REMEMBER MEMBERSHIP! Now you can do it online... By Membership Director. PGK SK Frank Abi-Nader
Like much of everything we do today you can do it online. You can sign up new members on line and even earn a $50 gift card. Please see the July 2018 issue of the Golden State Knightletter recently sent to you. Any member who recruits 5 members between now and September 30 will receive a $50.gift card for Knightgear and free shipping! Earn your Knightgear NOW! The new Online Membership initiative is live throughout the United States and Canada. A brief video accessible through the on-line Knightletter explains the program and how it can be used as a powerful tool to help our council recruit. It only takes 5 minutes to sign up a new member online. Visit our For Members page for more information. Our stated goal by our Worthy Grand Knight Michael Ochoa, is 14 new members this Colombian year, 5 by November. We have a start. One new member, Brother Mark Montalvo was admitted into our ranks of Knighthood as a “follower of the Great Christopher Columbus” at the First Degree Admission ceremony on Tuesday July 3, 2018. If you haven’t met Brother Mark welcome him at our next general meeting, Every member is a member of the recruitment team. Have you invited someone to join the Knights of Columbus this month? Personal invitations always work best. Talk to them. Text them. Email them. You will find samples and more information on the For Members page. We all want to see our council grow and share with as many men as possible the rewards of Knighthood and bring men closer to Christ. Here is a DGK Pat Miles and New Brother Knight Mark Montallist of some events which present opportunities vo fittingly the degree honoree was SK Quinent Charles (QC) Miles, Pat’s father whom went to see our where your help is needed for recruitment: Lord this past June. Not only was QC a decorated • 7/29/2018 Membership Drive (coincides flyer in WWII but he was a well-respected educator with the Blood Drive Breakfast) back home in South Dakota. Membership and recruitment material will be available at each event. Member help will be needed to engage men who are present and interest them in becoming a Knight. Let’s do it! “Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

Cursillo (short course in Chris anity) is a movement within the church that supports our walk of faith through a simple method (Piety, Study and Acon). The format includes a 3-day weekend filled with learning, growth, fellowship, and worship. It is a prac cal and remarkable experience! It is different from other retreats, in that, the weekend doesn’t end on Sunday but con nues throughout the life of the “Cursillista” as described by the term “4th day” or the rest of your life. There are group/ friendship reunions held weekly or monthly where everyone supports your faith journey. The 4th day is focused on PRAYER, STUDY and ACTION. Cursillo has touched the life of millions of Catholics worldwide and has also been established by other faiths and organiza ons such as Catholic High Schools (Kairos), Marriage Encounter and many others. It is more than a movement; it is a lifestyle and greater commitment to our faith. There is a growing and vibrant community within the Sacramento diocese for both men and women. Many council brothers have lived their weekend and con nue living their 4th day in their group mee ngs. Cursillo will help you with your prayer life and study. You are already preforming great ac on by the good works you do with the Knights of Columbus. I lived my weekend in 2015. I was on team 2017 where I meet Michael Ochoa. Because of Michael and my 4th day group, I became a Knight. I am on Team again this year, and I hope to see you. Cursillo started in Spain in the 1940’s and, today, is a worldwide movement. The movement is recognized by the Pope as member of the Interna onal Catholic Organiza ons of the Pon fical Council for the Laity in Rome. The Cursillo is supported by the Roman Catholic Church. It is joined to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Sacramento diocese. For online informa on and registra on go to h p://www.sacramentocursillo.org or contact Denny Shunta at precursillo@sacramentocursillo.org or 916-952.4502.

Council & Our Community
Our Council budget line for the Capitol Air Show, (44C) esƟmated the council would earn $1200 from the proceeds of the event this year however, we actually earned, $1,599.05, nearly double (99.54%) what the council made from the Airshow in 2017. There was zero budget line in our council budget for this event and all proceeds are for St. Mel School. Thank you to the volunteers from our council and St. Mel School parent volunteers for the many hours selling over 1000 hotdog and two pallets of soda to make this happen!

Ryan O’Brien By: Brother Pat Miles
We plan to have a special guest in attendance at the November 1st general membership meeting. Brother Ryan O’Brian, a member of our council, flew 35 combat missions as a B-24 navigator in Europe during World War II. His military decorations include: The French Legion of Honor (an award established by Na-
poleon Bonaparte), The Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals, the Purple Heart, the Africa Mediterranean & European campaign Medal with three Battle Stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Ryan was born on March 19, 1922, and grew up in Los Angeles. He graduated from Mount Carmel High School in the San Fernando Valley in 1941. He was offered a scholarship to play football for Loyola University, but turned it down because he wanted to join the Army-Air Corps Cadet Program. Air Corps recruiters told him he would have to wait to be drafted before he could apply; so he became an apprentice brick layer and got married. He was finally drafted in February 1943, and was accepted into the Cadet Program. He attended basic training at Keesler Field, Mississippi, then entered the Cadet Program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he obtained the equivalent of a 2-year degree in six months. There, he became fascinated with astronomy and asked to be

trained as a navigator, but decided to switch to Bombardier because they allowed you to bring your family with you to the training course conducted at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas. There were 600 students in his class at Ellington, but after two months they sent 250 of them, including Ryan, to the Pan American Navigator Training School at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. The course was six months long; they trained in sea planes. Upon graduation he received, his navigator wings and second lieutenant bars. Next, he went to March Field, near Riverside, CA to be trained in the four-engine B-24 Liberator. That’s where he was joined up with his other crewmembers. Ryan (age 22) was the oldest officer, the Pilot (age 20) was also from Los Angeles, the Copilot (age 21) and Bombardier (age 19) were both from Seattle, WA. The six enlisted crewmembers ranged in age from 33 to 19. The 33-year old was nicknamed “Pops.” After a dozen training flights at March, they were sent to Hamilton Field, near San Rafael, CA. There, they picked up a new B-24 and were issued side arms, then headed for Europe, via Newfoundland, the Azores, and Northern Africa. Their final destination was Terretta Field.

Support the Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary is a worldwide Catholic Organization that seeks to serve God and his Church through prayer, especially the Rosary and good works. Our mission is to foster holiness in our members and evangelize the Catholic faith under the Holy Spirit and in union with Mary. We meet weekly to pray the Rosary and receive an assignment of 2 hours a week, such as visitation to convalescent hospitals and homes to pray the Rosary and bring Holy Communion to the sick.. Our Brother Knights, especially those whom are retired and can make time during the work week are encouraged to volunteer for this ministry. Please contact Brother Bill Savage or his wife Joyce, joycesav@sbcglobal.net if you can help. Page 7

Clara’s House By GK Mike Ochoa After the 9/29 move of Clara’s house and right before our November General Meeting I had the honor to meet with Sister Kathy Wood and St. Mel core volunteer Marth (Marti) Rusnak. I visited them to see how their transition was going after their recent relocation from their previous mid-town location to now the second floor of Pioneer Church at 27th and L streets. I got to discover how the clinic is run and the impact it has on the people they see. As I’m certain you understand the cost of doing business in the medical industry is very expensive. And Sister Kathy and her pool of volunteers are surviving on a shoestring budget to serve the marginalized who fall between the healthcare cracks, such as homeless, undocumented workers and others. I found the Holy Spirit has provided the clinic ways to say afloat. I also found this ministry does need some help. Unlike the Carmelite Auxiliary whom our council provided assistance for their primary luncheon fundraiser this year, Clara’s house does not have a standing “fundraiser” to raise money for their ministry. I’m hopeful next year our event calendar can include an event to help this wonderful ministry more formally. But, at the same time, I am very thankful our Council was able to support the moving costs for Clara’s house using funds allotted for our health service ministry.

Helping our Parish in their Faith Formation Faith Director Chuck Friedrich
To help the parish offset the cost purchasing for our fellow St. Mel parishioners the Matthew Kelly book titled "The Biggest Lie in Christianity” our Council Faith Director may submit a request for reimbursement for the funds available in our Faith Director Activities Budget of $100 (Budget Line 61B), plus an additional $400 available in the "Director Activities Miscellaneous Funds" (Budget Line 61G). Currently our Council Brother Knight Dan Styer made over $1500 investment of his own money for enough books for our parish. Knowing in previous years the council directors budget is hardly spent a reimbursement request for $500 may be submitted at our next Council meeting on 12/8 for consideration when bills are paid. the United States have donated money and gift cards and they are eternally grateful for the charity provided to his community. Because of GK Jim’s background in fundraising, he is assisting St. Thomas More parish to establish a special 501C(3) status to accept large contributions and has done an exemplary job managing the distribution of monies and items to his council. Providentially because of GK Jims past experience he joked he is a new knight, serving in just his second year in our order he was elected Grand Knight this past July. Talk about having the right man for the job at the right time! He said at this time, sending money or gift cards is still vitally important since the first wave of contributions is about to end. He said a second wave of money is
Council 7773 and our neighbors at St. Thomas More in Paradise experienced firsthand a devastating wildfire that destroyed their community. Sixty-Nine families from the council either lost their homes or have been displaced by the fire, including GK Jim Collins who said they have not been allowed back in their homes since the fires swept through their community in late November. They can only check damage with the aid of relief organization drones. GK Jim did say, the first wave of financial support has come to his council already. Checks for individual council members approved for relief through California Columbian Charities have been filtering in. Some amounting to $3000 per family. He also said relief was provided by several bay area councils that sent over $10,000 in gift cards and back packs directly to the council. As those in our council might empathize with GK Jim who said when I spoke to him the contributions of gift cards have been his greatest blessing simply because the process for distributing cash, even if received from California Columbian Charities is difficult to perform quickly. Image our process for gaining trustee and council approvals before we write a check. Then think about the financial secretary and treasurer Council 7773 GK: Jim Collins, Fr. Godwin, Lauren Gregorio & Plant Manager Greg in his council, whom also were impacted by the Kidder fires, to find time to administer the cash disbursement process for knights and their families in need. GK Jim and his officer team have gone be- needed to help with big ticket items, such as helping yond the call of duty. GK Jim did say the process for knights with down payments for cars destroyed by the getting the California Columbian Charities checks to fire and other large purchases. I did inquire if he needhis members was getting easier, but he still fields calls ed our council to physically make the journey to Parafrom knight every day seeking status of assistance dise to help clean up yet. He said, for now, no. But checks. he’s certain they will need some help once they are GK Jim also said councils and assemblies from across allowed to go back to their homes. I asked him to keep us in the loop and promised to check back again to see how things are going. As you may or may not know, Council 7773 has a special Fair Oaks connection GK Jim Collins was once neighbors to Father McSweeny and they are great friends. As the media attention wans from this dire situation please keep our brothers and sisters, their families, emergency responders and all those effected by this disaster in your prayers. Please visit http:// www.stmparadise.org/ for more information. We will be voting this coming meeting on 12/8 to send $2500 to Council 7773. St. Patrick’s Day Dinner On Saturday March 17th, our council held its annual St. Patrick’s Dinner in the St. Mel Parish Center. Once again, the event was a great success, serving about 140 guests, and raising about $2500 for charity.
Our musical entertainment for the evening was DJ’d by Bro. Andrew Cuhna, who assembled a charming mix of Irish tunes. After dinner, while our guests were enjoying their dessert, we were further entertained by the dancers from the Kennelly School of Irish Dance. As always, they put on a delightful show. Kennelly School has been dancing for us for many years and

Wheelchair Sunday Pancake Breakfast - April 7th Council #6066 will be holding our annual Pancake Breakfast to support the American Wheelchair Mission on Sunday, April 7th, after the 8am and 10am masses in the Parish Center. Last year the efforts of our volunteers and, the generous tax-deductible donations of our patrons, resulted in our ability to deliver 10 new wheelchairs to veterans and other individuals in need of mobility. Normally these same 10 wheelchairs would cost over $5,000 in a medical supply store but, because the Knights of Columbus through the American Wheelchair Mission is able to purchase these chairs by the container load the individual price is reduced to approximately $150 each. I hope that you and your families will come and support this worthy cause.
For more information visit: https://amwheelchair.org/knights-of-columbus/ Our menu this year will be: Pancakes, Waffles, Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Bacon, Fruit, Orange Juice, Coffee and Tea. The cost will be: $5/Adult, $3/Child, $15/Family. Additional tax-deductible donations will be gladly accepted To make this event work I need your help. Please consider volunteering for one of the following tasks: •

Brian and Jeanne are an integral part of our parish community. They have raised a beautiful, tight-knit, Christ centered family and are a loving example to our council and parish community. As a family with eight children, many of them grown, they can still be seen attending mass together as much as they can. Throughout the years the boys have participated in various ministries including a steady run of alter servers. Their youngest and only daughter Elisabeth is involved in parish life including the young adult ministry and she recently lived her Cursillo weekend. In fact, more than half of the family, including both Jeanne and Brian have lived their Cursillo weekend. Jeanne also leads the parish Vocations Committee and is involved with several other ministries across the parish. Brian, Ben and David are all members of our Fair Oaks council. David is currently a Marine severing our country and Ben is currently in Mount Angels Seminary in Oregon. The Knights of Columbus and St. Mel parish love and appreciate Condon family. Congratulations! “Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

The Murray family amazes our parish community by the way they help in the formation of our youth and young adults. Both Jenni and Br. Dave influenced so many lives it's difficult to put a number on it. Jenni's leadership of the Vocations Committee has reaped many rewards for our parish; including assisting and encouraging several young men to enroll in the seminary. Several became priests in our diocese. Br. Dave is very supportive the vocations ministry too; often he and Jenni have taken several trips to Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon to visit our parish seminarians. They treat the like family! Br. has even become the renowned "Cookie" aficionado because of his cookie distribution when he visits. Finally, and just as important, is the Murray family dedication to the St. Mel parish Altar Server program. Both Jenni and Dave have taken the formation of our parish altar servers to a new level. Between Jenni's organization and Br. Dave's ability to apply the knowledge he received as a trained Diocesan catechist to the Parish 8th grade confirmation class, they are able relate to the children and reach them like no other parish ministry. Both Jenni and Dave demonstrate to our council and parish how to get the younger generation involved in our faith. They get the youth excited to serve in the mass with both reverence and enthusiasm! Because of their efforts, the St. Mel Altar Sever program is the model for the Diocese of Sacramento. They are truly worthy of Family of the Month recognition. Summer Parish Drive, August 4th By Br. Chris Ward
How long have you been a Knight? Do you remember brothers Al Dennis or Lloyd Bousilman? How about Joe Fernandez or Earl Grass? Before your time? Maybe brothers Dennis Reibold and Dwight McCormick. What do they all have in common? They were there every Sunday Blood Drive and Pancake Breakfast when they were around. Why? Because they knew that their selfless act of a lifesaving blood donation was going to change the lives of people in their community all over northern California. Gentlemen (and families), we have a legacy to perpetuate. Many patients suffer from life threatening illnesses that need Blood. Summer is a particularly tough time- regular blood donors are on vacation and mass blood drives at the mall or schools just don't draw as many donors. The need for donations is constant and you can make a difference on Sunday, August 4th here at St. Mel. DONATE BLOOD between 8:15AM and 11:30AM in Doheny Hall. This is a work of charity and love that doesn't require more than an hour of your time. Breakfast is free to all donors. Can't donate or just want to help at the Breakfast, I can use a few, good volunteers to help. Call me, Chris Ward at 916-834-1772 or e-mail me at wardchrisj@hotmail.com. Continue our legacy this summer-DONATE BLOOD!

Vacation Bible School By GK Michael Ochoa
Page 12
When Sonja asked me if the Knights could provide a meal to the youth volunteers, I jumped at the chance. After all, our own children reaped the benefit of all the hard work of her cadre of moms, dads, scouts, the parish office and many more. It was amazing to see so many excellent stewards at St. Mel volunteering time and talent to improve the youth ministry and children’s programs at the Parish.
Vacation Bible School (VBS) was a great success! Our council congratulates and thanks Sonja Herne, Jaden Herne and Michael D’Incecco for spearheading VBS and giving it life. Several of our knights’ grandchildren, children, nieces and nephews participated in VBS, we can’t thank them enough for making this happen.
