We Love Our Kids

“ Growing up with a single mom I realized people judge you on your appearance. When kids feel good about themselves, they not only learn better, but they also develop a stronger sense of self-confidence. Sometimes we only need one person to believe in us. That's what I hope this event will accomplish for each person involved. When the kids walked in feeling unsure, it was incredible to see their confidence grow after each had a hair service. What a beautiful experience to witness!”

In 1998, Lovania LeCounte started a community event where she would give away school supplies to help relieve financial burden to her parents. I had volunteered for many years and saw a need for these children to have hair services. I thought about giving the kids gift cards. But, because of privacy and possible discrimination issues it was not possible. The solution I found was to offer a community wide event, called "We Love Our Kids," where any parent could register their child or grandchild and come to an event where every child attending would feel like a "VIP."

Local and state officials joined us in our cause, and we are thrilled to have made a beautiful impact on our community. This event is a testament to the power of unity and helping one another, showing children that people truly care and love them.

Our initiative aims to bring together hair and community in a unique way by providing complimentary hair services to children; including haircuts, natural twists, braids, and more. These services catered to children from ages three in pre-K to high school seniors, with a special focus on single parents, the less fortunate, and orphans.

This year marks our fifth year. It is incredible how 72 volunteers from three different states and 28 stylists and barbers come together to bless our community. We were able to serve 123 kids. Each child received a backpack filled with school supplies, personal hygiene items, shampoo, conditioners, combs, brushes, and more. We were overwhelmed with support from local businesses, and even had one of our kids receive the new edition of Nike brand Jordan sneakers!

The vision behind this initiative is to alleviate burden on parents by offering essential services like haircare, which can greatly impact a child's self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being. In addition to hair services, children also received free school uniforms and groceries, thanks to partners like IGA, Pizza Peddler, McDonald’s, Infinite Academy, Ballast Reality, King, Allen, Holmes, Gatlin, Donavan, Jones, Roberts Families, The Center Ministries, Plunder Box and many sponsors and volunteers.

Various vendors and volunteers offered additional services such as face painting, nail services, cotton candy, slushes, treats and more.

The event featured activities of braiding, styling mannequins, and enjoyment of delicious treats (waffles, cupcakes, candy, pizza, BBQ ribs, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried fish, and more). We brought together multiple local communities to make this event a greater success. Teenage sessions were organized to assist youths in transitioning from middle school to high school, and high school to college. Counselors from Coastal Family Counseling Center and Coles Counseling provided support to parents, bridging the communication gap and addressing emotional needs.

We ended the day with movie night for the entire family. We hosted a special screening of the movie "Inside Out" for children and their families. They enjoyed free slushies, popcorn, and treats, making the event absolutely amazing. The children were beyond excited and appreciative. I cannot wait to see what the upcoming year will bring for our community events!

Every year, we present awards and certificates of volunteer appreciation, but this year was particularly special. It was my first time awarding our "Heart Awards" to those who have been with me since day one, supporting the vision, and going above and beyond to help make it a reality. These individuals truly believe in the vision and have wholeheartedly said yes to supporting it. I am beyond grateful for the unwavering support of the best sponsors and supporters. I love you all!

Of the volunteers, there are eight that serve on my board and planning committee. This will be my first time to treat them to a full spa day. This luxurious experience includes a full body massage with hot stones, a deep tissue massage, a full facial, and a delightful brunch.

We Love Our Kids united the community to support and uplift the next generation, and we are grateful for everyone who contributed to making it a memorable and impactful event.

We look forward to continuing to serve and uplift our community in the years to come. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our children and create a brighter future for all.

Navigating the Balance: Boss vs. Friend

The hair loss industry is constantly evolving, and with it, the dynamics between leadership and their teams. One of the most challenging balances to strike is between being both a boss and a friend. In this article we will explore the delicate line owners and managers must tread to maintain balance in team leadership and growth, while fostering a supportive and friendly environment.

The Role of a Boss

The Challenges of Being Both

1. Conflict of Interest: When you are a boss and also a friend to an employee, it can lead to perceived favoritism. Other team members might feel that decisions are biased, leading to resentment and a decrease in team bonding and growth.

2. Be Transparent: Transparency in decision-making and communication can alleviate perceptions of favoritism. Ensure that all team members are aware of how decisions are made and that they are based on objective criteria.

3. Consistent Treatment: Treat all team members consistently, regardless of personal relationships. This creates a fair work environment and reinforces that professional decisions are made based on merit, not personal connections.

As a boss, your primary responsibility is to ensure that your team meets company goals. This involves setting clear expectations, providing direction, and holding team members accountable. You are also tasked with making tough decisions, providing constructive feedback, and sometimes taking disciplinary action. Your role is to lead, guide, and sometimes make unpopular decisions for the greater good of the company.

The Role of a Friend

Your friendships in the workplace can create a supportive and enjoyable work environment. Friends provide emotional support, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. In a healthy work environment, friendships can lead to increased job satisfaction, collaboration, and overall morale. However, the nature of your friendship is based on mutual trust, shared experiences,

1. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish and communicate clear boundaries between your personal and professional interactions. Ensure that all team members understand these boundaries to avoid confusion and maintain professionalism.

4. Develop Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence is crucial for navigating the complexities of team relationships. Being able to read, care and respond appropriately to both professional and personal situations can help maintain balance.

5. Prioritize Professionalism: Always prioritize your professional responsibilities over personal relationships. Knowing how to put your friendship aside in order to do what’s best for the team member to grow, the company to grow and the guests to be well taken care of is important. This might mean having tough conversations or making difficult decisions that could affect personal relationships.

Being a boss and a friend is not mutually exclusive, but it requires careful navigation and a high level of emotional intelligence. By setting clear boundaries, being transparent, treating all team members consistently, and prioritizing professionalism, you can foster a team environment that benefits from both effective leadership and supportive camaraderie. Striking this balance can lead to a more harmonious, productive, and satisfying team for everyone involved.

The Case for Small and Mighty Why Less Was More for My Business…and My Family.

In the world of owning a hair replacement studio, there is a prevailing notion that bigger may be better. Many owners strive to expand their space, increase their staff, and cater to a larger clientele. However, the truth is that "bigger is not always better" when it comes to running a successful business. For me, it was a difficult decision between downsizing or consolidating. I went from 12 chairs, nine private suites, and three multi-chair rooms in two locations (two states) to four private suites and five chairs in a single location.

Owners can quickly implement new services, adjust pricing strategies, or introduce creative promotions without the bureaucratic hurdles that larger businesses may face. This flexibility allows smaller salons to stay competitive, responsive, and in tune with the evolving needs of their clients.

The allure of a large studio was once enticing. However, I feel there is undeniable value in the intimate and focused nature of a smaller setting. From offering personalized experiences and attention to detail to fostering a strong sense of community and maintaining financial stability, small studios have plenty to offer both owners and clients. Ultimately, success in any industry is not always measured by the size of the company, but by the quality of relationships built, the level of service provided, and the passion and dedication that salon owners bring to their craft.

All the while this has allowed me to enjoy more time away from the chair and spend more time with my family and personal activities.

Prick vs. Pluck: Puzzle Pieces that Lie in the Follicle and Blood

As hair practitioners advocating for the good of our clients, we recognize that hair health is closely connected to overall health. One of the most effective ways to understand hair loss is to examine underlying causes. Comprehensive blood panels and a follicular hair analysis are effective methods to accomplish an increased understanding. You can pinpoint specific deficiencies and imbalances that may be contributing to hair-thinning and hair-loss to effectively treat it.

Why We Test: Elevated blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and reduce circulation to the scalp, negatively affecting hair growth.

4. Copper

Why We Test: Copper plays a role in the formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of blood vessels, nerves, and immune function. It also helps maintain the health of hair follicles.

5. Zinc

It is important to note that blood provides a 72-hour "window" of what is happening in the body, whereas a hair follicle analysis shows a much broader picture with 90 days of body health information. In terms of information available between the two, blood can be described as a "photograph" and hair as a "movie."

The following is a breakdown of the key blood tests and why they matter for hair health:

1. Vitamin B12 and Folates

Why We Test: A deficiency can lead to anemia, which affects the oxygen supply to hair follicles, potentially causing hair thinning and loss.

2. Iron

Why We Test: An iron deficiency can result in poor oxygenation, leading to weakened hair and increased shedding.

Why We Test: Zinc is vital for tissue growth and repair, including hair tissue. It also helps to keep oil glands around the hair follicles working properly.

6. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

Why We Test: TSH levels help assess thyroid function. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss by disrupting the normal cycle of hair growth.

7. Ferritin

Why We Test: Ferritin is a protein that stores iron and releases it when needed. Low ferritin levels can indicate iron deficiency before it shows up in serum iron levels.

8. Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy

Why We Test: Vitamin D is important for hair follicle cycling. Deficiency in vitamin D is linked to many types of alopecia which can lead to significant hair loss.

Hair Analysis (Pluck)

By focusing on regenerative hair and health, a hair analysis scan can provide

impressive results. By plucking a few hairs, you are able to gather up to three months' worth of data; offering valuable insights to recommend necessary lifestyle changes and suitable vitamins for each patient. You can examine the hair follicle findings to identify nutritional deficiencies, food intolerances, metals, and parasites. This comprehensive analysis allows you to develop individualized plans for each patient.

It is important that as hair practitioners we understand the significance of medical conditions such as "leaky gut" and the impact of food intolerances to accelerating hair loss. These factors, along with various deficiencies, contribute to a rising prevalence of hair loss among younger individuals. Indeed, we have observed a significant shift in patient demographics, with the 18 to 45 age group now outnumbering the 50 to 70 group.

As hair practitioners dedicated to the well-being of our clients, we do well to embrace an inside out approach to diagnosing and treating hair loss. Combining blood panels and follicular hair analysis offer a comprehensive view of a patient's health, providing critical insights into potential deficiencies and imbalances. By understanding that blood provides a snapshot while hair gives a detailed, extended view of health, we can develop more effective, personalized treatment plans. Addressing factors such as nutritional deficiencies, food intolerances, and gut health is vital for mitigating hair loss, especially as we see an increasing number of affected younger individuals. With these advanced diagnostic tools, we can empower our clients to achieve healthier hair and overall well-being.

It is a Balancing Act

Protecting "bio hair" while wearing extensions is a balancing act.

As a hair extension specialists, we have all faced concerns from guests if hair extensions will ruin their hair. The answer to this question is hardly a simple one. There are many variables, but the additional service we have the obligation to provide is care for their biological hair strand. Since 85% of all salon guests have fine or compromised strands, this care is paramount to providing a safe service for our guests.

Learning the Methods

While learning hair extension application methods, stylists will find that every company has a technique they believe is best for every client no matter hair texture and density. Unfortunately, hair extension applications are not "one size fits all." Just as the rules of hair color are often broken, the rules for hair extensions are as well. The safest hair extension technique becomes the one that fits the needs of the client and protects their biological hair most effectively. Learning several different applications will allow for the stylist to learn the reactions of the hair strand, which tells so much in the health of the hair.

One important skill obtained when learning several different application methods is noticing the differences of how hair reacts to the application. You may find that one technique does well at the scalp level, but then causes a high lift blonde’s ends to tangle or break off easily due to extra tension placed on the ends of the hair. Breakage of the ends is still hair loss, just in a different form. At the scalp level, you may find that one technique does not allow for a natural shedding process to release during the resetting of the extensions, causing too much weight on the biological strand. One technique may recommend a shallow application method, but the biological hair requires a deeper application to maintain a density for a match. Knowledge of different applications allows the stylist to take into consideration

all that was learned to effectively watch how the hair is reacting. A broader approach to application knowledge allows options in order to combat any stressors that may be put on the biological hair.

Protect the Investment

Any hair addition is a significant investment. However, it could be argued that the most important investment is the one that is a lifelong investment: Biological hair. There are products on the market that tout their effectiveness for softening hair extensions, drying extensions more quickly, and protecting the extensions. But to ignore biological hair that is "under the hood" of extensions is a disservice to the guest.

So, is it possible to have the best of both worlds? Can we treat the hair extensions while also treating the biological hair? In a word, yes. But as stylists we need to also think "outside of the box" as to what we are treating. These following areas of the scalp and hair are often forgotten when the "magic" of hair extensions happens for our guests:

Hair follicle and hair base: There is no application that involves zero tension on the biological hair. Therefore, it is so important to protect and strengthen the integrity of the hair follicle and base. Supplements such as healthy hair growth vitamins and DHT blockers help to nourish the biological hair from the inside out. This can provide a healthy environment for hair to grow and anchor the hair in place. Any time there is an environment for less shedding, there is an environment for less tangling, which helps the hair develop a strong base.

Scalp: There is a push in the industry to a more botanically-based approach for cleansing the scalp. In addition to effective cleansing, ingredients such as saw palmetto, biotin, niacin and panthenol can help to reduce scalp inflammation, and aid in providing a healthy environment for hair to grow and be anchored.

Compromised anchor points: There are areas of the scalp (such as hair near the hairline) that a guest may have a change in density, texture, or hair strength. Hair

products that specifically treat these areas may be necessary in combatting conditions such as traction alopecia.

Ends of the hair: Often, when a guest is wearing hair additions, the ends of the biological hair can be a forgotten area, especially when adding length. Heavy creams appropriate for a thicker denier found in the hair extensions may cause limpness and heaviness for the biological hair strand. The weightless property of hyaluronic acid is an amazing alternative that serves the biological hair and the hair additions, while also preventing breakage.

There truly is nothing more rewarding than providing our guests with a service that gives them confidence and a style that they have only ever dreamed to have. The "true magic" happens when the hair additions are removed, and the guest realizes that the service that you provided has also helped to treat their biological hair. Providing such care will build an immeasurable lifelong trust.

Navigating Your Exit Plan

So, you have had a fulfilling career, you are in your 50s and you are starting to wonder, "How much longer do I want to work?" Unfortunately, in our industry, many of these things are not taught. Most of us believe that we have to be behind the chair until we start collecting Social Security! This is absolutely not the case!

and training them in hair replacement typically takes anywhere from two to four months, depending on the individual. This training period allows you to start stepping back from the chair. It is crucial to inform your clients about what is happening and assure them that you will still be there every step of the way, albeit in a different capacity within the business.

Making Your Business Independent

So, how do you get out from behind the chair? Do you have your exit plan?

Deciding Your Direction

The first step is to decide in which direction you want to go. You want to start working for your business, not in your business. The initial steps involve finding someone already in your studio that you want to groom to step into your role behind the chair. Alternatively, you might want to hire someone new and teach them the services you currently perform. You can do this even if you are in a salon suite.

Training and Transitioning

In my experience, taking a mainstream hairdresser

Depending on the solutions you offer in your salon, this person will need to be trained in every aspect of the services you provide. Additionally, ensure that this person has good leadership skills, meaning they know how to handle client issues and work with people who are going through the emotional journey of hair loss. They need to match your personality and ethos.

Planning for Growth and Exit

Once you have put all of this into place, you can start looking at growing your business even more. This transition allows you to focus on the necessary things that you haven't been able to address because you've been behind the chair. As you move out from behind the chair, consider your next steps. Do you want to own your studio for another 20 years? Or do you want to create an exit plan?

To ensure the business could run independently of me, we focused on making our social media about the team or the person hired to take over my role. We started doing more videos about each stylist, their interests. When I realized I could be away from my salon for nearly a year and a half, doing consultations virtually, I knew the salon could run independently of me. This was a crucial step for preparing to sell my business.

Your Checklist to Getting Out from Behind the Chair:

1. Hire and train someone. Find the right person, train them, and ensure they have the right personality and work ethic to step into your role.

2. Evaluate your business. Look at your business and decide on your exit plan.

3. Rebrand if necessary. If your name is integral to the business, consider rebranding to ensure a smooth transition.

If you decide to sell your business at some point, and your name is integral to the salon's brand and income, this needs to be changed. When I owned my salon, Shanna Moll Studios, and I knew was going to sell in a few years, I rebranded. I realized that my name couldn't

5. Plan for independence. Ensure your business can run independently of you, which is essential for a successful sale or transition.

By following these steps, you can transition out from behind the chair and move towards a new phase in your career and life!

"We Are Family."

Two of the most challenging tasks as a business owner are keeping your team happy and keeping them together for years. Employee retention can be very difficult, but there are many strategies you can implement into your own business to improve team morale and listen to the needs of each member of the team. At Apollo, our top employees have been with us for 40, 18, and 17 years respectively. We could not have sustained success all these years without them. As cliché as it sounds, we truly are more of a family than a team.

Aside from obvious things like way-above-average compensation and treating people the right way, here are some of the best strategies we have learned to build company culture and retain our team members:

1. Surveys

Engaging with your team using a survey is a great way to let everybody voice their true opinions. Some people do not want to speak up in front of others or feel uncomfortable sitting down face-to-face to say how they feel. By sending a survey, each member of the team gets a chance to put together a thoughtful answer. You may learn more about your business than you ever anticipated! Some of the best questions used in our employee surveys are:

• What should we start doing?

• What should we stop doing?

• What should we keep doing?

• Is there anything that you do or are asked to do that you don’t understand why we do it?

• Is there anything you do that is a waste of time that could be cut out?

• Is there something the company could do for you to make your job easier, better, or more gratifying?

I love to write down all the answers from our surveys on one page to see if any answers are consistent across the team in order to see what answer stands out as most important or the most glaring amongst the rest. Putting all the answers together can help paint a picture of how your team thinks and feels as a whole.

Whether it is by time or finance, always be sure to invest back into your team as you would the company itself. Every week, our management team has a morning meeting to make sure we are all on the same page. We discuss: What is the focus of the week, what needs to be done, what orders we need to place, what problems we need to solve, and who is taking accountability for getting these things done?

Once every quarter, we meet as an entire team. We block off a couple of hours in the morning and together go out for breakfast. We have found that people are more responsive and engaged when stepping outside of the office to meet. We talk through our goals and our focus as a team for the next month, quarter, and year. Again, the objective is to give every member of the team a voice and to all be working together towards our team goals.

Financially, we invest back into the team through training and mentoring. Each year we set aside some funding for continued education. Whether it is taking the team to the yearly HairNow conference through the

AHLC, sending our managers to work with business coaches, or sending stylists to classes taught by the best in the industry; we are always looking for ways to learn and improve the business. It is empowering to your team to show them that you invest in them and want to see them grow.

3. Celebrating as a Team

Keeping a team together for years and years is hard. Co-workers often spend more time together than they do with their own families, so enjoying coming to work every day and the people you around are important. Take the time to celebrate each other's birthdays and work anniversaries. Show appreciation for people staying by your side year after year and let them know how much they mean to the business.

Something as simple as a thank you card and flowers on their work anniversary can mean the world to somebody, letting them know that you recognize their contributions and are thankful for their time.

As well, celebrate achieving company goals and milestones. We can never accomplish our company’s goals without the help of every member of the team. When we reach a milestone, everybody

should get the chance to celebrate and see that their contribution makes a difference. Maybe it's a team dinner, gift cards, or bonuses. Having a reward for accomplishing big goals helps everybody focus on the main task at hand, and helps the business grow more quickly when the team is bought into a common goal.

Creating a family-type environment in the workplace is not easy, but it is rewarding when properly put in place. Simple things like having a vacation policy and maternity leave policy in place help as well. The team should help take care of one another, respect each other, and work better together as a collective. Clearly stating each team member's roles and responsibilities helps with taking accountability and eliminating confusion. It is important to have everyone on the same page and know who is supposed to do what.

The Cutting-Edge Secret to Hair Restoration and Beyond

In the world of regenerative medicine and aesthetics, a ground-breaking innovation is capturing the spotlight: exosomes. These microscopic messengers, also known as extracellular vesicles, are transforming how we approach tissue healing, anti-aging treatments, and even hair restoration.

So, what exactly are exosomes?

Think of them as tiny communication hubs produced by various cells throughout the body. They can also be used in conjunction with a hair transplant procedure, similar to the way we use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to enhance the growth of the transplanted follicles. Finally, because of their ability to decrease inflammation, they can be a good adjunct in the treatment of scarring alopecias.

The procedure itself is relatively straightforward. Typically involving only minor discomfort and lasting about an hour, exosome injections allow patients to return to their daily routines almost immediately. Results usually start to become noticeable within three to six months. While not

everyone may see dramatic hair regrowth, most patients benefit from reduced hair shedding and a slowed progression of hair loss. Exosomes treatment is usually combined with other hair loss prevention strategies for optimal results; ongoing treatments such as medication and lowlevel laser therapy are recommended in conjunction with an exosomes procedure. Generally, we are recommending this as a one-time treatment, although boosters may be indicated in certain cases. This differs slightly from other regenerative medicine techniques such as plateletrich plasma (PRP) where treatments are needed at more regular intervals, such as every three months. The typical follow up after treatment is every three months for one year to track progress.

What is more, exosomes are well-tolerated by the body since they are not living cells and thus pose no risk of rejection. In our experience, they are considered safe, with no adverse effects reported.

In summary, exosomes are paving the way for innovative solutions in hair restoration and beyond, offering a glimpse into a future where regenerative medicine might be more effective and accessible than ever before.

Do not rule out broadening your search outside of your local area. You will have more choices, and thus a better chance of finding the right fit for your personality and your budget.

I would also caution you about hiring someone on "bargain" freelance websites such as Fiverr or Upwork. You might connect with a knowledgeable and responsive designer on these platforms, but you may also wind up with someone who will take your money, throw something together quickly (that may or may not work for your business) and then "ghost" you. Even though these sites do attempt to present legitimate designers, scammers are present. If you decide to use these platforms, read the terms and conditions carefully and do your research on potential freelancers before committing to spend money.

Don’t Rush the Process

Before you set your designer to work on logo ideas, invest some of your own time gathering as much useful information as you can. An up-front brainstorming session will save you time and money in the design process by narrowing the designer’s focus. You are relying on them to generate ideas and concepts. But first you need to educate them about your company. This may require doing some research of your own and asking yourself questions such as:

• What services and products do I offer?

• What is my company’s culture and style?

• What’s the atmosphere like at my salon? Sleek and modern? Cosy and neighborly? Trendy, or traditional?

• Who are my target clients?

• Which colors best represent my brand?

• What makes my company different from my competition?

Take a look at your competitors’ logos too. It will give you some ideas about what you like, what you do not like, and how to make your company stand out among them.

Keep It Simple

Think about some of the logos that you might remember the most: Apple’s apple, Nike’s swoosh, McDonald’s golden arches, the Starbucks mermaid. One characteristic that all have in common is simplicity. Simplicity comes with advantages.

From a branding standpoint, a simple logo is more recognizable and memorable. A simpler logo is more versatile to reproduce in a variety of media. For example, a complex and highly detailed logo will not always reproduce well embroidered on a shirt or apron; or when it is printed small on a business card or promotional item. A logo with many different colors may cost more to reproduce depending on its usage.

Make Sure It’s Scalable (Vector vs. Raster)

When it comes to making sure your logo will be usable across a full range of media, the design format matters. Without getting lost in too much "technobabble," graphics come in two varieties: vector and raster.

Raster graphics are made up of pixels. The clarity of the image is dependent on the number of pixels-per-inch contained in the file, called "image resolution." It is a vital component of image quality, especially when it comes to printed materials such as brochures, posters and billboards. More pixels-per-inch equals higher resolution, which results in better image quality and the ability to reproduce the image at larger sizes. You cannot copy your logo from your website, enlarge it up to billboard size and expect it to look as crisp and clean as it is on your site.

Vector graphics rely on mathematical equations, lines, and curves with fixed points on a grid to produce an image. There are no pixels in a vector file. A vector file’s mathematical formulas capture shape, border, and fill color to build an image. Because the mathematical formulas can be translated to any size, you can scale a vector image up or down without impacting its quality. For this reason, it is preferable to have your logo designed in vector format, so you can utilize it at any size in any medium.

This article covers some basic principles for development of a good logo, but there are plenty more. Additional advice and inspiration are relatively easy to find with an online search. The bottom line is that your logo is an integral part of how you build your brand to market your goods and services to potential customers. The process deserves more than just a "casual thought." Put time and work into it, seek the help of a design professional, and you will have a lasting and memorable foundation for your brand!

New Client Onboarding Excellence

Garde Bien was established in 2000 as a fullservice salon and spa. In 2011, it moved to a new location and downsized, focusing on combining salon and hair loss services, which has been a key factor in its success. Our team of four coordinators onboard and three specialists use their cosmetology expertise to address thinning hair. Early on we recognized the importance of prioritizing efficiency to handle the significant influx of new clients. As a result, we developed a multi-stage onboarding

process to manage our limited availability and attract desirable new clients, especially in the hair loss category.

Developing an onboarding system can enhance excellence in client sales and retention. We feel preparation represents confidence.

The stages of our onboarding system are:

1. Online questionnaire

2. Coordinator greeting

3. Phone consultation

4. Face-to-face consultation

5. Follow-up appointment

Each individual step is documented. All notes are stored in the respective client's software file for our records.

1. Online Questionnaire

After completing our online hair loss questionnaire, we start the onboarding process. Our coordinators will reach out to the prospect to address any details. Our questionnaire is designed to showcase our hair loss solutions, salon services, demonstrate our expertise, and highlight the range of solutions we provide. It is important to prioritize new client needs before scheduling by choosing the type of session and who (resource) to book.

If the initial contact is made by phone, our coordinators will begin the process by asking essential questions to ensure a proper booking. Our coordinators are friendly and supportive, aiming to establish confidence in our services. Many new clients prefer to also complete the online form on our website, which we encourage to provide more detailed information.

Our coordinators convey a welcoming and focused approach, providing helpful information about our services and assessing readiness for a session while generating excitement. The first step is for the individuals to tell their story and articulate their concerns and goals. We will collect data to simplify the process of scheduling a phone or in-person consultation. Our coordinators document information meticulously using Google Docs, which are shared among all staff members.

3. Phone Consultation (introduction of expert specialists)

Our coordinators may recommend a phone consult for a new client. During the 30-minute phone consultation, we want to build trust with our potential clients and gather detailed information about their concerns. This helps us determine the best approach for our in-person sessions. Many clients have been dealing with their issues

for years and have now decided to seek a solution with urgency. Our complimentary phone consultation helps clarify our process and pinpoints the detailed needs to improve the efficiency of the face-to-face session by isolating which staff member is best suited for their needs. It also allows us to make a positive impression on potential clients while attracting high-quality clients to our business.

We have limited appointment availability, so it is important to screen potential clients and inform them about the price ranges of our high-quality (luxury) hair services and products. This gives them time to budget and ensures they are dependable before scheduling an in-person appointment. This prevents potential embarrassment and allows for exploring affordable options from our services and products. Most consultations are limited to one hour but may be extended.

During phone consultations, we focus on gathering the necessary information to research options before meeting in person, allowing us to concentrate on selection and fitting during the appointment. We remind them we offer customization options, including cutting, coloring, and styling lessons. We ask for current photos to get started and attach to their file. In some situations, clients can book a new cut or style. Remember they are vetting us too. Virtual sessions are also an option.

We believe in explaining value before discussing prices when working with clients who may not be familiar with the various qualities of human hair and differences in caps and bases. It is crucial to educate them on the variety of hair solutions we offer, expertise in knowledge, years of experience, and impressive credentials of the providers. While we can't provide exact pricing without seeing the client, we can provide starting prices and ranges if they ask. Additionally, we can inquire about desired payment options and insurance coverage.

4. Face-to-Face Consultation Set-Up (checklist)

After a phone consultation, the initial uneasiness is gone, and the client is now relaxed and ready to focus on solutions. We prepare relatable sample displays and

easily visible accessories. We make sure to have demo pieces that are compatible and efficient for showcasing. For example, if a client has short blonde hair, we display a short blonde option for her to envision the final look. We also pay attention to details such as whether the client parts her hair on the left or right.

We ask or search Facebook or Google to locate additional photos. We present related color swatches, fitting caps, photos, and catalog views. We show a variety of photos to demonstrate customization before and after services. All this preparation instills confidence in the client and reassures them. Time and time again, clients appreciate our level of preparedness, leading to a confident purchase and ongoing relationship.

It is essential to maintain a good relationship with our clients. We encourage a complimentary follow-up appointment to foster continued connection. Clients are advised to wear and restyle their new hair at home to reveal focused questions before the follow-up. We prefer to schedule the appointment in advance, in one week however they may choose to come in later if they feel it's unnecessary. Reaching out with a brief phone call can help stay connected. This approach is essential for ensuring success. The follow-up appointment is helpful to avoid over-cutting from the initial appointment. It's also a great opportunity to review home care instructions. Hand-written thank-you cards are sent shortly after the appointment to show our appreciation.

FTC Announces Rule Banning Noncompetes

Today the Federal Trade Commission issues a final rule to promote competition by banning noncompete (agreements) nationwide, protecting the fundamental freedom of workers to change jobs, increasing innovation, and fostering new business formation.

“Noncompete clauses keep wages low, suppress new ideas, and rob the American economy of dynamism, including from the more than 8,500 new startups that would be created a year once noncompetes are banned,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan. “The FTC’s final rule to ban noncompetes will ensure Americans have the freedom to

pursue a new job, start a new business, or bring a new idea to market.”

The FTC estimates that the final rule banning noncompetes will lead to new business formation growing by 2.7% per year, resulting in more than 8,500 additional new businesses created each year. The final rule is expected to result in higher earnings for workers, with estimated earnings increasing for the average worker by an additional $524 per year, and it is

expected to lower health care costs by up to $194 billion over the next decade. In addition, the final rule is expected to help drive innovation, leading to an estimated average increase of 17,000 to 29,000 more patents each year for the next 10 years under the final rule.

Noncompetes are a widespread and often exploitative practice imposing contractual conditions that prevent workers from taking a new job or starting a new business. Noncompetes often force workers to either stay in a job they want to leave or bear other significant harms and costs, such as being forced to switch to a lower-paying field, being forced to relocate,

being forced to leave the workforce altogether, or being forced to defend against expensive litigation. An estimated 30 million workers—nearly one in five Americans—are subject to a noncompete.

Under the FTC’s new rule, existing noncompetes for the vast majority of workers will no longer be enforceable after the rule’s effective date. Existing noncompetes for senior executives - who represent less than 0.75% of workers - can remain in force under the FTC’s final rule, but employers are banned from entering into or attempting to enforce any new noncompetes, even if they involve senior executives. Employers will be required to provide notice to workers other than senior executives who are bound by an existing noncompete that they will not be enforcing any noncompetes against them.

In January 2023, the FTC issued a proposed rule which was subject to a 90-day public comment period. The FTC received more than 26,000 comments on the proposed rule, with over 25,000 comments in support of the FTC’s proposed ban on noncompetes. The comments informed the FTC’s final rule making process, with the FTC carefully reviewing each comment and making changes to the proposed rule in response to the public’s feedback.

In the final rule, the Commission has determined that it is an unfair method of competition, and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act, for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers and to enforce certain noncompetes.

The Commission found that noncompetes tend to negatively affect competitive conditions in labor markets by inhibiting efficient matching between workers and employers. The Commission also found that noncompetes tend to negatively affect competitive conditions in product and service markets, inhibiting new business formation and innovation. There is also evidence that noncompetes lead to increased market concentration and higher prices for consumers.

Alternatives to Noncompetes

The Commission found that employers have several alternatives to noncompetes that

still enable firms to protect their investments without having to enforce a noncompete.

Trade secret laws and non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) both provide employers with well-established means to protect proprietary and other sensitive information. Researchers estimate that over 95% of workers with a noncompete already have an NDA.

The Commission also finds that instead of using noncompetes to lock in workers, employers that wish to retain employees can compete on the merits for the worker’s labor services by improving wages and working conditions.

Changes from the NPRM

Under the final rule, existing noncompetes for senior executives can remain in force. Employers, however, are prohibited from entering into or enforcing new noncompetes with senior executives. The final rule defines senior executives as workers earning more than $151,164 annually and who are in policy-making positions.

Additionally, the Commission has eliminated a provision in the proposed rule that would have required employers to legally modify existing noncompetes by formally rescinding them. That change will help to streamline compliance.

Instead, under the final rule, employers will simply have to provide notice to workers bound to an existing noncompete that the noncompete agreement will not be enforced against them in the future. To aid employers’ compliance with this requirement, the Commission has included model language in the final rule that employers can use to communicate to workers.

The Commission vote to approve the issuance of the final rule was 3-2 with Commissioners Melissa Holyoak and Andrew N. Ferguson voting no. Commissioners’ written statements will follow at a later date.

The final rule will become effective 120 days after publication in the Federal Register.

Once the rule is effective (on September 4, 2024), market participants can report information about a suspected violation of the rule to the Bureau of Competition by emailing noncompete@ftc.gov.
