“Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

Someone told me recently that volunteering with the Knights is just a way socialize. It is not “real work, it’s an opportunity to have fun and interact with others in our community.” When I first heard these comments and I had a hard time understanding this point of view. I thought, how can he say that after this past year? With the new Knights of Columbus “Faith in Action” program, our council took great efforts to meet Supremes’ challenge and the challenge of our own District Deputy to focus our events around, “Faith”, “Community”, “Family” and “Life”. We aren’t a “social club”, the Knights of Columbus offers men a place to lead their families and communities in faith and service and put their Faith into Action!

Awards applications in time for the State Convention later this month, I realized we need to do a better job in telling how we bring Christ to others. With as much compliments as we’ve gotten on the Navigator this year, we’re making another change. Throughout the pages of this publication look for any of the four icons above as you read the articles or thumb through the photos. We going to start to organize our Navigator to draw attention to our response to faith, community, family and life. All our events and program revolve around these four categories. As the Faith in Action Guide Books2 says, “woven within these four categories is the opportunity to share something that all generations and cultures within our organization seek

in their membership in the Knights of Columbus. The Faith in action model allows us to come together to share our faith, celebrate fraternity with our families, and do what we do best — stand shoulder to shoulder in service to our community and to defend life at all stages and in every condition.” That is the Knights of Columbus. That is the perception I want our council to leave for the next generation. – GK Michael Ochoa

it hit me like a ton of bricks. Just because “Supreme” changed, their emphasis to “Faith in Action” on July 1st 2018 that doesn’t mean it erased the memory or perceptions of the Knights right here at St. Mel. Then I remembered the article I read on the Supremes’ Website called, “For the Knights of Columbus, it’s more than a fish fry”1 I realized although our Knights narrative changed nationally, I need to do a better helping to change the narrative locally. We are social, but we are not a social club. We are the hand and legs of Christ here to spread the good news to our families, our parish community and greater community. Simply put, we bring Christ to others! As the officer team completed the State May 2019 Navigator

I knew the volunteer effort it would take and I knew I couldn’t pull this off without the support of our pastor, parish and council. She and her amazing husband, our worthy DD John, both dedicated themselves to pitch in if I ever decided to chair this event. She planted a seed. When I was elected Grand Knight I met with Father Aldrin to review the calendar of events I was developing, I included the fish fry. Fr. Aldrin loved the idea! Then I ran the idea past our Parish Business Director Bob Mayer, he loved the idea too! I knew then I didn’t have any more excuses and added it to my proposed 2018/19 event calendar. I’m eternally grateful to our Council for approving. When Lent 2019 rolled around and I had to put my plan into action, I dusted off the event reports for the St. Joseph Delta Council 10702 fish fry that I helped

run for 3 years. I used these reports for our council budget and planned for $5,500 for gross receipts. Knowing we had some hard capital investments to make I budgeted $4,300 expenses for $1200 in proposed earnings. It turns out our fish fry did very well. We collected $4479.68 in gross receipts and $2515.54 in expenses. We raised $2,818.14 in net earnings. Our capital investment was only $273.86, much less than planned. I had no idea this event would draw 42 people to volunteer. I also certainly didn’t fathom the idea that 11 of 22 Knights that volunteered haven’t helped for any Knights event in years! Nor did I realize 6 of our wives would also jump in! The table above breaks out

The fish fry is a motivating factor to get our brothers and sisters to spend their Fridays in Church and with their faith community. Moreover, yes we filled that Doheny Hall for 6 weeks! But I have to say, the fun wasn’t just made by those attending our fish frys. Ask any of those 39 volunteers

you, next year make the time and get involved. I thank everyone who helped this event. I especially thank my family for donating your time both in helping at the event and the sacrifice while I was away. Finally, I want to thank my boss who I think sometimes thought I was moonlighting as a restaurateur rather than volunteering my time at church!

how much fun they had! Working the fish fry was great fun. Sure, we worked hard, but we did it with enthusiasm and teamwork. We shared the same purpose. If you can’t remember the last time you volunteered for something that brought you joy I challenge May 2019 Navigator

A Note from District Deputy John Brennan

programs help us evangelize our faith by helping others and bringing them closer to God through us. And the Life programs help us show our commitment to the value of every single life. Is there anything you can do to be practicing your faith any better? Many people find it difficult to make changes on their own, but think about this: you belong to the finest Catholic fraternal Order and there are Brothers in your Council that would be happy to take the journey with you. Offering your time and your talents is the beginning. You will get more out of practicing than you put in.

Practice and Preparation

My son and I are planning to run our second marathon together on June 2nd, just weeks away. To run a marathon, you don’t just wake up one morning and decide, “I’m going to go run 26.2 miles today”, without proper planning and preparation. That is, if you want to succeed without too much agony. You know, even with proper planning and preparation, things can still go wrong. In our first attempt together, we fin- Vivat Jesus, ished, but we missed our goal time. If at first you John Brennan don’t succeed…. District Deputy If we just continued to go through the motions of running, it’s not likely we will reach our goal. Our train- District 7 ing has included practicing faster short runs, slower long runs, and taking nutrition and water breaks over miles and miles of roads and trails. Through hard work and being focused will give us a better chance at achieving our goal. All of this practicing is to help make us stronger and better at what we are doing. It won’t be by accident if we are able to obtain our goal

this time. I was recently reminded of a phrase I’m sure we all have heard before about practicing. The phrase I’m referring to is the one when a person is revering to someone else as being a “practicing Catholic.” What comes to mind when you hear that phrase? That’s a loaded question! Depending on who you ask, you are likely to hear many varied definitions. What is your definition? Like running, if I’m just going through the motions of my faith, I’m not going to grow and become stronger in my beliefs. Unlike running, as I get older and my running skills and abilities are diminishing (my fastest days are definitely behind me!), I can still grow and strengthen my beliefs by practicing my faith through piety, study, and action (Cursillo anyone?).

If you are interested in being an officer next Colombian year, contact our appointed nominaon commodity DGK Pat Miles, or DD John Brennan

Faith in Action – it’s a reoccurring theme! What a wonderful way to improve your life. The new Faith in Action programs offer so much to help you practice Catholicism. The Faith programs are intended to help you study your beliefs. Our Family programs are designed to focus on the domestic church, the family unit, and make it stronger. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FAIR OAKS COUNCIL 6066

TEE IT UP FOR CHARITY THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FAIR OAKS COUNCIL HAS BEEN ACTIVE SINCE 1968 AND
RESIDES AT ST. MEL CHURCH IN FAIR OAKS. THE FUNDS WE GENERATE FROM THIS ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT PROVIDES THE PRIMARY FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR OUR ANNUAL CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE MEMBERS AND WIDOWS OF OUR COUNCIL IN NEED, ST. VINCENT DePAUL, SCOUTING AND MANY OTHER PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.

IN ADDITION TO THE CHARITIES WE SUPPORT ANNUALLY, THIS YEAR, WE ARE DEDICATING 30% OF ALL FUNDS RAISED TO THE VETERANS COMMUNITY CENTER IN CITRUS HEIGHTS.

THEY ARE A LOCAL NON- PROFIT

ORGANIZATION, MANAGED BY JIM AND GENE ROUNSAVELL, DEDICATED TO PROVIDING VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES FREE AND COMPREHENSIVE ACCESS TO SERVICES AND PROGRAMS WITHIN AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT.

The Veterans Community Center is located in Citrus Heights. It is the only community center like it in our area. The closest veterans community centers are in Fresno a n d R e d d i n g . The center was originally founded to, and still does, teach disabled vets to play golf. The center, however, has expanded its scope of support to all vets. Sometimes, we forget the vets who served without visible wounds.

To promote and strengthen the patriotic spirit of the civic community, here’s a quote that brings it all home: When the peace treaty is signed, the war isn't over for the veterans, or the family. It's just starting….. Karl

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE

Recently I lost a dear friend of mine. He had a small life policy with another company under $100k in value. A small retirement fund that he was putting money into. My friend a lifelong Catholic, a Brother Knight passed away at the age of 58. Most of us would consider this too early for our Lord to call someone home but unfortunately we have no control over his plan for any of us. A lot of the Brother Knights I visit feel they are set. This week I had an appointment with a Brother Knight who knew about our appointment but wasn't there. He left the entire meeting up to his wife because he had to plan out some cooking event! My time is valuable is so is yours. I set time aside from my work and family to help families plan so they do not end up in the same predicament as my friend did. The Brother finally showed up as his wife and I concluded our meeting. She had told me that he took the 50% pension option at his job. I asked her what she was planning on doing when her income drops off by 50% when he passes. There was the deer in the headlights look. He remained silent. I informed them that there are two options, one is life insurance to create a pension to replace the one from his job and the other is a settlement option on his retirement funds which will provide guaranteed income with no market risk. Keep in mind that we take on market risk when we are trying to grow our money prior to retirement. Once we are in retirement mode we want guaranteed payouts and limited or no risk as we will need those funds to get us through retirement in case the good lord doesn't call us home early. In closing my friend has four kids, two adults and two minors. His wife will reach the "blackout period" with social security survivor benefits on three of the four kids. She will receive no survivor benefits until she is 60(7 years) and only benefits on one of the four kids. How do you prevent this from occurring with your family? You take 30 minutes out of your valuable time to sit down with me and learn how the Knights will protect you in a Catholic way, a way our founder would be proud of. And not leave your family destitute.

"When the Venerable Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, he did so for three reasons: to support men in their faith, to bring greater charity to their communities, and to protect the financial stability of their families.". Our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, makes this statement as part of his welcome video to First Degree Knights. As Knights we continue to be guided by these founding principles. and more. The Knights of Columbus charity extends beyond our Council 6066 into areas of our state where disaster has occured and throughout the world through actions by our Supreme council. Bring these points home to prospective members and anyone interested in the Knights of Columbus. The various insurance plans available to members are designed to protect families from devasation in case of injury or death. The gift of faith is heightened when members pray and serve and learn their faith with their brothers, Lasting friendships are formed. Someone will always be there to lend you a hand. When talking to a propesctive Knight let him know he will be joining a group of friends who share his values of faith and family. ___________________________________________

RCIA – Evening of Testimony GK Michael Ochoa

In support of the St. Mel Parish RCIA program, our council is sponsoring their Evening of Testimony where some of their RCIA Students and others share their conversion stories. Participants are encouraged to bring their non-Catholic and not yet Christian friends and family to this event. They are hoping that after hearing their stories attendees might consider joining our RCIA class of 2020! Our council will provide the food, and our Worthy Advocate and Brother Knight Bill Heilmann may even provide some music! The event attendances is typically small, about 50. Their speaker list so far it includes Claude Jones, Karla Jardon, and former Knight Tony Quezeda. The event will finish at about 7:30 p.m. We need about 6 volunteers to help support this event, see https://signup.com/go/WfAtoan or contact me to learn how, we have shifts from noon to 8:30. I highly encourage if you cannot volunteer, please support the event by attending. You'll hear some awesome first hand conversion stories that will surely make an impression. There is no charge to attend. This event is one of the ways our council is supports the propagation of our faith and the RCIA program.

Lent 2019 Faith and Life Activities Complete! By GK Michael Ochoa

For the first time ever this council launched two new activities that are core activities for the Knights of Columbus Faith and Action Program: Consecration to the Holy Family (Family) and Novena for Life (Life). Consecration to the Holy Family activity was designed to encourage families to attend Mass, pray together, go to confession together, attend Stations of the Cross as a family, and together recite the Conse-

cration Prayer prior to each evening meal and prior to the start of Sunday Mass. The weekend prior to the start of Lent we introduced this program to the parish with announcements at each Mass. In addition, we asked families to commit themselves to prepare for the consecration by signing up on-line or in the back of the church. As a result, just under 10 families from the parish officially signed up. The consecration happened on the weekend of April 6-7 where every family recited the prayer for the Consecration to the Holy family from the KofC prayer card. Our council distributed approximately 1000 of these prayer cards (or copies of copies) prior to each mass. May 2019 Navigator

The KofC intends for the Novena for Life for the protection of life with a sustained prayer intention of the Church, and in particular of the Knights of Columbus. It’s clear the Knights remain firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being – from the moment of conception to natural death. Our council commemorated and bolstered this important cause with a novena, nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parish, homes and wider community. All in our council were encouraged to signed up for the 9 day Novena for Life from

April 4 to April 12. I happily participated in this event with only a small handful, representing only 5%, of our council brothers. I am hopeful next year the interest in this Novena will grow. I know I got a lot out of this novena.
