An Enjoyable Bout of Hay Fever by Sarah Teach It’s pollen season on Nantucket, and Hay Fever is just what you need. Theatre Workshop of Nantucket (TWN) kicks off summer with the comedy that helped British actor-turned-playwright Noël Coward (1899-1973) get his foot in the writing door. Penned in 1924, Hay Fever is 90 minutes of bliss with a family of the same name (as in, “ignorance is…”). They live in a world that is entirely their own, marked by the overdramatic. Others are invited as unwitting props into the everyday Bliss family drama, and are discarded when they lose luster, as all new toys do. Not far from inbred rednecks that build a McMansion with lottery winnings lie the Blisses, who carry on a sumptuous lifestyle that is mismatched with their social defectiveness. Without consulting any other family members, each of the four Blisses— mom, dad, and grown daughter and son—summons their own guest to the family’s estate for the weekend. Upon discovering the overlapping invitations, the Blisses fret extravagantly over potential love relationships that could form between their callers. Bit by bit, the company arrives, unknowingly stepping into a household that brandishes a cringe factor to rival the very finest reality TV. The family puts on airs as if they are excellent hosts, but pays no actual mind to their guests’ feelings. They’re too busy hopping nimbly from ecstasy to agony. As the Blisses strive to extract every drop of drama from their interpersonal exchanges, it becomes clear that their grip on reality is as strong as their barometer’s flimsy clasp on the wall. Hay Fever is a comedy, but its subgenre is hard to pin down. It is neither especially high nor low comedy, and is as much farce (with the acting profession as its victim) as it is comedy of manners. Coward grew up poor but became a master of the latter, a style that usually pokes fun at behavior within the upper class (which is not always identical to “classy” behavior). His text is dense, even continued on page 19

Cynics of Spring by Robert P. Barsanti Spring has arrived with a truck. It stopped by at noon, got its invoice signed, and then dumped everything it had in the yard. So the grass has become overgrown, the shrubs crawl up the house, and the mulch is eye high. The world is wet, muddy, and in bloom. The daffodils are leaving, the roses are coming, and the lilacs weigh down the air. My nose can’t handle the tidal wave of spring, nor can my lungs or my sinuses. I turn around and close the door and find a roll of paper towels for my face. The harsh winter brought on this sudden spring. Other winters, with the drizzle and the damp, would slowly let the flowers and trees bloom sometime in April, then fade into June. This year, when the ground froze a roof over all of the bulbs, they came busting through as soon as the mud cracked. One morning I took off my polar fleece and the garden, the yard, and the wetlands burst into life; pollinated, sneezing, red-eyed life. Still, other aspects of spring came more sedately. Andromeda climbs into the night sky as Orion slips over the evening horizon. The striped bass have returned, as have the seals and the fishermen. The landscapers are hard at work, the sailboats are slipping back into the harbor, and the new hires are learning the registers as fast as they can before July comes thundering down. Spring comes as it always does; fast or slow, but it always comes with fog, boats, and confusion. Nobody watches calendars quite the way high school seniors do. They count down the days on the chalkboards and the walls of the school until, in one terrifying moment, only one day remains. The last day of school drops with horrifying promise. For the graduates, the day comes with the first serious “never” in their lives. They will never go back to the football field, the Ms. Phaneuf’s classroom, or lunch. That “never” looms like a fog bank; it hangs purple on the eastern horizon, and then it creeps in. When they were in fifth grade, they walked around the school for one last time, but they didn’t sense the loss that their parents cried for. This time, they feel the fog slip around them. On Thursday they have the Ball, on Friday, Baccalaureate, and by Saturday night, they will have graduated and will need visitor passes at school. When you stand at the door to the Yacht Club and watch the Senior Ball unfold before you, a great cynical bolus rises up in your throat. In 2014, Prom costs around a thousand dollars for each young stalwart that steps on the red carpet. It slips away in dresses, photos, flowers, tickets, and every other little thing the pretend wedding costs. Prom has stopped being a dance and has become a fairy tale story that needs to be interpreted and enacted for each couple. Dinner, dancing, prom parties, and the final bleary-eyed breakfast after the whirlwind starts. In the last few years, “promposals” have slipped onto the menu. A young man has to come up with some public and creative performance art piece in order to passive-aggressive ask a girlfriend to prom. Fumbling words at the locker aren’t enough anymore; the request needs to come arrayed in red cups on the school steps or said on one knee in math class while wearing a wet suit. The great cynic sees a price tag on everything and a smile on none of it. Of course, the great cynic stands behind the potted plants at the entrance to the Yacht Club and remembers his own prom at the Danversport Yacht Club. It had everything that this dance didn’t. Police went through the bags and purses continued on page 39

The other day Mike, the “wine guy” from Nantucket Vineyards, got me thinking. He popped by with a selection of wines. It’s been years since I’ve tasted them. Not knowing what to expect or not expecting much, he poured me a glass. His hand covered the label – “I have a surprise wine for you to try,” he said. Before he came to see me that afternoon I told him I would be happy to try the wines under one condition—no fruit wines. I took my first sip of his “mysterious” pour. The wine danced on my tongue with a hint of effervescence. The perfect amount of fruit gave way to a tart, dry finish. It was delicious. I looked up from my glass of almost rosé-like wine and he could tell that I liked it. He removed his hand from the front of the bottle and the first word that jumped from the label was…Cranberry. Yes, a fruit wine, sort of. The Nantucket Vineyards Cranberry is made with a base of Pinot Gris grapes from Washington State. The grape bunches arrive on island whole cluster and the winemaking process begins. After fermentation is underway, 1,000 pounds of local, hand-harvested Nantucket cranberries are added to the mix. And the result is a tasty one. Its fun, bright pink label and crown cap closure make it a great beach beverage or the perfect porch pour for the summer. Preconceived notions of wine made on Nantucket? Toss them overboard. They deserve a second sip. Mike’s tasting got me thinking about other islands that produce wine. One of my favorite island winemaking destinations is Sicily. Formerly known for unmemorable, over-produced, cheap wines, Sicily has taken center stage as a winemaking region to watch. The reds now lean to the lighter side while the whites have become fresh and energetic, thanks to the Carricante grape. Some of the most notable producers include Planeta, Tenuta della Terre Nere, and Arianna Occhipinti, but it’s Azienda Agricola COS who we can thank for the Sicilian wine renaissance. In 1980 while waiting for their next university term to begin, three friends, Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano (COS), came up with a plan to pass their summer vacation. Little did they know that their “summer project” would change the face of the Sicilian wine industry. Cilia’s father owned a small vineyard and a deserted cellar. While most young people were leaving the rural winemaking areas of Italy for work in factories, the trio set out to resurrect the local wine of Vittoria, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, which is made from two indigenous grape varieties, Nero d’Avola and Frappato. At that time there was only one other producer making the wine. After their first vintage people started to take note and encouraged them to continue with the project while they finished university. By the middle of 90’s there were 40 producers making Cerasuolo di Vittoria. The growth and success of the region are due in part to the entrepreneurial efforts of the three friends who founded COS. Though they make several wines now, my go-to is still the wine that changed everything. The 2011 COS Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG is a blend of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato. It’s got vibrant red fruit aromatics that spill from the continued on page 20

FINE FEATHERED FRIENDS: PART 2
Nature’s Street Cleaners by Dr. Sarah Oktay, Director, University of Massachusetts Nantucket Field Station This week’s topic came up while talking with friends about trends on island that might be fun to write about. They mentioned that they remember when no Turkey Vultures were present on island and how prolific they are now. Doesn’t everyone have carrion eater conversations during dinner? On Nantucket that may be more common, our food is so good even talk of road kill doesn’t deter us from eating. And my friends were right, Turkey Vultures on Nantucket are a relatively recent immigrant, lured north by warming weather and into urban and semi-urban areas with the growth of streets and highways. Along with crows, they are frequently encountered on our roads cleaning up road kill created when wildlife travel meets car travel. Both deserve their own column because they are fascinating birds, so let’s learn more about Turkey Vultures, “Turkey Buzzards” or TVs as they are often called for shorthand. I’ll also capitalize Turkey Vulture after reading a few articles which insist that is the way to do it properly. On May 25th, the Sunday morning bird walk (which resume in September) found 12 Turkey Vultures just in the Crooked Road and Cliff Road area. On any given day on Nantucket there are likely several dozen flying around. The Turkey Vulture’s Latin name, Cathartes aura, comes from the Greek "katharsis" meaning to purify or to cleanse and “aura” Latinized from the Native Mexican word for the bird, “auroura.” Turkey Vultures are New World Vultures, found in the Americas. Though both are similar in appearance and have similar ecological roles, the New World and Old World Vultures evolved from different ancestors in different parts of the world. Just how different the two are is currently under debate, with some earlier authorities suggesting that the New World vultures are more closely related to storks. Most authorities now place Turkey Vultures in their own order, Cathartiformes although others, especially in South America, prefer placing them in the Order Incertae sedis, or Falconiformes. Riveting. Keep reading, TVs do many cool things. “Turkey vultures, so named for their featherless headed resemblance to
Wild Turkeys and their habit of sitting on the ground to eat, are migratory in nature but winter as far north as Connecticut. They appear in Massachusetts in late February and slowly make their way north for a summer spent wavering over farm fields and eating carrion.” Both male and female TVs are very similar in appearance, with the only differences being that the female is slightly larger and the males have a wattled (fleshly and wrinkly) look. Their bodies are very dark brown, nearly black and they have the characteristic bald, pink heads with a sharp, whitish, hooktipped bill. Their legs and feet are reddish pink (often stained white, we’ll learn why soon!) and their wings are two-toned from below with dark inner wings and paler almost silvery outer wings. The juvenile have grayish heads and feet. They weigh in average about 64 ounces (almost 4 pounds or roughly 2 kilograms) and vary in length (height) from 24-32 inches with a total wingspan of 63-71 inches. Turkey Vulture’s have a semicircular pattern of whitish to greenish papillae or warts around their eyes that varies from one individual to another. These papillae may be caused by bacterial infections resulting from constant exposure to rotting meat. This gives them a “Mr. Burns” look if you remember your Simpson’s characters. The nasal septum, a thin partition between the two nostrils, has a hole in it (this is true of all New World vultures), so an observer can look right through a Turkey Vulture’s nostrils. That means, as www.wingmasters.net puts it, that “a Turkey Vulture, should it be so inclined, can wear a nose ring.” The Turkey Vulture’s return to New England is a sure sign that things will get warmer. Like Storks, the Turkey Vulture often defecates on its own legs, using the evaporation of the water in the feces and/or urine to cool itself, a process known as urohidrosis (sounds lovely). Pooping on itself cools the blood vessels in the unfeathered tarsi and feet, and causes white uric acid to continued on page 11

Bartlett’s Farm is widely known for their freshly harvested produce, quality groceries, tasty take-out, and a garden center chock full of colorful flowers and plants for both indoors and out. My window boxes are full of bright and cheery flowers and fragrant herbs from the farm. Bartlett’s is also a place I go when I am looking for that hard-to-find ingredient for a recipe or need to pull together an evening of entertaining friends in a hurry. Their New England cheese selection is outstanding for when I need a taste of Vermont, and their freshly prepared housemade spreads, dips, salads, and desserts are delicious. Pair a couple of those with a bottle of wine from their cooler and you’re all set for a picnic on the beach or a cozy night at home. Apart from the plants and food they are known for, did you know that Bartlett’s Farm also carries gifts, home accessories, and items for stylish and easy island entertaining? This is an area of the store I haven’t explored much on my visits to the farm, so I thought I’d look into it further. Gift manager Kate O’Brien does a fantastic job of selecting items to sell in the store, she has a good eye and understanding of what islanders are looking for. There is an extensive variety of serving bowls, baskets, platters, plates, dishtowels, glassware, and kitchen tools on display. Their nautical cutting boards in the shape of the island, whales, and ship wheels would make an ideal addition to any Nantucket table spread. Bartlett’s Farm is also a great place to put together a stylish hostess gift-they have everything you need, right down to the cards and gift wrap. In addition, they carry beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, beach bags, soft-sided coolers, waterproof covers for your iphone or ipad, radios, and a huge selection of toys to make for the perfect day at the beach. Grab a couple of sandwiches from the deli case, and you’re all set! The next time you take a trip out to Bartlett’s Farm, remember they are more than just groceries! The farm is open daily at 33 Bartlett Farm Road from 8am-6pm and their sister store carrying produce and their prepared food is located on Old South Wharf and open daily from 10am-6pm.

streak the legs. The Turkey Vulture has few natural predators. Adult, immature and fledging vultures may fall prey to Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles and Great Horned Owls, while eggs and nestlings may be preyed on by mammals such as raccoons, opossum and foxes (which are not found on Nantucket). Its primary form of defense is regurgitating semi-digested meat, which deters most creatures intent on raiding a vulture nest. Even fledglings can projectile vomit in order to protect themselves. The Turkey Vulture lives up to 16 years in the wild and 30+ years in captivity. Often people will mistake a Turkey Vulture for a hawk. Many raptors exhibit the same kind of thermal flying or circling behavior, but unlike an Eagle or Red-Tail Hawk, TVs have a wobbly look as they circle. They can also be identified by the V pattern they make while flying and by the fact that their feather tips are spread out almost like fingers. In flight, the outermost six primary feathers are splayed open like the curved fingers of a hand to give the bird more lift. Because these primary feathers can be moved individually, this species has superb flight control. A turkey vulture can stay aloft at very slow speeds without stalling and falling. They prefer to ride thermals and are less likely to be seen on windless days. They are also bigger than other raptors except for Eagles and Condors. Designed to eat carrion (dead things) TVs have an acute sense of smell and can reportedly smell day old meat from several miles away. A lot of research has been done to evaluate the acuity of a Vulture’s sense of smell . John James Audubon himself had difficulty verifying their abilities because he used carrion that was too far gone to interest a Turkey Vulture. Ecologist David Houston, working in the tropics, hid chicken carcasses in varying stages of decay. His research showed that turkey vultures cannot detect freshly-killed carcasses by smell. By the second or third day, as the meat begins to rot, the birds can, and do, find their way to the carcasses. However, by the fourth day, when the chickens were in an advanced state of decay and therefore very smelly, turkey vultures rarely showed any interest. Houston continued on page 21

Lighting Designer Danny Harrison brought his two decades of theatre lighting experience to TWN for the first time. He says, “The play is set in the 1920s, so I was trying to envision how everything would look with bulbs that had big, fat filaments. No LED stuff. I wanted that 1920s hard amber look. In the second act, I went for warm incandescence and saturated colors that would really play up how fabulous they’re all being.” When the guests first verbalize the truth about the ignorant Blisses, the stage’s illumination Mother and daughter Judith and Sorel Bliss (played by Susan grows brighter and whiter. glass and is soft, fruity and medium-bodied on the palate. I love this wine with a slight chill; so don’t be afraid to put it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before serving. It makes a great summer red! I don’t think I can write an article about island wines and not include the drinkable gifts Greece gives us. One of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, there is evidence of Greek wine dating back 6,500 years. A favorite of mine is the 2012 Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko. Hailing from the island of Santorini, the Assyrtiko grape is an indigenous variety and has been grown since ancient times. Coming from vines that are over 50 years old, it has citrus aromatics and loads of mineral flavors that dominate the palate. This white would befriend almost anything from the sea, making it a natural match with local Nantucket fish. The jet set who line the beaches of Sardinia are no stranger to the Vermentino grape. Gaining the nickname of “insula vini” (wine island) in the 16th century, Sardinia has the quintessential Mediterranean environment. Soaked with warm temperatures, a hilly landscape, and maritime breezes, it’s the perfect setting to grow grapes. I’ve had the good fortune to taste various expressions of the Vermentino grape, but there is always one that I come back to. It is not the most expensive one, it’s probably not the most complex one, but it’s the one that I want to drink after a day at the beach, sand still between my toes, on a late sunny summer afternoon. The 2012 Sella & Mosca ‘La Cala’ Vermentino is the hip sip at chic resorts that pepper Sardinia’s beaches. Named for a small cove covered by violet-colored thistles on the edge of the Sella & Mosca estate, this 100% Vermentino (also known as Rolle in other parts of the world) will quench any summertime thirst. Light, refreshing, and dry it has a hint of salinity due to the vineyard’s close proximity to the sea. Easy drinking this is an ideal wine to kick off any cocktail party, but once again, it goes hand in hand with seafood and other treats from the raw bar. So when you’re on island time this summer, grab a glass of island wine, whether it is from near or far.

concluded that by that point there would be such a high level of microtoxins present in the putrescent meat that it would be dangerous to eat even for a vulture. This is not to say that Turkey Vultures hunt exclusively by smell. They use an efficient combination of sight and smell. This species typically soars about 200 feet in the air or even lower, cruising just above the treetops. At that height the birds can smell a carcass, but not higher. On these searching flights the vultures are also using their very sharp eyesight to spot food. Once it is sighted, another vulture strategy comes into play. These birds watch each other as they look for food. When food is sighted, the finder wins a prize (just kidding, well they do get to eat) then circles above it for some time, alerting the other vultures in the vicinity to the presence of a meal. When one bird drops down, they all drop. Last one to the carcass is a rotten egg, or at least smells like one. Fortunately, the current population of Turkey Vultures which has protected status as a migratory bird now exceeds five million birds. Most populations of this adaptable species appear to be thriving. The vulture’s beneficial role as a scavenger is recognized, and the species is not persecuted. Unfortunately, this was not always the case. In the past, Turkey Vultures were shot because ranchers and farmers mistakenly believed that they spread diseases and contaminated watering holes for livestock, although there is no evidence to substantiate this claim. Last but not least there are many legends and myths and stories associated with Turkey Vultures. For instance, I found this story: “In American Indian mythology, it was believed that the sun was originally much closer to the earth and was in danger of burning it up. First the fox unsuccessfully tried to pull the sun away in its mouth, accounting for the black inside of its mouth. Next the opossum unsuccessfully tried to pull the sun away with its tail, accounting for the hairless tail. Finally a beautiful fully feathered vulture successfully pushed the sun away from the earth with its head, thus becoming bald for eternity.” Not only do they keep our roads clean, but they also managed to save the world.

Featured Restaurant: The Ships Inn
A Feast for the Eyes & the Appetite Tucked underneath one of Nantucket’s whaling captain’s homes turned inn, you’ll find a restaurant called The Ships Inn that is the perfect place to make a wonderful Nantucket memory. There’s a romance about the dining room and lounge here. The inn is steeped in Nantucket history, but with whitewashed walls, colorful accents, and fresh flowers, there’s nothing “old” about this restaurant. The dining room is on a lower level, but it’s ringed with windows so the feel is airy and bright. All servers at The Ships Inn are professional and very well trained. Every one knows the menu top to bottom and can describe even the accompaniments to a T. They are attentive but never hover. We were served by Emily, who, with two years at Ships Inn is one of the newer staff members. Manager Bob Moulder (who himself has been with the inn and restaurant for several decades) told us that much of the staff has stayed with Ships Inn for 15 years and longer. This consistency in staff gives a comforting sense of familiarity: servers know many of the regulars and greet them warmly by name. We love this about Ships Inn: every spring when they reopen after a long cold winter, it’s like coming home. Chef Mark Gottwald, who with his wife Ellie also owns The Ships Inn, is everpresent. As with the servers, much of his kitchen staff has stayed with him for years. They know his techniques and his high standards, and the food served here is dependably delicious. Chef Gottwald’s great attention to detail means that every dish brought to every table is a work of art. The colors, shapes, and textures make a stunning presentation — deserving of more than just a quick glance before you dig in. And we’re happy to report that everything tastes as beautiful as it looks! The food is perfectly seasoned, flavors are pure and fresh, and if there is a sauce or dressing, then it’s just enough to heighten the flavors, never so much that it masks them. The menu is upscale but accessible. Everything served at The Ships Inn is prepared in-house by Chef Gottwald and his kitchen crew, from the trio of Grilled Chatham Sea Scallops fresh breads served in a lightship basket at the beginning of a meal to the legendary souffles that often end a meal here. All dishes are a la minute rather than prepped in advance and held, even the sauces, and this makes all the difference! You won’t see the souffle on the dessert menu because it must be ordered when you order your meal so that it is ready when you are. Order it, no matter what flavor is offered, and pace yourself because the portions here are generous. There’s plenty on each plate, and you’ll want to finish every morsel. We were happy to see at our recent dinner that Chef Gottwald’s elegant Grilled Chatham Sea Scallops are back on the early season menu. The pair of skillfully seared scallops are placed in a large white sea scallop shell, drizzled with a rich black truffle hollandaise, and adorned with a single vibrantly colored

blossom. The thick scallops have a fresh, delicate flavor, and grilling brings out their sweetness. Another of our favorites at The Ships Inn is Chef Gottwald’s Nantucket Seafood Chowder. If you’re expecting the thick and floury concoction served around town, you’ll be disappointed. This chowder is light with no loss of flavor—a fish stock kissed with cream and whispers of fennel and pernod, and full of chunks of salmon, halibut, fluke, and potato. Chef Gottwald’s refreshing Radicchio & Endive Salad is the ideal start to a summer meal. Fresh and crisp, the leaves are tossed in a tangy clear french dressJumbo Blue Crab & Grits Imperial ing, with a creaminess from thick slices of avocado and big crumbles of blue cheese overtop the salad. New to the menu is a Jumbo Blue Crab & Grits Imperial. The deep layer creamy grits don’t distract from the thick topping of crabmeat, lightly dusted with seasoned crumbs and then shown the broiler. The grits are set in a shallow pool of oyster mushroom jus with a tinge of garlic, just enough to dip each spoonful. We recommend without hesitation another new appetizer: the chef’s Lobster Quesadilla. This dish has ruined us completely: we will never again be satisfied with the thin, cheesebetween-tortillas that so often get served as a quesadillas. This version has hunks of lobster meat, sweet kernels of corn, crisp bits of red pepper and onion and tomato, and creamy black beans between two corn tortillas, browned on the grill. Dollops of guacamole cream dot the plate for a little something Lobster Quesadilla extra.

Veal Scallopini Citron
Even with just a dozen selections, there’s an entree on The Ships Inn dinner menu that will please every appetite: duck, chicken, veal, a variety of beef, salmon, fluke, halibut, shad roe, and a vegetarian risotto. Plus there is always an evening special or two. As with the appetizers, every detail of every entree is exact and delicious—every dish is a feast for the eyes as well as the appetite. We’d heard others rave about the steaks served here, so we tried the Dry Aged Sirloin “Steak au Poivre.” Everything we heard is true! This steak is better than many restaurants we’ve been to who bill themselves as “steakhouses.” The sirloin is very thick (we forgot our ruler, but we’d guess an inch-and-ahalf), cooked exactly to temperature (medium-rare), and butter tender. It’s drenched with a dark and deeply flavorful peppercorn sauce that has a peppery bite without being too hot. Snuggled alongside the steak is a potato gratin, two cooked carrots, and a bundle of haricot vert tied with a chive. The Veal Scallopini Citron also deserves high praise. This is the dish for something hearty but a bit lighter than steak. The veal, pounded thin, is very tender and served in a savory-sweet sauce studded with capers. A tangle of homemade spinach and egg fettucine is perfect for mopping up Grilled Fluke every drop of the sauce. Two quenelles—one of broccoli and one of carrot—are served alongside providing bright color and garden fresh flavor. For those who prefer fish to meat, the Grilled Fluke is a delicious and hearty choice. It’s thick and moist and meaty, and we love how the slight smokiness from the grill emphasizes its ocean-fresh flavor. The customized accompaniments on this entree are a lemon-thyme beurre blanc, tomato broiled with

olive oil and garlic, and creamed spinach. We especially like the twice baked potato with a tasty crusted top and creamy middle. One in our party rolled his eyes when we ordered the Wild King Salmon, but he was the one who finished every last bite of this entree. A liberal dusting of parsley, chive, and thyme, transforms the salmon into a dish that will please the most dedicated carnivore. A Dry Aged Sirloin “Steak au Poivre” cool corn and tomato salad is served overtop and a delicately flavored sweet corn coulis forms a pool around the fish. Sauteed oyster mushrooms are served on a potato and garlic crostini, flanked by two halves of a “spring roll” made from savoy cabbage filled with shiitakes, carrot, shallot, and shredded cabbage. A fun and delicious way to eat your vegetables. Ordering dessert at the beginning of your meal means the anticipation builds the entire evening. It’s impressive that no matter whether we’ve ordered the chocolate souffle or one that is raspberry or Grand Marnier, or butterscotch, it is always even better than we thought it would be. Make sure at least one in your party orders the Souffle. We also sampled the Chocolate Fondue for Two, which comes with strawberries, granny smith apples, bananas, and coconut biscotti for dipping. The chocolate is so delicious we had to stop one in our party from breaking the fondue rules by simply spooning it up. Creme Brulée is a test of a good kitchen, and The Ships Inn crew earns a douChocolate Fondue for Two ble A+ with theirs. It’s seductively good: the custard is satiny smooth, cool, and creamy, and the sugar crust melted to a clear, caramelized top that shatters with a tap. Make a Nantucket memory to savor for life: enjoy dinner at The Ships Inn.

When her pieces started appearing on Hollywood’s hottest stylistas, including Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Eva Longoria, the business quickly grew. Jessica opened her own boutique: Jessica Hicks Nantucket, and is now in a new location at 2 Union Street, just steps off of Main Street. Here, local devotees can snap up their favorite pieces, and see the line the way that Hicks envisioned it: all in one place. Jessica hand makes each piece in her studio. She believes that when you buy something from a designer it should actually be made by the designer.

Cynics of Spring from page 5
at the door. The dance floor was cleaned of vomit twice. The bathrooms were unusable stages for another sort of performance art. After my date and I danced one more time to R.E.O Speedwagon, we decamped to Kowloon for chicken fingers, butterfly shrimp, and regret. I dropped her off at midnight. My generation has been improving the world ever since. This rising generation, this earnest crowd in prom dresses and graduation gowns, may be the best the country has ever seen. According to the C.D.C., they smoke less, drink less, and are less violent than any generation that has come before them. They are more tolerant, more engaged, and more academic. And they are more diverse; only sixty percent of the student body is white. Cynical me, standing at the door under the lilacs, needs to get out of the way and let them clean up. My fellow graduates and I have left them quite a mess. We weigh them down with a student loans that could buy a house. The oceans have warmed and brought more erosion to the beaches of Nantucket. We have sold off the land we have given so that the Hedge Fund Glitterati can sail and play golf unmolested. Instead of hiring our kids, we collect our workers at the high speed ferry in the morning, then drop them off at night. Were I young and graduating, I would run off to Township 136 in the woods of Maine and duct tape my phone to a moose. But they won’t. This is the generation that builds orphanages in Hondouras, fund raises for water pumps in Africa, and shows up with trash bags and their sleeves rolled up. Cynicism seals you into a little hole in the ground. You shrug, draw the curtains, and give up. You can share a joke and a knowing wink, but the world moves on without you. To be a cynic is to give up your shovel and to stand by the side of the road. You stand aside and let others take the dance floor and the stage. In this sudden spring, this generation burst forth blooming into this world and onto this island. At Senior Ball, they slip away from their parents and take the floor. Dressed in matching colors, dancing to music we can barely understand, and laughing, they leave us. It will be their stage, it will be their club, it will be their island soon enough.
