“For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 As a brother Knight, I believe these words from our Lord and Savior from the Gospel of Mark should resonate with each of us as a Knight. As Jesus did not come to this earth ‘”to be served”, neither did we join the Knights “to be served.” In fact, isn’t it quite the opposite? We joined the Knights to serve.

Knight of the month

DGK Pat Miles and District 7 Deputy John Brennan recognize Br. Sergio Perera as the May Knight of the Month. As one of our council newer transfers from the bay area, Br. Sergio jumped right in to chair the Mother's and Father's Day, Spiritual Bouquet remembrance cards. He did a great job for this long standing council and parish tradition. Thanks Br. Sergio!! By: Brother Mike Allison

Family of the month

The Murray family amazes our parish community by the way they help in the formation of our youth and young adults. Both Jenni and Br. Dave influenced so many lives it's difficult to put a number on it. Jenni's leadership of the Vocations Committee has reaped many rewards for our parish; including assisting and encouraging several young men to enroll in the seminary. Several became priests in our diocese. Br. Dave is very supportive the vocations ministry too; often he and Jenni have taken several trips to Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon to visit our parish seminarians. They treat the like family! Br. has even become the renowned "Cookie" aficionado because of his cookie distribution when he visits. Finally, and just as important, is the Murray family dedication to the St. Mel parish Altar Server program. Both Jenni and Dave have taken the formation of our parish altar servers to a new level. Between Jenni's organization and Br. Dave's ability to apply the knowledge he received as a trained Diocesan catechist to the Parish 8th grade confirmation class, they are able relate to the children and reach them like no other parish ministry. Both Jenni and Dave demonstrate to our council and parish how to get the younger generation involved in our faith. They get the youth excited to serve in the mass with both reverence and enthusiasm! Because of their efforts, the St. Mel Altar Sever program is the model for the Diocese of Sacramento. They are truly worthy of Family of the Month recognition. Congratulations! “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS A Note from District Deputy MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE

Recently I lost a dear friend of mine. He had a small life policy with another company under $100k in value. A small retirement fund that he was putting money into. My friend a lifelong Catholic, a Brother Knight passed away at the age of 58. Most of us would consider this too early for our Lord to call someone home but unfortunately we have no control over his plan for any of us. A lot of the Brother Knights I visit feel they are set. This week I had an appointment with a Brother Knight who knew about our appointment but wasn't there. He left the entire meeting up to his wife because he had to plan out some cooking event! My time is valuable is so is yours. I set time aside from my work and family to help families plan so they do not end up in the same predicament as my friend did. The Brother finally showed up as his wife and I concluded our meeting. She had told me that he took the 50% pension option at his job. I asked her what she was planning on doing when her income drops off by 50% when he passes. There was the deer in the headlights look. He remained silent. I informed them that there are two options, one is life insurance to create a pension to replace the one from his job and the other is a settlement option on his retirement funds which will provide guaranteed income with no market risk. Keep in mind that we take on market risk when we are trying to grow our money prior to retirement. Once we are in retirement mode we want guaranteed payouts and limited or no risk as we will need those funds to get us through retirement in case the good lord doesn't call us home early. In closing my friend has four kids, two adults and two minors. His wife will reach the "blackout period" with social security survivor benefits on three of the four kids. She will receive no survivor benefits until she is 60(7 years) and only benefits on one of the four kids. How do you prevent this from occurring with your family? You take 30 minutes out of your valuable time to sit down with me and learn how the Knights will protect you in a Catholic way, a way our founder would be proud of. And not leave your family destitute.

Happy New Year! Yes, July 1st is the beginning of the new Columbian Year! Most Councils have a new slate of officers, or many of the officers are in a new role. Help is needed everywhere! Past officers can assist by being available to answer question for the new officers by offering advice to help the Council get off to a quick start. Before you know it, you will be planning for your Christmas celebrations. Don’t let the first few months fly by before you jump in to help! First of all, no Knights of Columbus event or activity is going to be successful without volunteers. Everyone I know has a very busy schedule. And I know that every Council appreciates every volunteer minute that its members provide. To assist with your busy schedule, your Council will be publishing, if they haven’t already done so, the suggested and/or approved activities for the new Columbian Year. Please take time to review this calendar and see which activities you would like to participate in, either by helping at the event or by attending it. Personal family events are always going to be a priority, but don’t forget to plan for some of the Knights’ events, too. I find the joy of being a Knight truly comes being around and working with like-minded Catholic men and their families. Is this the year that you are going to help your Council be a Star Council? Do you know what it takes to be a Star Council? You cannot achieve goals that you do not set. Reach for Star Council! It’s more than just bringing in new members and protecting families through new insured Brothers. Council forms need to be completed timely, Safe Environment requirements for specific officers and Directors must be completed, and specific programs must be conducted during the Columbian Year. Remember Faith in Action? It’s still here and it will help you achieve your goals. In each of the four categories, there is one required program that must be completed to achieve Star Council. These programs include: Faith – Spiritual Reflection Program Family – Consecration to the Holy Family (is it scheduled in your Council for Advent or Lent?) Community – Helping Hands Life – Novena for Life Additional information on these programs and all the other featured and Supreme-recommended programs can be found at www.KofC.org. Which program or activity do you want to make the commitment for now while your calendar is still open? The old Knight’s phrase is still relevant: You will get more out of it than you put in! Vivat Jesus! John Brennan District Deputy District 7
