Speaking of baseball, let’s talk Yogi Berra for a moment. This baseball legend played for the Yankees nearly every season of his 19-year career. He worked his way through positions on the field to become a coach and manager, and ultimately appeared in 21 World Series games! Yogi once said, “If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else.” I wonder if he had always planned to be a baseball legend. One thing’s certain though, he had a plan…and he worked it. Though the term “proactive” wasn’t hip in the 60s, we can confidently say Yogi was proactive, too. Proactive is the act of creating a situation or causing something to happen (in the future), instead of responding to whatever has happened. Are you living a proactive life or a reactive one? In this issue of Aging Tree Illustrated, we’re discussing proactivity in our home health planning, with our social security and Medicaid benefits, with making our final arrangements, and so much more. Being proactive is a gift to others. Ultimately, it can save us time, money and energy, too. Are you thinking you simply don’t have time to plan? I ask you: Do you have time not to plan? We need to use our time more wisely. Author and therapist Donna M. White, LMHC, CACP, says there are several things we can do to make the most of our time. Her suggestions include making a list, setting deadlines, stopping multi-tasking, delegating responsibilities to others, using our downtime wisely, and rewarding ourselves when we accomplish our goals. Break down your list down into manageable tasks to get started. Getting proactive: put it on your list. Start today by reading this issue; it’s a great first step in knowing where you’re going. And whenever you need, call upon Aging Tree. We are happy to help you get to your ideal destination.

Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

The Power of Being Proactive!

Planning Ahead For Your Senior Living

This is the first in a three-part series about being proactive in planning for your future care. In the first part, we talk about the importance of this mindset. In the August issue, we’ll discuss tangible ways you can start making a plan or improve on the one you have.

W

e had a plan that could save our lives. In the mid1970s, major advances in technology helped put battery-operated smoke detectors in the homes of millions of Americans. Families, like mine, became more aware of not only fire detection but of planning how to get out of the house in case of fire. Maybe you had a plan like that for your family. Perhaps you drilled guidelines into your kids’ head like: “Don’t try to save your favorite toy,” “Stay low to the ground,” or “Always go to the fireman if he calls you.” Maybe you carefully stuck those red circle decals in the corner of your windows to designate where your children’s bedrooms were located so firefighters could find them quickly. You may even have practiced a fire drill to see what worked and what needed tweaking. When you make a plan for the “just in case” times of life, you’re being proactive. People can be proactive with their health by cutting out sugar or taking brisk walks in the evening to reduce their risk of heart disease. They may make the maximum contribution to their 401Ks or put money into IRAs to save for retirement. Yet, many people fail to make a life plan for their senior years.

emotional and mental stress. This stress negatively affects not only your quality of life in the future

Y B Proac T-D Lis:

I have discussed my preferences for senior living and/or long-term care with my family. I know what options are available to me and the costs involved in the lifestyle I desire. I understand what is covered under Medicare, especially that long-term care IS NOT covered. I have designated a power of attorney. I have an updated will.

Great job if you placed a mental checkmark after most of these. If not, think about what you need to do to help ensure you are able to live the life you would choose to live. Obviously, aging isn’t synonymous with a fire emergency, but it can feel that way when something unexpected happens. When you haven’t planned ahead, your only choice is to be reactive rather than proactive. Panic can lead to bad decision making, both for you and your family members. Time and again, spouses and children are left not knowing what an elderly family member’s wishes are, let alone what myriad options are available in regards to no-cost advising, home health care, assisted living/nursing homes, and other aspects of senior living. Not having a plan in place can also cause an intense amount of

Researchers of a study titled Proactive Aging: A Longitudinal Study of Stress, Resources, Agency and Well-being in Late Life1 examined the ways various “internal and external resources” contribute to, among other things, the psychological well-being of older adults experiencing the usual stressors of aging. The researchers also considered three “proactive adaptations,” behaviors older adults may engage in that help enhance their quality of life. These behaviors are available to older adults via their existing resources, such as family support. They include: Health Promotion/Exercise, Marshaling Supcont. pg 10 |8|

port, and--you guessed it--Planning Ahead. “An important aspect of proactivity is planning ahead, because anticipation of future needs allows older adults to take more effective action.2 Financial, environmental, and lifestyle related plans also reflect future orientation that may enhance [Quality of Life].3” Ultimately, experiencing well being later in life was directly influenced, at least in part, by these behaviors. Florida resident Cindy S. finds comfort in the fact that she signed up for a long-term care policy through her work when she was only 37, nearly 15 years ago. “I worked in human resources and heard way too many sad stories of people who had to go out on long-term leave with no resources to support them. That scared me enough into carrying my own policy.”

The policy covers three years of nursing home care or 24-hour in-home care for three years. Because she signed up at a young age, the low cost was locked in at the time of her enrollment. Coincidentally, her stepfather, at the age of 60, had signed up for a similar policy about two years prior to Cindy enrolling. “Mom said that, at the time, she thought it was a waste and tried to talk my stepfather out of it. He insisted, though, and she reluctantly relented,” Cindy says. “He sold insurance years before becoming an accountant and knew all the horror stories, himself.” Fast forward to a recent downturn in her stepfather’s health. “Needless to say, Mom was extremely thankful for the policy,” Cindy says. “My stepfather would always say to Mom, ‘I am doing this to take care of you in the future...our future.’ Mom didn't know what he meant then,

but she knows now.” Although her mother and stepfather had discussed choosing the in-home care route with the policy, her stepfather was concerned about a stranger being in their home, so instead the couple decided he would go into a nursing home when severe health issues did arise. Unfortunately, it is this fear, among others, that can keep people from making the best decisions for their futures. Carmen Tullius, of Concierge Care, an in-home care company, says that in their experience, this fear is one of the three most common that prevent people from being more proactive. “Number one,” explains Tullius, “is someone who they don’t know coming into their home. We work very hard at making sure that our clients feel at ease even in an uncomfortable situation. Once in-home care becomes necessary, we will even meet the caregiver

at a client’s home to make these initial introductions.” Tullius says that in addition to this unfounded fear, assumed cost and lack of family support due to distance deter people from planning ahead for their care. While cost can be a deterrent, Tullius says Concierge will work within any budget to ensure some level of in-home care is in place. An added stressor for both the client and family members can be distance. Family members who live outside of the area may feel lost and unsure of the care a loved one needs or is receiving, Tullius explains. “We offer a ‘Family Room,’ which gives a loved one a bird’s eye view into a client’s care. They can access the client’s account and see exactly what the caregiver did with mom or dad each day. This gives them peace of mind.”

Concierge Care is just one of the many businesses that partner with Aging Tree to equip seniors to be proactive, so they--and their family members--can rest assured their futures are the best they can be. Aging Tree sees people everyday who are reacting to a life event, often the sudden change in the health of a family member who wasn’t prepared and had no plan in place for their care. Via our no-cost advising, we are able to offer guidance in what steps to take next and what options are available for a loved one to live the best life possible. People may not want to consider the challenges that may arise in the future, but we all know they will. We face challenges no matter our ages. Panic can lead to bad decision making, for both the person directly affected and for those who care about them.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. When you take time to plan ahead, you take control of your future. There is power in being proactive. As Aging Tree team member Mona Quinn says, “Being proactive is a lifestyle, not an age.” If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Aging Tree or any of their approved Business Partners by calling 1-866-320-8803. 1 Eva Kahana, PhD, Jessica KelleyMoore, PhD, and Boaz Kahana, PhD, 2 Aspinwall, 2011, 3 Kahana, Kahana & Zhang, 2005

...But I Have a Prescription One of the things that we often hear from our customers is “I have a prescription”. It is difficult as a provider to explain that the insurance may or may not cover something that the doctor may feel is necessary. The issue is not always with the doctor or the product but the insurance determination of coverage. The doctor is great at what they do but knowing what products that every insurance plan covers is next to impossible. We all know that bathroom safety products are not covered even though they are a product that could save tens of thousands in hospital bills they remain a cash only product. Ways to be proactive that will ensure there are no surprises when it comes time to purchase medical equipment, fill a prescription for medications or visit a doctor of your choice is to ensure that the policy covers all your needs. Working with your insurance agent to discuss possible medical equipment needs you have or will have in the future may change your policy choice. Not all insurance policies are the same and some have limitations on the equipment they cover. Further things to look at when selecting a policy or sticking with Medicare as primary

is what quality of product you have access to through that plan. While the products that are provided through your Medicare

plan are safe and meet the definition of what is ordered you will not always get the highest quality product. In addition to what is covered the deductible can make the equipment costs too expensive to purchase. We have many plans in the market that have deductibles as high as $5,000 or more which could put the equipment out of reach. There are times when a product or service will cost more out of pocket through insurance than if you purchase it on your own from a local provider cash. As a provider of medical equipment, we all want to help the patient and we want to do it in a way that is cost effective for our clients. It is difficult to tell someone that your

By Scott Guimond insurance only covers this bottom line product or that the product is not covered at all because we care about what we do and we want our clients to be satisfied. Every patient has the right to make decisions about their care and what products or services they want, however this may conflict with the insurance policy we choose. Take a good look at the benefits to ensure that you are covered and know what your policy entitles you to so you can make an informed decision for your future needs. Paying a little more in premiums now may save you thousands later, especially if you know the medical needs exist that will require special treatment or equipment. Check with your insurance before you make a purchase to ensure that the product you are asking for or is being prescribed is covered and what your deductible is and if not covered check with your medical supply provider and see what choices you have. You probably realize that one of the most common reasons people die penniless is because they needed expensive care at home, at an Assisted Living Community, or in a Nursing Home. Even though many people 65 years and older accept that they have a high risk of needing care, many think that they won’t have to pay for that care. INSIDE ADVISOR Be Happy, I ndependent and Healthy As Y ou Age

Growing older can create challenges that affect our happiness, independence and health. However, there are some proactive steps we can take to protect each of these vital parts of life. While both negative and positive changes occur in our bodies, we can take steps to maintain good mental and physical health. Many different things happen to our bodies as we age. Our skin, bones, and even our brains may begin to behave differently. If you are proactive, you can prevent the negative

changes that come with old age from catching you by surprise. Happiness comes from having a positive attitude. We can best maintain a positive attitude by adopting a hobby and by socializing. A 2014 study found that “watching 20 minutes of funny videos improved memory in older people and also reduced their levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Some studies have also shown a link between laughter and a lower risk for heart disease.” Remain independent and physically healthy by exercising your mind and body. Simple things like walking, doing yoga, or doing balancing exercises can help. A Harvard study of over 1,600 older men and women found that “adding light exercises to your routine,

By Kim Denoff even if you didn’t work out before, can make you over 25 percent less likely to become disabled, eat well, visit family doctor regularly and follow the advice they give you.” Finally, keeping off extra pounds, keeping your body in motion, and remaining spiritually and emotionally fulfilled, coupled with proactive physical health, can greatly affect the ability to remain independent and happy during your golden years. Be proactive now and enjoy those golden years!

Fireworks Eye Safety Fireworks and celebration go together, especially during the Fourth of July. But thousands of people suffer injuries from fireworks each year in the United States. According to the most recent Fireworks Injury Report from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 11,900 injuries related to fireworks were treated in the emergency room in 2015. 1900 of those injuries were eye related. In the most severe cases, fireworks can cause chemical burns, retinal detachment, or even penetrate through the eye – all of which can permanently cause eye damage and loss of vision. The most common culprit is the sparkler. Most people think sparklers are harmless due to their size. However they can reach temperatures of up to 2000 degrees! Those

injured by fireworks are not necessarily handling the explosives themselves. In fact, nearly half of people injured are bystanders. So just because you’re not lighting it does not mean you’re out of the firing line – bottle rockets are known to especially fly in unpredictable directions. The best way to prevent an injury is by attending a professional fireworks show rather than purchasing fireworks for home use. For those who attend a professional display, make sure you respect safety barriers and view fireworks from at least 500 feet away. For those who decide to purchase consumer fireworks, follow these safety tips: never let young children play with fireworks of any kind; people who handle fireworks and bystanders should wear protective

How Hospice Can Help Most families are understandably overwhelmed when a loved one is referred to hospice. The looming uncertainties and difficult decisions associated with end-of-life care add extra stress to an already difficult situation. However, hospice programs can help make the situation a little easier by controlling pain, reducing anxiety and offering support to terminally ill patients and their families. Even though it is a common misconception, hospice is not a place. It is a philosophy of care that focuses on enhancing people’s comfort and quality of life during their last six months. By treating physical symptoms as

well as addressing emotional and spiritual concerns, hospice can ease the discomfort associated with the final stages of life, making it more meaningful for patients and their loved ones. As part of its commitment to the community, and the patients and families it serves, VITAS provides support in many ways, including offering free bereavement counseling to anyone grieving over the loss of a loved one. Families, children included, need special guidance and support after losing someone close to them. The counseling is provided by highly trained bereavement specialists.

VITAS works hard to ensure that people have access to these and other important resources. Their trained hospice professionals work closely with patients and their families to provide the caring, compassionate attention they need. Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and other private insurances plans. For more information about VITAS, please visit www.vitas.com or call (800) 93-VITAS.

Our Pledge to Veterans VITAS is committed to serving those who served America. We have developed specialized services to meet those needs: • The VITAS team is trained to assess veteran-specific issues • We offer assistance navigating the VA system and coordinating Medicare benefits • To assure final respects, VITAS may assist in planning military memorials

Dehydration Most people think of dehydration as something that happens because you don’t drink enough water or you have food poisoning. But a lot of things like medications, alcohol and caffeine intake can catalyze it. Dehydration sends hundreds of thousands of people to the hospital on an annual basis. Studies show that 75 percent of Americans are walking around in a chronic state of dehydration from consuming less than the recommended daily fluid intake (3 liters per day for a man, 2.2 liters per day for a woman). Dehydration should be taken more seriously, especially in the

summer months. As the weather gets warmer, the number of dehydrated patients increase in Urgent Care Centers across the country. In the summer, dehydration is related to hot temperatures and being active outdoors, losing salt

Avoid Computer Scams How To Be Proactive With Today’s Technology, Part 1 COMPUTER BRANCH

I

n this month’s article, I will go over how to recognize and avoid some widespread computer ‘scams’. One of the most common scams is when you receive a phone call or pop up and someone tells you that you may have a virus which is slowing down your computer. Bottom line, THIS IS SO F ALSE! Why? No one can access anything on your computer without you granting them access and you downloading or ‘linking’ to a piece of software. It’s that simple. One thing they do to scare you is to have you navigate to areas in your computer where ‘logs’ are kept – once there, the show you ‘Critical Errors and Warnings’ – and yes, these are errors but not the type you think, most of them have NOTHING to do with the way you system is running – these ‘logs’ are meant to be viewed by professionals only. Think of it like looking at your medical records, you will come across things that can be very upsetting but once explained by a medical professional they are not what you thought them to be. Once you see these items, they will tell you they can ‘fix’ them but in truth, all they want is access to your system so they can look around and plant malware on it and

get as much information as they can. Did you know that there are pieces of software that can capture every keystroke you make! Once there is a record of what you typed, someone who has access to your system can come back in, locate that file and before you know it, you are left with a

huge credit card bill and a zero balance in your bank account! Also, some of this software can be hidden from anti-virus and malware programs! So, best practices, D ON’ T LET ANY ONE you don’t know have access to your system! No matter who they say they are with, D O NOT GIV E THEM ACCESS! ! Another scam is that you may receive an email from (what you think) is your bank, credit card company or insurance company asking you to change (or update) your information. Seems harmless enough, but it is NO . Within the email is a ‘link’ they want to you click on and when

JULY 2017 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803

By Christopher Theodore you do, it takes you directly to what you think is your bank, credit card or insurance login screen. You have been there before and everything looks like it did the last time you logged on. IT NOT! This is a ‘picture’ of the login screen, once you enter your User ID and Password into the form, you have just compromised your security! Have a look; With very little code, they can capture your Username and Password! How? This IS NOT THE INSTITU TIONS WEBSITE – IT’ S ONE THAT Y OU WERE D IRECTED TO BY THE LINK ! So how to avoid this? The simplest way is TO NOT CLICK on the link! A bank, credit card company or insurance company WILL NEV ER ASK Y OU TO LONG ON AND U PD ATE Y OU R INF ORMATION! Just call and ask them! One way to prove you are not on their website is to clink on some link s (see red box above) and see where it takes you, if you are not taken there, then you ARE NOT WORKING with the real website. PLAN AHEAD WITH A VOTRAN VALUE PASS When it comes to public transportation, Votran wants your travel to be as convenient and stressfree as possible. While riding the bus may seem intimidating at first, with a little planning, each and every trip can be successful! When it comes to paying for your Votran trips, there are several options available. If you plan to pay for your trip in cash, please bring exact change; because bus operators cannot provide change, they require exact fare amounts. If you’re planning to take several bus trips in a 24-hour period, consider purchasing a full fare, one day pass. For $3.75, you’ll get unlimited boardings for 24 hours (after your first boarding) anywhere in the county on the regular fixed route buses. With proof of age status or disability status, a reduced fare, one day pass costs only $1.85. One day passes are easy to buy with exact cash at the time you board any Votran fixed route vehicle and are the only value pass available at the time of boarding. However, the most convenient, and cost efficient, choice is to purchase a value pass in advance. Value passes provide unlimited boardings for the time limit of the pass, valid for consecutive days after the first use. Not only are value passes easy to use, but they help you to save money! In addition to discount pricing (compared to a single-ride fare), fares are half price for seniors, youths and persons with disabilities. Passes can be purchased at Votran’s main office (950 Big Tree Road, South Daytona), the transfer plaza, the county administration building in DeLand, and at several libraries throughout the county. You can also purchase a value pass online at Votran.org. If you have questions, or would like to learn more about purchasing a value pass, call 386-7617700, email VotranCustomerService@volusia.org, or visit Votran.org. Aging Tree Travel Adventures It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…in July? Why yes! TRAVEL BRANCH

E

very December we take a Christmas Coach Tour, and this year is no different. So of course, we are celebrating Christmas in July – all month long! – to talk about our Mountain Holiday Spectacular. It seems strange for most people to begin thinking of the holidays this early in the year, but to be honest, we have been planning this Christmas trip since February. Honestly, we never really got the holidays out of our heads. Do you forget your Christmas carols during the middle of the year? I don’t! Getting “Deck the Halls” stuck in my head inspired our first stop. Madison, Georgia – known as the town Sherman refused to burn – has over one hundred antebellum homes to its name and is the perfect stop for the night. While we’re there, we will tour three of the most beautiful historic houses that will be spectacularly decorated for the Christmas Parade of Homes. We will be “Dreaming of a Smoky Mountain Christmas” as we make our way to Pigeon Forge, arguably the greatest place within the Smoky Mountains. Various attractions, shows, sights, stores, and incredible views make it the perfect spot for an unforgettable holiday getaway. Our first evening there will be filled with entertainment. The Hatfield & McCoy’s Disastrous Christmas Show where Ma’ McCoy and Pa’ Hatfield set aside their differences in the spirit of Christmas will be a dinner show complete with holiday singing, side-splitting com-

edy, dancing, and jaw-dropping stunts – and it’s said they put the FUN in dysFUNctional.

What’s a trip to the Smoky Mountains without DOLLYWOOD? After some morning touring of Sevier County, including the Bush’s Baked Beans Visitor Center – we might even get the secret recipe from Duke – we will make our way to the famed Dollywood for a “Smoky Mountain Christmas” like no other. We will enjoy a lineup of live Christmas shows that celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, including: • It’s A Wonderful Life – a live Dollywood performance of the Christmas Classic (my favorite). • Christmas in the Smokies – a 14-member cast performance of hometown holiday favorites. • MistleTones – 4 ladies performing a cappella traditional standards with a new twist. "On Dasher on Prancer"…oh, I mean onto our next stop…Dillard, Georgia for lunch in true Southern Holiday hospitality. We will enjoy generous portions of homemade “Christmas Dishes” at the Dillard House, a little nook in the hills with family-style meals

JULY 2017 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803

By Amanda M. Vallone made from recipes passed down through hundreds of years’ worth of Dillard family generations, all of it cooked with only the freshest, farm raised ingredients from scratch…yummmmm…My mouth is already watering. "Run, run, Rudolph, Santa’s got to make it to town"…Or our group has to make it to Lake Lanier for the seven-mile drive of millions of twinkling Christmas lights and stunning holiday displays the town is famous for. That night in Lake Lanier will be completely breathtaking and a truly magical night of lights, music, and wonder. Our drive will end at the Holiday Village so that we can pay Santa a visit. In the words of Louis Armstrong, "I’m dreaming of a White Christmas" Just like the ones I used to know. Where the tree tops glisten and the"…mountain is carved with a Confederate soldier? Wait a second…um… That would be Stone Mountain, Georgia, our final stop. We will enjoy Stone Mountain’s Christmas festivities including their historic square, Memorial Hall Museum, and the holly jolly celebration, snow included. So, since December isn’t here yet, it’s Christmas in July. I think I may be more excited for the holidays to get here than my daughter. GARDENING BRANCH

Strong Roots

Take a Little Time to Grow Some Thyme

I

f you enjoy cooking Italian food then you will be familiar with our feature herb this month – Thyme. Thyme is part of the trio of Italian or Mediterranean herbs, Basil, Oregano and Thyme. It is an evergreen herb with culinary, medicinal and ornamental uses. Thymes use dates back ancient societies. The Egyptians used it to embalm bodies. The Greeks used it in their baths and to burn as incense in their temples. But it was the Romans who helped spread its use throughout Europe. By the middle ages, it was used for a variety of medicinal as well as culinary purposes. Thyme is a perennial plant that is well suited for growing here in Florida. It prefers a hot sunny climate but can tolerate deep freezes. It grows best in well-drained soil and can tolerate drought. In fact, the biggest issue I have had with Thyme is making sure you don’t water it too much as it tends to die with over watering. I find it does fine with just watering it a couple times a week. The most common form of thyme is Thymus Vulgaris which is a group of thyme varieties including German thyme, Summer Thyme, Winter thyme and creeping thyme. While it has some medicinal uses it is most commonly used for culinary purposes. Like basil, there are a variety of flavored thymes, (lime, lemon, citrus, and caraway) as well.

Thyme has several health benefits. First, it has one of the highest antioxidant concentrations in any herb. The phenolic antioxidants found in thyme, including lutein,

Thyme zeaxanthin, and thymonin all helping to neutralize and eliminate free radicals that cause damage to various tissues and organs in the body. Thyme also has a high concentration of iron and other essential minerals that stimulate the production of red blood cells, thereby boosting your body’s circulations and the oxygenation of essential organ systems. Thyme also contains potassium and manganese which aide in reducing the stress on the cardiovascular system by relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure which may help prevent atherosclerosis, strokes, heart attacks, and coronary heart disease. One of the oldest uses for thyme in traditional medicine is as a respiratory health agent. It has been used to treat bronchitis, chronic asthma, congestion, colds, flus, blocked sinuses, or seasonal allergies. It can act as an expectorant and an anti-inflammatory

by John Joslin substance, eliminating phlegm and mucus from the respiratory tracts, easing inflammation to help breathing, and prevent microbial development that can lead to illness. Brewing thyme leaves into a powerful tea is the best way to achieve this sort of relief for respiratory ailments. It should be noted though that consuming large amounts of thyme in any form has been known to cause gastrointestinal stress. If you have a sensitive stomach it is advised to start out slowly adding thyme into your diet. It should also be noted that in the case of an illness taking thyme should not be substituted for seeing a medical physician. In many acute illnesses a more aggressive course of therapy may be needed. So this summer is a great time to begin using thyme in your diet. (And while you are doing that remember to make today a good day to have a good day). For more information or for any questions you can contact John Joslin at the Common Ground Farm 386-740-9141, 1330 E. QUICK TIPS

Let's Be Proactive

Document Preparedness Documents Needed By Your Agent/ surrogate To Properly Function Under A Power Of Attorney Or Health Care Surrogate OK, so you have taken the big step of designating someone (spouse, child or other family member, close friend, or trusted professional) to handle your affairs for you in the event you become incapacitated and unable to manage your affairs independently. The next step is to assemble the documents and information that your Agent/Surrogate will need to effectively serve your needs while you are incapacitated. While your Agent may be someone who is intimately familiar with your activities, most often he or she is not. Rather than call upon that person to scramble around and collect the information in the heat of an emergency, pre-plan for this by create a portfolio of the following documents or copies: 1. Copies of your official identification (driver’s license/state issued identification card, social security card, Medicare card (A-B-D), health insurance card/Medicaid card); 2. Clear copy of your power of attorney or designation of health care surrogate; 3. Certified copy of your birth certificate; 4. Certified copy of death certificate of predeceased spouse (if a widow or widower); 5. Your original DD-214 or other official discharge document issued by United States Department of Defense (if a veteran or veteran’s spouse)--- The original DD214 may not be available. If not, confirm the residence of the veteran at the time of discharge and call the county recorder or clerk of courts for that county and determine whether the veteran recorded his/ her DD-214 at the time of discharge. If so, order a certified copy of the DD-214, which should be provided at no charge.

BUSINESS BRANCH Hearing Healthcare Centers LLC. (“HHC”), your friendly neighborhood full service hearing center is owned and operated by Lisa and Rick Jones. This husband and wife team are West Volusia locals, having resided in Orange City for over 25 years. Lisa has been helping people hear better for over 20 years and is Nationally Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences and is a licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist. HHC’s primary office is inside the “Aging Tree” at the Kohl's Plaza in Orange City. They opened this office in 2013, as a way of making their services available to more people struggling with hearing loss. They also operate two other hearing healthcare suites in two of Central Florida's most prominent ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) offices. Hearing Healthcare Centers LLC. provide a wide range of services that can meet all your hearing healthcare needs, including: Hearing Loss Consultations and

Hearing Healthcare

Information, Ear cleanings/wax removal, Free hearing screenings, Comprehensive hearing tests, Hearing aid sales/fittings, Programming/reprogramming, hearing aid repairs/maintenance and 2nd opinion consultations. HHC’s mission is "To provide a customized hearing healthcare program utilizing personal, compassionate service and the best products to improve communication with your family and friends." They strive to fit their patients with products & services to fit their audiological needs, physical ability, lifestyle criteria and financial budget. They have an excellent reputation as exemplified by the numerous patient testimonials that have appeared in previous Aging Tree magazine issues. Lisa and Rick believe that their patients’ testimonials tell the HHC experience better than any other form of advertising. Their patients are so pleased with the service that they share their experiences with

many of their family and friends resulting in continued growth for the business. Lisa and Rick take a proactive approach when it comes to hearing health. This approach starts with spreading the message that everyone over the age of 50 should have a hearing screening/hearing test to establish a baseline of their current hearing ability (similar to having a baseline EKG or mammogram, and just as important). By having a simple screening, the individual will be able to monitor their hearing health from year to year and potentially seek professional help in a timely manner. Hearing Healthcare Centers LLC is a reputable place to seek help if you find yourself having to address any hearing healthcare issues and a great resource for gathering information about hearing loss and hearing instruments before you make any decisions.

INSIDE ADVISOR

VA Benefits

Veterans Benefits; Easy As Hut,2, 3, 4!

A

lbert Einstein once said that “the hardest thing to understand in the world is the income tax.” Were he to query about the second hardest thing, it would not surprise me if he had chosen VA benefits. Given that VA benefits are administered by the same type of codified federal laws as taxes, it comes as no small wonder that the process is confusing. Just as it pays to have a good tax consultant, having an accredited professional help to prepare any application for VA benefits is certainly sound advice. At Volusia County Veterans Services, a free public service of the county, just such help is available! With four offices throughout the county, our staff is committed to ensuring that all who served our country are afforded every VA health and monetary benefit to which they are entitled. “So how do I get started?” you ask. Firstly don’t assume that VA benefits are not for you. If you served in any branch of the military, to include certain WWII merchant marines, and you were discharged with anything better than a dishonorable discharge, then there could be benefits available to you. The VA, at its discretion, may even grant medical benefits

to those with a dishonorable discharge under certain conditions. Also, know that VA benefits are not only for the combat wounded. Any injury or disease sustained during the time of your enlistment has potential for compensation, such as hearing loss. Monetary benefits may also be available for wartime veterans with no in service injuries but who meet certain eligibility criteria, especially if they require the Aid And Attendance of another person to care for themselves. No combat or overseas service is required! For an aging veteran population, healthcare is always a concern. Although entitlement to VA healthcare can be an especially sticky wicket, there are several means by which a person can gain entitlement to the comprehensive health services offered by VA. Even if you’ve been denied before, entitlement can often be established by utilizing the correct method and effectively communicating your situation to the VA. One sure way to find out if you’re eligible is to visit your local county veterans service officer. Prepare for your visit by finding your discharge documents or DD214. If you’ve misplaced them, no worry, we can often order them from the National Archives. In ad-

By Jeff Bumb dition, bring any military medical records that you may have, if you don’t have them we can often obtain them or engage VA to do so. Walk in and see us at: County Administration Building 123 W. Indiana Ave. DeLand, FL 32720 (386) 740-5102 OR County Administration Building 250 N. Beach St. Daytona Beach, FL 32114 (386) 254-4646 For appointments at our Orange City and New Smyrna Beach offices, call (386) 740-5102 or (386) 254-4646. Jeff Bumb is the Volusia County Veterans Services Director. He brings the experience of 20 years of Army service including three combat deployments and an extensive knowledge of VA benefits and applicable laws to serve the county’s veteran population.
