The New Blue Heron Menu
It’s here... the new Blue Heron Restaurant menu, and judging by the reviews, it has been very well received. Both Karan Begy, the Blue Heron Manager, and head chef, Ace French, have put together a great selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees. Some of the TGO favorites are still there, but Ace has added quite a few of his specialty items including his signature seafood plates. There is also a Tuesday Pasta Bar and a Saturday Prime Rib special added to the weekly schedule. For a message from Ace, see page 7. The new menus are in the centerfold.
John Roberts - One of TGO’s Treasures TGO has a lot of great volunteers. They are the backbone of our resort, helping to make sure our grounds, trails and lakes are kept in operating condition. Meet John Roberts, he’s been voluteering here for over 25 years making sure our lakes are taken care of and our fish are restocked each year. It’s an important role that helps keep a balance between nature and man. Not only do our local fishermen enjoy the catch and release program avilable here in TGO, but proper lake maintenance is important for our local animal life as well. Continued on page 16
SNAP-SHOT: Doug Jensen Another insight by Jim Brubaker that showcases our local photographers. If you are a fan of the CBS Sunday Morning program, then you are probably familiar with Doug Jensen’s work. Doug is actually a world-class videographer and his most recent CBS project included the filming of our Great Horned Owls on Addison Way. Doug and his wife Sally split their time between New England and TGO, where they both enjoy volunteer work within our community. Occassionaly, you can catch Doug photographing on our Nature Trail, and if you do, stop and chat him up. Continued on page 46

Manager’s Corner May 13, 2022 Dear TGO Community, I meet with The Happenings editors Tim and Cindy Clark to preview each issue prior to publishing. I’m always excited to read the new cover stories and feature articles about volunteers and employees that make TGO such a special place. These special stories happen because Cindy and Tim take the extra time to research, write, conduct interviews, take photos and go above and beyond the scope of their editor responsibilities. I am grateful for the extra time and attention placed into this and every issue. TruGreen techs and trucks return to our community next week to spray all lawns on Tuesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 17. This is a four-inone spray treatment which includes a 16-0-8 slow-release liquid fertilizer, an insecticide for lawn destroying insects such as chinch bugs and grubs, and two different herbicides for sedge weed control and broadleaf weed control. The 2021 external audit of our financials is now complete and in the hands of our CSA board of directors for their review. This audit was conducted by an outside accounting firm specializing in HOAs. Just following the CSA Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 18, I will post this audit to our password-protected website, tgocsa.org, for our owners to view. This and all previous years’ audits are available after entering your username and password. I invite you to take some time to review the audit, and email me or your board members if you have any questions. The Nature Trail improvement project for 2022 is completed. I am hearing comments that the project is a big improvement as we addressed most of the trouble areas and eliminated the worst potholes and wash-boarded areas, but maintained the “rustic” feel of a nature trail. Although the major work is now completed, CSA will continue to monitor and adjust the trail as we enter the rainy season to see how our improvements weather the storms. A big thank you is owed to CSA Board Member Matt Willey and the nature trail committee who steered this project and provided feedback along the way. The City of Cocoa provides our community with our potable water. This issue of The Happenings contains a report from the City of Cocoa sharing their plans to begin a treatment of their potable water with Cloramine soon and for a short period of time. Please read the article on page 15 for more information, and if you’re sensitive to treatments in your water, you may want to drink bottled water during this period. We are making steady progress on the renovation of our CSA offices and former Jukebox Café space. Soon the CSA office team and I will play some ‘musical chairs’ as we move around to allow the renovation of our existing office space. In order to clean up our offices and prepare for these moves, I will be closing the CSA office to foot traffic starting on Monday, May 23, for a short period of time. The office will be open and operating, but please, you will need to contact us by phone or email during that week. A sign will be posted on the CSA office door. Finally, on a personal note, I recently survived the latest variant of Covid-19, which my doctor confirmed was the Omicron variant. My bout with Covid included five days of mild headaches and some cold symptoms. The worst part was isolating myself from my family and work colleagues, but I used this time to do some reading, some must-see TV watching, and some resting. This experience reminded me that we are living in different times and must continue to stay vigilant and protect ourselves. My best wishes to all of you, for health and happiness, as we enter into the summer season. Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

Meet George Mattocks
If you’re an avid golfer and play on Tuesdays and Thursday, chances are you already know George Mattocks. George has worked with the Pro Shop for over two years and can be found working outside helping to start players, explaining the course rules to “new-to-the-course” players, washing and cleaning out the carts, restocking the carts with pencils, scorecards and sand. George also helps keep the facility clean and helps recycle bottles and cans. He starts around noon and usually stays until the last carts come in off the course. George has lived in TGO since 2012 with his wife, Deb. They moved here from North Carolina. When he can, George tries to golf three to four times a week.

CSA Business A Message From Chef Ace French At The Blue Heron
I just wanted to personally thank you for the great reception I have received since becoming your chef. Your warmth and graciousness have made me feel at home very quickly. Your support means the world to me, and I thank you. I want to take a moment and write to you about the new menu. I know for some of you, it may have been stressful, confusing and to some, even frustrating. I completely understand your feelings and I have tried to make the transition as smooth as possible. When I first looked at the old menu, I saw a menu that was very heavy on fried foods and predominantly chicken. It was a fine menu but operationally I had some concerns. I have tried to create a menu that is, first, healthier. Every opportunity to cook in a healthier style is used. Only canola oil is used, frying is greatly reduced as sautéing and blackening are being used more often. Second, I have added a greater variety of proteins, including pork, Certified Angus Beef, fresh fish, Florida-caught shrimp, and clams. Lastly, I have added almost entirely scratch made food. The old-school way food should be made with no preservatives or additives. We now make all our own desserts, sauces, seasonings, and cook our proteins from a raw state. We buy fresh bread daily from a local baker. But most importantly, I have instilled a sense of pride in the food we serve from our staff. They are genuinely proud of each dish we put out. We miss the mark sometimes, but we always are striving to improve and grow. Your support of the new menu has been overwhelming and I appreciate it. I just hope that we can continue to move forward and grow. We have a lot of exciting new things to try together, some will be a success, some not, but let’s enjoy it together and have fun doing so. Thank you... Chef Ace

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)
Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to dif ferent water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets,
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073. Both are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Community Information & Notices CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Service Animal Rules
According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs. If you’ve got me, you want to share me;

Community Information & Notices Important Information About Your Drinking Water Frequently Asked Questions Temporary Water Treatment Change Scheduled
Beginning May 21, 2022, Cocoa water customers may notice a chlorine odor or a change in taste or color in their tap water. During this period, Cocoa Utilities Department will temporarily change its water disinfection method to provide additional protection against contamination to help ensure that your water remains safe. This temporary change in water chemistry will not affect the safety of your drinking water. What is changing? The Cocoa Utilities Dept. normally uses chloramine to disinfect the water. Chloramine is commonly used to disinfect drinking water. It is formed by mixing chlorine with ammonia. It is more stable than chlorine, providing longer-lasting disinfection as the water moves through pipes to our customers. You can find out more about chloramine at https://www.epa.gov/ dwreginfo/chlorarnines-drinking-water. During this temporary change, free chlorine - without any ammonia - will be used. Changing to free chlorine periodically provides additional protection against microorganism contamination and helps ensure the water you receive remains safe. What does this mean? Free chlorination is a temporary process that distributes free chlorine in place of combined chlorine ( chloramines) throughout the water distribution system as part of distribution system maintenance. This temporary change in the disinfection method of your water will not affect the safety of your water. You water remains safe to drink and use in your home. Special Cautions for Kidney Dialysis Patients & Fish Owners During the first week and last week of this period, as the water in the distribution system transitions from chloramine disinfectant to free chlorine and then back to chloramines, customers who use kidney dialysis machines should be aware that their water may contain chlorine, ammonia, and/or a mixture of the two. During the middle two weeks, the water should contain free chlorine only. Other specialized users of water, such as fish owners, stores and restaurants with fish aquariums and holding tanks for fish and shellfish, along with hospitals, blood/dialysis clinics, or users of home dialysis equipment may need to take action to maintain appropriate water quality during this temporary switch in disinfection. These users are encouraged to contact an appropriate professional for guidance on how to use the equipment during this period. The temporary change in treatment may have adverse effects on dialysis machines and may be harmful to fish and aquatic mammals if not properly addressed. For additional information: The Cocoa Utilities Department is committed to providing clean, fresh drinking water to all customers. For more information on this change in treatment process visit our website at www.CocoaFL.org. You can also call Don Downs, Utilities Conservation & PR Officer, 321-433-8705 or email at ddowns@cocoafl.org, 351 Shearer Boulevard, Cocoa, FL 32922.
Why is Cocoa temporarily switching its disinfection method? Changing the disinfectant method to free chlorine periodically provides additional protection against microorganism contamination and helps ensure the water you receive remains safe. Do other local utilities that typically disinfect water with chloramine periodically use free chlorine for disinfection? Temporary and periodic switches in disinfectant are a well-known industry standard, particularly for utilities in warm climates such as Florida. Who is affected by the temporary switch in disinfectant? During the first week and last week of this period, as the water in the distribution system transitions from chloramine disinfectant to free chlorine and then back to chloramines, customers who use kidney dialysis machines should be aware that their water may contain chlorine, ammonia, and/or a mixture of the two. What actions do I need to take to prepare for the temporary switch in disinfectant? Only fish, amphibian and reptile owners, as well as dialysis patients, need to take special precautions. For all other users, there are no precautions that you need to take. However, if you are sensitive to the taste or smell of chlorine, you can collect water in a container and place it in your refrigerator for a few hours. This will allow for much of the chlorine to leave the water. Some customers may notice a change in color. If they are concerned about the color they should contact the Utilities Department. How can I remove chlorine from drinking water? Boiling water will remove chlorine, as will allowing chlorinated water to stand in an open container for a few hours. What is chloramine? Chloramine is the normal disinfectant used to treat Cocoa’s water. It is a combination of chlorine and ammonia that is added in very small amounts to treated water to provide continuous disinfection in the pipes and tanks that distribute drinking water. Is my water safe to drink? Cocoa’s water is safe to drink. Cocoa is a regional utility provider. As such, safe, reliable, quality drinking water is our job and we are dedicated to providing that to our customers. Where can I find more information on Cocoa’s drinking water? For more infonnation about Cocoa’s Drinking Water. Visit www.CocoaWaterWorks.com or www.CocoaFL.org To view Cocoa’s 2020 Water Quality Report visit: www.CocoaFL.gov/WaterOualityReport.

Meet John Roberts -
TGO’s True Treasure For over 25 years John Roberts has been a volunteer here at TGO, and has always strived to make ours the best RV, Golf and Nature Resort in the USA. In 1998, upon his arrival at TGO, John started fishing for Largemouth Bass (his goal was to catch 100,000 Bass) and in so doing always carried a trash bag on his belt, picking up trash around the lakes, along the roads or wherever he saw it. John reached his 100,000 goal (a documented feat) several years ago. 63,000 plus of those have been caught right here in TGO. The remaining 37,000 Bass were caught in his RV travels from California to Nova Scotia. His largest Bass to date is 18 lbs. 4 oz. a stunning 29” long. John caught that fish here in TGO on December 10, 2016.
16
It was in 2005 that John started to help improve our lakes by personally asking the EPA for advise on plants that benefited our lakes. They gladly came to TGO and provided him the information. John and his crews and have planted Pickerelweed, Arrowhead, Canna Lilies, Blue Flag Iris, Ferns and other plants over the years in and around our 32 ponds. All the time picking up trash around our ponds. For 20 years John has been in charge of stocking our ponds, relying on assistance from our Nature Center volunteers to help with the project. Prior to this, CSA paid a supervisor and employees to do the stocking. John has done a monthly pond topic talk about our ponds at the Nature Center for the past 10-12 years. In addition, twice a year he provides CSA a written report about pond conditions and recommendations John was named TGO volunteer of the year for 20112012. In February, 2021 he was the only volunteer to be named an honorary CSA service staff member with a service employee shirt (which he wears proudly).
Volunteering For Our Community He is responsible for procuring our present Grass Carp permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Comission. He’s established TGO as a Monarch waystation with over 270 Milkweed plants for our butterflies and for past five years has personally paid for and planted Milkweed plants along the ponds for the Monarchs to feed. Several years ago, John provided TGO homeowners and outsiders a Keep Brevard Beautiful tour of Lake Judy’s wetlands and what we are doing for our Monarch butterflies. For approximately 10 years, six days a week, John has weed-whacked the buffer zone around Lake Judy and its wetlands. In January 2022 he had to discontinue this work due to health issues but he still continues to pick up trash in the Maintenance Yard and along our roadways seven days a week
This paragraph was printed in The Happenings, in Billy Specht’s letter, in the February 19, 2021 issue:
“John’s contributions to the health of TGO’s lakes, wildlife and overall cleanliness of our community are immeasurable. As our Pond Monitor, John has single-handedly shaped Lake Judy into a Florida natural preserve by weeding and hand-planting native flora around the shoreline. He plants native flowers to encourage the proliferation of the Monarch butterfly. He leads a team of volunteers to conduct an annual fish-stocking that encourages a healthy population of native fish in our 32 lakes. He picks up trash throughout TGO every day. He monitors the health of our lakes and natural areas every day, documents the results, then provides a monthly report to the Board and me without fail. John is an incredible, selfless person with a kind heart for people, plants and animals, and I’m honored to know him.” Some of John’s other achievements include: As you can see, John is one of TGO’s True Treasures. • He is the only original and present member of the BeautiHis loyalty and love for our resort has made this park a betfication Committee formed by Lynn Jacobs many years ago. ter place for us all to live and enjoy. Thank you, John. • For years he taught a fishing seminar at TGO. • Organizing his volunteer pond monitors to pick up palm fronds after storms. • He is past/present Vice President of Condo VIII. • John appeared in the Ferbuary 10, 2010 edition of Florida Today recognizing him as an elete fisherman. • As a result of all of this work, he has saved TGO thousands of dollars.
John has a solid support crew when it comes to restocking TGO’s 32 lakes. Here he is shown with his brother (left) Marshall, Ron Peoples and to his right, Jeff Shireman from Shongaloo Fisheries.

Restocking TGO’s 32 Lakes
Lots of buckets and lots of volunteers. TGO residents showed up in force to help John Roberts restock our 32 lakes with 5,260 Largemouth Bass and 2,955 Bluegill for a total of 8,215 fish. Each team of residents would grab a yellow bucket with a designated amount of fish (based on size of each lake) and drive their carts to that lake and release the fish. A well organized and fun event.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors
The 3rd annual Scavenger Hunt turned out to be a big hit! Karri Conover and Belle Maropis took top honors, Betty Salter and Margaret DiGiulio finished 2nd and Phil and ReShelle Enoch were 3rd. Ray Kite presented each of them their trophies - which he custom made. Karen Arthur, Doris Aliev and Susie Jones were part of the hunt as were Jen Isbill and Bill Kahl who were attempting to kidnap Karma - the sweetest puppy on the planet. This year there were 27 carts and 45 people who joined in the fun.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors Pet Corner
When not busy patroling the CSA grounds, TGO’s Courtesy Patrol Officer, Pete Hallock, enjoys spending time with his goldendoodle and labradoodle, Lily and Lucy. You’ll find them at the Dog Park and cruising around TGO in their John Hardy, Jeremy Bain and Guy Sampson are making headway in converting golf cart. Both dogs are rescues - Lily is 10 years old and the old Jukebox Cafe into additional CSA office space and a new game room Lucy is 10 and a half. We’re not sure what breed or how old Pete is. that will include a poker table, pool table, ping pong table and dart board.
On Cinco De Mayo all full-time CSA employees were treated to a taco lunch and then a representative, Jose Graulau, from FFVA Mutual, TGO’s wokers comp insurance company, provided safety tips along with videos on a variety of topics like how to prevent heat related illnesses, treating insect and snake bites, proper handling of equipment and correct ways to lift heavy objects, among other topics. This was a mandatory meeting and very informative for all our employees. Safety on the jobsite is our number one priority.

The Amazing Armadillo It leaps. It swims and even walks underwater all while wearing armor on its head, back and tail. What is it? It is Dasypus Novemcinctus, better known as the much-maligned armadillo. Spanish explorers who encountered it called it “little armored one.” It is the only mammal that wears a bony coat of armor. It is also the only mammal to give birth to four identical pups. Can you name the most common victims of highway mortality? Some folks refer to them as the Hillbilly Speedbump; it is, of course, the armadillo. They forage along roadsides and being nearly blind they don’t see the vehicle coming. When the vehicle gets close the armadillo is startled and leaps as much as four feet upward and into the passing vehicles. At Fort Benning, GA, when my son registered his motorcycle on base, he was warned of the dangers of armadillos on the country roads. Imagine traveling at 35+ miles per hour and you get hit in the head or chest with a football.... with a bone shell. One of the reasons I love armadillos is because they are such efficient natural exterminators. I watched one clean out a fire ant nest. It had its head in the ant nest as its long sticky tongue kept darting out and retracting with ants and larvae on it. The fire ants were crawling all over the armadillo, but it just kept eating with no reaction to the ones trying to defend the nest. They also eat other things we don’t want in our lawns, like grubs, grasshoppers, armyworms, cockroaches, flies, beetles and wasps. In fact, they have even been known to clean out an entire yellow-jacket nest. The shallow holes they create while foraging are easily repaired by shoving the soil and grass back in place. Like many nocturnal mammals they may be seen during the day foraging. This does not mean they are sick or are carrying some disease. Most mammals will do this when they have young depending on them.

By Betty Salter
How did that amazing creature with its little legs make its way here? Some adventurous nine-banded armadillos left the 20 other species of armadillo back in Latin America, to make their way into Texas around the 1850s. In 1922 Gus Edwards brought a pair of armadillos from Texas to the little zoo he had created the year before on Highland Street in Cocoa. He put them in an outdoor enclosure. One night shortly after their arrival they dug their way out and disappeared.
In addition to eating fire ants, they also eat other things we don’t want in our lawns, like grubs, grasshoppers, armyworms, cockroaches, flies, beetles and wasps. Armadillos are our friend! In June 1930 the Titusville Star Advocate reported armadillos being run over on Cheney Highway. By 1960 the armadillo population in Texas had expanded enough to blend with Florida’s population that had expanded to the panhandle. Leprosy is not common but can be found in some armadillos. They were given leprosy by people and sometimes people get leprosy from them, but that is rare in Florida since most Floridians do not eat or handle armadillos. One survey showed that about 20% of the armadillos along the Gulf Coast carried the bacteria that causes leprosy. Betty Salter is a Naturalist and Trail Master at The Great Outdoors. She is a butterfly enthusiast who enjoys hiking, birding and working with all the animals in our resort. Betty is also very active with our local Firewise program.

Help Us Name This Handsome Critter...
We have a new addition to the Nature Center Porch. We would love to have everyone come and see him. The only thing is we need a name for him. I am inviting the community to come see him. Think of a great name and we will see who comes up with the best one (one name per person). If the name chosen has multiple entries, then a drawing will be held. The winner will get a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (to be delivered only in TGO). The name will be chosen in the Fall to give everyone a chance to choose a name. Send your entry to Sandy Juba at sjubatgo@gmail.com or drop in the box in the Nature Center porch. He used to sit next to the Addison Canal. I wish to thank Michele Lagalo, who completely refurbished him and made him the most handsome critter in the park. 33

SURVIVAL OPTIONS FOR TGO RESIDENTS
by Ed Brown
Your survival, as a resident, will be relative to the threat and your awareness of it. So what are some of the threats to life and property here in TGO and how can you minimize the damages? WILDLAND FIRE and SMOKE: One or more garden hoses (50 to 75 feet) with nozzles, attached to home water to wet down spot fires on vegetation, roof, gutters, or under a porch. Stiff “Fire Brooms” to brush out lawn fires near the structure. Of course we are assuming “lean, clean and green” conditions for vegetation within 30 feet your home. The smoke from a fire can be a severe health threat to residents, as well. Get out of the smoke cone and stay out of the way of the pro. fire fighters, who are equipped and trained to protect you and your property. If a MANDATORY EVACUATION has not yet been called, load your evacuation bag(s) on board your escape vehicle and get out of “Dodge”. Don’t forget pet supplies and water. If you need to make a list now, you’re way too late. GO! If this “ escape” is designated, by the TGO Manager, to be a “MANDATORY EVACUATION,” you will be restricted to use of a car or pickup truck only, (No RVs or trailers) and will be limited to use of the designated (see map and signs) emergency exit. Police will be in charge.Do as they say! Some evacuating units will be directed to the Manor Parking Lot. Brevard Fire Dep’t. considers it to be a “fire defensible location.” Be Careful, Be Cooperative, Be Safe! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! Await the “ALL CLEAR” that will allow you to return home! Another emergency that could require evacuation of TGO would be a Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Spill on I-95 or Route 50. Like the smoke cone from a fire it will drift down wind and needs to be kept out of your lungs. Solution: DRIVE OUT OF THE CONE at a right angle (90 degrees) to the wind direction). Again wait for an “ALL CLEAR before you return; ventilate your home before you move back. The HURRICANE is a seasonal threat to residents of TGO. The Weather Services and TV are reporting as much as a week prior to the storm’s landfall. You have time for preparation. Will you start now or give the storm and the reporters a few more days to really make up their minds about course, strength, landfall and what type of soup to stock in your “ SAFE ROOM? You should have done your preparation months ago! We’ll Cover READY LISTS in the next issue of The Happenings. Fortunately, most list items and procedures can apply to multiple disaster scenarios, thereby saving you budget money for gasoline! Remember, AWARENESS. Know what is happening or is predicted to happen. AVOIDANCE. Get in a safe place (shelter) or evacuate.

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker It is more fun than you can imagine talking with TGO photographers. In the last two issues of Snap-Shot, Robin and Jennifer told us how the hobby of photography brings them so much fun. They both talked of photographing the beauty of the natural surroundings of their precious TGO community -and how it makes their day.
Meet Doug Jensen
In this issue, Doug Jensen brings us a view of photography from someone who has photography as both a hobby and a life-long career. He and his wife Sally, started coming to TGO as snowbirds seven years ago and they love it here. They are very generous neighbors. They serve on community committees, manage the Shuffleboard club, produce safety videos for the Firewise committee, provide videos to the Nature Center, and donate equipment, including the large TV in the Nature Center meeting room. Doug started in photography by building a darkroom with his brother in his family’s basement when he was in the eighth grade. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in television production and has owned a couple of video production companies over the last 40 years, that served Fortune 500 businesses, many government agencies, all of the broadcast television networks and dozens of well-known cable channels. One of his first professional assignments was being hired by PBS for six months to shoot a documentary about Senator Jake Garn’s (Utah from 1974 to 1993) trip on the Space Shuttle Discovery as a payload specialist in 1985. Doug says he loved that assignment, and always dreamed of relocating to the Space Coast so he could shoot more at KSC. Now, he and Sally have finally done that by buying a home at TGO, making it their primary residence .
46
Doug says, “These days, most of my television assignments require travel to other states or countries, so we figured why not make our base of operations in Florida and avoid the dreary winter weather of New England? The space industry is poised to grow by leaps and bounds in the next decade, and when I’m not on the road, I want to be here to document it. There has never been a day in the last 40 years that television/video production has not been a part of my life.” If you watch the CBS Sunday Morning show, you know Doug’s nature footage is often featured at the end of the program. In fact this past Easter, he had a spectacular video of our own Great Horned Owls on Addison Way. I asked Doug when he plans to retire completely, and his facial expression told me his answer: “I will never give up television/video production entirely, but these days I find myself being hired more often to teach workshops, write camera field guides, shoot test footage for camera manufacturers, and serve as a consultant for various television programs. But I will probably die with a camera in my hand. I love being out in nature shooting video, and TGO is a great place for engaging with other nature photographers. I’m surprised more TGO’ers don’t take a camera in hand and give it a try. The more you shoot, the better you’ll get.” That was the perfect lead-in to extract some free guidance from Doug. I asked him what camera the hobby photographer in TGO should purchase, and what ought be their first step to get away from using full-automatic camera settings.
...I will probably die with a camera in my hand. I love being out in nature shooting video, and TGO is a great place for engaging with other nature photographers. “Unfortunately, I can’t really help people decide which camera to buy because I don’t have very much knowledge of consumer-level equipment. My needs, as a professional television cameraman, are quite a bit different than those of a hobbyist photographer. But, we live in an age where digital has revolutionized everything, and it is certainly possible to take stunning photos with cameras that can fit anyone’s budget. The key is to learn HOW to use whatever camera you choose. It’s not the model or brand of camera that matters, it is the skills of the person looking through the viewfinder that will determine success or failure.” So I asked Doug the logical next question, “What is the best tip you can give a beginner, once they have learned the basic controls and settings of their camera?”
Doug said, “I recommend that people choose the ‘apIf you see Doug shooting video on the nature trail or elseerture priority’ mode on their camera and set the widest where around The Great Outdoors, don’t hesitate to engage aperture that their lens allows, such as f/2.0 or f/2.8. A him in conversation about photography. He’s always ready to wide-open aperture not only lets in more light, but it also offer tips and pointers to beginners. provides the shallowest depth-of-field so that the subject of the photo (a deer, bird, bee, gator, person, etc.) is in sharp focus and the background and foreground look blurry. This brings the viewer’s eye to the subject and keeps distracting elements out of focus. In other words, using the ‘aperture priority’ mode will ensure shallow depth-of-field while the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed and/or ISO to ensure perfect exposure.” Doug went on, “A second tip would be to learn about composition rather than always putting the subject right smack at the center of the frame. Everyone’s heard of the ‘rule of thirds’, but good composition is really about having ‘balanced’ composition, and that skill can only come from experience and analyzing the work of photographers who’s work you admire. If your photographs have shallow depthfield, interesting composition, good exposure, and sharp focus, you can’t help but get some great photos you will be proud to show other people.”

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
