n an instant her future changed. “I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what my options are. I don’t want to be in a nursing home and I don’t even know how to begin the conversation with my family about senior care or what help I need.”

These are the words of Mary, who came to see me a few weeks ago. Mary was afraid of what was ahead. It was all she could do to muster up the courage to even call Aging Tree. She was afraid of what the answers might be. In the words of a great columnist, “It’s sometimes hard to pick up the 100-pound phone.”

Most of us are more afraid of losing our independence than anything else. For an elder in retirement age, this can be a daunting thought. Take a moment, close your eyes and ask yourself, are you proactive or reactive? Most humans tend to be reactive - especially when it comes to planning for senior services or worse yet, having to make a quick decision about senior care, the costs involved and keeping one’s independence. In the spirit of Independence Day, this edition of Aging Tree Illustrated focuses on your independence and things you can do to be protect it. Many options exist to help folks maintain their independence. One of the driving forces behind the creation of our services was that we help people find the best solutions quickly, while maintaining their independence at home or in a beautiful assisted living community. Regrettably, many families get the information they are looking for, but delay decisions, which sometimes causes more complications. When counseling, I often tell people they have two paths: You will take the information and make decisions with it - reducing the risk of any further complications - or you won’t. Being proactive in these situations is the best thing you can do. Control what you can. If you have more control over your independence, you’ll ultimately change your future. You may remember the first article we did on Olek, a 70-year-old inspiration who crossed the Atlantic in a kayak a few years ago. We wanted to revisit his thoughts and journeys in this Independence Day edition. Olek is the epitome of facing your fears to control your fears. See page 8 for our follow-up story. In this edition, all of our wonderful writers have created articles that will help you maintain your independence and provide tools to assist you in being proactive. I encourage you to read each one and use the information to help you and your family make better decisions about your future. May you enjoy your Independence Day and may your independence last forever. Change your future, and should you find yourself needing senior care services or just a little extra help, pick up that 100-pound phone and discover all that Aging Tree is. There are no wrong questions. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

oung and old could learn a lot from 70-year-old Aleksander Doba (or “Olek,” as he’s called -a Polish name meaning Aleksander). He’s the Polish kayaker known around the globe for his adventurous spirit and several successful attempts to cross the world’s largest oceans in an open-water kayak. What could we learn from this man, you ask? How to continue during trials, how to follow our passions, how to get back up when we fall, and probably…how to kayak, too! This May, Olek embarked once again on a quest to complete another transatlantic kayaking excursion. He took off from Liberty Landing Marina, New York, for what was scheduled to be a trip in his kayak from New York to Lisbon, Portugal. He left cheering crowds behind as he paddled by the Statue of Liberty and through Verrezanno-Nerrows Bridge – the gateway to the Atlantic. Onlookers and writers described Olek as 2 overcome with emotion as he departed on May 29. This third transatlantic expedition came with several obstacles even before his kayak, “OLO,” was brought from its mooring along the Hudson River to the launch site. United States Customs had an issue with one of Olek’s freeze-dried foods, then OLO’s battery discharged, and its electrical system was malfunctioning. Amazingly, all of these issues were resolved or repaired before that Sunday morning in New York.

Watching Tropical Storm Bonnie approach the East Coast, the launch was further delayed as Olek wisely waited for the storm to pass. He’d wait to enter the open ocean that Tuesday. But no sooner had he entered the Atlantic than he’d begun getting pummeled by waves that overturned his vessel, and sent him falling into the water. Three days later, off the coast of New Jersey, Olek called upon his colleagues to collect him from Sandy Hook Park. The excursion was over. But, as you’d expect from an explorer like Olek, he’s already planning his next expedition in 2017 to celebrate his 71st birthday. ***

“Learn not to be afraid, turn dreams into plans, and bring plans to reality.”

When you read this summary of Aleksander Doba’s most recent attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a kayak, do you see it as a success or failure? Why? Prior to this most recent attempt, Olek had successfully crossed the Atlantic twice – once in 2010 and once in 2013. In 2014 and 2015, the Poland native was named National Geographic’s “Adventurer of the Year.” Why does Olek create these challenges in his life? Why at the age of 70? “The First Transatlantic Kayak Expedition was to check myself and my kayak. The second trip was to ‘raise the bar,’” Olek told National Geographic’s Jan Altschul. “I have two sons and two granddaughters. I hope they will learn not to be afraid to dream, turn dreams into plans, and bring plans to reality. Then there is [the] satisfaction of great achievements.”

“If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you.”

If, like Olek, you are 70 years old (or so), you can still create a vibrant, interesting, challenging life for yourself – the kind of life that helps you continue your independence, enhance your creativity, and help you feel more alive than you ever have before. There are many ideas in the world on how to “improve” life, and one of them is to challenge yourself. You don’t necessarily need to hop in a kayak and paddle the Atlantic, but here are some ideas you can put to use right away, courtesy of Lifehack.org: Learn a new language. Whether you take a class, an online course or simply download an app on your smartphone, learning a new language can help you meet new people and may encourage you to travel more. In many ways, language is the gateway to new experiences, new places, and new friendships. Figure out what you’re scared of – and do it for one week consistently. Are you scared of social media? Are you hesitant to talk to people you don’t know…even at church or in a small social setting? Try it… you will get the hang of it eventually, and chances are, the next time won’t be as scary. Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to pursue. Look for a class offered by your local library, arts and craft studio or store, or local club. Once you start looking around, you’ll likely be amazed at what’s out there! Facebook alone lists hundreds of events right in your neighborhood or community, too. Learn to sew, paint, cook a new meal…the opportunities are endless! Dedicate at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise. A walk around your neighborhood, a swim at the pool…there are countless ways to incorporate activity into your day. Sure, you may lose some weight or firm up a muscle here and there, but for no other reason, exercise for the happy-causing endorphins! And, you won’t be surprised to learn the National Institute on Aging says exercise

and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. There are four main types and each type is different. Doing them all will give you more benefits. • Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Brisk walking or jogging, dancing, swimming, and biking are examples. • Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. Lifting weights or using a resistance band can build strength. • Balance exercises help prevent falls. • Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber. Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people. Find some cost-effective ways to get out and about and explore, even if you stay in your own neighborhood. Connect with new people and ask them questions about how they do what they do. That museum you always drive by, but never enter…make a visit. That park you always walk by but never visit…pack a lunch, bring your dog, and enjoy some new scenery.

“Reveal yourself by challenging yourself”

Marcus Ingelmo, a writer with SelfGrowth.com, an online self-improvement community, says that when we challenge ourselves, we benefit in countless ways. “When you challenge yourself you go beyond who you think you are, and it reveals who you can be,” he writes. “In fact, it’s an amazing concept because anyone can do it, and when you do it, you will benefit from it. There’s such power in challenging yourself; you are so much more than you currently think you are.”

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”

Patrick B. McGrath, Ph.D. of Psychology Today says he consistently works to inspire his patients to do one thing every day that scares them. The goal, says Dr. McGrath, is not for him to talk them out of feeling anxious, but rather for the patient to behave themselves out of feeling anxious. “Many people think that there are mag-

ic words or magic pills that can be said or given to just change the way they feel. This just does not happen,” says Dr. McGrath. “In order to really change the way you feel, you need to change how you behave.” “For example, I will probably not be able to just talk you out of an elevator phobia,” he adds. “It will not be until you actually get on an elevator that you are able to truly see that you can overcome your fear.

You may be able to tell people that you are not afraid of elevators, and even convince yourself of that fact, but until you actually get on the elevator and face your fear of it, your words do not mean much.”

Taking Control of Your Independence Pick Up the Phone and Take Charge LIVING WELL BRANCH

I am very much aware of my limitations and the things I cannot do and I am also aware of the things that I CAN do.” Connie, 88 year old aunt “If you don’t know where you are going any road will take you there” I was grateful to spend time with our son and daughter recently and excited to hear about their summer plans. Both will be traveling and our son will be studying abroad. It was amazing to hear about the assignments he and his girlfriend will complete and the mileposts they will visit along the way. They have researched each potential location and contacted former travelers to make their selections and optimally prepare for the upcoming adventure. Travel requires a certain comfort with the unknown. Realizing there will be factors outside their control they are committed to successfully managing the ones they can, so that they can fully enjoy the journey avoiding confusion about what to do next. Regardless of age, we are all travelers on this journey called life with numerous paths to choose and many mileposts to navigate along the way. While there is great adventure there is also great loss that occurs at every age and stage. Physical and mental losses often present the most challenge, particularly as we advance in years. These can include vision problems, less control over emotions, less physical energy and stamina, less flexibility and ability to move easily, hearing and memory problems. What if we could take charge of the factors we can control? What if we could prepare ahead of time for the mileposts along the way?

“If you don’t know where you are going any road will take you there” is a phrase that applies to every age and stage of life. We have more opportunity to choose than we often realize. As we advance in years we could choose a road paved with fear, anger, guilt and confusion about this new vulnerability. These overwhelming feelings could cause expectations that friends and family

will always be available, especially if comfortable with assistance and having people do things for us. Those who are most comfortable caring for others, who prefer to manage without help, may find accepting assistance from others a real challenge. A road paved with anger about the new normal could show up as frustration and anger toward loved ones. Difficulty accepting the help that is offered or feeling like a burden might cause feelings of guilt. Confusion about what to do next while longing for the “good old days” is a well-traveled path. Here is the great news: These choices all present an opportunity to take charge. Recognizing your feelings, practicing self-acceptance and being patient are ways to cope with changing independence. Pursuing new experiences and staying connected enables you to maintain and nurture new relation-

Consider the following questions: Is my quality of life diminishing? Is my level of frustration becoming harder to manage? Are the people I trust telling me to seek help? I recently spoke with Corey Shenk, editor of this magazine and visionary owner of Aging Tree for his insights on the concept of loss of independence. He noted this was the number one concern for the community he serves and added that seniors are often more afraid of losing their independence than losing their spouse or dying. ing by this comment, “I need to talk with someone but I don’t know how”. What if there was a travel agent for this part of the journey, a tour guide for the experience? What if you could travel from one changing milepost to the next with a road map for success? Being brave enough to start a conversation that matters is a recurrent theme in this Living Well Branch and starts with the simple question Corey asks those seeking help, “Tell me about what is going on in your home?” The mindset change from one of loss toward a proactive approach is extremely powerful and highly effective yet he notes 95% are in reactive mode, which means that something has occurred and they don’t know what to do. Typically, it is the daughter who will make the call and there is a real time sensitive need to “reroute” to prevent another event from happening. Have you ever asked for directions as you were trying to find your way in unfamiliar territory, then decided not to heed counsel? Sounds unlikely, yet often happens based on the thought that independence will be compromised. Heeding counsel and accepting help need not threaten independence. Instead it can pave the way to fewer emergencies and a more joy filled journey. I asked my extremely independent 90-year-old dad his take on the

concept of independence and he simply answered “common sense”. His sister at the age of 88 shared, “I am very much aware of the things I can no longer do and also aware of the things I can do. With the evolution of the smartphone and tablets, there’s an application, or app, for just about everything. Need a restaurant? There’s an app for that. Need to refill prescriptions? There’s an app for that. Need to find a bus stop or a bus route? With Votran’s new MyStop Mobile app, there’s an app for that too! MyStop Mobile puts information about bus stop locations, arrivals and departures, and bus routes in the palm of your hand. For iPhones and other Apple-based products, MyStop Mobile can be accessed from the iTunes Store. Owners of non-Apple devices that operate with the Android operating system can download the app from the Google Play Store. Both versions can be downloaded without charge. Votran’s MyStop Mobile app shows riders maps of all Votran routes, stop locations, and where the buses are in real time. With this app riders can do most things that can be done on the full version of the Votran app. Need to know where the nearest Votran stop is to you? MyStop Mobile can assist you by showing you where you are and how far it is to the nearest stop. You can zoom in on the app’s maps for a closer look at street names. Votran’s base maps also show points of interest so riders can orient themselves and locate the nearest stop. MyStop Mobile also lets riders plan their trips. Votran’s Trip Planner, in conjunction with Google Transit, can be accessed through the app. Riders can set up alerts regarding Votran service through the app. They can also make a reminder of bus arrival times at the stops they frequent most often. If the streamlined appearance of the app is not adequate, riders can go to the full Votran website. As Votran is continually making strides to provide and improve rider services, the Feedback option gives riders the opportunity to make comments regarding the app. As you can see, Votran’s MyStop Mobile app puts convenience into the palm of your hand. Give Votran a try If you have questions or would like to learn more about planning a trip with Votran, please call one of the numbers provided below. You also may use the interactive trip planner on Votran. org or email questions to VotranCustomerService@volusia.org. The Votran Customer Service Center is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Travel training is available upon request.

Independence = Happiness:

How an Elder Care Attorney Helps You Maintain Independence? As we age some physically regress to the functionality of a young child. We become more dependent on our loved ones. Usually the loved one accepts the role, however, they don’t relish it. Becoming dependent on others is a strike against dignity and pride. How do we maintain our independence in the face of these health issues? One way is to plan so that we can use public benefits that are available to us. After all, our tax dollars have supported these programs for decades, why shouldn’t we avail ourselves of the benefits. Did you know that there are government programs that will pay for some or all of your care at home, in an assisted living residence, or skilled nursing community? You probably answered yes, but believe

By Scott A. Selis, Esq.

that you have too much money to qualify for the benefit, but you’re probably mistaken. People that plan in advance frequently are able to protect 100% or their life’s savings. Those that wait for a crisis can also protect a portion of their life’s savings, but not as much. So, how does that help you maintain independence? Imagine that you have $200,000, a house, and a car. Now imagine that you need some care at home, which is currently being provided by your daughter after she gets off of work. During the day, you’re using caregivers for 30 hours per week, which ends up costing you about $2,600 per month. What if you used government benefits to pay for ½ of that? That would save you

more than $15,000 per year (if everything else stayed the same), you might be able to use that money to pay for some or all of the care that your daughter is now providing after work. Thus ensuring that she can get the rest you’d like her to get. Also you may be able to pay your daughter, if properly documented, and still get the government benefits. As a result of using an Elder Care Attorney, you have more choices, which equates to independence, which usually equals happiness. So, avoid poverty, and start your planning now. Scott Selis is a lawyer at Chiumento Selis Dwyer in DeLand, Ormond, and Palm Coast. Scott’s a member of the Task Force for the Elderly and is Administrative Committee Chair for the Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section. He recently received the Elder Law Attorney of the Year Award. INSIDE ADVISOR July is Group B Strep Awareness Month

Group B streptococcal (GBS) disease in adults is increasing, particularly in elderly persons and those with significant underlying diseases. It is a common bacterium often carried in your intestines or lower genital tract and is usually harmless in adults. Although only 25 in 100,000 adults will contract the illness, special attention is now being given for awareness because the disease can be fatal to the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.

Although Group B strep bacteria are common in the gastrointestinal tract of men and women, it may be a source of some infection. According to the CDC, The most common problems caused by group B strep bacteria in adults

are bloodstream infections, pneumonia, skin and soft-tissue infections, and bone and joint infections. Some symptoms include fever, chills, cough, chest pain, difficulty breathing, skin infections, and can sometimes cause urinary tract infections. If doctors suspect invasive group B strep infection, they will take a sample of blood or spinal fluid. The samples are then cultured, which can take a few days. Group B strep disease is usually treated with penicillin or other common antibiotics. Most cases of group B strep disease in adults are among those who have other medical conditions that put them at increased risk, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure, history of cancer, or obesity. Although it’s not available yet, researchers are working on a group B strep vaccine that could, in the future, help prevent

By Kim Denoff group B strep infections among adults. July became an awareness month for the disease to educate patients because early diagnosis can eliminate possible serious complications in the aging population. Please see your doctor if you experience symptoms. Be HEALTH WISE in 2016. Kim Denoff, Owner of Advanced Imaging and Administrator for Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Orange City. Keep your Independence Can My Computer Help Maintain My Independence? COMPUTER TRAINING BRANCH

A

resounding YES to that question! Let’s look at just how many ways this can happen; If you are using Windows 10, you have at your fingertips your own Personal Assistant. Her name is Cortana. Like Apple’s Siri, you can ask her questions and receive answers. You can schedule appointments and she will remind you of that appointment. If you have set up a Microsoft Account, Cortana will always know your location, so if you ask her something like, “Where is a good Chinese restaurant?” As she knows your location, she will show you a map of where (and how far they are) from you. You can set her to remind you to take your medications as well. What is really neat about Cortana is that she can work together with your Windows Phone (it must be a Windows phone and not an iPhone). She can work with an Android but works better with Windows phones. This way you can schedule reminders not only on your PC but also on your phone! Windows 10 also has many applications that will be accessible to you through Windows Key. When this key is pressed you will see the Windows 10 Start Menu. What we are interested in is the Settings entry. Once you click the settings entry, you will be taken to the Settings Screen.

Once Settings is clicked we are taken to the Ease of Access Section This section contains tools that are designed to aide you in common computer functions. Once opened, you will see the following items to choose from. Here they are and a brief explanation of what they can do for you: The Narrator - In this section, you’ll find several options for having text and controls

read aloud to you. Once you turn Narrator on, you can choose a voice (David, Zira or Mark) and adjust your narrator’s speed and pitch. You can also pick which types of sounds you want to hear (e.g., characters you type versus words you type). In the Magnifier section, you will find options for magnifying your screen -- turn Magnifier on, and a floating toolbar will pop-up. From this toolbar, you can magnify or reduce your screen and choose what type of magnification view you want to see (full screen, lens, docked).

High-contrast themes can make it easier for people with visual impairments to see different items on the screen. In the high contrast section, you can pick and tweak a high contrast theme -- choose a theme from the drop-down menu and you’ll see the theme previewed in the box below. Here, you can tweak the theme by changing the colors of each component before you hit Apply to apply the theme to your PC. The Closed captions section is a handy section that lets you adjust how closed captions appear in Windows apps such as in

the Xbox Videos app. You can change the color, transparency, style, size, background color, background transparency, window color, and window transparency of your captions. This won’t change how closed captions appear in online streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu. The Keyboard and Mouse sections are exactly the same as what you’ll find in the Windows 8 PC settings menu. In the Keyboard section, you can toggle the on-screen keyboard on and off, and you can turn on useful features such as Sticky Keys and Toggle Keys (sounds a tone when you press Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock). You can adjust cursor thickness, in case the cursor is too slim for you to see properly, and you can turn on visual notifications for sound. Long Term Care Insurance

By Paulette Reed

Is It Really Needed?

Why do people purchase LTCi (Long Term Care insurance)? There are three primary reasons: 1. For their family. Over half of the people purchased because they had been a caregiver for someone with a chronic illness or disability. This experience left them determined not to let that happen to their family. There’s no doubt most children will step up to help their parents when the time comes. An LTCi policy provided the funds to hire professional services so the kids don’t have to take the full responsibility of caregiving. LTCi sim-

ply allows them to keep the promise they made to care for their parents by hiring professions to be there when they can’t. 2. Want to stay at home. An LTCi would give them the option to receive care at home and maintain their independence and personal dignity. Help them to avoid a nursing home. An LTCi give them assistance with the activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, homemaker services such as grocery shopping, meal preparation and housekeeping, and the professional services of a registered nurse, home health aide or therapist.

simply can’t afford to pay for these services out of their pockets. An LTCi was purchased to protect the assets they’d worked a lifetime to accumulate. The average cost of nursing home care is quickly approaching $80,000 a year. And that’s just for one person. If both partners needed care, your assets could be quickly depleted. As we know, the cost continues to rise. What do you think the cost will be 10, 15 or 20 years down the road when you are likely need care?

For a free consultation call Paulette Reed at ASB Financial 386-547-5483. Paulette Reed is a licensed and certified insurance agent and enjoys serving the senior community helping them to have the best health coverage and protection for their family.

3. Protect their nest egg. Long term care services are expensive. Most people

Growing Accidental Friends

F

arming is about more than just food. One of the truths we have discovered about farming is that it is about much more than just the food we raise. When we purchased the farm and moved out of the subdivision we had lived in for so many years one of the things I was concerned with was the isola-

tion we might experience. Like so many Americans today we were already living a fairly isolated life with people living just a couple dozen feet away. What would it be like with the nearest neighbor a half mile

or more away? Little did we realize that the farm would answer that concern. Over the years I have come to realize that at Common Ground Farm we offer more than just great food. We offer something just as valuable, a sense of connection. People come not just for the vegetables, they come because of a community of people that has developed around the farm. These people share a common interest and it has served to draw them together closer then we or even they probably imagined. T o d a y people come home from work and pull into their garage as the garage door closes it behind. Then we sit in our air conditioned homes rather than on our empty front porches. What passes for meeting your neighbor now a day is a polite but disinterested wave as you drive by. As a result

by John Joslin people find themselves feeling lonely and disconnected, especially in difficult times. We have found people are yearning for connection whether they realize it or not. And that is one of the unexpected benefits we and many of our members have experienced through the farm. On the farm it is not uncommon to find our members hanging around after picking up their produce and chatting with another member or with Pat or me. Some come to help in the store or field just to spend time with us while doing something they like. Over the years we have been blessed with many deepening friendships, the kind you can count on it difficult times. For example, recently we began to experience problems with our refrigerated trailer we use to store the produce until it is picked up. Not knowing much about diesel engines or a refrigerated cooling I am limited in what I can do. One day the unit went down at 5pm with thousands of dollars’ worth of food in it. No mechanic was to be had until the next day. You talk about a stressful situation. Fortunately we have friends that know almost everybody around. We called them and within 30 minutes we had access to an empty cooler. They even came out at ten o’clock at night to show us where the person lived and helped us transfer all the food to the cooler. Before moving to the farm we had very few people we could turn to like this. If you don’t have friends like this you do not realize the blessing you are missing in your life. Of course to have a friend like that you also have to be one like that. This summer would be a great time to start forging new friendships. Why not start spending some time with someone and get to know them. You might be surprised at the outcome. This is an excellent opportunity to make today a good day to have a good day not just for you but for someone else. (Thank you Tony and Lisa Buckner for all your support and to Don Birdwell for the use of the cooler.) For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. Taylor Rd, DeLand, FL 32724 or e-mail any questions to strongroots.agingtree@gmail.com

Keeping the mind sharp and alert is very important in being able to remain independent. Fortunately, there are safe and effective nutritional supplements available to help us stay in control and on our own for as long as possible. Staying healthy and independent involves both the mind and the body; both need to be fully functioning to be at our utmost level of productivity and enjoyment. To help the mind stay healthy and the memory sharp, the herb Bacopa has shown to be very effective in the health and regeneration of the brain. There have been numerous scientific studies conducted on the efficacy of this herb. Bacopa has a long history in Ayeurvedic Medicine dating back thousands of years. Another healthy mind supplement is Prevegen, the extract of a certain jelly fish.
