S tate m e nt Spiel mit dem Feuer (Playing with Fire)

Spiel mit dem Feuer

Spiel mit dem Feuer -Play with Fire-

The exhibition Spiel mit dem Feuer (Play with Fire) presents a new series of works by Christoph RUCKHÄBERLE. RUCKHÄBERLE is the most conspicuous outsider of the new Leipzig school, which has a reputation for melancholy. In his early works, the paintings appear rather gloomy with patterned walls, floor carpet, window and door that carved out the spatial dimensions for his characters to live. The characters seem wooden, frozen in time and midmovement, isolated and bored like dolls in a puppet show. Nevertheless, RUCKHÄBERLE managed to put this characteristic behind him and exploits the graphic potential of relief mediums by creating strong, clashing patterns, such as the stripes of the subject's dress, hair, and socks and the diamond motif on the floor. His painting has brought a new horizon to contemporary German art. In his recent approach, RUCKHÄBERLE flattens the figures. They become more like cartoon characters and sometimes even just oddly twisted limbs and body parts combining and overlapping on the surface of the canvas. A transition of the idea of space is found in his playful compositions. Starting from the technique of perspective drawing in his painting; to the trials of using exhibition walls as an extension of his creation; and his most recent approach of incorporating space with figures, patterns, colour blocks and creating chaotic imagery that looks like a top view of a five-dimensional world. Like a magician with paints and colours, Christoph RUCKHÄBERLE plays with the concept of space and manipulates our senses with curious tricks in perspectives. Spiel mit dem Feuer presents the boldness of our deepest desire- to outlive the present. Suggesting a new way to interact with the known and unknown, opening up endless possibilities to experiencing artistic creation.
