LIFEGUARDS Trained To Keep You Safe At Woodland Pool

By Tarsha Storey, 20th FW Public Affairs & Derrick Rhems, 20th FSS Marketing He stepped up on the diving board, jumped in the air, landed in the water, and settled on the bottom of the pool. In one second, a typical day at the pool quickly became a rush to save the life of a 9-year-old boy. Even though this event happened in the mid-90s, the 20th Force Support Squadron lifeguards are aware this event could repeat itself at anytime. This is why the lifeguards’ training is very important, said Tim Godwin, 20th FSS pool supervisor. Mr. Godwin said each lifeguard at Shaw is required to have at least 40 hours of training prior to working for the pool. This training consists of first aid, CPR, and many types of

rescue skills. They must be at least 15 years of age, be able to swim 500 yards continuously, and be able to tread water for up to two minutes. The lifeguards are also required to undergo additional training throughout the summer to ensure they are able to rescue anyone at anytime. Every third week of the month, they conduct various types of training such as preventative training, rescue training, response time training, and accident training. Another aspect of being a lifeguard is teaching swimming lessons. Lessons are Red Cross certified and are in two week increments. Sign up is available on a first come, first served basis. The cost is $70 per child. To sign up for lessons starting July 5 or July 24 visit the Woodland Pool located next to Shaw Chapel.

Summer Reading Facts

Young people experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Libraries are part of the solution. To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. Summer Reading Club reminds kids that reading is for fun—as well as for learning. There’s so much to see, so much to do at your library! There’s no better place to take your kids. The library is a place to learn, read, and have fun…a place the whole family can enjoy. In fact, more than 82 million children attend library programs every year. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

Check out all our FREE ongoing events!

11 a.m. - Story Time for Little Ones

Parents of children enrolled in the public library summer reading program reported that their children spent more time reading over the summer, read more books, were well prepared for school in the fall, and read more confidently.

The amount of time children spend reading outside of school is linked to gains in reading achievement. Numerous studies show that access to books and magazines is directly related to higher reading achievement.
