Then & Now: Growing Up on Nantucket by Sarah Teach Times are a’changing. The CEO of a Japanese Fortune 500 company and the lady who delivers your mail will both tell you so. Is change less pronounced out here on “yesterday’s island” than in the rest of the world? Eighty-nine-year-old Karl Lindquist, who grew up on Nantucket in the 1920s and 30s, offers an intimate look into early 20th century childhood on the island. A modern perspective comes from 13-year-old Cameron Gottlieb, who is currently spending his teen years as a year-round resident of the island. Over the past nine decades on Nantucket, everything has changed and nothing has changed. These two fellows tell the tale best. Some say that being a “real” islander requires that one actually be born on the island. Lindquist describes the pride locals take in being a “Nantucket native.” In 1925, Lindquist’s expectant mother was unconvinced of the island hospital’s childbirth care prowess, so she opted to deliver her baby off-island. Four or five years after baby Karl emerged, his mother divulged to him his birthplace. He writes in his memoir, Youth Interrupted: A Nantucket Boy at War in Europe: “[Discovering that I was not born on Nantucket] disturbed me to no end, and so when I was asked about being a native, I would reply, ‘No, I would have been, but my mother was off-island at the time.’” Gottlieb and most of his 11 classmates, who are just finishing seventh grade at Nantucket New School, were born in Nantucket Cottage Hospital in the early 2000s. Contrasting the viewpoint commonly held by Nantucket’s older generations, Gottlieb doesn’t believe being born on-island makes a kid any more of an islander than his peers. “Tourists think you’re really cool, though!” he exclaims, adding, “But we really don’t care one way or the other.” Growing up on the island allowed both Lindquist and Gottlieb to enjoy the very best of the sailing world. The older man says, “Sailing was to be a lifelong pleasure, which began when I learned to sail at age 12 in my own Beetle Cat.” (To make this purchase, young Lindquist had proudly handed over his newspaper route earnings.) Surprisingly, not many of Lindquist’s island friends had anything to do with the ocean. He surmises, “These days, I think the younger people are doing more of what the summer people are doing; for example, swim-
ming, sailing and sport fishing. When I was a youth, these were the things summer people did, not the natives. I suspect it is less insular now with the internet and social media.” Gottlieb certainly takes advantage of the vast body of water that lies just minutes from his front door. And as much as he loves sailing, he holds swimming and windsurfing in equally high regard. On many a spring day, he can be found in the yard helping his father prepare the family’s windsurfing equipment for the season. When he gets his land legs back, Gottlieb revels in the camaraderie and competition of soccer. Cleats and shin guards are not an unusual look for him. Lindquist wasn’t big on soccer, but he hails back to his high school basketball days, recalling a parKarl Lindquist ticularly joyous moment when his last-second layup won the game for his team. Due to his involvement in sports, Gottlieb travels off-island almost every weekend, which is much more frequently than most modern islanders make the trip, and certainly more than young Lindquist ever did. “The mainland is big. Too big!” says Gottlieb, extending both hands to his sides. In his book, Lindquist recalls his first time traveling off-island at age six, around 1931. He writes, “I was struck with a great feeling of loss and sadness when I looked at a passerby. It struck me that I would never see that person again or get to know them.” Gottlieb too appreciates the smallness of Nantucket. He says, “Living on an island is cool because when you play on a sports team, you’re most likely friends with your teammates, or you at least just know them. My friend Sam who moved off-island says that he doesn’t even know half the kids on his team!” continued on page 15

Impact of Arts & Culture In an effort to foster and enhance the arts and cultural community on Nantucket, representatives from the Artists Association of Nantucket, the Nantucket Arts Council, and ReMain Nantucket are hosting arts leader Kate D. Levin in a public presentation and have invited her to informally meet people interested in contributing to our island’s cultural community. During her talk in the Nantucket Atheneum’s Great Hall on Tuesday, June 3 from 5 to 6:30 pm, she will discuss the value of a cultural community and address ways to foster the arts and culture in communities of all sizes. Levin is the Cultural Assets Management principal at Bloomberg Associates, a philanthropic consulting firm that collaborates with cities worldwide to improve quality of life for their citizens. Levin also oversees the Arts Program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. Committed to working with organizations of all sizes, she’s been called a “passionate and hard-working advocate for any arts group that is prepared to work hard to create a strong institution.” “We have initiated this opportunity in order to consider how we, as a community steeped in arts and culture, can develop collaborations and other ways to emphasize the vibrant and colorful nature of Nantucket,” said NAC board president John Miller. “We hope people will join us for a thoughtful conversation and to consider ways to connect ideas, needs, and, yes, dreams for our community.” “Levin’s expertise in helping small neighborhoods and communities develop robust cultural economies is the principal reason why we thought she’d be a good fit for Nantucket,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “It is our hope that her presentation will inspire us all to seek out ways to expand the reach and significance of the arts here.” Levin also served as Commissioner of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Managing the largest single arts funder in the U.S., she increased support for cultural organizations, and expanded creative sector participation in economic development, tourism, human service and education initiatives.

How Not to Embarrass Yourself When Bringing Your Own by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Nantucket is a special place, and sometimes we have our own rules that do not apply to other locales. No, you still can't drink and drive here. You still have to wear your seatbelt, just like in the rest of America. But for those of you who to come to visit from Boston, New York, Florida, and beyond, local restaurants on-island that have a license to serve alcohol do not allow you to bring your own bottle, also known as BYOB. You may insist on doing this at your favorite establishments elsewhere in the world and pay what is known as a “corkage fee” for opening what is usually a bottle of wine, but this is not the case on Nantucket. The good news is, however, that there are a handful of restaurants on island that do not have alcohol licenses, and they do allow you to bring your own libations. In fact, if you don't bring your own bottles to these places, then you have a “Vino 911” situation. But more on that later. Here are some important BYOB Etiquette Tips that you need to know in order to avoid embarrassing yourself when bringing your own bottle(s) to any restaurant. Call Ahead. Call the restaurant ahead of time to confirm whether or not you can bring your own wine. Be sure to inquire if there are any corkage fees or a limit to the number of wines that you can bring. Some establishments will charge you a set fee per bottle based on the size of the bottle (magnums may cost more because they hold the same amount of wine as two regular 750 ml sized bottles). Others may charge a fee per drinker (not necessarily how many are in your party), with an unlimited number of bottles. Fees can range from as continued on page 11

DINNER?
Edible Nantucket by Dr. Sarah Oktay, Director, University of Massachusetts Nantucket Field Station Maybe I am hungry every time I write this column? This week I wanted to remind everyone of the incredible variety of natural foods on Nantucket. There are many fine restaurants on island, and this is Spring Restaurant Week so you should get out there and try some of the best food I have ever had in my life. Did you know that more than fifty species of plants and animals endemic to Nantucket are not only edible, but tasty? Local chefs and mixologists use the island’s bounty and organic produce to put healthy vibrant food on our plates. You can explore the natural world while you learn about edible foraging. You don’t even have to resort to eating bugs. Just look around as you walk our trails or sail our waters; food is everywhere. I was reminded of our edible planet while removing the highly invasive introduced garlic mustard with the Nantucket Invasive Plant Species Committee which is part of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative. Throughout the year we work on removing or treating plots of exotic invasive plants, create brochures explaining what to plant instead of plants not native to the island, and develop protocols for homeowners and land managers regarding invasive plant management. The past two weeks we have been pulling large stands of garlic mustard around the Old Mill and on Vesper Lane. The bad news is, garlic mustard is tough to eradicate and takes several years of pulling them before they go to seed to make progress. The good news is you can make a tasty pesto from the leaves after blanching them. You can find a ton of recipes here: www.phcwpma.org/GarlicMustard/2013/gm_recipes.pdf. Japanese knotweed is also a local pernicious edible invasive plant. This foragers’ blog, www.eattheweeds.com/japanese-knotweed-dreadable-edible/ describes the plant and lists knotweed recipes. When they finally flashed I175 on the screen at the Department of Motor Vehicles, I wandered up to a pleasant fleshy woman who wore glasses on a chain of plastic pearls, a green vest, and a big orange button with two children and the question “Ask Me About My Grandchildren.” She me to look at the screen again and read the top line. Then, she asked me to hold both sides of the machine and try to read the top line that way. Then, she smiled in that pleasant way that nurses do when they are holding a needle, and gave me a sheet of paper for my optometrist to fill out when I got my glasses. I have not needed glasses. My eyesight has been keen enough to find golfballs slicing vigorously into the trees, Dunkin' Donut signs at a half mile, and the last jelly bean in the candy dish. Nonetheless, after I failed a series of tests in the doctor’s office, he confided in me. “I am glad you aren’t driving next to me.” So I have my first set of glasses. They blaze a style carried forth from the fifties and would not look inappropriate on Don Draper, his partners, or any of the waiters who bring him his “Old Fashioneds.” I am unrecognizable in the mirror, but I am in much finer detail. The gray hair, the beard, the oddly shaped lines in my forehead; all of these are as clear now as the signs on the road. And the signs on the road are visible to me again. Like everyone else, I assumed that what I had now was as good as it gets. I didn’t think anyone could read the Madaket Road speed limit signs or the sandwich boards on Old South Road, but now they leap to my eyes. I can read license plates, street signs, and can spots rabbits seconds before they run under the tires. While it is a comfort for my passengers to know that I am not Mr. Magooing around the island, I am not sure if it actually makes a difference. I can see cars, intersections, and pedestrians with more detail now than I could before, but they weren’t invisible to me. Instead, I am invisible to them. Somehow an old Toyota with a rusted out shock absorbers can, shark like, slip up behind four women with four sets of sunglasses, flip flops, pedicures, and Red Cups walking up the center of Centre Street. The photographer for their shoot must have been on the wrong street. The young have taken the month of May and swiped it like a road sign. On Friday afternoon, they stood fifty deep outside one downtown establishment while two others, a half block away welcomed the usual dozen swells and sailors. Twitter has focussed word of mouth as if it came through a fire hose. One bar gets soaked and the others on either side stayed dry. They were comfortable in line. I could see that now, clearly. The cherry blossoms had dropped in petalfall, then drifted around the painted and sandaled feet. Everyone wore sunglasses, but used either the top quarter of the glass, or the bottom tenth. The men were in loafers, linen shorts, and one of Tommy’s shirts. The women wore the same labels, but better, with expensive sandals, scarves, and small, discreet tattoos. They held each other in rapt attention, either in person or on their phones. A selfie flashed every second: they were ready to check their privilege at the door. Youth protects itself. Arrayed in beauty and armed in smiles, it forms phalanxes of pleasure and good will. They are having a good time and it will only

Comedy Duo Perform at NCF Benefit “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll fetch paper towels,” promise national headline comics Karen Morgan and Jim Colliton about their “Laughing Over Spilt Milk” performance set for Saturday, May 31, 7:30 p.m., at the Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center. Admission to the performance is $20, with tickets available at the door or in advance in the “Performances” section at www.nantucketdreamland.org. Morgan and Colliton will perform their hilarious comedy about life in the suburbs: mowing grass, talking trash. and the better halves that make us laugh. Wrote one reviewer: “Through stand up comedy, audience participation, and a hilarious couples game show, Morgan and Colliton take audiences on a crazy drive through their very funny neighborhoods.” Colliton grew up in the suburbs of Boston and has appeared as the featured comedian in venues across the U.S. and Canada. His first comedy album “Stories from the Suburbs” won “Best Comedy Album” from recording and music industry professionals at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards. Morgan, who grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, now lives in Portland, Maine, and was a finalist in Nickelodeon’s Nick at Night search for the “Funniest Mom in America.” Morgan’s and Colliton’s appearance benefits Stand Up & Learn, the remarkable experiential youth education effort by Nantucket Comedy Festival that has helped dozens of kids from 8 to 18, including those with learning disabilities and in need of higher functioning social skills, to be creative and confident through conceiving, creating, and performing comedy. The Nantucket Comedy Festival recently extended its 2013-2014 series of “Find Your Funny” workshops for youth through Monday, June 9, as part of the organization’s year-round program. So far this year, nearly 100 Nantucket children and youth have attended the workshops. Another in the series takes place Saturday morning, May 31, at 10 a.m. in the Dreamland Theater. Delights of Spring by Leah Mojer I don’t know what has possessed me this spring to delve so deep in the DIY methods of food preparation. Maybe it’s the damp cold spring we are having that is keeping me plenty busy indoors or the recent excursion to western mass for the opportunity to forage for wild edibles. Maybe it’s the many springs I spent outdoors as a child observing the tiny purple crocuses straining in the frigid temperatures or the delight it brought to see the first fiddlehead ferns popping through the mud by the brook. Maybe I am just grateful for the rebirth of spring. The way it must start from scratch each and every year! Whatever the reason, I am inspired and welcome the urge to cook, can, make, and forage whenever possible and want to share my current spring cooking obsessions with you. Ramps are the proverbial canary in the mine for chefs chomping at the bit for springs culinary bounty. They are technically wild leeks, and they are gone almost as soon as they pop up, usually only 8 weeks a year in the spring. When ramps show up on the scene, you can be sure they will be on every seasonal menu from here to Texas. I had the chance to hunt for these garlicky beauties in western mass a couple weeks back with some luck. In keeping with sustainable practices though, I spared the roots and cut just above to let the ramps regenerate for next season, and only took what I could eat in a week or so (my own rule). They are supposedly great pickled but I thought I would try them fresh this time around.

The final jam should be just moist and shiny. Pack into jars and can in a water bath or refrigerate up to 2 weeks. Serve with home made ricotta on toast or with spicy indian food! continued on page 23

low as no charge (and possibly little to no service either, in which case don't forget to bring your own opener as well), to a moderate $10-$15, or as much as $50 per bottle. A restaurant that does have an alcohol license but still allows BYOB may choose to charge a corkage fee based on the cost of their lowest priced wine. They may also ask that you avoid bringing something that is currently on their list, even if it is a different vintage. Bring Something Worthy. Check out the menu at the establishment and bring a wine that is not only appropriate to the cuisine, but also matches the ambiance of the restaurant and the mood of the evening. Bring something special enough that will make the experience memorable without being cheap just to save money on the alcohol portion of the bill. Keep in mind that it is totally acceptable to bring a backup bottle in case you have a bad one or find that you want to drink more. There is nothing worse than having a Vino 911 and having to call your local wine shop to make a speedy delivery so that your night is not ruined. Unless it’s the misfortune of showing up empty handed, not knowing that the restaurant was BYOB. In Massachusetts, you can take your unfinished wine home with you as long as it is properly bagged by the restaurant when departing. You should also only be charged a corkage fee based upon what is opened. Be Generous. Some people do not tip on corkage, but it is still a service being offered that needs to be acknowledged. When you bring your “Catch of the Day” to a restaurant for the chef to prepare and you are charged a plating fee, you still tip on that amount, correct? So why wouldn't it be the same for proper wine service? (I use the term proper because, let's face it, if the service isn't up to your standards, that's a different story.) For most establishments, the corkage fee goes to the house, not to the sommelier or server who prepared your glasses, opened and decanted your wine, and poured it throughout the evening. As a gesture of good will, offer a taste of your wine to the server or chef or leave a little in the bottle for them to enjoy at the end of the night when they finish their shift. This gives you the opportunity to look like a wine pro by sharing the bottle that you brought and being able to talk about why this wine excites you. This also sets you up for success with good rapport for the next time you frequent the establishment. What Not To Do. It may seem elementary to some of you, but don't bring something from the two for $10 bin. You are worth more than that when you go out to eat, whether or not it is a special occasion. Do not bring a sparkling or white wine that has not been properly chilled and thus isn’t ready to drink upon arrival. If you are purchasing your wine last minute on the way to the restaurant, many wine stores have coolers that are stocked full of cold wine ready to go. Same for reds; don't come with wine that is too warm from sitting in your hot car all day. (Yuck!) And of course, remember to remove the price tag before your arrival. Carry your bottle with pride in a nice bag, not something that makes you look like a hobo coming in off the street. Lastly, remember that BYOB is exactly what the acronym means, with the last letter meaning “bottle.” This bottle doesn't just have to be wine for dinner. Sparkling wine can be brought to make mimosas at brunch. A great selection of specialty beers come in different bottle shapes and sizes, as does tequila, gin, and a slew of other liquors. Just be sure to follow the etiquette steps above with these other bottle selections as well, and don't be surprised if they do charge you for the mixers!

buckwheat family so it makes sense that we can eat it. Semi-famous forager and natural foods guru Steve (Wildman) Brill has recipes here: http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Plants.Folder/Knotweed.html . Brill also describes a hilarious incident that happened to him in Central Park when he was arrested for eating dandelions: his court case ended well when he was eventually hired to lead official city park tours that encouraged the foraging of the dandelion, one of nature’s super foods. Dandelions are abundant everywhere and every part of the plant can be used to make wonderful salads, teas, and wine. In addition to dandelions, there are many varieties of wild mint and herbs that make excellent teas that can be found throughout the spring and early summer months. Other wild plants growing around the island used by Wampanoags and early settlers for food include wild onions. As you explore the trails at Squam Swamp and Squam Farm and elsewhere around the island you’ll find hazelnuts, hickories, and beech nuts. You may recall the cattail article I wrote two years ago (found at yesterdaysisland.com/2012/science/Catails.php) that describes the myriad of ways you can eat a cattail. If you look around the trail in the Serengeti you’ll find wild wintergreen. This website, http://the3foragers.blogspot.com/2011/12/wintergreen.html shows you pictures of the plant and gives advice on when to start looking for it. Foraging in fall gives us a variety of mushrooms such as puffballs, black chanterelles, Boletus edulis, and chicken mushrooms. Make sure you know what you are doing though, consult a guide like the excellent article “Mushroom Foraging” by Kara Cusolito (ediblecapecod.com/online-magazine/fall-2009/mushroom-foraging/) and heed the advice found at capecodmushroom.org. Mushroom foraging clubs on Cape Cod are extremely popular and they can be a great source of information. Our landscape and climate allow for a plethora of food. Fruits and berries that can be found on Nantucket include: beach plums, black cherries, rose hips (Rosa rugosa, also an introduced species), blueberries (high and low bush), huckleberries, dewberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, fox grapes, and cranberries. Our native beach plums are blooming now. This salt tolerant and cold hardy plant produces drupes that make an excellent jam. By now, every trall-walking Nantucketer has already staked out blueberry and beach plum hotspots that look like they’ll produce well. In the marsh we find Salicornia virginica also known as American glasswort, “sea beans,” or pickleweed. This is a favorite food to try on our marsh walks, every school group that visits has one student who is fascinated that so much of nature around us can be eaten and insists on trying almost everything edible. continued on page 18

Murray’s Toggery Shop, an island institution since 1945, is a store that proves year after year that they know Nantucket style and what our islanders and visitors are looking for when it comes to clothing and accessories for the whole family. Located at the top of Main Street, Murray’s has been a staple of Nantucket fashion for sixty-nine years. Murray’s has a way of keeping the classic looks they are known for while evolving with the times and constantly changing trends of the fashion world. Just recently they launched a new brand called the M Crest Collection, fine apparel mostly for men, all made in the USA. Included in this line are a new slim fit Nantucket Reds! pants and shorts, as well as Nantucket Reds! neck ties, bow ties, cummerbunds, and pocket squares. The M Crest logo also appears on their embroidered belts available in two different accent colors. New and exciting for the ladies this year is The Classic Clutch, a recent addition to the M Crest Collection. This stylish handbag screams summer on Nantucket! The exterior is their signature Nantucket Reds! fabric and the interior is a nautical navy, a bag perfect for days at the brewery and nights on the town! Murray’s Toggery Shop is open daily.

Growing Up
vided by these solo journeys. He got to know the folks at the steamship, the train conductor, the woman at the YMCA where he would spend the night. “It was a very friendly world for me,” he says. The 11-year-old redheaded Nantucketer on an orthodontic mission must have been quite a charming sight for 1930s Bostonians. When asked about his modern off-island experiences, Gottlieb releases a deep sigh and says slowly, “The world has changed.” He maintains a caution when he is on the mainland, citing an uncertainty over which places are “kidfriendly” and which are “sketchy areas.” Blue eyes wide, he raises his brows and declares, “It’s hard to know what to stay away from.” Even when Lindquist was young, traveling off-island was always not a walk in Boston Common. Lindquist remembers the 1920s and ‘30s as a time when winter weather regularly prevented islanders from leaving Nantucket. The Wright brothers’ flying machine hadn’t quite taken off in a commercial sense; so flying to and from Nantucket wasn’t an option. Lindquist writes, “The steamboat was our only way of reaching the mainland, and often, because of storms or ice, it could not make the passage. In winter, ice could spread as far as out as you could see. The icebreaker from the mainland would have to lead a steamer in. It would plow full speed into the ice, clearing a narrow channel until it could go no farther, then back up and make another run, over and over, often not reaching the harbor. Passengers were left to walk in over the ice, and no freight or supplies could be hauled to shore. This did not bother us much–we were our own little world and we took a certain pride in having it that way.” Even in 2014, weather-related travel problems are not a thing of Nantucket’s past. Gottlieb recalls, “One time, we were up against Martha’s Vineyard and they’re, you know, our big rivals. The weather was so bad we couldn’t get off the island, so our game was rescheduled. Then it happened again that the weather made us reschedule. And by the time we had a third chance to play them, it was so late in the season that they just cancelled it.” Gottlieb grins and gazes downward in concession. “Pretty disappointing not to get to go play them.” Young Lindquist would have been just as crestfallen; he confirms that the searing Nantucket/Vineyard rivalry–especially when it came to football–was ablaze in his day as well. Come winter, snow days turn into sledding days for Gottlieb and his friends. They usually head to Dead Horse Valley, which Gottlieb jokingly calls “pretty much the only hill on the island.” Back before the days of heavy traffic, Lindquist and his friends sledded right down Main Street. Gottlieb and his friends are able to do this from time to time, but only on especially snowy days when the town shuts down the main drag. Winter boredom is a typical complaint of year-
from page 3
Gottlieb stares me down, letting his emphasis sink in. With 21st century organized team sports comes traveling. Fortunately, Gottlieb doesn’t mind it. “Living on Nantucket is cool because you get to travel on boats. I bet some people who live in maybe Oklahoma or one of those states in the middle of the country” (he ponders his current coordinates for a moment then gestures westward) “have never even seen the ocean! We’re also lucky with the temperatures. We get to have seasons. One thing I don’t like is that Nantucket doesn’t really have a spring, though. Sometimes when you’re listening to [Cape Cod radio station] WCOD and they say, ‘Spring has sprung!’ you want to be like, ‘Hey, not fair!’ But it’s really uplifting when the seasons change and it starts getting warm again.” But not long after shorts and sandals weather commences, Gottlieb is ready to get off-island. “I don’t want to spend a lot of time here in the summer,” he confesses. “It’s so crowded. People tell me that the most crowded is like, July.” Gottlieb is happy to escape to his family’s home in Avignon, France during Nantucket’s most congested months. His parents, Karen and Seth Gottlieb, wisely decided that their four children should understand that there is life outside of Nantucket. “Another downside is ticks,” says Gottlieb. “That’s a big one. I’ve never been bitten. I’ve only ever found one crawling on me once, probably because I don’t go into the brush.” Avoiding Nantucket’s Lyme-carrying deer ticks is a lesson that is drilled into Nantucket kids’ heads from toddlerhood. Lindquist does not recall ticks being a health issue during his childhood. “I was not aware of anyone getting sick from a tick bite,” he says. “After blueberrying on the moors, we always did an inspection when we got home. They were just a nuisance to be picked off.” But for every downside to living on Nantucket, there’s a stronger upside, according to Gottlieb. He says, “I also like living on an island because you don’t have to drive like a million miles to get to a place.” Gottlieb is fortunate to have all the necessary amenities of modern life right here on the island. Lindquist’s era was less auspicious. He writes, “When I was 11, I needed to get braces on my teeth. Since there was no orthodontist on the island, I had to go to Boston. I remember my mom taking me up to Boston on the boat, then the train and next the streetcar to the clinic. We returned to the city to get a room for the night, returning to the island the next day. She went with me the first time then said, ‘There, Karl, you know how to go now, so you can do it alone next time.’” Little Lindquist had to make the trip every two months for the next year; the family simply didn’t have enough money for his mother to accompany him. But the boy loved the independence pro-

AAN Gallery Named Best in New England The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is delighted to announce that the Editors’ of Yankee Magazine have named the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery as the Best Art Gallery in New England for 2014. “We are quite delighted with this unexpected honor and are thrilled to be acknowledged by such an old and established publication,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “The fact that we are the only art gallery mentioned as editors’ choice in all of New England is a wonderful tribute to our talented artists and capable AAN team.” “More than 240 active artists belong to the Artists Association, which mounts changing exhibitions of their work in a two-level gallery space. Many focus on island scenes, so it’s a great opportunity to take a fresh look at Nantucket’s beaches, marshes, and weathered old buildings through the eyes of an artist,” writes Yankee. “The May/June issue has just hit the stands, thus is quite timely considering the gallery has recently reopened for our 69 season. This impartial distinction is marvelous because it not only recognizes the amazing range of our artists, it is a terrific credit to our entire organization,” said AAN gallery sales manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “It’s a proud moment for all of us.” The AAN includes more than 200 artist members who display their work during fourteen changing exhibitions throughout the season including island-made jewelry, oil, acrylics, & watercolor paintings, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and encaustic works. The Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery is located at 19 Washington Street, and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. For more details about the Artists Association of Nantucket, and their 2014 programs, classes, workshops, and events, visit their website at www.nantucketarts.org or call 508-228-0722.

Salicornia is a succulent salty herb that grows along the intertidal edges of salt marshes and it’s delicious sautéed in stir fry dishes or as an additive to salads. It can even be eaten raw right on the trail. Our junior rangers really get into the edible plant kick each summer. When they lead nature walks, they teach people about the many edible plants in the environment and also describe the medicinal properties of common Nantucket natives such as the juniper berries on the Eastern red cedar trees (Juniperus virginiana). Smell one of the cones or berries later this year and you will easily detect the smell of gin, which has long been flavored with this plant. It has also been used as a digestive and as a kidney medicine. The junior rangers make sumac tea each year. The smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) and the staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) are used to make a beverage called “sumac-ade,” “Indian lemonade” or “rhus juice.” This drink is made by soaking the drupes in cool water, rubbing them to extract the essence, straining the liquid through a cotton cloth and sweetening it. Don’t panic, these are not the poisonous varieties. You know what would go well with that tea? Some Nantucket native honey! There are many beekeepers on island and they all produce amazing honey. Recent research with the help of Nantucket students shows that this honey is very low in pesticides, maybe lower than mainland varieties, so definitely look for their product in stores and at the Farmer’s market. We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface on the types of game and sea life sustaining us now and long considered staples for the Wampanoag, the early Woodland peoples, and settlers over the past 400 years. Striped bass, blue fish, quahogs, littlenecks, oysters, blue crabs, bay scallops, lobsters (on the small side), bonitos, scup, summer flounder, false albacore, conch (whelks), blue mussels, slipper shells (sweetmeats) are some of the fish and shellfish produced in our harbor and surrounding waters. If you go on a charter boat or your own boat way offshore (20-70 miles) you’ll be able to catch large game fish like blue and yellowfin tuna, big eye tuna, blue and white marlin, mahi mahi and offshore sharks such as mako and blue. Fresh water ponds provide white and yellow perch, pickerel, snapping turtles, sunfish, and crappie. You can find some excellent information and get involved in a great pastime by checking out the Nantucket Angler’s Club website www.nantucketanglersclub.com/index.php . Back on land we find that deer, rabbits, and various water fowl, even squirrels (yep, I AM from Oklahoma) grace many Nantucket tables year round. I’ve been fortunate to attend dinner parties that were completely prepared using local native foods. Check out Sustainable Nantucket's Farmers & Artisans Market which starts June 7 to try locally grown produce and honey.

get better. The cover charge, the tips, the rounds of drinks fall before the good time wave. Perhaps its Dad’s money, perhaps it’s the rent, perhaps it’s the student loan, but someone else is counting. And that someone else is a problem for another day. Later that night, I passed another line at the Chicken Box. Same shoes, same outfits, and even the same glasses at nine in the evening. The line stretched down Dave Street and could have been one hundred and fifty deep. You wonder what the last guy in line is thinking. You wonder what he is hoping to find in a jammed Chicken Box by the time he finally gets in there. My eyes are good enough to look back almost thirty years to see myself standing in line at the Chicken Box for Toots and the Maytals or the Savage Brothers. I could have been walking downtown in silly shorts with my red cup and my attitude. I wanted to be where things happened, and things happened at the Chicken Box. Shortly after passing the Paradise on Dave Street, we drove into town and settled in a quiet restaurant. The young were there as well. They stood at the center of the bar with big smiles, flashing eyes, and a round dozen wine bottles before them. We listened to them laugh and gossip, then we hid and settled in behind our menus. My eyes remain sharp and focused on menus; the appetizers and the desserts remain clear and distinct before me. Then, as we prepared to order, one of the young offered us the rest of her bottle of rose and another bottle of Pinot. We smiled, thanked them, and saw them, truly, for the first time. Then, of cpurse, we toasted them. Youth need not check its privilege. It matters then. Years into the future, the arrogance and the presumption that walks down the middle of the street will shame the eyes and shrivel the soul, but at that slippery moment in time, every gesture felt like an action. And every action would bring about change. Age and perspective robs us of certainty. We peer into the murky distance and guess what might be out there. We keep our wine to ourselves and sneer in the shadows. But youth sees itself and its world all too clearly; the possibilities excite, things are going to happen, and we might as well share the wine.

FRESH EGG PASTA
Wednesday - Saturday
4 eggs (or 1 Goose Egg!) 2 C “00” Flour or AP will work in a pinch 1 T Olive Oil 1/4 C Water 1 tsp Kosher Salt In a large bowl add flour and make a well in the middle. Add eggs, water, oil and salt. Make a wide fingered claw with your dominant hand and in a circular motion, gently “whisk” egg mixture into flour, pressing fingers down into the bottom of the bowl, gradually incorporating flour until the mixture comes together, two minutes. Don’t worry if there are flour remnants in the bottom of the bowl, you don’t want that dry stuff anyway. Turn dough out onto a well floured surface. Over your spent bowl, rub fingers together to get most of the dried bits off. Here’s the fun part! Knead dough, adding flour gradually until your hands become clean and the dough is soft but not at all sticky. Knead for at MINIMUM of 10 minutes, as vigorously as you can muster! The dough is done when you can pull a piece off and stretch thin enough to see light through. If it breaks apart before you can get a good stretch, you’re not done kneading. This is what bakers call the “final finish.” When your dough is soft, stretchy, and somewhat shiny with a nice deep yellow hue, dust with flour and wrap in plastic wrap. Let it rest 30 minutes or up to 24 hours. Use immediately. Any longer and the dough’s delicate flavors will start to subside. I have never attempted to freeze it but I guess why not?

the Nantucket Athe-neum, which is located at 1 India Street. Each stop provides directions to the next storefront, where you will find the next page of the story. The StoryWalk brings you to 14 storefronts. My Garden was written by well-known children’s author and illustrator Kevin Henkes. It is the tale of a little girl who enjoys her mother’s garden, and dreams of having a garden of her own someday. Pauline Cronin, Activities Specialist at Nantucket Community School, chose the book based on its simplicity. She says, “There are not a lot of words in the book, so it fuels kids’ imaginations. If your child is an early reader, then he or she will be able to read it at five, six, or seven.” As fun as it is to read on your own, Cronin still recommends the StoryWalk for children who aren’t reading quite yet. The StoryWalk can be done any time, day or night. Just remember to use the sidewalks provided, and be careful when crossing the road. Sometimes it’s easy to forget to pay attention to traffic when you’re having fun on Nantucket. At the end of the StoryWalk, you will land back at the Atheneum and receive a bookmark prize. Not only will the kids be tuckered out and ready for a nice, long nap, they’ll be even more excited about reading! The StoryWalk is funded through the Coordinated Family & Community Engagement Grant provided by the Department of Early Education & Care.

Vol. 44 No. 4 • Our 44th Season!
Growing Up from page 15
rounders; Gottlieb keeps himself busy enough to avoid it. “This past winter, though,” says Gottlieb, “Whew! Too long! It stinks when it snows just a little bit but not enough for a snow day.” When Lindquist was a boy, he very much shared Gottlieb’s sentiment. He writes, “In the 1930s, the winters [on Nantucket] were very cold. Often the snow was waist high, and we would be stranded for a couple of days waiting for the snowplow to reach us [at our old farmhouse in Polpis]. For me, the excitement was matched only by the joy of missing school.” Unless it snows during Stroll Weekend, seasonal residents don’t see the Grey Lady cloaked in white. When Lindquist was a boy, people had only just begun summering on Nantucket in large numbers. He discusses the year-round/seasonal resident dynamic as it existed in his day: “There was not much interaction socially (or animosity, that I was aware of) between the natives and the summer population.” Gottlieb 89-year-old Karl Lindquist agrees, and draws a pragmatic angle: “The summer kids don’t have attitudes or anything. They’re just not around long enough to become good friends with them. I’d never be like, ‘Want to go see a movie?’ or anything. With my [year-round] friends, all our parents know each other, and our friends’ parents know each other, too.” Gottlieb says he is sociable with a couple of summer kids through his involvement with Strong Wings Adventure School and Nantucket Community Sailing. In Lindquist’s memoir, he too names sailing as the conduit between himself and summer kids: “By the age of 16,” he writes, “I had become a master sailor, sought after by Nantucket Yacht Club members to teach their sons and daughters the techniques of sailing and sailboat racing. This gave me access to a whole group of young people my age. I was a local and they were the summer crowd. Normally, the two did not mix. Yet I fit right in, even having a summer girlfriend.” “The island was my world and my normal,” continues Lindquist. “I had no sense that my childhood was different from those of other kids.” With the rise of the internet age, Gottlieb’s generation has a great deal more information about life off-island than Lindquist’s contemporaries did. Gottlieb says, “My life is definitely different from other kids. I mean, I live on an island; they don’t!” He laughs. “I haven’t decided yet whether I want to live on Nantucket when I grow up. I was thinking about it, but then I found a really cool group of islands called Madeira that are owned by Portugal. For English, we had to write a fictional essay so I made up a story about a family that sailed across the Atlantic. Their mast broke in a storm, but they found Madeira. It’s a place with good surfing and sailing. So it’s probably either there or Nantucket that I want to live.” At 13, Gottlieb has plenty of time to explore the world and decide where he’d like to settle.

Lindquist did not have the same freedom and choices that are available to Gottlieb. He did not have a computer to hop onto and research his own castle in the sky. Not that he desired to live elsewhere, anyway. He recalls, “Everyone I knew was happy to be on Nantucket. Those who did leave the island seemed to do so with regret. I never dreamed of leaving Nantucket. However, circumstances dictated otherwise. My parents sent me to boarding school on the mainland, and then came the Army, college and a career. Choosing a teaching career allowed me the great pleasure of returning with my family every summer to the cottage I built in Madaket, and to spend time with my parents. In a sense, I really never left Nantucket.” Lindquist speaks of people who did move off-island when he was a boy: “My feeling was I would never see them again, which made me sad.” Gottlieb shares Lindquist’s outlook. “If I meet somebody off-island, I don’t expect to see them ever again. They probably won’t come visit you on Nantucket. But when you live on a small island and make friends with somebody who also lives here, you have more of a chance to see that person again,” he explains. Gottlieb continues, “I know a lot of people in town because my mom talks so much, and to everybody,” drawing out his last word. (It is evi13-year old Cameron Gottlieb dent that the beach plum does not fall far from the tree.) Both his parents are schoolteachers within the Nantucket Public School District (NPSD). “It’s good I don’t go [to NPSD] because then I’d have to see my parents all day,” he says wryly, and quickly adds a jovial shout to his parents, who are in the next room: “No hard feelings, guys!” Of course, it’s natural for a 13-year-old–islander or not– to desire some independence from his parents. Lindquist knows what Gottlieb is talking about. At age 17 in 1943, he was thrilled to spend his final summer as a youth on-island sans parents, who were working in Boston on the war effort. “What a fabulous feeling that was to be on my own,” Lindquist gushes. Lindquist is grateful for his Nantucket childhood. He says, “Looking back on it, Nantucket was a perfect place to grow up; and later as a parent, returning for summers, it was a great place to raise kids. Of course, that was many years ago.” Lindquist’s daughter Karol must have been born on her father’s wavelength. As an adult, she has chosen to remain an island resident, and makes a living as a master lightship basket maker. In boardroom fashion, Gottlieb clasps his hands and summarizes our interview without even being prompted: “Growing up on Nantucket definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. But I think the advantages overpower the disadvantages.” He makes sure to finish by throwing in a quick jab about how much better it is to grow up on Nantucket than the Vineyard. Lindquist says, “My happiest Nantucket memory as a young person was the freedom and safety of the island. We kids felt like we owned it!” Gottlieb’s lighthearted countenance and enthusiasm for island life tells the same tale. For you see, Nantucket is just as much “today’s island” as it is yesterday’s.

Featured Restaurant: The Restaurant at Miacomet
This Hidden Gem Is an Island Favorite You don’t have to be part of the LPGA to go to the RMGC. Even if you don’t know a birdie from an eagle and you think “under par” is a bad thing, you’ll want to swing out to Miacomet Golf Course for the fabulous food, great cocktails, and fun atmosphere of The Restaurant at Miacomet. This is one of the few clubs on Nantucket Island where you don’t need a couple of million in the bank to make a reservation or a couple of Benjamins to pay for dinner. Tucked away off a residential road about three miles from downtown Nantucket, the lush, immaculate greens of Nantucket’s only public 18-hole golf course and it’s restaurant are hidden gems. The course has been called “challenging but accessible,” a links style course rated highly among players who consider it “a real golf course for real people.” The restaurant, too, deserves high praise and is popular year-round among islanders, whether they head out there for a round of golf or a round of drinks at the spacious wrap-around bar. They serve weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, lunch daily, and dinner from Wednesday through Saturday in their comfy window-lined dining room and outside on their sheltered deck under the striped awning or on the open patio. The restaurant is situated alongside the windswept and beautifully manicured greens so the views are spectacular. We set out for this island hideaway last week for dinner, happy to be driving down pretty residential streets in the opposite direction from Figawi revelers. It’s not difficult to find The Restaurant at Miacomet, just remember to turn left at the white rock. Menus at The Restaurant at Miacomet change with the seasons, Miacomet Salad and Executive Chef Steve D’Agonistino and Chef de Cuisine Prashanth Ravi turn out dishes expertly prepared with flavor and with flair. Brunch favorites include The Breakfast Bomb, Prime Rib & Eggs, Bourbon French Toast, and their Brunchtastic Coconut Margarita. The clubhouse fills at lunchtime for their Prime Rib Chili, Fish Tacos, hearty sandwiches and salads, and Build-YourOwn Burgers. There are more than a dozen ways to start your dinner at The Restaurant at Miacomet. We cannot resist writing that this restaurant serves great greens! There are four salads on the menu, and each can be transformed from an appetizer to an entree by adding shrimp, chicken, tuna salad, lobster cakes, calamari, or burger. We sampled both the Miacomet Salad and

the Beet Salad, and were equally pleased with both. The Miacomet Salad is a vivid and vinegary toss of mixed greens, julienne carrot, sweet dried cranberries, slivers of almonds, and tangy gorgonzola. The Beet Salad is more carefully constructed but just as flavorful. For this, the greens are drizzled with a distinct lemonthyme vinaigrette thick enough to coat the leaves and surrounded by chunks of sweet red beets. Creamy goat cheese is crumbled over the top. Of the hot appetizers, we like to start with the Mini Lobster Cakes, which really aren’t all that small. The cakes are moist and have a delicious lobMini Lobster Cakes ster flavor with just enough binding to hold them together. They’re rolled in crumbs for a crunchy coating and served over a cajun sauce that adds just a spark of heat. Chefs here also make a delicious House Smoked Bluefish Pate, served with chopped pickled gherkins and whole grain mustard as well as grilled bread and pepper crackers. This is the perfect appetizer for sharing round the table. The portion is generous, so if you attempt this on your own you may have little room left for your entree. The lighter side of the dinner menu at The Restaurant at Miacomet feaHouse Smoked Bluefish Pate tures some lunchtime favorites: their Build-Your-Own Burger, Grilled Shrimp or Salmon Spinach Wrap, Traditional Fish & Chips, and Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Listed with this Light Fare are their freshly made Fried Onion Rings— sweet, and crunchy, and hot—which you will want to sample no matter what else you order. They are an ideal accompaniment to the Grilled NY Strip

The traditional Indian curry called Jalfreze — which can be ordered with vegetable, chicken, or shrimp — is another entree we love. If you don’t like spicy food, make another selection, but if you do you will be in heaven! The chicken or shrimp or vegetables are marinated and then fried with onion, bell pepper, and tomato in a fragrant mix of spices. Servings of basmati rice, chilled yogurt, and sweet mango chutney are served separately so you can calm the heat and customize your entree. Our table favorite (though the vote was very close) is the Black Tiger Shrimp Scampi. Unlike most scampi dishes, this version has more shrimp

with mushroom truffle sauce. Locals love this eatery’s Fresh Catch Chef’s Choice, which can be softshell crab, bay scallops, swordfish, tuna, haddock, or what we had: a thick halibut steak fresh from the docks. The chefs here love to demonstrate their talents with any harvest from the sea, and the halibut we were served was among the best we’d ever tasted. One side was seared to a delectably golden crispness while the middle remained moist and sweet. It was served on a chilled chipotle remoulade, which added a whisper of spice and bright flavor. A few toasted hazlenuts were strewn about the plate for a fun, crunchy accent. Even the accompaniments deserve high praise. All the entrees except the curry come with a colorful vegetable medley, which the night we dined was comprised of green beans, cauliflower, and carrot—all blanched tender without turning to mush. At the recommendation of manager Kate O’Connor, we also tried the

than pasta: big, plump shrimp that pop with flavor when you bite into them. The buttery sauce has just the right balance of garlic, white wine, and lemon, and a scattering grape tomatoes and capers add color and more bright flavors. Much to the delight of one in our party who says he doesn’t like to work for his dinner, the shrimp are served without tails. We were very glad we’d left a little room for dessert. They’d sold out of the Bread Pudding we’d heard so much about, but their individually sized Granny Smith Apple Upside Down Tart, Chocolate Mousse and their Wasted Brownie, soaked in bourbon and topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce put final smiles on our faces. Grilled Pork Chop
Grilled Pork Chop. Thanks for the tip, Kate, this chop is superb! A hefty 12 ounces, it’s cooked through but succulent. The slight smoky char from the grill is offset by sweet roasted shallots and applejack glaze.
