Yorkshire YATTER

Lisa Byrne investigates why stars of the small and big screen are converging on our most cinematic county

Throughout my childhood I sadly only ever spotted two famous people in Yorkshire. One was Pope John Paul II, a mere speck in the distance at York Knavesmire, and the other was former Liverpool footballer, Emlyn Hughes, stepping out of a car on York’s Coney Street to o cially open a sports shop.

Once I left to work as a showbiz journalist in London, where the streets are crammed with celebrities, I certainly got my fix, and fill, of famous faces – but after years of fake air kissing and superficial cocktail conversations, I was looking forward to moving back up north to mingle with more down to earth Yorkshire folk. So, imagine my surprise when I discovered that you can’t pop out for a Bettys Rascal or wander down to York Minster for a moment of quiet reflection without tripping over a thespian, pop star or Hollywood royalty.

Being of Roman origins, Maximus Decimus, aka Gladiator star Russell Crowe, must have felt at home on a recent visit

to York. Despite being a worldwide star, Russell, just like the rest of us civilians, had to join the huge queue at Bettys in St Helen’s Square. I’ve been told Mr Crowe waited very patiently, happily chatting away to locals.

Over in the Yorkshire Moors, the bemused residents of small Yorkshire village Levisham, near Pickering, were left stunned when Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise touched down in a helicopter to record scenes for Mission Impossible. While walking her dog, B&B owner, Sarah Jones, literally bumped into the star, who hailed the Yorkshire Moors as being ‘beautiful’.

Hollywood also came to West Yorkshire when Samuel L Jackson enjoyed dinners at popular restaurant Pride and Provenance while filming Marvel’s Secret Invasion at The Piece Hall in Halifax.

But a host of home-grown talent also love visiting our county. Just before Christmas, sta at Haxby gift shop Thora & The Prince were immediately put on edge when Happy Valley’s villain Tommy Lee Royce crept in looking shifty. Thankfully, actor James Norton, who plays evil Tommy, proved to be utterly charming, telling sta he had to do a spot of last-minute Christmas shopping.

A major reason for the surge in celebrities visiting our county is due to the successful growth of Leeds-based Screen Yorkshire, which has produced a host of award-winning dramas from Victoria to Gentleman Jack

And with the array of Yorkshire’s stunning locations, ranging from country houses, fantastic coastline, rural market towns and gritty urban cities, it’s no wonder celebrities are flocking to our glorious county.

My highlights for the month of August…

“There is an agenda for every couple before you go on the show”

Wedded BLISS?

East Yorkshire’s Marilyse Corrigan on life after TV show, Married at First Sight, and her continual quest to find the one

Marriage is one of the biggest commitments a couple can ever make, but would you ever get hitched to a stranger on TV? Marilyse

Corrigan never dreamed she would. But after watching Married at First Sight Australia on E4 during lockdown she became instantly hooked. She wasn’t the only one – the show drew an average of 1.3m viewers per episode.

“I applied for MAFS during lockdown – it was after one of my friends said, ‘you have to watch MAFS Australia!’. I was on my own, so I thought I’d give it a go,” she recalls. “I remember watching the first episode and finishing the series within five days! In the last episode there was a mention of getting applications in for the UK version. The rest is history,” explains the 39-year-old mum-of-two who lives in a village close to Beverley, East Yorkshire.

“The next day one of the producers rang me to speak about appearing on the show.

I jumped onto a Zoom call later that day and it went from there. It was an intense process over the course of two months.”

Marilyse found herself under the microscope as cameras followed her every move – from marriage ceremony, honeymoon to living together. “I basically broke up with my ex before lockdown, he went o with someone else and left me heartbroken. When I applied for MAFS I thought ‘what have I got to lose?’. I always like a challenge, although I did freak out after I applied, but knew I’d regret it if I didn’t do it.”

After the success of the Australian version of the show during the pandemic, the British series followed suit with a sensationalised approach during the numerous dinner parties with other couples and revelations during ‘commitment ceremonies’, where they decide whether to continue or quit the relationship.

From the outset Marilyse embraced the experiment as she locked eyes with her future husband, Franky Spencer.

“When I first met Franky, I thought he looked so kind and reassuring – he had these lovely blue eyes and looked so

protective although he was a bit older than I had specified!" she laughs infectiously.

“The honeymoon felt like we were seriously married. We got on so well and had a fun time in the Peak District. When we moved into the apartments there was the drama from other couples, and it wasn’t hunky-dory like it was on the honeymoon. We couldn’t go anywhere; it was filmed during Covid. We got on well, but Franky likes to be outdoors, so it was hard for him – like being locked in a cage. We were based in Brighton, and it was a hard decision because I was leaving my kids, dogs, and my business. Some days I wanted to go home.”

But sadly, marriage didn’t go together like a horse and carriage with the pair splitting after the show. They remain good friends, staying in regular contact with plans to catch up this summer.

The show wasn’t always rosy and often depicted couples in a negative light. Husband Franky was often portrayed as moody and controlling – something Marilyse is keen to speak up about.

“There is an agenda for every couple before you go on the show, and I know

ABSOLUTELY magazines 21
CULTURE • INTERVIEW

that for a fact. There were points during filming where I rang up the producer and said, ‘this is unfair, what you have done to Franky’. Most of the time we got on well, so we were really shocked at the edit, and it really a ected Franky’s mental health. Other cast members like Nikita Jasmine weren’t shown in a good light. They su ered because of the way they were portrayed.”

Life after MAFS has been a whirlwind, admits the bubbly personal trainer, but she doesn’t wish she could turn back time. “I met lovely people, friends for life – cast members like Luke Dawson, Matt Jameson, and Franky. I have zero regrets,” adds Marilyse.

“I live in a small village; it hasn’t gone completely back to normal. But my work

as a PT has resumed and I’ve gained more friendships. It was a good experience. However, I refuse to watch any more MAFS, after going on the show and seeing how it pans out – intense and dramatic,” she laughs.

“Life is busy at home – I have a big house, four dogs, a cat, teenage boys, my business – it’s hectic. I have a good social life and I love going to our local town for meals. East Yorkshire is lovely for country walks, and I often head to the Beverley Arms, a great spot for lunch or dinner, or the Westwood in Beverley – a Michelin-starred restaurant. I like my fine dining, so the Wellington Inn in Lund is another favourite.

“If I go out in Leeds or Manchester, drunk people still approach me especially if I’m with other MAFS cast members. Someone once came over and said, ‘you look just like the girl from MAFS’ and she proceeded to show me a Google image on her phone, and I said, ‘Oh yeah, how funny, I do look like her’!”

Marilyse admits it’s been a tough time recently since her mum was diagnosed with cancer. As we head to print, she shares on Instagram the sad news that her mum has died, telling followers her heart

has “shattered into a million pieces”.

With support from Franky and Matt Murray, one of the husbands who appeared in a later series of Married of First Sight who she recently had a relationship with, Marilyse is keen to stay on good terms with her exes.

“Matt reached out and has been supportive. I really appreciate it. We won’t be reconnecting as a couple, he’s a lovely guy but he wasn’t for me. When it comes to ex partners life is too short to fall out.”

The quest for love and marriage hasn’t stalled for Marilyse. “I would love to get married, in recent weeks I’ve felt the need to settle down. I need someone to help me find ‘the one’! I can’t seem to find anyone on my own. All the decent ones are married or gay,” she smiles.

Looking ahead, Marilyse, who completed the London Marathon only 11 months after donating her kidney to an ex-partner, is not shy of a challenge. What’s next, I wonder?

“I really want to grow as a fitness coach – I love my job and helping women feel better about themselves. I always like to have a challenge in the bag.” She pauses before saying: “I’d love to appear on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! – but I don’t like creepycrawlies, so that could be interesting!”

Get to know… Carolyn HOBDEY

Q Was there a particular moment when you decided you wanted to run your own business?

A From a position of my own brush with burn-out due to toxic environments, I experienced how we cannot show up to be successful in any area of our life if we don’t take care of ourselves. We’re not a home ‘self’ and a work ‘self’, we’re one ‘self’ and we need to develop leaders and teams from that perspective. It’s what sparked a passion to help organisations to create conducive working environments; I realised that I wanted to do that across multiple businesses rather than from within one business as their HR lead.

Q What does Being Human At Ltd do?

A Being Human At takes a holistic approach to leader and team development. We create successful individuals and working environments by attending to their mental, emotional and physical health; we call this our Head, Heart & Health approach. Using a framework called SIMPLE, we create bespoke programmes for businesses that blend leader and team development with nature-based immersive experiences such as learning about team dynamics via sheep herding! It’s impactful and memorable for our clients.

Q When did you become known as The Midlife Mistress and do you like the moniker?

A This was a label I applied to myself! It reflects the other half of the work I do known as ‘The Broad Room’, where I work with professional women to create an emotionally literate space for them to learn how to show up as unapologetically themselves. It’s the part of my business where my books and courses reside.

CULTURE • PROFILE
FOUNDER OF BEING HUMAN AT LTD, THE MIDLIFE MISTRESS AND HARROGATE LOCAL

Q How would you sum up what we’d find in the books you have written?

A Lots of use of the word ‘Twat’! Beyond that, they are about my own experiences of navigating life, and what I discovered as I pulled myself back out of a dark place. They are full of stories and tools to support others to do the same and get the life they want, not the one they think they ‘ought’ to have.

Q Why is the menopause a key topic for you?

A My menopause began at 19. I had Premature Ovarian Insu ciency (POI) that I believe was triggered by a trauma I experienced. I didn’t learn this until I was trying to have a baby and was told at 32 that my menopause was already over. It was a huge shock and life-changing news. I realised as my career continued that, despite being a woman open to conversations about menopause, it just wasn’t being spoken about, especially at work.

Q How does the business side fit in with your personal life in Harrogate?

A The great thing about working with my business partner, Paul Porter, is that we both recognise the need for balance. We work hard, but we live what we do for work, so we flex our hours, our working days and our personal/professional lives. I’ll work from the hairdressers, for example, and Paul conducts calls whilst out in nature walking his dog, Peg.

BETTYS

Q How long have you lived there and what do you love best about it?

A This is my second stint living in Yorkshire – I loved it so much I came back, so I’ve been here for 18 years in total. I’m hoping that I will achieve honorary Yorkshire Woman status at some point!

I moved back to Harrogate in January 2015. I love the variety of the landscape and the people – they are by far the best bit.

Q It sounds like you have plenty of hobbies in your spare time…

A Yes. I box and weight-lift, so I’m at the gym five days a week. I also dance Latin & Ballroom, sing in The Stray Notes choir and am a car enthusiast.

Q Can you pick out your favourite places in the area?

A There are so many great places to choose from in Yorkshire. Some of the ones nearest where I live include Grantley Hall, without question. The setting is stunning and the refurbishment of the Hall is outstanding. From the sta to the spa to the gym and the restaurants – there’s nothing not to love about this place.

For a pub, it has to be Three’s A Crowd in Harrogate. Great venue, lively atmosphere and a fabulous Sunday roast. For a local landmark, I have to choose the iconic Bettys. I’m biased, but I think the Harrogate one is the best. Consistently good, and people far and wide across the UK have heard of it when I’m on my travels. Fountains Abbey is one of my favourite places on the planet. The history and enormity of it remind you that our lives can be so much more vast than any one of us individually. Stunning grounds and a sense of tranquility. I also have a softspot for a walk along the River Wharfe.

Q What’s next for you?

A So much! More Being Human At organisations across the UK and helping them to create communities, not just workplace cultures. Connecting with more ‘Broads’ in The Broad Room to help them live life unapologetically. And more twatting – the final book of my ‘Twats Trilogy’, Twats At Work, is a work in progress currently.

Where the bustling city of Hull meets market towns and captivating coastal areas: Absolutely explores East Yorkshire

The East Riding of Yorkshire comprises market towns, coastal areas and the city of Hull, meaning that the ceremonial county really has it all. The peaceful personality of the towns and coastal areas complement the bustling nature of Hull. With the privilege of open spaces, active wildlife and the coast, East Yorkshire acts as a perfect location for a day trip, a weekend getaway or a summer holiday. It really is the ideal place to experience the natural beauty of Yorkshire.

The dog-friendly location of East Yorkshire has many hidden gems. Flamborough Lighthouse is one of them.

Being an active lighthouse, it acts as a stopping place for coastal tra c, o ering breath-taking views over Bridlington Bay. Danes Dyke is also a beautiful location, with lovely walking routes and scenery. Alongside the hidden gems of the coastal towns of East Yorkshire, such as Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea, the area also thrives in the market town field. Some of East Yorkshire’s best markets are Dri eld Market, Skirlington Market and Cottingham Market.

The city of Hull is also full of character. Being a previous winner of the UK’s City of Culture in 2017 and the fourth largest city in the Yorkshire and Humber region, it has a lot to o er. From festivals and comedy, to aquariums and vodka schools (cheers), you will never

fall short of options for entertaining activities. As well as being home to Hull Minister, Hull Old Town, the Humber Bridge and its very own university, Hull has an impressive marina, providing a warm and peaceful ambiance, balancing out the city’s lively atmosphere.

Arts, culture and nature

When it comes to art galleries, museums and stately homes, East Yorkshire isn’t lacking. Hull, predominantly, possesses

28 ABSOLUTELY magazines
DYKE
DANES
FERENS ART GALLERY IS CELEBRATING ANCIENT EGYPT

the most favoured art galleries and museums. One of Hull’s top artistic spots is Ferens Art Gallery. The gallery hosts many exhibitions and events throughout the year that usually fall in line with the gallery’s current theme, which, at the time of writing, is Ancient Egypt.

Hull also has a range of wonderful and unique museums, the Streetlife Museum of Transport being one of the city’s most popular. This museum takes you back in time and showcases over 200 years of transport, all whilst riding on a tram through a 1940s high street. You’ll learn about all the various types of travel, ranging from bicycles, railways, carriages and cars. The museum requires no booking and admission is free, so it provides a great spontaneous activity whilst visiting Hull.

Neighbouring the Streetlife Museum of Transport is the Wilberforce House Museum, the birthplace of William Wilberforce, the influential campaigner against the slave trade. Thus, the museum is dedicated to the history of the slave trade and its abolition. It displays Wilberforce’s diaries, journals

and belongings. The museum also touches upon contemporary slavery and how it's dealt with, as well as showcasing West African culture in its gallery.

As well as having a range of museums and galleries, East Yorkshire has many stately homes and famous gardens to explore. Some of the most impressive being Sewerby Hall, Burton Constable Hall, Burton Agnes Hall, and Wassand Hall. These incredible houses are surrounded by exquisite gardens and stunning scenery, providing a perfect way to spend a couple hours of your day. As well as spending your afternoon exploring a stately home, there are also many nature reserves spread around East Yorkshire to visit. In Beverley, there is Keldmarsh Nature Reserve and Pulfin Bog Nature Reserve; in Hull, Pearson Park Wildlife Garden is a lovely destination, and Skerne Wetlands Nature Reserve, in Dri eld, is splendid too.

Out of this world activities

One thing about East Yorkshire is that it o ers a range of unique activities and attractions to enjoy, one of which being The Deep. The fun-filled aquarium attracts visitors from all around the country and hosts events such as H20 Heroes, Tranquil Tuesdays and Silver Sharks. Being a conservation aquarium, it makes no profit and allows visitors to sponsor animals, such as turtles or sharks. If you’re looking for an interesting, unique venue for your meetings, product launches,

school visits or corporate ventures, The Deep has options available to suit all. Another animal-packed activity is Spurn Safari. Whilst embarking on a journey across the landscape in a Unimog, an ex-military 4x4, you’ll be able to witness incredible scenery and examine the wildlife and habitats of the National Nature Reserve. The highlight of the three-hour long journey has to be the visit to Northern England’s tallest lighthouse. An experience not to miss. Providing a similar experience is Highland cow trekking. It runs throughout the year, from March until December, and is one of the best, and most unique animal activities in East Yorkshire. At Dumble Farms, a family run conservation, not only can you go trekking with Highland cows, but you

can enjoy this whilst riding around on a tractor and learning all about the cows and calves in their natural habitat.

Something alternative to the animalpacked activities that East Yorkshire provides is a trip to Hotham’s Distillery, an experience that never disappoints. After the recent launch of their Rum School in 2022, they decided to launch a Vodka School, which includes creating your own flavour of vodka, exploring vodka distilling and learning about the history and production of vodka. This experience would be a unique gift, or just a great way to spend a night out with friends.

Festivals, music and comedy

East Yorkshire, and more specifically Hull, is also known for its entertainment scene. Especially popular for its comedy culture,

the Bonus Arena in Hull regularly welcomes well-known comedians, such as Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican, Jack Whitehall and Ian Stirling. Up close and PERSONAL

Have you ever wondered what goes into training a thoroughbred to win a race like the Grand National? In truth, it takes a lot of love, care and attention to detail from a large team of people. From 9-17 September, you can come and see that first hand at a yard in your area, as part of National Racehorse Week.

More than 130 venues including yards, studs and retraining centres nationwide will be throwing their stable doors open to the public, so you can experience the inner workings of a racing operation first hand – for free.

See just how fast a racehorse gallops, how much they eat a day, how they spend their downtime, and just how much time and a ection goes into caring for a racehorse before, during and after their career. You can ask questions to the wonderful team who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

As part of the initiative that invites more than 14,000 members of the public

to meet a racehorse, 40 community events will take place. Community events include engaging with school pupils through yard visits, as well as racehorses visiting care homes, hospitals and inner city schools. Throughout the week, the industry aims to bring racing closer to people of all ages and backgrounds, giving those, particularly in city locations, the chance to get close to a horse, sometimes for the very first time. The community visits will give those who may not have the chance to visit a venue the opportunity to meet a racehorse, to learn about the racing industry, and the wonderful lives current and retired racehorses lead. National Racehorse Week promises a unique and insightful day out for all the family, surrounded by animals and beautiful countryside. These open days will showcase a range of activities which varies from yard to yard, but all will o er the chance to meet racehorses in training, as well as the muchloved stable stars who have retired. Some yards even have purposefully designed equine swimming pools, an activity most horses enjoy. Physiotherapists, chiropractors and farriers (who put the horse’s shoes on) are an intrinsic part of any trainers' yard, and many open days will o er demonstrations and insight into this all-important aspect of horse management and welfare.

CASTLE HOWARD

Iconic North Yorkshire stately home Castle Howard was celebrated at the Museum + Heritage Awards earlier this summer, winning Marketing and Communications Campaign of the Year. The campaign was for Into the Woods: A Fairytale Christmas, Castle Howard’s much-loved Christmas experience which saw record-breaking visitor numbers in 2022.

It’s the latest story in what has been a wonderful and intriguing history. Set in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Castle Howard is a private residence and has been home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than 300 years. Castle Howard was commissioned by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle in 1699 and took over 100 years to complete. Successive generations have welcomed visitors to the House and it was first opened to the public by George Howard in 1952. Visitors can expect dramatic interiors and world-renowned art collections inside the House. The Gardens o er extensive woodland walks, temples, lakes and fountains with an adventure playground, Skelf Island, for the younger visitors to burn o steam.

Castle Howard is also home to a remarkable collection of textiles and wallpapers, which were part of an ambitious project by Rosalind, 9th Countess to redecorate the house from the 1880s onwards. Numerous bolts of fabric and rolls of wallpapers were carefully stored and protected from light damage and have recently been rediscovered.

ELSWORTH AT THE MILL

LEADING the WAY

Wherever Michael Wignall goes, Michelin stars follow - and The Angel at Hetton is no exception. He tells Absolutely Yorkshire about his passion project

42 ABSOLUTELY magazines

The Angel at Hetton is a stunning stone-built inn with 15th century origins, located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

It’s a building that instantly draws you in, even before you know who is in the kitchen.

Michael Wignall has had an astonishing career in cooking. A quick glance at his CV shows a whole host of awards and recognition: Michelin star and four AA Rosettes at The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms; two Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes at The Latymer; and two Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes at Gidleigh Park. So it came as a

pleasant surprise to foodies across the county when he decided to return to the North and run his own venue.

“I always said, throughout my career, that I never wanted a place of my own,” he smiles. “I’ve always been present in the kitchen and didn’t want the headache of finances and business management on top of that. But probably about seven years ago, while I was at Gidleigh Park, I had a change of heart and started to feel like I didn’t really want to work for anyone else anymore.

“It felt like it was time to do something with [wife] Johanna, and our business partners Jo and James Wellock, who are really good friends of ours, were in a position to invest and it’s worked great. With Johanna’s background too, it works, I’m in the kitchen and she runs the finances, HR and all the nitty gritty business stu , which I definitely couldn’t do as well as her.”

Why here? “The location,” he says simply. “I didn’t have a huge pull to go back up North, but when we visited the area again I was reminded of how lovely it is. I worked nearby at The Devonshire Arms a long time ago so I knew the Angel, and actually dined here with an old employer Reg Gi ord (St Michael’s Nook, Grasmere), he brought me here for Sunday lunch over 20 years ago now so I had fond memories of it. We just saw the potential: it’s a big property and it’s a lovely village. With the rooms as well, we saw the potential to create

a destination restaurant in a really rural location. It ticked all the boxes.”

It was in September 2018 that Michael and his wife Johanna took over The Angel with a vision to keep everything that it had become famous for – fantastic food, a warm welcome and a deep connection with the dramatic Yorkshire landscape – and make it outstanding. But a lot of hard work was ahead of the two. “With the pandemic, what we set out to do has evolved quite a lot,” Michael says. “Initially, in September 2018 we ran the pub as it was, then closed in January 2019 for the first renovations, reshaping the bar area and end of the building – which is 15th century, so a big job, an extensive project.

“We reopened for around four weeks before lockdown, and then within a few weeks of being closed we took a gamble and decided to proceed on with the renovations, which would take around four months, without knowing when we would be allowed to open again under the lockdown restrictions. So we converted the rest of the restaurant building, doing the rooms upstairs.

“Then we completely knocked the kitchen down and rebuilt it,” he continues. “It’s all electric and induction, it’s probably the most ecofriendly kitchen in the UK. We had a problem with electricity input in the village, so we have a system that e ectively distributes power that is usually used on super yachts. So we have a 300kw kitchen using 42kw, so with the increase in utility charges that has been a really worthwhile project.

ABSOLUTELY magazines 43 XXXXXXXX • XXXXX
FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW
“I didn’t have a huge pull to go up North again, but when we visited I was reminded of how lovely it is”

“Now we’re onto the fourth phase of the renovations, redoing the five rooms over the road in Fell View Barn and adding five more, so that’s an extensive project too. So we started with nine rooms, extended it to 15 and now we will have 20. Then the last phase is to refurbish the rooms in Sycamore Bank House, the cottage adjacent to the main building that will be completed next

year, which will be our fifth year here.”

In those five years, Michael’s cooking has swiftly won over all comers. “Everyone has always said they can recognise my food,” he says on his cooking style. “I was a Head Chef from a young age, I was 26 when I got my first Michelin star, which helped me shape my own style. My style is quite complex and dishes tend to have quite a lot of ingredients on the plate, but I think it’s about making everything work together. Making it pretty is important, but fundamentally, the tastes and textures should complement each other and everything is on the plate for a reason.

“We have a lunch tasting menu, which is slightly shorter, and our dinner tasting menu,” he adds about his approach at The Angel at Hetton. “We have an a la carte menu too, which is important to

me. Because of where we are, and with our rooms, we have people staying with us for several nights so it’s important for us to be able to o er that flexibility between tasting menus and a la carte. We change dishes quite frequently and work with fantastic British suppliers that I’ve worked with for many years, on a local level as well as across the wider country. My food has been inspired by the area here and of course, with it now being our own place, I do have the freedom to be more creative.”

As already mentioned, Michael is no stranger to a Michelin star – but is the awarding of one for The Angel at Hetton even more special? “It was, because of how challenging it was when we first took over,” he nods. “At first we had many times where we questioned our decision, we took it over and we were running it as a pub, trying to please everyone. It wasn’t really my style of food at first and we were establishing our team, the kitchen was old and it was hard work! To get the star when we did was a huge confidence boost and spurred us on to make it what we have. We’re still not exactly where we want to be, still striving to get better and better.”

Q & A STYLE Detecti ves

The Sherlocks' drummer Brandon Crook on collaborating with fashion brand, Ben Sherman

The Sherlocks were founded in 2010 by brothers Kiaran and Brandon Crook, and along with friends Alex Procter and Trent Jackson, who later joined the band, they have steadily built their loyal grassroots following while performing on the live circuit and are a hot band to watch in 2023.

The Ben Sherman Global Artist Foundry was created as a venture to engage and partner with musicians, artists, and creatives. It is a support system to help foster creativity for talent at every level, from unsigned, to breakthrough and well-established talent – and their collaboration with The Sherlocks is out now. The S/S23 Signature Collection design inspiration leads with vintage bandana print patterns reworked into the brand’s iconic signature silhouettes with a modern twist. Designs feature laundered textures on shirting and pay homage to a vintage archive aesthetic. Key highlights include the conversational paisley seersucker shirt and other bold prints with a handcrafted artisanal feel re-invented into the collection as knitwear and woven shirts.

Absolutely Yorkshire found some time with the band's drummer Brandon Crook to find out all about it.

Q First things first, how did The Sherlocks come about?

A It all started really organically. We used to play football, but one day we ended up just jamming in my dad’s garage and then we got the bug for it! From there we started selling out all the local pubs and clubs, it was chaos.

Q South Yorkshire has a hot indie scene, so how did growing up there influence your music?

A Well growing up, Arctic Monkeys were exploding on the scene so it was impossible to ignore! Another great band growing up that we used to listen to was Milburn, an incredible band.

Q You’ve had many successes, and have supported many legends on tour, what has been the highlight of your career so far?

A Supporting Liam Gallagher and Kaiser Chiefs on their tours was absolutely incredible! Supporting King Of Leons in She eld will also be a special day for us as it’s where me and Kiaran watched our first ever gig, so to play there in front of 13,000 will also be special.

Q Describe your band’s style in three words…

A Cool, casual and smart.

Q How did you feel when you were approached to be the face of Ben Sherman Global Artist Foundry’s SS23 Campaign?

A It was a really great moment for us. We’ve always worn Ben Sherman growing up, so to get the call was like a dream for us.

Q What do you think of Ben Sherman’s initiative to combine music and fashion?

A It’s the way forward, music and fashion has always and will always go hand in hand.

Q How does the brand resonate with The Sherlocks?

A It’s cool and has heritage, we were

over the moon with the campaign and the shots have come out amazing!

Q The collection favours trending colourways, advanced patterns and vintage concepts. What’s your favourite piece from the collection?

A I love the polos, they look class. Cotton polos, especially the patterned ones!

Q What can we expect from your next album, People Like Me and You?

A I don’t want to big this album up too much as I know when people hear it they’ll understand it’s the most complete and best album we’ve ever made! It’s got everything, just wait until August…

Q What do the next few years for The Sherlocks look like?

A We are looking to take things to the next level with some big outdoor shows for all our fans that have stuck with us over the years. We’ve got four albums now and there will be some big celebrations marking that.

An estimated one in four of us has varicose veins. They can be extremely painful, especially if you spend a lot of time standing, and if left untreated, can lead to skin damage (red and brown skin near the ankles), venous eczema, leg ulcers and phlebitis, which is clotting in the vein.

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?

The word ‘varicose’ comes from the Latin for ‘dilated’. Varicose veins are veins that are permanently dilated. They occur mainly in the lower extremities because of the greater pressure exerted on them. Muscles in the foot, calf and thigh act as pumps to push blood from the foot to the heart. Valves in the vein close like gates if blood tries to run in the wrong direction, but if these valves fail to work properly, blood is forced to flow back down the leg causing superficial veins under the skin to bulge. In e ect, the varicose veins you see in your legs are due to blood damming up in superficial veins and their branches. Why these veins fail is not completely understood, but it may be due to a weakness in the valve itself or in the vein wall.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY VARICOSE VEINS?

Many people think of varicose veins as being a ‘female a iction’ and while pregnancy can be a contributing factor, many men are a ected too, especially those with jobs that require them to spend hours at a time on their feet, or sat behind a desk. In addition to the veins themselves, legs can often feel tired and heavy and may be prone to swelling and cramping.

HELP WITH VARICOSE VEINS

In severe cases, surgery is the sensible option, but if you take care of your legs before they get to such a serious stage, then less drastic treatments can go a long way.

Although probably not the look you’re going for, support stockings can help. They work by exerting more pressure near the ankles and feet, providing an extra squeeze that promotes blood flow.

Avoid standing for prolonged periods of time and if you do have to stand for a while, make a point of changing your position, shifting from one leg to the other, and wiggling your toes to help support your circulation.

Give heels a miss – low heeled shoes or flats work your calf muscles harder which is better for your veins.

Try to maintain a healthy weight to take the pressure o your veins, incorporating

lots of anti-inflammatory foods into your diet, and take plenty of regular exercise. To help reduce heavy legs and swelling, elevate your legs above the level of your heart for about 10 minutes each day. A simple way of achieving this is by lying down and resting your legs on a stack of pillows.

NATURAL SUPPORT FOR HEALTHY VEINS

Horse chestnut is probably the most popular herb used in the treatment of varicose veins. The seeds of the horse chestnut tree are used medicinally and these are the same seeds gathered each autumn for the game of conkers. They need to be prepared commercially, as various substances have to be removed from them before oral use. Try A.Vogel’s Venaforce Horse Chestnut tablets. If legs feel heavy or tired, there’s Venagel Horse Chestnut Gel. With extract of fresh horse chestnut, it helps to cool and soothe tired, heavy or aching legs. Smooth upwards and massage gently into legs.

Tullivers started out by selling herbs and wholefoods, and whilst they still keep many of those original products, they now stock a wide range of supplements, free-from products and organic bodycare. They pack

their own dried fruit and nuts, so that they can choose the best; and local suppliers make their tofu, honey and provide their free-range eggs, and they o er organically-grown and Fair Trade options on many products.

In 1983 founders Helen Spath and David Weston passed the reins to assistant manager Alan Malcolm in 2016, who had been working at the shop for 15 years, and his wife, Tracey, herself a Tullivers veteran. The shop is now owned by Alan and Tracey, along with Alan’s sister and brother-in-law, making it a true family-run business. Whether you need help with digestive disorders, stress, joint problems, pregnancy, menopause, sleep problems or children’s health, their team is on hand. Their business supports over 40 other local businesses, which saves on business miles, and boosts the wider local economy. They keep things local wherever possible, they’re huge advocates of recycling and all of their energy is from a green supplier – they even cycle or bus to work!

HORSE CHESTNUT IS A NATURAL REMEDY

To sleep, perchance to dream. So wrote the world’s most infamous insomniac, Sir William Shakespeare in Hamlet – though sleep, or rather the lack of it, features throughout his acclaimed works. Minimal sleep may have helped the bard become a prolific playwright, but it also caused huge mental torment, expressed in many of his characters who su er from a range of debilitating issues, be it sleep apnea, nightmares, or chronic insomnia.

We are supposed to spend a third of our lifetime in the land of nod, but in modern times with mobile phones spewing out 24-hour news, unobtainable perfection portrayed via social media and chronic anxiety are all veering to shatter our slumber – as is an unhealthy lifestyle of fast food and inertia.

Charities such as the Sleep Apnoea Trust have clinics across Yorkshire and the demand for treatment is soaring. This is a potentially serious disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts with the main driving force for the condition being obesity.

Rest EASY

But not all sleep issues are caused by an inactive lifestyle as stress and anxiety can also be a major cause. Jo Foster, owner of Richmond-based natural aromatherapy brand Kiss the Moon, spent years travelling the world for work, leaving Jo constantly jetlagged. Having changed her career and lifestyle, Jo’s full of snippets of advice on achieving the perfect slumber. “My biggest tip is to claim back the last 20 minutes of the day to unwind such as having a bath, reading a book or doing some stretches.”

My own sleep issues stem from a heart-breaking sudden bereavement, after which I found it increasingly di cult to sleep – and when I did, I’d often su er sleep terrors. I also occasionally sleepwalk and was once escorted by a kindly night

porter back to my room after I slept walked into a bar at a Cardi hotel!

Rather than mainlining Nytol, I’m always on the lookout for natural alternatives. And believe me, I have tried everything in a quest to tumble into a heavenly slumber.

One utter game changer was recommended to me by a Leeds’ health guru, who advised sipping a cup of soothing Moon Milk, just before bed. This concoction consists of warm milk, honey, cinnamon, cardamon and most crucially Ashwagandha – an Ayurvedic herb that has been used for thousands of years to relieve stress.

Another big hit is Sleepee Doze, a revolutionary supplement also including Ashwagandha among its ingredients, created by founder Dan Chapman for his sleep deprived wife as a natural alternative to sleeping pills. And I never travel anywhere without a batch of the iconic jasmine scented self-heating masks by Spacemasks. Within moments of putting on the mask while listening to the free wellbeing app Insight Timer, I’m snoozing away into a delicious dreamland.

Moroccan Stu ed Aubergine

INGREDIENTS

• 4 small Aubergines

• 2 tbsp coconut oil

• 1 pinch sea salt

• 1 cup green lentils (rinsed and well drained)

Sauce

• 3 cloves garlic (skins removed)

• 1/2 medium onion (or 2 small shallots, chopped)

• 1 large red bell pepper (or use 2 small), seeds removed, roughly chopped

• 2 tbsp tomato puree

• 1 1⁄2 tbsp maple syrup

• 1⁄2 tsp sea salt

• 1 tbsp smoked or sweet paprika

• 1 tsp ground cumin

• 1⁄2 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp ground ginger

• 1⁄2 tsp ground turmeric

• 1⁄2 tsp cayenne pepper

• 1 1⁄2 tbsp lemon juice

• 3⁄4 cup fresh chopped coriander.

• 1 3⁄4 cups chopped tomatoes

• 1⁄4 tsp each sea salt and black pepper (plus more to taste)

• Vegan parmesan to top

METHOD

1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees

F (190 C) and get out a 9×13-inch (or similar size) baking dish.

2 Cook lentils first by bringing water to a boil and adding lentils. Bring back to a boil. Then reduce heat to low and simmer (uncovered) for about 20 minutes or until lentils are tender.

3 In the meantime, to a food processor or small blender, add garlic, onion or shallot, bell pepper, tomato paste, maple syrup, sea salt, paprika, cumin, coriander, ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice. Mix to thoroughly combine. Set aside.

4 Once the lentils have cooked, drain o any excess liquid and then add spice mixture and coriander and mix well to combine.

5 To a large saucepan add Moroccan-spiced lentils, crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, and paprika. Heat over medium heat until bubbling. Then reduce heat to simmer and cook for 5 minutes more. Taste and adjust flavour as needed, adding more salt and pepper for overall flavour or paprika for smokiness.

6 Use a knife to cut an angled divot out of the centre of your aubergine. Then use a spoon to scrape out a

hollow centre. Leave enough flesh so it’s sturdy enough to hold the lentils.

7 Heat a large rimmed pan over medium heat. Once hot, add oil and the aubergine cut-side down and cover – you may have to do this in two (or more if increasing batch size) batches depending on the size of your pan. Cook on one side for 4-5 minutes or until slightly charred. Then flip the eggplant over on the other side, cover, and cook for 4-5 minutes more. You’re looking for the aubergine to be softened and browned on the outside.

8 Once the aubergine is cooked, place cut-side up in your baking dish and top with lentils. There should be plenty to fill and some overflow, which can be spooned down into the dish. Top with vegan parmesan cheese.

METHOD

1 Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2 Lightly grease a large baking sheet/pan with nonstick cooking oil spray.

Maple and Harissa Roast Carrots on a Beetroot Quinoa

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tsp cumin seeds

• 2 tsp maple syrup.

• 3 tbs harissa paste

• 20g vegan unsalted butter, melted

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 800g long baby carrots (or regular carrots, cut into long, thin batons, 10 x 1½cm), peeled and stems trimmed (to leave just a cm or two)

• 10g coriander leaves, roughly chopped

• 60g pomegranate seeds (from ½ a pomegranate)

For the quinoa

• 190g quinoa

• ¾ tsp fine sea salt

• 1 beetroot

• Zest 1 lemon and 1 tbsp juice

• 1 shallot, sliced

• 55g fresh dill, finely chopped

For the dressing

• 2tbsp lemon juice

• 100ml Balsamic vinegar

• 2 tsp dark brown sugar

• 1 small beetroot cooked.

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 230°C fan.

2 In a large bowl, mix together the cumin, maple syrup, harissa, butter, oil and ¾ teaspoon of salt. Add the carrots, mix well, then spread out on a large parchmentlined baking tray: you don’t want to overcrowd the carrots, so use two trays if you need to.

3 Rinse the quinoa well in a fine sieve, then drain. Transfer to a saucepan, then add 415ml water and the sea salt. Bring to the boil over a medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and cook, covered, for about 20 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed and the grains are tender. Flu up the grains with a fork.

4 While the quinoa is cooking, carefully peel the beetroot and finely grate. Toss the beetroot with the lemon juice in a medium bowl, then set aside.

5 Roast the carrots for 12–14 minutes, until the carrots are beginning to brown but still retain a bite, then remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

6 In a blender, blend together the beetroot, balsamic vinegar and dark brown sugar adding the lemon juice and a little water until you reach the right consistency.

7 Mix the cooked quinoa with a tsp of the dressing, the grated beetroot, chopped dill and sliced shallots and add to the plate.

8 Top this with the harissa roasted carrots, drizzle with remaining dressing and garnish with fresh coriander leaves and pomegranate seeds.

Absolutely meets Sir Ian Botham to talk cricket, golf and the power of cannabidiol

68 ABSOLUTELY magazines
SIR IAN BOTHAM AND HIS

Sir Ian Botham is remembered for routinely besting titans of cricket. Now 67, Botham enjoyed a long and (very) illustrious career; for Somerset, the England team, as well as spells in Australia.

Frankly, it’s good of them to let him in, given his celebrated match-winning performance against Kim Hughes’s baggy greens during the Ashes Test at Headingley, in 1981. Electing to bat first, Australia had England on the ropes and enforced the follow-on. Out strode Botham, clocking an unbeaten 149 runs before heading back to the dressing room for a cigar. That he also took seven wickets only cemented his legend.

So it came as something of a challenge when in July last year Botham found himself unable to walk around a golf course as he once could – in addition to being one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, golf is a lifelong passion.

It was his son, Liam, who sent his father something new to incorporate in his daily routine. Specifically, the EthicaCBD Sports Gel with CBD and CBG. Based in the seaside town of Bude, in Cornwall, the company launched three years ago and have quickly earned global recognition, winning a gong at the World CBD Awards in 2022. CBD products

are increasingly being incorporated into wellness regimes. As the name suggests, EthicaCBD go to great lengths to create what they describe as, “the highest quality ethical CBD for people and planet”.

As it turns out, alongside proving themselves as the ethical front runner of the UK CBD industry, they’re also getting sporting legends quite literally back into the swing of things. After using the all-natural CBD gel, Botham returned to the fairway and renewed his spot in competitive golf, turning out in the Alfred Dunhill Links last year.

In conversation with Botham, ‘competitive’ is a word that crops up a lot. The Botham family is a genuine sporting dynasty. His son, the aforementioned Liam, played county cricket for Hampshire, as well as dual codes in top-flight rugby (union for Cardi Blues, league for Bradford Bulls).

Liam’s son, James, meanwhile, plies his own sporting trade in elite rugby union, both for Cardi and the Wales national side. As a passionate Englishman, is Botham senior conflicted about having a dragon in the dynasty? “Goodness, no. James was born in Wales and always swore allegiance.”

Just as well, considering James’ fiancée is the Wales hockey international Izzy Webb. In any Botham household, the competitive instinct is strong. “I play everything to win. I even want to beat the grandchildren at tiddlywinks”, Botham says.

These days it’s golf that keeps his competitive juices flowing. “When I was playing county cricket, a lot of the guys played golf.” For a world-class batsman, golf is surely a seamless transition. “It should be, given a golf ball is still when you hit it but it doesn’t always work that way.”

Of those able to make the switch, Botham recalls that, “Viv could hit the ball a long way”. ‘Viv’, for those too young to remember, is Sir Vivian Richards, the fearsome West Indies batsman who could no doubt hit a cannonball across the Channel. “At my peak I played o a handicap of 3,” Botham says. Which must have seemed a distant memory last summer. At the Dunhill Links, Botham found that the gel was the competitive advantage that he needed.

The gel’s active ingredient, cannabidiol (CBD), was first discovered in 1940 but it’s only in recent years that it has been developed for use in a wide range of products. EthicaCBD Sports Gel combines two powerful cannabinoids with other dynamic natural extracts such as organic silicium, blackpepper oil, menthol and camphor, ensuring you get the very best plant-based care.

TURN BACK FROM PAIN

Woodlands Hospital o ers less invasive surgery to ease sciatica pain

Asurgeon at Darlington’s Woodlands Hospital is using an innovative technique to o er patients fast and, in many cases, permanent relief from pain and misery.

Over the past couple of years, consultant Dan Fagan has been using minimal access surgery to perform percutaneous discectomy operations to deal with slipped or crushed discs that are pressing on the nerves that cause sciatica leg pain. Traditional surgery involves a general anaesthetic and quite invasive treatment with a long recovery period.

By using imaging techniques for accuracy, and an operating device called a spine wand, Mr Fagan only needs to make a couple of small incisions in the back, at the location of the damaged disc, before inserting a portal through which he feeds the wand. The wand

generates a plasma field over the tip, which quickly vaporises the damaged part of the disc.

The procedure is treated as a day-case, and treatment only takes about 30 minutes, under a light sedation. It is far less invasive than traditional surgery, and o ers patients an 80 per cent chance of eliminating the sciatic pain, with little chance of complications or harm. Patients are also up and about very quickly after the procedure, and home the same day. Mr Fagan is one of only a very few surgeons in the UK using this procedure, and the only one in the North-East.

“We are very lucky to have the equipment and the expertise, right here at the Woodlands, to be able to o er patients the most cutting edge treatment for conditions that can prevent them living their best lives,” he says. “Severe sciatica can a ect your ability to work, to enjoy sports, and just live your daily life. Many patients are choosing to self-pay and be treated privately for things like slipped discs

because it’s much quicker, our procedures are less invasive, and recovery is much faster. If you are in pain and waiting to see your GP, or waiting for an operation, it will also a ect your mental well-being. In most cases, this is a quick and easy answer to what may have been years of pain and misery for someone.”

Mr Fagan does take GP referrals, but patients can book direct with his practice, SpineArt, and will usually have an appointment for an assessment within a week, rather than waiting to go through the NHS system. Initial treatment is likely to involve a very straightforward spine injection under local anaesthetic, which often solves the problem. If that doesn’t work, Mr Fagan will advise a percutaneous discectomy.

“I’m seeing a lot of people at the moment, who have previously had the injection but, unfortunately, the symptoms have returned and they are needing further intervention, which would normally mean a long wait for traditional surgery. Because they want to get back to a full and healthy life as soon as possible, they are opting to come to the Woodlands for the treatment.”

Q As the Turkish Baths are so unique, what can we expect upon arrival?

A With the pace of life today, it’s more important than ever to take time out to unwind and devote yourself to the serious business of relaxing. The Turkish Baths Harrogate is your opportunity to step back in time. Although Turkish Baths were common in Victorian times, only seven remain and ours dates back to the 19th century, none are as historically complete and in full working order as the Turkish Baths Harrogate. Our spa is renowned for its tranquil and peaceful surroundings, enhanced by our team of highly qualified and friendly sta who carry out our extensive menu of contemporary spa treatments and therapies. We o er a variety of indulgent and relaxing treatments; from luxurious candle massages to every day essentials such as manicures and pedicures.

Q What is the most popular treatment guests receive?

A Definitely the Turkish Spa Body Ritual – this is a wonderful treatment that encourages an overall sense of well-being. It incorporates a stimulating full body exfoliation to smooth and revitalise the skin, and an energising full body massage using warmed massage oils.

Q Can you give us a brief history of the baths?

A The Royal baths complex was completed in 1897 and delivered various treatments from dispensing of medicinal waters, hydrotherapy departments, peat baths and the Turkish baths as it remains today. The Turkish baths survived through two world wars, the creation of the NHS, seven monarchs and only ever closed through the covid lockdowns.

Q Describe the Turkish Baths experience…

A Your experience starts with a cleansing shower, followed by the steam room. Then another shower before your invigorating dip into the plunge pool. After that we recommend that you alternate the Heat Experiences (three hot rooms of varying temperatures) with a dip in the plunge pool. Guests leave feeling exhilarated, with a sense of euphoria, total relaxation and absolute cleanliness.

Searching for bespoke kitchen inspiration?

Yorkshire’s

behind the scenes at four special projects

South Bank, York

Packed with personality, quirkiness and charm, South Bank is the latest project from The Main Company. A stunning Victorian townhouse in York, this eclectic home combines original features with the homeowner’s colourful and adventurous style.

At the heart of the home is the incredibly light and spacious kitchen. Di erent colours, textures and materials are complemented by the abundance of natural light that flows through the multiple Crittal windows and ceiling – boasting views across the leafy garden.

Every detail of the kitchen has been carefully considered, from the grand chandelier above the island with matching wall lights, to the personal possessions on the shelves and worktops. The kitchen has been designed in a classic shaker style, finished with dramatic Little Greene Company Lamp Black paint. The dark tones of the cabinets pair beautifully with the striking Calacutta Black quartz worktops that span throughout the space, whilst also contrasting with the soft pink walls.

From the incredible Lacanche Classic Citeaux stove in Rose Quartz to the Ribchester Shaws sink, the kitchen is full of eyecatching pieces and appliances that result in a truly luxurious scheme. Smaller details

such as the Armac Martin Leebank handles, brass Quooker boiling tap above the hob and brass-wrapped floating shelves that occupy the walls o er the final finishing touch.

The open-plan layout results in a seamless flow, providing natural zoning within the space. From the jewel-coloured bar stools at the kitchen island at the centre of the kitchen to the oval dining table and cosy window seat, it is truly a space for both relaxing and entertaining.

North Yorkshire

Located amongst patchwork fields and tumbling Yorkshire countryside, this wonderful 18th century barn has been fully renovated, creating a beautiful family home. The perfect combination of old meets new, the barn has been sympathetically transformed, adding modern touches whilst enhancing existing features such as exposed beams and brickwork.

The kitchen is the heart of the home. The homeowners were craving a light and airy space, and knocking through a number of rooms created the new kitchen area. Barn conversions can often feel a little dark, so floor to ceiling windows and a skylight were added, allowing natural light to flow into the property with ease.

The Main Company are passionate about rustic and reclaimed materials, and this barn

conversion o ered the perfect canvas for one of their bespoke kitchens. The natural textures and materials o ered the perfect backdrop, and would complement the finished kitchen beautifully.

The homeowners chose a traditional shaker style kitchen, but added a modern twist through the colours and finishing touches used. Whilst some elements were the epitome of traditional including the refurbished AGA, on-trend and modern touches like black accents were added, creating a wonderfully stylish end result. One of our favourite things about this kitchen is how the combination of materials used work seamlessly together, from the stone floor to the exposed oak shelving.

The shaker style cabinetry was finished using North Brink Grey paint by the Little Greene Company, with Pompeian Ash used for the island unit. Black Buster & Punch handles finish o the cabinets. A combination of full-length cupboards and exposed oak shelves were used to maximise storage and add plenty of character to the space. Further storage was built into the island, which also provided room for seating, as well as the exposed reclaimed oak bar area which divides the kitchen and living space.

Cattal Street, York

With vast expertise and an unrivalled passion for creative kitchen design, The Main Company have been creating handcrafted, bespoke kitchens from their North Yorkshire workshop for the last 40 years. Incorporating both modern and traditional design, a range of authentic materials are celebrated for their unique character and finish, providing a truly individual style in the home. The Cattal Street project is no exception, with stainless steel and concrete surfaces combined with rustic reclaimed wood to achieve an undeniably contemporary kitchen that remains sympathetic to the original barn structure. This major barn conversion was a huge redevelopment project, featuring a Main Company bespoke kitchen, reclaimed wall cladding throughout and reclaimed flooring.

Considering on-trend industrial finishes, the Cattal Street project makes the most of the vast space with a textured concrete shelving unit and reclaimed Oldham Mill Board pine used for cabinetry throughout. The impressive barn proportions have been embraced to create an open-plan kitchen and living room that provides a unique style statement and versatile space for the whole family to enjoy. Tailored to the homeowners, bespoke details are included in all elements of the project; from the stainless steel pantry doors to

the original reclaimed barn breakfast bar, cutting edge brassware and urban fixtures that complete the sophisticated salvaged charm of the interior.

The reclaimed engineered pine finish of Oldham Mill Board, solid oak drawer boxes, lacquered birch plywood carcasses and stainless steel materials used in this bespoke kitchen are extraordinary. The open shelving and minimalist style keeps the room feeling cool and sophisticated. A chromatic grey aged zinc is used as a splashback, an addition to the kitchen that adds further depth and texture to achieve an industrial design. This kitchen’s simple palette of browns and greys and the many layers within the pine wood are combined in harmony – they work together perfectly.

West Yorkshire

Part of a wider property renovation, this West Yorkshire property is full of quirks and individuality. The homeowner loves interiors, especially anything with a vintage feel, something that was taken into account at each stage of planning. Vintage, retro styling was exactly what the customer desired and this is what was delivered, using the finest materials.

The open-plan space was the perfect location for the kitchen, somewhere that could be showed o to visitors and provided an ideal area for entertaining. This large and bright space provided a versatile area to work with, the floor to ceiling

windows allowed natural light to pour into the space, giving the homeowner the option to be more daring with the colour scheme and experiment with darker hues. The kitchen is clean and simple and for the cabinetry a smooth, handless cupboard style was opted for; this was paired with rustic materials such as antique brass and concrete, creating a bespoke look for the customer. The built-in cupboards were complemented by the addition of a kitchen island.

The island was topped with a wraparound concrete worktop and an antique brass panel was installed – this looks particularly lovely when the sun hits it and will get better with age. Rather than opt for upper cabinets, the homeowner opted for open shelving, this works particularly well in the space. To keep in with the aesthetic of the kitchen, they also opted for an integrated extractor hood, matching the units below.

The space has been finished o beautifully by the homeowner, giving a somewhat modern kitchen style, a retro finish. Mismatched pendant lighting adds a relaxed and laid-back feel to the space and the colour of the cupboards has been contrasted beautifully by the kitchen tiles and jewel-tone furnishings. Artwork and house plants tie the room together, creating a space that will be enjoyed for years to come.

TAKING ROOT

Visitors arriving into Leeds city centre have been greeted by an extraordinary sight. A remarkable sculptural 'forest' has appeared in the main public square outside Leeds railway station. Comprising 127 seven-metre-high timber fins, this quietly powerful temporary installation, entitled 'Making A Stand', aims to 'disrupt' the popular pedestrian route by creating an awe-inspiring artwork using commercially grown timber

'borrowed' from the construction supply chain, which can be repurposed when the work is dismantled at the end of the year.

Amidst the ongoing discourse surrounding climate protests and their impact on everyday lives, 'Making A Stand' is a thought-provoking artistic intervention that invites people to pause, explore and contemplate major environmental issues in a visually striking and provocative manner.

The installation is co-created by acclaimed visual artist Michael Pinsky and awardwinning environmental architects Studio Bark (both known for creating work that challenges the status quo on climate change and urban design). It is one of 12 signature projects commissioned as part of LEEDS 2023’s transformational Year of Culture, and is inspired by the city’s origins as a forested area called Leodis over a thousand years ago, which gave rise to the name ‘Leeds’.

The co-creators of 'Making A Stand' aim to draw attention to the urgent need for the built environment industry to replace carbon-intensive materials like concrete and steel with more sustainable alternatives, such as timber. The project aims to ignite a conversation surrounding material life cycles and to demonstrate that large-scale, temporary art can also be created in a sustainable way.

The timber fins, which have been 'borrowed' from the supply chain at a

point between felling and stacking, are positioned vertically making them quite literally 'stand up' like a stand of trees in nature. The fins work together with a webbed canopy of steel wire ropes and steel struts, acting in tension and compression to ensure minimal damage to the wood so that it can be repurposed at the end of the year, minimising waste while maximising opportunities for carbon capture and storage.

Artist Michael Pinsky says: “It’s crucial to di erentiate between forests grown as crops for synchronised harvesting and forests left undisturbed to mature. Both types of forests play a vital role in carbon capture and contribute to a sustainable

planet. For 'Making A Stand' our emphasis lies with commercially grown wood suitable for construction. For the last century or more, wood has been overlooked as a building material despite medieval structures adorned with wooden beams dating back hundreds of years. We want to draw attention to the potential of timber as a low carbon construction material and encourage conversations surrounding material life cycles. 'Making a Stand' serves as a reminder of the climate crisis and that we have been able to live symbiotically with nature for centuries – this city is even named after the ancient forest upon which it is built. We can do this again, as long as we

channel our astonishing technical ingenuity towards an ecologically focused future.”

The project uses timber felled from sustainable forests in the UK where wood is grown for use in construction. Sliced into ‘fins’ by Whitney Sawmills in Herefordshire, the final stages of fabrication took place at Stage One, a specialist fabricator based near York.

Wilf Meynell, director at Studio Bark, adds: “The Douglas Fir Trees used in the construction of 'Making A Stand' have been meticulously chosen from sustainable forests within the UK. This selection was essential as it addresses the issue of the UK's heavy reliance on imported timber for construction. Our objective in sourcing the

wood in this country is to 'lock up' as much embodied carbon as possible, aligning with our commitment to create a sustainable temporary installation. Each Douglas Fir fin can even be traced back to the precise stump in the forest using a unique code, which will enable us to track the journey of its lifecycle for many years to come.”

'Making A Stand' will remain in situ in City Square until the end of 2023, hosting a series of inspiring activities and events from yoga and dance to poetry and music. Kully

Thiarai, creative director and CEO of LEEDS 2023, says: “'Making A Stand' represents a profound creative statement and one we hope will be an awe-inspiring intervention for the thousands of passersby who cross the square daily. We are inviting everyone to come explore and consider the power of art in addressing pressing environmental concerns. Michael Pinsky and Studio Bark have created something incredibly ambitious with this beautiful yet poignant installation, which will o er a place for quiet contemplation and conversation as well as a stunning backdrop to celebrate creativity throughout the year.”

Sleep RIGHT

Natalie Nemes, of family run Simply Beds in North Yorkshire, on what to consider when buying your mattress and more

Q Tell us about Simply Beds...

A We’re a family run bed retail business, headed up by four siblings with three stores in North Yorkshire (Ripon, Northallerton and Catterick Garrison), and for over 20 years we have built up a wealth of sleep expertise.

Q Has our approach to beds and sleeping changed over recent years?

A Yes, it has. Years ago your chiropractor might have suggested that an orthopaedic ‘firmer’ mattress is better for your back, but this doesn’t suit everyone. A firm mattress doesn't always equate to a supportive one – depending on whether you sleep on your back, side or front, a firm mattress could evenly distribute your weight or put too much pressure on your hips, shoulder, and neck.

We have some great mattresses that are super comfy and extremely supportive. We o er mattresses that are ‘zoned’. This means that the mattress is split into di erent sections of firmness. Across the middle the springs are firmer, supporting your lumbar area, and at the head end and foot end, it’s slightly softer, so you don’t wake up with an achy neck and shoulders.

Q What top tips do you have about buying the right bed for the perfect night’s sleep?

A We suggest going physically bed shopping. Opting for an online trial mattress might not be right for you, hoping that one mattress might suit everyone is highly unlikely as we all sleep in di erent positions, plus the many other factors to consider. Do you get

hot at night? Do you share with a partner? Get back pain? Are you an allergy su erer?

As a rule of thumb, the position you wake up in on a morning is generally the position that you sleep in most of the time. So, if you wake up on your front, we suggest a firmer mattress. If you wake up on your side, then a medium mattress and if you wake up on your back, we suggest a softer mattress.

If you’re a back sleeper, a good test is to lie down and then attempt to slide your hand under your back. It should be slightly di cult. If your hand slides under easily, then the mattress is most likely too firm. If you can’t get your hand in at all, the mattress is probably too soft.

However, these are only suggestions, only you know what feels comfortable.

Q What are typically your most popular products and why do you think that is?

A The Hypnos Wool Origins range (pictured) of mattresses are hugely popular now. The environment is a major factor in people’s mattress choice and choosing a 100% recyclable mattress is important to many of us.

One of things we’re most proud about this range is that the mattresses are upholstered with fleeces from Red Tractor Farms based in the Yorkshire Dales. That’s 100% British wool traceable to our very own Swaledale sheep.

Along with Hypnos, Harrison Spinks is also committed to protecting the environment.

O ering mattresses that are ‘foam free’ ‘chemical free’ and ‘glue free’. This alongside the luxurious quality fillings is why it’s hugely popular with our customers.

JEWEL

The southernmost of the Ionian islands, Zakynthos is small and perfectly formed. At just 17km wide and 40km long, it has an intimate feel with its narrow lanes winding through verdant forests and olive groves. We’ve never seen so many olive trees, of all shapes and sizes, with the oldest being there for over 2,000 years. Also known as The Flower of the East because of its fertility, it’s one of the greenest Greek islands and is also home to stunning coastal cli s, hidden sea caves, and of course those dazzling Grecian shades of blue from sea to sky.

The first of our two-centre stops is Lesante Blu, a luxurious and exclusive adults-only resort located in the picturesque village of Tragaki, a short drive from the airport. Perched on high it looks out over the sparkle of the mesmerising azure sea. It’s a view we can’t tear ourselves away from, and luckily everything is designed to ensure we don’t have to, wherever we are.

Our spacious suite is bright and contemporary with a lavish marble-clad bathroom. We’re immediately drawn to the balcony which looks across the shimmering, terraced infinity pools and lush manicured gardens towards the private beach and the bluest of horizons. The perfect spot to while away the time made all the more indulgent by our own personal hot tub bubbling away in the corner. We spend our days exploring every corner of the resort. a therapeutic massage. The sandy beach with its ultra-comfy beach beds is the perfect spot for relaxation and a dip in the balmy sea and refreshment is never far away with the Ostria pool bar and chic beach bar, both close by, and a beach-side restaurant serving a vast selection of delightful dishes. At night we treat ourselves to dinner at the main restaurant, Melia, enjoying the flavours of the Mediterranean and seasonal local ingredients. Every mouthful is a treat at Lesante Blu, and it’s a wrench to tear ourselves away.

Luckily we don’t have far to go, and our next destination, Lesante Cape, is the latest addition to the Lesante collection and about a 10-minute drive away. It opened in June 2022 and is quite simply stunning. The village-style resort is inspired by traditional architecture and design with beautiful stonework and flowers and herbs that fill the warm air with their delicious aromas.

Lesante Cape days start with the sensational breakfast spread (we’ve never seen so many early morning sweet and savoury treats). We also enjoyed leisurely poolside lunches and fine dining evenings. The food is heavenly, and every restaurant comes with a view. We loved the artisanal shops, wine cellar (Zakyntheon wine is surprisingly good), cultural museum, and traditional taverna at the heart of the resort.

Think meaty kebabs, succulent salads and dips,

plate smashing and exuberant Greek dancing. There’s an onsite fruit and vegetable garden with its stunning outdoor kitchen where we enjoyed a cooking lesson and sampled the ultimate farm-totable lunch. Nourishing the local environment as well as its guests is paramount at Lesante Cape. We took time out to explore more of the island, meandering around the streets of the capital, Zakynthos Town, with its colourful bougainvillea spilling over the whitewashed buildings and its picturesque yacht-filled harbour. And we browsed in the cornucopian shops of nearby Tsilivi, a bustling little town with a beautiful beach and myriad bars and restaurants. We took to the sea for a private yacht cruise and visited the loggerhead turtle beach the island is famous for. We even tried creating our own pottery at the Hanne Mi Ceramic Art Studio (ceramichannemi.com) before returning to our Greek island home to absorb more of those turquoise vibes in Lesante luxury. You can never have too much of that, after all.

THE FIFE ARMS

It’s a widely accepted theory that the modern game of golf originated in Scotland, so it comes as no surprise that Braemar is the home of Scotland’s highest and wildest golf course. Lying in a natural amphitheatre created by the imposing Grampian Mountains and the magnificent Cairngorms National Park, guests can visit the 18-hole Braemar Golf Course where the greens are considered to be the finest in the area.

POWER Points

Wakefield Girls' High School recently held their #empowHER event, with a host of guest speakers. We caught up with three of them

REBECCA WARD SUSTAINABILITY ANALYST, RADLEY YELDAR

Q How would you sum up your time at Wakefield Girls?

A My favourite memories come from my time playing lots of sport. My only real talent lies in hockey – which I still enjoy playing – but it didn’t stop me from trying my hand at netball, athletics, swimming, rugby etc at school. In fact, I couldn’t advocate for sports and exercise enough – I credit a lot the so-called “soft” skills I implement every day to participation in team sport (a story for another day).

I also worked hard in the classroom. Academically, I was/am science leaning, with maths, physics, chemistry, and geography being favourites. In summary, my time at WGHS was pretty busy!

Q Would you say a particular teacher or something you enjoyed at school inspired your career path?

A I have never had a certain career path in mind. Instead, I consider myself lucky in that I’ve always felt empowered to continue studying subjects that interest me. And, I had lots of great teachers at school who made their subjects interesting to me. Maths and geography were always

personal favourites, and I’d have to give at least some credit to my teachers for that! I am so appreciative that my maths teachers made a point of explaining the multitude of applications maths has in the real world.

Q Tell us about what you do today…

A I was lucky enough to receive a job o er to become a Sustainability Analyst at Radley Yeldar, based in London. We are a communications agency at heart, with my team specialising in sustainability reporting and strategy. We help – and at times gently push – multinational companies to e ectively and transparently address their impacts on people and the environment. I am part of a team of super intelligent sustainability enthusiasts who are on a mission to create sustainability strategies which engender real change, for the better.

Q Why were you keen to appear at the #empowHER event at Wakefield Girls?

A I am passionate about girls and women feeling empowered in every aspect of their lives. It was not until I began my working life that I truly recognised how lucky I was to have never su ered imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome a icts many of the inspiring women I have worked with, and it’s pretty gutting to hear about. It results in highly qualified and intelligent women feeling insecure and superfluous. It happens when women continuously have their confidence knocked over a period of time. Empowerment is important because we need to hear the innovative ideas and demanding questions that women often keep to themselves in order to put an end to the status quo. We are living through the era of the permacrisis, and solutions to crises like climate change need diversity of thought. They mandate the end of the status quo. In short (and not to be too dramatic), our future depends on the empowerment of women and other underrepresented groups.

Q What’s your message for girls all over Yorkshire about the future ahead of them?

A Grasp the opportunities that come your way with both hands, and never do anything half-heartedly. And, be kind.

BECKY BAKER

ENTREPRENEUR AND FOUNDER OF K9 NATION AND SAFE RECEIPT

Q How would you sum up your time at Wakefield Girls?

A I would say that my time at Wakefield Girls was full of opportunity. There is no doubt in my mind that the exposure I had to di erent situations or challenges is what provided me with some of my core skills I rely on in my everyday life. When I left school I remember being filled with a sense that I could achieve anything if I wanted to and it was just a case of picking what I wanted to do. That sense of confidence and self belief was built up from both my parents and my school environment, without doubt.

Q Would you say a particular teacher or something you enjoyed at school inspired your career path?

A What is strange about the role I had, as a software product manager, before starting my own business, is that it didn’t even exist when I was at school. I would say however, that the school allowed me to try lots of new things so that I could figure out what my strengths and weaknesses were.

Q Tell us about what you do today…

A I am a tech startup founder of two app businesses as well as working part time as a software product manager for a large law firm in Leeds.

Q Why were you keen to appear at the #empowHER event at Wakefield Girls?

A I strongly believe that you have to see something to believe it’s possible. I want to ensure the next generation gets to hear from a wide variety of people when it comes to the subject of careers. Historically careers focused on traditional roles that existed and I wanted

to make sure that students who weren’t quite sure what they wanted to do yet, would get some reassurance that it’s okay. You don’t need to have all the answers straight away, but if you believe in yourself and are brave enough to try, great things will happen.

Q What’s your message for girls all over Yorkshire about the future ahead of them?

A I would say please don’t compare yourself to anyone else and don’t feel pressured or rushed to have everything figured out straight away. Be kind and a ord yourself the chance to try new things and work out your strengths and your passions and most of all don’t be afraid to fail.

SOPHIE BROWNING

SEASONAL ASSISTANT BRAND MANAGER FOR CONFECTIONERY AT NESTLÉ

Q How would you sum up your time at Wakefield Girls?

A I joined Wakefield Girls in Year 4 and stayed until Year 11. I enjoyed my time at the school, mainly getting involved with school productions and events surrounding drama and the arts. One distinct memory was summer on the quad with all my friends, when the ice cream man would come to visit each Friday. I had many memorable times at school.

Q Would you say a particular teacher or something you enjoyed at school inspired your career path?

A My career path hasn’t been entirely straight forward. At school I was really passionate about drama and theatre studies, with a plan to go into television or drama school. For my A-level studies, I continued with drama but also picked up psychology and economics, which is where my love of business appeared. What I would say about school is that they always encouraged me to do what I loved, which gave me the motivation to keep going. I was really confused for a few years on what exactly I could see myself doing in my career, but the support from school allowed me to explore many di erent pathways.

Q Tell us about what you do today…

A My current role at Nestlé is Seasonal Assistant Brand Manager for Confectionery. I look after the Easter and Christmas formats within the business, which is super exciting for me. I get to create new products, design the artwork, work across the functions

to produce social media assets, look after the financial budgets and project manage many products across the portfolio.

Q Why were you keen to appear at the #empowHER event at Wakefield Girls?

A Being an old girl of the school, I really wanted to get involved to create awareness around alternative routes after school. It’s not easy growing up and going to school because society still expects you to know exactly what your career path looks like based on what GCSEs and A-level subjects you choose. When I was growing up, I thought my only option was to go to university, which I soon decided wasn’t for me and I didn’t really know what the other options were at the time. I want to give the children at the event the motivation and confidence to do what they want to do and what they feel is best for their future.

Q What’s your message for girls all over Yorkshire about the future ahead of them?

A Don’t worry about what your whole future holds. Focus on the present and find exactly what you’re passionate about. Identify those strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage as it will definitely support you going forward. It’s ok not to know what you want to do, there is plenty of time for that!

Time to give

On 7 July pupils aged from 4 to 18 at Sheffield High School for Girls stepped back from their usual timetable of lessons, clubs and sports and, instead, took part in a number of activities and listened to guest speakers on the topics of philanthropy, giving and service to the community.

Pupils were involved in sessions covering a wide range of topics, tailored for the ages in each year group. Girls in the Infant School learnt about food banks, and considered different ways to spread positivity through art, whilst the Juniors completed a project to design a future charity event and worked on developing links with local residential homes. Senior School pupils learnt about animal welfare at Heeley City Farm, considered social responsibility and legacy with the Royal British Legion, and took part in a food waste solutions project. sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

The development of a strong grassroots culture serves as the foundation for long-term sporting success at all levels. A prime example of this can be seen in the recent triumph of Aysgarth School, who clinched the Under 12 Bunbury Cup to become Yorkshire County Champions in July. The success of Aysgarth School in the face of stiff competition from 64 participating schools across the sector underscores the importance of nurturing and fostering a robust grassroots culture. Such a culture provides young athletes with the necessary skills, passion, and determination to excel in their chosen sports. Moreover, participation in grassroots sports fosters values such as teamwork, discipline, resilience and fair play, which extend far beyond the sporting arena and into other aspects of life. aysgarthschool.com

Yorkshire BEES

There’s something buzzing at High Corn Mill, Skipton

Skipton’s medieval High Corn Mill is at the centre of a new initiative to re-establish a rare breed of Yorkshire bees in the Wharfe and Nidderdale valleys.

Landlord Andrew Mear, who has long run his West Yorkshire property portfolio with the environment in mind, is joining forces with Harry Brow of BespokeBees of Greenwood Apiary in Addingham. Two hives have just been installed at the historic mill, with a view to increasing the number of near native Yorkshire Black Bees in the area, increasing local pollination rates and providing an exclusive local honey.

Harry himself first became inspired by bees when he was working in Brisbane, Australia in 2017 and spent part of his time helping out on a bee farm. He returned with a passion to save local strains of endangered species, taking a bee-centred management approach which aims to protect the natural cycle of the honeybee, enabling a healthy colony to produce a small batch of raw, natural honey – straight from hive to jar. He now focuses on providing geographically isolated beehives to locations around the Wharfe and Nidderdale valleys, including the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hives in the walled garden at Bolton Abbey.

Harry says: “Andrew approached me when he heard of the sustainable approach I take to beekeeping, which doesn’t go down the traditional route. I don’t use any treatments or chemicals and allow the bees to live freely and swarm in natural cycles. High Corn Mill’s bees will never be fed sugar syrup or bakers fondant and we wouldn’t dream of marking Queens or clipping their wings. It’s a less profitable way of managing bees, but far more conducive to re-establishing the strain around the area.

“We've created a small apiary by the side of the mill near the old waterwheel to house the bees – an endangered strain we can trace back in the valley for over 75 years,” he continues. “I like to think of the

way we work as the ‘rewilding’ approach to bee keeping and it works perfectly with the ethos of High Corn Mill, which has become something of a wellbeing hub in the area. The aim is to spread the genetic strain of these rare bees across the area.

“The honey they produce will be unique as they will collect from a wide variety of local botanicals – everything from hawthorn and horse chestnut to raspberry, blackberry, dandelion, and cross-leaved heather,” he adds.

“We anticipate that they will produce around 40kg of honey a year, half of which will remain in the hives to nourish the bees and the other half – a Skipton woodland honey – will go on sale at the mill, probably from next year. I’ll be supplying the mill with honey from my 35-hive apiary, so visitors to the mill will be able to get a taste of what’s to come.”
