One common theme that we encounter when selecting articles for Aircraft IT is that, as part of an IT implementation, people usually achieve other improvements than simply speeding up their processes. Modern solutions encourage the removal of silo walls between different parts of the business in order to achieve single input of data which avoids inconsistencies between the data held in different parts of the business. That is tremendously efficient and a boost to quality. It’s also a good example of how, if you already understand your processes, the speed and capabilities of IT can present new opportunities to the business. In this issue, our case studies look at that potential for opportunity as well as the general value introduced by implementing the right IT system for your business.

For JAL Engineering Co., the implementation of a new IT solution not only improved long-range maintenance planning but also meant that they could leverage the greater insight to their business to manage more aircraft with less human intervention. For Airbus New Zealand, the arrival of a new ERP system has given better control over the

business and, with that, the confidence to continue to improve their regional presence in aircraft maintenance and management.

Ilari Neitola appointed as a new CEO Of QOCO Systems

In mid-march 2023, The Board of Directors of QOCO Systems was pleased to confirm that Ilari Neitola, the company’s Founder and current Chief Technology Officer, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Ilari has resigned from his role as a Chief Technology Officer and the Chairman of the Board. Current CFO and long-time Board member Lauri Jämsén has been elected as the new Chairman.

Central Mountain Air Rolls Out iQSMS for Streamlined Safety Management

In late March 2023, Canadian Central Mountain Air (CMA) announced that they had launched ASQS’ quality and safety management system, iQSMS, in their organization, further cementing their commitment to safety and excellence in the aviation industry.

The privately owned and operated Western Canadian airline specializes in scheduled and charter flights and allows passengers to seamlessly transfer to Air Canada and WestJet flights through interline agreements.

CMA implemented the iQSMS Reporting Module including the offline application to reduce reporting barriers and ensure operational continuity.

Northern Pacific Airways signs for TRAX eMRO software

At the start of April 2023, Northern Pacific Airways announced that it is finalizing its plans to launch a new low-cost long-haul airline on June 2nd with a fleet of Boeing 757-200 aircraft. While route plans are being firmed up, the airline plans to fly to destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York city and Orlando from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The airline is planning to attract passengers embarking on weekend breaks to Las Vegas and looking for a quick and affordable mode of transport. Flights will take just one hour, while driving between the Los Angeles area and Las Vegas clocks in at over four hours.

Northern Pacific has inked a deal with TRAX to implement the web-based eMRO software system to manage maintenance activities on its fleet. Implementing the eMRO cloud solution with its leading-edge technology will bring many advantages to Northern Pacific. Its users will work

Swiss-AS News: ATR signs a partnership agreement with Swiss-AS

ATR, the world’s number one regional aircraft manufacturer, and leading MRO software company Swiss-AS, announced in mid-April 2023, a partnership to further improve the digitalisation of airline maintenance management.

Through this collaboration — a first between an aircraft manufacturer and an MRO software company — the partners are working to improve and customize the integration of ATR maintenance data into the AMOS software provided by Swiss-AS to ATR operators. The aim is to enable airlines to digitalize their maintenance management in the most efficient way with a software tailored to their needs and operational constraints.

Currently, the integration of technical publications, provided by the OEM into the software solution is under the responsibility of the operator and often requires the usage of standalone systems and various middleware to manage data integrity and revisions.

ASQS Launches Risk+ Update: A Streamlined Approach to Risk Management

Rusada appoints Steve Lightstone as Director of Sales & Business Development

In early May 2023, Aircraft maintenance software provider Rusada, announced the appointment of Steve Lightstone as Director of Sales & Business Development wealth of experience in the aviation software industry having worked with airline maintenance and engineering operations around the world over the course of his career. In his previous role, Lightstone served as Vice President of Sales at ATP over a seven-year period. There he developed their ChronicX business to become the dominant market leader and supported various SpotLight© clients at major aircraft OEMs. Prior to ATP, Lightstone spent over 20 years in sales, marketing, and sales leadership roles helping businesses in various markets improve operations through innovative technology solutions.

Condor goes live with CrossConsense’s LBA approved Aircraft Fleet View 2.0

— a Native App that gives the user an always up-to-date view on the airline’s fleet status. It indicates AOGs, delays and other important information. It provides the right level of detail to be useful but not crowded with information. A new feature is the CAMO Release to Service. This enables a guided workflow involving the commander and the CAMO for releasing the aircraft prior to each flight. Recently, the LBA (German Federal Aviation Authority) granted Condor approval to use the CAMO Release Tool.

At Condor, Aircraft Fleet View will be used by pilots as well as by the management. It is meant for everyone who wants to get a general overview over the status of the fleet. Users who do not have the time or the knowledge to dive deeply into the MRO backend system will be presented with the most important information regarding a single aircraft, a range of aircraft or the whole fleet. Aircraft Fleet View sends push notifications, e.g., when CAMO in its browserbased application gives the ‘Release to Service’ or if an AOG happens.

Patrick Frey, Fleet Chief Boeing at Condor Flugdienst GmbH said: “The Aircraft Fleet View has been developed with a focus on the needs of a dynamic airline operation. It enables Condor to remove old fashioned, static PDF Technical Status Reports from the briefing package and replace them with an interactive live view of the aircraft’s technical status. The Aircraft Fleet View CAMO Release function enables a direct communication between Maintrol personnel and the flight crew. This ensures that all required maintenance documentation is available and checked prior to releasing an aircraft for operation. AMOSmobile/EXEC to bring efficiency and cost savings

AMOSmobile/EXEC has been rolled out to about 1,000 engineers and technicians at Etihad’s home base in Abu Dhabi, UAE with approximately 100 iPads available to be used in line and light maintenance operations, to update AMOS with executed maintenance work without the need to travel back and forth between the aircraft and the office.

This supports smoother and more streamlined processes and is a key enabler to Etihad Technical’s paperless maintenance strategy. The daily working processes and the efficiency of the engineers and technicians will drastically improve as they move from paper-based processes to a fully integrated collaboration with AMOS providing live data. Etihad is also eager to implement paperless operations to make AMOSmobile/EXEC deliver its full value and get the full benefit of its platform allowing the airline to go fully paperless: Mechanics will have the

possibility to open and close work orders from their tablet, track events, perform troubleshooting or report defects on the aircraft in AMOSmobile, ultimately improving efficiencies and productivity whilst ensuring they continue to improve safety and compliance.

As an ultra-low-cost company — “Lowest cost Wins!” being one of their mottos — JetSMART outsource most of their operation (including CAMO and maintenance) as part of their ULC strategy. To fulfil their business strategy of ultra-low-cost, AMOS has been recognized as an all-round solution that will support JetSMART to optimize their costs while keeping their rapidly growing fleet of 23 new aircraft, comprising A320 NEOs and CEOs, at the highest safety standards. Although their main base of operation is in Chile, they also have operations in Argentina and in Peru. A key benefit for JetSMART is the multi-operator maintenance program capabilities of AMOS, as all three operators access the same database, while this one source of data will facilitate the communication and collaboration of the three different operators.

Project scope

The initial go-live targeted the Peru operations, followed with Argentina’s and Chile’s operation running in AMOS from the end of February and beginning of March respectively. After a kick-off in June 2022, the project team focused on core business processes allowing JetSMART to

manage their planning, maintenance, engineering and procurement needs in AMOS after a seven-month implementation project. Thanks to the big efforts from the JetSMART staff in close cooperation with the Aircraft Engineering Services team from Lufthansa Technik which, after go-live, takes over CAMO services for JetSMART, Swiss-AS managed to migrate the full set of data that will allow JetSMART to smoothly operate AMOS.

As part of the AMOS Airline Edition, core APIs like Transfer Executed Flights and Transfer Workorder have already been implemented, allowing AMOS to receive flights and export deferred items to JetSMART systems and dashboards. With AMOS, JetSMART now owns and controls their data and can grow the interoperability of AMOS within the ecosystem of JetSMART. The complete data integration provided by AMOS allows JetSMART to have a complete, up to date, and real time forecast of maintenance events. AMOSmobile/EXEC will also be part of the project scope for future implementations following GoLive, allowing JetSMART to save on costs and paper thanks to optimized mobile processes.

The biggest part of the project was performed remotely, integrating a highly diverse team of people working in different time zones including Germany, Miami, Argentina, and Peru. There will be continuous support provided to JetSMART in the post-go-live phase to allow them to increase their adoption of AMOS (after having initially focused on the core processes) and to exhaust the full potential of AMOS.

Hosting on Google Cloud deployed with noVPN

In addition to the standard set-up, JetSMART have opted for Swiss-AS providing cloud hosting services with a noVPN solution. JetSMART is the very first customer of Swiss-AS to successfully go live with a noVPN solution, allowing JetSMART AMOS users to connect to AMOS from anywhere with a reverse Proxy. This is part of a hybrid solution, in which they also have the possibility of connecting to their cloud with a VPN as a backup. No changes were required on the JetSMART side to use the noVPN access. Since noVPN has been deployed, users are

experiencing a huge improvement in latency which causes AMOS to feel fast and responsive. This solution also enables fast deployment of AMOS to end- users’ clients (only a zip containing the AMOS client).

JetSMART: Founded in 2016, JetSMART Airlines is a South American ultra-low-cost carrier created by US private investment fund Indigo Partners, which also controls low-cost carriers like US airline Frontier Airlines, Mexico’s Volaris and Hungary’s Wizz Air. JetSMART’s primary base of operations is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, servicing Santiago, Chile. It also owns and manages JetSMART Argentina, an Argentine subsidiary with a base at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires. The airline commenced scheduled operations on 25 July 2017 with a service from Santiago to Calama, made possible by CEO and founder Estuardo Ortiz Porras. It now has domestic operations in Chile, Argentina, and Peru, and 79 routes throughout South America with services to Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and has carried more than 19 million passengers.

Pegasus Airlines Moves to Comply365’s Authoring and Compliance Management Platform

As Pegasus onboards new aircraft, ProAuthor will enable faster, more routine manual revisions and help the airline remain audit ready. Honeywell and Lufthansa Technik Enhance Collaboration on AVIATAR

In mid-May 2023, Honeywell and Lufthansa Technik announced that they are enhancing their collaboration on Lufthansa Technik’s digital platform AVIATAR to improve the customer experience in aviation analytics. Honeywell Connected Maintenance analytics are now being fully integrated into AVIATAR’s Predictive Health Analytics (PHA) suite, which will grow to more than 100 Predictors for multiple Airbus and Boeing aircraft types. Airline customers will benefit from AVIATAR’s unique interfaces to airline data, processes, maintenance and engineering systems, allowing a fleetwide management of multiple aircraft types.

Building on the long-standing relationship between Honeywell and Lufthansa Technik, this new long-term agreement is beneficial for aircraft operators on the journey to digital technical operations (Tech Ops). Airlines can take advantage

initiated in 2019 to eliminate paper-based processes in their aircraft maintenance. Swiss-AS was selected as the partner of choice to provide the most suitable solutions to help them reach their objectives with AMOS awarded as their maintenance engineering software.

24-month project coming to fruition

The cooperation between Swiss-AS and SunExpress started in February 2020 with the kick-off meeting and a couple of training sessions. Unfortunately, COVID started at this time, and the project was officially frozen for several months. Since the restart of the project in 2021, SunExpress has been implementing a largescale scope without the need for extensive project management and business consulting support from Swiss-AS, thanks to having experienced Key Users and Project Managers with previous AMOS experience.

After two years, the project went successfully live on the night of December 31st starting the new year off in the right way, and SunExpress successfully started to use tablets for aircraft maintenance operations, fully digitally without the use of paper.

Wide scope of AMOS usage to support digital transformation objectives

Besides integration with existing flight and finance systems, SunExpress decided for a large scope of add-on modules, including the full AMOSmobile suite (consisting of AMOSmobile/EXEC and AMOSmobile/STORES), as well as e-signature, becoming the first approved airline in Türkiye to go paperless. The e-jobcards are created and completed right from AMOS and allow the e-signature to be completed through PDF Overlay. This process allows the record keeping remaining entirely digital.

It provides the mechanics with direct access to the aircraft information on mobile devices through AMOSmobile/EXEC. The use of tablets enables a boost in the mechanics’ productivity by allowing more efficient transits and exchanges between mechanics and back-office during all Line and Base Maintenance activities, saving tons of paper usually created in the process of documenting all maintenance steps.

Including AMOSmobile/STORES in their scope of usage will allow SunExpress to focus on priorities when it comes to the operation of their stores, increase their cost efficiency by lowering losses due to surplus inventory and enhance process efficiency while taking in all the benefits from mobility. This is currently still in the testing phase at SunExpress maintenance stations.

SunExpress has joined AMOSeTL development team

Swiss-AS was also thrilled to welcome SunExpress as the newest addition to the development team of

the AMOSeTL (AMOS electronic TechLog) project. Alongside Condor, Luxair, Malaysia Airlines, El Al, Sideral, Cebu Pacific and three undisclosed participants, SunExpress becomes the latest airline to join this strategic partnership. From the end of September 2022, SunExpress took part in the definition workshops supporting the development and testing of the mechanic mode of AMOSeTL and will take part in the inflight testing phase that started at the end of 2022. Its large fleet of aircraft will offer an interesting opportunity for testing and defining the accurate processes to be managed in AMOSeTL to make it as efficient as can be.

SunExpress’ participation in the AMOSeTL project marks the last part of their ‘Paperless Aircraft Maintenance Operations Project’, as it will ultimately replace the paper-based Technical Log System. AMOSeTL will optimize logbook data management, reduce A/C weight, eliminate paper log expenses, decrease transcription and data handling errors, and enable airlines to ensure that A/C data are more accurate and available in real-time wherever it is

needed. SunExpress signed an agreement with Swiss-AS to use the AMOSeTL software, which is fully integrated with AMOS, after its release.

In late May 2023, Web Manuals, the world leader in digital documentation for the aviation industry, announced the launch of a discounted maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) package in partnership with aviation regulation compliance consultancy AeroEx GmbH (AeroEx)

Developed to support businesses in remaining compliant in the face of recent Part 145 regulation changes, the new MRO package will include the Web Manuals solution for editing, distributing and monitoring manuals, alongside its Part 145 compliance library and the cloud-based AMAS.aero compliance and safety management platform developed by AeroEx.

Volocopter takes off with AMOS

At the end of May 2023, Swiss Aviation Software (Swiss-AS) and Volocopter cosigned a landmark multi-year contract for AMOS, Swiss-AS’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) software. AMOS will be used to manage Volocopter’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft fleet worldwide. Seamless software integration will ensure continued fleet airworthiness, offer aircraft reliability monitoring and analysis, and act as an interface to Volocopter’s proprietary digital operating system, the VoloIQ. This is the first time Swiss-AS is collaborating in an urban air mobility (UAM) setting, a key development as Volocopter prepares for entry into service in 2024.

As the UAM industry pioneer, Volocopter is set to receive type certification (TC) in 2024 for its VoloCity, a 2-seater electric air taxi built for city use. The company will be the first to launch commercial services in Europe that meet the same very high safety standards that commercial airliners must satisfy. Besides product certification, a successful industry launch and future operations scale-up require a solid UAM ecosystem. Plus, eVTOL fleets in global megacities will need to deliver fast turnaround times to maximize vertiport and airport space and provide an efficient customer service.

AMOS excels at managing vehicle configuration traceability throughout its life cycle, a critical aspect of proper aircraft fleet maintenance. Further such aspects include component design/ purchase dates, installation/replacement dates, and total operating hours. AMOS will also monitor ground handling operations, deploy the relevant tools, and manage ground staff assignments. Ground technicians will use AMOSmobile/EXEC, a touch-optimized mobile maintenance solution for ‘live’ data streams. Further, artificial intelligence (AI) will enable reliability monitoring to improve fleet management efficiency. Meanwhile, Volocopter’s VoloIQ backbone will monitor customer-facing services like the booking process, as well as aircraft location and status, and battery health. Interlinking Volocopter’s air- and ground-side operations will create a fast, transparent, and safe fleet management system to support eVTOL operations scaling.

In this article, I’m going to share with you our experience using IFS Fleet Planner in JAL Engineering (JALEC). We’ll look at what it does and, importantly, at what benefits JAL Engineering has gained from using the new system. But let’s start by telling you something about JAL Engineering, the maintenance department of Japan Airlines (JAL).

JAL ENGINEERING CO., LTD. (JALEC)

Established in 2009, JALEC is 100 percent owned by Japan Airlines and has 4,000 engineers and mechanics with bases at Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) airports, Tokyo, as well as Itami (ITM) airport in Osaka. JALEC has certifications in 17 countries and regions and is responsible for the fleet management, engineering and quality management of 200 aircraft for four operators in the JAL group (JAL, J-AIR, ZIPAIR and Spring Japan) as their airline maintenance department. Also, JALEC is responsible, as an MRO, to provide services for the aircraft of more than 50 customers to-date — other airlines and the military in Japan. Those services include line maintenance, base maintenance, engine shop, component shop and training. JALEC’s annual revenue is about U.S. $1 billion.

Zero-Zero-Hyaku, 0-0-100

For Japan Airlines, Zero-Zero-Hyaku, 0-0-100, is a key objective today (figure 1). We shared the idea and what inspired it with readers in the March-April 2020 issue of AircraftIT MRO. Ultimate Goal ‘0-0-100’

The second Zero means that there should be no defects in flight and the 100, in Japanese ‘Hyaku’, means that there should be 100 percent on-time departures by every aircraft. These are very stringent targets that JAL has set for its operations and which JALEC must support. Some might regard this as impossible, but we simply see it as a powerful challenge. It means that we never stop considering and acting towards the achievement of this goal. As part of that, we monitor our progress and Figure 2 shows our performance against that target and the ultimate goal of 0-0-100.

As the figure says, it’s a magic word for JAL but it’s difficult to understand. The numbers 0-0-100 have a meaning. The first Zero means that there should be no irregular operations, no inflight engine shut downs (IFSD) and no parts departing

In 2020 and 2021, COVID ensured that travel conditions were far from typical but it can be seen that, prior to the pandemic, there was a downward trend in irregular operations and engine inflight shutdowns. With regards to inflight shutdowns, JAL has approximately 200 aircraft which means that there are 400 engines to be operated every day. But, in 2018/19, JAL never had to shut down an engine in flight; they achieved that part of the Zero-Zero-Hyaku objective at that time. Also, for irregular operations, the rate is decreasing and approaching zero.

We should also consider the defect in flight rate (figure 3).

In 2019, JAL introduced the Airbus A350 EIS and, from then, the rate of defects in flight has been increasing. However, most of the fleet are not A350, as there

are only about 16 of the aircraft in the fleet. Notwithstanding, the rate of defects in flight is steadily falling and approaching zero. Finally, parts departing from the aircraft (PDA) which is now decreasing every year, were increasing between 2017 and 2019, just prior to when the Tokyo Olympics were anticipated to have been held. The government was very focused on the PDA program because they opened a new route over Tokyo which generated an increase in PDAs but, since 2020, they have been decreasing.

How to achieve 0-0-100

This objective is a policy that shows us a direction but doesn’t offer a reason for the maintenance department. If you want to improve safety, you have to invest in aircraft, components and other materials which are very expensive which means, in turn, that you need to make a profit — a virtuous circle. However, if you cannot make a profit, you cannot invest and, therefore, cannot improve safety — a vicious circle. To achieve 0-0-100, we have to stabilize operations and improve efficiency; to do that, we have to increase revenue while reducing costs. That was JALEC’s motivation to introduce IFS Fleet Planner throughout our maintenance operation.

— which will be essential to realizing our objectives. You cannot rely on just the primary Plan A, but IFS Fleet Planner enables users to simulate various plans by changing parameters.

In figure 5.1 you can see a primary plan or Plan A which is the optimized plan.

This is a snapshot of JALEC’s actual operation. MRO X1, X2 and X3 means that those tasks are outsourced to certain MROs but we have to consider what if there was some risk in outsourcing to this country’s operation, hence the red box around those tasks. If some problem, such as a resurgent health problem, was to occur in the area, we might need to suspend outsourcing to those MROs; so, we need to have alternative plans. We can do this with Fleet Planner by quickly changing the parameters (figure 5.2).

Although this is just a simulation, it shows what can be done in a short time with Fleet Planner by changing the parameters. We can make a Plan B for if we had to suspend outsourcing to these MROs in which case, we’d have to change other plans for heavy maintenance. IFS Fleet Planner will make those other plans: also, we can introduce other parameters to easily make a Plan C or Plan D. That gives us the option to choose an appropriate plan depending on the situation. It is possible to confirm various data and the feasibility of a plan with outputs from multiple simulations which also helps to establish strategies and manage costs. This enables us to maintain a stable and efficient operation while avoiding risks which is one huge advantage to be gained from using Fleet Planner.

Yield is calculated as the planned time from the last maintenance event divided by the maximum required interval (figure 6.1).

Yield = Planned time from last done(Act) / Required Interval(Max)

increase the yield from, say, 95 percent to 96 percent, i.e., by one point, that makes it possible to release 33,000 man-hours for work that needs to be done in the year because maintenance cover is extended. That means that the aircraft can be utilized 66 more days in the year. So, if you increase this yield by more points, as shown in figure 6.2, you can utilize aircraft in the fleet more through the year and reduce the total amount of work that needs to be done. This is a very big advantage of using IFS Fleet Planner to manage the yield of the maintenance work. Of course, it depends on how to use Fleet Planner as we need to manage and adjust the plan based on this KPI, but if you use Fleet Planner as we do, it will generate more opportunities to gain man-hours and increase the utilization of the aircraft.

Innovative planning

IFS Fleet Planner can build a work package with multiple heavy maintenance tasks. Figure 5.1 shows an aircraft, 742J, with the visit title reflecting the package of maintenance work to be undertaken by HAECO in China. Fleet Planner can show that this 10C package is yielding 95 percent while the 10K package is yielding 73 percent. So, JALEC monitors and controls this yield as a KPI (Key Performance Indicator) in our operation.

Figure 6.2 shows actual data from JALEC’s operations.

Actual Yield will always vary because of the operational circumstances. JALEC monitors and manages Yield as a KPI, to optimize the cost.

In JALECʼs case, Fluctuations of Yield affect MH and Aircraft Utilization.

This is very easy to understand. IFS Fleet Planner is a Cloud-based system so that it can be used anytime, anywhere in the world. It’s easy to share information between team members. My team at JALEC have built a Pit-Board in the office to share various data including the Fleet Planner and other operational data such as weather analyses.

Using Fleet Planner provides the opportunity to improve the yield.

The actual yield will always vary because of operational circumstances, which was especially the case during the COVID-19 period. So, at JALEC, we monitor and manage yield as a KPI in order to optimize the cost in all cases. In the case of JALEC, fluctuations of the yield (center column of figure 6.1) mean that, if we can

Another one that’s easy to understand. Before we introduced IFS Fleet Planner, we made the heavy maintenance plan using Excel spreadsheets. That was time-consuming as a manual process with significant risks for human error. Any coloring to identify different tasks had to also be done manually and, if someone wanted to share information, they’d have to send an email with an attached file. It added to workloads and was a headache.

After introducing Fleet Planner, one person is able to complete the same volume of work for the 200 aircraft, where previously it would have needed two. Not only that, but also the business quality is improving, is more flexible and is taking less time. We can get information quickly and, if anyone is working from home, it’s easy to share with colleagues in real-time. It means that everybody is healthier and is happy.

IN CONCLUSION

The introduction of IFS Fleet Planner has empowered our people to be more innovative and the robust plans produced by our innovative planners give us confidence to manage the operation. Having a stable operation contributes to our passengers’ experience, improves how we work with customers and empowers us to continue to evolve. In other words, IFS Fleet Planner provides us with a route to realize that 0-0-100 target.

At the time of writing, IFS is developing additional parameters which JALEC has requested to further improve the capability available within our existing solution. We are increasingly realizing the potential that fleet planning engineers can gain from IFS Fleet Planner.

Atsushi Kita has worked in JAL/JALEC for twenty years, now mainly for maintenance planning and corporate strategies. He has supported customers as Director of Sales and Marketing of JALEC. Also, he has represented JALEC at ‘ATEC’, an association which is comprised of Japanese aviation companies, to develop and improve Japanese regulations working with the Japanese authority.

JAL ENGINEERING CO. (JALEC)

JALEC is an MRO business 100 percent owned by Japan Airlines with 4,000 engineers and mechanics working across three main bases. The business has certifications in 17 countries and regions and is responsible for managing 200 aircraft for four operators in the JAL group, as their airline maintenance department. Embracing ATA standards in data exchange

This column will focus on Air Transport Association (ATA) standards due to their massive potential in helping to revolutionize the way we manage and share data in the industry. I believe these standards will be a key element in streamlining maintenance processes and improving data exchange between collaborators such as airlines, MROs and OEMs. While the potential is clear, the adoption of these standards has been slow, mainly due to airlines’ systems not supporting them. In this article we will explore what ATA standards are, their current utilization, and their potential future applications. We will also discuss the challenges associated with the adoption and implementation of these standards, as well as their role in enabling sustainable aviation.

CURRENT UTILIZATION OF ATA STANDARDS

MAINTENANCE DOCUMENTATION: ATA standards simplify maintenance processes by standardizing the format and structure of maintenance manuals. This makes it easier for technicians to find relevant information and carry out maintenance tasks, and allows for efficient information sharing between airlines, MROs, and OEMs. However, many airlines’ systems do not yet support these standards, hindering their widespread adoption.

DATA EXCHANGE: As mentioned earlier, ATA Spec 2000 plays a crucial role in enabling data exchange between various stakeholders in the aviation industry. While its adoption is slowly increasing, there is still considerable room for growth in utilizing this standard.

WHAT ARE ATA STANDARDS?

Developed by the Air Transport Association (now Airlines for America), ATA standards provide guidelines and specifications designed to standardize documentation and data formats for aircraft maintenance and operations. By creating a common language and structure for maintenance documentation, procedures, and data exchange, ATA standards aim to improve efficiency and reduce costs in the aviation industry. Although the adoption of these standards has been slow, it is steadily increasing as the industry recognizes their potential benefits.

ATA Spec 2000 is one of the most widely adopted standards. It defines the

By standardizing documentation and data formats related to alternative fuels, electric propulsion systems, and other environmentally friendly technologies, ATA standards can enable more efficient information sharing and collaboration, driving the shift towards greener aviation.

However, the utilization of ATA Spec 2000 is far from universal, as many airlines’ systems do not yet support this standard.

CHALLENGES IN ADOPTING ATA STANDARDS

• Incompatibility with existing systems: One of the main challenges in adopting ATA standards is that many airlines’ systems do not yet support them. It does require significant investment in technology, training, and process changes to implement these standards.

• Resistance to change: The aviation industry is known for its strict adherence to established processes and procedures. As a result, implementing new standards can face resistance from organizations and individuals who are comfortable with existing systems.

• Diverse systems and processes: The aviation industry consists of numerous stakeholders, each with their unique systems and processes. Aligning these systems and processes with ATA standards can be a complex and timeconsuming task.

In conclusion, ATA standards hold immense potential for driving efficiency and supporting the transition to sustainable aviation. While their adoption to existing systems has been slow due to resistance to change, the industry is gradually recognizing their value, leading to increased adoption.

Before we delve into the case study here, I’ll share with readers some information about Airbus and Airbus New Zealand.

AIRBUS NEW ZEALAND

Airbus New Zealand is part of Airbus global, an international aerospace pioneer with some pretty high expectations and ambitions, including to produce the first zero-emissions commercial aircraft which they aim to achieve by 2035. The ZEROe concept is for an aircraft powered by hydrogen. As part of this project, Air New Zealand has partnered with Airbus. With over 125,000 employees and, as the largest aeronautics and space company in Europe and a worldwide leader, Airbus is at the forefront of the aviation industry.

Divided into three divisions Airbus includes: Airbus Defence and Space, Airbus Helicopters (the world’s number one helicopter manufacturer) and, of course, Airbus Commercial. Across Australia and New Zealand, Airbus Australia, our immediate Airbus division, operates 15 locations with 1,400 employees. Most of our work is in serving the defense forces in both countries, and supporting over ten aircraft fleets in the Australian Defence Force and New Zealand Defence Force as well as Airbus Commercial Helicopter sales within the region. We also provide a range of component MRO services to customers in the region including large aircraft engine and propeller overhaul and aircraft strip and paint. In New Zealand, the original business was Safe Air which was purchased by Airbus from Air New Zealand in 2015 and offers maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capability for military and civil airframes and engines. These

There is Whenuapai which is located on a military base on the upper North Island and serving the Royal New Zealand Defence Force; there is Ardmore which looks after commercial helicopter sales and has, in the past two years, enjoyed record sales in the New Zealand area; there is Ohakea which is also engaged with defense force support including a T6 Trainer operation; and, finally, there is Blenheim which delivers MRO support for the New Zealand Defence Force as well as covering a lot of engine overhaul and aircraft deep level maintenance of the force’s helicopters. Our future programs look towards us being a continuing strategic partner with the New Zealand Defence Force

SAP, which looks after financial and materials overview while we use Ramco for a lot of the maintenance flight logs, maintenance scheduling, maintenance recording, and materials and aircraft configuration.

Unfortunately, this means we are doing some double entry of data which isn’t great. We have been offered the IRIS program by Ramco that can automate data transfer between our two ERP systems but our internal governance is preventing this from occurring for the time being. One of the great features when we were going through our journey to using Ramco 5.7 to support the T6 program, was that Ramco provided all the training and set-up the RNZAF staff with access to the Ramco on cloud system.

Much of our appreciation of Ramco has been built on a long relationship that we have enjoyed with them.

Safe Air and the t-6 program

Our journey with Ramco started in 2006 with version 4 at Safe Air. At the time, most of our work was MRO related or held at Blenheim so we needed a solution that best fitted our needs. That solution was evaluated as Ramco. We stayed with the version 4 solution until 2020 when we had to migrate out of the system. As already mentioned, in 2014, the then Safe Air won a bid for the flight training program at Ohakea. As part of that program, we had to implement a new ERP system and decided on Ramco version 5.7 which provided us with everything that we required. Implementation entailed an initial program load, update of spares, upload of aircraft configuration, initial training and the building of maintenance schedules. In 2019-20, we added technical documentation capture, evolved packaged maintenance with multiple options of orders, tasks, subtasks and packages, and evolved aircraft configuration records to utilize more sub-subcomponents.

Figure 1 gives a representation of the initial modules, highlighted in orange, that were installed for Airbus NZ (Ohakea).

2021 Version 5.9

In 2021 we undertook an upgrade of the system. One of the mistakes that we had made previously was that we didn’t take a lot of the upgrades that were offered and so, when we got to 2021, some problems were becoming apparent with stability. We also had identified some expanded uses for which we needed appropriate updates, plus we needed some extra modules added.

We added a Work Execution Hub which enabled us to have a good visualization of all the maintenance requirements for the aircraft; gave us a very good overview and meant not having to switch between different screens to do a lot of the work, which improved our workflow. Fleet Operation Hub (figure 2) was another module that was added which has a very good display of aircraft availability.

We also updated our certificate of release which involved us in adding another certificate to the list.

One of the big problems that the Fleet Manager faced was having to regularly report to the RNZAF to show them what the aircraft availability was like and Fleet Operation Hub greatly simplified that. There’s a traffic light system that tells us exactly which aircraft are available. If any maintenance occurs, we end up with a change on that traffic light system.

Component Control and Configuration Control is done through the Component Records (figure 3) and is an easy display to show what outstanding components there are being changed: it has good visibility and was a great support for the planner in understanding what the configuration state of the aircraft was like when the aircraft was departing the maintenance check.

Facilities management was another tool that was added. Prior to this, facilities management, tools and calibration, etc. was being done on a spreadsheet which was not vey good. We needed to link in tools that were being used on the job to be able to understand where the tooling was used, especially if there was an out-of-calibration alert. Having the ability to effectively manage our tooling from a maintenance perspective and tooling use was a big step forward.

Shop Hub was another screen that was added (figure 4).

It enabled us to track a lot of the component work through the shops. If we remove a faulty component off the aircraft, we can send it straight into an ‘unserviceable’ warehouse where the option to send it right on to the shopfloor for repair will appear and automatically create an entry for us to carry out that maintenance.

Tech Records and Engineering Hub helped address one of the issues that we had early on which was that, with a lot of the engineering change requests, if there was something that we needed to defer maintenance wise, we were capturing a lot of that data just as a PDF in the system. That evolved later with the use of the Engineering Hub which had an actual workflow so that you could see the engineering requirement and then, of course, all of the workflow to see it signed-off. That was a big step forward for us.

Finally, the Dent & Buckle module. This was added at the RNZAF’s request. Early on and right up until recently, a lot of this work was being carried out with just marking all aircraft dents on graph paper.

Something else that Ramco did that worked out very well for us is that, during the system change, they enabled us to bring the RNZAF on as part of the journey, bring them into the system and give them access to views of what we were using so that they could see exactly what was going on the whole time.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT AND THE FUTURE

We’re now at a point where we can evaluate how the whole program has gone. There were a number of pros that we have identified and appreciated as part of the project. These pros included weekly contact with our Ramco project manager and trainer, and an engaged workforce who were striving to learn how to do things better, plus the understanding that, while the basic system is easy to use, to excel, we needed to work on configuring the system.

The future we see as moving to implement Mechanic Anywhere and Touch Screens Apps which Ramco offers but we haven’t yet implemented. There’s also Authorisations Management. Furthermore, other Airbus sites in Australia are now looking to move from their current ERP systems and Ramco is one of the systems that they are considering.

Transformation needs transformation

AConference — EMEA in Amsterdam, I am struck by how much this community seeks digital modernization and change yet how much we remain the same. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Let me explain.

as were the above transactional systems. In 2021 and 2022, my keynote at this Aircraft Commerce conference series focused on inheriting the digital thread, which is already very mature in the manufacturing space for aircraft and engines. This requires a different mindset, where data is the common denominator when transfers are taking place between and among the OEMs, operators, suppliers, regulators, owners or lessees, and MROs. However, transactions using documents are still prevalent. In other words, creation of data transactionally is still the norm rather than a philosophy of inheriting data. Please note that I am deliberately not saying that Blockchain is the answer because it means different things to different audiences in the context of this topic. Yet, data threads, digital twins, digital threads, blockchain etc. are not quite yet a common language in this community.

Similarly, in 2023 (and 2024), my keynote is/will be focused on the Center of Excellence (CoE) for IT in the operations space. Since 2019, we at ICF have acknowledged that more than 75% of the world’s airlines are using mature software applications which are still being developed and maintained by vendors. Therefore, the bigger issue is adoption of any in-situ technology where business processes are not enabled in an optimal manner. While the independent MRO community is still somewhat behind — most using homegrown applications — this adoption adage still applies. Especially now, where technical staff constraints exist across the aviation ecosystem and valuable institutional knowledge on using software applications has been lost. Here also, there is a marked absence of DAPs or Digital Adoption

Platforms. Of course, the idea of CoEs has to take hold before the need for a DAP may be realized. Specific to MRO IT, the management of aircraft and engines as assets through configuration control and maintenance programs are not grossly dissimilar to ITSM (IT service management). Over the past three to five years, we have seen applications like ServiceNow and Salesforce accelerating a larger presence in asset management and the operations arena. These are just two examples of Low-Code/No-Code (LCNC) platforms making software engineering simpler. LCNC platforms enable practically anyone to develop software without traditional coding. Such programming environments have great potential because they allow people to implement their ideas into digital solutions with limited or no software development skills. This essentially gives business users more flexibility and empowers them with creating faster solutions to meet their needs. They are known as citizen developers. Citizen developers have arisen for several reasons. One reason is that IT departments may take too long to develop a business app. Another reason is that IT developers do not have the requisite subject matter expertise to build the

business app for a specific purpose. Interestingly more than 60% of airlines which already have mature MRO IT platforms also have ServiceNow, Salesforce and other LCNC applications, and yet LCNC platforms, conversations and approaches are also markedly absent from this community.

To conclude, while the search continues for optimal enablement of business functions with technology, we would collectively do better not to limit our spaces but rather to expand and acknowledge the changing landscape, inside out and outside in. We may be surprised at what we will find.

John Warren has been in the aviation industry for nearly 40 years and holds a BBA in computer science from the University of New Mexico. For more than 38 years, he has served as the Executive Vice President over the M&E division, IT, and QA at Ultramain Systems. Mr. Warren is the Chief Architect of ULTRAMAIN.

Aircraft IT: How did Ultramain Systems get started?

JW: ULTRAMAIN® was first developed in 1980 with the goal of providing best practices and efficient operations to the aviation industry. Since that time, the business has undergone several technology enhancements to ensure we continue to provide the industry and our customer base with a best-in-class, integrated, comprehensive and easy-to-use system.

JW: A fundamental belief that aviation software serves more than a utilitarian purpose. Everything we do should help the industry be more efficient, reduce costs, and improve compliance.

Aircraft IT: What has Ultramain Systems’s greatest business achievement been to date, and why?

JW: It would have to be the leadership role that we have played in paperless operations. Paperless has been promised for decades but no-one put together a comprehensive end-to-end solution that allowed operators and third-party maintainers to get there. Ultramain changed that with ULTRAMAIN ELB™ and ULTRAMAIN Mobile Mechanic™. Ultramain has been in the paperless business for a long time. Today, when you look at the landscape of vendor offerings, everyone is touting paperless offerings.

Aircraft IT: What have been your disappointments and what have you learned from them?

JW: We were surprised and disappointed at how long it took the industry to recognize the advantages of paperless operations. Today, due to the lack of manpower, operators and maintainers are seeking out paperless solutions as fast as they can.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Ultramain Systems does for aircraft maintenance customers?

The central theme of this article will be to show readers the case for AI Driven techniques to enhance data integrity and visualize the commercial impact of airworthiness data prior to taking decisions about an Aircraft, Engine or a Maintenance Visit. But let’s start by talking about the importance of data exchange platforms and financial twins in a landscape where profit margins are challenged by Supply Chain and Labor price spikes.

A DIGITAL FINANCIAL TWIN — FINTWIN

There is a lot of focus on predictive maintenance and digital twins these days whereas in reality, during the course of the pandemic, very little was being done to build tools that used the underlying airworthiness and maintenance data of an Aircraft, Engine or Component to build financial / commercial profiles. Our question was: “how can one visualize the commercial impact of a decision being taken about an Aircraft or an Engine before taking it?”. So, we are going to look at a digital financial twin ‘Digital FinTwin®’ (figure 1) which can offer insights with financial implications of decisions.

W hat is a Digital Financial Twin?

A Digital Financial Twin allows you to transform the integrity of your Maintenance and Airworthiness Data and convert them into commercial insights It will help visualize the commercial impact of your decisions before you make them - i.e. an Asset trade, an upcoming Shop Visit & Build Goal, Scrap Rates, TAT risks, Redelivery risks etc.,

A Digital Financial Twin (Digital FinTwin®) allows you to transform the integrity of your Maintenance and Airworthiness Data and convert them into commercial insights. That then begs the question, what is integrity? For many businesses, data is held in a variety of sources (Excel sheets, scanned PDFs, CMS, MIS, M&E / MRO systems) across departments. So, the first step is to make sense of the data because, only if you can make sense of the data can you apply financial insights on it. That is what a FinTwin® can power. It enables you to understand or realize the commercial impact of decisions before they are made, i.e., an asset trade, an upcoming shop visit, scrap rates (how much will it make, what will be the cost?), TAT risks, redelivery risks etc.

How data science enables the Digital FinTwin®

Let’s start with an opportunity statement focusing on how the industry can achieve Return on Investment (RoI) using such data platforms powered by the FinTwin® (figure 2).

• Maximizing Residual Lives of Components, Minimizing TATs, Visualizing Costs

When dealing with unstructured data, it is important that any data model being built is Asset-type specific. This means that the model recognizes the nuances of an A320, or a B737 or a CFM56-5B or a V2500 when creating commercial profiles of each Asset. The fundamental principle to this is what the world is talking about today — Large Language Models. Large Language Models tuned to Aviation and Asset specific semantics power the engine that processes large streams of unstructured data that an Aircraft or Engine carries as part of its historic maintenance and airworthiness profiles. This is crucial in achieving accuracy when making predictions around Residual Lives, Redelivery Risks, Maintenance Cost Forecasts, Shop Visit Work Scope levels to help visualize commercial impact of decisions around a lease or a tear down, or profitability margins of an incoming Aircraft or Engine maintenance visit.

Paper and metal

The metal has value only when the paperwork supports it: the back-to-birth paperwork related to the metal is very important. That is exactly where a context driven OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is needed to extract only the data that is relevant for the Aircraft or Engine in place. Extraction of this data is followed by a set of rules inherent to the Aircraft or Engine type to check for

sanity around LLP lives, applicable ADs, Configuration completeness, statuses of ARCs that are crucial to ascertaining value and mitigating risks during trades.

other related parameters (operational, environmental, technical).

This further assists other departments — e.g. Supply Chain — to plan for procurement in case scrap rates are accurately predicted prior to engine arrival. With the supply chain TAT constraints today, this can be a valuable cost saving measure that the FinTwin® can power.

An extension of this use case allows the FinTwin® to help procurement and inventory cost savings through enhanced AOG procurement metrics, smarter stock level management to minimize inventory holding costs and Asset ground times.

CALCULATING REMAINING USEFUL LIFE

An LLP status report typically shows utilization of LLPs across thrust ratings and shows remaining useful life based on cycles limit by LLP, and thrust rating minus cycles accumulated. But trained data sets with reliability models can help gauge the impact of environment, thrust rating, derate, EGT margin and other parameters on the failure rate and an accurate calculation of the remaining useful life.

In this image is an example of where data is being extracted from EASA Form 1. Models are trained not only to recognize forms and fields but also to run rules inherent to the Asset type to identify inconsistencies before the data is imported for further analysis.

When the extraction is complete, behavioral profiles are created to continue the commercial impact journey against relevant use cases. For example, against an engine, trained historic data sets can help complete back-to-birth build gaps by mapping equivalent profiles of Engines that have similar age, utilization profiles, thrust rating and operational environments among other factors.

For an Engine MRO, this can be valuable to predict work scope levels of incoming Engines prior to arrival based on limited or exhaustive data sets. This is crucial in an era of fixed price contracts where NTEP limits can be set and simulated by the FinTwin® to ensure maximum realization of profit margins before slot commitments. The process extends through Gate 0 to save time and effort while inducting an engine and monitors risks and suggests mitigation measures (swaps, exchanges, outsourced repairs, priority swaps through advanced planning and scheduling) to stick to the profitability KPIs.

This is powered through Aviation semantic layers on top of language models that have processed and benchmarked shop visit reports by engine type and

The curved line is the Failure Rate Curve. The start of that curve on the left is for manufacturing defects. There is a threshold for that so that, when those defects have been fixed, one expects that, once you cross that threshold, the component will have a normal life. Given that there is wear and tear on that part throughout its usage, the failure rate towards the end of its life exponentially increases because no further repairs are possible. This is what the FinTwin® models, using the data which has been extracted.

The FinTwin® computes the cost related to these factors. Factors around macro-economics, inflation rate and interest rates are taken in to account when projecting costs in the short, medium and long terms. KeepFlying® has already published a paper where we have compared deep learning models with the models that we use which can accurately predict the costs and cashflows against Assets. The feature with deep learning models is that they are data hungry, but there are some mathematical models which can resolve this.

Here is an example of one such algorithm, the Dynamic Mode Decomposition, shown below figure 5.

How can Data Models improve?

The

In Bayesian Inference you have a prior assumption, observe what is actually happening and, based on that observation, you update your prior assumption. The main goal is that you take this data and provide the commercial financial impact of trade and maintenance visit decisions. All this is possible because of deep data which is being handled. To handle this data, given the sheer scale at which we are working and the sensitivity of the data we are using, there must be data governance and data privacy aspects to make this whole data modelling in practice.

DATA GOVERNANCE

We know that whatever data we generate will have a dollar value so, when you’re creating terabytes of data, what really matters is the governance of that data to gain full advantage of it. (figure 7).

The Preamble : Data Governance

Data governance is the process of managing the availability, usability, integrity and security of the data in enterprise systems, based on internal data standards and policies that also control data usage

It also essentially means putting the right technologies, policies, and people in place to ensure accuracy, quality, and security for massive sets of data.

Basically, it is used in fluid dynamics to simulate flow around an airfoil. This can be extended for inflation rates and interest rates, time dependent systems which flow into the future.

All of this is based on historic data and current projections but what about when an anomaly sets in? This is mitigated and improved by a particular aspect known as Bayesian Inference (figure 6).

Data governance is the process of making your data available to your consumers in a secure way while maintaining data integrity and privacy. There is a need to create a policy or process which helps you to manage your data efficiently and securely. The reason why data governance is of importance to an organization, especially in the aviation domain, can be seen through these few highlighted problems (figure 8).

Familiarize: Data Governance

The first problem is that, when you’re creating huge amounts of data and you must store it in a location but don’t have any management tools or anything to organize it: that creates a Data Swamp. The data is just lying there and not being leveraged for any useful purpose. What is needed is a proper policy to manage and use this data and that is one example of where data governance is needed.

The second problem can be that, in any organization, you create data in one business unit but when it’s passed to another business unit, they don’t understand that data because there is no shared knowledge of it. That is a problem that many industries face. You need a shared knowledge between business units to be able to share the data vision. If there is no policy, it will be difficult to consume the generated data. This is amplified by the effect that supply chain and labor challenges have in Aircraft & Engine Maintenance profitability.

Another problem is that there are a lot of acronyms in aviation and it’s not possible for a human or a system to understand every acronym. So, a proper definition of those acronyms should be in place.

Each country or region will have compliance and data residency laws associated with it. You need to adhere to those laws. Data governance enables us to be compliant with such laws.

Figure 9 shows results from an interesting survey conducted with multiple organizations and their employees. What came out top are security of data, data quality and data governance.

There are multiple ways in which data governance can be implemented but what we are trying to project here is one of the best architectures called Data Lakehouse architecture (figure 10).

It’s a specification using which data governance can be implemented. But before looking at Data Lakehouse, we need to understand a few traditional architectures. The traditional one is a relationship Database where you can store and work on structured data. However, it does not have data ready for analytics applications or reporting applications. To solve that issue, the Data Warehouse concept was devised which still stores structured data, but it also supports analytics and reporting solutions with data that can be consumed by them readily. But still there is a problem which is that it can only store structured data, not unstructured data. Unstructured data is when systems generate different types of data and formats all of which have knowledge in them. We cannot just rely on structured data alone. To store structured and unstructured data the Data Lake concept was devised which is a storage system where you can dump all your structured and unstructured data which is then immediately available for data science models and analytics solutions for consumption. The problem with a Data Lake is that, as with a Data Swamp, you can dump all the data in it but there are no tools to manage it.

Considering all of this, a new concept was devised incorporating the best of Data Lake and Data Warehouse. It was named the Data Lakehouse architecture.

Data Lakehouse: Simplicity, Flexibility, and Low Cost

advantage is that a governance layer has been introduced in the Data Lakehouse. It is not present in either a Data Warehouse or a Data Lake. With the Data Lakehouse, you can plug in a governance layer, and, in an automated manner, you can manage your data. Another advantage offered by Data Lakehouse is that it provides scalable metadata handling. For every data in a Data Lakehouse, there will be scalable metadata layers which provide more insights on the data. Any processes that work on such data, such as artificial intelligence or data science models, can work on it and provide meaningful insights. The Data Lakehouse approach is designed to be faster than Data Lake.

Delta Lake is one of the implementations of Data Lakehouse architecture which we would like to highlight.

It also helps the streaming and batching of real time data. Systems and algorithms can consistently work on such data. Another important

Figure 12 shows all the existing Data Lake systems at the bottom. On the layer above that, Delta Lake has been applied. The data that is streamed into Delta Lake comes out in a well-structured format which various analytics and machine learning applications can use. What you can see in the middle is how the Deta Lake manages data in three tables; bronze, silver and gold. So, whenever data is

streamed into the system it goes into the bronze table as raw data with nothing having been done to it. Then transformation and cleanup logics are applied to remove unwanted data, fill out the missing values, etc. and that is when we get the silver table. To understand gold table, let’s consider an example where you have multiple customers and are creating multiple silver tables from each customer’s data. Now, all that is aggregated, and a structure is created that’s called a knowledge structure. The knowledge structure doesn’t know what each customer has put in, it has just gained the knowledge using all customer data tables. Now, we have clean, fulfilled knowledge data ready for consumption and assisting in data governance with good quality data.

The governance layer is provided by some of the tools which can be plugged in to the Delta Lake to achieve a governance layer. A few examples are shown in Figure 13. One of the tools is Unity Catalog provided by Databricks which we would like to highlight. It provides a central console where you can look at your data lineage, see what processes are happening, plus on your data. It also provides granular level control where you can provide access control at each layer. Governance policies you want to use can be applied on the data using data governance tools. It also assists in reducing Data swamps as we have more insights on data using governance.

Having covered all this, the most important part is data privacy. We won’t go very deep into data privacy but here are a few ideas on how data privacy can be achieved (figure 14).

Data Privacy

Regional Data segregation. Anonymization for ensitive information. Homomorphic ryption on data by models. Differential privacy algorithms.

One thing is that, even though there may or may not be any regional data residency laws, you should always try to segregate your customer’s data regionally. It improves performance due to proximity to customer location and also gives confidence to the customer that their data is not shared with other customers. This is one of the simplest ways of achieving data privacy.

Another point is that all your privately identifiable data should be anonymized. One of the approaches called homomorphic encryption can be used for this purpose. It is a concept where algorithms can work on encrypted data without decrypting it which ensures that the algorithms do not know about the personally identifiable data they are working on. This gives confidence to the customer that their data is private.

Another approach growing in popularity is Differential Privacy where noise is purposely added to the data. What this achieves is that, even though we’ve put noise, Differential Privacy algorithms ensure that we’re getting the same output as with no noise. It’s like traditional radio systems where, if you tune to a

dial a bit and you’ll still be able to interpret the output but with some additional noise. That’s differential privacy. Data privacy is very relevant to aviation data too. The Differential Privacy approach can achieve a good level of data privacy. We also need to discuss data exchange ecosystems. Aviation is one of those industries where despite technological advancements when it comes to flying, a lot of the maintenance and records keeping processes are still very manual and laborious. Despite efforts by ATA, AWG and IATA to come up with strategies to digitize these processes, we’ve seen various levels of adoption from simple CMS tools all the way to Tier-1 predictive tools like Skywise, Aviatar and GE Predix. Making sense out of unstructured data to help make maintenance and commercial decisions is where AI tools can play a great role in easing the burden of labor heavy functions.

ATA Spec standards (Spec2500, Spec2400 etc.,) are some of the standards which are available to standardize aircraft data. All the data of a particular aircraft can be presented in relevant ATA Spec formats which can be easily consumed by multiple systems. This is one of the ways you can achieve data

consistency across an organization. Having covered the importance of aviation tuned language models, security first data driven platforms, it is down to the sector to make data management arrangements that leverage the most and most useful value out of their data in the most secure ways possible.

Our CEO, Mr. Frederic Ulrich, originally destined to work for a European Agency as a developer, unexpectedly received a call from the CEO of Mont Blanc Helicopters, who had heard of his developer skills. Initially approached to address an issue regarding their finance software, Mr. Ulrich ended up redeveloping an entirely new software solution for the company. This experience ignited his passion for aviation, leading him to establish ADSOFTWARE, a dedicated software company

Since its inception, ADSOFTWARE has grown rapidly, attracting numerous aircraft companies, developing CAMO and MRO solutions and more.
