The colder months have us eating food that warms us from the inside, our recipes this month will do just that (page 32) washed down with a glass or two of winter warming Bordeaux wines (page 35) that will set you up nicely for a cosy evening huddled round the fire. What better way to whet the appetite for some sunshine and travel later in the year (hopefully) than to share with you Maslina Resort, a luxury hotel in Croatia (page 48) or if you want to stay closer to home and feel like you’re in an episode of `The Crown’ then York House in Devon (page 50) is a must. And of course, with a New Year comes the everburning question of “What will life hold for me this year” well we don’t know about the year but we certainly know about the month, turn to page 56 to read this month’s stars. Stay Safe & Well

Five Reasons you can’t Stick to your Healthy Eating Plan If healthy eating plans keep falling through, it can often be down to five main reasons, from not setting clear goals, to being too restrictive and having subconscious beliefs about food, if you’re struggling to keep to a set eating plan, it’s important to look into exactly why you may be breaking it.
Dr Rachel Evans (PhD) shares five reasons we often find ourselves failing our healthy eating regimes and her professional advice on what to do to stay on track. 1: You haven’t set clear goals Goals can often be too vague and it’s not enough to say that you just want to eat ‘less sugar’ or ‘more fruit and vegetables’, as it’s then difficult to know exactly what you’re working towards and track progress. Without clear, identifiable goals – you could be left feeling unsure about what action you need to take when eating healthily, which can lead to no action being taken!
2: The goals you have set are too restrictive Even with clear goals, if you can’t keep to an eating plan, it may be because it’s too restrictive, which can lead to a state of physiological and psychological deprivation. When we don’t consume enough, we often end up thinking a lot more about food, which is a survival mechanism and can cause us to become irritable and crave ‘junk’ foods. If you believe you are meeting your body’s energy requirements but are still finding it difficult to stick to your healthy eating plan, then this may be because you are feeling mentally restricted, as when we cut out certain foods it can actually make them more attractive, because typically we want what we can’t have. 3: You think you have ‘blown it’ If you believe you have ‘blown it’, in psychology this is called the abstinence violation effect; when you have one thing off plan which leads to total collapse. This
cycle of feeling like you have blown it, so you may as well eat everything you want to and start again with healthy eating on Monday, results in people often eating more unhealthy foods than usual, because they believe they won’t be able to eat that food again when they get back on plan - which can be damaging to long term healthy eating plans altogether.
4: You are trying to get by on pure willpower We often believe that willpower is all we need to stick to a diet, but my own research has found that good self-control did not predict how well people could stick to their intentions to eat healthily; habits and how people ate in the past was more important.
5: Subconscious beliefs about food If you ever feel like you know exactly what you should be doing to stick to your plan, but something is keeping you stuck in old habits of overeating, it can often feel like you are sabotaging yourself over and over again, and this behaviour is likely to be driven by deep subconscious beliefs about food and yourself which can be difficult to break. To help get a grip on healthy eating plans, it’s important to be clear on goals, to ensure that they aren’t too restrictive, and to take small sustainable steps. Rather than beating yourself up and eating more, try to learn from slip-ups and form new healthy habits instead of relying on willpower.
One of the most effective ways to combat negative subconscious beliefs and bad eating patterns is to recognise patterns from childhood and when exactly they are showing up in life now. Another way to tackle these behaviours is to look into hypnotherapy, to directly access the subconscious mind and find the root of eating issues - through hypnotherapy, these can be rewired for more helpful thought patterns, to help healthy eating become more achievable.

Midlife Madness I suppose it all started to happen a while ago – during our first lockdown when enjoying a glass of wine in the garden on a summer evening, I started to realise that I love fairy lights. So of course, I started putting them all over the garden creating a wonderful fairy grotto effect. But as nights started to draw in and temperatures dropped, I started to create a similar ambience in the house.
It must be acknowledged that I knew others in the household were not as keen on it as I was but I was undeterred. I have always enjoyed aspects of what people might call the mystical world. I believe in the law of attraction, in miracles, in the power of plants to heal, in serendipitous happenings, in magic and occasionally I swear I could even stretch to believing in unicorns.
I confess to having a book of spells and in some ways feel I could get in touch with my witch persona but let’s be honest they’ve had a bit of a bad rep completely different ‘branding’ to fairies! It was pretty much open season on witches for decades – essentially women who were usually trying to help other women but were then burned or drowned for their efforts – I won’t use this space to go off on a diatribe about misogynistic males ……. but I could!
So, recently I’ve been doing a bit of Feng Shui thing in the house, and a Buddha is on my Christmas list to create a nice meditation space in the garden. I also started to investigate crystals – as a tool for healing. Do I understand how on earth they can work? Not at all but I know they are thought to promote the flow of energy AND they have been used for thousands of years. Am I willing to give them a try given that it’s hard to imagine them doing any harm? Definitely! The other day on a work call with someone I’d describe as having her feet firmly on the
ground, a colleague told me one of her favourite ‘rituals’ bit of a scary word in itself – makes me think of semi naked folk dancing round trees in a forest somewhere making strange noises- was after her baby was in bed she’d sit with her tea and amethyst crystals to re-set herself! But that actually got me looking at rituals and I found they don’t all involve forests, darkness or semi-nakedness, yes I know a bit of a shame in some ways, I was particularly drawn by moon rituals.
There is a belief that many of us are influenced by the moon –before you dismiss the thought remember that the Moon’s gravitational pull causes tides, there is clearly some pretty powerful energy and if I can tap into some of that why wouldn’t I? As it happens many Moon related rituals are pretty simple and involve setting intentions, lighting candles and such and usually geared towards you making decisions reviewing where you are and where you want to be, sort of goal setting but tapping into some other energy.
Now the thing is the family feel I’ve gone a bit mad. Clearly, I’m not – I’m just getting in touch with more ethereal worlds and I’m not harming anyone else or myself so please hold fire with the cries to burn or drown – though thankfully at least here we’ve moved on a bit. My longsuffering husband regards it as a phase – which it might be though he has made the odd joke about finding himself turned into a frog – not very supportive – but I’ll continue to enjoy it and who knows maybe life will become more magical – must confess to buying myself a wand – which has all sorts of uses I’ve discovered but no one has become a frog or bat yet – I can always live in hope!!

Why a De-clutter might be just what you need! I guess we are all aware that our physical environment can have a significant impact upon us. When the environment is chaotic often its hard to concentrate or relax although, what is chaos for one might be a sea of tranquillity for someone else.
The fact is that clutter can cause stress. According to the principles of feng shui clutter can drain you of positive energy – you actually ‘feel’ the impact of clutter. Most of us want our home and the different spaces within it to be places that are a haven from stress not somewhere that actually adds to our stress. Clutter also costs us in terms of time – we’ve all had times when we might have spent ages hunting for stuff whereas if there’d been just a teeny bit more organisation and less clutter, we’d have found it more quickly. Living in clutter can even cost you money, we’ve probably all had receipts we’ve lost that means we can’t take stuff back or ‘vouchers’ that have gone out of date – even bills that may have been unpaid causing problems later. Of course, decluttering can happen at any time of the year but Spring is when many people decide to have a clear out and clean. If you come into that category then be assured that you are not only decluttering but taking part in an ancient tradition. The roots of spring cleaning can be found in many cultures and religions, linked to the Jewish Passover, Greek orthodox ‘clean week’ and in Iranian and Persian culture prior to new year.
In Victorian London there was an annual spring clean to rid homes of winter grime and open windows to get rid of soot from coal fires. This of course would have a number of health benefits and it remains true that clutter gathers dust and if places are difficult to clean, we are less likely to battle to clean them and of course that isn’t good for any of us. Dust in itself can be an allergen for many, but also the act of cleaning is exercise – you can actually burn calories while decluttering and cleaning and its good for our mental health to as its easier to relax and live ‘efficiently’ imagine not having to hunt for things all the time or move piles of stuff to reach the thing you are after! With all those benefits what are you waiting for! Well, it can be daunting but like many things getting started is the hardest part, though it needs to be said that there are companies that do it for you if it really does feel like you can’t face it – certainly any outsider
would be way more ruthless than I’d ever be.
You can launch into it as a weekend, or months long project if your house resembles mine, but you can also approach it by allowing just a small amount of time each day, or picking one area, cupboard or ‘type’ of clutter and tackling that then moving onto another. It may take longer so you may not get the same sense of satisfaction but it will be a more manageable approach. Unless your home really is worthy of a slot on a TV show it’s likely there are particular problem areas, things like kitchen cupboards with long forgotten herbs that went out of date decades ago, wardrobes that have become hiding places for all the clothes you don’t wear, items like photographs or bills though many of those may be digital, (digital decluttering is a whole different issue). One way to declutter is to pick a room and target the problem area first – usually the rest falls into place, or worst-case scenario falls on your head as you open the door! Whenever you tackle an area or room think about what you want to keep, or get rid of – which may be gifting, donating or selling. It is very easy to hang onto things that we don’t use and haven’t used in ages, many people have a ‘just in case’ mentality so keep things they haven’t used in ages, but likelihood is if you haven’t used in the last couple of years you are not likely to, meanwhile someone else could benefit from it. Just think if you got rid of just one unused item a day that would be 365 less things in your home by this time next year! Creating order can be easier with good, ample storage so sometimes investing in some appropriate storage can help a lot with organisation but don’t be tempted to use it to hang on to lots of unwanted ‘stuff’.
But one of the really important aspects of decluttering is that it can free us in other ways. When we start clearing our physical environment it often becomes easier to recognise the emotional ‘clutter’ we carry – hurts we’ve buried, frustrations we haven’t let go of, relationships that have become toxic in some way, which in turn get in the way of dreams, wishes and desires we may have for the future. In many ways decluttering is a step in the process to creating the life you dream of – one that is happy and fulfilling. Ways to Beat Blue Monday
The 21st of January, also known as the most depressing day of the year, is slowly creeping up on us. Our experts have provided their top ‘pick me ups’ to help you beat not only Blue Monday but all of those dreaded Mondays…
Reach out to those around you When it’s an overcast grey day we may feel gloomy and choose to avoid being sociable. This avoidance may lead to a spiral of negativity. Whilst experiencing prolonged winters and occasional low mood, reaching out and connecting with a friend can improve it instantly. If this is ‘too much’ then connect via text or email and arrange to call or have them call you.
Get a good night’s sleep Sleep is a significant part of living a healthy lifestyle, and after a decent amount of ‘zzzs’ it can help you put things into perspective and manage your nerves. “Stress, sleep and anxiety are all related. If we don’t get enough sleep we can find it harder to adapt to challenging situations, and when we can't cope as efficiently with stress, it can be harder to have a good night’s rest. “Magnesium is known as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’ and is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, which helps us fall into a peaceful sleep. To ensure you’re getting enough magnesium, try and include plenty of magnesiumrich foods in your diet such as, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables.
Eat food that boosts your mood In the depths of winter, there’s no doubt that you feel like stocking up on those comfort foods. Which is no surprise because our genes have a seasonal clock and that carb crave is just part of our seasonal physiology. Just like to so many animals that hibernate over the Winter, we too have that hibernate instinct. So, lean into those feelings instead of fighting them. Tune into your seasonal clock. If you need to eat to feel the comfort of Winter then this is not something to fight against.
Boost your immunity There’s nothing worse than feeling ill on a dark winter day. Give yourself an immunity boost in the morning with Urgent-C (£14.95 www.provenprobiotics.co.uk) from Pro-Ven Probiotics. The product was designed to support our immune system and give it the support it needs; whilst also maintaining gut health with 5 billion of the extensively studied Lab4 friendly bacteria, which form a natural part of the human intestinal microbiome. It also contains contains 1000mg of vitamin C, along with vitamin D, zinc, selenium and beta glucans - which all contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Don’t relate to Pathetic Fallacy Just like weather, exercise has a big impact on mood and a little exercise goes a long way. It promotes the feel-good hormone, serotonin, that regulates mood, sleep and appetite. By taking a long leisurely walk or having a short burst of interval training, you can alleviate symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. It’s even more beneficial to exercise outside, even in the rain. Even walking on grey days allows UV exposure and regulates circadian rhythm and mood.
Dry February Struggling to budge the Christmas bulge? We all know that alcohol is an anti-depressant, so not only will Dry January help improve your mood, but it could also help budge the extra chub that you may have added on over Christmas. “Alcohol stimulates appetite so you are more likely to over eat. It also affects judgment and willpower so you are less likely to make healthy food choices. What’s more, it provides ‘empty’ calories that are readily converted into fat in the body” explains Dr. Sarah Brewer, working in association with CuraLin Diabetes supplement (www.curalife.com). If you’re too late for dry January, be different and try dry February.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. Peel and finely chop the onions, then place in a large shallow casserole pan on a mediumlow heat with 1 tbsp of olive oil and cook for 15 minutes, or until soft and sweet. Shred the turkey and roughly chop the leftover vegetables, then stir into the pan with the harissa. Scrunch in the tomatoes with ½ a tin’s worth of water, destone and add the olives, then reduce the heat to low and cook for 20 minutes, or until thick and delicious. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper, then pick, roughly chop and stir through the parsley. Grease a 20cm-springform cake tin
lightly with oil. Layer the filo over the base and all up the sides – letting it hang generously over the edges, so you can fold it back over the top – brushing with a little oil between each layer. Sprinkle the dry couscous onto the filo base and pour over the filling, then fold the filo back over the top, roughly scrunching it into place. Brush with 1 tsp of oil, then bake at the bottom of the oven for 50 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Carefully release the pie from the tin and transfer to a board. Delicious served hot with a dollop of yogurt, a dash of chilli sauce and a squeeze of lemon juice. Recipe from Jamie Oliver.

Butternut Squash Ravioli
Ingredients
Pasta Dough: 300 g flour type 00 3 eggs Drizzle of olive oil Salt
For the Filling: 300 g squash Sprig of rosemary/sage 1 bay leaf 1 large shallot, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 50 g parmesan, grated 100 g goats’ cheese 50 g fresh breadcrumbs Olive oil 1 egg, beaten
For the Sauce: Large knob of butter 1 tablespoon capers and some of their juice Juice of a lemon Sliced almonds grated parmesan Chopped parsley
“An authentic ravioli recipe, that is full of flavour from Brescia in Lombardy, Italy”.
Method Make the dough by putting into the food processor and whizzing into a ball. Cover with cling film and refrigerate. Cut the squash into small chunks and fry off gently with chopped rosemary, shallots, bay leaf and seasoning. Add a small drop of water then cover and stew until tender. Take off the lid and boil hard until all the liquid has evaporated. When the mixture is cold, add the breadcrumbs, parmesan and goat’s cheese. Check for seasoning. Cut the dough into 8 segments and roll out each segment of dough in the pasta machine, starting on the widest setting and re-rolling until you have come to the finest setting. Lay out on the table and egg wash 4 of the strips of pasta and then place a spoonful of the mixture, equally spaced. Then place the pieces without egg wash on top. Press around each mound in order for the pasta to stick and then cut out rounds with a cutter, or cut into squares. Go around each one again with your fingers and then place on a tray lined with a tea towel. At this point, freeze them making sure they aren’t touching each other. When frozen, remove from the tray and put into containers. Melt the butter in a large frying pan and add the almonds to brown a little, then the capers and lemon. Put a large pan of water on to heat and, before it comes to the boil, add the frozen ravioli, bring back to the boil and cook for about 2 minutes. Drain and add to the frying pan to coat. Sprinkle with parmesan and serve. Recipe from ‘Mountain to Sea’ by Kate Probert

Sticky Fig and Walnut Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce Ingredients
“Comfort food doesn’t come any better than this delicious sticky fig pudding, perfect for cold winter evenings.”
100g dried figs, roughly chopped 0.5 tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g unsalted butter 100g light soft brown sugar 2 free-range eggs 0.5 tsp vanilla extract 175g self-raising flour 50g walnuts, toasted and chopped For the sauce: 175g light soft brown sugar 75g unsalted butter 200ml double cream 50g walnuts, toasted and chopped 0.5 tsp vanilla extract 6 x 200ml metal pudding basins
Method Preheat the oven to 180 C, 160 C fan, 350 F, gas 4. Butter and flour the pudding basins, tapping out any excess flour. Place the figs in a bowl with the bicarbonate of soda and 200ml (7fl oz) boiling water. Stir well and set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until smooth and fluffy. Beat the eggs with the vanilla and pour on to the butter and sugar mixture, beating continuously. Don't be alarmed if the mixture looks curdled at this stage. Add the flour and beat well, then pour in the figs, walnuts and all the liquid. Mix well. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until well risen and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 5 minutes before turning out on to plates. To make the sauce, place all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Pour a couple of spoonfuls over each pudding and serve the rest in a warmed jug. Add a scoop of clotted cream.

Fry’s Footie Corner
Well, here we are again. Lockdown part three, but at least, despite huge challenges, elite football can continue, and we hope and pray that we can finish the campaign without the need for PPG – we were burned before that route and we feel we are once again in a decent position for the challenging schedule that remains.
As you may have seen, we had numerous games called off over the festive period due to Covid-19 cases within our camp and also within the Doncaster camp. In all my time in the game, that is the first time I have not been involved in fixtures on Boxing Day and over the New Year period and it was immensely frustrating for all.
I know first hand that this pandemic is incredibly tough to deal with. I tested positive back in November and it floored me. I was side-lined for quite a while and it was a tough fight, but given my medical history, that would come as no surprise to many. I am back and fighting fit and although I wouldn’t put myself up front this weekend, I feel I could do a job from the bench (!). Of course, living through a pandemic in football provides financial challenges and no player at any club is not available for transfer and despite those challenges, the January transfer window was still an active one both within the EFL and the Premier League.
Speaking of the Premier League, it is nice to see a really open league this year. I guess most would not be surprised by that given the amount of games, Covid-19 challenges and of course injuries, but it is refreshing to see nobody running away with it. At the top, Manchester United have provided a really interesting story because I don’t think anyone would have tipped them for the title, but consistency has proved key for them in the last couple of months whilst others around them have struggled to put a run of results together, Liverpool and Chelsea included. Chelsea spent a lot of money in the summer and with that outlay comes expectation. I am sure Frank Lampard would have expected that. When you make as many changes as they have in personnel, it does take time to find a formula, but he is at a club where patience is not ever a virtue.
They, for me, have the best squad in the Premier League with plenty of youth and experience to call upon from the substitutes bench. I am sure given time, Frank will get it right and if this isn’t there year, I am sure next term will be a better effort. Stay safe during this period.

When the Russell family moves into the house across the way, they appear to be the perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldnยนt, her world begins to crumble and shocking secrets are laid bare. Forced to prove what she saw actually happened, everyone begins to question if what occurred was real or imagined. Is it paranoia or did it happen? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one and nothing is what it seems. Release Date: 25th December 2020
