Work to continue on two passenger underpasses at Amsterdam Zuid

The Brittenpassage, the new passenger underpass

After the major work that was completed in July and August 2022, the modernization and expansion of Amsterdam Zuid station continues to make rapid progress. We will now continue working on the new Brittenpassage, as well as on the existing Minervapassage. Passengers and local residents will notice the effects of this. 10

Mobility policy in Amsterdam:

LET RESIDENTS HAVE A SAY Since I myself became attuned to the mobility challenges facing different segments of Amsterdam’s population, there has been an overall shift in awareness. In recent months, regional NS staff strikes grounded train services across the Netherlands. In October, bus drivers walked out in large parts of the country. Transit workers are demanding a better collective labour agreement and protesting the ‘dismantling of public transport’.

John Leerdam is a Dutch film and theater director and former politician. He was a member of the parlement for the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) from 2003 to 2012.

The issue upsetting large swathes of the public is not so much environmental problems, but the high price of parking and transport, at rates that have most people crying bloody murder. Taking this into consideration, taking the bicycle seems to be the only reasonable option. It strikes me that each district of this city has its own history and dynamics regarding mobility. However, the need for a new vision on mobility is visible in the entire city. Disincentive policies for car use in some parts of Amsterdam have definitely not done their job. In fact, I suspect there has even been a rise in care use. Wherever affluence grows, people instantly start buying vehicles like cars. This is especially visible in Amsterdam-Zuid, Zuidas and central Amsterdam, where – in contrast to other city districts – more cars seem to be electric. If we want a mobility system that fully serves the city’s inhabitants, we need to start early on, in school. Make mobility and climate part of the curriculum, and explore alternate and diverse forms of mobility. That way, you make it a policy issue that intrigues and challenges. Public policy should not have a punitive effect on the city’s inhabitants. That is what parking policy feels like to people living in some districts right now. Let residents have a say. Show them the future is theirs, and ours. Make policy not just for the people, but of the people.

Hello People

HELLO PEOPLE

GOT A MINUTE? In Zuidas, all forms of transport converge. Trains continually come and go from all corners of the country and beyond, the metro offers a straight shot to the city centre and, for the athletically-minded, the ship-shape bike paths are an absolute joy. We wanted to find out: how do people in Zuidas prefer to get around? Have sustainability considerations changed travel patterns in recent years? And what are employers doing to facilitate that?

Anastasia Liskina “The way I travel hasn’t changed over the past ten years. It’s no different than before: I usually take my bike to work, but sometimes, when it’s too rainy, I go by tram or train. I live in Amsterdam Oost, near Oosterpark, so it’s only about 25 minutes by bike. My employer does provide compensation for public transport on OV card transactions. I know some employers provide money to buy a new electric bike, but unfortunately mine doesn’t. But that’s okay, I am pretty happy with my situation as it is!”

16

Hello People

Dook Hasselman “I take the intercity train from Utrecht Centraal, which gets me here in exactly 22 minutes, so that’s excellent. Plus, I live on the Oudegracht and can drop my bike in the underground parking garage at the station. So I can’t complain. I’ve actually always used public transport. A car is very expensive, and I don’t even have the space to park it. But it’s not really a big deal – I work at Walters People and we get a good public transport reimbursement. We also have cars parked here which we can use to visit clients if needed, and I think most of them are even electric.”

Ivan Fabrychnov “Walking is a great way to start the day, and I just happen to live very close by, near Gelderlandplein. I work in the WTC and really enjoy the ten-minute walk to and from work every day. However, I must say that public transport in the Netherlands is amazing! There’s so much to choose from: trains, subways, buses, trams... You can explore the entire country without ever taking the car. I am originally from Ukraine and have lived in a few big cities around the country, but public transport isn’t nearly as good as it is here. I used to travel to work on my motorcycle, but unfortunately I had to leave it behind when I came here in late January this year. I might look into getting a new one here though!”

Nathalie Rock “I bike to work every day because I literally live around the corner from here. From Oud-Zuid it is just over five minutes by bike. Before, at my old job, I took the metro a lot. But I prefer this! I’ve never actually looked into whether my employer does anything to encourage sustainable mobility, because I don’t need it. It’s a coincidence that I wound up living so close to my job, but it suits me just fine. My plan is to from now on never live more than twenty minutes from work. I’ve had to travel an hour or hour and a half in the past, and that really wears you down. This is ideal.”

Zuidas Home Tour

ZUIDAS HOME TOUR

“Even after the darkest night, we will see the sun in the morning” On February 24th this year, Ukraine found itself at war with Russia. Though it is a moment no one will soon forget, for those who were and still are living in the Eastern European country, it is a horrific day that will remain forever etched in their memories. Many had no choice but to flee their homes. Among them was Elena Isiuk, who left behind her job, her family and her native country. She found a place to stay in the former Holiday Inn on Boelelaan, which has served as a refugee shelter since March, thanks to Leger des Heils, De Regenboog Groep en HVO-Querido. Though deeply grateful for the safe haven, Elena hopes to be able to return home soon. Name

“When my wife and kids started about an EV, it became a no-brainer” Accenture takes its sustainability targets very seriously. By 2025, the company intends to have reduced its carbon emissions by at least 60% relative to 2019. Already, they are at 75% of that target, thanks to ongoing investments in electric vehicles, a mobility budget and a shift towards virtual meetings. Roy Ikink, managing director and lead of Accenture Technology in the Netherlands, drives a fully electric BMW iX50. “When my lease ended two years ago, I’d been thinking for a while that I didn’t want another traditional petrol car. And then when my wife and kids started about an EV as well, it became a no-brainer. As soon as the first BMW models with a serious range arrived in Van Poelgeest’s Amsterdam showroom, I was sold.” 38

Don’t let unused office space cost you Saving money starts with good insights Colliers Benchbase Colliers is market leader in carrying out real estate and facility benchmarks in Europe. Our database, the Colliers Benchbase®, is the largest and most reliable real estate and facility management database in Europe. The Benchbase® provides insights at both Dutch and European level into whether the real estate, facility costs and quality of your building(s) or organization are in line with the market. With our benchmark, we look at the entire facility performance and the use of space. In current times of high inflation rates and transition to hybrid working, the benchmark can be of great value to your organisation. CO2 REDUCTION DECREE FOR EMPLOYEE BUSINESS TRAVEL AND COMMUTING Effective 1st of July 2023, employers with 100 or more employees will be required by law to record and report the total number of kilometres employees travel between home and work and on business trips. Originally slated to take effect on the 1st of January 2023, implementation of the new rule was recently delayed by six months. Employers will consequently only be required to report business and commuting travel data over the second half of 2023. The 2030 emissions reduction target (of one megaton CO2) is unchanged.

Medy van der Laan, president of the Dutch Banking Association (NVB):

“SUSTAINABILITY PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN WHY I USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT” Since her appointment last year as president of the Dutch Banking Association (NVB), Medy van der Laan travels a lot by train between her hometown of Apeldoorn and her office in Amsterdam South. After all, it can be a very relaxed way of getting around and also getting work done. Her way of travelling fits in perfectly with the organization’s mobility policy, as the NVB actively looks at how their employees want to commute and how to facilitate them in their wishes – while at the same time stimulating sustainable forms of travel.

BUSINESS TRAVEL AND KILOMETRE ALLOWANCE TO RISE FROM 2023 The maximum tax-free allowance for business travel expenses has long been fixed at €0.19 per kilometre. This is set to change. The untaxed reimbursement for travel costs is going up to €0.21 per kilometre as from 2023, and to €0.23 in 2024. Given these changes, what do business owners and/or employers need to know about travel costs and tax? Will you have to pay employees more to cover the costs of business trips? We get you up to speed below.

Hello You

HELLO YOU

ART WALK @ Amstelpark

The rain suits and wellies could be dusted off, because on one of the first rainy afternoons this autumn, the Hello Zuidas foundation organized an art walk through the Amstelpark in collaboration with art collective Zone2Source. This walk, known as the Shadowfloriade, led the participants past the various beautiful works of art that are scattered throughout the park – and of course ended with a celebratory drink in a hidden greenhouse in the centre of the park.

PHOTO EXHIBITION STREETS OF THE WORLD MOVES TO ZUIDPLEIN During the construction work on Zuidasdok this summer, the longest photo exhibition in the world, ‘Streets of the World’ by photographer Jeroen Swolfs, has been moved from the Arnold Schönberglaan to the other side of the railway. The photos of streets from countries all over the world are now more spacious and more visible. Go and see it, it is and remains very worthwhile!

Wear them with pride Baker Mckenzie recently dropped their very own sustainable Pride socks, which showcase how Inclusion and Diversity is lived out in their global offices, their commitment to the topic and their support for the LGBTIQ+ community. The pair went viral around the world, sparked a great discussion about I&D within the company and their customers and have even been nominated for Workplace Pride’s Leadership Awards in the category Best Media Representation. It’s great to see Zuidas’ very own Pride socks taking on the world!

Twenty-four national teams competed during the City Row Race! The 5th edition of the City Row Race was set for the 9th of October this year. Twenty-four national teams competed in the Pilot Gig race for a ranking in the Dutch Championships. First introduced in 1837, the Pilot Gig remains the fastest seaworthy rowing boat ever built. It was a very pleasant but also sporty and fanatical Gig rowing competition of two heats of 3KM on the Nieuwe Meer. And on top of that even the weather gods were kind to us as well. Next year’s race will be in October! For more information or a trial lesson Gig-rowing see, wvdeschinkel.nl.

A GREAT RACE FOR A GREAT CAUSE The fifth edition of the Zuidas Businessride this past September was a huge success! Almost ninety participants, wonderful weather and many happy faces all contributed to the great day – but most importantly, we raised €16.258,- for the St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Haïti.

Did you know that Zuidas has a safe space for victims of sexual violence? A little over a year ago, non-profit organization The Safe Space Club moved to Zuidas. This survivor-led organization combines their knowledge with their experiential expertise and aims to guide victims of sexual violence in processing their trauma. Additionally, The Safe Space Club advises companies on intervention and prevention of sexually transgressive behavior in the workplace. Know that you are always welcome in their safe space if you need someone to talk to or if you are seeking advice.

Meet The...

Zuidas is best known as Amsterdam’s business district, chock-a-block with skyscrapers and scores of offices. More recently, however, the district has grown into a veritable urban neighbourhood and a great place to live and hang out. Many businesses have also discovered Zuidas, and with their arrival, the district has added a wide range of services and amenities, including shops, schools, fitness centres and places to drink and dine. Powering each of these establishments are entrepreneurs and employees with their own special, personal stories that we’re eager to share with you.
