MESSAGE FROM TD HALIFAX JAZZ FESTIVAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On behalf of the TD Halifax Jazz Festival’s Board of Directors, I’m thrilled to welcome you to our 37th annual festival — a rich palette of sights, sounds and culture that will ring throughout the city from July 11–16.

As you look through our program guide this year, you’ll see a little something for everybody — from reggae and jazz, to hip–hop and indie pop. I’d encourage you to take in a show or two — whether it’s a name you recognize, or something entirely new.

And while you’re at it, take in the sights our city has to offer. You can stretch your legs at our Hydrostone stage, relax on the grass at our Dartmouth stage. You can nap early and head out after hours at our late–night stage — or enjoy the classic acoustics of St. Matthew’s Church. And of course, you’ll definitely want to check out the TD Main Stage. Set in the heart of

I’d also like to take a moment to applaud all the folks that makes this happen. Our dedicated staff, sponsors, music educators, local artists, and volunteers literally set the stage for the 50,000 spectators we entertain each year.

Have an amazing week!

FEIST

Widely recognized as one of the most compelling vocalists and songwriters in her genre, Leslie Feist is an 11–time Juno Award–winning solo artist and founding member of Broken Social Scene. Her latest album Multitudes, released April 14, 2023, took shape soon after the birth of her daughter and sudden death of her father, a back–to–back convergence of life–altering events that

left the Canadian singer/songwriter with “Nothing performative in me anymore.” In the aftermath of these deeply transformative events, Multitudes affirms Feist’s ability to construct elaborate sonic worlds by following her singular songwriting to its most poetic yet unbridled expression.

JENN GRANT

Jenn Grant’s music is deeply empathetic and generous of heart, so of course one day she would invite the whole country to make it with her. Champagne Problems, her eighth album and first in the producer’s chair alongside partner Daniel Ledwell, gathers 13 musicians in a series of collaborative Canadian magic tricks spun into classic

country, lost disco hits, and ruminative folk fables. Enriched with Canadian talent, Champagne Problems is a unique musical experience that could have only come out of extenuating circumstances, willing partners, and profound vulnerability. It could have only come out of Jenn Grant.

BADBADNOTGOOD

Toronto based jazz ensemble

BADBADNOTGOOD make expansive music that incorporates ‘70s soul–jazz, alternative hip–hop, and experimental electronica influences. BadBadNotGood gained attention in the early 2010s playing jazz covers of hip–hop tracks by the likes of Odd Future and MF Doom. It was a sound they developed on their first two records, 2011’s

BBNG and 2012’s BBNG2, covering songs by A Tribe Called Quest and Kanye West. Since then, they have balanced working on original songs as on 2016’s IV, and collaborating on projects with hip–hop, dance, and neo–soul artists like Ghostface Killah and Kendrick Lamar. 2021’s Talk Memory found the group exploring fusion, new age, and orchestral influences.

R&B

Sudan Archives combines left–field strains of R&B, hip–hop, and experimental electronic with hypnotic string loops and the fiddling style of West Africa, as heard on her critically acclaimed album of 2022 Natural Brown Prom Queen. When Sudan burst onto the scene in 2017 with “Come Meh Way,” she was a violinist and loop maker producing beats in her bedroom. While her debut album Athena drew inspiration by divine

Black feminine power, on Natural Brown Prom Queen Sudan is in character as Britt, the girl next door from Cincinnati who drives around the city with the top down. Natural Brown Prom Queen is Sudan’s most ambitious work to date and a critic’s favorite (Pitchfork #2 Album of the Year).“Sudan Archives is making R&B deeper and stranger.” — New York Times

The Creative Music Workshop (CMW) is an eight–day intensive program where the ensemble is the classroom and improvisation is more than a style, it’s a path for learning. CMW offers two streams; The full–day Core Program (10AM – 5PM daily) and The Creative Process Program which runs for the mornings only (10AM – 5PM for the first weekend; 10AM – 12:30PM daily after that). Both programs run from July 8 to 16, 2023 at the NSCC Ivany Campus, 80 Mawiomi Place, Dartmouth, NS.

CMW students study the fundamental principles of the CMW Creative Process through a range of collective and individual exercises centred around improvisation, movement, listening, meditation, and communication. Students work with each other and the CMW faculty to explore risk–taking, fear, and self–consciousness in relation to their creative process. The program passes on knowledge not only about what it means to be a musician, dancer, etc., but what it means to be a creative person.

CMW faculty includes: J. Anthony Granelli (Head instructor/Electric bass – New York City), Michael Blake (Saxophone–New York City), Susanne Chui (Dance/ Movement – Halifax), Barbara Bash (Visual Art/Calligraphy – New York City), Nicole Rampersaud (Trumpet – Fredericton), Nick Dourado (Piano/Saxophone – Toronto), Doug Cameron (Percussion – Halifax), Andrew Mackelvie – (Saxophone – Halifax), Nicholas Maclean (Guitar – Halifax), Ross Burns (Guitar & CMW coordinator – Halifax).

MALI OBOMSAWIN

Halifax Central Library

Mali Obomsawin is an award winning bassist/ composer from Odanak First Nation. Her debut album Sweet Tooth (Out of Your Head Records 2022) has garnered international acclaim and quickly established her as a young rising jazz star and an innovative folk music visionary. Seamlessly melding chorale–like spirituals, folk melodies, and post–Albert Ayler free jazz, Obomsawin’s compositions occupy a universe completely their own. Sweet Tooth has topped year end lists from NPR, The Guardian, Jazz Critics Poll, and more, delivering a suite of “gripping, dynamic, and thunderous music.” — JazzTimes

STINGRAY MUSIC RISING STARS PROGRAM

The TD Halifax Jazz Festival is pleased to present the Stingray Rising Stars Program. Stingray is committed to putting Canadian musicians on the map! Stingray knows music, and as such, it knows that some of the greatest talent out there is found in its own backyard. The Stingray Rising Stars Program sets out to discover, encourage, promote, and champion new up–and–coming Canadian artists.

To that end, Stingray has partnered with numerous industry organisations and regional festivals to offer prizes and provide showcase opportunities to great new Canadian talent of all genres.

Every day during the festival listen to music by the shortlisted contestants on the TD Main Stage. Through a two–tiered process of peer assessment and online voting, one individual will receive a $4000 prize to jumpstart their career.
