DIY Auto shop... NOW OPEN Written by: A1C Kathryn R.C. Reaves & 20th FSS Marketing 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
Need to change the oil in your car or replace the brake pads but don’t have the proper space at home? We’ve got you covered! The 20th Force Support Squadron Do It Yourself Auto Repair Center is now open! The shop, located at 311 Avocent Street, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, reopened to allow Team Shaw members a safe and authorized location to perform vehicle maintenance in place of parking lots or streets. The DIY Auto Repair Shop is designed to promote maintenance on vehicles by those who are knowledgeable in the type of maintenance they will be performing. Those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity must sign a waiver recognizing the potential hazards, that they are physically capable of performing the task, and agree to undertake the risks involved.
lunch Break...
Come into shaw lanes March 12-16 and get our st. patrick’s day special! Menu includes cabbage, corned beef, parsley potatoes, a roll and drink for only $7.50! Take your luck to a new level for $1.50!
Paula Rupp, 20th FSS Arts and Crafts Center director, said individuals requested the project during a town hall and a later survey found the majority of participants wanted the facility. Service members, retirees and family members may use one of the repair shop’s three bays as a work space, but they must bring their own tools, cleaning materials, and a helping hand. “We have a two-person policy for safety,” said Bobby Cartrett, 20th FSS community services flight chief. “Both people don’t have to work on the car. If someone wants to take their spouse, friend or whoever, they can do that, but there has to be a second person there for safety reasons.” After using the work area, customers are required to clean and remove all materials from the bay to make a proper and safe work area for the next customer. Vehicles, parts, and tools may not remain in the work area overnight. “Anything you take off the car, you must take with you,” said Cartrett. “It’s an empty bay right now and it needs to be an empty bay when you leave, and we’re going to hold customers responsible for that.” The DIY Auto Repair Shop is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Interested individuals may contact the 20th FSS Arts and Crafts Center located at 520 Marco Ave to check out the key and sign waivers Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the key can be picked up at Outdoor Rec, located at 1 FamCamp Drive. All work must be completed before 4:15 p.m. and the gate to the shop locked at 4:30 p.m. The key must be returned to the same location it was issued from by 4:45 p.m.
