want to take the time to say THANK YOU for your support of the 20th Force Support Squadron! I cannot believe my command tour will end in July and my family and I will be heading to our next assignment. This has been a phenomenal tour and each of you have played a major role in making this such a memorable adventure. Thank you for embracing our mission and giving us the opportunity to work with and serve you. Whether you attend one of our events, eat at one of our facilities, check out a library book, or get a new identification card, we appreciate everything you do to help us achieve our goals, as well as the feedback you provide to help us improve. I still have a few months left in the squadron, so I look forward to interacting with all of you when I am out and about. I would also ask that you reach out if there is something you would like for us to do in the near future. I say this because the 20th Force Support Squadron is made up of an awesome staff of professionals that are ready to act on our customer’s needs. Thank you again for being an integral part of our squadron because we absolutely would not exist without you. You are all amazing, and hopefully we helped make your time at Shaw AFB enjoyable!

A lpha War r i or ’s C o m i n g t o S h aw Alpha Warrior Competition & Celebrity Tour August 1 & 2 | FREE | Time: TBA Alpha Warrior Battle Rigs and Battle Stations provide a new, exciting way for Airmen to work out, build unit cohesion and promote a sense of community with fellow Airmen and families. Meet Brent Steffensen, Karsten Williams, Kacy Catanzaro, or Barclay Stockett from NBC’s “America Ninja Warrior,” who use this system to train for their competitions! After meeting the pros, challenge yourself and your fellow Airmen to beat your best time on the rig. For more info stop by the Fitness Center or call 895-2789.
Learn Alpha Warrior & Succeed Alpha Warrior is a new type of technical obstacle course that will push you in ways that you’ve never been pushed before. This is not your mundane challenge. Alpha Warrior tests your strength, core, fitness, and fortitude - pushing your body and mind to its physical and mental limit. The objective is to complete each obstacle on the course and finish with a 100% completion rate to become a Proven Alpha Warrior. Obstacles, such as the cliffhanger, devil steps and rope climb, challenge the competitors. Each task is about agility, grip strength, and lots of upper body and core strength. To prepare for such challenges takes dedication. At the elite level, the Alpha Warrior course designers suggest preparing 3 months in advance. Additionally, centering on high-intensity aerobics, including pull-ups, leg-lifts, jumps and squats. Body weight circuit training exercises, using just your own body weight, in a circuit that really gets the heart rate up has proven to be the most successful workout strategy. In August when the Alpha Warrior Battle Rig lands at Shaw, participants will compete in the regional challenge with an opportunity to move on to the finals November 11 in San Antonio, TX. The final competition will include 25 men and women including one guaranteed regional winner. After the local event, the Battle Rig will remain at Shaw AFB in support of comprehensive Airman fitness.

The EDC program, open to Active duty, Air National Guard (in activated status), Air Force Reserves (in activated status), and DoD civilians assigned to or working on the installation; is designed to assist families when weekly parental workloads, due to extended duty hours, exceed the normal operating hours of their full-time childcare provider. Families must be purchasing full time child care services. In addition no one else in the household can be available to provide care. Childcare is provided for non-traditional hours, i.e., evenings and weekends, outside of the normal operating hours of the CDC or School Age program. EDC can be used for on-base mission related duty, extended duty days, temporary shift changes, rapid mobilization, deployment, and short notice TDYs.
Supplemental Child Care Active duty, Air National Guard (in activated status), Air Force Reserves (in activated status), and DoD civilians assigned to or working on the installation can utilize this program for child care services when weekly workloads exceed their typical 50-hour childcare arrangements on a regular basis. Families must be purchasing full time child care services. There must also not be anyone else in the household available to provide child care.
AFAS Child Care for PCS Air Force Aid Society PCS program is designed to help relieve some of the stress felt by families in the process of a PCS move. AFAS PCS provides 20 hours of child care per child at both the departing and inbound base. Families may use the childcare 60 days before the family’s departure from a base, and 60 days after arriving at the new installation. This program is open to all ranks unless there is a shortage of childcare providers at the base in which case priority would be given to junior ranking personnel. 15 Palmetto Dr. | 895-1212 | Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Build Your Post-Military Career
Civilian tuition assistance increases to $1M The Air Force has received an additional $400,000, for a total of $1 million, for its 2017 civilian tuition assistance program (CTAP), and all permanent, full-time appropriated fund employees, including those in wage-grade positions, are now eligible to participate. Employees are required to have a current acceptable performance appraisal on file and are eligible whether or not they occupy a centrally managed position. New for 2017, the standard TA rates have increased to 75 percent of the cost of tuition, not to exceed $250 per semester hour versus $187.50. The new fiscal year limit increases by $1,000 in 2017, up to a maximum of $4,500. Additional changes for CTAP include TA allowed for one course at any given time. Course start and finish dates cannot overlap. TA is available for courses offered by a fully accredited academic institution but cannot be used for courses leading to a second degree of the same level already attained, such as a second bachelor or master’s degree; nor is TA available for doctorate-level course work. The Spratt education center can provide you the most current civilian tuition assistance information and details on how you can take full advantage of this new funding. Our office is located at 398 Shaw Drive. You may also reach us by calling 803-895-1838. 25
