will open on Friday, July 10 with a reception from 6 to 8 pm. The following morning, Capizzo will demonstrate her technique in a special workshop from 10 am to 12 noon; to register call the gallery at 508-228-0014.

NANTUCKET HISTORY
Ocean Bathing for Health & Recreation by Amy Jenness author of On This Day in Nantucket History, available at Mitchell’s Book Corner
A floating bathing house opened off South Wharf the second week of July in 1827. The house was supported on two pontoons and had eight 5 x 7 foot rooms and one 11 x 12 foot room. The Nantucket Journal reported, “It is a tight warm building and well calculated to impart additional interest to the healthful and manly art of swimming.” The South Wharf bathing house was open for ladies on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 1 to 6 pm. The house was open to gentlemen the rest of the week and cost $2 for the season. In a letter to the editor that September, a writer signed “S.” extolled the virtues of swimming in the ocean. “It is indeed an interesting, if not sublime sight when the waves run high and roll their surges on the shore, to behold man, feeble in body, but capacious in mind, in courage invincible, plunging through the surf and buffeting the proud billows.” Swimming in the ocean, along with drinking sea water, was believed to cure disease in the 18th century. In 1753, Dr. Charles Russel published The Uses of Sea Water which recommended the use of sea water for healing various diseases, and William Buchan wrote his 1769 book Domestic Medicine advocating the practice. Sea bathing and sea water were advocated with winter considered to be the best time to follow the practice. Buchan's book was published until 1846 and was translated into many languages. By the 19th century, water treatments at hot springs and at the ocean were popular and Nantucket, looking to create a tourist industry, marketed itself as perfect for place for health and rejuvenation. Etiquette and beliefs about how the body worked made sea bathing a pri-

The day the war ended was a day that brought relief and happiness to Miss Penelope Green. She was happy that the Union won, but her real excitement was the news that Andrew Boardman was coming home. She had known Andrew her entire life. They had grown up together, running through the woods, playing in the ocean. The day that he had joined the army was one of the saddest days of her life. Penelope could still remember October 22, 1861, the day that Andrew joined the 5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He traveled by train to Concord, where the Infantry was being organized. She remembers waving goodbye on the small platform for Portsmouth, the salty air blowing around her and mingling with the salinity of her tears as she wondered if she would ever see the boy she held closest to her heart again. Every time the mail came, for 4 years, she had prayed that she wouldn’t pick up old Mrs. Boardman’s mail at the post office for her, as she usually did, and see, instead of a letter from Andrew, a government-marked letter that everyone knew meant death. Every Sunday she went to the little chapel on the seashore, attending the less populated and less known service there. The rest of the town would be attending the service at St. John’s in town. Penelope liked this little chapel because it was a place that she had shared with Andrew. They stumbled upon the tiny building after walking along the Great Bay. They had started their trek early in the morning, following the curved edge of the bay. The day was warm and beautiful, with big puffy clouds spotting the blue of the sky. Andrew and Penelope witnessed Mother Nature wake up. The fish jumped in the bay. Frogs started croaking, making a melody. Sparrow hawks were soaring in the the sky, swooping and spiraling. At noon the kids had continued on page 31

Our next discussion: July 16th How to Have that Difficult Conversation
I love watching the harbor fill up, slowly over weeks and weeks. It starts with a handful of barely noticeable sailboats and motor boats, then it seems like overnight that the harbor explodes with hundreds of white masts and hulls. Nantucket on the water is one its greatest treats. Sailing on the Endeavor or hopping a ride to Topper’s on the Wauwinet Lady, spending the day on a charter fishing boat, looking for seals or whales on Shearwater, renting a kayak, or a stand up paddleboard cruise in the harbor. The possibilities for experiencing Nantucket’s open waters are endless! If you find yourself with an opportunity to go for an over sea adventure, planning ahead for lunch or dinner on the water is essential. Here are some tips and tricks to make your boating picnic a successful one! Unless you are lucky enough to have your boat right off the docks of Straight Wharf, the weight of your picnic is something to consider, since you will most likely be lugging it down, around, aboard, and back. Chinese take out containers are great for picnics since they are so light and stackable. Glass bottles and glassware are usually a no-no on board, so make sure to take wine or beer in collapsable cartons or cans. Or pick up some shatterproof Go Vino glasses from Epernay at 1 North Beach Street.

It's time to take out your magnifying glasses, and keep your eyes peeled because Find Waldo is on Nantucket this month! The fictional character and childhood book phenomenon, “Waldo,” is hiding in more than 20 local businesses during July, waiting to be found. With his distinctive red-and-whitestriped shirt, bobble hat, and glasses, Waldo should be easy to spot. Before you get started on your adventure be sure to stop by Mitchell's Book Corner at 54 Main Street to pick up a "Find Waldo Local in Nantucket!" passport. Laura Wasserman, Event Coordinator/ Manager, co-organized the event on Nantucket along with other staff members. The Where’s Waldo challenge was originally started by book publisher Candlewick Press. Wasserman says, “this is just a really fun activity for the kids; they love it and the businesses love it too.” As July heats up, so will the competition! Participants should be sure to find as many Waldos as possible in order to obtain great prizes. When you have 8 different cards, bring them to Mitchell's Book Corner and if you are one of the first hundred to do so, you’ll get a Waldo button. Collecting 16 of the possible 20 cards will ensure you a Waldo button and makes you eligible to win the drawing for a 6-book deluxe set of the Waldo books and other great prizes. Wasserman adds: “this is a fun activity for the kids which is our number one concern, it will hopefully promote reading and interest in books as well as fictional characters, in addition to bringing people into the book store really helping to encourage kids to read.” On July 31 at 11 am, the challenge concludes with a celebration at Mitchells Book Corner.

vate affair for many until the mid 1800s. People remained heavily dressed when they swam, and men and women went separately. Bathers also believed the body could not tolerate extreme temperatures. An 1822 item in the Inquirer & Mirror said, “A boy died very suddenly last Monday at Stamford, Con., in consequence of going into the water to bathe, while his blood was overheated, Let this be a caution to parents how they permit their children to bathe in the middle of the day, in the broiling hot sun. Nothing can be more prejudicial to health.” By the 1860s swimming at the beach was popular as a recreational activity. Charles Hayden opened the Clean Shore Bath House under the Cliff on the north shore. He offered 21 rooms and said in an advertisement, “every inducement will be offered to make them a place of popular resort.” In the 1882 book The Island of Nantucket: What it was and what it is: Being a Complete Index offered this assessment, “The bathing facilities of the island are good and include both still water and surf bathing. Good surf bathing can be found only at Sconset and Wauwinet, each of which localities is about seven and one half miles from town. There is a bath house at the Clean Shore PHOTO COURTESY NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION which is reached by a road branching from Steamboat Wharf. If desired one can get here at all times a warm salt water bath which for certain diseases is considered very beneficial. The price charged for a warm salt water bath is twenty five cents and for an ordinary sea bath twenty cents which includes the use of a room and a

bathing suit. There are also two bathing establishments at the Cliff the prices for bathing being the same as at the Clean Shore. Later a Miss Hayden opened Hayden’s Warm Salt Water Bath Rooms which offered indoor, heated baths full of ocean water (when the tide was high) on the first floor and lodging rooms on the second. Hayden’s Warm Salt Water Baths was first located on North Water Street about where the Nantucket Yacht Club sits today and later moved to Easy Street. In 1910 Grace Hemingway brought her 11-year-old son Ernest to Nantucket for a month, and young Ernest swam in the ocean for the first time. He delighted in the swimming at the beach and went every day. His mother preferred the comfort of Hayden’s hot water bath and visited that establishment every day. Later Hemingway would recall his Nantucket adventures with his mother saying, “"I'd go in with the kelp and the horseshoe crabs, and you'd swim in salt water baths. In 1890, a new, 50 room bath house opened on the north shore of Coatue. The bathing pavilion included a covered look out for viewing, and the owners planned to moor a large barge there to be used as a floating bath with 120 more rooms as well as diving boards and a “toboggan slide for swimming in deep water. Patrons would be shuttled from Steamboat Wharf to Coatue by the steamship Coskata. In 1905, developer Clifford Folger replaced simple bath houses at Jetties Beach with an ornate complex of buildings that included a main building with a covered piazza, a dining room, four apartments on the second floor and two wings (one for men and one for women) that offered 150 bathing rooms. The wings offered changing areas, showers, and toilets, and patrons could bring their own swim suits or rent one. The main building and one wing of Folger’s bathing pavilion still stand at Jetties Beach. In 1906, island businessmen built a "Bathing Pavilion," on Sconset beach. Believed to be the first swimming pool constructed on the island, the pavilion offered heated and cold pools with both salt water and fresh water, as well as bath-houses and showers. The Sconset pavilion existed for about ten years and in 1919 was turned into a residence.

its feeding range in both U.S. and Canadian waters. Our Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog is a synthesis of more than three decades of research on unique individuals. It combines detailed data on life history, behavior, spatial distribution, human impacts and laboratory studies such as molecular genetics. The catalog is the foundation of our Gulf of Maine research and is meticulously curated and updated to maintain its unique scientific value. New techniques for determining pregnancy, health, age and relatedness in large whales are also being developed and ground-truthed with these data.” Most recently the Center for Coastal Studies has started to record whale breathing in the field in the wild above their blowholes! How cool is that? And last but not least, at the end of April, CCS was involved in freeing a severely entangled humpback whale. Their team is one of the best trained disentanglement teams in the country. So let’s start at the beginning and learn a bit more about these gentle giants. From the American Cetacean Fact Sheet we find that the scientific name for a humpback whale is Megaptera novaeangliae. Humpbacks are in the class Mammalia; order Cetacea (Marine Mammals), Suborder Mysticeti (from a translation error from Aristotle for “the mouse, the whale so called”) and Family Balaenopteridae (Baleen Whales). The humpback whale is one of the rorquals, a family that also includes the blue whale, fin whale, Bryde's whale, sei whale, and minke whale. The term “rorqual” is French, which itself derives from the Norwegian word røyrkval, meaning "furrow whale.” Rorquals have two characteristics in common: dorsal fins on their backs, and ventral pleats running from the tip of the lower jaw back to the belly area. These ventral pleats are longitudinal folds of skin that allow the mouth to expand immensely when feeding. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. The long pectoral fins give the humpback the genus name, Megaptera which come from the Greek word “mega” for "giant" and “ptera” for "wing” (very “dinosaurian” sounding). The humpback whale’s flippers are the largest appendage of any animal at up to 5m in length! The humpback whale was first identified as "baleine de la Nouvelle Angleterre" by Mathurin Jacques Brisson in his Regnum Animale of 1756. The common name is derived from the curving of their back continued on page 23

when diving. The species name means "New Englander" and was probably given by Brisson due the regular sightings of humpbacks off the coast of New England. The long black and white tail fin (fluke), which can be up to a third of body length, and the pectoral fins have unique patterns, which make individual whales identifiable. Several hypotheses attempt to explain the humpback's pectoral fins, which are proportionally the longest fins of any cetacean. The two most enduring mention the higher maneuverability afforded by long fins, and the usefulness of the increased surface area for temperature control when migrating between warm and cold climates. Humpbacks also have “rete mirable,” Latin for “wonderful net,” a heat exchanging system of closely aligned arteries and veins found in humpbacks, sharks, and fish and used to transport heat or oxygen or stabilize and control metabolism. The shape and color pattern on the humpback whale's dorsal fin and flukes are as individual in each animal as fingerprints are in humans. This unique morphology that can be observed by sight allows scientists to create photo-identification inventories of individuals in order to not only identify them but also to track their movements and monitor their populations. This ability to distinguish humpback whales provides information about their population, migration, sexual maturity, and behavior patterns. A photographic catalog of all known North Atlantic whales was developed and is currently maintained by College of the Atlantic at coa.edu/nahwc.htm Adult male humpback whales measure 40-48 feet long (12.2-14.6 m) and adult females are slightly bigger, averaging 45-50 feet (13.7-15.2 m) long. They weigh 25 to 40 tons (22,680-36,287 kg). Humpback whales feed on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, and various kinds of small fish like sardines and herring. Each whale eats up to 1-1/2 tons (1,361 kg) of food a day. These baleen whales have a series of 270-400 fringed overlapping plates hanging from each side of the upper jaw, where teeth might otherwise be located. These plates consist of a fingernail-like material called keratin that frays out into fine hairs on the ends inside the mouth near the tongue. The plates are black and measure about 30 inches (76 cm) in length. During feeding, large volumes of water and food can be taken into the continued on page 29

beach. After several hours in the surf, we collected our gear and trooped back up to the car. In the small parking lot, we had gotten lucky with a slot that backed up to the prickers and the poison ivy. While we loaded the gear and the sand into the back, a silver Hummer with NJ plates waited nearby. He wasn’t waiting for a parking place. By that time in the afternoon, several slots were open. However, he was blocking the traffic pattern. Someone pointed this out to him, at which point, he surrendered to public perception of a Hummer with New Jersey plates and reversed into a Toyota sedan. He rolled forward, looked back, and reversed again into the fifteen year old car. Now sure of our attention, he accelerated out of the parking lot and out towards Surfside Road. We can imagine what happens next. He drives on through the Surfside stop sign, barrels though Five Corners, rolls into downtown, and is stopped dead at the water’s edge. Then, someone dear calls him from the Fisherman’s Lot and wonders where he has gotten himself to? It’s a small island, and it gets a lot smaller if you are a jerk. For that reason, the jerks don’t last long out here. On the mainland, you can always leave the scene of the crime. On Nantucket, you circle back to it over and over again. could drive away into the safe anonymity of the highway and the mall. On Nantucket, all roads lead back to the rotary. Nonetheless, it takes a certain amount of time for the jerks to realize that they have to change or leave. And, in that certain amount of time, the island has to show some patience and some fortitude. The island has a learning curve. I spent my first months on Nantucket biking the wrong way on one way streets until someone pulled me aside in the faculty room and hit me with the “Could we have a word…” You can’t come to a five-way stop sign and just barrel through unless you want to wind up under a Marine Home Center truck. The man you cut in front at the Juice Bar will be serving you clam chowder in an hour. And the man whom you cut off in the parking lot will be looking to hire a house painter, like you, tomorrow. No matter how much money or how long you have lived here, it remains a small island. Anonymity is the first thing to go (right after a twenty dollar bill). Eventually, the long arc of island living bends to civility. Even the Fourth of July celebrates it. No matter how expensive your hat, how well you know the firemen, or how fine your bloomers, you will get soaked on Main Street. The blessings of the island, the richness of our water table, and the narrowness of the street demands it. Even the 6,000 drunken revelers at Nobadeer on the Fourth showed how well they can learn the ways of the island. On Sunday, July Fifth, the Clean Team showed up to what has historically been a fantastic wreck only to find most of the trash safely piled up in dumpsters. If the millennial ravers can clean up for themselves, there must be hope for the rest of us, even if we own a silver Hummer from New Jersey.

Eye on Style

I have had the opportunity this season to talk to some incredibly inspiring and interesting people, and Clay Twombly is definitely one of those people. I first met Clay at the Sustainable Nantucket Farmers and Artisans Market where we are both vendors, and this week I was fortunate enough to take some time to sit down with him in his shop and get to know him a little better. In 2012 Clay suffered two heartbreaking losses, his mother to cancer and his partner to suicide. Still grieving, he took a trip to London to visit a friend who happened to be attending classes in jewelry making. It was here that he learned about beading and tying macrame bracelets. He found that the process of tying and using both hands rhythmically was therapeutic and meditative, a way to stay grounded during a difficult time. He continued tying and knotting and taught himself how to make malas or prayer beads, a natural progression in his practice of yoga and meditation. As he began to learn more about the stones he was using to tie his malas, he realized he was drawn to stones that he needed in order to help himself along with the grieving process – stones that are associated with healing, grief, grounding, and transformation. Clay describes this attraction to certain stones as food for the soul, when your body needs a certain nutrient it craves carrots or kale or whatever it is missing to sustain it; and it’s the same for the stones, you are attracted to their healing or balancing properties. Something that was born out of grief transformed into a new life direction for Clay and he began to share his loss, love, and creativity with others. People started noticing his beautiful malas and made requests for their own. After working in retail for 18 years, selling his handmade products felt like the right step. When you climb the stairs to his shop and studio at 2 Union Street you leave the hustle and bustle of town behind you and enter a quiet and calming sanctuary. Clay allows his customers time to browse and respond to the stones, and it is when you find something that you are drawn to that he will tell you the meaning behind it. He finds that many people are attracted to calming stones, reminding them to take a breath and relax during their busy days. Others are drawn to pieces that they think are pretty, and he emphasizes that there is nothing wrong with that. Something beautiful and pleasing to the eye can be just as healing or fulfilling. To make his prayer beads and jewelry, Clay

uses semiprecious gemstones as well as sandalwood beads sourced from the holy city of Vrindavan, India that are made by some of the 20,000 widows who find refuge there. Some of my favorites pieces are the collaborations he has done with island jewelers and artists Megan Anderson, Melissa Dudley, Jessica Hicks, and Nell Van Vorst. Each artist has created different pendants to adorn Clay’s beads, making each one unique. In addition to the prayer beads and jewelry, Clay fills his shop with items that inspire him and are made with intention. You can find artwork from local artists Jessica Sosebee and Sharon Sterk, flower essences from island Lama Yeshe Palmo, and repurposed and upcycled clothing by Casey Sayre Bokus. He also discovers things for the store through travel and meeting new and interesting people who are creating things that hold a special meaning. Clay Twombly’s shop is located upstairs at 2 Union Street, just around the corner from Main Street. He is open Monday through Friday from 11am to 5pm. You can also find him at the Sustainable Nantucket Farmers and Artisans Market on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. This weekend is the annual Nantucket Yoga Festival and Clay will be selling his malas there as well. Look for him on Saturday, July 11th from 8am-6pm and Sunday, July 12th from 10am-6pm in the tent at Bartlett’s Farm.

mouth because the pleated grooves in the throat expand. As the mouth closes, water is expelled through the baleen plates, which trap the food on the inside near the tongue to be swallowed. They were recently discovered to use an ingenious “bubble net” technique to encircle fish that they drive into the net in order to herd large groups of fish into a tighter ball that they can then swim underneath and engulf in one giant swallow. They usually do this as a group, but can do it alone if needed. These video links shows the awesome beauty and precision of this method of corralling fish: pbs.org/wnet/nature/fellowship-of-the-whales-video-cooperative-feeding/5324/ and www.arkive.org/humpback-whale/megaptera-novaeangliae/video-08b.html. If the second one reminds you of the sandworms in Dune, you are not alone, that is the first thing that came to mind when I saw that amazing video; the sheer size of their mouths and the massive pleats are hard to miss. Because their feeding, mating, and calving grounds are close to shore and because they are slow swimmers, humpback whales were an easy target for early whalers. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) gave them worldwide protection status in 1966, but there were large illegal kills until the 1970s. Population estimates vary from 35,000 to 70,000 individuals, depending on the source. The humpback whale completes the longest annual migration of any mammal, travelling from polar regions to the tropics and back each year. The humpbacks we see spend their spring, summer, and fall months in northern waters. Late in the year, humpbacks migrate to the waters of the West Indies, where they mate and bear their calves. There are about 550 humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine, many of which frequent Cape Cod waters. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in April of this year proposed to remove a majority (10 of the 14 groups) of the world's populations of humpback whales from the endangered species list, including the West Indies population that swims in Cape waters. It is important to remember that all marine mammals are protected under the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act and humpbacks would remain protected under that Act. Concern about the population revolves around protecting females and their calves from entanglement and unnecessary death. Females typically breed every two or three years. The gestation period is 11.5 months, yet some individuals have been known to breed in two consecutive years. The peak months for birth are January, February, July, and August. There is usually a 1-2 year period between hump-

back births. Both male and female humpback whales vocalize; however, only males produce the long, loud, complex "songs" for which the species is famous. Cetaceans have no vocal cords, so they make their famous songs by blowing air through their nasal cavities (basically glorified snoring!). The humpback whale lifespan ranges from 45–100 years which gives them plenty of snoring time. Whales in the same population sing the same song. There are many theories as to why males sing. They may be trying to impress a female, warn off another male, find other whales to set up a hunting group, or use it for echolocation. Perhaps they are bored. I highly recommend that you go online and listen to one of the many audio files of humpback whales songs if you are one of the two people in American who have not heard them. Their eerie, haunting songs have captivated researchers and the public for years. Humpbacks whales’ spectacular breaching maneuvers, their curiosity and “friendliness” in approaching whale watching boats, and their amazing feeding behaviors have made them an ideal whale for ecotourism and whale watching. I highly recommend taking a trip on Shearwater Excursion (shearwaterexcursions.com/) boats that go east off Nantucket. Captain Blair Perkins is extremely knowledgeable and a big friend of science, as his company provides the Nantucket Field Station with year-round research vessel access. Boaters who see marine animals including whales and sea turtles in distress are encouraged to call the MAER hotline at 800-900-3622 or report the animal to the United States Coast Guard via VHF 16. Callers are asked to stay with the animal at a safe distance until help arrives. Since 1984, the Center for Coastal Studies has freed more than 200 large whales and other marine animals from life threatening entanglements, using techniques developed by Center staff. For many years, CCS was the only organization on the east coast of the United States to be federally authorized, by National Marine Fisheries Service, to disentangle large, free swimming whales, such as the humpback and the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. CCS rescue work is done under NOAA authorization. Currently here on Nantucket a group of several organizations are working with NOAA to obtain authorization to respond to simple on-land (not off-shore) strandings. In the meantime, all seal strandings (when the seal is obviously distressed or wounded) and dolphin, whale, and other cetacean reports and calls should be made to the MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING HOTLINE: 866-755-NOAA (6622). You can learn more about local education efforts to protect whales and teach the public about them from the Nantucket Marine Mammal Conservation Program www.nantucketmarinemammals.org. Representatives can often be found at a booth at the downtown Sustainable Nantucket Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market.

stopped in a shaded clearing for their lunches. As Penelope bit into an apple taken from Andrew’s mother's orchard, she noticed Andrew staring intently down the seashore, squinting his eyes. “What are you looking at? she inquired. He started, jumping and blinking fast in surprise. “Oh! I think I see something down the shore. It looks like a shack, He answered, turning back to look at the mysterious structure, wrinkling his brow. “What are we waiting for? Penelope said mischievously. She raised an eyebrow at him. When Andrew returned her grin with a match, the sixteen year olds sprinted down the beach towards the shack. Breathing heavily and rosycheeked, the pair stopped at the entrance to The Chapel on the Sand. A sign showing the name of the chapel was nailed above the entrance. A detailed hand-painted cross was the only ornament to the exterior of the chapel other than the sign. Andrew and Penelope waited a moment before entering the one room chapel. The windows were clear glass in the walls that showed the shimmering water, with the exception of the simple stained glass window over the altar of a dove carrying a leaf. There were only two rows of pews, but they took up most of the room. The walls were painted white, and was cracked and chipped. The altar was a podium with a metal cross attached to the front. To Penelope, it looked like perfection. As they walked down the aisle to the altar, their hands somehow became enclasped. Penelope pretended not to notice, and she knew Andrew did the same. “Hello children, A voice from behind them said, startling them, and causing them both to blush. When they turned around they saw the owner of the voice. A small priest was in front of them with a trusting smile on his lips. “We’re sorry for intruding, Father, Andrew began, “But we saw the chapel from afar and were curious to what it might be.

“There is no need for apology, my son. The Chapel is always open to visitors. What are your names? I am Father Pines.” “I am Andrew Boardman, and my friend here is Penelope Rose. We love the chapel.” “It has certain... bonuses to it’s solitude,” Father Pines said, with a knowing smile, causing the two of them to blush even more. Penelope thought about that day often when Andrew was away. She wondered what might’ve happened had Andrew not left for the army two months later. She also thought about the night before he left, when they had talked for hours in the chapel. She had made a promise to him, and him to her. And so, almost 4 years later, she waited on the same platform she had the day of the ocean tears. The early June sun was starting its climb, and the upside-down, heart-shaped Great Bay shined like warm silver. A gaggle of other women and children waited alongside her, most excited, but others had somber looks on their faces, and black on their bodies. There was a rustling of the crowd as they spotted a slowly growing smokestack coming along the rails. This was the moment they had been waiting for for 4 years. The black engine came chugging into the station, and the heads of men poked out of the windows, calling out loved ones’ names. The doors opened and about twenty men poured out. Penelope searched for that brown hair and blue eyes she had missed for so long, but she couldn’t see him in the crowd. All around her, people reunited, she saw old friends; Thomas Driver, who lived next door to her, and the shopkeeper’s son William Enger. Her panic was growing as she looked and looked. He had said he would be on this train in his last letter, so where was he? As the train started its departure, she was about to yell at it to stop when she suddenly spotted a familiar head making his way through the crowd. She walked towards him also, until they pushed into an open space. She ran at him and jumped into his arms. He swung her around and then set her continued on page 33

down. “Did you miss me?” Andrew said, a cheeky grin on his face. “Nope,” she said, hiding a smile, “Not a single bit.” Andrew faked a betrayed face, and clutched his chest, as if he was having a heart attack. “Okay, maybe I missed you a little bit,” she giggled. He stopped pretending and fiercely hugged her, as if he would never let her go. She hugged him back, her joking front dropping and tears flowing as she was embraced. Then it was early spring again and they walked through the orchards, hand-in-hand. As they walked, Penelope noticed that one of the trees had been chopped down. Which wasn’t unusual because Andrew’s family were cabinet makers. but that was one of the trees they had played around when they were younger, and the tree that Penelope had secretly carved AB + PR into the tree. It was a sad moment as she remembered all the days climbing it or laying in the shade underneath on a hot summer day. Andrew noticed her staring at the stump, and put his arm around her, pulling her close. “I loved that tree,” he whispered in her ear, with a smile, “Especially the crudely carved heart at the top, on the left.” “You weren’t supposed to know about that,” She whispered back, turning red and looking away. “Oops,” he said, “I guess you didn’t see the one at the bottom, right next to the roots.” “What!” she exclaimed, running over to the stump, scanning the roots. Then she saw it. It was expertly carved, with both of their initials inside an ornate heart. She ran her hands over it feeling the smooth cuts. Later in spring they walked to the little chapel, much faster than the first time, after discovering a dirt path that led to the chapel. Andrew was eager to get there, almost pulling her there. “Slow down! We’ll still get there if we don’t sprint,” she said, her cheeks colored and her heart pounding hard. When they finally got there, he seemed to be even more energetic than when they had started the journey, although he had practically run the whole way, with a heavy backpack. They stopped outside and Penelope sat on one of the big boulders near the chapel. Andrew sat next to her. They sat like that for a while, looking

out at the bay, just enjoying each other’s presence. Finally Andrew broke the silence. “I have something for you,” He said, drawing a beautiful wooden box out of his bag and handed it to her. “What is this?” She asked. “It’s a gift and a hope. Open the lid, and you’ll see,” He said with a hopeful expression on his face. As she opened the box her face changed from confusion to exuberance. Inside the box were six compartments. Inside one was a key to the box with red string tied to it. Inside another was a ring, engagement ring to be exact. “Penelope, I have known you my entire life, and loved you just as long. When I was fighting, I fought for you. When I got your letters, they made me feel invincible. Everytime I look at you I love you even more. This box is made from the tree we marked with our love. If I could even try to explain the amount of love I have for you, I would talk forever. So please make me as happy as I could be by becoming my wife.” Penelope closed her eyes and smiled. She wiped tears from her eyes, and opened her green eyes. “Yes.” The Antiques Depot is hosting its fourth annual writing competition, encouraging young people and teens to explore the world of rare and special antique objects, and learn about our culture and history, while encouraging their creative imagination. 2 T chopped fresh parsley 1/3 C fresh lemon juice Extra-virgin olive oil, to taste. I like a little more than most. Start with a Tablespoon and go from there 1 dash hot pepper sauce, or to taste kosher salt to taste 1/4 t black pepper 1 large tomato, sliced Combine all ingredients and carefully toss to combine. Serve with fresh tomato slices. So easy. So refreshing!
RATATOUILLE WHOLE LOAF PICNIC SANDWICH I love big sandwiches for a crowd. They are festive, eye catching and delicious since they are made ahead of time and have plenty of time to marinate. Depending on your boat set up, you will either be able to wait to cut the sandwich or have to do it ahead of time. Either way is fine, although I do find tin foil works best for holding a sandwich together for longer periods of time.

In a colander, toss eggplant with 3/4 teaspoon salt. Let stand 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a food processor, pulse olives, pepperoncini, and parsley until very finely chopped. Transfer to a small bowl and stir in mayonnaise. Heat a grill or grill pan to medium. Clean and lightly oil hot grill. Toss eggplant, tomatoes, and zucchini with oil and season with salt. Grill, turning frequently, until tender and slightly charred, about 4 minutes for tomatoes and about 7 minutes each for eggplant and zucchini. Spread bread with olive mixture. Assemble sandwich with peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and tomatoes. Serve immediately or wrap in tin foil and refrigerate for up to 4 hours.
GREEN CURRY & COCONUT SOBA NOODLES This is a fun, easy, not to mention healthy (dare i say vegan?) dish that comes together literally in minutes, for those last minute “sunset sails” 1 (8 ounce) package soba noodles 2/3 C almond butter 3 T green curry paste 1 C coconut milk, full fat please 1 tablespoon tamari or regular soy sauce 1 T Chili Oil (sesame based) 1/4 cup fresh mint or basil (or both), chiffonade 1/4 cup toasted pepitas Boil soba noodles in a large sauce pot until al dente, 3 minutes. Drain noodles in a colander and rinse in under cold water. Drain. In a small sauce pot over low heat, whisk together the almond butter, chili oil, green curry paste, coconut milk, and tamari just until combined. Transfer noodles to a bowl and toss with sauce, chopped mint and pepitas. Pack it up, and hurry for the sunset!
ORANGE YOGURT CAKE This recipe gets its moisture from whole milk yogurt, which virtually eliminates the need for whipped cream or frosting on top (ahem, saving you one less thing to carry). The orange zest and juice provide a sweet, tart

Featured Restaurant: Fifty-Six Union
Fine Dining & Fun at Fifty-Six Fun at Fifty-Six starts early—around 3 pm every day when Aprés la Plage begins in their garden and on the patio. Beautiful, lush, and secluded, this is an oasis of serenity just a short walk from the center of town. We can think of no better place to relax in the shade with a refreshing libation after a day at the beach or to sit in the sunshine with a tasty snack after a stressful day at the office. You can savor delectable morsels like oysters and clams on the half-shell and shrimp cocktail or enjoy something more substantial like a juicy Fifty-Six Angus Burger or a Lobster Roll with pernod scented mayo on a toasted brioche bun. Or just give in to temptation and pass around a mound of Fifty-Six Union’s addictive Truffled Frites. Bartenders here know their craft, so don’t hesitate to explore Fifty-Six Union’s specialty cocktails. We recommend any of their tequila concoctions: the summery Last Mango in Paris and the refreshing Esprit 56 with mint, cucumber, and lime are two favorites. The impressive wine list curated by co-owner Wendy Jannelle is full of choices that play well with food, and includes many lesser-known and superb bottles, as well as their own private label Pinot Noir called Veronica’s Private Reserve. Dinner service overlaps Aprés la Plage, which continues till 5:30 pm, so you can move right from your comfy lounge chair in the garden to the patio or to a table in one of their stylish dining rooms. Indoors and out, Fifty-Six offers fine dining in a playful ambiance, and we love that we can enjoy culinary excellence without pretension.
Lobster Rangoons
Every note rings true on Chef Peter Jannelle’s expertly crafted dishes. From appetizer to dessert, plates are beautifully and thoughtfully composed. Garnishes and accompaniments are not just decorative, every element adds to the flavor and texture of the dish. Nearly every selection on this menu is tender and crisp, fresh and rich, warm and cool, and all are perfectly seasoned. Many preparations have global accents, and this chef is an excellent saucier—many times we find ourselves swiping a finger along the plate to savor every remaining drop. A delicious example of his talents is Chef Jannelle’s own preparation of New England Clam & Corn Chowder—it’s the best chowder we've had since the last time we ordered it here! This chowder is not from a pre-packaged base, like so many served at other island eateries. It has a perfect consistency (creamy without being too thick) and layers of flavor with herbs and a splash of spirit. The clams
are tender and kernels of fresh corn add sweet pops. If you’re visiting the island and want to try Clam Chowder, this is the place to order it (they also serve their chowder during Après la Plage). Some restaurants have a signature dish—Chef Jannelle has several. Timed for the season and for what's being harvested or brought in from the docks, they reappear on the menu near the same time every year. Patrons know when their favorites are due. One of the dishes that disappears and reappears is Chef The Wedge Jannelle’s Lobster Rangoons, tasty hand-folded packets of lobster meat, scallions, and marscarpone served on a drizzle of asian pepper coulis with a spark of heat. Another is the Chicken Dim Sum. For these, chicken, garlic, and ginger are tucked into pleated wrappers thin enough to see through but thick enough to hold the housemade mix. Be sure to swipe each dumpling through the tracings of sweet soy glaze adorning the plate. At the recommendation of the chef, we rounded out our appetizers during last week’s meal with The Wedge. This is a superbly done classic: crisp iceberg lettuce adorned with bacon, blue cheese dressing, bacon, and lots of crumbled blue cheese. Did we mention the bacon? YUM! One of the entrees at FiftySix that always lures patrons back is Chef Jannelle’s sensational Roasted 1/2 Rack of Australian Lamb. Marvelously tender, the lamb is Chicken Mole

coated with mustard for a flicker of heat and panko for a delightful crunch. ribs are The served on a luxurious bearnaise sauce that is as good with the minted tabbouleh as it is with the lamb. You will find yourself gnawing on the bones to get every delicious morsel of meat. There’s always something new to try at Fifty-Six, and for us last week it Roasted 1/2 Rack of Australian Lamb was Chicken Mole. Leg, thigh, and statler breast are infused with the deep, complex flavors of Chef Jannelle’s Oaxacan-style mole. One in our party wished for it to be spicier (he's also a big fan of the Javanese Spicy Fried Rice served here that is an 8 on a spiciness scale of 1 to 10)—the rest of us were quite happy with the level of heat set by the chef. The lamb and the chicken are splendid, but the seafood entrees are the stars of this summer menu. We know some islanders who refuse any scallops but Nantucket bays and will only eat those between November and April. They don’t know what they’re missing! Chef Jannelle has just the right light touch with the

fresh sea scallops available now. His Pan-Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops are golden top and bottom, translucent and succulent in the middle. They’re bathed in a port wine and chipotle beurre blanc (we love the smoky-sweet flavor of this buttery sauce), and served with Israeli cous cous tossed with diced carrot, red

onion, and bell pepper. We’ll let our shortsighted friends wait till fall when Chef Jannelle puts his famous Bay Scallop Taco back on the menu at Fifty-Six. The dish you’ll be talking about on the way home is the Day Boat Fluke. The fish is fresh and firm and flaky and the coating of finely crushed pecans gives it Chipwich an irresistible nutty flavor and delicate crust. It’s served on top of a bed of black rice with tips of sauteed asparagus, bell pepper, red onion, and kernels of sweet, fresh corn. Surrounding the fish and the vegetables is a luscious pool of lemon thyme beurre blanc that is both bright and rich. Everything about this dish is impressive. Heads turned when our server, Alexis, brought dessert to our table. We thought it was the Chipwich, a grown-up version of this summer treat with salted caramel gelato and mini Reeses between two homemade chocolate chip cookies. But then we heard the little girl at the next table politely but emphatically demand to have the Berry Waffle for dinner. This new dessert replaces the Berry Shortcake that has been a favorite at Fifty-Six. We adore this new version with chilled blueberries and strawberBerry Waffle ries over a freshly made, warm buttermilk waffle with a dollop of whipped cream. The crowning touch is warm maple syrup poured over the top. It’s a season of new eateries on Nantucket: more than half a dozen at last count and at least one still waiting to open, but given the choice, we’ll have our food and our fun at Fifty-Six.

by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island
Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.

Her passion for jewelry hit its peak, while whe was working as the Bridal Consultant for Tiffany & Co. In the summer of 2002, Kristin Pearce Designs was formed. Beaded jewelry were the first pieces of her collection, designed using freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, and semi-precious beads, all designs were classic, simple and understated. An updated version of the “Tin Cup” floating necklace came next, using crystals in a variety of color combinations, hand knotted on silk cord. Then children’s jewelry, knotted pearls, gold pieces, and paper came into the mix. Kristin Pearce Designs now sells on Etsy, on her website, and in stores up and down the East Coast.
