LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
From the Roots
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
A
s we celebrate Easter this month, it appears the Serenity prayer comes to mind for me. Life is precious, but we can spend so much time trying to understand something that years can pass by while we do. Time has become much more valuable to me recently for several reasons, and I appreciate that I’m understanding that more each day. I’m grateful for the reminders. As you know, our magazine recently started writing stories about the legacy of brave people out there in the world -- what they have been through, what they had to overcome and what lessons they bring us. Their lessons are meant for all of us and intended to be shared with others. They certainly do bring perspective. This month, we had the good fortune of meeting a beautiful soul who lives in our own community. Her name is Helene Kereluk (cover photo). Wow, what an amazing lady! Her “nine lives” story of sorts should be heard by everyone. No doubt her experiences it will make you appreciate life more. Her recollections of overcoming overwhelming odds to be here – and to be happy! – are simply inspiring. To me, she transformed what some might consider the depths of despair – “a man at his worst” -- into beautiful art. What a true blessing to be able to meet her. Along with the other wonderful stories we have for you this month, we want to wish you and your family a Happy Easter. May every day be the day you see the preciousness of life in a way that leaves you even more grateful than yesterday. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

Travel Smart: Passports and Visas
I
recently got back from a trip to Kenya. It was my second time visiting Africa, but certainly not my last. I love that continent. East Africa is so different from South Africa. West Africa is completely different from the North. There’s just so much to see!
Though I could talk your ear off—or write enough to fill the Aging Tree Legacy magazine—all about my travels and experiences in Africa, I’d actually like to fo-
cus on a few of the cool gadgets, gears, and tips on packing and planning for an international trip.
Passports and Visas
Passports—Did you know that to go on any international trip with a flight your passport should be valid for 6 months past the date of your scheduled return? The airlines will actually deny a traveler boarding if the passport has less than 6 months validity past the date of return, though this is based on the rules and regulations of the specific country a passenger is flying to. Take Mexico, for example: There is a HARD STOP of a passenger even gaining their boarding pass if you don’t have 6 months or more validity past the date of return. Visas—No, not those handy pieces of plastic we live off. A visa is a document for entry into a specific country, in addition to one’s passport. Only specific countries require them, and the rules and regulations change per citizenship and country. When I went to Zimbabwe to see Victoria Falls I needed a multi entry visa because I was going to both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides of the falls. Kenya also required one. Both sets of visas could be purchased directly from the border patrol at crossing. I’m

By Amanda M. Vallone going with a group to Vietnam and Cambodia in April, and both countries require US Citizens to obtain a visa, too. Though it seems a daunting task to obtain visas, to even know if they’re necessary, but the way I look at it is if you want anything in life, you should be willing to do a little bit of paperwork to obtain it.
Crossing the Border of the USA
On my recent trip home from Kenya I took an Emirates flight. You know, that one Jennifer Aniston advertises with a shower onboard and a bar? Though Jenny was not on board our flight, I will say the customer service was above average. Upon exiting my Emirates flight in Orlando, I was directly fed down a line into customs. The line was divided into US passport holders, foreign visitors, and a tiny little line for staff and crew PLUS mobile passport holders. What the heck is a mobile passport? This little app was a godsend! It’s an app on your phone or tablet. You create your profile which includes your name, a current photo (somewhat mugshot-esque), a picture of your passport, and your travel information.
|6|
Frequent cruiser? You can use this app!
Flying into the US for your first time from an international trip? You can use it!
What are the perks? You essentially skip a line of 200 people in favor of a line of 5-10 passengers in most cases. The catch is you cannot start this application until you are re-
turning to the USA and basically landed in the destination of which you are crossing the border. Need help? I will certainly be happy to help you set this up to make your travel easier! Our goal at Roseborough is to fulfill the travel dreams of our clients. Part of that is making sure you enjoy the adventure. We love to make your experience as easy and pain free as possible. One of my next trips is going to Spain. We are going to Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, and Barcelona. I am so excited about this trip. I have an amazing group from Volusia County
going with me, and there are only a few seats left for you to come along too. But you want to know one of the best “planning” pieces? No visas are required! So, if this article just scared you (which I hope it didn’t) into not wanting to deal with visas, ask for a trip that doesn’t need a visa. There are several hundreds, maybe even thousands, of vacations you can go without a visa. But don’t let a little paperwork hold you back from an amazing adventure. I promise, you will not regret it. Call Aging Tree at 1-866-320-8803 to learn more about any of these destinations call the Aging Tree or Roseborough Travel.

Helene's Near Misses
A legacy of caring and daring greatly
H
elene Kereluk of DeLand is the queen of near misses. Or, she simply may be the most fortunate German-born, Belgium-raised, DeLand-living 92-year-old you are about to get to know.
She found food when there was none. She walked lightly when Nazis were listening. She left the farmhouse hours before the Germans destroyed it. She avoided joining the group that would have walked her straight into a concentration camp. Helene Kereluk has racked up her fair share of near misses and she’d tell you luck had little to do with it. *** Helene was born in Germany in 1926. The first of 11 children, her father relocated her and her mother to Belgium where her future brothers and sisters were born and raised. It was the early 30s then, and her father already was hearing talks of war. Moving
them to historically neutral Belgium was a solid plan. As his family grew, Helene’s father watched threat to Belgium grow as well. Without warning, the Germans invaded the country in May 1940. Many Belgian workers, including Helene’s father, were deported to Germany to work in factories during the war. Helene was 16 when he left. She, too, was transported to work in Germany during the war, until her mother pleaded through the Red Cross for her return home. The family needed her. As the oldest, Helene was a co-head of household with her mother, acting as a third parent in her father’s absence. Helene helped support the family in all conceivable ways.
“I know what hungry is”
Helene’s priority during wartime was finding food for her family. Germans had greatly restricted Belgium’s borders and thus its food imports. The emergency rationing system had severely restricted food as well. Belgians were losing weight...and hope. “I know what hungry is,” said Helene. “I was always thinking of the children, always about the children.” She had to find food for her brothers and sisters; the pantry was empty. Helene remembers vividly collecting her mother’s jewelry, fabric and other valuables and traversing the countryside via train

By Vickie Pleus, APR, CPRC to Luxemburg where she traded everything they owned for food. On a good day, she’d return home with 100 pounds of food on her back, crossing creeks and forests for miles before catching the return train home. She and her brother were careful to walk quietly, avoiding branches or brush below, as to not be discovered by the patrolling Germans. They were watching. They were always watching. Once, Helene recalls, the Germans stopped the train before it returned, and stripped every rider of their food. They literally took the food off the children’s backs. Helene could not go home empty handed. She was determined not to. “My little brother was crying, saying, ‘What are we going to tell mother? We have no food.’ But, I was always observing, and I noticed something on the way to Luxembourg that day,” she remembered. “I said to my brother, ‘We’re going to get off at the next station.’” Helene had seen a field of potatoes on the way to Luxembourg and they stopped there on the way back home. They dug up the potatoes with their small hands and packed a sack. It was a matter of life or death. Her cousin Maria joined them on a food trip once, but she didn’t stick with Helene that day. Maria was picked up by Germans. The cont. pg 10

family learned of her fate months later.
From potatoes to butter
Belgium was nearing liberation in the years that followed, but the fighting continued. General George Patton and his soldiers were poised in Belgium and ready to push the Germans back. Battle of the Bulge was in full swing. A few miles away, Helene’s mother asked Helen to fetch some butter. She baked waffles and asked Helene to bring the waffles to the soldiers stationed near a farmhouse and return home with butter. It was then she first met U.S. soldier Roman Kereluk. They met several times for the same exchange. Tagging along with Roman was his French-speaking buddy who interpreted their conversation so he could talk to the pretty girl named Helene. On one of the trips, as she hopped on her bike to head back home, she noticed a Jeep speeding her way. Her heart began to pound. This could not be good. An official jumped from the Jeep. “Hey! What are you doing here?” Helene stopped cold. “I came from the farmhouse. I brought the waffles the soldiers are eating,” she replied.
The officer spoke no French, but he grabbed Helene’s hands. He told her through another solider, “Tell her ‘thank you.’” The officer was General Patton. Another trip to get butter was equally anxiety ridden. Helene hopped on her bike to head home, but about halfway there was stopped by a truck. It looked like an American truck and the soldiers looked American, “but I knew it was the Germans in disguise,” she remembered. “Where have you come from? Have you seen anything? Have you heard anything? Where are you going?” They peppered her with questions. Helene explained her trip to the farmhouse and how she’s heading back home. She’d not seen or heard anything. “Get in the truck. We’ll take you home,” they insisted. “I just started praying,” said Helene. “Please God. Please God.” I knew my route, and they were taking a different route. I was convinced they were Germans. Finally, the truck got on the right road. When I got off that truck, I nearly kissed the ground,” she said. Helene told her mother what had occurred and went to bed later that evening. Her mother – usually preoccupied with all
the children and having a stern countenance besides – seemed unmoved by the dramatic story. But at about 3 a.m. Helene’s mother woke her. “I’m so glad you’re home safely,” said her mother. It turns out that the farmhouse Helene visited often had been destroyed by the Germans that afternoon, and landmines now laced the familiar landscape.
The one-dollar judgement
A year after the war ended, Roman Kereluk married Helene after sending for her from Chicago and they made a home there. She sat before a judge five years later seeking her U.S. citizenship. Impressively, she prepared by reading the Unites States Constitution...twice. The moment had arrived. The judge hearing her case rummaged through his pockets and pulled out some cash. “Mrs. Kereluk, who’s on the one-dollar bill?” “I do not know,” she said, and felt her face burn with worry and embarrassment. “It’s okay,” he said, “Even some Americans don’t know who’s on the dollar bill.” He never asked her a question about the Constitution.

A woman with many gifts
Predictably, Helene missed a lot of school taking care of her siblings and her oft-ailing mother during the years her father worked for the Germans. But she was able to keep up with her academics – so much so that her principal advised Helene’s mother she was ready for college. Her mother refused; Helene was too young, she insisted. Instead, she sent | 10 |
her to a sewing school in Belgium, building upon Helene’s love of sketching clothing and figures which had preoccupied her creative mind for many of her adolescent years. Even today, Helene owns the hand-stitched blouse that earned her the diploma. Creativity would continue to define her journey through her teenage years and at least 70 more. She picked up art in Chicago again and then once more when she and her husband moved to DeLand in the 70s. Her work was exhibited in hospitals and banks throughout West Volusia County. She took classes at a longtime DeLand studio, Feasel’s, and taught there for several years, too. Today, as a Cloisters resident,

Roman lived many more years here, and Helene was his caretaker, returning to work in DeLand to provide income and insurance for her ailing husband and to refresh their depleting bank account. She’s always been providing for her family. If there was no food, she’d walk miles to find some. If the water stopped running, she’d grab buckets and collect it. If her husband was disabled, she’d resurrect her career and care for him. Roman died six months after their 50th wedding anniversary

She encourages readers to help the hungry in our community. Every Sunday, she takes food from her pantry and brings it to church. “If everyone donated one item, we’d have a lot of food in there,” she observed. “I don’t miss a Sunday.” Helene Kereluk has lived a life full of near misses, yes, but also a life of full-blown catches, too. There’s no embellishment in her stories, and no self-aggrandizing in her tone. Hers is an example of
she’s trained dozens of students, relaying her love of watercolor, acrylic, oils, pastel, charcoal and collages. Today, the walls of The Cloisters are adorned with more than 100 of her pieces. “I went through a lot as a child,” said Helene, “But that’s why I think I’m rewarded now with the painting and art. God has given me that.”
– a full 25 years after the doctor had predicted. She and Roman had two children – Danielle and Richard – and their family has grown to include two grandchildren and three great grandchildren, the newest named for Helene. Little Nora Helene has a head full of dark brown hair. *** At 92, and while living with rheumatoid arthritis, Helene’s vibrant blue eyes are happy and welcoming. She’s not been hardened by war, nor jaded by hate. She largely attributes her overcoming challenges in life to her faith. She’ll tell you that God has
self-sacrifice through love, service and faith, and it appears that the trough never empties. Her well of giving runs deep, and across the miles, hunger, disappointments and obstacles, it only seems to have gotten deeper.

Aging Happy - Part 1, 3-part series
“Worries” of Older Americans By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP
Part 1: Maintaining Optimal Health, Mental and Brain Health and the importance of Social Ties and Support.
H
ave you heard that an estimated 10,000 baby boomers turn age 65 each day? The collective voice of this growing group is redefining how we age. The National Council of Aging and others recently analyzed the top concerns of older Americans. The results are both insightful and a call to action. In this 3 Part Series entitled “Aging Happy” we’ll discuss the Top Ten “Worries” of Older Americans. Part 1 speaks to Maintaining Optimal Health, Mental and Brain Health and the importance of Social Ties and Support. This foundation will serve as a catalyst for meaningful conversations about next steps along the journey to aging gracefully with health and vitality. Maintaining physical and mental health in addition to preserving memory is a significant concern. Be encouraged that the strategies and tools for each one of these areas support all of these at the same time.
Do you feel rested? The latest sleep recommendations for adults over 65 years is 7-8 hours; 5 to 6 hours or 9 hours may be adequate but amounts outside of these ranges can be a concern. Feeling rested when you rise in the morning with sufficient energy for activities is the goal. Protect and support this essential part of your plan for health. Did you know that adequate hydration can decrease your risk for heart issues and stroke? Our perception of thirst decreases as we age and is not a reliable indicator of the need to drink. Consult with your health care provider to determine if there are any special recommendations for your daily water intake. An eating plan rich in fruits and vegetables, healthy carbohydrates and fats will provide the cellular nutrition to fuel your body and support overall health, fitness and vitality. This is foundational at any age and especially important to minimize our risk of chronic illness and disease. The

social connection at meal time is important. Dining alone most of the time can be a risk factor for malnutrition. Stress is a part of daily life though allowing it to overwhelm our lives can lead to health issues including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other illnesses. Stress management solutions include: finding a hobby; time with friends; singing and dancing; deep breathing, meditation or yoga and connecting with nature to name a few. Movement is an excellent stress reliever and experts recommend moderate exercise for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes each week. Muscle-strengthening activities for two or more days a week that work all major muscle groups is also important. Statistics show that less than one-third of Americans aged 65+ meet this recommendation. There are many proven programs that help keep seniors active. Silver Sneakers and EnhanceFitness are two such programs. Participants report increased strength, improved balance and flexibility. This boost in activity can also elevate mood. It is estimated that 1 in 10 seniors suffer from depression and increased activity, as well as the cont. pg 13 | 12 |
social connections that happen in the process, can be helpful. How can you tell if someone is depressed? Often difficult to determine this contributes to misdiagnosis and undertreatment according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Depression is often thought of as a normal part of aging especially if there is a chronic illness or loss of function, but it is a true and treatable medical condition. Someone who is depressed has feelings of sadness or anxiety that last for weeks and may also experience: • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness • Irritability, restlessness • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable
• Fatigue and decreased energy • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions • Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping • Overeating or appetite loss • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not get better, even with treatment It is important to share with family, health care provider, clergy, counselor or other trusted professional your concerns in this area so that you can access the necessary support. Where You Go for Rehabilitation
Connected care for limb loss patients
DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE By Better Care for Stroke Rehabilitation, HLS, Staff Writer April is Limb Loss Awareness Month and according to the Amputee Coalition, there are more than two million people in the United States living with limb loss. Limb loss or amputation can result from trauma, cancer, vascular disease or diabetes. Amputee rehabilitation programs, like the one at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altamonte Springs, allow patients to regain independence and build confidence after experiencing limb loss. Here are a few of the multidisciplinary care providers a patient may encounter during their limb loss rehabilitation journey: A rehabilitation physician or physiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in rehabilitative medicine. Physical therapy and occupational therapy help patients regain strength, balance and function to adapt to activities after upper and/or lower limb loss. Prosthetic training teaches patients how to safely use new prosthetic devices, adaptive equipment and regain functional independence. Wound care coordinators educate patients on proper wound care and limb management. Emphasis is also placed on skin inspection and prevention of wounds to the residual limb and the unaffected limb. While no one expects limb loss, more than 185,000 amputations occur each year. To learn more about how rehabilitation at HealthSouth Altamonte Springs aids in limb loss recovery, visit healthsouthaltamontesprings.com or call 407 587-8600.

After staying the same for five years, the amount you can give away to any one individual in a year without reporting the gift will increase in 2018. The annual gift tax exclusion for 2018 is $15,000. This means that any person who gives away $15,000 or less to any one individual does not have to report the gift or gifts to the IRS. Most think that if you give away more than $15,000, that you’ll have to pay taxes. WRONG!!
You will only have to report the gift to the IRS. But no tax will be due, if you haven’t given away more than allowed over your lifetime. The IRS allows individuals to give away a total of $11.2 million and couples $22.4 million during their lifetimes before a gift tax is owed. This exclusion means that even if you must file a gift tax return (Form 709) because you gave away more than $15,000 to any one person in a particular year, you will owe taxes only if you have given away more than $11.2 million (for an individual) or $22.4 million (for a couple) in the past.
By Scott A. Selis, Esq.
2016 Elder Law Attorney of the Year
I have been doing Estate Planning and Elder Care Legal Planning since 2006. Although I have represented people with lots of money, none of them had given away tens of millions of dollars. As a result, I must conclude that the filing of a gift tax return is merely a formality for nearly everyone. Scott A. Selis is the 2016 Elder Law Attorney of the Year with offices in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. He serves on the Legislative and Medicaid Committees of the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section.

get there. Many rental options when you travel are expensive and make the trip more stressful, if you bring your own wheelchair or scooter you can rest easy knowing that you are covered. Once you are ready to explore with your personal mobility device you can use the new feature on Google Maps that allows you to see where the accessible transit routes are and ensure that you will be able to get on and off at your destination. When searching for transit options on Google Maps simply enter your destination and get directions you may have to add a starting point at a local train station like the Sun Rail Station in DeBary and it will map out
By Scott Guimond a route with times and directions. Once you see the options link you can click on it and choose wheelchair accessible under routes. It will then give you the options and times you can depart. This feature is brand new and will become more powerful as it is improved over the next few months.

Lisa Jones, BC-HIS Helping People Hear Better for 20+ Years
Dear Lisa & Rick Thank you for the care you have been giving to my 95 year old mother. Your service and maintenance of her hearing aid was extremely comforting to me when I had to leave town. She recently had a stroke and was in a rehab facility when her hearing aid needed cleaning and you made sure she could hear by going to her rehab facility to take care of her. I will be forever grateful for your exceptional service and caring ways to your patients.

Hearing Health What is a Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation? INSIDE ADVISOR
Welcome to the first in a series of informational articles on Hearing Health. My name is Lisa Jones and I have been helping people hear better for over twenty years. My hope is that you find the information presented in this and future articles useful to you or your loved ones if you notice a decline in hearing or understanding ability. The first step is to start by getting a comprehensive hearing evaluation done by a Licensed Hearing Care Professional. A thorough hearing examination should be comprised of at least the following four basic components. 1. A hearing evaluation begins with a thorough Visual Inspection of your ear canals, best done with a video otoscope so you can see too. It is used to identify the extent of any physical abnormalities, obstructions
and or ear wax, in addition to assessing the general health of your ears. 2. An Air Conduction test is a procedure presenting a series of tones/frequencies you listen for through headphones and respond to by pushing a button. A person’s sensitivity level to each tone/frequency is recorded. 3. A Bone Conduction test is a series of tones you listen for through a bone oscillating headphone placed behind the ear or on your forehead. It helps determine whether your hearing loss should be referred to an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat Dr.) for treatment possibly by medication, surgery or if hearing aids/amplification would be beneficial. 4. A Speech Discrimination test/Speech Recognition is where you listen to and repeat a list of words through a set of headphones.
By Lisa Jones, BC-HIS
Hearing Healthcare Centers, LLC
These tests are used to evaluate your ability to understand speech at comfortable levels and at soft levels. The final product of this evaluation is an Audiogram. The audiogram is critically important in quantifying your hearing loss and in evaluating the best course of treatment for you. If hearing aids are appropriate, it also will serve as the basis for selecting the proper instrument for your loss and how your aids will be fitted to provide optimum results.

VITAS Healthcare
Give Them the Best Gift You Can Give Few subjects can be as unsettling as creating an endof-life (EOL) medical plan, also called an advance directive, that outlines the care you would want if you were too ill to speak for yourself. Monday, April 16, 2018 is National Healthcare Decision Day. A day to highlight this critically important subject, even if most folks are reluctant to broach it. If you neglect to create an EOL plan while you’re in good health and of sound mind, you risk leaving critical decisions about your medical care in the hands of loved ones and medical professionals.
What Does a VITAS Volunteer Do?
Anyone who has visited a seriously ill family member in the hospital knows that it can be a time of stress and difficult decisions. Any decisions you make now spare the people you love from additional pain— and spare you from medical procedures you don’t want, while keeping medical expenses in check. Among the issues an advance directive can tackle are: • The types of life-support treatments you would want, or not want, at the end of life • Whether you would want tubes inserted to provide nutrition and hydration
• The name of the person you authorize to make medical decisions on your behalf In honor of National Healthcare Decision Day, put your wishes in writing. Start by going to NHDD. org or HospiceCanHelp.com. VITAS Healthcare is the nation’s largest provider of hospice solutions. For more information, go to VITAS. com or contact us at 866-759-6695.
VITAS thanks the superlative VITAS volunteers who bring compassion to hospice patients and their families.

Vision Health
#1 of the Leading Causes of Blindness: Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye condition that is associated with increased iop pressure, which leads to optic nerve damage, ultimately resulting in permanent vision loss. Glaucoma is not curable, but it is treatable. It is a “silent disease” as there are little to no symptoms associated with it. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults and people with a family history. The signs and symptoms of glaucoma vary depending on the type and stage of the condition. The effect is so gradual that
you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage. Here are a few warning signs of the most common 2 of Glaucoma: Open-Angle Glaucoma • Patchy blind spots in your side or central vision • Tunnel vision usually occurs in the advance stages Acute angle-closure Glaucoma • Severe Headache • Eye pain • Nausea and vomiting • Halos around lights • Eye redness

Vision loss due to glaucoma cannot be recovered. So, it’s important to have regular eye exams, know your family’s eye health history, exercise with healthy eating, be compliant with treatments. If glaucoma is recognized early, vision loss can be slowed or prevented. If you have the condition, you’ll generally need treatment for the rest of your life. Newer laser and surgical treatments are now available offering lower risk and better outcomes.

Healing Chronic Wounds Using Amniotic Tissue
Amniotic membrane grafts have been shown effective in modulating wound healing in patients with chronic wounds. Not only are they incredibly cost effective and easy to obtain, but they also contain important factors needed for tissue repair. These grafts have unique anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fibrosis, and anti-scarring properties which make them ideal for treating chronic wounds. The combination of bioactive chemicals and materials within each graft promotes vascularization and formation of healthy granulation tissue by activating as well as supplementing the natural healing process. Cytokines encourage activation of the body’s repair process while growth factors stimulate stem cell division and tissue
growth. Nutrients, such as collagen, proteins and electrolytes supplement the reconstruction process by delivering additional scaffolding materials directly to the affected area. In June 2016, a randomized clinical trial was published by The International Journal of Women’s Health. Eleven patients with chronic leg ulcers were placed into a control group where conventional wound care methods were used while 14 patients were treated using amniotic membrane grafts. After 8 weeks of treatment researchers found no reduction of wound size for the patients within the control group. Astonishingly, all 14 wounds treated with amniotic tissue closed completely within a 1460-day period. These findings overwhelmingly showed the therapeutic

Some insurance companies have since begun offering coverage for regenerative treatments, paving the way for faster, cheaper, and more effective wound care methods. Planning on Traveling with your Oxygen Concentrator? Plan on traveling by air with an oxygen concentrator? There are some considerations you’ll want to make before your trip. Luckily, if you plan in advance, you can ensure that you’ll have a successful trip without delays.
Things to Consider Before Your Flight
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) doesn’t allow passengers to bring oxygen tanks or liquid oxygen on board, so if you require oxygen during a flight, you’ll have to use a portable oxygen concentrator.
There are three essential things to help you plan for a safe and stress-free flight:. 1. Physician Involvement • Your physician will play a significant role in your pre-flight preparation as many airlines required a physician’s statement expressing your requirement for oxygen use. 2. FAA Approval • Make sure the oxygen machine you are using is FAA approved for in-flight use.
• Be sure to double check with the airline itself for their individual rules and regulations regarding oxygen. 3. Battery Requirements • Make sure you have enough battery power! Never rely on aircraft electrical power to solely charge your device. Airlines and the FAA require you to bring sufficient batteries to power your device for at least 150% of the expected flight duration.

Let's Talk About Retirement Living
Leaving worries behind: Social opportunities in retirement communities Spring has sprung! Will this be the year you will be “springing” out of your home into a new place? Perhaps you’re considering retirement communities and downsizing the responsibilities of home ownership. There are several reasons why millions of seniors move into retirement housing in their golden years. What is holding you back? Do you worry about social ties, community connections and staying active? Worries are common. But, are they based in reality? One of the concerns seniors have about moving into a retirement community is the effect on their social lives. If you’ve lived in your home for number of years, you can come and go as you please and entertain and have people over for visits. Would these change if you moved in a retirement community? Let’s look at what the research tells us:
1. Quality of life can improve in a retirement community. A 2017 study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health concluded that quality of life for the elderly can improve in retirement communities. Specifically, activities that involve art, sport and leisure can make a measurable difference. 2. You’re more likely to make new friends in a retirement community. A study published in the Journal of Housing for the Elderly in 2004 reported evidence that moving into a retirement community increases the likelihood of receiving social support and making new friends. 3. Continuing your social activities in retirement is important. Here’s an additional piece of data to consider: It’s in your best interest to continue to be social into your retirement years. A 2016 study published

by Science Daily shows that membership in social groups like book clubs or church groups after retirement has a direct, positive impact on health and well-being. In fact, it’s as beneficial as regular exercise. If you’re not swayed by this research, conduct your own. Talk to friends who have moved into retirement communities. Interview activity directors of the communities you’re considering. Talk to residents of the communities you are interested in and get their opinions. Transitioning to a retirement community does not need to be a sad venture. A little of your own research may show you it’s time to spring into a retirement community sooner than you thought. Implant Supported Dentures - What Are Your Options?
By Dr. John A. Whitsitt, D.D.S., F.A.C.P. Implant supported dentures can be very confusing because of the wide variety of options available. For a mouth missing all or nearly all of your teeth there exists four major implant supported options.
Loose Fitting Dentures?
enjoy all your favorite foods again • Fixed full-arch implant supported bridges consist of 4-8 implants and a fixed dental bridge(s). This option gives you the best result you could ever possibly have, providing you with enough implants to replace all or most of your teeth. • Implant supported dentures consist of a denture that attaches to four implants and is a very good option because they are fixed, meaning they stay in at all times. • Implant supported overdenture consists of 4 or more dental implants and a removable prosthesis that attaches to the dental implants. There may be a metal bar to support the denture. • Implant retained overdenture consists of 2 or more implants and a removable appliance. This is one step up from a denture, but is more like a traditional denture. These provide more support but you will get some sore spots. Occasional relining of the denture is common because it relies on your existing tissue and bone for support which changes over time. It’s better than a denture but is not as stable as any of other options.
Give us a call, we can set you up with a complimentary examination and discuss your options. A hybrid over-denture Þxed on dental implants can completely restore natural function and appearance for individuals who have lost or are about to lose all of their natural teeth on an upper or lower arch. This means you’ll be able to fully taste and enjoy all your favorite foods again.

Mail Call: Ask 'ol Sarge' While the Veterans Administration (VA) recently has made great strides in the delivery of healthcare and monetary benefits, there are still a few mysteries that perplex the best of us. So, each month we consult our trusted resources to bring you answers to the most vexing VA questions. Send us your questions at customerservice@agingtree.com or call and you could be featured in Ask Sarge as well as and those selected will get a free jar gripper from Aging Tree.
Q: Right now I live in an assisted living facility and use my Aid & Attendance. If I move out, will I still be eligible for that benefit? Roger B., DeLand A: In your case, if you move,
AND if you incur a similar cost of care at your new residence, it is very likely that you will be eligible to receive a similar award. For example, if you move in with relatives but still pay about as much
for a home health aide to care for you there, then the amount you receive from VA shouldn’t vary much. The same would apply if you moved into a similarly priced ALF. In any case, it is interesting to note that relatives may qualify as caregivers. It is also important to remember that VA pension benefit payments are based on one’s income and unreimbursed medical expenses, so you should tell VA immediately if any income or medical expenses change.

Seek the assistance of a veteran service officer to accurately report these changes.
Q: I am about to file my taxes, do I have to report my income from VA? Iris – DeBary A: All VA disability benefits are

tax free payments. If you are required to file a tax return, disability benefits received from the VA should not be included in your gross income. Some of the payments which are considered disability benefits include: • Disability compensation and pension payments for disabilities paid either to Veterans or their families, • Grants for homes designed for wheelchair living, • Grants for motor vehicles for Veterans who lost their sight or the use of their limbs, or • Benefits under a dependent-care assistance program. If you use a tax preparer, tell them about all of your income sources, but just be aware that VA disability payments are not treated as taxable income.

The Facts
1. Social Security benefits are paid in the month following the month for which they are due. When you meet all the requirements for eligibility, the benefit check you receive is payment for the prior month’s benefits. For information on the payment of benefits, you can read our pamphlet, What You Need to Know When You Get Retirement or Survivors Benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/EN-05-10077.pdf. To know when checks will be paid, you can save the Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments to your “Favorites” or print it by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov/ pubs/calendar.htm. 2. We don’t pay benefits for the month of death. Social Security uses the same throughout-the-month rule to determine eligibility for the benefit that is due for the month of death. You must live through the full month to be eligible for the payment. See the pamphlet above in the section titled If a beneficiary dies at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/EN-05-10077.pdf for more information about when a check is due. 3. Survivors benefits can replace a percentage of the worker’s earnings for family members. The eligible family members of a retired or disabled beneficiary may receive a monthly payment of up to 50 percent of beneficiary’s amount. Survivors benefits usually range from about 75 percent to 100 percent of the deceased worker’s amount. Visit our Understanding the Benefits publication for an explanation of the amounts family members receive at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/ EN-05-10024.pdf. 4. Work credits determine eligibility for benefits, but your lifetime earnings are used to calculate your monthly benefit amount. Retired workers need 40 work credits to be eligible for benefits, but your work credits alone do not determine how much you will receive each month. When we figure your retirement benefit, we use the average of your highest 35 years of earnings. See Your Retirement Benefit: How It Is Figured at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/EN-0510070.pdf. 5. If you receive retirement benefits before you reach age 65, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) helps pay for inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility following a hospital stay. It also pays for some home health care and hospice care. Medicare Part B (medical insurance) helps pay for services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventative services. When you’re already receiving retirement benefits, we automatically sign you up for Medicare Parts A and B when you turn age 65. You can then decline Part B if you choose, since it requires a monthly premium. If you are not receiving retirement benefits as you approach age 65, you should contact Social Security three months before age 65 to sign up for Medicare Part A and B. Even if you don’t want to retire at 65, you should sign up for Medicare only. For more details, check out our Medicare page at www.socialsecurity.gov/medicare.
