Dear Readers, It’s been a while since I wrote, and since that time… Things have been changing. Not even subtle. It feels more like with a BOOM – life as we used to know it came back to us. And not a moment too soon! One of the major ways I can tell this is in my event calendar and people are walking into our office. See, they aren’t afraid anymore to walk down the street and smile as they pass someone, or to just walk in someone’s home or office and say hello. Or bring a pie, or cupcakes, or some other tasty treat. Yep, that’s been a lovely by-product of back to life – people have been bringing us a lot of baked goods recently. I take that not so much as they think we deserve them – but that they are finally able to do something they love again – bake, gift, pay a visit – whatever it may be, and it feels GREAT! Going to events feels great too. Being around people and socializing, networking, mingling – whatever you want to call it – gathering in one place with a bunch of people, which of course has been foreboden in the last year – is truly refreshing. I’m a people person. I get my energy off of interaction with others – just a simple conversation, something completely benign, unplanned, and without merit, can fill me
with such joy in a day. I had forgotten that feeling for a while, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience it again. As I sat at the Dunking Booth that YOUR Williamson sponsored at Main Street Festival recently – all I could think of was: COMMUNITY – that sense of being and belonging. COMMUNITY. We have it here in spades, and it is one of the candles that was snuffed out for so long during the pandemic, and the community of our town, county, neighborhoods, schools, churches and all manner of groups and gatherings, is the lifeblood to me and so many, I am sure. So it feels good to have that sense of community burgeoning back; children getting ready to return to a school year that is – GOD WILLING – NORMAL! And everything else we have to look forward in a return to living – to life. Speaking of that Dunking Booth – it goes without saying the stars of that show were our fabulous volunteer dunkees: Jason Collins, Woody Woodruff, Kevin Townsel, Glenn Johnson, Matt Largen, Bruno Pirecki, Jason Gregg, Patrick Baggett, Clay Perry, Carmine Grassi, Justin Martin, Matt Daniel, Frank Miller, Brian Beathard, Scott Shake, Mary Hannah McHaffie, Travis Anderson and Derby Jones all members of our community, all ready to give of their time to raise money for the Heritage

Photography by Mackenzie Smith After a year without horses and hats, the 80th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase successfully returned to Percy Warner Park as Nashville’s rite of spring. Although the event was delayed until June 26th, eager crowds flocked to the races. The event benefits the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital and surpassed organizers’ goals. Several new contests and fun outdoor activities took place, including the Taverns on the Turf, the Action 24/7 “Free to Play” contest and Diamond Cellar’s Hermes Lounge. Your Williamson’s 4th Annual Tailgating Contest awarded best overall winner a Topside tailgating spot for Iroquois Steeplechase 2022! There are plenty of things in life we can’t fix or repair – how about some things we can perhaps make better in our health and daily life. Here are just a few ways that you can enhance or repair your dental health – for a better and healthier mouth and smile! WHITEN THOSE TEETH! Some of the most common things that stain teeth are things we can limit or cut out altogether; such as coffee, tea, sodas, wine, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, and acidic foods like tomato sauces and some citrus fruits. You don’t need to totally give them up but think of adding super foods that help to whiten along with your diet. Strawberries, oranges, apples, and carrots all increase saliva and help rinse away residue. Calcium-rich foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt help to strengthen enamel making teeth stay young looking longer. And of course, any tobacco use will definitely stain teeth and can cause a yucky colored film of bacteria to grow on your tongue. IS FLUORIDE GOOD FOR ME? Yes! It’s a naturally occurring element found in soil, plants, water, and foods. Many kinds of toothpaste and mouthwashes include it to help prevent decay in teeth and to strengthen the enamel. About 99% of it is stored in the bones and teeth and helps to make them stronger. In essence, adding fluoride via toothpaste, water, and dental care products can decrease demineralization or breakdown of teeth, enhance the remineralization or repair of teeth, and reduce acids and bacterial growth.

ELIMINATE WORST DRINKS The worst drink winner is…. sparkling water. I know I’m getting some ugly looks at the comment. It’s happy and water, so why wouldn’t it be good? The answer is: It functions like battery acid in the mouth and gut. It is made using carbonated water – basically acid. Most of us have consumed have citric acid flavorings (such as lemon/lime) which actually eats holes in the beautiful enamel of teeth and works to start the entry for cavities between teeth. Add that citric acid to the carbonation acid and voila - in less than six months of consistent use we can see damage on X-rays. ADD BAKING SODA TO YOUR HOME CARE My favorite toothpaste is Peroxicare. It’s a toothpaste including both baking soda and peroxide. The baking soda makes your mouth less acidic helping to prevent decay and etching of enamel and is considered to be antiseptic. Peroxide is an effective tooth whitener and helps to heal gingival tissues. Other pastes I like to recommend include: Sensodyne for generally sensitive teeth, CloSYS that is an overall great one for sensitivity free of alcohol/dyes that is pH balanced, and Parodontax for periodontal disease by targeting bacteria at the gumline and helping to keep a tight seal between tissue and tooth to keep germs at bay. Of course, any paste that 18 AUGUST 2021

gets you brushing is a Winner. However, a toothpaste that advertises to whiten may actually be hard on tissue and not much better at tooth shade change. STAY HYDRATED Water, especially filtered tap water is super important for overall body health. The mouth is the window to the body and to keep it in tip-top shape, water is key. Bottled waters can be all over the board, some acidic and some not. Try to focus on ones that are neutral, but anyway you can keep the water intake up is helpful. KEEP HEALTHY CLEANING & EXAMS ON SCHEDULE It’s always nice to have that “Happy Visit” to the dentist. We love to see those too! But, staying away because you feel good or have no tooth or gum issues, means that the tooth concerns become big before we get to see you. Dentists are also able to detect signs of osteoporosis, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes and respiratory diseases. To keep up that top notch care, make sure you are seeing the dentist at least two times a year if recommended if not sooner if you have bone loss or gum disease and even keep an active look out for bone loss that can occur in the whole body. Good oral health care does more than prevent tooth decay and gum disease, it helps you keep your whole body healthy.
AVOID BAD BREATH Keep your mouth clean and hydrated. Dry tissue can be caused by medications, use of medical masks, aging, allergies, cancer treatment, other health conditions(stroke, diabetes, allergies, infections, nerve damage, tobacco/caffeine use, GERD, autoimmune concerns, mouth breathing and lacking homecare. So, to limit the leftover bad breath, be sure to drinks lots of fluids, especially water, limit intake of tobacco/ caffeine, chew sugar free gum, and be conscience of your homecare. You can also add a room humidifier to heated or dry rooms, using OTC saliva substitutes, limit OTC antihistamines, and even add mouth rinses that are alcohol free because they are less drying. Home care needs to include thorough brushing of all tooth surfaces at least two times daily and flossing or interdental cleaning using floss or interdental brushes. Mouth rinses can be a plus for reducing breath concerns. My favorites are Peroxyl, BreathRX, Peridex or Chlorhexidine (watch out for some staining for continuous use), and Listerine if alcohol free.

Ok, here’s the thing. Everyone has their own opinion on the whole organic food debate. Some think it’s a sham for food companies to get more money; others find it essential for everything in their kitchen to be organic. So I can’t clear up any misconceptions or doubts you may have about the system. I’m so far from an agricultural expert, but I may help motivate and guide you in your organic journey. Here are a few facts about organic produce:
The “USDA Certified Organic” label is mandated, unlike many of our food labels. If it has that seal, it has grown ingredients according to the standard set in place. Such as soil quality, pesticide use, additives, and animal raising practices. *
Humans weren’t meant to ingest toxic pesticides. Yes, maybe we shall evolve into
chemical-dissolving machines, but such is not the case currently. The problem is, many of our crops are laden with pesticides, which are absorbed through the skin of the fruit or veggie. So, when we’re washing our apples to “clean them,” there goes Round-Up® into our systems.
Yes, wind can carry pesticides from one farm to another. So, if there is an organic
crop near a non-organic crop, those foods could become compromised.
Organic farms often do still use pesticides
to protect their crops from natural predators. The difference is organic farmers are required to “use biological or botanical pesticides such as neem- and citrus-based materials, and synthetic materials included on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances.” *** These laws do vary from state to state.

Notice a trend here? The majority of them have soft skin, perfect for nibbling and perfect for absorbing those pesticides. If you can only buy certain produce organic or local, start with these.
Modified Organic. GMO foods are a whole topic in and of themselves, but at this point, I steer clear of them. Now that we’ve cleared up a few things, back to the show. Every year, the Environmental Working Group lists the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean 15”. The Dirty Dozen is a list of the produce with the most pesticides, and the Clean 15 have the least amounts of pesticides. These lists are extremely helpful for those of us who want to eat as clean as possible but can’t afford to buy everything organic.

I buy all of these organic. I can make this sacrifice financially because it gives me peace of mind, especially since half of these things are going into the kids more than myself. illiamson Medical Center (WMC) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has been permanently authorized by the Tennessee Department of Health EMS Board to carry and administer pre-hospital blood products. WMC EMS is one of six systems across the country and the first and only 911 ground EMS provider in Tennessee authorized to carry and administer pre-hospital blood products. The permanent authorization follows the completion of a successful two-year blood products administration trial. “This program is representative of Williamson Medical Center’s commitment to innovative investments supporting best-in-class quality care for the community we serve,” said Phil Mazzuca, Williamson Medical Center CEO. “We are proud of our exceptional EMS team their work to continually set the bar for emergency care in Tennessee.”
BLOOD PROGRAM
The operation of the program requires a stand-alone emergency vehicle equipped with a military-rated blood storage cooler to support emergency responders treating patients in urgent need of blood. A detailed quality control system including daily protocols ensures blood is stored properly and utilized before it expires. The WMC EMS team participated in training for the program with three levels of licensure completed for advanced EMTs, paramedics and critical care paramedics who are approved to safely administer blood and are re-credentialed every six months. In addition, the WMC EMS team conducted outreach education about the program for the countywide emergency system to drive awareness of the program and availability of blood for critical need.

A Dietitian's Guide to a HEALTHY
W
hen setting out on a new diet regimen, many people focus on what it will mean for them on the scale. However, what you eat can have a bigger impact on more than just your waistline. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease in the United States is the leading cause of death for both men and women. A balanced diet can help prevent and reverse the effects of the disease. Registered Dietitian, Lisa Mathews, M.S. R.D., L.D.N., C.D.E., with Williamson Medical Center, shares her expert knowledge on the leading causes of heart disease, foods to avoid and the best diets for a heart-healthy life. According to Mathews, there are two key areas to watch when focusing on your heart health. “I tell my patients that to keep their heart in check they want to make sure they are watching their sodium and their saturated fat intake,” said Mathews. “A diet rich in saturated fat and high in sodium can cause elevated blood pressure as well as high cholesterol, both of which can lead to the risk of developing heart disease.”
If you’re concerned about your heart health or if heart disease runs in your family, Mathews says one of the most important things you can do is make your diet a priority by watching what you eat. “You want to make sure you’re eating foods as close to nature as possible—that means limiting processed and prepackaged foods,” she said. “You also want to avoid the consumption of trans fats. If you see the word ‘hydrogenated’ on the ingredient label, that means hydrogen was added to a liquid oil to make it solid. Consuming these fats increases your LDL (bad) cholesterol, decreases your HDL (good) cholesterol, and increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke.” Mathews goes on to share that people should be wary of items that tout their products as ‘heart healthy’ and reminds you to read the label. “To be able to make certain claims, food companies have to follow established guidelines to prevent false advertising. However, even if the label says ‘healthy’ or ‘high fiber,’ it still doesn’t mean that it’s the best for you,” she explained.

“Take chips, for example,” she said. “The bag might say that it’s made with flax seeds or it is multi-grain, but when you read the label on the back, it’s the exact same nutritional value as a regular chip. You have to be a savvy shopper, and that means being aware that a whole-grain label doesn’t always equate to healthy.” Knowing what to avoid is half the challenge though, you also need to know what foods will help you reach your heart-healthy goals. “The best types of heart-healthy diets are going to consist of a variety of fruits and vegetables loaded with antioxidants, lean meats and fish, healthy fats, and whole grains,” she said. But while we often have that glass of wine at dinner, a drink for happy hour or a little bourbon on the rocks watching the sunset, alcohol, like many items we put in our body, can negatively affect our overall health and wellness. Like everything else in life: Moderation is the key. So, where does alcohol fit on our road to health and wellness? To help us understand, we have developed the list below to help us in what role our consumption of alcohol plays in our health and wellness. But, unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good. THE GOOD There are a few studies done to examine the role of alcohol in health and wellness. For instance, a 2020 study in the journal JAMA Network Open found that middle-aged and older adults who consumed low to moderate amounts of alcohol had better cognitive function than those who never drank. Another study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology involved 333,247 people and found that light-moderate drinkers were twenty-six and twenty-nine percent less likely to be compared with lifetime abstainers who die of heart disease, respectively. Moderate alcohol consumption may: • Raise “good” HDL cholesterol in your bloodstream. • Decrease blood pressure, a significant risk factor for heart disease. • Lower your blood concentration of fibrinogen, a substance that contributes to blood clots. • Cut the risk of diabetes, another major risk factor for heart disease. • Reduce stress and anxiety temporarily.

The studies mentioned above have not been replicated; therefore, there’s not much information out there to support alcohol consumption and improved health and wellness are limited. The studies on alcohol’s effect on health, wellness and overall functioning indicate the harmful effects of ongoing consumption. Alcohol is considered a depressant drug; this means it depresses many of our bodily functions. For example, judgment, speech, motor coordination, perception is all negatively impacted when we drink too much. Health professionals have recommended that if you want to lose weight, one thing to do is to cut out alcohol consumption. This is because alcohol adds calories to a person’s daily caloric intake. In essence, drinking alcohol can lead to obesity. Alcohol is the second most calorie-rich nutrient after fat. Beer has as many calories as a sugary soft drink ounce for ounce; red wine is twice as much as beer. When taking other medications, the consumption of alcohol may interfere with the effectiveness of those medications. Some researchers believe that moderate consumption of red wine may help prevent heart disease because of the antioxidants found in red wine. However, such items like fruits and vegetables also have antioxidants and can help prevent heart disease.
Now that I have scared you from drinking alcohol, the positive is that drinking in moderation is not harmful. However, Like anything else in life, too much of a good thing is not really good for you. Our overall health and wellness have so many variables that it sometimes is a full-time job to monitor and regulate them. The one area that plays a crucial role in our health and wellness is that of genetics. This is a large topic, but one that we have no control over. But there is an alternative available if you want to consume alcoholic beverages without the alcohol. Sounds weird, but non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits are available for those who cannot have alcohol. And most recently, companies have produced low-calorie, low alcohol beverages as well. The new crave are spirit-involved spritzer and canned cocktails. The long and short of this discussion is that while a few studies show positive effects of alcoholic consumption, more studies explain the negative impact. The key here is moderation. Don’t deny yourself a shot of any expensive bourbon while watching that sunset or a glass of a 1982 French Bordeaux. Do it in moderation. That will have lasting effects on your body as well as your mind. Glasses UP!!! Photography Submitted After a year hiatus, the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Fish Fry returned for its 46th year to the shaded grounds of the church in the Grassland area of Franklin. According to event chairman Mike Loring, over 3,000 people came out for the all-you-can-eat catfish, bluegrass music and free kids’ area. The event benefits the missions of the church including Kathy’s Backpacks which will soon prepare almost 450 Williamson County backpacks filled with school supplies for area elementary, middle and high school students needing assistance. Several communities have had their history published, but there has never been a complete history of Peytonsville published.” Mr. Pratt does not consider himself to be a writer but considers himself a history lover. Peytonsville is unique to him because he says, “for seventy-seven years, I have attended the same church in Peytonsville. The people of the community were good, solid people who helped each other and sincerely cared for their neighbors. It was an ideal place to grow up.” To Paul, talent seemed to be in the water in the 13th District. Musical families flourished as talent for playing the guitar, banjo, fiddle and singing pure country passed
bbq catering at its best through bloodlines of many families in the District.” This book includes the tales of many significant people who came together to settle and create the special area of Williamson County. He explains that, “there are many stories about folks from all walks of life.” He also includes stories and history of many of the local businesses, churches, schools and cemeteries. Paul loves the entire book. However, his favorite story is about his beloved teacher Ms. Katie Lou Gatlin. According to Paul, “she influenced my life and the lives of so many others in our community. She was truly loved.” And Paul might have plans for another book but says, “it all depends on an elusive ancestor. So, maybe there will be another.” This excellent book is filled with beautiful pictures and stories about a place with history ingrained in every corner. Thanks to local favorite photographer, Debbie Smartt, who designed the book layout and helped with the historical photos, this is a true Williamson County history buff’s dream. CHARCOAL COWBOYS Ken Woods will be competing in the upcoming Great Americana BBQ Festival, taking place on August 27th and 28th at The Park at Harlinsdale Farm. His BBQ competition and catering business are called: Charcoal Cowboys. “We are a local team to Williamson County,” says Ken. “We have competed in BBQ contests all over the Southeast, from Florida to Texas. We have over fifty National BBQ awards and won the TV show BBQ Pitmaster Memphis Challenge in 2014.” The Charcoal Cowboys also represented Tennessee in the BBQ Pitmaster All-Star season and won the Rib Category at the last Great Americana BBQ Festival with a Perfect Score. “We have Kansas City BBQ society sanction events, perfect scores in Beef Brisket, Pork Shoulder and Pork Ribs - what is special about a perfect score is that six people sit at a table ALL must believe that is the best bite they have ever had.”

Since the beginning, Ken has worked with the Franklin Noon Rotary on making the Great Americana BBQ Festival a successful event for our community. “We want to make a few changes this year that would allow the public to be more interactive with tasting the BBQ,” explains Ken. “I have reached out to some of my competition friends to actually provide the public with a sample of a BBQ competition style pork rib that will raise money for our community. We have limited tickets, but this gives the public a great opportunity to try BBQ competition food - like everyone sees on the Food Network.” Ken says they will create a BBQ Alley at the festival and, with a special rib ticket, you can try some exciting twists on BBQ like BBQ Sundae, BBQ Mac Boat, Cowboy Nachos and so much more. Charcoal Cowboys Mac & Cheese
18 ounce jar Cherry Jam 18 ounce bottle commercial Hickory flavored BBQ Sauce 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/8 tsp Chipotle powder
Remove Membrane from back side (use paper towel to help grab & handle of spoon to start if needed)
16 ounces Elbow Noodles 5 cups shredded Sharp Cheddar 5 cups shredded Mexican blend Cheese 3 TBS Flour 2 tsp Kosher Salt 2 tsp Mustard 1/2 tsp Black Pepper 1/4 tsp Chipotle Powder 1 3/4 cups Heavy Cream 2 1/4 cups Half & Half 1 1/3 cup Ricotta Cheese 3 Eggs beaten 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire
Mix all ingredients in a Saucepan, Bring to low boil, simmer for a minute to blend and thicken slightly. Let cool before serving.
Rub both sides with: Pork Rub & Sweet Heat Rub Daytime Cook Time & Temp: Smoke at 275* for 2 hours Wrap in double layer of foil and add 1/2 cup of Apple Juice Put 1/4 cup Brown Sugar on foil first and put Meat side down Cook for another 1 hours until tender
Cook Noodles Combine all ingredients and mix into cooked noodles
Ready to slice and serve to order

Hogwood BBQ, Blooming Kupcakes and Franklin Wine and Spirits provided food and refreshments. In addition, Leiper’s Fork Distillery held tastings inside. Local artist, TROY, serenaded the guests with his original music and some popular covers, even giving away an album and t-shirt. Williamson County High School Girls Take The Flag Football World By Storm BY EMMA CHENNAULT The Tennessee Titans, NFL, NFL FLAG, TSSAA and Williamson County Schools make up the small army backing Tennessee’s very first girl’s flag football league. Female high school students in any of Williamson County’s nine public schools are eligible to play in an eight-game season in the Spring of 2022. Teams will play once a week for six weeks before the league championship, which is tentatively scheduled to take place at Nissan Stadium in May 2022. “We are excited about partnering with the Tennessee Titans and offering another athletic option for the young women in Williamson County Schools,” said Darrin Joines, District Athletic Director, Williamson County Schools. “We are honored to serve as the pilot district for Tennessee and look forward to making Girls Flag Football a part of our high school athletic programs during the 2021-22 school year.” TSSAA and NFL FLAG, the official flag football league of the NFL, will partner with the inaugural league in planning, training, and guiding the season. NFL FLAG aims to empower young athletes through non-contact football and unite communities throughout the country. This is the 64 AUGUST 2021

Meet Mazel Mae Templeton THE MINIATURE ZEBU... BUT DON’T TELL HER THAT! HELLO, FURRY FRIEND FANS!
Ollie Pup here, and we have a special guest this month… Meet Mazel Mae Templeton! Mazel is a Miniature Zebu, which is a modern American breed of Zebuine Miniature Cattle. Her parents, April Wideman and Carrie Drury researched the responsibilities of owning a miniature cow for quite a while before finding Mazel Mae. Owning one of these little beauties is a fifteen to twenty-year commitment, and they did not just on a whim decide to get a cow! “We have a dear friend in the Leiper’s Fork area that is leasing us acreage on his fifteenacre farm,” says Carrie. “After preparing the space for our potential new family member, our plan was to get one and our friend to get one so that they would grow up together. After searching for nearly a year, April saw a picture and fell in love; it was the cow for
her! Unfortunately, our friend has not found one that has spoken to him like Mazel did to April! We are actively searching for Mazel a playmate to join her at the farm.” Carrie says that there are many rescue groups in our area that work diligently to provide love and care to farm animals that were purchased for the cuteness factor and then abandoned or neglected when they outgrew the fun stage. “We are committed to taking care of and providing for Mazel as if she were our own child,” she says. “We did not consider the fact that she would be so small when we got her, so we had to bring her to our home (we live in the city limits of Franklin) and were recently ‘outed’ for having her in our backyard. The City paid us a visit and were very kind to hear us out and provide us with an appropriate amount of time to place her at the farm. She leaves very soon, and it will be a sad day not to have her at our house, but she is only eight minutes down the road, and we will be there all the time!” Mazel is still bottle-fed three times a day but is starting to graze a little on grass and orchard grass (hay), and she is learning to eat calf starter feed. April and Carrie say they have enjoyed every minute of having Mazel as part of their family. She adores her canine brother and sister, and they have remarkably taken her under their care and are so amazing with her. “She loves to spend time

with us on our patio, plays in the yard with the dogs, and has a new visitor coming by almost daily to meet her,” Carrie says. “She sleeps in our mudroom. If she had her way, she would wish to stay in the other parts of the house with her siblings. She follows them everywhere. She is such a sweet creature and very smart. It’s amazing to watch her develop. We are proud parents!

The mobile glassblowing experience brings the artistry and education of glass making beyond the studio walls. Experience a multitude of information surrounding the lost art of glassblowing. It is an interdisciplinary art form that embodies art, science, math, history, and teamwork. Learn the process of manipulating hot glass into various shapes and forms. Glass artist, Ryan Gothrup, has been an educator of glassblowing for over 16 years. From youth starting at the age of 10 years old to elderly and students with learning differences, he has taught glassblowing to a wide variety of people. After receiving his MFA, he spent six years teaching at the college level and for the past seven years has been using his mobile glass trailer to educate on location MONDAY - THURSDAY 6 - 11 PM FRIDAY 6 PM - Midnight SATURDAY - SUNDAY 2 - 8 PM

State of the County Luncheon

This event opened with an hour of networking followed by an address by Mayor Anderson, with an overview of how the county is performing on economic indicators such as financial health, education, public safety, transportation, job growth and employment, and capital investments. He also outlined the county’s budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Attendee’s also learned more about many departments that keep Williamson County running and the recent and future projects around the county, and how they will serve to impact our community positively.

These days there are more and more choices when it comes to banking. Choosing a bank is a personal decision that shouldn’t take lightly. Switching banks takes some time and effort, so a little preparation on the front end can ensure you find the best fit. GET TO KNOW DIFFERENT BANKS

National banks are also an option if the convenience of multiple state branch locations is appealing. Additionally, have you seen signs advertising your bank? Don’t just consider your current situation. Try to imagine the next stage of your life as well. Will you likely buy a new home in the next few years? If so, make sure your bank has a good, reputable mortgage originator on the team. Are you thinking about how to retire early? Maybe consider a bank with a knowledgeable wealth management team. Making Spelling Bee History By: Emma Chennault The Scripps National Spelling Bee was first founded in 1925 by nine newspapers with the intention to host a singular spelling bee. Within the ninety years since the Scripps National Spelling Bee establishment, they have reached eleven million students each year from all different types of backgrounds. This event is held annually in the Washington, D.C. area and caters to mostly American students in the grades below High School. Over the years, the rules of this competition have been revised and the winnings have also increased. How the Spelling Bee is broadcasted has also transitioned from radio and the occasional television coverage to being aired on ESPN every year since 1994. This allows for more children to be exposed to a different kind of sport. Zaila Avant-Garde is the winner of the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. She outspelled eleven other finalists to claim this prestigious title. Zaila is fourteen years old and is from Harvey, Louisiana. She is the first African-American, the first winner from Louisiana, and only the second Black winner in the competition’s history. Zaila has been working very hard for the past two years to reach this point and is very excited to know that her hard work has paid off. Her win is even more impressive because she has only been competing in spelling bees for two years; other contestants compete for many years to get to where she is. Zaila explained that she tries to spell thirteen thousand words a day and that it usually takes her around seven hours to do so! Zaila’s talents do not stop at spelling; she is also a basketball prodigy and has aspirations to attend Harvard University and join the WNBA.

Journey fans of all ages belted out their song favorites as Resurrection – A Journey Tribute Band, played on stage. Lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and tables of food covered the east lawn next to the house, and local vendors lined the outer fence. Proceeds benefited the Battle of Franklin Trust and their efforts to preserve local historic sites. An Equal P laying Field BRENTWOOD INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUNDS BY: EMMA CHENNAULT
Steps towards greater inclusion are happening in Brentwood. The City of Brentwood and the Brentwood Rotary Club Charitable Foundation are partnering to build two inclusive playgrounds in the city parks. The first park will be located at Granny White Park, and if they raise enough funding, a second will be built at Crockett Park. If you are unfamiliar with an inclusive playground, it is a place where all children of all abilities can play and have a similar experience. In addition, families can play together while spending quality time with ALL members of the family. The theme of this campaign is Building Inclusion and Character. Brentwood needs this type of playground because inclusive playgrounds “promote acceptance and diversity in our children while allowing all families the opportunity to enjoy time together. As a result, people with special needs who often feel ignored and excluded can feel safe and comfortable.” This project was first introduced when a mother in Brentwood, Cory Hardwick, contacted the City about creating an inclusive playground. She was looking for a place where her son, Hank, can play and feel included while doing so. Cory emailed the City, and they got back to her with multiple location options, but it became evident that there is no place like Brentwood. Since then, she has been a champion for this program and advocates for her children and many others. Leigh Williams, the fundraising committee chair, knows first-hand the importance of bringing this type of inclusion to the City
of Brentwood. Leigh’s daughter, Maddox, had down syndrome and a heart defect, but she loved everybody she came into touch with. Maddox was a student at the early childhood program at Crockett Elementary School, where she just loved to spread joy. Unfortunately, Maddox passed away in July of 2019. When people ask Leigh why this playground is so necessary, she says, “when Maddox walked onto the playground, the limitations that are put on people who have any challenge disappeared. With an inclusive playground, we have so many people who are viewed in other ways. There’s a sweet innocence about walking into a place and everyone being on the same level.” She went on to explain how children with disabilities often feel left out when going to a playground, “there was a little girl who Maddox was friends with, and she had a muscular deficiency. I was talking with her mother and told her we were working on the project. We have a little playground pals’ group for people who are advocating with us and helping us in the promotion. Layla’s mother said to me that when her two boys want to play on the playground, she always tries to find excuses because she knows that if the one swing that Layla can swing on is not available, she’ll have to watch everybody else have fun from her stroller. She was excited because her kids could finally play together.” Leigh is a part of this team because of Maddox and her legacy. Jodi Rall, the marketing committee chair, was the fundraising chair for Brentwood’s 50th Celebration Parade. Jodi and Leigh have worked together in many different capacities, but this project is very close to Jodi’s heart. She is a mother of four, and she has a child with Asperger’s Syndrome and another child with learning disabilities. Jodi described that “there are many components of this playground that are going to be for sensory issues, for children with autism –stimulated by color or touch.” Additionally, Jodi is a volunteer for Full Circle
at the Brentwood YMCA, and her son went through the program when it first started. She is “amazed by how many children this program has served.” Her part in this program is to “provide equal opportunity for families to go to a playground and play.” The Brentwood Rotary Club Charitable Foundation is spearheading this fundraising campaign. Jodi is a member of the Noon Rotary. She communicates that “Rotarians are about service above self. “Everything we do is about character. So many passionate people are working on this with us, and it’s not about Leigh or me. It’s all of us. Everyone is choosing their talents to make this happen. We want to get our why out there. Our why is to remember Maddox, to serve children like Hank, and to serve all families in Williamson County and other counties,” says Jodi. The fundraising goal for this project is two million dollars. They are on track to meet this goal, but they still need help from the community. The Granny White location is paid for, and they have a significant donor that will name the playground. The groundbreaking for the Granny White location is tentatively set for September or October of this year. Once that is finished, they will be in the planning stages for the Crockett Park location. The Rotary Club is doing this as a group with the City of Brentwood. The City came up with most of the funds for the first park at Granny White. However, with the Rotary’s fundraising initiative, the project is moving a lot faster. Crockett Park was on the docket for three to four years out, and because of what the rotary club is doing, there’s a possibility that both playgrounds will be ready for use within two years. This music festival hosted some of the best bluegrass bands on stage. Spirited dancers and great music could be seen and heard as people strolled around the Square visiting local vendors’ booths. In case you aren’t familiar with what a consignment sale is, it’s basically a way to shop the closets (and playrooms) of hundreds of other local families at one time. Families sign up to sell, gather the items their children no longer need, prepare, price and tag them, drop them off at the sale location, and have them inspected. The items then get put out on the floor in an organized fashion, and the community gets to shop… and save! Most of the sales in our area have between 200-500 families who sell with them, so there is a HUGE selection.
