Jesus, I Trust in You! Your new Grand Knight Daniel (Danny) Styer was born in the small Northern California town of Greenville. He served four years in the Marine Corps as a Microwave Radio Repairman. He earned a bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Sac State and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from UC Davis. He worked for fifteen years as an electrical engineer, sixteen years for Sac City College teaching engineering and the last four years as Dean of Mathematics Statistics and Engineering. He retired in October of 2019 and promptly walked the Portuguese Coastal route to Santiago de Compostela. He has been a Knight of Columbus for 31 years. He is married to Martha, whom he met at Sac State where she earned a second bachelors in Electrical Engineering and a masters in Biomedical Engineering. They were married in May of 1986. She retired from CalTrans in 2017 and is now the Physics teacher at Cristo Rey High School. They have been parishioners of Saint Mel Parish since 1996. They are proud parents of Marian and Louis, who both attended Saint Mel School. Marian graduated from Saint Francis High School and Louis graduated from Jesuit High School. Martha and Danny are looking forward to serving, with your assistance, the Knights of Columbus and the Saint Mel Parish. THE FATHER RICHARD DOHENY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FUND by John Brennan President of The Father Richard Doheny Religious Education Fund Can you name all the events that you’ve missed since the coronavirus pandemic began? Was the St. Mel Annual Rummage Sale in your top 10? For obvious reasons (all events cancelled, no large gatherings, sanitation concerns, etc.), the rummage sale had to be cancelled. Besides the fact that you may now need to hold on to those items for another year that you had planned on donating, or due to the additional time you’ve spent at home, you have already gathered those items and donated them elsewhere, there were other consequences from the cancellation of the rummage sale. The annual rummage sale has been coordinated by The Father Richard Doheny Religious Education Fund (The Fund), a tax-deductible organization setup by the Knights of Columbus Fair Oaks Council 6066 to fulfill scholarships for religious education. These scholarships have traditionally been given to graduating 8 th Graders planning to attend a Catholic High School and to Seminarians. Proceeds from the rummage sale has helped fund these annual scholarships, with any additional funds being invested to potentially create a self-funded endowment for years to come. Although the Directors of The Fund would prefer to not withdrawal any funds from the investments, this year may be an exception since the rummage sale is the main source of income, besides donations received from individuals for memorial remembrances and other tax-deductible donations of cash or cars. Another article in this month’s Navigator is a reprint of one from the June 2019 edition which provides additional information on what The Fund is and why it was created by Fair Oaks Council 6066. If you have any questions about The Fund, feel free to contact me at 916-548-4962 or JPBrennan7262@gmail.com. http://www.donateforcharity.com/charity-car-donation-form/? charity=The%20Father%20Richard%20Doheny%20Religious% 20Education%20Fund From the Navigator Cover Congratulations to Father Richard Doheny Scholarship winner Aaron C. and the Phil F. Duffy Scholarship winner to Sophie D. Both of these 2020 St. Mel graduates are recipients of these awards for outstanding academic achievement, character, community service and commitment to Catholic High School Education.
Knights Tied for Most Financially Strong Life Insurer in North America
Financial strength and stability are on a lot of people's minds lately, and it's reassuring to know that the Knights stand tall among the competition. However this unprecedented international crisis may be impacting your family, please know that I am here to help you review your situation, and discuss how the Knights may be able to help.
To respect social distancing protocols - we have transitioned to virtual meetings. I can meet with you over the computer whenever you'd like. So let's chat! Together we can figure out how the Knights' best-in-class financial strength can help protect you and your family. Vivat Jesus! John Mueller, Fraternal Insurance Agent September 2020 Navigator

A Note from District Deputy John Brennan Knights of Columbus – It’s what we do. As the saying goes, “actions speak louder than words.” Faith in Action is even more powerful! With Jesus as our guide, our actions send a powerful message. Focusing on another category of the Faith in Action program from Supreme this month, we can make a difference in our Community. We are in unchartered times and we may not be able to gather together, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a difference. Here is a list of recommended programs that Supreme recommends we conduct to enhance our community involvement and improve the lives of others: Helping Hands
Coats for Kids
Global Wheelchair Mission
Habitat for Humanity
Catholic Citizen Essay Contest
Disaster Preparedness
Leave No Neighbor Behind
Free Throw Championship
While a couple of these activities require interaction with others, such as Helping Hands and Habitat for Humanity, others can be performed socially distanced. Still others require raising money for causes for the less-fortunate among us. The Global Wheelchair Mission is an initiative to purchase wheelchairs at a significantly reduced rate and donate them all around the world. Giving a wheelchair to someone in need provides the gift of mobility and greater independence.
One program, though, that can be conducted even with all the constraints of COVID-19, and is vitally important because of the constraints of COVID-19, is Leave No Neighbor Behind. As stated on Supreme’s website, www.KofC.org, “As the coronavirus pandemic continues, our duty is to lead our families, protect our parishes, and serve our communities, remembering always that where there’s a need, there’s a Knight. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson has challenged Knights to take this moment as an opportunity to “deepen our commitment to the very principles which define us: charity, unity and fraternity.” Five suggested service activities in this program include: Support Your Brother Knights Support Your Parish Support Your Community Feed the Hungry Participate in Blood Drives
There is not enough space to summarize the outlines that have already been created and posted to www.KofC.org on how to implement these programs. My request is that you visit Supreme’s website and let your Council’s Community Director know which program interests you. You do make the difference! One person at a time! Please contact me if you have any questions. I am here to help. If you need help hosting a virtual meeting, I can help with that, too! Our Knights of Columbus General Agent, Carlos Gutierrez, generously donated a Go-To-Meeting Virtual Meeting subscription to our District and I’m making it available to anyone who needs the use of it. I will host the meeting for you and you can conduct your business. Contact me at 916-548-4962 or JPBrennan7262@gmail.com. Vivat Jesus! John Brennan District Deputy District 7
Golf FUNdraiser is Almost Here!
By: Tournament Committee Member John Brennan We are about 3 weeks away from our first, biggest (only?) fundraiser of this Columbian year, the 2020 Knights of Columbus Golf FUNdraiser on September 19. All system GO! under COVID-19 guidelines. Those guidelines are updated daily for the safety of all. Help is still needed. We have room for individual golfers and additional foursomes, please call me and let me know if you want to join us. We will pencil you in and see you at Rancho Murieta on September 19th for the shotgun start at 12:30pm, with registration beginning at 10:00am. We also need volunteers to help with registration and other activities throughout the day, from 9am – 6pm. Even if you are only available for a couple of hours and would like to help, we welcome your support for this event. In addition, we are requesting donations for raffle prizes. Our Council has always been very generous with donations for every event. With the uncertainty of what events we will be able to hold this Columbian Year, raffles provide us with additional revenue so we’d like to make the most of this one. Donations can either be dropped off at the Parish Office or you can contact me at 916-548-4962 and I will make arrangements to pick the item(s) up from you.
Finally, Personal Sponsorships are gladly accepted. Our annual budget has been cut by more than half this Columbian Year, meaning that many of the charities we usually support will receive only half or less than we normally provide, while others will not receive a donation from Fair Oaks Council 6066 this year. We understand that everyone has been affected by the coronavirus, but should you have the ability to make a donation to our council this year, now would be the opportune time, solidifying our Council’s commitment to support our charities. Personal Sponsorships are typically $20, but any donation amount will be much appreciated.
