An Islander Remembers WWII by Sarah Teach Eighty-nine-year-old WWII veteran Karl Lindquist is lucky to be alive. It was 1944, and Lindquist had just turned 18 when the Nantucket Draft Board gave orders for him and two other young Nantucket men to report for U.S. Army Infantry duty in Boston. The town didn’t announce their departure; there was no send-off party. “It was just like any other day on Nantucket,” recalls Lindquist. The three young men quietly left their peaceful island hometown, not knowing if they would ever return. As serene a place as Nantucket is, Lindquist doesn’t think the guys from inner city Boston were any less shocked by war than he. “It’s a whole new experience that you only get through being at war. Nothing can prepare a person for it,” says Lindquist. “To be talking to someone one morning and then later that day hear, ‘So-and-so got it today.’ That’s the most difficult part.” Lindquist landed in France with a company of 180, and their daily lives were quickly turned upside down. “Days were spent in the field. Then we’d sleep in foxholes which we had dug, or were left by the Germans if they were retreating,” says Lindquist. “In the morning, someone came around and woke us up. Breakfast of hot coffee was brought to us. Then we were assembled, and told what we were going to do that day. We carried our own rations. It’s funny because you don’t really think a lot about eating there. Your rations seem small, but after a week, you can hardly finish your meal. Your stomach must shrink.” The sustenance, usually just coffee and bread, was nothing to write home about. But not many soldiers wrote home anyway. “There wasn’t much opportunity to write,” Lindquist says. “The guys who had young brides did more writing than anyone. I’d get a letter from my parents every once in a while, but I didn’t do much writing. I was too tired most of the time.” It’s no wonder Lindquist was so tired by nightfall; he spent his days as a scout. He would venture into the field alone, staying as low as possible, until he reached the nearest town to see what resources they had. Lindquist

relayed an especially spine-chilling tale to M.A. Humphreys of the GI Generation Project. Lindquist had just scouted out a town full of tanks, and was heading back to camp. “A tank came out of the town,” he recounts, “And cut across in front of me. I knew he hadn’t seen me because I saw the side of him. And he couldn’t see out the sides. So I hit the ground. And he sort of turned and he was right there next to me. When I looked up, I was lying flat. There were some others of them [also on the tank]. His gun was right over my head. And I’m like, ‘What am I going to do now?’ My inner voice said, ‘Nothing. You just lie there. Pretend you’re dead. You’re dead if you move, so just stay there like that.’” The tank passed, bringing a wave of relief through the young man’s unharmed body. Evening didn’t bring much relief from the stresses of the day. “At night, you’re usually with your foxhole mate, unless he’s been killed,” says Lindquist. “Sometimes when you’re lying there, you think of funny little things to say to each other. By the end of the day, some fellows liked to sit around and talk. Mine and I liked to just go back to our foxhole. Usually we were just so tired that we went to sleep right then and there. The foxholes were 2.5 feet wide, 6 feet long, and 1.5 feet deep. It’s like a box that you’d lower a casket into. You set out your blanket roll, and one of you faces one way, the other faces the other. Sometimes, halfway through the night, one of you rolls over. You don’t talk about it; you just roll over so you’re not facing the other person. When it rained, we got wet. There was no relief from that. Then in the morning, you rolled up your bed roll and took it with you, unless you were dug into a place where you didn’t move from for days or weeks, like the Battle of the Bulge. Then you could use trees to cover yourself up so if there were any explosions overheard, the shrapnel wouldn’t come down and get you.” As you might imagine, there’s not much fun to be had at war. Lindquist says, “I recall no attempts at recreation hardly ever. We didn’t have the continued on page 18

A Weekend of Firsts by Leah Mojer Memorial Day Weekend is the most glorious and anticipated of all weekends here on Nantucket as it is in many places in New England. It is the official kickoff to Summer, the best season, and boy do we celebrate. Between the Figawi Boat Race & its infamous parties, the influx of weekenders and tourists, and friends and family clamoring for the spare bedroom, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. The island is in full swing by now with South Water Street’s cherry blossoms in full bloom, swirling pink petals through the downtown streets. Our favorite restaurants & bars are busy doing what they do best. The beaches are pristine from their winter respite and the lobster with drawn butter is flowing. At our own gatherings, we don’t mess around with the food or drinks either. It’s a weekend of first cook outs; grilled meats, salad platters overflowing with fresh veggies, fresh fruit cocktails, and sangrias. We give it all we’ve got for these few fleeting days every year, singing with delight for the coming few months of beach time, sunsets in bare feet, and warm evenings in the garden. For me, the delight of summer cooking is letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Fresh produce, brand new and just weeks old, shine with just a nudge of encouragement from any willing cook. A splash of oil here, a pinch of salt there, and a relaxed and happy outlook are all anyone needs for a successful weekend of grilling, feasting and enjoying this wonderful start-of-summer tradition.

Intimate Conversations on Canvas

The sweeping vistas of Nantucket Island offer a serenity that few locations can surpass. The rolling gold and green of Tuppancy Links, the sprawling natural beauty of Folger’s Marsh, the long stretches of pristine beach kissed by the Atlantic Ocean along Surfside and Cisco... these iconic views of Nantucket are captured in a new series of panoramic paintings by island artist G. S. Hill. This Sunday, May 25, Greg and Judi Hill will host a summer celebration to unveil these magical canvases at their gallery on Straight Wharf. Meet the artist and see his paintings that transport the viewer to these island scenes. Hill has been painting on Nantucket since 1978. His continued passion to capture the island’s beauty is illustrated on canvas: soft lights seen through the rolling fog, windswept dunes with gulls crying overhead, rose covered cottages lining cobblestone streets, and rainbow colored catboats sailing in Nantucket Harbor. Whether landscape or harbor scene, just a glance is not enough. If painting is a dialog between the artist and the person viewing the art, these panoramas are intimate conversations. Stop by the G.S. Hill Gallery, 40 Straight Wharf, on Sunday, May 25 between 10 am and 5 pm and experience “Nantucket Panoramas.”

FEATHERED FRIENDS: PART I

American Oystercatchers

FRENCH SOLE SPRING 2014

by Dr. Sarah Oktay, Director, University of Massachusetts Nantucket Field Station Living at the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station gives me the opportunity to observe the wonderful diversity of bird life that defines Nantucket. Spring signals the return of piping plovers, oystercatchers and osprey along with the wading birds and song birds that brighten our days and turn our mornings into symphonies of birdsong. I admit, I am not always thrilled to be woken at 430 by an obnoxiously early red winged blackbird, but that is much better than the alarm soundtrack of a beeping trash truck. This week we’ll discuss one of the most iconic birds found on Nantucket. I would encourage people to read the books and columns written by Nantucket’s many exemplary bird experts like Ken Blackshaw, Edith and Ginger Andrews, and Vern Laux. Edie Ray, Karen Beattie, Dick Viet, Bob Kennedy, and an array of shorebird folks associated with local conservation and science organizations and state and federal programs including the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, Massachusetts Division of Fish and Wildlife, Mass Natural Heritage, and Mass Audubon have acquired years of excellent research on birds of Nantucket. The American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliates) is monitored by a couple of agencies dedicated to protecting their nesting sites and chicks in order to help restore populations of this threatened species. American Oystercatchers are a species of special concern in several coastal states and are listed as a "yellow" species (indicating a national conservation concern) by Audubon. Several thousand American Oystercatchers live in the United States with most of them breeding in the Mid-Atlantic States. The American oystercatcher has expanded its range northward into Massachusetts over the past 45 years. Now, breeding

In April, we fled south in search of spring. Up here in God’s Country, Massachusetts, the leaves and flowers only come out when the promise of one more blizzard has passed away. Some years, on Nantucket, the flowers feel confident sometime in late February. During most springs, the green only comes after the constellations have changed and the storms go spinning out to sea three hundred miles to the east. April is the cruelest month. Forty degrees and windy has stretched out into its sixth month and 180th day. The trees in front of the house remain skeletal shadows, the swamp silent, and the grass gray and lifeless; yet the hope for snow is gone. Every storm brings wind, rain, and a damp that the polar fleece cannot wick away. So, this April, I plucked the youngest son off the island and drove him to a place where the trees were in bloom and the grass had been green for weeks. Now, the youngest son has reached an age when trips can’t just be for pleasure. Our days of whiling away the hours in water parks and play grounds had eased to an end. Instead, his trips needed to be educational. Educational for a child from Nantucket has two meanings; he should learn about history and he should learn about life in America. We had explore life in America, rich in highways, diners, and elevators. We needed to find whoopee pies, scrapple, and birch beer. Beyond the snacks and annoyances of mainland living, I felt he should know a bit about history. In my most paternal, I felt a foundation needed to be built for his future, so our trip south aimed at three of America’s bloodiest battlefields: Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harpers Ferry. Now, I undertook his education in war as seriously as I could. On the night before we began driving, we watched the Ken Burn’s episodes on those three battles and I took away his phone so that he wouldn’t be distracted. Then, on our way south, we listened to The Killer Angels in the car. By the time we pulled into the Gettysburg hotel, he had been steeped into heroism of Chamberlain, the foolishness of Stuart, and the audacity of Lee. I did my best to build up our ghosts in the grasses. We started out early in the warm Pennsylvania mist. We toured the Gettysburg battlefield with an official and experienced guide. The young man watched the grazing land and the corn stubs while we pestered the guide with questions about canister versus grape shot and other details about the artillery of the moment. We stood at the crest of Cemetery Hill with Meade and imagined withering cannonades through the empty fields. Thousands died before us amid all of the buses and monuments clustered. “That red barn,” our guide intoned, “would be the range of one set of cannons.” We sighted along its lines and imagined cannonball after ball landing amid the rebels. The young man took a picture. We paused for ice cream, then returned to the battle. The three of us endured the cyclorama and the film, then dawdled through the museum of letters, weapons, and maps. We stood, for a moment, in attention at General Lee’s coat and the hair from his horse, Traveller. Somewhere in the deepest science

Bottles for Your Barbecue by Carri Wroblewski BRIX Wine Shop I’ll admit it. I have a slight obsession with grills. I own four…because you never know which one you might need. The big wood burning grill for Sunday afternoons when your party of two turns into a party of ten. The gas grill for when it’s 25 degrees out and you still want a grilled steak. The little Weber for tailgates. Or the La Caja China for your pig roast. If there is one weekend that offers up the grill’s rite of passage, it’s Memorial Day Weekend. The beginning of the season on Nantucket—the beginning of the summer. At my barbecues, we always start with a cocktail. Though I love a good G & T, you’ll usually find me mixing up something with a few more ingredients. My friends will quickly tell you what the staples are, but there is one cocktail in particular that always makes its way to the table. The White Lady. Invented by Harry MacElhone, a bartender at Ciro's Club in London, there are various versions of this drink, but this is my favorite recipe. In a cocktail shaker combine 1½ oz. of Caorunn Gin (a small batch gin from Scotland), 1 oz. of orange liqueur (I use Bauchant), ¾ oz. of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and an egg white. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Now you’re ready to get the party started. Whether you’re sipping seaside on a boat during Figawi or firing up your barbecue for the first time this season, simple, delicious, affordable wines fit the bill. Here are six easy-drinking grill-worthy greats for your next backyard barbecue: The 2012 MontGravet Côtes de Gascogne from France is brought to us by the folks who craft the Tortoise Creek wines. They don’t disappoint with this zippy white from the Gascony region, near the city of Toulouse in southwest France. The wine takes its name from the “Mont” or hills where the vines are grown and the “Gravet,” which are oval rocks commonly found in the area. Made from 100% Colombard grapes, this is a perfect spring white with exotic fruit aromas, fresh citrus flavors, and balanced acidity. Oysters, anyone? If you’re looking for something a little richer to pair with your grilled fare the 2013 Yalumba “Y” Series Viognier from Australia will seal the deal. Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery from the Barossa Valley. This 100% Viognier offers up classic aromas of white flowers and stone fruit. It has bright flavors of pineapple, figs, and honeysuckle with a hint of citrus on the finish. Sip this one with grilled fish! It’s no secret that we drink a lot of pink wine on Nantucket and this just might be your perfect porch pour. The 2013 ZÜM Rosé hails from vineyards in the rolling hills of Germany’s Nahe region (located along the River Nahe). A delicious rosé made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, it’s a light pink color in the glass and is loaded with fresh mineral notes and bright flavors of cranberries and ripe strawberries. Take this one to the beach or pair it with grilled vegetables or pork chops rubbed with rosemary.

AUNT LEAH’S FUDGE

In 2001, Nantucket’s Sidney and Robert Henderson VFW Post 8608 was forced out of its former Tom Nevers location due to erosion. But the wind and seas couldn’t destroy island veterans’ spirits. A new facility at 22 New South Road was 12 years in the making, but was certainly worth the wait. Lining the walls of the VFW’s barroom are tributes to veterans who gave their lives in the service of our country. You’ll see pictures of the Hendersons, the two Nantucket brothers behind the post’s name. Both were killed in action while serving in WWII in the Tank Corp. Let us remember their sacrifices this Memorial Day. Channing LeFebvre, who serves as Service Commander of Post 8608, is always happy to give a full tour of the facility. At 5,000 square feet with two major function rooms, a wraparound bar and dining area, a gigantic industrial kitchen, and over 100 parking spaces, the VFW is a perfect function location. In addition to being available for special events, the VFW is open to the community for lunch on weekdays from noon ‘til 2 p.m. (Think BBQ spareribs, steak sandwiches, hearty stews.) The main course costs just $6; dessert and drinks–free refills included–are $1 add-ons. As for the conversation you’ll have with your bar mates? Priceless. The most important aspect of the VFW is what it offers to its 60 members: a chance to connect with others who understand their experiences. Nantucket’s veterans have fought in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Central American Wars, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. Located within the VFW building is the office of Veterans Services, which is run by Ralph Hardy, who served at home and abroad from 1956-62. Veterans Services exists to offer island veterans “help of any kind,” as Hardy puts it. Most people who visit Hardy are seeking help arranging medical care. Hardy says, “A lot of fellows won’t talk about problems to anyone but someone who’s been there and also served.” Hardy’s office hours are every Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. At all other times, leave a message for him at 508-325-5332. If you are a veteran who does not live on Nantucket, Hardy will gladly help you find your own Veterans Services officer. “This island is very welcoming to veterans,” says LeFebvre. After having been at war until 2010, he sees Nantucket as a peaceful haven. LeFebvre doesn’t like to talk about himself, but we pried some details out of him and believe he should be recognized for his service. During his 30 years in the Army, LeFebvre served in three foreign wars and led soldiers as a colonel. If you get the chance to meet LeFebvre (look for him next time you fly; he’s a TSA officer at Nantucket Memorial Airport), be sure to thank him for the decades that he devoted to serving our country. Meet LeFebvre, Hardy and their comrades at Nantucket’s 2014 Memorial Day parade on Sunday, May 25. It will begin at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Washington Street; continue to the Civil War Monument on upper Main St., and on to Prospect Hill Cemetery, and finally, back to the Legion for a reception.

Eye on Style

Fine in texture and soft to the touch, cashmere is a fiber that is luxurious, timelessly elegant, and wonderfully cozy. Johnstons Cashmere, located on Federal Street, is a store that specializes in clothing and accessories made exclusively from this sought after knit. Pam and Finn Murphy got their start at Wolfhound on Main Street, where they were selling a lot of cashmere. They soon became the US agent for Johnstons of Elgin, a cashmere and fine woollens company based in Scotland, and decided to specialize in cashmere and promote the brand by opening a store with the Johnstons name. They opened their doors in 1997, the year Johnstons of Elgin celebrated their 200th anniversary, and a second store in Greenwich soon followed. Pam and Finn sold Wolfhound, choosing to focus on cashmere. Johnstons Cashmere carries beautiful, quality clothing. Their relationship with their suppliers means that they have a direct influence on the design and manufacture of many of the items in their store. Through years of experience and keeping up with current trends, they have a good idea what their customers want. A trip to Johnstons is an experience that will exceed your expectations. Customer service comes first, and their staff is very knowledgable about the products they sell, making sure you find what you are looking for. While Johnstons specializes in cashmere, they also carry a selection of dresses, casual wear, belts, boots, and accessories from Europe’s foremost designers. Cashmere styles are available for both men and women. Head on over to 4 Federal Street for this season’s softest knits and more! Johnstons Cashmere is open daily in season.

labs of the south, someone is hoping to bring the legendary horse back to life from those fragments of DNA. We wound up back at Little Round Top and Devil’s Den. You can’t stand at the bottom of Little Round Top without thinking about what a perfect spot that was for a set of cannons. The ridge follows gently up to the town. The bravery of Chamberlain, the difficulty of all the rocks, the shear ugliness of the hillside loomed. And yet, the young man took to the rocks for some leaping and hiding. He followed the dirt paths of others before him, amid the rocks where the sharpshooters hid and amid the piled up corpses of the dead. He jumped from rock to rock, ran through the passage ways, and ignored the ghosts that clustered around him. I was keenly aware of the First Texas Regiment battling the 124th New York until the 40th New York forced the Confederates out. The Young Man was not. He saw rocks and hiding places, boulders to climb and passages to duck into. I let the ghosts fade into the dirt and saw what he saw; a jungle gym of rocks, a steep hill covered in boulders, and long fields of grass. The grass always wins. Every battlefield returns to the farm. Cows wander where soldiers walked abreast and fell to that lethal canister. Some of the dead were dragged to graves, some were left were they fell, and then the rain came, and the winter, and then the grass grew. All 1328 monuments at Gettysburg float momentarily over the grass. They will settle into the dirt, as did everyone who died there. And in the end there will still be the grass. The job of a monument is to keep the name fresh. Buford. Lee. Longstreet. Chamberlain. Names are all carved deep into the marble. But each name fades with the years and the rains, and each marker sinks a little bit more into the grass. Each generation forgets another set of heroes. This is as it should be. The triumph of the soldier is to be forgotten. The causes and the conspiracies should settle into the history books and the patter, and society should advance. Boys should leap over the stones where men died. Nonetheless, the truth of our nation is that it was built and rebuilt on stone markers. In the late afternoon, the young man and I stood where Lincoln made his address. We were ringed by anonymous markers from state after state; but the markers hid deep in the grass. We stood upon the honored and bloodied dead, in a world built upon them. The foundation of a country of highways, hotels, and heart was built on these granite markers. The young man’s eyes and my old ones unite at that. I can see the grass amid the ghosts, and he can see the granite in the grass.

Island Legacies Some of the most notable links between Nantucket’s past and present are buildings on the island that have withstood the test of time. This Friday, May 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will host an opening reception to introduce a new exhibit entitled Architectural Legacies: The NHA’s Historic Sites at the Whitney Gallery at 7 Fair Street. The Historic American Building Surveys (HABS), conducted by the National Park Service and other United States private and public agencies, have documented America's built environment since 1933. Totaling more than 556,900 measured drawings, these surveys include most of the NHA’s historic sites and many other island landmarks. This exhibition highlights the HABS drawings of island historic sites, including Oldest House, Old Mill, Old Gaol, Hadwen House, and more. Each drawing provides a glimpse into a different architectural period and chronicles Nantucket’s dynamic architectural past. “The NHA has a solid foundation in attracting visitors to its historic sites through tours, programs, and other transformative encounters,” says Sarah Helm, NHA Curatorial and Library Associate. “This exhibit takes that foundation a step further by offering guests the opportunity to appreciate our properties at an artistic and technical level. By focusing on the HABS drawings, which are works of art in and of themselves, we are able to present details that are often overlooked in viewing some of Nantucket’s greatest architectural treasures.” Architectural Legacies: The NHA’s Historic Sites will be on view at the NHA’s Whitney Gallery at 7 Fair Street through November 2014. The gallery will be open during NHA Research Library hours on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 10 am to 4 pm, and Tuesdays, 11 am to 4 pm. The gallery is closed Wednesdays, weekends and all holidays.

Bottles for Your BBQ from page 9

Perfect for parties, grilled pizzas are one of my favorite summertime meals. The 2012 Castello Vicchiomaggio Ripa delle Mandorle Toscana IGT would be a natural pair. According to Italy’s history books, the Vicchiomaggio Castle, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, dates back to 1400. Years later, it became an exclusive Manor House of the Renaissance period and took its original name from the word Maggio (May). A blend of 75% Sangiovese and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, they have been producing wine on the estate for years. You’ll get savory red fruit flavors intertwined with hints of fresh herbs and notes of spice. For those of you who want something a little heartier, this one’s for you. A medium to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon from the Languedoc region in France, this domaine sits on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa. The 2011 Villa des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon Vin de Pays d'Oc from France is made by winemaker Jeff Carrel and has bright fruit aromas that spill from the glass. This wine is fresh, yet has structure and concentration and on the palate shows off flavors of black cherry, plum, and spice. And for the real barbecue aficionado try the 2012 Senorio Barahonda ‘Carro’ Tinto from the up-and-coming Spanish appellation of Yecla. A blend of 50% Monastrell (Mourvedre), 30% Syrah, 12% Merlot, and 8% Tempranillo, it’s packed with ripe raspberry flavors alongside notes of spice and a hint of leather. Its bright, juicy and jammy fruit flavors make it a natural with dishes you would serve at a picnic or backyard barbecue—think pulled pork sandwiches, grilled burgers, or ribs. What I love best about the flavors of the grill is that they allow us to introduce a variety of flavors in our glass. From the beginning cocktail to the easy drinking white that matches with local seafood or the char of a steak that we pair with rich reds. So whatever grill you fire up over Memorial Day Weekend, grab a glass, pull a cork, and savor the flavors of the grill. Boozy Beans (0% Alcohol) Nantucket Coffee Roasters greets the season with new rum and whiskey barrel coffees. This past winter, owner Wes van Cott was hanging out at Cisco Brewery when he noticed an old rum barrel sitting around. When he found out that the barrels are often discarded after their life as a rum vessel, he dreamed up a different fate for them. Van Cott poured a batch of green Ethiopian yirgacheffe beans into a rum barrel and closed it up for a month. When he opened it up, a strong, spicy aroma wafted out. Next came roasting, which rendered the beans more fragrant than ever! Finally it was time to taste, and what a glorious taste had been bred. It had all the essence of rum without any of the alcohol. Van Cott and his team loved it so much that they repeated the process with a whiskey barrel and experienced the same phenomenal result. Boozy Beans are available online or at The Bean on Centre Street for $22.95 per 12 oz bag. But don’t expect them to last forever. Each batch is only 130-150 pounds; and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Moved O’er Amidships In the dark days of January 2014, Egan Maritime Institute moved out of their long-time home in the Coffin School on Winter Street. This will be their first summer in their new home in Bayberry Court, formerly the location of Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank. You’ll see them next time you head to Cowboy’s Meat Market. Egan’s comrades over at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum have launched their 2014 exhibition, “Throw Out The Lifeline,” a look at Nantucket’s past lifesaving practices.

energy to kick a ball around. Not that we had a ball. The guys just sat around and talked to each other.” “It’s been 70 years. I feel a little awkward talking about it now. The guys who just got back two years ago probably have a lot more to say than I do. I don’t enjoy looking back on it. I don’t review the memories in my head as much as possible.” But on Memorial Day, Lindquist thinks of his fallen brothers. “To me, Memorial Day just means memories, of course. Memories of people, of what happened. I think about the whole chance of it, mathematically, of coming through and not being wounded or killed.” Lindquist thinks back on a time he tried to talk a fellow soldier out of moving during an attack. The young man didn’t listen and was killed. Lindquist’s anguish over the boy’s death seems as fresh today as it was in 1944. “Everybody has to make their own decisions over there. And once you’ve been there, you know enough what not to do. I learned that when the shells start coming in, you don’t try to look for a safer place because no place is safe. You just keep a low profile, and maybe you’ll live through it, maybe you won’t. Guys will try to [cross the line of fire] and find safer place, and they get killed crossing. At one point, I realized, ‘The longer I’m here, the longer I’ll last.’” And last he did. At 19, Lindquist became the youngest, most decorated G.I. in the 2nd Battalion-104th Infantry Regiment, with a Bronze and Silver star. Of the original 180 who landed in France with Lindquist, only five survived. Lindquist’s message to Americans is this: “Be happy that you didn’t have to go through whole process of being there at war and having to save the world from being dominated by the Nazis. And remember how many people, how many lives, how many bad experiences it took to rescue our world from the Nazis.” Karl Lindquist recounts his experiences in Youth Interrupted: A Nantucket Boy at War in Europe. The book is available at Mitchell’s Book Corner at 54 Main Street and Nantucket Bookworks at 25 Broad Street. NANTUCKET ISLAND’S

American Oystercatchers from page 7

populations are even more successful than some of their southern cousins. The ones who breed on the along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico have a harder time building up their numbers due to loss of habitat. On the West coast of the US is found the Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani). American oystercatchers are ground nesters. They establish little scrapes or divots in the sand to lay their eggs. This type of nesting pattern puts them at odds with beachgoers. Fortunately over the past few years, due to diligent educational efforts and care taken by island beach users, these birds are thriving on our shores. The American Oystercatcher is a spectacular bird with black and white plumage and a vivid long dark orange (almost red) beak that it can use as a pry bar to open oysters and other bivalves. The genus name “Haematopus” is probably from the Greek words “haima” for blood and “pous” for foot, but is possibly referring to the eye. Palliates come from the Latin word “palliatus” for wearing a “pallium” or kind of cloak, which was used to describe the dark cloaklike coloration of the back and sides of the bird. The American Oystercatcher looks very different from other shorebirds as it stalks about on long, flesh-colored legs, with a white belly, black head, and dark brown (almost black) back. Honestly, they almost look like clowns reincarnated as birds with red rings around brightly colored yellowish eyes. The oystercatcher is among the largest of North American shorebirds, measuring up to 18 inches in length, and weighing 21 ounces, with a 32-inch wingspan. The male and female American oystercatchers are alike, although the female is usually larger, with a longer bill. The juvenile’s head and back are speckled brown

to camouflage it against the pebbly beaches. Courting birds tend to walk together and make a single piping note. This progresses to leaning over, extending and lowering the neck, and running side by side while calling. Eventually the pair may burst into flight and fly in tight formation around their territory, sometimes joined by birds from adjoining territories. Outside of the breeding season, the American Oystercatcher is highly gregarious, gathering into large flocks when foraging, roosting and migrating. However, during the breeding season, which takes place between February and July, monogamous pairs collect at specific breeding sites, with the female arriving up to three weeks before the male. Once paired up, they will construct their simple nest in an elevated position just above the high water mark. During this time, the breeding pair is highly territorial and will fiercely defend an area around the nest, which may vary from just a few meters away, to a kilometer stretch of the beach. To mark their territory, birds engage in ‘piping displays’ whereby the adult bird stands with its neck arched and bill pointed downwards, all the while emitting a series of piping notes.“ (www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/american_oystercatcher/lifehistory). This behavior makes it relatively easy to trap oystercatchers in order to band them or attach a radio tag. Researchers place a fake decoy oystercatcher in a constrained area near an oystercatcher nest with multiple loop-like lassos distributed around the decoy in a “noose carpet” which is buried an inch or so below the sand. Then they play the traditional, “I am here to steal your woman or mess up your nest” sound and the adults will fly in to defend the territory, and if all goes well, be caught in the trap. Oystercatchers make their nests by scratching out an indentation in the sand in high areas around marshes in dunes or along the shoreline. They’ll make 4-5 nests and then pick their favorite, and then they line the edge of the nest with rocks, or shells or bits of wrack and seaweed in order to camouflage the nests. The eggs are buff colored grayish things with dark spots and they normally incubate their eggs for 24-28 days. When the youngsters hatch, they are able to run around usually within a day or two. They can fly on their own within five weeks.

American Oystercatchers from page 23

Fledglings are very vulnerable and often predated upon by other birds like seagulls and small mammals. Oystercatchers, as the name implies, feed almost exclusively on shellfish like oysters and other marine invertebrates including mussels and clams of many varieties, limpets, sea urchins, starfish, crabs, and worms. They will walk along the intertidal area, looking for mussels and clams that are not paying attention and are partially open filtering their next meal. Then they’ll quickly stab into the open shell with their strong bills, hoping to severe the adductor muscle (the muscle the holds the shell together) and pop open and eat the shellfish. Young oystercatchers rely heavily on the parents to learn feeding techniques, but for their first year of life they feed largely on scraps left by adults because the juvenile’s bill and skull are not sufficiently strong enough to open shells until their second year. There is a term for this that all parents can appreciate called “kleptoparasitism” (parasitism by theft) which is a form of feeding in which one animal takes prey or other food from another that has caught or collected it. Supposedly if it is your own chick, that’s fine, but if it is another chick or a thieving gull, that can annoy an oystercatcher. Does that sound familiar, especially if your teenagers have refrigerator raiding friends? We used to have several oystercatcher nests on an inner section of sandy beach on the backside of the barrier beach protecting Folgers’ Marsh, but rising sea levels and changes in marsh hydrology frequently inundated the nests, so they choose drier spots over on Coatue. Once or twice a day, 4-5 oystercatchers will fly over to feed at the marsh, their loud piping calls are very distinctive and they are relatively predictable coming over in the early morning and then again around 4 to 5 pm. Many researchers use radio telemetry to record oystercatcher behavior. They attach radio tags and bands to oystercatchers and then set up passive recorders in various locations which can pick up the birds’ radio signal as they fly past. The Nantucket Field Station and The Nantucket Conservation Foundation have been housing and assisting doctoral candidate Pam Loring continued on page 25

with UMass Amherst’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Offshore Wind Energy Program who has been conducting telemetry studies on island. The Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative has also funded American oystercatcher (frequently abbreviated as AMOY) research done by Sean Murphy for his doctoral thesis with City University of New York under the tutelage of Professor Dick Veit. The banding of AMOYs makes it easy to identify them using binoculars; you can see a yellow band on the leg of the oystercatcher in the photo included in this article (taken by Len Germinara). Pam will be back this week with her crew to do more tagging and telemetry work. You may have noticed at the end of Coatue at Eel Point and in other locations on the Cape large towers installed by Pam’s team to record radio tagged oystercatchers flying past the towers. You can read more about their work at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation blog at ncfscience.wordpress.com/2013 /06/27/what-are-those-towers-on-coatue-and-eel-point-all-about/ I would also recommend you follow the research of the American Oystercatcher Working Group whose mission is to “develop, support, and implement rangewide research and management efforts that promote the conservation of American Oystercatchers and their habitats through individual and partnershipbased initiatives guided by recommendations of the Working Group’s membership” (info at http://amoywg.org/). NCF and other area shorebird researchers collaborate with the AMOY Working Group. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation has been actively monitoring the nesting sites of piping plovers, common and least terns, and American oystercatchers since 1990. From the NCF web site (www.nantucketconservation.org/ stewardship-overview/shore-bird-monitoring/): ”Science and Stewardship Department staff conducts regular surveys of these sites to document habitat use by staging, migrating, and breeding birds.” All this monitoring and research makes a big difference in determining how well AMOY do on island, in 2013, the NCF team found that “The area around our island hosts the largest breeding population of oystercatchers in Massachusetts – this year, a total of 51 pairs nested on Nantucket, Tuckernuck and Muskeget.”

A Weekend of Firsts from page 5

Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 pound Farfalle Pasta 1 C Mascarpone Cheese 1/4 C Parmesan, grated 1 T Lemon zest Begin heating pot of water for the pasta. Meanwhile, steam the peas over an inch of boiling water for 4 minutes, until just tender. Transfer to a bowl. Add the pea shoots to the steamer and steam 2 minutes, until just wilted. Remove from the heat and allow to cool until you can handle them. Squeeze out excess water from the pea greens and coarsely chop. Swirl olive oil into pan about 2 T, worth. Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet and add the mushrooms and saute until golden brown and fragrant, 5-8 minutes. Add chopped spring onion or scallions. Cook, stirring, until wilted, about 3 minutes. Add the peas and pea shoots and stir together for about a minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper When the water in the pot comes to a boil, salt generously and add the pasta. Cook al dente, using the timing instructions on the package as a guide but checking the pasta a minute before the time indicated is up. When the pasta is ready, using a ladle transfer 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water to the pan with the peas and pea shoots. Add mascarpone to mixture and stir in evenly. Drain pasta and toss at once with the vegetables, lemon zest and Parmesan. Transfer to a platter and drizzle with evoo. Serve warm.

BABY LETTUCES WITH RADISH AND HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING There is nothing I dispise more than bottled ranch dressing. I know I’m the minority here but once you taste this version you may not go back! Romaine Hearts, Bibb & Boston Lettuces, outer leaves removed. 1 bunch Radishes cleaned sliced on a mandolin, or a truffle shaver!* 1 Shallot, shaved Home Made Ranch Dressing 2 C Sour Cream 2 T Onion Powder 1 tsp Garlic Powder Lots of freshly ground Black Pepper (1 T) Lots of minced Chives (1/2 C) a little bit of chopped Dill 1 Garlic Clove (or two if you like a garlicky kick!) grated on a microplane 1 C Buttermilk 1 T Red Wine Vinegar Whisk together in a bowl all ingredients EXCEPT buttermilk & red wine vinegar. Gradually whisk in buttermilk until dressing is slightly thicker than heavy cream. Add red wine vinegar & at this point season to taste with salt and fresh pepper. Dressing will keep in the fridge for up to a week but the sooner it’s used up, the better. Try marinating chicken breast with it or use as a dip for some Cape Cod Chips! Yum! To build the salad, arrange baby lettuces on a large oval platter and scatter

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Vol. 44 No. 3 • Our 44th Season!

May 22 - 28, 2014

Featured Restaurant: Brant Point Grill

There’s a New Buzz About BPG There’s a lot of buzz on Nantucket this spring about new restaurants that are about to open on the island—five at last count. But it doesn’t always take a renovation and a new name to transform a restaurant into something new and exciting. What really makes a difference is change in the kitchen—when the chef changes, you often get a whole new restaurant. This is what has happened this season at The Brant Point Grill. Chef Thomas William Pearson accepted the position as executive chef in this island landmark after becoming familiar with Nantucket as executive sous chef at TOPPERS in Wauwinet for several seasons. His experience in top kitchens around the world includes stints at Michelin-starred establishments; it was natural for a chef of his talent and experience to move on to lead one of the island’s most sophisticated kitchens.

Coriander Crusted Ahi Tuna Carpaccio

With Chef Pearson at the helm breathing new life into even the familiar favorites at Brant Point Grill, there is a sense of renewed excitement that is palpable. He has taken a cuisine that was already very good up several notches to sensational! The waitstaff is clearly enthusiastic about the culinary changes and so are the patrons. Just a few weeks after reopening, this established Nantucket restaurant has developed its own new buzz. Pearson’s attention to detail is impressive: how he chooses locally-sourced

Fresh BPG Ricotta

ingredients all the way to how he plates a dish. It takes considerable skill to let fresh delicate flavors shine through, accenting them with just the right herbs, seasoning, and accompaniments, and we experienced this in dish after dish throughout our recent dinner at Brant Point Grill. He modifies his menus as the seasons change, and every week Chef Pearson designs a new Tasting Menu, which features the best of the season in three or four courses for under $50 (wine pairings extra). Our meal began with an assortment of fresh breads from the BPG kitchen: jalapeno corn muffins, foccacia, and a crunchy parmesan lavash. Take care not

to overindulge on these treats: portions here are ample and you’ll want to have room for every course. Brant Point Grill’s spring menu has a delicious array of hot and cold appetizers to start your meal. We began with New England Clam Chowder, as promised on the menu, clearly made “from scratch.” This is the best clam chowder our team has tasted in years! It has just the right balance of clams and cream, with plenty of tender shellfish, potatoes, smoky bacon, and a sensational finish Wedge Salad of fine herbs. The chowder is garnished with a very tasty crisp clam fritter. Next, at the suggestion of our server, Joseph, we tasted the Duck Confit. This appetizer is full of warm flavors that warm your belly and your soul during these chilly spring evenings. The duck is meltingly tender and flanked by firm green lentils and by a cube of tallegio cheese that is breaded, fried crisp, and topped with a sweet onion jam. (Suggested pairing: Belle Glos, Pinot Noir, Taylor Lane Vineyard, 2010 Sonoma Coast) The duck is just one of the preparations in which Chef Pearson demonstrates his grasp of the intricate relationship between texture and taste. Another is the Coriander Crusted Ahi Tuna Carpaccio, which features thin slices of pink tuna edged with a whisper of spice and adorned with shavings of parmesan, crisp slices of radish, and dots of mellow black garlic puree. A scattering of capers and pickled mushrooms adds delightful pops of puckery flavor. (Suggested pairing: Pine Ridge, Chenin Blanc/Viognier Blend, 2011) Another of our favorites among Chef Pearson’s spring appetizers is the Fresh BPG Ricotta. This is served in a precise and artistic composition, building on a contrast of flavors and textures. Dollops of soft, snowy-white ricotta are rich and creamy. New England Lobster Salad Tucked alongside are thin

tender-crisp spears of spring asparagus, delicately crunchy slivers of marcona almonds, spoonfuls of black quinoa, and sweet honeycomb. We like this best in combination: some ricotta with a couple of almonds, a little quinoa, and a bit of the honeycomb—creamy, crunchy, nutty, and sweet. (Suggested pairing: Domaine du Chateaux de Pierreclos, Pouilly-Fuisse, 2009 Burgundy, France) Spring Vegetable Risotto Even Chef Pearson’s salads deserve high praise. The New England Lobster Salad is thoughtfully constructed, with a cool, clean spectrum of flavors. Entree-sized, the big chunks of sweet, moist lobster are combined with diced celery and herbs in a light aioli. This simple mix is served alongside fresh greens tossed in a bright lemon vinaigrette with bite-sized oven dried cherry tomatoes. (Suggested pairing: Perrier Jouët, Brut, Champagne, NV, France) Every Wedge Salad should be as much fun as the one served at Brant Point Grill, the iceberg lettuce is chopped into a trio of small wedges, with a tangy buttermilk blue cheese dressing poured overtop. Chef Pearson makes this classic his own with rings of pickled red onion, squiggles of creamy avocado puree, sweet oven dried cherry tomatoes, half a Prime Aged Rib Eye hard-boiled egg, a thick slice of smoky bacon, and a thin slice of toasted bread for the croutons. Chef Pearson’s entrees also sing with vivid flavor. Freshness and high quality ingredients are key: only USDA Prime steaks are served, and the fish (which Chef Pearson confessed is his favorite food to cook because “it’s so versatile”) is fresh from the docks. Any of the steaks offered here will please a steak-lover. We opted for the massive 16-ounce Prime Aged Rib Eye, which arrived perfectly medium-rare to order, with its fatty edge charred to an irresistible crust. This handsome steak is full of big, beefy flavor and served simply with a contrasting topping of herbs and a few cloves of roasted garlic. Steakhouse style, you can order your choice of eight housemade sauces and sides to accompany. We recommend the Wild Mushroom Sauce, the BPG Steak Sauce, and an order of their hot, sweet, and crunchy Onion Rings. (Suggested pairing: Jack Larkin, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009

Napa Valley) Vegetarians will be just as happy as carnivores at Brant Point Grill this season. Far from being an afterthought, the vegetarian entree is a delightful Spring Vegetable Risotto, creamy and full of garden fresh flavor with the chef’s tiny pickled mushrooms added to lift the richness. (Suggested pairing: Weingut Pieil, Grüner Veltliner, 2011, New England Littleneck Clams & Pappardelle Workersdorf, Austria) One of our BPG favorites from last year is back better than ever: the New England Littleneck Clams & Pappardelle. Tender chopped clams and sweet tomato are tossed into a tangle of pasta bathed in a rich and garlicky champagne butter. More clams—tiny, tender steamers—garnish the top of this summer dish. (Suggested pairing: Cantine Antonio Caggiano, Falanghina, 2009, Campania, Italy) The table favorite among Chef Pearson’s spring entrees is his Roasted Nantucket Fluke. The meaty fish is sparkling fresh, cooked through but moist, and served on an herb beurre blanc. Freshly steamed mussels and clams still nestled in their open shells are served alongside, with a bulb of fennel and a tasty salt cod fritter. It’s the perfect seaside meal to enjoy at one of Nantucket’s only harborside restaurants. (Suggested pairing: Kuntz, Dry Riesling, Kabinett, Germany) Between the BPG pastry and “bar maid” desserts, there are a half-dozen ways to end your meal. We recommend the indulgent Bread Pudding. Served warm, fragrant with cinnamon, and drizzled with caramel sauce, this and the scoop of ice cream served alongside is all you need for a grand finale. If you prefer a spirited finish to your meal, then you can retire to the cozy and clubby BPG Bar for a pre-Prohibition classic: Barrel Aged Manhattan that is mixed and aged in an oak barrel with medium char and emerges smoother than the newly mixed version, with a tinge of smokiness. They also serve an excellent selection of cognac, scotch, bourbon, port, sherry, madeira. Time it right and you can savor your cocktails while listing to the music of the Bob Lehman Trio.
