Manager’s Corner April 1, 2022 Dear TGO Community, Flowers are in bloom throughout TGO. Happy April 1st everyone! Today is April Fool’s Day, so don’t miss this perfect opportunity to play a prank on your family or friends without worrying about them getting mad at you. This is also the time of year when many TGO residents are preparing their migration north. Please plan to maintain your property while you are away. Services are available to watch your Florida home and keep the weeds out of your gardens. I am told that a growing number of TGO residents will extend their stay at TGO this year. Those who remain in the community this summer will appreciate your efforts to care for your vacant property. Let’s all do our part to maintain our curb appeal! Covid-19 has changed the way people shop. Online shopping is now booming, and this trend has exploded the number of packages our TGO Mail Center handles daily. Have you thanked your TGO Mail Center team lately? Kathy and her team (Nancy, Pat, Tacy and Debbie) work very hard to service over 1400 mailboxes every day. They receive and handle all packages that are too large for the parcel lockers outside. These packages are unloaded into the Mail Center at one time. You probably get a notice to your phone or email that your package has arrived from its carrier, but please be patient as the mail center needs a little time to sort it, mark it, and put a notice in your mailbox. Our mail center team processed a record 3200 packages in February, which is more than the Christmas rush! They handle all these packages along with servicing customers at the counter, putting mail in your mailboxes, answering phones and so much more. Kathy and team are exceptional multi-taskers! Chairman Tom Wheir wrote about unauthorized cutting on CSA property in his Chairman’s Notes last week. I will cover this topic too, because recently some unauthorized cutting on CSA property caused unnecessary discord between neighbors. Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” Please know your property lines. I recognize that some CSA land behind your home may be unappealing, but the fact remains that you must have permission to cut vegetation beyond your property line. Moving forward and for tracking purposes, you must now display an approved ARC permit if you wish to cut vegetation on CSA land behind your home. This will help us determine property lines. The permit will include my signature, and a copy of the permit will be placed in you ARC file for documentation purposes. Doggie World is a busy gathering place for friends with two and four legs. Your CSA Board of Directors recently approved the extension of specific small and large dog hours from seasonal to year-round. This is a good opportunity to remind dog owners to please review the Doggie World Rules brochure. This brochure is posted at Doggie World and available also in the CSA office. Dog owners must watch and remain responsible for their dogs at all times. No food or drinks may be brought into doggie world with the exception of small dog treats. Thank you all for keeping Doggie World a top-notch amenity at TGO. By now you may know that TGO will conduct a wildfire evacuation exercise on Friday, April 8. There is no action required or expected from our residents. This is simply a test of our readiness, emergency communications and cooperation with local emergency authorities in the event of a fast-moving wildfire threat. If this was a real emergency, you would receive instructions via our mass communication system. Sincerely, Billy Specht CSA Manager

2022-2023 Concert Series Steve Solomon - Broadway Comedian - March 2, 2023

Steve has taken the art of impersonation, mimicry and honed it into a science. He masterfully weaves dialects and crazy characters into his stories. These tales take on a life of their own as Steve recounts memorable moments from his past and makes hysterical observations of the things we all relate to happening around us today! A native of Brooklyn, Steve grew up in the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician. As the class clown and as a very authentic sounding Chinese restaurant delivery boy, Steve learned early how to use his gift for imitating accents to his advantage. His three-time award winning “My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy” has met with rave reviews and great audience acclaim throughout the country. It became one of the longest running one-man shows in Broadway history.

New York Bee Gees Tribute Show - March 23, 2023

The New York Bee Gees Tribute Show is comprised of some of Long Island, New York’s most versatile and exceptionally talented players. The band includes present or former members of well known, world renown acts including Happy Together Tour, Meatloaf, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Herman’s Hermits, Enrique Iglesias and more. Based in New York, the show has played to sell-out shows in the city. B.B. King NYC wrote, “The NY Bee Gees Tribute Show presents the most extravagant Bee Gees show a fan can experience.” The band offers all of the classic 70s disco hits from Stayin’ Alive to Night Fever while embracing their early works such as To Love Somebody, I’ve Got To Get A Message To You, and Massachusetts. The NY Bee Gees deliver songs from every decade of the Bee Gees catalog with a stunning production, powerful vocals and professional stage presence. As a bonus, Jessie Wagner will join the New YorkBee Gees to perform a great “Donna Summer Tribute!”

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting”. This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Pictures of Progress

Many Firewise Volunteers have done an incredible job of clearing out invasive plants and shaping the native plants along our nature trail. These volunteers conducted clearing on 19 different occasions this season, and logged over 466 volunteer hours, creating 82 large piles of debris to be hauled out by CSA. On this particular day, our CSA manager caught these people out working. From left to right - Tom Nelson, Bob Pinder, Ed Olefirowicz, Karri Olefirowicz, Betty Salter and Sharon Maloney. A special thank you goes out to Ed and Betty who are coordinating all of these efforts.

TGO Pickleball Club Basic Pickleball Rules Pickleball can be played as a singles or doubles game, the court and rules are the same for both. Scoring The game is normally played to 11 points and must be won by 2. You can only score a point while serving. The score should be said aloud before each serve with the serving team’s score stated first. In doubles both players on a team serve so the last number stated should be to identify which server is serving, e.g., 5 - 3 - 1 would mean the serving team is winning 5 to 3 and the server is the 1st server on the team, for the 2nd server it would be 5 - 3 - 2.

Jackie Lammardo & Bob DeFrancesco

Craig Gottschang

Senior Tournament Players - David Helms, Jim Connelly, John Comeau, Mark Brook, Mimi LeGault (Curtis), Chris McQuate, Carol Wagner, Karen Posey

The Serve The serve must be hit with an underhand swinging motion and the ball contacted below the waist. The server must be behind the baseline and serve into the opposite service box like in tennis. You only get one serve. If the ball is hit out of the court, into the net or into the no-volley zone (kitchen) it is a side out. The center line, side lines and baselines are considered in on a serve but if the ball lands on the no-volley line it is a side out. There are no longer any lets in pickleball. If the ball hits the net and goes in, it must be played by the receiving team. A new provisional rule allows for a “drop serve.” You can now drop the ball and hit it after the bounce while serving. You can drop the ball from any height but you can’t throw it with any force to bounce it. In doubles each player serves until a point is lost then the other team gets the serve. At the start of the game the team that serves first only gets 1 serve so the score starts at 0 - 0 - 2. The 2 means it is already the 2nd server. The 1st serve on each side is always from the right service box serving into the right service box on the other side. Double Bounce Rule When the ball is served the player on the receiving side must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. When the ball is returned to the serving side the ball must again bounce once before being hit. After the ball has bounced once on each side the ball can be hit without bouncing as long as you aren’t in the no-volley zone within 7 feet of the net. No Volley Zone The No-Volley Zone is the are within 7 feet of the net on each side. A player can not hit a ball if he is inside the No-Volley Zone unless the ball bounces first. If a ball hits a player in the No-Volley zone before bouncing, the point is lost. Once a ball bounces a player can hit the ball while inside the zone. If a player hits a ball while outside the No-Volley Zone and the momentum takes him/her into the zone, the point is lost. If your foot touches any part of the line you are considered inside the zone. You can reach over the line and hit a ball as long as your foot is behind the line. If a serve hits the No-Volley line the serving team loses the point.

TGO Pickleball Club Tidbit About Pickleball If you get no points in a game and therefore lose, it is referred to as being pickled. Pickleball Terms & Definitions Are you learning pickleball for the first time or are you brushing up on the game? Here’s a list of pickleball terms. Carry - Hitting the ball in such a way that it does not bounce away from the pickleball paddle but tends to be carried along on the face of the paddle during its forward motion. Cross-court - The court diagonally opposite your court. Dead Ball - Describes the pickleball ball after a fault is declared. Dink Shot - A soft shot intended to arc over the pickleball net and land within the non-volley zone.

Jose (Tony) Gonzales, Pasquale (Patrick) Nadon

Double Bounce - A ball that bounces more than once, on one side, before it is returned. Double Hit - One side hitting the pickleball ball twice before it is returned over net. Double hits may occur by one player or could involve both players on a team. Drop Shot - A groundstroke shot that falls short of the opponent’s position. Drop Shot Volley - A volley shot that is designed to “kill” the speed of the ball and return it short, near the net, to an opponent positioned at or near the baseline. Fault - Any action that stops play because of a rule violation. First Serve - To begin a new game, only one partner from the first serving side is allowed to serve. After the first fault, the serve switches to the opposing side. Groundstroke - Hitting the ball after one bounce. Half Volley - A groundstroke shot where the paddle contacts the ball immediately after it bounces from the court and before the ball rises to its potential height. Hinder - Any element or occurrence that affects play. Let - A serve that hits the net cord and lands in the service court. Let may also refer to a rally that must be replayed for any reason. Line Calls - If any part of the ball lands on the court lines, it is considered in (except in the case of the Non-Volley Line) Lob - A shot that returns the ball as high and deep as possible, forcing the opposing side back to the baseline. Non-Volley Zone (“The Kitchen”) - The section of court adjacent to the net. A player cannot volley a ball while standing within the non-volley zone. It includes all lines surrounding the zone.

Second Serve - A term used to describe the condition when a serving team begins the game or subsequently loses the first of its two allocated serves. Overhead Slam / Smash - A hard, overhand shot usually resulting from an opponent’s lob, high return, or high bounce. Passing Shot - A volley or groundstroke shot that is aimed at a distance from the player and is designed to prevent return of the ball. Rally - Continuous play after the serve and before a fault. Replays - Any rallies that are replayed for any reason without the awarding of a point or a side out. Service Court - The area on either side of the centerline, bounded by the non-volley line, the baseline, and the sideline. All lines are included in the service court except the non-volley line. Side Out - Declared after one side loses its service and other side is awarded service. Volley - Hitting the ball in the air, during a rally, before the ball has a chance to bounce onto the court.

Firewise Back Home

by Ed Brown

Before you depart TGO, take a critical look at your property here. Is the roof clear of dried pine needles and leaves? How about gutters and down spouts too? Is the “30-foot defensive zone” around your property clear of flammable palm fronds, fallen branches, leaves? Are trees in the zone clear of branches up to 8 feet off the ground? We’re talking about “ladder fuels” that can lead a fire to your roof line and the tree tops. Vines that climb your trees are in the same category and should be cut down. If these things have not been attended to, it might be wise to delay your departure, or hire a property maintenance professional to clean up to Firewise Standards. When you get back to your northern home, the same standards apply there, especially if you are in or near an Urban Wildland Interface (U.W.I), the zone where wildland and homes share common space. It’s just one more maintenance task that needs to be addressed If your northern home resides in this fire danger zone. Visit firewise.org for support and to learn more about Firewise Communities. A number of excellent pamphlets are available right here in TGO, to guide your further knowledge of this essential subject. Some of these include Wildfire Safety Tips, Defensible Space Guidelines, Prescribed Fire, How to Prepare Your Home for Wildfire, Prescribed Fire in the Urban Wildland Interface Firewise Landscaping, and many more essential titles. Find them here at the CSA Office, at the Nature Center or call Firewise Committee Members: Don Payne, Mike Lavery, Tim Graham, Ron Peoples or Ed Brown. You may also visit www. firewise.org to learn more about the Firewise Program and other Firewise communities (perhaps in your northern home area). Drive safely, be aware and especially now, be careful out there! We look forward to your safe return to The Great Outdoors in the Fall! YOUR Firewise Program is coordinated by the TGO Firewise Committee, which meets on the first Wedesday of each month, at 1:00 pm, at the CSA Conference room. All residents are welcome to attend.

Get Involved With The Happenings This publication is about our community and we would love to get you involved. If you have some photos from around the park - either nature or neighborhood activities, we’d like to see them. Simply email them to: happenings@tgocsa.com with a brief description. There’s no guarantee but they might make it into a future issue.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

The ALS Fundraiser provided some great raffle prises including this beautiful quilt won by Linda Lasa, an ALS hoodie won by Kathie Smith and Bev Houghton won the Swedish Weave blanket. Dave and Bev Restey volunteered to man the 14th (Free Wine) hole of the Can-Am golf Tournament. What a surprise! What to do on a stormy Saturday? Paint & Create with Cyndi McDougall who led a group of 15 painters in creating some beautiful abstract art. The participants had a great time, stayed dry, and went home with some awesome artwork. Pam Phillips shows off her unique “chain” art. Pat Matroniano (host), Bigfoot and Ray Kite were flipping burgers for the annual Fawn Trail Cookout.

48

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors Pet Corner

Trimmers celebrated their 25 year anniversary with a taco and margarita party. Jennifer Stevenson, owner, is flanked by Brenda Whitman and Pat Morris on her right and Betty Sullivan and Sowandy on her left. This is Nashville, the collie. He will be 2 this April 16th! His favorite activity is playing tug or sitting outside with a stick! Nashville’s human is Hayli Britch. Thanks for the great response, we had several entries, so we placed all the names in a hat and drew out Nashville this time. All other entries go back into the hat for future issues - so please keep sending your pet’s photos to happenings@tgocsa.com.

WANTED Here’s a picture of the “Baytree Babes” luncheon for St. Patrick’s Day. Merle Stevens and Judy Gibson organized it, and it was great fun. The service and food at the Blue Heron were fantastic.

YOUR TRAVEL PHOTOS

Stay in touch with your friends at TGO this summer and send us some photos of your adventures. Include a brief discription of where you are and what you did and we’ll try to include it in The Happenings. With a very short life-cycle, the “gaitsquito” can only be seen on the first of April.

Email them to: Happenings@tgocsa.com

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ

Credits This guidebook has been developed by the TGO Firewise Advisory Committee. This committee is made up of TGO resident volunteers and reports to the TGO Board of Directors. Local organizations that act in an advisory role include: Brevard County Fire Rescue Department, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, City of Titusville FireRescue, Florida Forestry, and the St. Johns River Water Management District. These organizations provide education and policy actions that help protect TGO from wildfire threats such as participating in TGO emergency drills, providing guest speakers, and operating prescribed burns. Firewise Communities USA, is a voluntary National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) program to help neighbors in preparing and protecting their homes against the threat of wildfire. TGO is one of 1,500 recognized Firewise USA® communities from across the nation.

6/2020 Page | 3

Overview Fire is a natural part of most of our Florida ecosystems. It can maintain healthy natural environs or turn homes to ashes. There are wildfires every year, especially during our “dry” winter season. TGO is built within a Wildland / Urban Interface; the area where the edge of a community transitions or abuts into woodlands or grass prairie. In TGO we border both woodlands and grassland and often have large thunderstorms that can ignite those ecosystems.

Many wildland / urban interface homes are lost because of fires associated with the most vulnerable parts of a home, the roof and the area immediately surrounding the structure. Fire embers 6/2020 Page | 4

landing on or around the home or slow-moving fires contacting flammable portions of the structure are the two principle causes of a home being lost.

People who live within this potentially dangerous interface need to take precautions to protect their homes and RVs from fire. Since some preventative measures are too expensive or structurally unfeasible, we will focus on what we can do to minimize this serious threat to our community. This guide has been designed to serve our community as a resource for what we can do specifically for Preparation, Planning, and Evacuation in a worst-case scenario.

6/2020 Page | 5

Preparation There is not much that can be done about a home’s exterior construction without exorbitant costs, but a few simple actions may help save your structure. • Clean the roof and gutters on your home or RV. Dried leaves and pine needles are perfect materials to catch on fire quickly. • Clean out flammable materials underneath your deck and RV. • Make sure there is no vegetation touching any structures. • Consider your out building construction type and what is stored in it. Think of combustibles inside that once ignited will make the fire go from small to explosive. LP tanks, gasoline, lawn chemicals, or fertilizers are all potential significant fire hazards. • Have your house number easily visible from the street so that emergency services can find you both during the day and night. • Keep 50-100 feet of hose readily available at a faucet away from the structure. • Have tools such as a shovel, rake, handsaw, bucket, and fire extinguisher easily assessable.

6/2020 Page | 6

Your Landscaping: Lean, Clean, and Green The goal of Firewise landscaping is to create and maintain a minimum of a 30-foot safety zone around the home or RV. This “defensible space” safety zone increases the likelihood that a home or RV will survive a wildfire, even in the absence of firefighters. Remember, that you must have written permission to remove any living shrubs or trees beyond your property line. Contact CSA if you have questions about removal and consult the Architectural Review Board before making landscape changes. 6/2020 Page | 7

This 30-foot defensible space does not need to be devoid of shrubs and trees, but should be wisely landscaped with plants known to be less-flammable, separated by walkways and grassed areas. The defensible space breaks up the continuity of any vegetation that might otherwise bring fire from adjacent wildlands to the structure. This space also provides room for firefighters to safely work to defend a structure. • Defensible space should extend 30 feet outward from the home or RV. • Remove any “ladder fuels”. Ladder fuels are vines and shrubs that can carry a ground fire up into the treetops. • Remove downed branches, dead palm fronds, and pine needles to the curb for CSA pickup. • Prune tree limbs so the lowest branches are more than 6 to 10 feet from the ground. • Remove large groupings of highly flammable plants especially if the plants are close to the home or RV, adjacent to decks or porches, or under eaves or overhangs. See the tables on the next page for comparisons of plant flammability. • Use lava stone or coarse gravel around any shrubbery next to the structure instead of flammable mulch like bark or wood chips.

Planning Have an evacuation bag or box of your most important items ready to “grab and go”. Consider including cash, copies of important documents, financial account list, phone charger cords, phone numbers (if your phone fails), medications, basic first aid kit, flashlight, drinking water, food, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, pet carrier/leash/food, and any easily transported irreplaceable family mementoes. Test yourself, you have just received the notice that you have 15 minutes to leave… What do you take and how fast can you assemble those items? Perform an annual review of your insurance.

Evacuation In the event, despite our efforts to contain a wildfire, there may come a time when we must evacuate a portion or all of TGO. Brevard County Law enforcement will make that decision and mandate how and when the evacuation will take place. Due to our narrow, winding roads and significant number of residents, any evacuation from TGO will be challenging. In addition, our main two-lane road in and out of TGO may not be 6/2020 Page | 10

available to us for evacuation due to the arrival of emergency personnel and their equipment. TGO’s designated Emergency Exit is via the Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility (see map next page). This exit will NOT support heavy or long vehicles. Do not plan to use your RV as an evacuation vehicle. Look at the map and follow the arrows for your evacuation route unless otherwise directed by emergency personnel.
