寻找金钱、品位与时间的平衡点 每个人都有自己的生活方式,或好或坏。一个人没有品 位比没钱更可怕。想象一下,当你在米兰四季酒店或者巴黎 雅典娜广场酒店享受“食不言”早餐时,突然被一群言行粗 俗的所谓“新贵游客”打断,是不是有种煮鹤焚琴的感觉? LifeStyle 倡导有品调的生活。“生活方式”的概念本身 暗里指责那些只管赚钱不懂花钱的人,不过对于大部分有钱 人来说,他们恐怕是没有时间兼顾。很多人认为自己的好品 位是与生俱来的,事实上,好品位得花时间学习,或者你父 母很有品位也行。 这些观点似乎不够简单明了,我将其总结为“MTT 生活 方式”:M 代表金钱(money)、第一个 T 代表品位(taste)、 第二个 T 代表时间 (time) , 而这三者之间一定存在一个平衡点, 能使各方值共同达到最大化。 不妨给你认识的人都打打分。网游成瘾者的时间值很高, 可惜财富和品位值就没那么高了;温州的新兴富商可能财富 值很高,但架不住其他值比较低,他们就是 LifeStyle 这类杂 志要“帮助”的群体;精明的香港高管们有钱有品位,但没 有时间,其生活方式就只剩下工作二字了。 在亚洲,激烈的竞争、持续的高压、拥挤的人潮,还有 上涨的物价,这些都使人们为金钱奔劳。手头钱不多,又要 拥有高品调和充裕的时间,着实很难,除非是天生富贵命。 但在西方,不够富裕但有时间、有品位的人很常见。撇开文 化价值观不说,更好的自然环境和历史传统也是原因之一, 也许更多好玩的东西是不需要花钱的吧。中国的富人们也正 在跟进,因此出现了所谓的“生活方式移民”。在中国,你 完全可以想象为了逃避生活的乏味和父母持续施予的压力, 或许有些人会更多地关注文化和艺术,他们钱不多,但拥有 良好的生活方式。 对于那些时间总是不够用的富豪权贵来说,五星级酒店 可能是一个不错的选择——讲究高效率的同时,满足了高品 位生活的方方面面。这么看来,似乎只有住在酒店或是紧邻 酒店的公寓,MTT 平衡值才能最大化。

Everyone has a lifestyle. Some are better. Some are worse. A lifestyle without taste can be more laughable than one without money. Think of enjoying a tranquil breakfast at the Four Seasons Milano or Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Paris, only to be interrupted by a vulgar horde of wealthy tourists from the developing world. They are caught at the luxury stage. The title of this publication in Chinese, pinwei shenghuo, translates loosely to “tasteful living”. Preeminence of pinwei, taste, came after shehua, luxury. The notion of lifestyle implicitly rebukes those who prioritize profit and heedless spending on luxury, but for most with money, the roadblock for lifestyle is time. Though many believe their own good taste to be innate, it usually took time and study to develop or parents with taste. But these notions are not so simple or static. I propose the MTT lifestyle chart in which M is for money, the first T for taste and the second T is for time. There must be some ideal point at which all three can be maximized for a balanced lifestyle. Go ahead and give the people you know scores. Imagine the computer gaming addict with a very high time rating, and low ratings in money and taste. The new-moneyed Wenzhou merchant might have a very high money score and low everything else. He is the one magazines like this are supposed to help. Think of a hard-nosed Hong Kong executive with ample funds, total confidence in her taste, but so little time that her lifestyle is really just work. In Asia, the backdrop is intense competition, pressure, crowding, rising prices…which make maximizing money at the expense of time an understandable choice. The idea of a high ranking in taste and time with a low one in money is hard. Only people born to money are allowed to have taste and time in China, but in the West, people without much money but with time and taste are more common. Beyond cultural values, this also relates to a better preserved natural and historic environment. Perhaps more fun things are free. Wealthy Chinese are catching on too - hence “lifestyle immigrants” to the West. In China, one can imagine a person more focused on culture and art that - were they to avoid the tedious, incessant pressures from family to conform - could have a good lifestyle with little money. For wealthy power brokers with little time, East and West, five-star hotels may be the cure. They concentrate all aspects of a tasteful lifestyle in one place, enhancing efficiency. In collaboration with his wife, Jeanne Boulet, he developed what would become the “Noël style.” This seasonal Summer collection is inspired by wildlife and summery colors. Made out of high-quality materials such as Egyptian cotton, linen and cashmere, the range encompasses designs such as Giraffes and the Indian city of Jaipur.

The basis for the Round Square Cabinet range was “the fascinating effect of a floating bubble which adapts to its surroundings until it snaps,” explained designers Iris Van Daalen and Ruben Thier. “We had the dream to capture these temporary beauties in a tendril frame.” To recreate this idea, the studio teamed up with Dutch glass blower Marc Barreda.

While the Cesium 133 is still in prototype stages, the makers are selling the first 10 pieces via Kickstarter as a way to get the watch into production. It pushes accuracy to a whole new level, keeping time to one second in 1,000 years. The watch contains a tiny atomic clock housed in a microchip. Inside the watch is a Ronda 509 quartz movement that has been fitted with a CSAC (Chip Sized Atomic Clock) to act as the regulator. It runs up to 36 hours on a rechargeable battery.

Leave it to fashion’s leading intellectual, Mrs. Prada, armed with her Ph.D. in political science, to choose Mexican political mural art as inspiration for a runway collection. For the SS14, called ‘In The Heart of Multitude’, she commissioned muralists El Mac, Mesa, Gabriel Specter, Stinkfish, and illustrators Jeanne Detallante and Pierre Mornet to create artwork for prints in the collection and also for the giant murals in the catwalk space on Milan’s Via Fogazzaro. Leftism met luxury in pop-art in a collection that featured the faces of women on coats and dresses, furs and a witty excess of embellishments with Swarovski crystals and cubic zirconia. Inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo’s partner, Diego Rivera, the collection seems rooted in Latin revolution but perfectly matched to the tastes of Asia’s glittering new elites. www.prada.com

Their rays shine across solid gold cases crafted using a technique called Rigato, in which perfectly straight lines lend a silk-like texture to the material. These two one-of-a-kind masterworks from Italian jeweler Buccellati just stole the show at Baselworld 2014 and will be available at 150,000 Euro for the iPhone case and 350,000 Euro for the iPad cover, making them the priciest products of their kind in the world. Casino Royale: A First Vesper “三份哥顿金酒、一份伏特加、半份半干开胃酒,加冰块, 摇匀,不要搅拌,再加一片柠檬皮。”詹姆斯·邦德在小说《皇 家赌场》第七章中向侍者点了这款经典鸡尾酒,从此世人皆 知“维斯帕”的时髦喝法。这是英国小说家伊恩·弗莱明旅居 牙买加期间创作的第一部邦德小说,于 1953 年 4 月 13 日首 次出版,已被三度改编搬上大银幕,其中最有名的要数 2006 年丹尼尔·克雷格主演的版本——第 21 部 007 电影《007 大 战皇家赌场》。在今年四月伦敦 Dreweatts & Bloomsbury 现 代文学作品拍卖会上,由作者亲自设计封面的初版《皇家赌场》 最终以 24180 英镑落槌。 “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel,” said Agent ’07 in chapter seven of Ian Fleming’s “Casino Royale”, the first Bond novel, published on April 13, 1953. And thus, audiences worldwide learned how to make Bond’s classic pre-dinner cocktail, the Vesper. A first edition of “Casino Royale” just fetched £24,180 ($40,612) at the Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions’ sale of Modern Literature in London in April. The dust jacket was designed by Fleming himself and who wrote the novel while living in Jamaica. Adapted three times to film, the most recent and famous was the 2006 version staring Daniel Craig.

hielded from the grimy clutter of the city centre by Royal Palace Park, Oslo’s Majorstuen neighborhood features a trendy retail area that rivals the shopping streets of larger European metropolises in terms of grandeur and style. Boutique bars with microbrewer beers and craft cocktails rub elbows with vibrant Scandinavian design outlets such as Hay and Acne. Stores and cafes bubbling with bold, youthful verve apparently please even the more conservative passers-by, who find both old and new in an eye-catching hair salon that recently splashed onto this attractive inner-city canvas. The Inch Hairstudio, whose interior is the work of INNE DESIGN ushers visitors into a relaxing space that gives classic design a contemporary, avant-garde edge. Floors of bare concrete mingle with marble-topped counters and buttontufted seating in an environment that doesn’t shy away from explosions of primary colour used to good effect. If, as the designers assure, their aim was “to create an urban feeling that is vitalizing and new”, they have achieved what they set out to do. Mix a pinch of Brooklyn barber’s pole with a dash of spa chic, stir well, and you get Inch.” A wall of bright corn field yellow punctuates the otherwise muted color palate. This is further accented by pieces of brightly colored furniture and antique light fixtures. Founded by Vigdis Apeland Bergh, Interior architect AND furniture designer, INNE DESIGN was started in 2000. The studio is engaged in a diverse range of projects, including interior conceptual design. The design company has received a number of prestigious awards both in Norway and international, including Best Interior Awards, Norway, in 2008, 2011 and 2013.

ecipient of the 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize, Shigeru Ban, a Tokyo-born, 56-year-old architect with offices in Tokyo, Paris and New York. He designs elegant, innovative work for private clients, and uses the same inventive and resourceful design approach for his extensive humanitarian efforts. For twenty years Ban has traveled to sites of natural and man-made disasters around the world, to work with local citizens, volunteers and students, to design and construct simple, dignified, low-cost, recyclable shelters and community buildings for the disaster victims. Reached at his Paris office, Shigeru Ban said, “Receiving this prize is a great honor, and with it, I must be careful. I must continue to listen to the people I work for, in my private residential commissions and in my disaster relief work. I see this prize as encouragement for me to keep doing what I am doing – not to change what I am doing, but to grow.” In all parts of his practice, Ban finds a wide variety of design solutions, often based around structure, materials, view, natural ventilation and light, and a drive to make comfortable places for the people who use them. From private residences and corporate headquarters, to museums, concert halls

and other civic buildings, Ban is known for the originality, economy, and ingeniousness of his works, which do not rely on today’s common high-tech solutions. For the Centre Pompidou-Metz, in France, Ban designed an airy, undulating latticework of wooden strips to form the roof, which covers the complex museum program underneath and creates an open and accessible public plaza. To construct his disaster relief shelters, Ban often employs recyclable cardboard paper tubes for columns, walls and beams, as they are locally available; inexpensive; easy to transport, mount and dismantle; and they can be water- and fire-proofed, and recycled. He says that his Japanese upbringing helps account for his wish to waste no materials. As a boy, Shigeru Ban observed traditional Japanese carpenters working at his parents’ house and to him their tools, the construction, and the smells of wood were magic. He would save cast aside pieces of wood and build small models with them. He

wanted to become a carpenter. But at age eleven, his teacher asked the class to design a simple house and Ban’s was displayed in the school as the best. Since then, to be an architect was his dream. Ban’s humanitarian work began in response to the 1994 conflict in Rwanda, which threw millions of people into tragic living conditions. Ban proposed papertube shelters to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and they hired him as a consultant. After the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan, he again donated his time and talent. There, Ban developed the “Paper Log House,” for Vietnamese refugees in the area, with donated beer crates filled with sandbags for the foundation, he lined up the paper cardboard tubes vertically, to create the walls of the houses. Ban also designed “Paper Church,” as a community center of paper tubes for the victims of Kobe. It was later disassembled and sent to Taiwan, and reconstructed there, in 2008.

tÊphanie Coutas is first and foremost a devotee to craftsmanship and savoirfaire, who also designs plush, elegant and warm spaces. She subtly fuses her love of beautiful workmanship and romanticism to create neoclassical and contemporary interiors imbued with modern magic. She was brought up in Asia and spent most of her childhood abroad in stylish locations which sparked her passion for beautiful homes and interiors. She began her professional life in fashion before opening her interior design agency, 1001maisons, in 2005 where she worked with a team of architects, decorators and designers on private homes, hotels and yachts in France and abroad. All her designs feature clean lines combined with spectacular decor, nude tones with precious wood, velvet, Murano glass and shagreen. This stylish apartment was designed by her and fuses the eclectic tastes of modern and antique in a coherent whole. Her appreciation of beautiful workmanship and romanticism combined with the traditional Neoclassical interior has created a contemporary statement. The apartment was designed to act as a family home and features vibrant artworks. It features works by Robert Combas, Laurence Bonnel, Laurence Jenkeel and Michel Rico. Design is also one of her passions and at last year’s Designer’s Days, she presented the Salamander Chair, made in collaboration with furniture maker Henryot & Cie. With its neoclassical shape, padded white leather seat adorned with a pair of wire salamanders, the chair embodies the haute couture furniture that the designer has always loved. She was recently commissioned to design several suites for the Nouveau Paquebot France including a spectacular 70 square meter suite with a 360 degree rotating bed in front of a bay window. The other pearl and ebony inlay on the main door, dressing table in Murano glass, alabaster wall, silk rug and leather ceiling add the finishing touches to the luxurious look.

Located along the Huangpu River in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, the integrated development is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Lan Kwai Fong Group, DreamWorks Animation and CMC Capital Partners. Key features include the “Dream Avenue” Cultural Theatre District; Headquarters of Oriental DreamWorks which will become Asia’s top animation production base; Asia’s most iconic 500-seat IMAX Cineplex; and the exciting Lan Kwai Fong Entertainment and Lifestyle District. Eight themed outdoor plazas will work to interconnect these core hubs within the development. The DreamCenter project, a catalyst for change in Shanghai, a development that will culturally elevate its urban setting, will be completed for opening in 2017. It is hoped the iconic, 24’ x 24’ vacation cottage will be opened to the public by 2015, after which it will be disassembled and transported to select museums around the country. One of the more whimsical components of the cottage are the series of ropes and pulleys, counterbalanced by large red concrete balls, that control the external window shades. These shades ensure flexibility by providing the dwelling with security, permeability and shelter from the sun.

On the streets of Beijing and China, young people have more freedom to adopt new shapes. Rules of dressing from which Westerners find escape to be difficult are more easily adopted here. Young designers in China also find themselves inclined toward more cavernous shapes and other fun plays with shape.

Nehru and mandarin collars and other alternatives never pose a serious challenge and tend to get trotted out only on prom night. With China ascendent like no other non-Western culture in modern history, there seems more hope that the iron grip of Western business attire could be loosened. The debut collection of Atelier Rouge, called Cultural Evolution, hints at such a revolution, though the cocreator, Chinese designer PJ says her intent is less to disrupt that to provide a viable alternative to satisfy those who want something different. The fashion pieces from the collection are less about introducing totally new shapes than making existing ones like the Mao or Zhongshan jacket appealing and more luxuriant with quality construction, Mongolian cashmere, and a modern cut granddad’s heavily padded, poly-blend version. These do seem like Chinese style garments that might someday work in the boardroom. On the more fashion-forward and womenswear fronts, plays with shape are more daring and diversified. Young stylish Chinese are certainly becoming more adventurous with shape and silhouette. Not being constrained by decades of sartorial conventions like Westerners is freeing, and you do see a new discovery and reinterpretation of conventions and earlier periods. Which designers influencing the rise and redefining of Chinese shapes? Beijing-based Su Guangyu brings a modern perspective to his fusing of traditional Chinese clothing elements. His androgynous, voluminous shapes for spring/ summer 2014 incorporate sportswear elements and create a fresh, pared-down vision. NYC-based Taiwanese Peggy Tan is behind Mandarin & General, which uses the heritage of Mandarin-dress making and reinvents this constructional tradition to create a very modern aesthetic. Londonbased brand Nova Chiu focuses on textiles, print and color and embodies elements of minority cultures from China and beyond. Vibrant, eclectic and distinctive, Nova Chiu doesn’t shy away from unusual shapes and silhouettes.


Will this impact the West? The Internet has enabled us to see what people are wearing throughout the world. Chinese designers have a considerable presence now in Europe, regularly showing at the fashion weeks, and championing the cause through unique, very distinctive shapes. In men’s clothing in particular, do you see modernized takes on traditional attire going mainstream? Certainly. You only need to walk through buzzing areas of town to see young males dressed in dandyish attire that wouldn’t be out of place on a London street. Xander Zhou has an almost retro-future vision, taking sportswear and tailoring elements and deconstructing them completely. It’s always unconventional, and turns traditional tropes completely on their heads.

Whereas fashion inevitably references its past, oddly dedicated to change but traditionalist, the auto industry always moves forward with shapes that seem to become ever more sleek and aerodynamic. The car industry has made immense strides in combining fun shapes with practicality over the last decade with results like the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes Benz CLS, Audi A7, Porsche Panamera and even the Tesla Model S, which is clearly a breakthrough in many other ways as well. One longer must drive a two door, only barely comfortable coupe to get sportiest, most attractive design. Four door coupes mean buying that midlife crisis car doesn’t mean trading in the wife and kids for a trophy girlfriend. These cars have very modern shapes. Those seeking something a bit more classic are still at a loss when it comes to automobiles. Unlike slim ties and lapels or flapper dresses, tail fins show little sign of coming back. Hooked on technology, car companies invoke the past only in advertising campaigns referencing their own company histories, but the connection often falls flat when the sleek contemporary version of the car is unveiled. There have been many attempts at retro in the field of automobiles over the years, often from US auto makers who seek to kindle nostalgia in aging baby boomers. The VW beetles and Chrysler PT Cruiser are still hopelessly modern in shape and somehow not stylish like those famously unreliable British cars of the 1960s. Even Lamborghinis - now reserved for teenage sons of corrupt officials, sheiks, and Russian pimps - used to be tasteful in the 1970s and the Rolls Royce had not taken on its current arrogant look that seems to yell “bloated Third-World plutocrat”. Something had to be done. Englishman David Brown is addressing the problem of tastelessly shaped vehicles with his Speedback GT, unveiled in April at the Top Marques show in Monaco. “I wanted all the impact and style of a classic sports car, but with modern capabilities and conveniences. This is what I want in a car, but it’s not something anyone really offers. So, I’ve created it myself.” Performance is as good as any modern luxury vehicle with a Jaguar XKR-based chassis and supercharged 5.0-litre V8that takes the Speedback from 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and reaches top speeds of 248 km/h. The vehicle looks beautifully classic but has the insides of a first-class contemporary luxury car. Handcrafted to order in the UK and selling for £495,000, excluding taxes, the Speedback will meet the needs of global elites and auto enthusiasts with a true sense of style. A more practical vehicle should take some cues from David Brown Automotive in creating more mainstream luxury vehicles. Needed today is a vehicle that blends acknowledges we are in a retro age and blends the shape of 1960s Jaguars and Aston Martins, the current notion of the four-dour coupe and the high-tech and clean-tech of a Tesla. The shape of car interiors today is all about lots of screens, though how these avoid distracting the driver is not quite clear. This futuristic interior should be found in a mass-oriented retro vehicle. Think of what Don Draper would be driving today.

There are weird shapes all around us. Just look up. Anyone who thinks modern architecture is boring or is only the heir to Mies van der Rohe need only look at such structures, planned and realized, as the Dancing House in Prague the coin-shaped building in Abu Dhabi, an apartment tower complex that looks like a hashtag, the Elephant Building in Bangkok, and China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts and CCTV tower, to mention just a few buildings around us. In addition there are the controversial and notorious such as the “Gherkin” in London or the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. Zaha Hadid has been doing organic undulating forms for many years now but her high-profile projects around the world. She has been preoccupied with changing our notions of space, not necessarily physically but also socially and culturally. Her projects are characterized by their dynamic formal qualities of sinuous curving shapes or a kind of crystallization. There is a sense of the Baroque about them, a far cry from the formal Modernism or heroic Brutalism that were her stylistic predecessors.

I don’t think there are genuinely new shapes and forms in architecture. I think over the last ten years we became able to handle complex free form geometries on a larger scale faster and on more reasonable budgets than in previous decades. Galaxy Soho in Beijing is a prefect example for that.

We’re in an age where nostalgia and conscious references to historic movements plays a rather large part. What does that say about the future of design? Are we really in that era? Mies van der Rohe came straight out of neoclassicism and developed his thoughts from there for example. There has always been a continuity. I think today there are and will be original design contributions that will stand for themselves and represent our age. I don’t want to speculate which those are because it’s better to let history make that choice. A lot of shape is informed by technology. Where does that leave pure geometric forms and such like the golden mean, etc.? I think they are alive and well and they will never go away because these proportional rules have a lot to do with the proportions of the human body. There will always be architects that base their entire work on these principles. But even with designs that let’s say do the grand free form gesture you will find these rules applied in façade subdivisions and other individual components that affect how humans interact with it.

Within this decade, there have been many emblematic products and designers introduced. Names like Philippe Starck and Maarten Baas have become household names for the design-conscious and design duos such as Studio Job are sort of celebrities in the always intermingling world of fashion and design. Surrealism is often a recurring theme, usually because of how mundane historic objects are transformed or transfigured into rather new departures from form and function. The effect can be sinister or whimsical or even both. Studio Job the Dutch design duo onsisting of Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel - are known for their stockpile of functionless design objects. Many of the items are oversized and have a sensual Byzantine-like goldenness. Drawing from influences such as Bavarian marquetry and 17th century Dutch earthenware, the works are beautifully

crafted often in collaboration with historic firms such as France’s Cristal St. Louis. One of their designs has been the Wonderlamp described as: “The pieces you see here, the 7 lamps, are everyday life pieces. The pots and pans your mother has in the kitchen, a torch, and a neon lamp. They aren’t really historical. This year we did some really joyful pieces, without a dark, heavy meaning.” There is also of course Philippe Starck for Baccarat: the iconic French designer who has done everything from interiors to chairs to chandeliers is also well-known for his longstanding collaboration with Baccarat. Many of the pieces are intentionally misshapen or slightly askew. With the traditional shapes of the storied French firm like the Harcourt glass, Starck redefines their form and intentions to create what he calls a “sparkling, surreal cocktail”. Somewhat different from Studio Job, Starck states that he does not create “useless” objects: “Function is obligation because I am not an artiste. I don’t make a painting. I don’t make a sculpture. I make chairs, lamps, cars, planes, mega yachts - there is a function. How I make this function - there (are many different ways) to skin a cat.”

Finally Maarten Baas who has done a collaboration with Champagne Ruinart, the oldest champagne house in existence. As an unconventional shifting designer, the Dutchman Maarten Baas upholds his countryman’s propensity for clever nods. His most famous works have been the Smoke Series in which he took numerous pieces of classical furniture and burned, charred and finished them in order to reinvent them as new forms. This is also evident in his 2009 Ruinart collaboration. This tendency of transformation of original form led to melting champagne flutes and ice buckets that look like as if they were about to topple over.

What types of new forms and shapes have you been noticing in design recently? There’s been a resurgence in the abstracted and geometric forms akin to those used by the Memphis group in the 1980s – so simple base shapes, perpendicular surfaces and angled elements all used in combination.

Nao Tamura

We’re in an age where nostalgia and conscious references to historic movements plays a rather large part. What does that say about the future of design? A rolling pattern seems to have emerged where eras are revived around 25 years after they first happened. So design – particularly furniture and fashion – from the early 1980s is currently experiencing a comeback, whereas five years before now there was a 1970s influence. This suggests that we’re due a 1990s revival fairly soon. Fashion tends to precede furniture design in this sense, so we can look to the catwalks to see what color, pattern and material trends might crop up in furniture pieces a year or two later. Looking further forward, I think technology and the evergrowing need for newer and shinier gadgets will surpass the current wave of nostalgia. Products and furniture will be more about interfaces rather than materials, and functionality and connectivity will be ranked more important than appearance. A lot of shape is informed by technology. Do you see that in traditional categories like furniture and glass? Yes, particularly in the marble furniture pieces shown during Milan design week this year. The machinery used to carve and sculpt the stone has improved dramatically, so many designers are experimenting with this to create forms not previously achievable with the material. Glassware is a little different, as recently there has been a return to traditional techniques as opposed to using new methods. Designers are adapting glassblowing skills to create new patterns and shapes, or reforming existing glass products into new pieces (see German designer Laura Jungmann). Any new designers to watch out for? Nao Tamura, who created a beautiful range of glass lighting for Wonderglass and an ethereal installation called Interconnection.

Blink, played by Fan Bingbing, is a mutant with the gift of teleportation. Apart from being able to teleport herself, she can displace groups of people, as well as portions of objects or people, and is also capable of creating portals in the air, which makes her one of the key figures in this film. With violet hair, green eyes, and distinct marks on her face, Blink instantly leaves an impression on viewers. Starting with the little servant girl in the TV serial Princess Pearl, she founded her own studio in 2007. After a hundred million broken, one of her films is a major hit in mainland China’s movie box-office records in 2012. Last year, Fan Bingbing topped Forbes China Celebrity 100 List. Now Hollywood is on her radar.

Are you trying hard to get rid of the label ‘Eye Candy’? Actually, many actresses start with being Eye Candy, a stage in a career. I don’t think it‘s some kind of burden, you know, only time will tell and all I need to do is be a better me every time. I know what I am doing and I got tired of figuring out what others think of me. You are always trying many kinds of fashion styles. Where do the ideas come from, you or the stylists? I guess the answer is both. I like to ‘design’ myself. The “Dragon Robe” I wore on the red carpet of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, for instance, was created by Christopher Bu and me. Moreover, I gave many opinions on the design for attending the Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week.

What does the role Blink mean to you? I am a big fan of the X-Men film series. While to watch them is one thing, it is quite another to be a part of them. It’s exciting and fun to join the director and actors you admire. I like Blink very much and X-Men: Days of Future Past is her debut on the big screen and I wish everyone could see her through my eyes. Of course, it will be great if Blink could always stay in the X-Men film series. By the way, her unique power of teleporting is very cool!

What do you think is the biggest difference about you from others? I am my real self. People who know me say I am prettier and more flamboyant in real life and that’s the kind of person I am.

What are some of the differences between filming in China and Hollywood? Many people are affected by the inertial thinking that a Chinese actor is only invited to pass by in a Hollywood film if it’s not a starring role. In my opinion, it’s not always about screen time, it’s about being remembered. Hollywood is very professional and when a Chinese actor is needed, it’s pivotal.

If forced to label yourself, which would you choose: girl, woman, man or queen? I guess I have all of them, right in my heart. I don’t mean to be sophisticated which is for my work and it doesn’t mean I am tough for 24 hours. Deep in my heart, I save a precious space for my dreams and longings, as every girl does. I have many dolls in my home and they share most of my little secrets.

Are you tired of the life in the spotlight and being the focus of gossip? Being the center of attention is very normal for actors so it’s your attitude that really matters. If I cared, I would rather quit and just be a housewife.

当初拿到第一个奖时是什么感受?之后的 哪个奖项最令你难忘? 其实每一个奖项对我都非常重要,我 觉得那是对我的一种肯定!记得拿第一个奖 时,非常激动,手里握的不单单是一个奖杯, 更多的是一份荣誉和大家对我的认可,我也 更加坚定了自己走歌唱道路的信念与决心。 最令我难忘的应该是全国人大常委会副委员 长陈昌智为我颁发“2013 年中国绿色公益 大使”荣誉聘书,因为社会赋予了我一个强 大的使命,我必须把它做好。

美食对你而言意味着什么?你是四川人, 推荐一些你小时候经常吃,但是现在很少 见到的四川美食吧? 是生活品质的象征。琢磨美食,亲自下 厨,是我的爱好之一。平常最擅长的是川菜 和粤式煲汤。我喜欢去各地搜寻美食,研究 有浓郁地方特色的菜肴。小时候最喜欢吃奶 奶亲手做的水汆猪肉丸子和乡村石磨豆花、 豆腐,不过现在很难吃到正宗的了。

如何看待现在的音乐市场?你对自己的定 位是怎样的? 现在从事音乐行业的人太多了,希望大 家多出精品力作。我自己的音乐跨度比较大, 以后的音乐方向会更加偏流行。我的声音特 点在于音域跨度大,声音情感丰富。流行音 乐曲风,包括古典与现代风格结合的音乐, 我都会去尝试。 你参演过多部电视剧,是否会考虑向影视 方面发展? 在表演方面,我只给自己打 80 分,希 望以后能有更多的机会学习表演技巧。我是 一个把歌唱视为生命的人,虽然出演了多部 电视剧,但从来不会放松对自己歌唱的要求。 就目前而言,我把更多的精力还是放在音乐 上,为听众呈献更多更好的作品。当然,如 有机会拍戏,我会再尝试的。

ow would you describe your long career and life in the arts? It started when by chance, I entered a singing competition and happened to do well in the end. This started me down the road to show business. I have created a lot of original songs and sung in many special galas of CCTV and other TV stations. My performances have been generally accepted and well-received by the audience. I think persistence was the key ingredient in making my dream come true. People complain. People nag. But the only thing that will bring people great success is the spirit of persistence. How did you feel at the moment you won your first award? Which of your award experiences was the most memorable? For me, each award is irreplaceable. They represent honor and recognition, which is extremely important to me. I can still recall the memory of winning my first trophy: I was so excited. Perhaps the most unforgettable one was the “Green Charity Ambassador of China 2013” presented by vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Chen Changzhi – it’s not only a title but a mission. How do you view the music industry in China? Where do you position yourself within it? There are now so many talented musicians in this field. My own music spans a couple of genres, but my future albums will probably lean towards pop. My voice has quite a wide range and is emotional, so I’m able to try out various genres, especially pop in classic or modern style. You’ve appeared in many TV shows, have you ever considered becoming a professional actor? I’d give myself a reasonable score of 80/100 for my acting. I definitely hope that there will be more chances to take part in TV shows and to learn more about acting. But singing is still my life purpose, and I will never lower the bar for my professional career. As for now, I will put more of my energy into music.

As a voice teacher, could you tell us about one of your most fun moments? When I was a young student, I got a lot of positive influence from my teachers. Professionally, they taught me everything they knew without reservation. They are my role models. Now I treat my students in the same way. They are my friends and they are often invited to my performances, which may be a great help to them when they become “real” artists after graduation. What does gourmet food mean to you? As a Sichuan native, can you recommend a local dish that you love? Loving gourmet food is a symbol of living a quality life. I prefer cooking by myself – Sichuan cuisine and Cantonese soup are my specialties. I like to travel and try different flavors. Quick-boiled meatballs and homemade Tofu made by my grandma were my favorites when I was a child, but I can rarely find any authentic ones today. What is your favorite place to travel to and why? My favorite places are Saipan Island, Singapore, Macau and Tibet. I adore the crystal clear seawater of Saipan, the wellorganized urban planning of Singapore and the hotels of Macau. As for Tibet, it’s a sacred place where you can get as close as possible to the sky. I want to visit many places in my limited lifetime and get to know people with different background and their customs and understanding of music, especially the local folk music. How do you think one can become a man of exquisite taste? To be an exquisite man is more of a process of self-cultivation, which requires time and energy. It’s also important to be responsible for work and live a life with feeling. What is your plans and hopes for the future? I have two new albums to be released in the near future, and after they are released, my total number of original works will add up to 100. As for my personal life, I want to travel to places that I have never been and learn about different cultures. I wish my loved ones all the best and hope my songs will be wellreceived and heard by more people.

Goya and the Altamira Family will consist of Banco de España’s portrait of the Count of Altamira; the Metropolitan’s beloved Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga, the so-called “Red Boy;” the beautiful portrait of Manuel’s mother and sister, Condesa de Altamira and Her Daughter, María Agustina, from the Metropolitan Museum’s Robert Lehman Collection; and a portrait of Manuel Osorio’s brother Vicente Joaquin de Toledo, from a private collection. All four portraits were painted between 1786 and 1788 when Goya was beginning to experiment with aristocratic portraiture.

A fifth portrait depicting Count Altamira’s middle son, Juan María Osorio, was painted around the same time by Agustín Esteve, one of Goya’s pupils, and will be lent by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Banco de San Carlos (the present-day Banco de España) commissioned Goya to create a series of portraits of the directors of the bank in Madrid, including the full-length depiction of Vicente Joaquín Osorio Moscoso y Guzmán, Count of Altamira. It was the success of this portrait that led to the subsequent commission to Goya for three portraits of members of the count’s family. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) is regarded as the most important Spanish artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Over the course of his long career, Goya moved from jolly and lighthearted to deeply pessimistic and searching in his paintings, drawings, etchings, and frescoes. Born in Fuendetodos, he later moved with his parents to Saragossa and, at age fourteen, began studying with the painter José Luzán Martínez (1710–1785). In 1746, the year of Goya’s birth, the Spanish crown was under the rule of Ferdinand VI. Subsequently, the Bourbon king Charles III (r. 1759–88) ruled the country as an enlightened monarch sympathetic to change, employing ministers who supported radical economic, industrial, and agricultural reform. Goya came to artistic maturity during this age of enlightenment.

You’ve won awards in the past for recruiting and development. What are the most important factors in hiring new employees? The best team members are associates that are willing to grow and put their heart into it. I believe people can be trained on skill and grow with experience. But if you don’t put your heart into your work and maintain the right attitude, then it will never work. Marriott International has a great culture for our associates. Our company is built on family values. We take care of our associates so that they can take care of our customers. I have been with the company for over 24 years and I live day in and day out on this philosophy. We have an open door policy in which every associate is treated fairly and able to speak with any senior manager.

在辛苦工作之余,你会怎样放松自己? 我会尽可能找机会休息放松!因为总要 世界各地到处跑,我很少在家。我儿子已经 八岁了,你知道,孩子到十几岁就不想和大 人呆在一起了。所以,不光是周末,只要有 时间我会尽可能多抽些时间陪陪儿子,真的 要利用好这段时间。 我喜欢和孩子一起散步、 骑车。 只要和他在一起, 就是我最放松的时候。 After working at various Marriott positions in New York and Hong Kong, what are your impressions of Beijing? I think Beijing is a great city with a lot of culture and history. It’s a very unique city with a lot of people coming from different areas. Beijing reminds me a combination of LA, New York and Washington DC. It has the bad traffic of LA, business and art culture like New York and political history like DC. People in Beijing are very accepting of outsiders and people in general are very friendly and helpful. What are your priorities as Marriott International’s Market VP of North China? Currently we have over 19 hotels in my area (operating and pending opening). My role is to co-ordinate and strive to create synergy among our hotels in the area. The ultimate goal is to further build our brand

How do the Marriott hotels in the China (mainland) regions localize? Is there more pressure to have foreign elements? This is a great question. One of our business priorities is localization. We have been doing extremely well. 85% of my General Managers in North China are Chinese nationals and 75% of them are native Chinese. They are very high performers and driving extremely good results. All of our native Chinese General Managers grew up with Marriott. I don’t believe nationality is important and it’s the individual that counts. But we do have many talented people in China and I think we should take advantage of that. Marriott International has a comprehensive training system in place that helps its associates to develop into seasoned professionals. How do you relax after a stressful workday or week? Well, I try to relax! I travel a lot and am often not at home. On weekends or whenever I have time, I will spend it with my son who is 8 years old. I know that kids, once they become teenagers, don’t want to hang out with their parents. So I need to take advantage of this time and give him all my attention whenever possible. I enjoy walking with him or riding the scooter together. When I am with him, I am relaxed.

With rare art, unique materials and a refined yet low-key atmosphere, the Dragon Hotel, Hangzhou, sculpts itself as a creator of a luxurious, elegant experience. This is a substantially different approach from the standardization that other hotel chains partake in - The Dragon, Hangzhou, has collaborated with designer Jean Boggio for Franz to create the “Oriental Impression Building” – the first time in the Chinese hospitality industry that a Chinese hotel has reached out to work with a famous international designer to design rooms with China’s traditional porcelain art as a basis. Renowned French designer Jean Boggio, with a modern perspective, translates China’s traditional essence, infusing the space with Franz’s unique relief techniques, making Oriental Impression a new, yet classical composition. Jean Boggio’s works combine styles from different countries and are popular around the world. He has acted as artistic director at Haviland and also been a designer for Hermes, Ritz, Longwy, and Baccarat. His works are often featured at auctions and are collected by European royalty. The guest rooms in the Oriental Impression Building have four themes: Impression, Elegant Court, Dream, and the Emperor’s

Brocade. The parlor, bedroom, and bathroom in each room have been designed combining Chinese and French aesthetics, providing an elegant, high class experience for hotel guests. The main theme of the “Dream” rooms features flowers and bamboo forests, using bursts of Peony flowers and dense bamboo to reflect China’s ancient and mysterious culture and the Chinese pursuit of honor, wealth, and respect. Decorated in imperial yellow, elegant azure, and rich green, the parlor and bedroom feel like the fulfillment of a dream of a dwelling in an ancient capital, while the tranquil blue, yellow, and tasteful black create a royal bathroom. The “Impression” guest rooms show off China’s natural landscape, architecture, native flora and fauna, and totem culture. The parlor and bedroom are filled with lush violets and Turkish blue. The bathroom, in white, green, and Turkish blue, feels thoroughly luxurious. With a resplendent flower garden as their theme, “Elegant Garden” rooms recreate the bursting warm colors and vigor of flowers in bloom. With the palms and various flowers and trees of southern China, the rooms give expression to the easy-going contentedness of southern China. The parlor and bedroom are decorated in full orange, clean white, and muted teal, with a bathroom in graceful white, purple and Turkish blue. The Emperor’s Brocade rooms have an imperial palace and luxuriant garden theme, giving them the strong vitality of a resplendent forest and the endless Chinese landscape, and telling the countless tales of Chinese royalty and the pursuit of being one of nature. With a Western color display of light blue and bright orange, along with a bold green, the colors embroider modern lives. aims to offer authentic Japanese ramen to every dinner by integrating fresh and quality ingredients, authentic Japanese cooking methods, ramen production and secret soup recipes for a fusion of taste. ine today is the product of all the wine that has come before, in fact, since the first accidental fermentation of grapes some millennia ago. And your wine palate as well is ever so incrementally, drying out; so the amount of sweetness, for example, that appealed to you just yesterday is not exactly the same as today. Let me guess: When you began drinking wine you chose inexpensive, domestic red wine and you mixed it with fruit juice, Coke, Pepsi, whiskey, Cognac or whatever, correct? If so, I’m really glad I was not invited to join you, because I could never have stomached anyone at my table destroying even cheap wine as such. But to prove my point that your wine palate has been maturing since then, try duplicating this initial concoction with any convenient, cheap domestic wine. I’ll bet that now you will find it very sweet and very undesirable. Now recall the chronology of wines with which you next experimented in the exact order in which you tried them over time, so cheap domestic reds without mixers; slightly more expensive domestic wines; moderately priced imported wines; and if you have progressed to truly premium imported wines, finish your experiment with one typical of your more current taste. If you cleanse your palate with water and unsalted crackers or bread in between each wine you taste in this experiment, I am sure you will arrive at the same conclusion: That all but the final more premium imported wine are more sweet than you prefer and leave you quite unsatisfied. If so, congratulations, you’re making progress

as a “wine aficionado”. But technology as well has improved best practices in wine production, aging, storing, shipping and delivery has contributed to a far more enjoyable finished product from Cape Town to Paris; from Santiago to South Australia; and Napa Valley to the finest micro climes of China. In short, there has never been a more fortuitous time to be indulging in and celebrating the premium gifts of the gods. For those of us who have discovered the joys of premium wine consumption in moderation, no holiday or even an evening in a favorite bar, nightclub or restaurant would be the same without the enjoyment of our favorite wines. Wine becomes part of who you are; it helps define you as a sophisticated person, an upwardly mobile aspirational. And you find that you will attract more interesting people with similar aspirations of joining the privileged and successful in the places you frequent. For it is often said that “We are judged by the company we keep”. Show me a premium wine lover and I’ll show you someone with good taste, who is living a more fun, happy existence. And of course, when it comes to romance, only premium wine will do. For as the red sage of the Middle Kingdom famously observed in the September 2007 issue of LifeStyle Magazine “Red as roses can be is the color of my true love’s favorite wine. For this is China, land of a thousand red sun rises, a thousand red sun sets and a thousand red dreams. Red is the color of the revolution, of

the Yangtze and the Pearl Rivers, the rise of the people for the people and the heart that longs to be united with the beloved.” And I continued “Red wine is the magical, romantic elixir that flows through our veins whether near or far from the one we love. It is our Soul’s message that all is not lost on a glass of crimson as sacred as eternity’s gentle touch.” And in the December 2007 LifeStyle “And when I gaze upon the magnificent lady fingers of scarlet glycerin and tannins streaming from the rim of my wine glass, softly whispering ‘Oh, I am so much more than you can imagine’, I knowingly avert my stare to my beloved, for she is as mysterious and deep as all of the treasures from every century and every dynasty ever known to be Chinese.” I am as always and forever more, Red Owl, over & out.

The Cartier Collection has acquired The HuttonMdivani Necklace for $27.44 million after fierce bidding against seven others in the room and on the phone each competing for the piece as they doubled the estimate set by Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The necklace, comprising 27 large jadeite beads of magnificent green color with diameters ranging from 19.20 mm to 15.40 mm, once belonged to Barbara Hutton, the granddaughter of Frank W. Woolworth, who married seven times, and was renowned for spending lavishly on anything that took her fancy. Hutton received the necklace mounted by Cartier with a beautiful ruby and diamond clasp from her father for her first wedding in 1933 to Georgian noble Prince Alexis Mdivani. It had last appeared at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in 1994, selling for HK$33.02 million ($4.27 million at the time).
