Are you a Knight for California Columbian Charities – 365 Club our Lady? When we became Knights we were given a rosary and asked to keep that rosary in our pockets so we had it wherever we go. Okay, now pat your pockets. Is it in there? Let’s take that to the next step whether there or not. How often do you use that rosary? Once a day? a week? a month? a year? Perhaps I’m asking the wrong questions. Maybe instead I should be asking everyone, including myself, do you know Mary? Have you taken the time to really get to know the oneperson God trusted to bring him to this world? January 1st is the SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. It is a holy day of obligation. Why? Because Mary matters. Catholic Answers, one of the most trusted Catholic apologists in the world says in their article, Mary: Mother of God, “A woman is a man’s mother either if she carried him in her womb or if she was the woman contributing half of his genetic matter or both. Mary was the mother of Jesus in both of these senses; because she not only carried Jesus in her womb but also supplied all of the genetic matter for his human body, since it was through her—not Joseph—that Jesus "was descended from David according to the flesh" (Rom. 1:3)1.” Father McGiveny and the generations of Knights since 1882 also knew Mary matters. Let’s finish the last 6 months until the end of our 2018 -19 Columbian year strong in our relationship with Mary and our Lord Jesus Christ. I will be simplifying our pre-meeting meal at 6 so we can quickly nourish our bodies so in turn we could focus on nourishing our souls by saying a rosary before each meeting. Together let us be a Knight for our Lady. Let us be that Knight in the darkness of our culture so we can shine the love for our Lady to community, our family, and our council.
Charity begins at home – BROTHER HELPING BROTHER
In 1955 the State Council created California Columbian Charities, Inc. The charity is dedicated to assisting California Brothers in financial distress, including their widows. For over sixty years our State Council have consistently worked to provide CHARITY, the first principle of our Order and to fulfill Father McGivney’s mandate of BROTHER HELPING BROTHER. During the past six decades the State responded to over 2200 requests for assistance from Brother Knights in California and have given more than $3,200,000 in relief. It is also because of this fund that 20 brothers of Council 7773 received $3000 each only days after tragedy that beset their homes by the Campfire fires.
In the past the State Council asked every Brother in California join the 365 Club and donate a penny a day – either by adding an additional $3.65 (or more) to their dues payment, or by a cash donation at council meetings. After catastrophic fires in 2017 and 2018 this fund has been nearly exhausted. Now, this year, our Chapter and State Council is asking all brother Knight to give an extra $10 when you pay your due to replenish this fund. Please prayerfully consider their request, anything extra you can contribute will be combing with Knights across the state so again, so together we can help those in their hour in need. Happy New Year! -GK Mike 1

Silent Night: The Origin of the Song By RTO.org
The song ‘Silent Night’ is by far the most symbolic of Christmas carols. It is understandable, then, that we might wonder about the origin of such an extraordinary song. To tell the story of its origins we must start at the court of Frederick William of Prussia, the fourth king of that name, just after his ascension to the throne in 1840. It was Christmas Eve. In Berlin, the King and his court were commemorating the birth of Christ. It was Christmas Eve. In Berlin, the King and his court were commemorating the birth of Christ. The Cathedral choir, directed by Felix Mendelsohn, was playing one of the pieces from his repertoire. It was the song ‘Silent Night’. The King was very impressed by the beautiful song and wondered who the author might be. He examined his program with the list of the hymns being sung and was surprised to see that the author was unknown. The King of Prussia could not permit such imprecision. So immediately after the ceremony, he had the director come to see him. However, Mendelsohn was not able to shed any light on the matter. He then called the Head of Royal Concerts, Ludwig, who had the reputation of being able to discover the origin of unknown songs. But to Frederick William’s disappointment he knew nothing either. So the king then ordered Ludwig to find out, because Prussian hymn books had to be in proper order! Now that Ludwig had his reputation on the line, it was imperative that he discover who the composer of the song was. He scoured the libraries, cities, principalities, and kingdoms of what was then Germany. But all to no avail. ‘The Song Hunter’, as they started to call Ludwig, noticed that the style of the music seemed Austrian. So off he went to Vienna. But again drew a blank. However, an old musician from Haydn’s day gave him a clue. Michael Haydn, the brother of the famous musician, composed many works that had been lost. ‘Could this Christmas song perhaps be one of those?’ the old man suggested. It was a long shot, and Ludwig wasn’t encouraged. So giving up his search he decided to return to Court. During the return trip, while he was staying at an inn, he noticed a cage-bird singing a familiar song. He leapt to his feet startled. Ludwig realized the bird was singing that mysterious Christmas song whose author he was looking for; it was singing ‘Silent Night’! “What happened?” the innkeeper asked. “The bird, ” answered Ludwig. “Who taught the bird that song?” The innkeeper did not know. But he added that a friend of his had bought it at the abbey at Salzburg and left it at the inn for the entertainment of guests. The Abbey of Salzburg! Ludwig suddenly felt like a hunter, who after much fruitless searching, finds fresh tracks in the snow. The trail had become warm again! He knew that Michael Haydn had lived for quite a long time at that abbey. So it was almost certain that the song was Michael Haydn’s. Ludwig lost little time changing his travel plans and making his way to the abbey. Upon arrival, the head of royal concerts of the Prussian court was received with all the honors due to his office. The abbot and the monks offered him a good dinner and comfortable lodgings. But, lamentably, nobody knew the origin of the song. They much doubted the author had been Michael Haydn. When the ‘Song Hunter’ told them about the cage-bird, suggesting that the monks had taught it to sing that song, the abbot was offended because such antics were prohibited in the monastery. Ludwig then examined all the manuscripts of Michael Haydn in the room where he had worked. And just as the monks had foretold, he found nothing. The trail was again gone cold. Discour-

aged, Ludwig began his journey back to the Prussian Court. However by chance, among those participating in the dinner offered by the Abbot, there was a school teacher called Ambrosio Prestainer, who was especially interested in the story of the bird. “This could have been done by one of the boys in the abbey choir,” he mused. Now since the school teacher could imitate the bird perfectly, he decided to try out something in order to discover who had taught the bird this song. A few days later he placed himself by a window that opened onto the inner courtyard of the school. He whistled, imitating the bird singing ‘Silent Night’. His ruse worked, because he soon heard a boy’s voice saying: “So little bird, you’re back!” and a nine-year-old boy came running out of class. How surprised the boy was to see he had fallen into a trap! “What is your name?” the teacher asked. “Felix Gruber,” the boy answered. “And tell me Felix, where did you learn that song?” “My father taught it to me.” “And where did he get it?” “He composed it, sir.” Without losing a minute Prestainer went to the boy’s house in a nearby village. There he met the local school teacher, Franz Gruber, who said he had in fact composed the music, but the lyrics had been written by his friend Fr. Josef Mohr, parish priest of the village of Bagran, who had recently died. Overjoyed at finally finding the song’s origin, Prestainer wrote to Ludwig ‘The Song Hunter’, telling him his quest to find the origins of the song were over. He sent Ludwig a full written account of how the song came about. And this is what he told him: It is Christmas Eve, and the tower of the small church of the village dominates the snow-laden houses of the town like a hen protecting its chicks. In the presbytery the young Fr. Josef Mohr, twenty-six years old, is reviewing the Gospel in preparation for that night’s ceremonies when a knock at the door breaks the silence. It is a peasant woman who asks the parish priest to help a baby that has just been born. Without delaying, the priest leaves the comfort of his home and, after a hard climb up the mountain, arrives at the humble abode where the child has been born. Upon his return the stars shine in the heavens reflecting their light on the whiteness of the snow. He begins to reflect on the scene he has just witnessed. The child, the peasant couple, and their humble home, have all impressed him. They remind him of another child, another couple, another humble dwelling in Bethlehem of Judah. After midnight Mass Fr. Mohr is unable to sleep. He takes pen and paper and begins to write a poem that will become the lyrics to the song ‘Silent Night’. The next morning, Christmas Day 1818, the pious priest looks for a friend of his called Franz Gruber, then 31-years-old. After reading the poem, Gruber exclaims: ‘Father, this is exactly the Christmas song that we needed! Praised be to God!’ And that very day he composes the music to go with the words. In this simple and way, mirroring the events at Bethlehem, the most popular and beautiful Christmas song of all time was born. ——————————————————————————
The Little Drummer Boy By RTO.org
Once upon a time there lived, in the faraway deserts of Arabia, a very poor boy. His mother had died when he was still very young, and his father was the guardian of a well where the caravans of travelers stopped to slake their thirst on their way across the desert. Then great crowds of men would arrive with many camels, and everyone was busy getting water from the well.
“Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
This was how the poor man earned his living. But it was not well paid, and so he never had enough money to buy any toys for his little boy. The guardian of the well loved his little son, and he sighed on seeing him without toys. He wanted his boy to be able to entertain himself like any other child. So one day he made him a drum from a sheep’s skin stretched over a small barrel that had lost its bottom. From that day onwards, the little boy was never seen without his drum. During the day, while his father sat next to the well, he played on the drum alone in the tent that was their home. He also played it to greet the caravans that came to the well for water. At night, when the desert was totally silent, the boy made up the songs he would sing the following day as he played his drum. And some of them were quite beautiful! All over the desert the little boy became known as ‘the drummer boy’. One night, a big, mysterious star appeared in the desert sky. The star was much brighter than any other, and it seemed to move in the direction of a nearby village called Bethlehem. Most of those that saw it were frightened by it. But the little drummer boy was not afraid. This star that shone so high in the heavens was too beautiful to be a bad sign. It seemed to announce something good was happening on the earth. So, taking up his drum, he played a song in honor of the star, just as he did when greeting arriving caravans. The star was still shining when a long line of shadows appeared out in the desert night. It was a caravan the likes of which had never been seen before! The animals were adorned with gold and precious stones and walked more majestically than other animals. They were carrying heavy loads, full of marvels. Three kings preceded them. As soon as the cortege stopped in front of the tents and the animals had finished drinking, the kings explained to the people, who pressed around them, that they had been travelling for many days. They had seen the star in their far away lands and had understood—because they were Magi—that it shone in order to guide them to the stable where the Child Jesus had been born. The small boy was not a wise man like the Magi. He did not know that this Child Jesus was the Messiah announced by the prophets, but he listened very attentively to everything being said. He was moved by the idea that this Child Jesus was so poor that they had to lay Him in a manger where the ox and ass eat. Fortunately, the Kings were taking Him gold, incense, and myrrh as presents. The little drummer boy wanted to go to see this Child Jesus himself. He wanted to take Him something. But…he was poor and had nothing to offer. Suddenly, the little boy remembered his drum. Why not go and play for the Child in the manger? Why not go and offer Him, in the name of all poor boys, the most beautiful of his songs? The little boy left with the Kings to Bethlehem. As soon as they arrived at the stable, he started to sing to the Child, Who smiled as He lay in between the ox and the ass. And then, oh marvel, the angels started singing along with him! Is your Faith in Action? Happy New Year! I hope your Advent and Christmas seasons were filled with joy, creating lasting, wonderful memories with family and friends. Now, as we begin 2019, many of us will contemplate new years resolutions. Will it be to lose a few pounds or exercise more? How about increasing your Faith in Action? It’s never easy or pleasant to examine our shortcomings, to change our habits, with the goal of making us better versions of ourselves. As Christians, we are called to practice our faith, and as Knights, we are reminded that the basic principle of our order is charity, the voluntary giving of help to those in need. The beauty of the Knights of Columbus is that we make it easy for you to do charitable works through any of the programs we organize. Just like instant meals that say “just
add water,” the key ingredient for all the Faith in Action programs is “just add Knights!” As I’ve stated before, this is a major transition year for the Knights. After 50 years of “Surge with Service,” we need to embrace “Faith in Action.” What programs will you be a part of this year? Whether you help organize an event or are a participant at the event, your voluntary giving of your time and energy will strengthen our Order and our Church. One new program that is required this year for your Council to be eligible for the Columbian Award is the Consecration to the Holy Family. This progr am is calling you to be a leader in our faith community and especially to be a leader in faith at home with your family. This program is more than just reciting a prayer to the Holy Family, it takes preparation.
Page 12
This program is outlined on www.KofC.org. Here is a summary of the guidelines: First, you should understand what it means to “consecrate,” or associate yourself to the Holy Family. Our salvation history was changed by the Holy Family and we are called to surrender ourselves to God and live by their example. The second step in preparation for this consecration is to cleanse our body, mind, and soul by receiving the sacrament of reconciliation. We are so fortunate that we have a loving and forgiving God who has given us this sacrament. You should remind each family member to take advantage of this sacrament during this time of preparation. Third, encourage each family member to fast from something for at least a week prior to the consecration. Fasting helps to discipline our minds and hearts and moves us to be
more focused on God. Finally, understand that this is not a one-time event. You and your family are consciously choosing to be a beacon of light of God’s love through his Church. Nothing in this program is new to what we are called to be as Catholics. This program just helps us formalize the process, giving it meaning. This program can be done anytime throughout the year. The preparation will take about 4 weeks, from announcements to the day of Consecration to the Holy Family. Consider planning this during Lent. Are you ready to put your Faith in Action? Vivat Jesus! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE
Recently I lost a dear friend of mine. He had a small life policy with another company under $100k in value. A small retirement fund that he was putting money into. My friend a lifelong Catholic, a Brother Knight passed away at the age of 58. Most of us would consider this too early for our Lord to call someone home but unfortunately we have no control over his plan for any of us. A lot of the Brother Knights I visit feel they are set. This week I had an appointment with a Brother Knight who knew about our appointment but wasn't there. He left the entire meeting up to his wife because he had to plan out some cooking event! My time is valuable is so is yours. I set time aside from my work and family to help families plan so they do not end up in the same predicament as my friend did. The Brother finally showed up as his wife and I concluded our meeting. She had told me that he took the 50% pension option at his job. I asked her what she was planning on doing when her income drops off by 50% when he passes. There was the deer in the headlights look. He remained silent. I informed them that there are two options, one is life insurance to create a pension to replace the one from his job and the other is a settlement option on his retirement funds which will provide guaranteed income with no market risk. Keep in mind that we take on market risk when we are trying to grow our money prior to retirement. Once we are in retirement mode we want guaranteed payouts and limited or no risk as we will need those funds to get us through retirement in case the good lord doesn't call us home early. In closing my friend has four kids, two adults and two minors. His wife will reach the "blackout period" with social security survivor benefits on three of the four kids. She will receive no survivor benefits until she is 60(7 years) and only benefits on one of the four kids. How do you prevent this from occurring with your family? You take 30 minutes out of your valuable time to sit down with me and learn how the Knights will protect you in a Catholic way, a way our founder would be proud of. And not leave your family destitute.

Membership My Brother Knights,
FIRST LET ME WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY AND HEALTHY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR! I hope you all enjoyed Christmas and that the great Santa in the sky brought you all that you wished for. NOW my wish for the New Year is that we recruit at least a dozen men ready to enjoy fellowship with their Brother Knights and become closer to Christ. Our Columbian year is half over. We are at a critical time in the year. We need new Knights to share the personal and family benefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus. Since our last meeting how many of you invited a friend, family member or acquaintance to join and share the benefits of Knighthood with you? Helping our council grow helps each one of us to grow in our relationship with each other and with God. The tried and true saying is: "How do you get someone to join the Knights of Columbus?" Answer: You ask them!" I spoke to a number of men at the Parish Christmas event and found men who are interested. Hopefully you will be able to meet them at our January meeting. Bring someone you know who may be interested. They will be our guest at the dinner before the meeting and meet your brother Knights. The dinner is free for guests who are considering becoming a Knight. Hope to see you all there. January 5-6, 2019 is the weekend of our first membership drive for the New Year. Let's make it a great success. Your help is needed for about 5-10 minutes after the Mass you attend to hand out recruitment material to interested men. Please let me know which Mass you are attending and see me or WGK Mike Ochoa for materials after Mass. Thank you. PGK Frank Abi-Nader Membership Co-Director. Frank Abi-Nader
