I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Grand Knight this past year. I know the year was busier than normal. We did many things for the parish, school, Carmelites, Fish Fry, Claire’s House, ID Drive, Habitat for Humanity and more. It was great to see so many knights step up and help in our community. We made a difference!
council that stepped forward. Most recently, Br. Sergio Perra lead the Mother’s Day Bouquet effort. Br. Andrew Cunha took the Navigator the next level! Br. Tony Martin and Br. Carlos Lopez helped many events, including the Fish Fry and the Wheelchair breakfast, while Brother Rick Terry stepped up many times to help after mass or several of our events!
I also want to thank my wife Karen and son Michael for their support in tolerating my long hours away from home. Karen has been especially supportive when I came home late after events.
Let’s not forget about our long standing knights, like SK Don Wagner and Br. Tony Luna and the Golf Tournament Committee for organizing the most successful tournament ever! Wow!! The biggest year ever!! PGK Dave Murray again ran the Keep Christ in Christmas and Br. Paul Gohring organized the Tootsie Roll Drive; it was their swan song I’m not sure how we’re going to follow in their footsteps.
During Admissions Degrees DD John Brennan always tells new Knights becoming a Knight involves family. This year I realized how true his comments really were. Together Karen and I worked to support many parish and council events!
Many Knights influenced our council to be better Catholic men in both unity and charity! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE Recently I lost a dear friend of mine. He had a small life policy with another company under $100k in value. A small retirement fund that he was putting money into. My friend a lifelong Catholic, a Brother Knight passed away at the age of 58. Most of us would consider this too early for our Lord to call someone home but unfortunately we have no control over his plan for any of us. A lot of the Brother Knights I visit feel they are set. This week I had an appointment with a Brother Knight who knew about our appointment but wasn't there. He left the entire meeting up to his wife because he had to plan out some cooking event! My time is valuable is so is yours. I set time aside from my work and family to help families plan so they do not end up in the same predicament as my friend did. The Brother finally showed up as his wife and I concluded our meeting. She had told me that he took the 50% pension option at his job. I asked her what she was planning on doing when her income drops off by 50% when he passes. There was the deer in the headlights look. He remained silent. I informed them that there are two options, one is life insurance to create a pension to replace the one from his job and the other is a settlement option on his retirement funds which will provide guaranteed income with no market risk. Keep in mind that we take on market risk when we are trying to grow our money prior to retirement. Once we are in retirement mode we want guaranteed payouts and limited or no risk as we will need those funds to get us through retirement in case the good lord doesn't call us home early. In closing my friend has four kids, two adults and two minors. His wife will reach the "blackout period" with social security survivor benefits on three of the four kids. She will receive no survivor benefits until she is 60(7 years) and only benefits on one of the four kids. How do you prevent this from occurring with your family? You take 30 minutes out of your valuable time to sit down with me and learn how the Knights will protect you in a Catholic way, a way our founder would be proud of. And not leave your family destitute.

The Colombian year 2018-2019 draws to a close this month. I am sorry that we did not meet our quota for new members or insurance. I ask myself what else could I have done to put us in the winning column. The question you should ask yourself is the same. We should be joyful however and thankful for the good men who joined Fair Oaks Council 6066 this Colombian year. My thanks and the Council's thanks to our members who joined in our recruitment efforts. The new members are men who will help grow our council and be prepared for success in all our programs of service in the future. Which one will grow to fill the office of Worthy Grand Knight? In the company of our Worthy Grand Knight SK Michael Ochoa, I was a delegate to the California Knights of Columbus 117th State Convention May 15 -19, 2019 in San Diego. In addition to the business meetings and election of State Officers we had opportunities to meet delegates from other councils around the state. Retaining active Knights and growing membership was always a topic of discussion. Daily Mass was celebrated by Bishops from San Diego as well as neighboring dioceses. It was rewarding to hear each celebrating bishop extol the benefits to church and community from all the work done by the Knights of Columbus. Most Rev. Kevin W. VANN, J.C.D., D.D. Bishop of Orange in California shared some of his memories of his involvement in the Knights following his father who was a Grand Knight. The Knights of Columbus remains the largest lay service organization in the Catholic Church. Let us keep it growing. As this is my last column I want to thank all of you who helped grow our council this year. Make it happen next year. Your participation has been a blessing.
If you are interested in being an officer next Colombian year, contact our appointed nomination commodity DGK Pat Miles, or DD John Brennan

State Convention
week. We portrayed how the leadership of this same group of men organized the Men's Day of Faith.
Our Fair Oaks Council won the inaugural Faith in Action Award for "Faith Activities" at the 117th California KofC State Convention. It was quite the honor to receive this distinction among nearly 800 other state councils.
We also showed how our council supported our Seminarians, including 2 brother Knights in the seminary and the support we shared of our Brother David Wagner in his early discernment. Finally, we spoke about our support and appeal for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, either by personally taking a holy hour (more than 20 of our Knights do this), as a council (each Tuesday of the month), and to encourage our Knights to attend the monthly "Adoration and Brew". What we accomplished illustrates what the Knights of Columbus strives for each council to achieve for the faith formation of our brother Knights and community. We set the bar pretty high!
By GK Michael Ochoa
The KofC changed it's programs this year for the first time in over 50 years. The order went from “Surge in Service” to “Faith in Action.” Faith in Action features fewer categories: Faith, Family, Community and Life. That means the competition for the 4 awards got a lot more tight! To win, councils needed to reflect to the awards committee their work through the year in each of these four categories. Our council brother knight and District 7 Deputy John Brennan coached our council and the others in district 7 how to align our activities to “Faith in Action”. I thank Worthy DD John for his persistence and guidance to insure our Council meet the basic requirements of the new program.
Finally yet importantly, our council placed 8th for the "Family Activities" award. We did this because of the support we provided for programs like Food for Families, Family of the Month/Year program, Keep Christ in Christmas program, support of our parish school, and the Consecration to the Holy Family. We also received Columbian award streamer for our banner to recognize our council’s donation to the State Columbian Charities program.
I believe our council received this first ever “Faith Activities” award in California because we illustrated to the selection committee what we did to encourage faith in our community. We demonstrated our commitment to “Faith” in particular by Thank you to all our Brother Knights for your the establishment of our council, Cursillo Round steadfast dedication to parish community and the Table. Knights of the Month

Br. Jim Philips, BR. Michael Karelius, PGK Bruce Fairchild receiving their Knight of the month award.
Family of the Month
Brian and Jeanne are an integral part of our parish community. They have raised a beautiful, tight-knit, Christ centered family and are a loving example to our council and parish community. As a family with eight children, many of them grown, they can still be seen attending mass together as much as they can. Throughout the years the boys have participated in various ministries including a steady run of alter servers. Their youngest and only daughter Elisabeth is involved in parish life including the young adult ministry and she recently lived her Cursillo weekend. In fact, more than half of the family, including both Jeanne and Brian have lived their Cursillo weekend. Jeanne also leads the parish Vocations Committee and is involved with several other ministries across the parish. Brian, Ben and David are all members of our Fair Oaks council. David is currently a Marine severing our country and Ben is currently in Mount Angels Seminary in Oregon. The Knights of Columbus and St. Mel parish love and appreciate Condon family. The resolution introduced by Congressman Louis C.
