Meet Kathy Stinnett

What an amazing benefit it is to have our own mail center inside the TGO grounds, and thanks to Kathy Stinnett and her staff, it is a very efficient operation. Kathy has been our Mail Center Guru for over 16 years - and from what we saw, it is no easy task. Receiving and shipping nearly 40,000 packages a year is a daunting chore. Then there is the regular mail service. Keeping track of RV site mail versus residential mail, helping residents with storing their mail while they are gone and the forwarding of their mail. It definitely fills up Kathy’s day. Read more on page 16

Anastasia State Park - St. Augustine

Just north of us in St. Augustine is a great place to get away, the Anastasia State Park. This park is perfect for the RV campers and nature lovers alike... plus the city of St. Augustine is a “Must See” with its Spanish colonial architecture, fantastic restaurants and historical tours - claiming rights to the oldest city in America. Our very own TGO nature photographer, Robin Francis, shares with us how much fun there is along the beaches and bike paths and the great watersports opportunities. Make sure to look at the online version of The Happenings for more of Robin’s fantastic nature images. Continued on page 20

SNAP-SHOT: David Spahn, President of TGO Photo Club In Jim Brubaker’s continuing series of articles featuring TGO’s photographic talent, Jim focuses on David Spahn, president of our TGO photo club. David, a retired veterinarian from Maine, has many interests other than photography. He’s also a woodworker, plays pickleball, rides his bike a 100 miles a week and is president of Condo 15. He likes to sail, has been on an African safari and especially enjoys working with our local TGO photographers, where everyone shares their knowledge, while teaching and learning different techniques. Manager’s Corner May 27, 2022 Dear TGO Community, Last week we held the final CSA Board Meeting of the season. Board meetings and most committees will now take a break and re-convene in October 2022. This past season there were dozens of items your Board members had to research, discuss and approve. I witnessed a great deal of hard work and leadership from each CSA board member. These efforts were led by Chairman Tom Wheir, who put in countless hours working closely with me to champion for the improvement of our community. Your CSA Board of Directors moved our community forward this season, and I am grateful for their selfless time and efforts. Please consider taking a moment to reach out to your board members, wish them a great summer break, and thank them for their work and volunteerism this season. Your assessment dollars are hard at work now. Your patience is appreciated as we work through the dust and mess to make improvements throughout the community. This week we are repairing another large section of our Manor parking lot in the southwest corner, breaking out the old concrete, re-establishing the base material and re-pouring this section so that is it level and dry. Last week we completed installing the new guardrails around the Addison Canal bridge. This week our CSA office is open for business, but closed to foot traffic, as we clean and organize our files and eliminate clutter in anticipation of the office expansion. Next week we will be pressure cleaning all common area buildings and facilities. Friday, June 10 at 12:00 pm we will close the Manor pool and spa for renovations of the deck and pool surface. We were fortunate to receive a small amount of rain late last week to help water-in the TruGreen spraying, but our community is still facing drought conditions. Our CSA irrigation team is working diligently to get caught up on work orders. Three members of our utility crew have stepped up to assist them. Thank you for your patience as we deal with some wiring and piping issues in areas of the community that take time to trouble-shoot and repair. While lack of rain has been an issue lately, soon we will enter into storm season and we will face the opposite problem, too much water. The good news is our maintenance team, with the help of a large rental excavator, has used this dry period to reshape and clear many of our storm water runoff ditches, and we look forward to seeing these ditches work to drain off excess water during storm season. This is the time of year where we see business at the restaurant and golf course begin to slow down. This is the appropriate time to conduct some advertising outside of our TGO gates. We have partnered with Florida Today newspaper to reach out to the people outside our gates, to remind them we are open to the public for golf and dining. Florida Today is currently running a Father’s Day golf promotion and give-away, and after Father’s Day another marketing campaign will begin to promote our wonderful new menu at Blue Heron Restaurant. Next month we will need your help. When the time is right, we will ask you to go online and vote for TGO Golf Course and Blue Heron Restaurant as Florida Today’s ‘Best of the Best’ in Brevard. More details on how and when to vote will be in the next issue of The Happenings. I wish all of you a safe, healthy and comfortable summer season. The CSA office will be closed this Monday, May 30, 2022. In recognition of Memorial Day weekend, I will take this opportunity to thank all of our TGO veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our country’s freedom. Sincerely,

Billy Specht, CSA Manager

CSA Business

Golf Course Superintendent Shane Willey continues to work his magic with course conditions. May 9 was a maintenance day for our course. Here they are smoothing out a sand application on the greens along with regular maintenance on the putting surfaces. The fairways were “verti-cut’ and then circle cut with the fairway mower, leaving behind a more consistent surface from which to play.

The dates for the monthly meetings are: October 18, 2022; November 15, 2022; December 20, 2022; January 17, 2023; February 21, 2023; March 21, 2023; April 18, 2023. AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Community Information & Notices CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Service Animal Rules

According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs. It belongs to you, but other people use it

more than you do. What is it?

Your Full-Service TGO Salon for 25 Years 15

Meet Kathy Stinnett One of the greatest benefits of living inside TGO is that we have our own mail center. Imagine every time you needed this service, you had to drive downtown and deal with the crowds, especially during holiday season. Well, we are not only lucky to have this service onsite, but we are also lucky to have Kathy Stinnett, who has managed our mail center for the past 16 years. Kathy has lived in TGO for about 25 years. She and her husband, Bill, first started on Oak Cove with an RV lot and then built their house on Grande Haven where they’ve lived for over 21 years. In her former life, Kathy was office manager at the Dearborn Sausage Company in Dearborn, MI, where she handled all the shipping responsibilities for the hams and sausages her company distributed domestically. Bill worked with Ford Motor Company at the Romulus, MI, parts redistribution center. After retiring, they first moved to Kentucky and lived on Lake Barkley for seven years. They then moved to TGO. Between the two of them they have six children and several grandchildren.

Kathy has seen a lot of changes to our mail service here in TGO. One of those was the impact of the internet, especially Amazon... Kathy started working at the mail center 16 years ago. Back then, the mail volume was no where near what it is today. Our current mail center was originally a storage garage for an antique firetruck (that’s a whole other story). Kathy has seen a lot of changes to our postal service here in TGO. One of those was the impact of the internet, especially Amazon, which has created a mass volume of packages that both arrive and ship from our mail center. “Right now, we handle about 3,000 packages a month,”

16

- TGO’s Mail Guru

explained Kathy, “and that is just the the RV sites.” Our mail center and Kathy’s staff is responsible for all mail and packages related to the RV sites. This includes the streets of Sunset, Greenwing, Club Cove, Coach Club, Windsong, Oak Cove, Fawn Trail and the RV sites on Plantation. There are two separate mail routes in TGO; the RV sites and the Residential sites. The US Postal worker you see in the office and at the outside parcel lockers is distributing the mail for the residential route and takes care of the mail and packages that are delivered to those houses. Our mail center is almost a full-service facility. The only thing they don’t do is handle overnight mail and some things related to international mail, like international packages requiring customs forms. Besides Kathy there are four other part-time employees; Nancy, Pat, Debbie and Tacy. “It takes about a year for a new employee to learn everything involved in the job,” claims Kathy. “Even though we are not official postal employees, we still abide by all postal rules and regulations.” When we were there for the interview, we joked with Kathy about receiving large boxes - which is difficult for her staff as they are limited on space to store too many boxes, let alone large ones. She went on to explain that she has received mattresses, a power washer and even a 6 foot electric child’s car. She’s hoping no one will be shipping her any refrigerators any time soon.

How YOU can help our TGO mail operation run smoothly... 1. Please wait at least two hours from the time you receive a notice on your phone or computer that your package has arrived before coming to the mail center. Here’s how it works... The truck backs up to mail center, scans the packages and puts them in the office, but they don’t put the packages in the parcel lockers or place the pink slips in the box. That’s what Kathy and her team does, so that two hour time period is necessary for them to sort packages and put the notices in the boxes or the packages in the parcel lockers.

3. Rather than calling to ask if there is a package for you, please go look for yourself. Between all the mail and packages, they don’t have time to look for everyone’s packages. There will be a key or pink slip in your box if you have a package.

2. Empty your mailbox at least every other day. Don’t let it accumulate for more than two days. The boxes are small and if they get too full, the mail has to be put into a holding box and put on a shelf and there is very limited space. Shelf space is designated for mail that is being held. Please don’t treat the mail center as a storage facility.

5. If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail held, please know that your mail can be held for free for 30 days. Just let the mail center know you will be gone so they can collect your mail. There is a form you will need to fill out. If you want your mail forwarded, there is a small fee of $25 per month plus postage to facilitate this service.

4. If you are running a business out of your house and need lots of supplies, please don’t rely on our mail center for your supplies. Please order them from USPS (where they are free) or other supply sites. Our mail center has limited space for shipping boxes, bags and labels.

This behind-the-scene look provides just a small glimpse of the amount of individual boxes that Kathy and her team maintain. All-in-all, there are over 1,400 boxes. The US Postal Service delivers mail directly to 800 residential boxes and Kathy’s staff manages over 600 boxes - which are the RV sites. In addition, her team is responsible for receiving and distributing over 3,000 packages a month.

Walking The C & E Carlson Trail Time to explore another one of the great TGO Nature Trails so we contacted our trail guide, Karri Conover, and set out to walk the Clair and Ernie Carlson trail. The Carlsons were some of the early supporters of the Nature Center at The Great Outdoors. The trail bears their names as a testament to all they did to advance the concept of living in harmony with nature. This is a moderate loop style trail which can have muddy areas after a heavy rain. The distance is .94 miles. Make sure to be aware of your surroundings anytime you are hiking, and its best to take a partner. We recommend you carry a cell phone, sun screen and insect repellent. And remember... “Take only memories, leave only footprints.”

Each season different plants appear in the understory. In the fall and winter you may find green cross orchids (habenaria floribunda), a terrestrial orchid species. Flag pawpaw can be seen late winter through early spring. Continue through the pine forest to an area where oaks begin to mingle with the pines. Soon palms and oaks become the dominate trees. Continue through the palm hammock and exit onto the golf cart nature trail. Turn right on the cart trail, look for a white post with a red reflector and turn right back into the hammock. Then enter the white trail and walk through a lovely palm hammock interspersed with oaks. Many of the oaks will have resurrection fern on them. Look for signs of wildlife, listen to the birds. Continue through the hammock past a wetland and return to the mixed forest. Though part of the return is on the same trail as the beginning, you will probably notice different things. On our trip, we saw Cardinals, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Carolina Wrens, and numerous flowers - which Two Trails in One we used the “Picture This” app to help identify the plants. The trail is blazed with The hike only takes about an hour and is in mostly shaded blue and white markings. conditions. A very enjoyable walk. Native Americans also enjoyed the fruit which turns deep purple when ripe. Tawny Emperor and Hackberry Emperor butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves and may be seen up high in the canopy from April through October.

- St. Augustine, Florida

Anastasia State Park, St. Augustine St. Augustine is a city on the northeast coast of Florida, an easy two hour drive from The Great Outdoors. It lays claim to being the oldest city in the United States and is known for its Spanish colonial architecture as well as Atlantic Ocean beaches like St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach. Anastasia State Park is a protected wildlife sanctuary located in St. Augustine. By Robin Francis Anastasia’s beautiful beach attracts walkers, joggers, anglers, birders and nature lovers. Beach breaks and seasonally warm water draws surfers and kayakers. You can walk the beach and look for shells, birds, dolphins and whales. There are more than four miles of beach for walking and biking along with lots of trails and park roads. It’s a beautiful spot to watch the sun come up! Anastasia Watersports rents canoes, kayaks, sailboats and stand-up paddleboards and lessons are available for the various watersports. There are several launch areas available. There is an Island Beach Shop and Grill that sells beach, camping and fishing supplies, and also rents bicycles and surfboards. Anastasia has three picnic areas with tables and restrooms, in addition to three playgrounds. Anastasia’s full-facility campground features 139 sites with electric and water hookups for RVs and tents. Campground sites are for RVs that are 35’ or less. TIP: Reservations are difficult to get! We made our reservations 11 months in advance. Showers and laundry facilities are available. A dump station is available at no charge.

Wifi is available at the Island Beach Shop and Grill as well as the day use area. Internet service at our campsite was satisfactory on our Verizon service. Depending on where your campsite is located in the park, it is about a mile walk or ride to the beach parking area. Pets are prohibited on the beaches and boardwalks but are allowed in the campsites. Fishing, boating, swimming and fires are allowed in designated areas only. We would highly recommend this beautiful Florida State Park. It is located close to many of the St. Augustine attractions. There are many places of interest in this, the nation’s oldest city, that you will never be lacking for something to do. Or, you can sit and listen to the waves on the beach if you prefer. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Directions: From I-95 take exit 311. Go East on State Road 207. Turn right on State Road 312 East. Turn left (north) A1A. Travel approximately 1.5 miles north to main park entrance. Rates: $28.00 per night. Florida residents over the age of 65 are half price and pay $14.00. Recently, Florida State Parks has added an additional fee of $7.00 per night for utilities. Reservation fee is $6.70

CSA PATROL Speeding Inside TGO

This is a subject of which we are all guilty. 15 MPH is a crazy slow speed, especially when you are in a hurry to get out of the park or heading back to your home. It’s important that we take a look at this issue to have a better understanding why we have a 15 MPH limit inside this park. There are a lot of reasons - but they all point back to one factor - Safety! If you want to hear some crazy stories, just stop and ask one of our Courtesy Patrol Officers. They’ve seen and heard it all - especially the excuses. The bottom line is the 15 MPH limit is in place to help protect all of us. Our park is full of residents walking, bicycling and driving golf carts - none of these fair well against a speeding commercial truck entering the park or a 40 foot motorhome, let alone a 3,500 pound passenger car. In addition to humans we have other residents in the form of birds, turtles, snakes, deer and, of course, our gators. All of these have been victims of speeding accidents over the years. We’re sure most of you have heard about one of our sandhill cranes getting hit and now walking our park on one leg. Completely preventable. Slow down and pay attention! Concentration and discipline are the keys here. You just have to focus that 15 MPH is the maximum speed and then make it a habit to always check your speedometer. This is a rule that benefits all of us, so let’s all do our part.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

Three of our TGO couples recently escaped the heat for a private chartered sailing trip through the Carribbean. Jack and Sherri Hennen, Rob and Vicky Hunter and Jeff and Tammy Alpert did some island hopping through the British Virgin Islands after their flight from Miami to St. Thomas. They ferried over to Tortola where they lived onboard their boat, sailing out to Cooper, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke islands. They spent their time snorkling, swimming, beachcombing and seeing lots of dolphins, sea turtles and fish along the way. From what we can tell from these photos, it looks like they all had a great time. Send us some of your photos and we’ll see if we can include them in the next Happenings.

It took a village but eventually, Gizmo, a lost dog that found his way to TGO (from Port St. John) decided that Betty Salter was a comforting presence. Helping Betty were Marie Moraites, Ruby Fox-Logan, Nancy Clark, and Golf Course Superintendent Shane Willey was in charge of course George and Karen Mattila. Gizmo was transferred to the Furever Home maintenance on May 9. And later that afternoon over 200 TGO Animal Rescue in Titusville. residents took part in a self tour of the golf course.

Blue’s parents are efforts around the course on May 9. They came away with numerous bags of trash Ron and Nancy Wagner and they are very happy they found and over 600 golf balls! We need more volunteers next time. each other.

Beautification Award Cinamon Nedvin

759 Plantation Drive This month’s Beautification Award goes to Cinamon Nedvin of 759 Plantation Drive. Cinamon first moved to TGO in 2015 and bought this house in 2018. She started working on the yard by adding some plants in pots and enclosing the front area with stone fencing. Recently she worked with a friend, Gwen George, who is an experienced gardener, to create a colorful design for the front of the house. Working together and considering the amount of sunlight this garden receives, they chose orange ixora and blue plumbago to offset the beige of the house and to highlight several bronze pots already in the yard. There is a terrestrial orchid, so named because it lives in the earth, and several liriope. Some bromeliads couldn’t be planted under the Robellini palm because of the root system so they were placed on the ground with a stone anchor because they don’t need soil to grow. The finishing touch is two heron statutes. Stop by and admire the design at 759 Plantation. Congratulations on this award!

Is it Possum or Opossum? If you are talking about a North American marsupial, it is an opossum (the O is soft or silent). The possum is native to New Zealand, Australia and China and has a furry tail, while our opossum has a bare tail. This marvelous marsupial weighs in at 4 to 6 pounds and can reach a length of 24 to 36 inches, including its prehensile tail which is as long as 10 to 17 inches. The opposable thumbs on its hind feet are handy, along with the tail, for climbing. As a child I climbed into an oak tree along with my brother and some friends and there we encountered an opossum. One of the bigger boys grabbed it and we all scampered down the tree to watch it play dead. It landed at our feet, eyes half closed, stiff as a board. We all backed away and waited. Sure enough, after a while it got up and walked away. “Playing ‘possum” is an autonomic response to fear like fainting, it can last as long as four hours. During that time the anal glands emit a foul-smelling odor, the teeth are bared and drool appears around the mouth.

...they eat thousands of ticks, insects, frogs, worms, nuts, seeds, fruit, small mammals (like mice and rats), carrion, and snakes including moccasins and rattlesnakes... they are immune to snake venom... The opossum’s long snout and 50 sharp little teeth cause them to appear quite ferocious, but they are rather timid, merely baring their teeth and hissing in hopes the threat will leave. Opossums seen foraging in the daytime are probably not ill but are feeding longer to support their joeys. They may have as many as 13 joeys in their pouch, but it is more likely to be seven or eight. When we find an opossum dead we always check for babies in their pouch. These joeys can be raised by a wildlife rehabilitation expert and released back into the wild. John Smith wrote about the “opossum,” spelling out what the native Americans said when referring to the cat-sized animal that was part of the diet in early Jamestown. The meaning of this Powhatan word is “white dog.” William Strachey, an English writer who recorded much of the English colonization of the New World, described the opossum as a “beast in bigness of a pig and in taste alike.” In those days they were valued for their meat and their fur.

By Betty Salter

Today we value them as an integral part of our ecosystem. Our precious opossums only live one to two years in the wild. During that time they eat thousands of ticks, insects, frogs, worms, nuts, seeds, fruit, small mammals (like mice and rats), carrion, and snakes including moccasins and rattlesnakes. Opossums are immune to snake venom as well as some diseases like rabies. The opossum is an important prey species for coyotes, bobcats, raptors, snakes, and dogs. Opossums do not dig burrows or dens. They are content to use whatever is handy, including gopher tortoise burrows. There is usually no need to trap or remove these unusual creatures. If you think you are having a problem with any animal, we have people here in TGO who will assess the problem and, when necessary, trap and remove the offending animal at no cost to you. Please contact one of these neighbors for assistance: Sandy Juba - 321 543-0502 Betty Salter - 321 223-8073 Nancy Clark - 321 292-1434

Help Us Name This Handsome Critter...

Betty Salter is a Naturalist and Trail Master at The Great Outdoors. She is a butterfly enthusiast who enjoys hiking, birding and working with all the anmals in our resort. Betty is also very active with our local Firewise program.

We have a new addition to the Nature Center Porch. We would love to have everyone come and see him. The only thing is we need a name for him. I am inviting the community to come see him. Think of a great name and we will see who comes up with the best one (one name per person). If the name chosen has multiple entries, then a drawing will be held. The winner will get a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (to be delivered only in TGO). The name will be chosen in the Fall to give everyone a chance to choose a name. Send your entry to Sandy Juba at sjubatgo@gmail.com or drop in the box in the Nature Center porch. He used to sit next to the Addison Canal. I wish to thank Michele Lagalo, who completely refurbished him and made him the most handsome critter in the park.

THE “BUG-OUT” BAG REVISITED

by Ed Brown

If you have to leave your home (or bug-out) in TGO because of a weather disaster (impending Hurricane, a Tornado or a Flood, even a Hazmat Spill, or a Wildland Fire), the essential items you want to have with you could be carried in a paper bag or in a cardboard box. Neither packing option would be comfortable to carry about, or be dry in a rain storm, or be practical. Think Backpack(s)! (Check outdoor equipment sales, or surplus military gear, or local stores or on-line). If your evacuation vehicle runs out of fuel or just dies, you might be hoofing it. Check the backpack for comfort as best you can. Some store-bought items to consider adding to your backpack are the following: 1. Parachute cord for multipurpose rigging 2. Notebook and pen 3. Compass for navigating 4. Flashlight for night use and signaling 5. Dry tinder, butane lighter and matches for fire starting 6. Pot for cooking and boiling water The Florida Atlas & Gazetteer by 7. Prescription medications and medical information, doctors names and phone numbers DeLorme is more than a book, it is a valuable reference guide 8. Bottled water and emergency food. Stores may not be open. You will get hungry! to Florida’s landscape that 9. Never have less than a half tank of fuel for your vehicle includes streets, backroads, 10. Pack a change of clothes, a serviceable knife or mult- tool and toilet paper water sources and attractions. A valuable evacuation tool. 11. Wear sturdy shoes. Take a jacket, towels, work gloves and a hat. Available online or at 12. Your cell phone and charger, cash money, and essential phone numbers major book stores. 13. Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker David Spahn said to me, “You kinda owe it to yourself to do all that you dream and then learn to let photography enhance it and make it more fun. If you are a sailor, carry a camera with you every day. If you are a rug hooker, carry a camera. If you love tennis, have your camera with you. To be a photographer you don’t have to give up anything. You just snap away and make whatever you do more fun.”

Meet David Spahn

is a little deep and might surprise you, but it is true. I was moved at a very early age by three famous photo artists who touched their viewers soul. Their photos had beauty, perfection, and a purpose. They are Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and Mathew Benjamin Brady.” His answer did surprise me. This guy knows a lot about photo history. He should be on Jeopardy. Trying to not show my surprise I responded, “How did they move you and how do they relate to you being a photographer who wants to do it all?” “They helped me realize photography covers all kinds of shooting skills. It is photographing nature and landscapes, it is capturing the message projected by humans and animals doing things, and it is seeing the intimacy of details through the lens. They inspired me to shoot often, to go on an African photo safari, to capture Atlantic Ocean scenes while sailing, and now, to photograph TGO’ers doing things. Those three famous photo artists projected messages that touched the inner me with things I feel deeply about. They inspired me to enjoy all the different kinds of photography and to learn to capture the action - the meaning of the scene - not just a bird sitting there.”

I replied, “You are right, David. Today, I encountered Patti Ripley and her cousin from Greenwing Trail using a cell phone to snap photos of the golf cart they planned to sell. When I ask what they were up to, Patti’s cousin jumped on the back of the cart and said: “I am a model selling golf carts on TV. Here, use my phone and take my picture.” Handing back the phone, they looked at it and starting laughing. “That is great. We love it. You and that photo made our day fun.”

You kinda owe it to yourself to do all that you dream and then learn to let photography enhance it and make it more fun. David is one of those people who likes to experience everything. In the wood shop he is a consultant wood turner, every Monday he is with the woodcarvers; he is often seen on the pickleball court, and David hosts all the Photo Club meetings. In his spare time he is president of Condo 15 and rides his bike 100 miles a week. David says photography is a part of whatever he is doing, and he said jokingly, “I want to do it all.” I asked ,“But David, how did photography become an interest of yours?” He said: “Well, I will tell you, my answer

46

David is a retired veterinarian from Maine. I wondered how he got to Florida and how he became leader of the photo club. I asked, “How did you select Veterinary Medicine as a career?” David sat up with an air of confidence, pride, and happiness and talked of his journey. “To experience it all, of course. The medical doctor route would not offer the opportunity to be the specialized/generalist I wanted to be. In the Vet world you had to develop specialized skills and still be a generalist. On a farm, the Vet

takes care of the general health of the animals, but also has to practice specialized skills - surgery, dermatology, delivering babies, etc. - the veterinarian had to be good at it all! That is what I wanted to do.” Tell me about you as president of the photo club. “As I said, there are so many types of photography - landscape, portrait, macro, wildlife and I want to practice each one of them. There are many TGO’ers who have photographic skills in each area and I want the club to give them the opportunity to share that knowledge. “I want the photo club to be an organization where each member can show their work and explain how they shot it, and then exchange helpful comments with other club members. I want it to be a place where ideas are shared on how to get

the most from your camera. I want to assure we schedule field trips that are socially fun and provide great photo opportunities. If you are motivated to do photography, I want the club to offer sharing, learning, and having fun with a very wide range of cameras and a wide range of photo types - and of course I want the club to continue hanging photos throughout TGO.” The Photo Club regularly updates over 60 photos that it hangs to decorate TGO - in the back porch of the manor including a video display, in the lobby of the manor, on the back wall of the CSA office, and on the wall of the card room of the new Library. The Photo Club meets from December through March on the first and third Friday - 1:00 pm at the Nature Center. For more information, contact David Spahn - 207-468-6760.

Above: You can view some of the Photo Club’s images on display inside the TGO Library.

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
