Spreading Holiday Cheer by Involving our Matriarchs.
Ask Savvy S ue his month let’s spread some holiday cheer by involving our matriarchs in our holiday festivities. The holidays are a time of family and spirit. Holiday traditions vary from family to family but one thing remains constant; that’s the gift of spirit. In my family we always look to include everyone we can in our family activities and our parents are no exception. We are fortunate enough to have our matriarch we all call “Granny”. The old saying goes; the older we get the more we appreciate things. It seems as though the wonderful seniors we have the great honor to have part of our lives cherish the holidays and just spending time with fam-

ily. Sometimes just watching the activities. Simple things can provide comfort and give a feeling of connections with your family and current events and times. These are some of the things I do to bring joy to my family during the holidays. • Holiday decorating: We use Granny’s Christmas tree and decorations for our home. We play Christmas music and decorate the tree together using her ornaments. She
is happy to share where each orna-
ment came from and enjoys the activity and sharing her memories. We are fortunate to have more than one room to decorate, so I can still use some of my own decorations in a different room. We are both fond of flowers, so I also buy
fresh flowers or Christmas plants. Flower arrangements are also an activity that we share and enjoy. Another activity I might suggest this year is making some Christmas crafts. Some of my friends have shared that their elders enjoy this type of activity very much. • Holiday Foods: Baking Christmas cooking is especially enjoyable when Granny and her great-grandkids participate. We all enjoy the decorating and the eating of these treats! We also make enough so that we can share
them with some other seniors. Preparation of favorite holiday desserts and dishes is also a family affair. It was fun watching my husband and his mother prepare a family recipe for pimento cheese. Even if Granny can’t stand long enough to complete the cooking—she is happy supervising.
ily. This seems to provide a much needed boost both spiritually and emotionally for us all! I strongly encourage you to ask your matriarchs to participate in similar activities in your chosen religion! I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your matriarchs Happy Holidays!
• Holiday Parades: Last year we took Granny and some of her friends to a local Christmas parade. It takes a little effort to make sure she doesn’t have to walk too far on her walker and that she has a folding chair— but, the smile it brought to her face made it worth the effort.
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your matriarchs Happy Holidays!
• Holiday Lights: This is a traditional evening affair started by a nice dinner out. This is followed by driving around our town and enjoying the holiday lights and decorations. • Holiday Entertainment: Taking everyone with you to holiday concerts and performances is also a great way to share your love. Granny still talks about the time we went to see the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. • Holiday Shopping: The idea of fighting the crowds during the holiday shopping season can be overwhelming and stressful for seniors with limited mobility. I try to assist Granny with her shopping by showing her items on my computer and then either ordering them on-line or picking them up for her at the store. • Attending Christmas Eve Service: Even though Granny is no longer physically able to attend weekly church services, I greatly encourage her to attend our Christmas Eve Service with our fam-

Family at Distance for the Holidays? No Worries we have you Covered h, there’s no place like home for the holidays
O
Cause no matter how far away you roam If you want to be happy in a million ways For the holidays, you cant beat home, sweet home Perry Como made this holiday classic famous in 1954, and it has been a Christmas standard since; being remade by other artists of note including: The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, Randy Travis, Norah Jones & Cyndi Lauper. Is it really the home that brings the smiles and warm feelings? No, it is the people, or the memories of people that you will find there; and specifically your family. Family is what brings pleasure, and makes you happy in a million ways. Spending time with family is what motivates us to brave adverse weather, lose sleep and travel long distances on the holidays. Previously, I mentioned that the holidays and other days of celebration can be a sad time for those who have lost loved ones. All the fanfare of the holidays only reminds them of their loss. Others being happy and enjoying themselves on these occasions can actually make them depressed and even angry. There are many reasons why being away from family occurs on the holidays. Whether it is
because we can’t afford to go home, or we have no “home” to travel to. Sometimes we just find ourselves alone for the holidays. Sometimes it is by choice, a n d other times it is not. Here are a few suggestions that may make this holiday season a little more enjoyable (or at least doable) if you find yourself apart from family.
1. Plan Self Care
When we are not able to be with family on the holiday, we need to find ways to nurture ourselves because we are missing out on the “feel good” that we would usually get from our loved ones. This planned self care could be a massage or spa day, eating out at your favorite restaurant, or an outing to a park, beach or museum - any place that gives you joy. This can be done solo, or with a group.
2. Second Family
Growing up my brothers and I had people in our lives who we called “uncle” and “aunt”, who were not blood related. I think most of us have had people like this, who are not family, and yet they are family. Being around them brings joy and good feelings. Some people find there
“second family” at church, synagogue, or temple. If you do not have a second f a m i l y, maybe it is time to start one. There may be others who are not able to be with family this holiday season. C a l l them u p . Plan a p o t luck and s o m e simple activit i e s together. Y o u will be glad y o u d i d , and so will they.
3. The Best Thing
Next
If you can’t be with family or loved ones during this time of year, then send them letters or emails or call them or video chat. A few years ago, me, my brothers and parents were not able to be together for Christmas, and I arranged it so we could all be on Skype and have a video conference call. It wasn’t the same as being there, but it was so nice to hear their voices and see their smiling faces. Some of us have lost loved ones, so we can not call them or send them emails, yet we can honor their memory. Pull out photo albums and read old letters and watch old home videos. This
By Loren Fish, LCSW may be bittersweet, yet I am betting that though there may be tears in your eyes and a tug on your heart, there will also be a smile on your face. Sometimes in trying to avoid the hurting, we also keep ourselves from remembering past joys.
4. Travel
A change of scenery can be just what the “doctor” ordered: a snowy cabin, or a sandy beach cottage could put some cheer back in your holiday. Some may not be able to travel, yet if you have the finances and time, this can be a great option, whether by yourself, with some friends, or with a tour group. And if taking a vacation doesn’t sound “good will” enough for you, I have some friends who go on a mission trip over the holidays every year, thus combining a get away with the Christmas spirit of giving.
5. Volunteering
There are a hundred and one opportunities to volunteer around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Serving meals at a soup kitchen, shelter, church or community center is usually just a phone call away. If the food thing is not your thing, than ask local a nursing home if there are residents without fam-

ily and visit them and take them some holiday cheer. My mom did this with me and my brother when we were younger and it left a lasting impression. And lastly, if you are trying to avoid people, you could volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue. Helping options are limitless. Think big. Whether you are able to spend the holidays with family and friends or not, “family” will always be a part of holidays; and experiences on the holidays are always better shared. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
8
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
9
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
10
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
11
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
13
heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
14
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
15
And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Holiday Recipe
Mashed Turnip and Potatoes This recipe is a nice change from the traditional holiday mashed potatoes. Of course you don’t have to wait for the holidays. It may become a year-round favorite. (And for those picky family members who don’t want to try turnips, they’ll never know you added them.)
INGREDIENTS: 1 large or 2 medium turnips, peeled and cubed 3 large white potatoes (such as Idaho or Yukon Gold), peeled and cubed 1/2 cup milk 3 tablespoons butter, divided 1 teaspoon sugar (optional) 1/2 cup Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese, divided (optional) Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Butter 8” x 8” baking dish. In a large pot, cover turnip and potatoes with cold water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium and cook 20 to 25 minutes until tender. Drain well. Return turnip and potatoes to pot. Add milk, 2 tablespoons butter, sugar, 1/4 cup cheese (if desired) and salt and pepper to taste. Whip the potatoes and turnip well with electric mixer but don’t over beat; lumps are okay. Spoon into prepared dish. Dot remaining 1 tablespoon butter over top. Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup cheese over top, if desired. Bake uncovered until hot and top is golden, about 25 to 30 minutes. Enjoy! VARIATIONS: -Substitute half-n-half or heavy cream for the milk. This will provide a richer flavor. -Substitute 1 teaspoon brown sugar for the sugar. -Feel free to add whatever you like on top as a garnish such as crumbled crisp bacon. -Nutritional facts for a turnip: calories - 34; potassium 233mg.; fiber 2.2g.; sugar 4.6g.; calcium 3%; vitamin C 42%; iron 2%; vitamin B-6 5%; magnesium 3%

Most people gravitate towards the guaranteed insurance contract called the index annuity. Why? 1. 2. 3. 4.
When the stock market goes up, you go up with it. Your gains lock in on an annual basis. When the stock market goes down, you don’t lose anything. You do receive compound interest.
