Going for the Gold
D
id you spend some time in PyeongChang South Korea last month? Maybe you’re one of the millions who couldn’t get enough of the Winter Olympics. The come-from-behind wins and hard-fought medals had many of us glued to our TVs as we celebrated with the victors and cried with the defeated. To me, one of the most interesting aspects of the Olympics is how the margin by which an Olympian earns a medal often is minuscule. For example, USA’s downhill skiing darling Lindsey Vonn captured bronze in the race in which the gold-earning run was less than half a second faster! Thus, for these amazing athletes, the difference between making it to the podium or not often is the result of split-second decisions to tuck tighter, fly higher or spin faster. And, they’re not certain it worked until all the results are in! Seeing how decisions affect outcomes in the fast-forward world of Olympic competition is a metaphor for life. You and I make decisions daily that affect immediate moments and years down the road. Sometimes taking no action has the greatest impact. If you’re faced with a difficult choice, be encouraged by the risk takers who have led the way before you. Our lives are changed by decisions every day. If you feel trapped, you owe it to yourself to try and break free, just like the Snedden family – this month’s Legacy Magazine feature story – was able to do. Enjoy reading the tale of how, with one decision, a man re-charted his family’s future. Let every issue of Legacy Magazine be your guide to effective decision making. Whether it’s regarding eating healthier, setting up a trust, better understanding VA or social security benefits, or knowing how Hospice social workers get the job done – topics we explore in the following pages – we want to help you through the ups and downs of life. Start the journey with us here and now. Decisions can be difficult and uncomfortable, but Olympians don’t make it to the podium without sacrifice. Go for the gold in your life, and even if you don’t earn a medal there’s always a reward in the effort. Make your days great…you’re in charge of them.

ing strategy—they would reduce the fare just days before departure. So, us Florida residents who could grab a vacation bag and run out the door to catch a cruise really had a great opportunity in picking up some incredible deals. Oh, how the times have changed…The rule of thumb now is plan early and save.
Plan Early and Save! Over the last few years, the cruise lines began offering the best deals for passengers who committed to a vacation early. If the price goes up during the pro-

price went up? These fluctuating prices often leave vacation planners perplexed at the cost of air travel. So how do you get around these pricing changes? Well, you can’t. But you can play it smarter. Next time you’re planning a vacation, look into the airfare first and early. Airline tickets are available up to 330 days (about 11 months) prior to departure, and while there’s no hard and fast rule, the sweet spot to purchase most tickets is between 5-8 months prior. |6|
I have a group going to Spain in September, the best prices on air were $400 discount per person when we booked in February (7 months prior to departure). When pricing air, don’t only look for the “most affordable” price. Be sure to check out the schedule, too. Sometimes when you get the most affordable tickets, it comes at a much greater price of time-frame and long layovers. And, as airline tickets are subject to change and based on availability, looking the week prior to departure with limited inventory available will surely come with a higher price tag. Budget Meets Payment Plans Many times, travelers will wait until they have the money to be-
gin their planning, but as you now know, waiting isn’t always beneficial for you. If you plan far enough in advance, you can divide payments up over the course of a year or more. And planning your vacation will give you an idea of what kind of budget you’ll need to have. We have clients who have $12.76 left over from grocery shopping that week, and they’ll come into the office and give us that spare change to add to their vacation payments. By the time final payment comes around, those clients not only have their vacation paid off, but also the extras like shore excursions and drink cards. When to Plan At the end of the day, you want
to plan far in advance for the best deals. We recommend selecting your trips in December-January, as the vendors offer amazing deals during this planning season. If you are a cruise-only kind of traveler, October is National Plan a Cruise Month, making then a good time to look also. Your travel agent can certainly assist you in finding the best deals possible. We are often thought of as a service that will cost our clients more, but we really save our clients tons of money, let alone time and aggravation. A Family's Rewritten Story
C
hildren of coal miners in the 1930s hardly enjoyed the joie de vivre of adolescence. Theirs was a short childhood, often abruptly transitioning to coal-mine work when they were hardly teenagers.
Boys were expected to be mining, while girls tended to factory jobs that would have them traversing countryside by train and logging desperately long days. Fathers often would be absent for long periods of times and mothers had endless chores. Coal-mining families’ lives were unstable. They moved from city to city as they followed the coal veins across the rural landscape. This is the life from which Bill Snedden narrowly escaped. The Seminal Moment Dr. Bill Snedden has achieved the highest level of education possible. He’s earned degrees from America’s finest engineering
schools. He worked for General Electric for decades. He became an accomplished gymnast who earned a place in an Olympic Trial. He’s a published author working on his third book. He’s an experienced woodworker. He’s the father of successful men and women who have blessed him and his wife, Joan, with grandchildren and great grandchildren. But, if had it not been for one brave decision, Snedden’s fruitful life would be only a dream. See, Snedden wasn’t destined for success. He was “supposed” to work the coal mines of Pennsylvania like his father did, his grandfather did, and like his mother’s relatives did. Coal mining was his family’s heritage. Snedden’s parents’ ancestors came from the coal-mining towns in Scotland, explained Snedden in his memoir, It Is What It Is. His father and three (or more) generations before him were coal miners in Scotland and in the United States. His mother’s heritage is Scotch, Irish, and Dutch via coal mining also in Scotland. “All of the children of my paternal family were born in the coal mining area of Pennsylvania, but thanks to my loving parents, I nor

By Vickie Pleus, APR, CPRC my brothers or sisters ever saw the inside of a coal mine,” said Snedden. That’s because his father said, “enough is enough.” The seminal moment – when his parents decided they would risk everything to pursue a better life for their children – formulated Snedden’s drive for success in all he does. With unabashed ambition, he pursues anything he sees as a worthy challenge. This winning combination of perseverance and guts is the formula for success that Snedden, 80, learned at an early age from his father. That’s why Darrell Snedden, a third-generation coal miner, who learned and worked his craft in Pennsylvania in the 1930s and 40s, is his hero. He’s hoped his father’s and ancestors’ pioneering spirit has rubbed off on him. And, it has. In his memoirs, Snedden summarizes his family heritage and the gift his ancestors have passed along to him, his children, his grandchildren and the generations to come. His ancestors’ collective story is one of living and leaving the coal-mining world and a way of life that had successfully harnessed generation after generation of Snedden families until Snedden’s father sought something more. cont. pg 10

The Great Escape By all accounts, young Snedden and his siblings were heading straight for a poor life of dangerous, difficult work in the 1940s. Coal mining had been a dominant industry in Pennsylvania since the early 1700s, and generations of men before him had spent their
working lives in mines. It was a hard life. “In those days, in rural mining towns, no one owned a car, so they had to live close to where they worked so they could walk there,” said Snedden. “Coal miners weren’t paid much. After they got their groceries, paid their light bill and so forth, they had very little money left over to do anything. “When you’re a coal miner, you’re poor,” he said. “You live in the company house, you buy groceries from the company store and then, if you have any money left over, you go to the company store to buy some sort of entertainment. It was a cycle of entrapment,” said Snedden. Snedden’s father had been working in coal mining since he was 10 years old and it’s all he knew. But, Snedden’s mother Margaret, who was more educated than his father, helped her husband move up the ranks to be-
come a miner inspector. This position wasn’t too enviable though: inspectors were the ones who entered the coal mines first. Yes, he had achieved a higher rank, but Darrell remained stuck. He wanted more for his family than that coal-mining life, and his ambitions stretched beyond what was available to him there. He was desperate to leave coal mining. He and his wife’s brothers and sisters pooled their funds and their families and formulated their exit. “My parents got together with the others and said, ‘Let’s get the hell out of here,’” said Snedden. “It took a lot of guts to leave Pennsylvania; they didn’t have any other expertise except coal mining.” The group relocated to Connecticut in search of a better life in 1944 when Snedden was six years old.
Two Father’s Legacies Snedden is proud of his family’s legacy. His father knew nothing outside of coal mining, but took it upon himself to learn conveyors and machinery to support his family after the move. He learned new skills, took new risks, and searched diligently for work. “One of my father’s philosophies was that if you knew how to do a lot of people’s jobs, you’ll always have a job. He knew how to fix things and do other people’s jobs,” said Snedden. “He’d say to me, ‘If you can do other things, then you will always have a job’…and he always did,” he added. Snedden took notes from his father’s legacy and incorporated them into his own life and he did things his siblings wouldn’t dare. He became the only of his parents’ children to go to college, became a self-trained gymnast, and enjoyed time as a self-taught scuba diver, too. Always up for a challenge, he wanted to be an inspiration to his children. Snedden looks at his father’s example on how to live fearlessly and wisely. The books will be part of the legacy Snedden leaves for his family, something everlasting that holds his family story, his ideas and dreams. The books are a tangible record of his ideas and beliefs, a way for his ancestors to know him for generations to come. “As I write my memoirs, I think about my legacy,” said Snedden. “I think all humans at some point in time realize they won’t live forever. I wanted to leave more of me, us, and our experiences, and so I figured a legacy is something you put in print. “I also leave a legacy of several woodworking pieces, both furniture and art, made with love and care for our children to enjoy after I am gone,” he added. “If you were born, lived a self-interested life, and nobody noticed, that’s a shame,” said Snedden.
“I want to leave a legacy to our children, and the books are one way to do that.” The Sneddens are an example of a family who broke the chains of an industry that owned their livelihoods. Powered by the hope of having of something better, their faith carried them to new places to seek new challenges, and the perseverance of one father and his family changed future generations forever. *** We’re wise to follow Darryl Snedden’s example: Just because the situations look bleak, and there seems to be not way out, it’s worth trying to make a change. Let’s not let circumstances dictate our paths. Charge through

expectations and create the legacy you want. Show your descendants how to break the cycle. National Nutrition Month You CAN Have the Vitality and Health You Desire LIVING WELL BRANCH
M
arch is National Nutrition Month and the theme for this year is “Go Further with Food”. We have spoken often in
this Living Well Branch about the fact that the foods we choose can make a real difference in how we feel, think and move. Having the vitality and health we desire can be greatly impacted by developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Creating an environment for meals that is fun and joy-filled as often as possible is a worthwhile goal for many important reasons. In addition to these reminders, another key message for this month is to always practice good food safety. Don’t risk eating or drinking anything that you suspect has spoiled. Our sense of smell likely has changed and often is not reliable. Plan to eat leftovers within 3 to 4 days (or freeze for up
to 3 to 4 months). Labeling with a marker on a label or piece of tape will help to keep track of when the meal was first prepared. Another factor that contributes to food waste is the confusion that exists about what those dates on food and drink packaging really mean. Many people consider these to be expiration dates. However, that may not be the case. Food manufacturers provide these dates based on what they consider to be the best quality for that specific food item. For example, “Use by”, “Best by” and “Best Before” dates are often found on condiments, such as mustard and ketchup. In many cases, these items are safe to eat beyond the date stamp, IF they have been stored properly. If the label says to refrigerate after opening and has been stored inside a cabinet, the safety of that food is at risk. “Sell by” dates are used for perishable foods, such as meats and dairy products. It’s possible these foods may be used a few days after the date, as long as they were properly stored at a safe temperature. It is not easy to consider not eating food that is “beyond safe to eat” however your gastrointestinal tract and immune system will thank you. You may have noticed over the years that when dining out the portions of most foods and drinks have increased in size. Another way to Go Further with Food includes being mindful of

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP portion sizes. Choosing smaller portions will not only help to reduce food waste, it will more specifically meet your body’s nutritional needs with half the plate filled with fruits and vegetables as My Plate recommends. Splitting a meal with a buddy can be a good option. You may even be able to request a smaller portion when eating out, though if not, consider asking for a to-go container at the start of a meal. This will make it easier to avoid overeating and will provide a leftover to enjoy the next day. Have you heard of the Salad in a Jar Parties? These increasingly popular “meal in a jar” gatherings provide the opportunity to have a greater variety of foods to choose from that would be easy or even possible to keep in your personal refrigerator. Guests typically bring 3-5 Mason jars or similar containers and 1 or 2 ingredients they have selected from the list of suggestions. I will often order the jars in bulk to have available for purchase at a cost-effective price. If carrots are chosen, for example, would bring a large bowl chopped or shredded and ready to go. INSIDE ADVISOR Legal Disabled Child or Grandchild? Use a Supplemental Needs Trust If I had a dollar for every parent or grandparent who thinks that leaving a disabled child’s inheritance to a sibling or other loved one who will “take care of” the disabled child is a good idea, I’d be wealthy. That’s actually the worst thing to do. What if the loved one dies or becomes disabled? What if they get sued or divorced? Now that Americans are living longer than they did in years past, including those with disabilities, this is an especially important subject.
Planning by parents and grandparents can make all the difference in the life of an adult child with a disability, as well as that of his or her siblings who may be left with the responsibility for caretaking (on top of their own careers and caring for their own families). Supplemental needs trusts (also known as "special needs" trusts) are an important component of planning for a disabled child, even when the child is an adult. These trusts allow a disabled beneficiary to receive inheritances, gifts, lawsuit settlements, or other funds and yet not lose her eligibility for certain government programs like Medicaid. As their name implies, supplemental needs trusts are designed not to provide basic support, but

Health Wise Colon Cancer Awareness A subject close to my heart, March is National Colon Cancer Awareness month. Colon By Kim Denoff cancer strikes 1 in 20 Americans. Researchers are not sure why some people get colon cancer. Even the most healthy of individuals who work out daily, avoid fatty diets, do not drink or smoke, or even those who eat vegetarian diets, have gotten colon cancer. Known as a silent killer, most people do not realize they have it, or sometimes even ignore the subtle symptoms until it has progressed to an aggressive, metastatic disease. According to the CDC, “Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. If everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided.” Colon cancer starts in the inner lining of the colon and/or rectum, slowly growing through some or all of its layers. It typically starts as a growth of tissue called a polyp. A particular type of polyp, called an adenoma, can then develop into cancer. Early screening by simply having a colonoscopy, will allow doctors to remove pre-cancerous polyps before they have the opportunity to progress. If you are between the ages of 50 to 75, please see your doctor and discuss when you should be screened. We are fortunate to have some of the best GI doctors in our community. Top 5 Reasons People Wear Compression Socks Most people can benefit from wearing compression socks, stockings or sleeves. They have become incredibly popular among athletes, nurses, teachers, and anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet. But compression is also helpful to anyone who has a sedentary lifestyle and spends a lot of time sitting. But why? What’s the benefit of wearing compression socks? 1. Improve blood flow and reduce swelling in your legs and feet - If you spend a lot of time on your feet, gravity slows your circulation which often results in swelling and tired feet. Compression helps give your circulation a boost to counteract these effects. 2. Avoid blood clots, especially in travel - In a similar way, if you spend a lot of time sitting, gravity can cause your blood to pool due to inactivity which puts you at risk of developing blood clots. Compression garments help to
keep your blood moving. When traveling by plane, especially for long periods, the earth’s gravity slows down your circulation and you become very inactive. This combination of events can cause the blood to clot and upon returning to normal activity the clot may become lodged in vital organs and cause severe medical issues. 3. Vein Disease - If you deal with the swelling, itching, burning and leg cramps associated with varicose veins and spider veins, compression socks can help! In addition to helping ease these irritations, when you wear them consistently, your compression socks will help slow vein disease. 4. Athletes – Many athletes enjoy wearing compression while practicing their favorite sports and believe it helps to relieve shin splints and reduces muscle trau-

By Raelyn Armien ma. Better circulation can lead to more energy and stamina. After workout use helps to prevent lactic acid avoiding soreness. 5. Pregnancy & postpartum – Most pregnant women suffer from swollen feet and ankles, but additional health risks occur in pregnancy and postpartum that may cause your doctor to suggest using compression socks or stockings. The tightest compression in the socks are at the ankle and it gradually decreases going up the leg. This promotes better circulation throughout your system. If you think you would benefit from compression therapy, stop by our office to be measured and check out the variety of styles, colors and sizes available!

H
ave you stopped and looked around at what today’s technology has to offer seniors? If you have not, this article is going to focus on one amazing item. The Amazon Alexa Family of products!
(c) – Make phone calls, send texts or SMS (Short Message Service) and even make calls to landlines! (d) – Listen to audios (books and music), (e) – Turn room lights and appliances on and off... Please note that this list is far from complete! She also has a host of ‘skills’ to choose from. You can see all of them by typing (in any browser) ‘alexa skill list on amazon’. There will be 100’s of them!
Since the Echo was introducted in November 2014 she has opened up a whole new world for many, many folks (seniors especially). We have all heard of Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana. They are billed as ‘Smart Assistants’, but they are ‘built into’ other devices (smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc.). On the other hand, Echo is a standalone assistant which means you don’t need ‘another’ device to work with her. So what can you do with Echo (her name is Alexa)? Well to start off with; (a) – Set alarms, (b) – Set timers, reminders (for medications or appointments), create shopping list and 2Do lists
She also offers hours of fun just ask her things like; ‘Alexa, tell me a joke’ ‘Alexa, tell me a riddle’ ‘Alexa, sing me a song’ ‘Alexa, sneeze’ ‘Alexa, bark like a dog’ ‘Alexa, what is value of pi?’ ‘Alexa, find Chuck Norris’ ‘Alexa, give me the latest news’ Alexa, what is the weather outside like?’ I could go on and on, all you need to do is always precede anything you want to ask her by saying her name; ‘Alexa.......’ and she will do her best to give you the answer. She also will tell you if she cannot answer that by saying, ‘I don’t know that’.
By Christopher Theodore ‘Alexa, play Radio Mystery Theater’ ‘Alexa, open Radio Inner Sanctum’ (If you love old time radio shows, there are 100’s of them to choose from. I think they are 1000x better than TV shows because it makes us use our imagination). The best part of this – Alexa is very affordable for just about everyone. It starts with the Echo Dot, then the Echo, then the Echo Plus. Amazon has added a few more products as well to the Echo family, the Echo Show and Echo Spot. There is so much more Alexa can do and I would love to show it to you – I will be giving free demonstrations of Echo Dot and Echo Plus on March 20th and 23rd between the hours of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM right here in the Aging Tree conference room. Space is very limited so you MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE. For more information about Computer Training or to have Onon-One Windows 10 Computer Training Contact Aging Tree at 866-320-8803 and schedule your training today.
Here are a few of my favorites’ ‘Alexa, play 1940 swing music’ ‘Alexa, play spa music on Pandora’ ‘Alexa, play Mozart’

VITAS Healthcare
INSIDE ADVISOR
What Does a Hospice Social Worker Do? When someone you love is referred to VITAS Healthcare for care near the end of life, that person becomes the focus of a team of professionals who provide medical, spiritual, emotional and psychosocial support. Two of those critical support elements—emotional and psychosocial—are the specialty of VITAS social workers. VITAS’ hospice social workers identify and meet the varied, often difficult needs that arise for hospice patients, their loved ones and their family caregivers. Social workers get to know patients and families across numerous situations and in multiple locations, whether in the patient’s home, a nursing home, assisted living facility or inpatient hospice bed.
Focused on compassion and dignity near the end of life, social workers ensure that the personal, cultural and religious wishes of terminally ill patients and their families are honored by other members of the interdisciplinary hospice team: doctor, nurse, hospice aide, chaplain, bereavement specialist, volunteer, and more. Hospice social workers, in fact, play myriad roles in a patient’s overall care. A “typical day” for a social worker is rarely predictable. During a single visit, a social worker might hold hands and share memories with the patient, comfort a spouse who is grappling emotionally with a loved one’s terminal diagnosis, check on the status of a home medical equipment or pharmacy delivery, ask delicate
questions that lead to important answers, and contact the funeral home on the family’s behalf about funeral arrangements. Every March, VITAS honors hospice social workers and the countless roles and challenges they encounter and solve in their pursuit of the best quality of life at the end of life. VITAS Healthcare is the nation’s largest provider of hospice solutions. For more information, go to VITAS.com or contact the VITAS Volusia/Flagler team at 866-759-6695.
At VITAS, the focus is on LIFE When a loved one becomes seriously ill, it can be difficult to know what type of care is best, or where to turn for help. VITAS can help. The VITAS interdisciplinary team manages pain and other debilitating symptoms while focusing on quality of life for the patient and his or her family. Find out more. Stem Cell History
INSIDE ADVISOR
Cell Regenerative Therapy (CRT) Cell Regeneration Therapy (CRT) is a novel treatment for chronic pain conditions, like osteoarthritis, and chronic wound management. CRT uses grafts made from human amniotic tissues, procured after a natural or cesarean birth, where no harm comes to either the mother or newborn. At a molecular level, the amniotic membrane and fluid contain the most basic building blocks for tissue development. In utero, these products help with fetal protection and development. During CRT, the same growth factors and cytokines that help fetal maturation serve to initiate cell division within the treated area. Proteins, amino acids, collagen and electrolytes also present
within grafts supplement cell replication by providing additional building materials required during the division process. For arthritic pain, these grafts lubricate joint spaces and encourage the growth of healthy, new cartilage. When treating chronic wounds, healing is facilitated by promoting revascularization, granulation and epithelial tissue growth at an accelerated rate. Although the healing power of amniotic tissues has been well documented, research in orthopedic and wound care is fairly new and still in phase I/II clinical trials. As research is still ongoing, CRT and other regenerative therapies have not yet been adopted as the “standard of care” for these
By Andrew J. Gleason, BSN, CCRN, NP-S. Marketing Director conditions. Unfortunately, this means these treatments are typically not covered by insurance. However, as preliminary data has shown the overwhelming benefits of these therapies, the FDA has permitted clinicians to provide these therapies to those who can afford the out-of-pocket costs and is currently looking for ways to fast-track the rapidly growing field of regenerative medicine.

Breathe Easy

Tips Combat Dryness in the Throat, Nose, or Mouth “If you or a loved one is on Oxygen Therapy, you may have noticed some uncomfortable dryness in the throat, nose, or mouth. This is a common side-effect for oxygen users, however, there are many helpful tips to help make the dry conditions much more pleasant and livable!
Dry Nose
Nosebleeds can happen frequently if you're using oxygen and often occurs due to the constant flow of air. To prevent bloody noses and dry nasal skin, you can use a moisturizing balm. There are even moisturizing
balms specifically made for dry nasal passages due to oxygen. TIP: For a natural remedy, try sesame seed oil. Sesame seed oil is a great, natural, anti-inflammatory!
Dry Throat & Mouth
A dry throat and mouth can often be treated using a humidifier. These bottles attach to your concentrator and force the oxygen through the water before delivery. This process will help add
moisture into the oxygen so you don’t dry out! If you are still experiencing dryness, we suggest a room humidifier to bring even more moisture into the air you’re breathing. TIP: Always make sure the water you’re using is distilled. This ensures you’re not breathing in any unwanted germs or particles!”

Let's Talk About Retirement Living
INSIDE ADVISOR
Are You the New Kid in School? Think back to your formative years. Were you ever the new kid in school? What did it take to make new friends and have fun with people you didn't know? It usually started with a smile, a friendly word and a bit of curiosity, right? If you have found yourself moving into a retirement community or in a situation where you need to make friends no matter your age, the same friendliness rules apply. Here are some tips for socializing and making new friends if you recently moved, find yourself needing more companionship or are entering a new phase of retirement. Is there something here you can incorporate into your friend-making strategy? 1. Explore. New friends aren't necessarily going to come knocking on your door, so RSVP to social events, go to the luncheons and
make an effort to get out of your four walls. Simply put, go where people are. 2. Be conďŹ dent. Chances are the people you meet for the first time are just as uncomfortable talking to strangers as you are. But, a friendly smile and an inquisitive demeanor are great tools to starting conversations. Wear your favorite shirt or apply your favorite lip-gloss, get out there and know that you belong. 3. Seek people with common interests. If you're a history buff, a motorcycle rider or understand anything at all about chess, look for people who enjoy the same! Whatever your hobbies and interests are, seek others who are doing what you like to do or have similar interests. Not only will it make conversation easier,
MARCH 2018 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
but activities fill up awkward silences better than anything else. 4. Have reasonable expectations. It's okay to feel alone, and it's okay to not be popular. Most of us thrive with one or two good friends, so have a reasonable expectation for being social. Being yourself and pursuing your interests, paired with leaving your safe space from time to time, likely will make you one of the more interesting people around. Remember: it takes a friend to be a friend. Treat others as you want to be treated – the golden rule is golden for a reason. Be interested in others and they will be interested in you. You are someone worth knowing. See www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/survivors/survivorchartred. html for a chart. Social Security helps secure your financial future by providing the facts you need to make life’s important decisions.

Eliminate Loose Dentures
By Dr. John A. Whitsitt, D.D.S., F.A.C.P. Millions of people around the world are missing enough teeth to require the use of a denture. Many struggle to keep their dentures secure, particularly in the lower jaw. If you have this problem, you already know about the embarrassment of slipping dentures, not being able to eat the foods that you love and the problems with denture adhesives.
Restore Your Confidence Stabilize Your Dentures
Dental implants can stabilize dentures and virtually eliminate many of the problems associated with complete tooth loss and wearing dentures. In fact, for those patients who have lost a significant amount of bone and lip support, a removable over-denture, which fits “over” the dental implants will often be the treatment of choice. Studies over the past two decades have confirmed the increased patient satisfaction resulting from this affordable treatment option. Benefits of dental implant treatment for stabilizing dentures, particularly lower dentures include: • Dental implant-supported over-dentures will prevent further bone deterioration caused by complete tooth loss and wearing dentures. • Implant-supported dentures are stable and comfortable, improving function and restoring a sense of confidence • Facial appearance can be improved restoring lost lip support and minimizing wrinkles • Biting and chewing capacity is significantly increased, improving overall health

Veterans Information
INSIDE ADVISOR
Mail Call: Ask 'ol Sarge' While the Veterans Administration (VA) recently has made great strides in the delivery of healthcare and monetary benefits, there are still a few mysteries that perplex the best of us. So, each month we consult our trusted resources to bring you answers to the most vexing VA questions. Send us your questions at customerservice@agingtree.com or call and you could be featured in Ask Sarge as well as and those selected will get a free jar gripper from Aging Tree.
Q: I am service connected for a knee issue and psoriasis. The knee brace the VA gave me wears holes in my pants and the skin cream they gave me stains my clothes. Will VA reimburse me for these items? Bill - Enterprise
A:
Yes! As a matter of fact, you can get reimbursed once a year for each condition! The rate for this year is $795.21 You have to apply by August 1st of each year. Visit your local Veterans Service Officer to apply.
Q: Is it true that my spouse continues to get my VA money if I pass? Zayne Barberville
A:
Unfortunately, that is not the case. However, there are two monetary benefits that a surviving spouse who was married for at least 1 year may apply for. The first, Dependent Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is paid when the veteran passes from something stemming from a service connected condition. The current minimum rate is $1283.11. The other benefit is Survivor’s Pension. This is available to widow(er)s of war-time veterans who fall underneath an annual income threshold and that have less than $80K in assets, not including the home and vehicle. Each situation is unique so be sure to ask a veteran’s service officer if this benefit is right for you!
Q: My friend is 80 and served in the military and is
entitled to medals. How do I go about helping him to get them? Wiley - DeLand
A: If ribbons or medals awarded
in service have been damaged, misplaced or stolen they can be replaced free of charge. This service is provided by the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Missouri. They can be requested online at www.VetRecs. Archives.gov. Or, if you prefer, you can send them an old-fashioned paper form (SF 180) in the snail mail. These forms are often available at local veterans organizations and always through state and county service officers. Be aware – a veteran should never have to pay to replace awards, discharge documents, basic personnel or medical records related to their service. These are all free services of the NPRC! 1. You may not need to file a tax return. Filing requirements depend on your age, filing status and total gross income. If you are single and your income (excluding social security) is less than $10,400, then you may not have to file. If you are married and your income (excluding social security) is less than $20,800, then you may not have to file. 2. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who qualify. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program also offers free tax help for taxpayers who are 60 years of age and older. To find a TCE site near you, call 888-227-7669. 3. Check your preparer’s qualifications and history with the IRS Directory of Preparers and the Better Business Bureau. Make sure he/she is available to answer your questions. 4. Good record keeping is important. It helps to ensure nothing is overlooked. 5. The best way to submit your tax return to the IRS is electronic (e-file). You get a faster refund and your return will be more accurate. 6. Choose direct deposit for your refund. Your refund will arrive in your bank account faster. 7. Remember that by signing your return, you become legally responsible for its accuracy, not the preparer. Check it over thoroughly. 8. Keep a copy of your tax returns and documentation for seven years. Older documents should be shredded. Provided By Melissa Trickey & Vicki Kizma, Trickey & Kizma Certified Public Accountants.
