MEDICAL PROCEDURES

Gastrointestinal CONSULT ANTS

Capsule Endoscopy

Examines the lining of the middle part of your gastrointestinal tract.

Why is capsule endoscopy done?

Capsule endoscopy helps your doctor evaluate the small intestine. This part of the bowel cannot be reached by traditional upper endoscopy or by colonoscopy. The most common reason for doing capsule endoscopy is to search for a cause of bleeding from the small intestine. It may also be useful for detecting polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers, and tumors of the small intestine.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

An empty stomach allows for the best and safest examination, so you should have nothing to eat or drink, including water, for approximately twelve hours before the examination. Your doctor may ask you to do a bowel prep/ cleansing.

Tell your doctor in advance about any medications you take, including:

Iron

Aspirin

Bismuth subsalicylate products

Other over-the-counter medications

Discuss any allergies to medications as well as medical conditions, such as swallowing disorders and heart or lung disease.

Tell your doctor of the presence of a pacemaker or defibrillator, previous abdominal surgery, or previous history of bowel obstructions in the bowel, inflammatory bowel disease, or adhesions.

What can I expect during capsule endoscopy?

Your doctor will prepare you for the examination by applying a sensor device to your abdomen with adhesive sleeves (similar to tape). The pill-sized capsule endoscope is swallowed and passes naturally through your digestive tract while transmitting video images to a data recorder worn on your belt

for approximately eight hours. At the end of the procedure you will return to the office and the data recorder is removed so that images of your small bowel can be put on a computer screen for physician review.

Most patients consider the test comfortable. After ingesting the capsule and until it is excreted you should not be near an MRI device or schedule an MRI examination.

What happens after capsule endoscopy?

You will be able to drink clear liquids after two hours and eat a light meal after four hours following the capsule ingestion, unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. You will have to avoid vigorous physical activity such as running or jumping during the study.

We help you become your best self.

I gave birth to a child in 2006 and another one in 2011. With both pregnancies, I gained 70 pounds and was unhappy with the way my body looked. I went to Bosshardt and Marzek and was immediately impressed because there was no pressure or salesmanship. I had a tummy tuck and breast lift in September 2011 and a breast augmentation in July 2012. The results were outstanding, and now I think my body is perfect! Also, the entire office staff treats you like family.

SEEK ADVICE, BUT USE YOUR OWN COMMON SENSE

It is human nature to seek advice or direction from friends, peers, loved ones, and professionals. In fact, I sought out advice when my husband and I were considering launching Healthy Living five years ago.

At that time, it seemed like a very risky, possibly even crazy, idea to launch a new company and product in the midst of the largest economic crash in our generation’s history. But we had an idea, and we wanted to receive feedback from people we trusted and respected.

For the most part, mainly everyone advised against it. It was simply too much of a gamble, especially since we would have to use every bit of our savings to launch the magazine.

Fortunately, Doug and I believed in our idea and pushed forward. And the more we believed in it, the more people around us believed in it. It was our passion for the magazine and our love for the concept that started to spread, making others see its potential.

Since then, Healthy Living has been recognized as one of Florida’s best overall magazines for four years in a row. It has also motivated other publishers to launch the Healthy Living concept in Citrus, Hernando, Seminole, Pasco, and Marion counties, inspiring countless readers by being a positive voice in the communities they serve.

Looking back, I learned a very valuable lesson. That lesson is it can be a good idea to seek advice and invite discussion on decisions that you make in life, but ultimately the decisions need to be your own. Trust your instincts and move forward with what you believe is right. Don’t let fear prevent you from following your dreams. If your intentions are to succeed, then you will succeed.

With that said, we here at Healthy Living wanted to offer you, our readers, some advice that we have collected over these past five years. We also invited feedback from our very own advisory board. We hope that you find something within these pages that speaks to you and encourages you to begin living your best life. If you believe in yourself and focus on your dreams, nothing can prevent you from achieving them.

As always, we invite your feedback on this month’s issue.

Time to downsize

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of children ages 6–11 in the United States who were obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to 20 percent in 2008. One of the culprits is a downplay on healthy eating.

HELP YOUR CHILDREN ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN HEALTHY EATING HABITS WITH THESE TIPS FROM THE CDC:

• Provide lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products.

• Include low-fat or non-fat milk or dairy products.

• Serve reasonably sized portions.

• Eliminate sodas and replace with lots of water.

• Limit all sugar-sweetened beverages.

• Avoid saturated fats.

• Choose lean meats, poultry, fish, lentils, and beans for protein.

FAREWELL, OLD FRIEND

We take pets into our homes and hearts knowing we probably will outlive them. When a beloved pet dies, it can be every bit as traumatic and painful as losing a family member. Grieving is normal, but it may be difficult to describe how you are feeling, especially to those who do not own a pet.

Fortunately, Cornerstone Hospice now offers group gatherings for those who have lost a furry friend. These sessions allow participants to talk with others who are also grieving over the loss of a pet and to begin their journey toward healing. A hospice bereavement counselor leads the session.

The class is held on Wednesdays at 10a.m. at 2445 Lane Park Road in Tavares. For more information, call Peggy Sredl at 352.742.6812.

TIPS FOR COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A PET

• Your grief is yours, so don’t let anyone tell you how to feel. Only you can know when it is time to “move on” or “get over it.” Feel whatever you feel without embarrassment or judgment.

• Try contacting others who have lost pets. Search for pet loss support groups and online message boards.

• Create a legacy for your pet by planting a tree in its memory, compiling a photo album, or openly talking about your favorite memories of your pet.

• Look after yourself. Losing a pet can be taxing on your physical and emotional health. Be sure to eat healthy, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Last summer, a photograph of John Unger and his beloved dog Schoep swimming in Lake Superior to relieve the dog’s arthritic body went viral and touched the hearts of many Americans. So much so that people from all parts of the country sent Unger thousands of dollars so Schoep could receive effective treatment. Unger recently announced on Facebook that his 20-yearold canine friend passed away. The post received more than 33,000 likes.

Addressing mental health

In Florida Hospital Association’s 2013 Community Benefit Report, 14 programs were highlighted that are truly making a difference in the communities they serve. One of those programs is LifeStream Behavioral Center’s Wellness Integration Network (WIN) clinic.

WIN is an integrated care clinic that offers patients the ability to receive routine primary care services and consultations from a psychiatric care team at the same time. Research

shows that individuals who are mentally ill die on average 25 years before the general population due to the health challenges they face such as obesity, smoking, and diabetes.

The WIN program also offers nurse care managers who provide home visits, referrals to specialists, free transportation to and from appointments, and a wide variety of wellness activities and workshops. ■

South Lake Hospital has entered into a management agreement with Pure Athletics to operate the track and field complex at the National Training Center (NTC) in Clermont. The partnership will allow for expanded programming and athlete recruitment at the facility. In addition, it will help grow the NTC outreach in the track and field industry.

Ken Brauman, manager of the U.S. track and field men’s team for the 2012 Olympics in London, leads the management of Pure Athletics. His extensive track and field resume includes being named the National High School Track Coach of the Year in 1997.

A healing “dive”

South Lake Hospital opened the South Lake Wound Care Center in mid-July. The center features two hyperbaric oxygen chambers that each weigh 2,000 pounds and are used in the advanced treatment of chronic wounds.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a non-invasive treatment method where oxygen levels can be returned to damaged tissues. The patient simply lies in the chamber, which is designed to “dive” the patient to depths equaling the pressure of being 60 feet below sea level. The treatment uses 100 percent medical-grade oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure to nourish all tissues, which allows the body to heal itself naturally.

This treatment is especially beneficial to the rising number of Lake County residents with chronic wounds resulting from diabetes, obesity, and radiation therapy. ■

will be undergoing renovation projects in the next several months to make the track and field complex second to none as a premier training destination for local, national, and international athletes. We will continue to support community programs and offer more opportunities to the youth in Lake County.”

A CALL FOR ADVOCACY

While Allison Kreiger Walsh enjoys her duties as a wife, her rewarding career, and being an advocate for people with eating disorders, nothing is more fulfilling than spending time with her 17-month-old daughter, Madison. They take walks together, shop together, and sing together.

“The best day of my life was the day my daughter was born,” Allison says.

Many moms have uttered those exact words, but for Allison, bringing a child into this world was a significant feat. As a high school freshman in 1997, she had blossomed into the ‘all-American’ girl who was beautiful and excelled academically and athletically. Unfortunately, her desire to achieve perfection in all facets of life marked the beginning of a horrific three-and-a-half year battle with bulimia and anorexia.

Although a team of specialists helped her overcome these debilitating diseases, she endured numerous side effects — tooth decay, hair loss, acid reflux, shingles, busted blood vessels in her eyes, and a tear in her stomach. Worst of all, her menstruation cycles stopped, leaving her unsure whether she would ever be able to conceive and have a baby.

“I went to a reproductive medicine specialist and was put on hormone replacement therapy,”

she says. “That helped me a lot.”

Since overcoming her battle, Allison has been blessed. She won the title of Miss Florida in 2006, graduated law school from Florida A&M University, and married her caring husband, Brian, in 2009. She is now gainfully employed at Umatilla-based Recovery Village, a 67,000 square-foot facility that treats people struggling with bulimia and anorexia, as well as addiction and mental health problems. Allison relishes her role as a voice of hope.

“If you live through something like this, it is your responsibility to help others who are struggling,” she says. “Although recovery is a long road, enjoying your life again is absolutely possible. I’m a breathing, living example.”

Knowing that family history is a risk factor for bulimia and anorexia, she does not want to see Madison endure the same fate. “As a mother, I am going to empower her and equip her with the necessary tools so she won’t have to go through those struggles like I did.”

ALLISON SUGGESTS WATCHING FOR THE FOLLOWING SIGNS OF AN EATING DISORDER:

• Self-starvation

• Hiding food

• Going to the bathroom immediately after a meal

• Use of laxatives

• Excessive exercising

• Tooth deterioration

HOW CAN AN ELECTRIC EEL ZAP THINGS?!

WRITER:

Eels are fascinating critters. An eel is much more than just an answer in your crossword puzzle or a sushi dish that is pretty good (although not as good as tuna or yellowtail). Nevertheless, one variety particularly draws our attention: the electric eel.

Native to South America, electric eels aren’t really eels; they are knifefish. By any name, they can certainly generate electricity, which they use to incapacitate fish and crustaceans for their lunch.

But how do they do it? The website AskaNaturalist.com says, “The cells of all living things generate electrical charges. In an electric eel (Electrophorus electricus), thousands of modified muscle cells in the thick tail are lined up like batteries in a flashlight. Though each cell generates only about 0.15 volts, in a large electric eel, six thousand cells may be stacked to make one giant battery that can generate as much as 600 volts for a short pulse.” That is 50 times the

shocking power of the 12-volt battery in your car.

Eels can reach giant proportions. National Geographic states an eel can reach a length of eight feet and weigh more than 40 pounds.

The internal makeup of electric eels includes three organs that produce electricity. Susana Cortazar of the Miami Metro Zoo explains, “The Sachs organ, located near the head, produces the weak electric charge used to communicate and orient themselves to their environment. The Main and Hunter’s organs produce the much stronger electric charge used to stun and paralyze their prey. And since they are electricityproducing fish, their bodies are like a battery — the head is positive and the tail is negative. Only 20 percent of their body consists of vital organs and the remaining

80 percent is devoted to the electricity-producing ones.”

While the eels do produce quite an electrical wallop, the shock generated is so brief that the chances of a human fatality are rare.

It’s an open question on whether or not eels shock themselves when firing their electrical burst. No studies have been done, but it is possible that eels do shock themselves but have built up a tolerance so they are not incapacitated.

When discussing eels we have to mention another famous eel, although not

an electric one. This eel was the inspiration for the great Italian love song made famous by Dean Martin. You remember the song: When you’re down by the sea and an eel bites your knee, that’s a moray!

Soothing your stomaches

That pain in your gut might be more than just a nagging bellyache. It could be a sign of celiac and mesenteric artery blockage, which has the potential to cause severe damage to your stomach and intestines.

AUGUST 2013 ISSUE www.ocalaice.com

Our Community

Our community is one of the most charitable in the state… possibly the country. We have many nonprofits that support all ages, backgrounds, and illnesses with a variety of activities in which anyone can participate. The numbers of people who come out to support these causes touches me, and my team at ICE is among them. We are active supporters of our local YMCA, Ocala Women’s Shelter, American Heart Association, and local food banks. Our team also organizes an annual Walk to End Cardiovascular Disease event each November.

These community activities give us the chance to hear from our neighbors who have a personal connection with a disease or condition, delivering the message of awareness closer to home. It also gives us the opportunity to support the cause by walking or running, which I feel is a win-win! The desired result is that we use this knowledge to identify early symptoms of conditions like celiac and mesenteric artery blockage and feel empowered to help ourselves, our families, and our neighbors live healthier lives.

By dedicating ourselves to such causes each year, we educate and update each other on these issues and can make strides toward living healthier lives — and hopefully saving lives, too. Imagine how much healthier we would be if we all picked something to support each month. Even if it is just reading about a new condition or disease on the Internet, we can discover so much about what is impacting world health and provide for greater understanding of those around us. Another win-win for our community!

Yours,

Celiac and mesenteric artery interventions

The section of the aorta — the body’s main artery — that travels through the abdomen has a huge job, considering it supplies blood flow to areas of the body where digestion and filtration take place. There are several arteries that branch off the aorta in this area and attach to the vital organs in the abdomen. But why is blood and oxygen important for digestion and filtration? What can go wrong if our body cannot amass our blood cell ‘troops’ to these organs when they are needed?

To understand how this system of arteries works together, think in threes. First, there is the celiac

artery: a short, thick stump that sticks out from the aorta. This stump is one of three major branches of the abdominal aorta. The others are the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. The celiac artery serves the liver, stomach, abdominal esophagus, spleen, the first half of the pancreas, and the small intestine where most chemical digestion takes place. The other two branches — the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries — feed the intestines, colon, pancreas, and the rectum with oxygenrich blood.

We know arteries become narrow due to plaque buildup on their walls, a process

called atherosclerosis. However, what is different about plaque in arteries located in the abdomen is the repercussions are even more complex. For example, the celiac artery is a key source of blood to the organs in the abdomen because the interconnections with the other major arteries cannot provide enough blood to the tissue on their own. In severe cases, obstruction of arteries located in the abdomen could cause the tissue to die. But one thing is certain, when the stomach and intestines do not have enough circulation, they cannot digest or process food properly. This

can cause a domino effect in other areas of the body.

The safest way to determine whether the symptoms are a result of a bad casserole recipe or the result of blockage is to visit professionals like those at ICE. They can evaluate whether the symptoms of weight loss, severe abdominal pain, bloating after eating, vomiting, dizziness, or low blood pressure are just a bad meal or if combined with risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, high cholesterol, or other cardiovascular diseases, are of concern and need attention.

CASE STUDY

Fearless Kristine

Socialization in The Villages is usually planned around food, but imagine being afraid to eat. One sip of soup or one bite of a sandwich was enough to send me to the floor writhing with stomach pain. At times I would vomit or have diarrhea. Not only were these episodes embarrassing for me and my friends, I also worried about how I would get home in such pain. I stopped going to dinners in fear of having an episode and this drastically affected my social life.

I spent four years trying to find out why I was instantly sick after each meal. It wasn’t until the past year that my gastroenterologist discovered my celiac and

mesenteric arteries were blocked, so he referred me to Dr. Qamar at ICE. After a series of tests, including an ultrasound, Dr. Qamar confidently and reassuringly said, “We can fix this.” He confirmed that both arteries were blocked. There was no blood flow to my stomach, which prevented my stomach from digesting food.

Six to eight weeks after Dr. Qamar cleared the blockages, I found myself sitting down to lunch with the girls after a round of golf. I ordered a sandwich and was able to finish half of it without any pain. I know half a sandwich isn’t a lot to many people, but to me it was more than what I had been able to eat in a very long time… pain-free!

Dennis DeAngelo: a helping hand

When it comes to being a youth pastor, Dennis DeAngelo does much more than just preach sermons and arrange fun outings.

He graciously steps into dunk tanks and allows students to soak him. He plays dodge ball with kids and is inevitably targeted to be pummeled with a ball. And he even organizes competitions and lets the winner smash chocolate cream pies in his face.

“Once, I challenged the kids to a task and offered to shave my head if they could complete it,” he says.

Dennis is youth pastor of Family Christian Church in Clermont. He is 47. At many churches around the country, youth pastors typically are half his age. Yet, that has not hindered him from having a unique ability to relate to today’s youth.

“I always tell people that I’m a 19-year-old kid trapped inside a 47-year-old body,” he says excitedly. “I also raise two teenagers of my own, so I have my finger on the pulse of today’s pop culture.”

His youthful and boyish spirit has made him a rock star of sorts among the 130 middle school and high school students whom he ministers on a weekly basis. Many bypass their parents and approach him to talk about personal issues such as sexual abuse, cutting, and homosexuality. Even though he has never been a

fan of Facebook, he recently created a personal page so kids can have another means of communicating with him.

“When I talk to these kids, I bring a parental, nurturing side to the table that 20-year-old youth pastors could not give these kids because they do not have children and are barely adults themselves. Younger youth pastors simply do not have the life experience that I do.”

That unique combination of youthfulness and wisdom helps him effectively relate to kids and successfully compete for their attention against video game systems, computers, cell phones, and other technology. Most importantly, he exhibits a genuine love for each child who is part of his ministry.

“It hurts me a great deal to see fear in the eyes of a teenage boy and girl,” he says with sadness filling his voice. “Sometimes I just go home and cry because it hurts so much. I wish I could build one big compound and bring them home with me.”

Sometimes, he hears horrifying situations. Such was the case of a 15-year-old

boy who was being sexually pursued by an adult male. Twenty minutes after the boy told his father about the situation, they drove to Family Christian Church to talk with Dennis. Even though Dennis is a kid at heart, he shows a mature side when handling pressure-packed situations like these.

“When they told me about it, my first thought was that I would like to find that perpetrator and give him an old-fashioned beat down. But then my spiritual side takes over, and I remind myself that God died for that man as much as He died for me. My spirituality helps me get over the initial anger in a situation like that.”

That spiritual side is something Dennis discovered in his 20s as a truck driver who delivered lumber throughout Florida. He joined a gospel quartet. On days when he was not driving, the quartet would visit nursing homes, jails, churches, and hospitals to sing the gospel and cheer people up.

“Another thing we’d do is sing on some of the most dangerous streets in Sanford

and Orlando at night,” he says. “It was a little scary at first, but the people in those neighborhoods accepted us and appreciated the message we were delivering.”

Single at the time, Dennis met a woman who invited him to attend Wednesday night services at Calvary Baptist Church in Orlando. “I figured if I went to church with her, she might want to go to dinner with me. We dated for a while and then broke up.”

Even after saying goodbye to the woman, Dennis continued attending the Wednesday night services because “the messages gripped my heart.”

“One night, the pastor said if you want to develop a relationship to God to please come forward. I stood up, came forward, and the rest is history. Even though I had selfish motives for initially attending the church, God had other plans for me.”

Dennis entered the ministry and has spent the majority of his career serving as worship leader of various Central Florida churches. Four years ago, he accepted the position as

youth pastor of Family Christian Church. As he talks about the joys of interacting with today’s youth, excitement surfaces.

“I’ve seen so many kids pulled out of the hands of the enemy and now living a fulfilling life,” he says. “God has helped deliver them from drugs, pornography, violence, and other things. The victories that He helps them achieve are incredible. That pumps me up to no end.”

Now more than ever, teenagers need someone from the adult world who will listen to their problems and help steer them down the right path. They know they can trust Dennis to do exactly that.

“They come to me looking for order in their lives. Sadly, in many cases, their parents simply do not put the necessary energy in becoming engaged in their daily life. Most of the teenagers who come to me are experimenting with drugs and alcohol, or they are into pornography. When talking with them, I always remind myself to remain calm and remember I made stupid decisions when I was 14.”

Betsy, who at the time worked as a legal assistant for a local attorney, informed her friends at First Baptist Church about the workshops. They asked her to begin teaching.

As a result, she began conducting support group meetings for mothers on

Although Betsy was not paid monetarily, she felt compensated in other ways. “I loved doing this,” she says. “We’d laugh together, cry together, and openly talk about

“I love being around people who like to learn and grow,” she says. “I wake up each day excited and passionate about doing my job.”

Tino Ierulli: tough love

Tino Ierulli’s Facebook wall speaks volumes about his approach not only as a football coach but also as a mentor to his students on and off the field. While the world may think coaches only care about the final tally on the scoreboard, Tino wants more than just hard hits and seamless plays from his players; he wants them to succeed in all aspects of life.

“These are our sons,” he says. “People forget we’re more than just a coach. To a lot of these kids, we are a father

graciously accepts the part of wearing many hats. Some days, he’s just coach. Other days, he can be a guidance counselor, a sounding board, or even just a friend.

“Many times the boys will talk about things like their home life, their grades, and their relationships with friends and girlfriends,” he says. “They will talk to me about things they wouldn’t talk to their own parents about, and to me, it’s both sobering and challenging.”

As he speaks, it becomes apparent Tino takes this taxing yet rewarding responsibility quite seriously because he knows the advice he gives carries a lot of weight. He takes pride in giving guidance beyond what happens on the field at game time. His advice is all encompassing, from pressing the value of becoming a well-rounded individual to discussing the benefits of a good education.

to shatter dreams, but I do let them know to be prepared for something else in a positive way because I think it’s still great to have dreams.”

That is what Tino calls tough love. “I believe in tough love. Show you care about them, but also be honest,” he says. “I will never make a decision for them, but the way I give advice is to open their eyes and let them make their own choices. It helps teach them to make the right choices and determine what’s best for themselves on their own.”

Over the years, Tino has gotten to see the results of his no-nonsense yet encouraging approach. Like when Robert Aquayo, current kicker for Florida State University, visited Tino at Lake Minneola to thank him for all he did when he was his youth football coach.

figure, an uncle, a big brother.”

For the last three years, Tino has worked as defensive coordinator of the Lake Minneola High School Hawks, but he’s been coaching youth sports for almost 17 years. With a fierce passion to see children reach their full potential, Tino gave up a job making a sixfigure income to become a coach.

“I was blessed with good coaches when I was growing up,” he says, “so I wanted to give some of that back.”

As part of giving back, Tino

“People look at coaches like all we care about is sports, but that’s wrong. We talk to these students about the importance of academics,” Tino says. “Though we call them student athletes, we instill in them that student comes first, athlete comes second.”

It’s why Tino talks to his players about having a backup plan, even if their hopes and dreams rest on becoming a professional football player.

“When someone tells me they want to be in the NFL, I always tell them that’s great and to go for it, but I also talk to them about having an alternative in case the NFL doesn’t pan out. I’m not going

“When the children I coached come back in front of the kids I have now, it solidifies our stories,” he says. “And I have no doubt Aquayo will be a first draft pick in the NFL in a few years.”

And most recently, Tino watched a student, who came to him troubled and on the verge of dropping out, graduate from high school with a full four-year scholarship to Stony Brook University.

“My reward was seeing him sign his letter of intent because no one thought he would make it to college,” he says. “What I do is truly a blessing. I always tell my kids, ‘When someone tells you that you can’t, don’t look for a way to go around it, go through it.’ What we coaches do is not just a job. We’re trying to make young men out of these boys.”

Florida Hospital Waterman celebrates 75 years of caring and is looking forward to a healthy future.

In 1938, Frank Waterman turned the elegant Fountain Inn in downtown Eustis over to a group of local doctors for use as a hospital. Since opening its doors to much praise and excitement 75 years ago, the hospital has achieved remarkable milestones and feats, the most important of which is having a positive impact on the health and well-being of Lake County residents.

This month also marks the 10-year anniversary when the hospital was moved into a stateof-the-art, 450,000-square-foot facility in Tavares.

Without question, this is a time to celebrate the countless patients who have trusted their health and lives to Florida Hospital Waterman throughout the years. It is also a time to remember the physicians, employees, trustees, and volunteers who have demonstrated a friendly, caring spirit while treating hospital guests with exceptional care.

While hospital staff celebrates the hospital’s colorful past, they look ahead to an even brighter future. David Ottati, president and chief executive officer, of-

“Going forward, quality and service have to be the forefront of all of our decisions. Although health care will continue to change with all the reforms that are occurring, we must continue providing exceptional care. That is the guiding principle of everything we’ll do here.”

One such program, CREATION Health, is already in place. CREATION is an acronym for Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, Outlook, and Nutrition. Through this exciting program, the hospital holds numerous classes to ensure that all eight areas of health are in harmony.

Several of those classes include Super Noggin, which introduces activities

to stimulate brainpower; Yum Yum Club, an interactive class where participants learn to prepare healthy food; and The Art of Moving Prayer, which blends breathing, movement, and prayerful thought with music to reduce stress.

“We want to be viewed as a health partner and help teach people how to be able to take care of themselves and not always have to rely on the health

1960: Because the hospital faced financial difficulties, local physicians and businessmen drew up a constitution and by-laws for an organization called Waterman Memorial Hospital Association, Inc. Eventually, all debts were paid off and patient rooms were redecorated and air-conditioned.

1964: Fifty-two patient rooms were renovated. Also, a large kitchen consisting of stainless steel and glazed tile were installed.

Fountain Inn Dining Room was opened by Frank Waterman on Christmas Day in 1924. The hotel did well until the Great Depression. Waterman became ill. He offered the Fountain Inn to his physician, Dr. C.M. Tyre, for a hospital. On July 1st, the hotel became known as Waterman Memorial Hospital. Doctors rented space on the ground floor. ALWAYS STAYING HIP

Florida Hospital Waterman’s orthopedic department has undergone exciting advancements and growth.

Perhaps the most exciting news is the introduction of MAKOplasty robotic partial knee resurfacing. Using a robot helps a surgeon precisely pinpoint where arthritic knee bones need to be removed and thus, healthy bone, ligaments, and tendons are spared. Patients who have undergone this innovative procedure experience smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and less rehabilitation. The procedure typically takes between 45 minutes to one hour, patients can be home in one day or in some case, the same day.

Dr. Jon Radnothy, orthopaedic surgeon, chief of

medical staff, was part of the driving force in bringing this state-of-the-art technology to Florida Hospital Waterman. “There are only a small number of hospitals that are willing to invest in this technology,” he says. “That speaks volumes as to how much the administration of Florida Hospital Waterman cares about residents of Lake County.”

Of course, that is not the only exciting news. In an effort to better accommodate the growing needs of the community, the hospital expanded its orthopedic department last November. The orthopedic department is now located on the sixth floor and includes 30 beds, as well as a group therapy room where total hip replacement and knee surgery patients undergo rehabilitation with physical and occupational therapists.

“It is a really great program because the patients do exercises together, motivate each other, and learn from one another,” says Jessica Scott Fowler, RN, who serves as patient navigator. “This helps them recover faster and go home quicker.”

The department also of-

A HEART FOR HEALTH CARE

Without question, Florida Hospital Waterman takes its patients health to heart. That’s especially true with the hospital’s Heart Center.

Since Richard Pearce became director of the Heart Center more than three years ago, he has seen exciting changes, including the establishment of an open-heart surgery program and the addition of three interventional cardiologists.

“Ninety percent of what is going on with cardiac care in hospitals around the nation we can do here at Florida Hospital Waterman,” says Richard. “The only exceptions are transplants and pediatric cardiac surgery, but overall, we have a very comprehensive program.”

One of those programs is “off-pump” open heart

surgery. Dr. Gary Allen, a respected heart surgeon, performs this less invasive technique. Rather than utilizing the traditional method of stopping the heart and hooking a patient up to heart-lung bypass machine, the heart muscle is slowed but continues beating during the procedure. Patients typically experience a shortened hospital stay and faster recovery.

“Studies have shown that high-risk patients have a better survival rate with this procedure,” Dr. Allen says. “There is also less chance for heart rhythm, kidney, or liver complications and better preservation of heart muscle.”

Physicians and staff of the Heart Center are equally excited about upgrading its existing catheterization labs. Superior diagnostic imaging

will be added, helping cardiologists better evaluate a patient’s heart function and pinpoint any abnormalities. This will also allow the

cardiology team to deliver speedier and more effective treatment to heart attack patients. Door-to-balloon time, or the time between

arriving at a hospital and the opening of a blocked artery with angioplasty, is vitally important. The hospital’s goal performance is

“More than 98 percent of all our heart patients get from the emergency room to the catheterization lab in 90 minutes,” says Addy Krebs, manager of cardiovascular services. “This is important because time is muscle. For every minute blood flow to the heart is blocked, heart muscle is deprived of oxygen.”

Dr. Kehinde Laynei, chairman of the Cardiology department, has been a cardiologist at Florida Hospital Waterman for more than 22 years. For him, witnessing the Heart Center’s growth has been remarkable. “There was a time when we used to send our heart patients to Orlando, but today, we offer all the tests and services that hospitals in larger cities offer. It has been amazing to see the quality of cardiologists and the advanced equipment we’ve brought in over the years.”

FIGHTING THE BIG “C”

The Florida Hospital Waterman Cancer Institute combines the latest technology and compassionate health care professionals who stand by patients as they bravely battle cancer. After all, who would not want doctors who are as re-

lentless as the disease itself?

Realizing that a cancer diagnosis is a time filled with fear and uncertainty, the Cancer Institute now offers a patient navigator program to help support, guide, and educate cancer patients along their journey. Eileen Bascomb, RN, an oncology nurse for more than 20 years, fills that role beautifully.

“I help patients navigate the labyrinth of cancer care,” she says. “For patients who are newly diagnosed, things can be overwhelming. I make sure their appointments are set and make sure patients are where they need to be. I also provide them with support because they need a safe place where they can come and share their thoughts and feelings. Also, if they have any concerns, I provide education to help minimize that. We are not charging patients for these services. We do it because it is the right thing to do.”

Eileen even accompanies patients to doctor’s appointment. “If you are frightened about going to a doctor, sometimes you only hear every fourth or fifth word a doctor is saying. I am like a second pair of ears for them. Once the appointment is over, we come back to my office and I can better help them understand what the doctor told them.”

In addition to superior service, the Cancer Insti-

tute offers superior treatments. Its innovative team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons utilize the latest technologies and procedures to tackle the toughest cases.

One of those new procedures is stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to treat lung cancer. Dr. Jeffrey Brabham says this treatment involves delivering high doses of radiation to a tumor with pinpoint accuracy. This procedure spares surrounding tissue.

“It works about 95 percent of the time to control the tumor, and it can keep patients from undergoing surgery,”

he says. “It is also a great treatment for patients who cannot undergo surgery.”

A SOLID FOUNDATION

Since 1985, the Florida Waterman Hospital Foundation has played an integral part of the hospital, and its role will undoubtedly be even bigger in the years ahead. The foundation creates financial support to assist the hospital in fulfilling its mission within the communities it serves. This financial support helps the hospital acquire advanced

equipment, as well as bring unique, innovative services to enhance patient care.

In 2012, the foundation raised more than $4 million for the hospital. Much of that money comes from charitable donations, grants, sponsorships, and employee contributions. In addition, the foundation raises money by organizing several annual events, including the Partners in Health Care Golf Classic, the Celebration of Life Gala, and the Red Hat Luncheon.

As the community continues growing, there will always be immediate and emerging needs in various departments throughout

They include president Anita Young, director of development April Kauffman, special events coordinator Joan Ordazzo, donor relations coordinator Sherrie Douglas, and executive assistant Nancy Powell. They have more than 110 years of combined experience working at the foundation.

“We are compared on a quarterly basis with the other hospital foundations in the Adventist Health System throughout the country,” April says. “Historically, we almost always rank in the top 5. All of our funds stay within these

We have a great team, and we’ve celebrated weddings, birthdays, graduations, and babies together. We know how each other operate, and we’re always willing to help one another out to the best of our ability.”

MAINTAINING QUALITY

The cleanliness of the hospital, a nurse’s bedside manner, and the effectiveness of treatments all play

a role in how patients view the quality of their health care. Florida Hospital Waterman is the only hospital in Lake County to be recognized with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by the Leapfrog Group, an independent organization that compiles data and assigns scores to hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Leapfrog Group was established by large national employers and health care purchasers to help give the public information they can use to help protect themselves and their families. The department also makes sure that all services offered in the hospital meet state and

federal standards.

“The hospital is the engine, and our job in the Department of Quality is to keep it lubricated and moving forward,” says Diana Liebnitzky, director of quality and patient safety officer. “Through excellence in monitoring, we make sure that all systems in the hospital are running smoothly. This assures excellent outcomes in all our service lines for each and every patient.”

Follow TRACI OLIVER as she embarks on a monumental lifestyle change. Every two months, HLM will update her progress and detail her frustrations, struggles, and triumphs.

Best foot forward

As Traci has discovered, a lifestyle change is not only about losing weight; it is about facing fears and growing and learning as a person. Despite the roller-coaster ride, she continues to stay on track.

365 DAYS TO LIVING HEALTHY

Traci, a firstgrade teacher at The Villages Charter School, turns in a letter of resignation to the school principal. She is taking a school year off to fully concentrate on her weight loss and health goals. She plans to return to the classroom in the 2014-2015 school year.

Traci has taken a fresh perspective on eating and now buys organic fruit and vegetables at Fresh Market in The Villages. That has paid big dividends, as she has lost 70 pounds.

Traci overcomes a longtime fear by accompanying her husband, Chad, to his softball game.

DAY 154 DAY 168 DAY 172 DAY 191

This is not an easy decision. “Leaving school is tough because my profession is my identity,” she says with tears rolling down her face. “I have always been a people pleaser, and sometimes I don’t know how to say no. My family is still a priority, but this decision is about focusing on me.”

“He has been playing in a league for years, but I never went because I was so overweight and did not want people to know I was his wife. I did not want to be around people because I was afraid of them judging me. Going there wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.”

Traci’s family is enjoying one of her former favorite snacks, chips and salsa. Traci picks up a chip and bites off the corner.

“I could instantly see fear in the faces of my husband and girls. They looked at me as if I was about to lose control or something. The only reason I bit into the chip was to see if it was still fresh. The chips had been in the pantry for quite some time. I have not bit into a chip since then. My daughter relayed this story to my nutritionist, Lori Esarey. Lori told me it was okay and not a big deal. Nobody is perfect.”

Traci and her family attend a Tampa Bay Rays baseball game. During the drive, Traci silently maps out a plan on how to avoid sitting next to a stranger and becoming embarrassed. The plan fails.

“A man sat right next to me and had a lady friend with him. As soon as they sat down he whispered something to her, and she looked directly at me. I thought, ‘Yep, this is what I was afraid of.’ I insisted that Chad switch seats with me.”

Traci takes supplements and energy pills as part of her healthy lifestyle change. She washes them down in the morning with a tasty energy drink.

During a fiveday vacation to Ponce Inlet, Traci and Chad jog 3.4 miles each day on the beach.

“This is big for me because I always felt uncomfortable on the beach. Last summer, I walked Panama City Beach and felt totally gawked at the entire time.”

The family ends their vacation by eating at Crabby Joe’s Deck and Grill. Chad orders orange cake, a longtime favorite dessert of the Olivers.

“They brought it out, and it looked amazing. I told my husband to just let me smell it and I would be fine. I have discovered that smelling food can satisfy my craving.Plus, I’ve eaten so clean since January that I probably would have been in a diabetic coma had I taken a bite.”

Traci takes up a new exercise — swimming. She and her 15-year-old daughter, Bailey, swim 70 laps each morning at the Leesburg City Pool. Traci, a former middle school and high school swimmer, combines breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

DAY 194 DAY 198 DAY 201 DAY 204

Traci begins running 1.4 miles each afternoon with Bailey. She says it is the first time she has run in nearly 12 years.

“Bailey has been so supportive of me throughout this process. She is my lifesaver.”

“I’ve always loved swimming, so for me it felt wonderful to be back in the pool.”

Pictured: Even though her husband enjoys pancakes for breakfast, Traci consumes egg whites and a chocolate diet shake. Once she excuses herself from the table, she writes down everything she consumes. In addition, when she finishes her fitness routines — which now include making waves in the pool and pounding the pavement with her brand-new running shoes — she journals how many sets she performs.

COMING IN OCTOBER

About 20 percent of sports injuries involve the shoulder. Problems are generally due to overuse, which loosens the group of tendons and muscles that surround the shoulder. To prevent shoulder injuries, be sure to lightly stretch before your workouts. If you do injure yourself, RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) and take antiinflammatory medication.

EAT FIT/NOT FAT

PART

IT TAKES THREE: RIGHT FOOD, RIGHT AMOUNT, RIGHT TIME

WRITER: LORI ESAREY

Eating the “right” food in the “wrong” amount is just as “wrong” as eating the “wrong” food. If you are striving to look and feel great, here’s the secret: You are what you eat. The right foods are necessary to live healthy, but it is equally important to understand that even the right food eaten in the wrong amount can result in unhealthy body fat and a feeling of fatigue and frustration. Understanding what your body needs is a matter of priority to achieve the results you want.

Diet simply implies deprivation. Several thousand “diets” exist with the majority focusing on calories and failing to provide you with knowledge of what your body needs to live, have energy, think clearly, and keep cells alive. Depriving yourself of necessary nutrients will lead to premature aging and death. Depending on your “diet,” you could be creating cell death while you are attempting to lose weight. Failing to eat enough food — independent of the “right food” factor — will surely leave you feeling tired, hungry, and looking unhealthy.

Let us start by getting rid of the old thinking that if you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight. Have you noticed this philosophy leaves you deprived, hungry, and for the amount of sacrifice, inconsistent with your weight loss? Or worse, as soon as you stop working out for any reason (family visiting, illness, job change, etc.), you pack on those pounds. I propose you simply stop focusing on the number of calories. Instead, start paying attention to the right amount of the right foods that will satisfy hunger and leave you feeling energized, refreshed, and alive. Focus on the kinds of calories you are consuming instead of how many. Eating too much broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, chicken, fish, and lean meats will not make you fat, but eating empty calorie junk will.

BE AWARE

100-CALORIE SNACKS:

Read the label and ask yourself, “What kind of calories are these?” In reading the nutrition label, you will find sugar, preservatives, and limited — if any — nutrients.

CEREAL:

The average cereal provides limited nutrition. Read the label for the real ingredients and check out the serving size of 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

NUTS:

Although specific nuts and seeds can be very healthy, don’t eat too many. Know your serving sizes.

PEANUTS:

They are a high allergy risk and they are not nuts; they are beans.

GLUTEN-FREE:

It’s not necessarily better for you. If a food is packaged, then man made it, and as Jack LaLanne said, “If man made it, don’t eat it.”

TURKEY BURGERS:

They are often higher in fat than a regular burger because most turkey burgers are made from dark meat. You should avoid them in order to avoid unnecessary calories.

BETTER

If you must eat pre-packaged foods, choose ones that provide limited preservatives. Also, watch out for sodium content and stay away from “empty calories,” which are substances that fill the tummy and fail to nourish the body.

Add lots of lean meat to your salad. Protein is a natural appetite suppressant and will leave you feeling more satisfied.

56 // HL // AUGUST 2013
BODY
TWO:

BEST

WHOLE FOODS are unprocessed and unrefined — or processed and refined as little as possible — before being consumed. Whole foods typically do not contain added ingredients, such as salt, carbohydrates, or fat.

Remember your CORE FOODS: lean meats and non-starchy vegetables. You should eat five-to-eight cups of vegetables per day.

Eat your two servings of FRUIT with a protein or healthy fat such as almonds, walnuts, and seeds.

INSIDE

WHEN TO GET A SECOND OPINION

Have you heard this one? A man goes to a doctor. “You’re fat,” the doctor says after examining him.

“That’s not what I wanted to hear. I demand a second opinion.” says the man. “OK”, says the doctor, “You’re also disagreeable.”

Sorry. I couldn’t resist the bad joke. However, it does lead in to a discussion on second opinions: when do you get them and what do you do with them. It may come as an unpleasant surprise but your doctor — and I don’t care if he is the greatest practitioner in his field — is neither perfect nor infallible. If you have questions or concerns about your diagnosis or proposed treatment plan, a second opinion is certainly warranted.

Medicine, despite what the bean counters are trying to do with it, is not a vocation that can be practiced using rigid rules and formulas. Each of us is a unique individual who brings this individuality to the medical aspect of our lives just as we do to every other aspect. People can have the same illness but with very different signs and symptoms. Patients may respond very differently to the

same treatment program. The doctor/patient relationship is critical because the doctor who questions you, examines you, and truly knows you is really the only individual qualified to offer a diagnosis and suggest a treatment plan.

Most medical problems can be approached in more than one way. Some doctors are very aggressive in pursuing testing for certain complaints or working up every symptom. Others take a more laissez faire approach. Some are quick to recommend surgery if it is an option, while others may do everything in their power to keep patients out of the operating room. Doctors observe certain standards, but within those standards there is room for individual expression.

Doctors are as different from one another as any other group of people. They bring to their practice personal biases and prejudices, as well as differences in their training, life experiences, and professional practices. All of these taken together influence their decision-making when dealing with patients.

Some situations in medicine are fairly clear cut, and the decision making is reasonably straightforward. If you have

symptoms of a cold and your doctor recommends bed rest, drinking lots of fluid, and taking some Tylenol, you don’t really need a second opinion from another doctor. On the other hand, if you have a complex, potentially life-threatening condition, then a second opinion from another doctor may prove helpful. Cancer is a very common diagnosis. Some cancers have treatment regimens that have been well established as effective, while treatment for others is very dependent on whom you see.

With accessibility through the Internet to reputable medical institutions’ websites, patients today can do considerable research on their own regarding their medical conditions. It is not uncommon for me to see patients with unusual medical concerns who have a greater fund of knowledge about their conditions than I do. This is not to say I encourage patients to treat

themselves. Physicians bring a wealth of education, handson training, and experience to bear in interpreting medical information, evaluating clinical studies, and such.

The time to consider seeking a second medical opinion is when you have a serious and complex condition and your physician or your own research indicates several accepted ways to treat the problem. When discussing your medical care, your doctor is ethically bound to provide you not only with a recommendation for treatment but also to inform you of alternatives. He or she should give you the pros and cons of each option and inform you of the possible risks and complications of a particular plan of care.

You may wish to seek a second opinion for no other reason than you are not fully comfortable with your physician. Patients often become very

58 // HL // AUGUST 2013
BODY
If you have questions or concerns about your diagnosis or proposed treatment plan, a second opinion is certainly warranted.

close to their primary care providers and place great faith in them. When they are referred to specialists, they rely on the recommendation of a doctor they trust. Sometimes, however, this level of trust just isn’t there and a second opinion may help to reassure patients.

Patients who seek a second opinion must be prepared to hear a different recommendation. If this happens — as it sometimes does — you as a patient are faced with a dilemma: who do

you believe? Which doctor will you choose to provide your care? Things can become even a little crazy when you seek yet a third opinion to break the tie and the third opinion is different from the first two. It happens!

Another aspect of seeking a second opinion is whether your insurance company will pay for this. They may for certain conditions, but not for others. Contact your insurance representative for clarification.

A final issue is whether

you will offend your physician by seeking a second opinion. Good doctors understand that medicine is not cut-and-dried, and they appreciate the concerns and questions their patients may have. They won’t be offended when patients need reassurance. I certainly am not when my patients indicate their intent to do this. My main concern is that they see someone reputable and they understand some of the issues I covered earlier. Many patients feel much more

comfortable knowing their physician has no objection to them seeking another opinion and often that is enough to allow them to proceed with the prescribed care without actually getting a second opinion.

BODYLOOK

BODY IMAGE: CHANGE HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF

Do you have a healthy body image? If so, you are one of the few people who do not struggle with feeling comfortable in your own skin. Most people have hang-ups about the way they look. They imagine if they were “beautiful,” none of their problems would exist. Sadly, they do not recognize the true beauty they already have.

Body dysmorphic disorder is an extreme version of self-loathing where people are unable to see themselves accurately and think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day. They might look in the mirror and see the reflection of someone who is too fat, too thin, ugly, or hideous when the truth is they are attractive.

If you do not have a healthy body image, chances are you have similar thoughts to people who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder, but in a watered-down form. You might feel you are unattractive even though other people do not see you this way. Perhaps you are preoccupied with a particular feature you dislike, and when you glance in the mirror, this part of you is what you focus on rather than seeing yourself as a whole. In addition, you might imagine other people see what you see when they look at you. And as a result, you feel that they judge you harshly.

In reality, chances are other people look at you in a different way than you look at yourself. They do not concentrate on examining one particular feature, as they see you as a complete person from your head down to your feet. It is most likely that they have a balanced view of you. If only you could begin to view yourself in this way and with kinder eyes, you could have a better body image.

HOW TO SEE THROUGH GENTLE EYES

To see yourself in a kinder, gentler manner, you need to be able to look through someone else’s eyes. Of course, this sounds impossible. However, you can use the power of your imagination to view yourself as though you were another person.

You have probably never contemplated looking at yourself as though you were someone else. In fact, the only glimpse of yourself via anything other than your own eyes is likely to have been a photograph. Unfortunately, unless you are photogenic and the person taking photographs of you is a good photographer, it is possible that photographic images of you do not do you justice. Even the most

beautiful models in the world can look dreadful if the camera lens has not been kind.

IMAGERY EXERCISE TO HELP YOU STEP OUT OF YOURSELF

Sit comfortably and breathe long, slow breaths that reach deep down in your stomach. Feel the gentle rise and dip of your belly as you breathe in and out, and become more and more relaxed and calm.

Concentrate on your breathing until any noises going on around you cease to bother you and your body feels heavy and sleepy. However, do not drift into sleep mode entirely. Instead, begin to visualize someone you consider kind and caring walking down a street you know well. It should be a street you often walk yourself.

Imagine how he or she might be feeling. Then, begin to breathe at the rate you imagine that he or she is breathing. Let your breaths become mingled with theirs until you feel as though you inhabit their body. Glance through their eyes across the street, path, or lane and see someone coming toward you. Recognize that the person you see is you and feel glad to see yourself.

Look at yourself through the gentle eyes of the body you inhabit. See yourself from all angles from your head down to your feet, and notice that you are, in fact, much more attractive than you thought was possible.

After a while, imagine breathing your own breaths from inside your own body that is in front of you. Look over to the person who has gentle eyes and thank them for helping you see yourself more clearly.

Slowly return to the place where you are engaged in this visualization and begin to feel the ground or seat beneath you. Gradually open your eyes and stretch as you come back to reality with a new vision of how you really look.

Your physical appearance has been hard for you to see up until this point, as you have concentrated on seeing parts of you rather than all of you. Additionally, you might have relied on photographs that were poor representations of you to help you gain insight into your appearance. Once you have seen yourself through the eyes of someone who is kinder to you than you are to yourself, it is likely that you will have a more accurate picture of the true you.

Q: How do Botox injections work? When will I see results from a Botox cosmetic treatment? A:

Botox injections work by blocking the chemical that signals the targeted muscle of the face to contract and move. The onset of action usually takes two to three days to start and continues for the first week. Afterward, the Botox effect typically will last three to four months. Regular use may increase the longevity of a Botox treatment.

IDENTIFYING MIGRAINE TRIGGERS

If you are a migraine sufferer, recognizing the causes of your migraines is invaluable in helping you manage your condition.

It also gives your doctor the information needed to make a proper diagnosis and a recommendation for the best treatment options. Some of the most common causes of migraines are weather changes, emotional stress, and caffeine. However, the key to figuring out which triggers, or combination of triggers, could be the cause of your migraines is careful self-observation.

Many people report that their migraines are caused by changes in the weather. For some people, the trigger is specific, such as the onset of rain, a sudden drop in temperature, or a sudden pressure change. Others report that any sort of change at all — whether from hot to cold or cold to hot — is likely to bring on a migraine. Pay close attention to the weather to figure out if this is the case for you. When you feel a migraine coming on, check the weather outside and then check it in a few hours. Make sure to note any drastic weather changes. Over time, you should start to see a pattern emerging.

Sinus problems can also be a common cause of migraines. An allergic reaction to certain allergens, such as dust, pollen, mold, or pet dander, can often lead to the release of histamine, which can cause or worsen a migraine headache. If you find your migraines tend to be located in one specific part of your head — most typically above one of your eyes — then this may be the source

of your problems. Let your doctor know and perhaps ask for a referral to an ear, nose, and throat specialist, particularly if you often feel your sinuses are congested during your migraines. Any number of problems could be causing your condition.

If you find that neither the weather nor your sinuses seem to be causing your migraines, then you might need to take a close look at your diet. Some people report that certain chemicals and preservatives in foods act as triggers. According to WebMD, certain foods and beverages, such as aged cheese, alcoholic beverages, and food additives like nitrates (in pepperoni, hot dogs, luncheon meats) and monosodium glutamate (MSG, commonly found in Chinese food) may be responsible for triggering up to 30 percent of migraines. To see if you suffer from any dietary triggers, keep a food journal and keep track of everything you eat when your migraines come on. Over time, you should be able to see if your migraines are more common after eating certain foods.

Though these are common triggers for many suffers, it is possible your migraines are not due to any of them. Migraines can also be hereditary or caused by hormonal imbalances and other medical conditions. That is why it is always best to make careful observations about possible triggers and seek a doctor’s professional care for pain relief. Such information will be very helpful in building a treatment or management plan that works best for you.

ADVICE ON AGORAPHOBIA

ANXIETY A

nxiety disorders are often a taboo subject as their symptoms can be well hidden by their sufferers. Studies show that conditions such as panic disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder affect 1 in 20 people at any one time, which means it is likely that you, a family member, or a friend may be affected.

WHAT IS AGORAPHOBIA?

Agoraphobia is when someone struggles to cope with being in certain situations, such as being on public transportation, driving, being in crowded shopping centers, or even just walking to the end of the street. This usually occurs because the sufferer has experienced a panic attack when out of the house somewhere. For example, if a person experiences a panic attack in a supermarket, that person may become

fearful of having another attack next time he or she goes. That person may feel embarrassed or trapped and think people are looking at him or her. As a result, he or she may decide to avoid the supermarket altogether and then avoid other situations in case of another attack. Eventually the number of places a sufferer can go to and feel safe dwindles, which can result in some people becoming housebound.

WHY IS AGORAPHOBIA SO DEBILITATING FOR SUFFERERS?

It is often hard for other people to understand. Sufferers are often told, “How can you be scared, it’s only a bus!” or to “just get on with it.” But the fear felt during a panic attack is very real. They can be terrifying and severe, often leading people to think they are dying due to the physical symptoms. Our bodies are programmed with a fight-or-flight response

that saves us from danger. For example, if you were to encounter a bear, your body would pump out adrenaline and you would run away, which would be your flight response kicking in. This burst of fear and adrenaline can cause palpitations, sweating, nausea, and hyperventilation. When someone has a panic attack, their flight response is activating unnecessarily, triggering strong physical and mental responses.

I THINK I, OR SOMEONE I KNOW, MAY HAVE AGORAPHOBIA. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

If you think you are suffering from agoraphobia, it is important to receive help as soon as possible. The longer you ignore it, the harder it may get. The first call should to your doctor. He or she may refer you to a counselor or psychologist who may offer you some form of psychotherapy,

counseling, or medication, which can help to lift your mood and alleviate the physical symptoms of panic. If you think someone you know is struggling with agoraphobia, encourage him or her to seek help. In the meantime, you can help by being supportive and understanding. You could accompany them in situations they may find difficult, such as a walk around the park or a trip to the store. Having someone they trust may help if a panic attack does occur.

CAN IT BE CURED?

Absolutely. It may take time and hard work, but many people go on to lead full lives after agoraphobia. There are many success stories about people who once couldn’t leave their front doorstep and now travel the world! Therefore, if you or a loved one is suffering, speak up, get help, and don’t give up.

EARLY DELIVERY

On August 18th, 2012, my husband David and I were blessed with our sweet baby boy. I was truly in disbelief until the moment they rolled me into the delivery room. The reason it was so unbelievable was that I still had 11 weeks until he was due.

That day was a complete whirlwind, as was the day before. On the morning of August 17th, I was to keep my niece Eden while I housesat for my parents in Leesburg (my husband and I live in Valdosta, Ga.). We were planning to have a fun day hanging out, swimming, taking our sweet doggy Cookie for a walk, and having lunch. When Eden arrived at the house around 8:30 that morning, I began feeling a little under the weather. I was very lethargic and had been having sudden cramps every now and again for about a week. But since I was looking forward to this day of fun, I brushed my sick feelings under the carpet and went about the day.

We played a bit inside, and then before heading out to lunch, we took Cookie for a walk. As we walked Cookie, I really started feeling sick. I barely made it back to the house without passing out. To make a long story short, the rest of the day went downhill. Eden’s daddy picked her up around six o’clock that evening, and I went to bed. I tried to rest but kept waking up throughout the night with cramps that kept get-

ting worse and worse. First thing in the morning, I called David, who was home in Valdosta about three hours away. I told him what was happening, and he advised me to go to the hospital to see what was going on. In the meantime, he packed a few items and headed straight to Leesburg.

After the doctors worked to get the contractions to stop, there was no more trying; my baby boy was on his way into this world. My mind went in numerous different directions: When is my husband going to get here? Is he going to make it in time to see our baby being born? Thankfully and miraculously, all of my family had been in Orlando at a business conference, so they skipped over to Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Children to be a part of this exciting yet crazy experience. At 2p.m. with my husband beside me, I got to see the most beautiful face I had ever seen. Christopher Timothy Coté was born, weighing in at only two pounds, nine ounces. I tell everyone he was basically the size of a 6-inch sub. From the delivery room, they took our sweet new bundle of joy to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where all premature babies are kept until they are able to survive on their own.

Christopher lived in an incubator for the first month of his life. David and I were able to hold him and even change

his teeny tiny diaper very carefully. There were so many difficulties that first month, I can’t even count. We were blessed to be able to live right beside the hospital at the Ronald McDonald House the whole time, which enabled us to see him all day, every day.

The emotions that go along with an experience like this are almost too hard to put into words. On the days he was thriving, I was on top of the world. On the days we would arrive only to hear he had a bad night, I was a basket case until the news got better. My faith in God carried me through from the time I knew Christopher was going to be born. My faith in God is still carrying me, giving me the energy to chase my little munchkin around the house as he crawls and gets into literally everything!

I believe wholeheartedly that all of the support and prayers from family and friends helped Christopher thrive the way he did. We finally went home on October 5th when Christopher was only four pounds. From then on, Christopher has grown and developed into the perfect 10-month old baby he is today.

One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is.” — Albert Einstein.

UNLOCK YOUR INNER POWER

The human mind is a powerful entity, and by learning to harness its power, you can set yourself on the road to achieving great success and happiness.

What sets human beings apart is a highly evolved brain that enables them to perceive reality in a truly unique way. Not only can we use our senses, but we can also employ our powers of imagination. We can dream up our own realities, and we have the power to manifest them, as well.

YOU HAVE THE POWER

We all possess the ability to unleash the power of the mind and alter our reality in positive ways, but many people have a hard time grasping the abstractness of this truth. For this reason, most people go through life dreaming and imagining, but at the same time, resisting their true desires.

The law of attraction states that we attract what we consistently hold in our thoughts and imagination. However, merely thinking is not enough. We must learn to believe that our desires are valid and can become reality. In addition, we must be prepared to take effective action at the right time and learn to allow our dreams to come true.

LIMITING BELIEFS

Just as we have the ability to believe in things unseen, we also have the ability to restrict ourselves severely from achieving our goals by setting up self-imposed limitations. To illustrate how limiting beliefs are formed, consider the information you received from the authority figures in your early life. Maybe your mother declared that you had an uncontrollable temper after a particularly dramatic tantrum. Or perhaps your father told you that you probably wouldn’t be able to make it through medical school so you should put your efforts into a nursing degree. You were most likely inclined to accept these beliefs as truth because they came from trusted authority figures — your parents. In much the same way, you continue this process in adulthood, except you are now the authority figure. To unleash our own inner power, these assumptions should be

questioned often. Is your temper indeed uncontrollable? Why can’t you go to medical school?

FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT

As you go inward and begin to modify what you have always believed about yourself, you also begin to reconnect with your authentic self. In doing so, it’s important to focus on what you want in your life. The tendency of many at this stage is to focus on the things they don’t want. But if you do this, you will inadvertently manifest more of what you do not desire. For example, if a person desires to lose weight, quite often they think of how much they hate the way they look like and how much they wish they could stop eating donuts. However, those thoughts keep the mind sharply focused on what is presently manifested in reality: your undesirable reflection and your donut addiction. Instead, employ your imagination and dream up what the new you will look like. Likewise, mentally practice going through the day eating good-for-you foods and feeling energized and renewed. This is the kind of thinking that will bring about change in your life. This is using your inner power.

BE PATIENT

Many people start enthused about notion of being able to change their reality. But these same people give up after a week or two when they don’t see any changes. Societal conditioning may be to blame. We are conditioned to expect things to happen instantly. Think of fast food and drive-thru banking. In reality, however, not everything is about getting instant gratification. Many of the more important things in life change over time and require a bit of patience. Don’t give up.

We possess the inner power to change our lives, though there are things we must do to bring that power to the surface and enable us to use it for our benefit. First off, we must embark on an inward journey and be willing to adjust the errors in our own belief system. Then we must also be willing to stretch our imagination to its full capacity. And ultimately, our power will appear when we learn to employ patience.

MENCOURAGEM

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED...

Admit it! You don’t like to do it either! Your wife convinces you that your home will never be complete without that special piece of furniture at the Swedish furniture store. The only problem is it comes in a box that is too heavy for you to carry by yourself, and tucked deep inside the cardboard and Styrofoam packaging is a little plastic bag filled with nuts and bolts, an Allen wrench, and the all-important instruction sheet. You really don’t like to read those sheets, and you sure don’t think you need it!

I suspect I could have added at least three years to my life expectancy if I had only read the whole instruction sheet before joining part L-94 to P-27 with the hex-ended, super-spinner support brace. I mean, after all, it looked right from the picture.

So the reality is men don’t like reading instructions. We don’t especially like looking at maps or asking for directions. Not only that, we never read those warning boxes that pop up on our computer screens giving us the choices of OK or cancel, and we won’t go to a counselor or pastor for relationship or marriage advice unless we are coerced.

Here is the problem: we picture ourselves as the “quintessential problem-solver.” To ask for help or advice seems to many of us as a failure to be the rescuer, fixer, and all-around knight in shining armor we envision ourselves to be. I am afraid even though we have been hardwired by the influences of our age to think of ourselves like this, we are missing a huge benefit by not seeking good counsel. We think it makes us look weak or helpless to ask for solid advice or instructions, and the reality is when we don’t, our lives end up looking like the Swedish furniture that I botched by not reading the manual. It’s not pretty!

The sad truth of the matter is many men will not seek help until things have reached the tipping point. More times than I can count, men come into my office seeking counsel after their wives have started separation or divorce procedures, and they want to meet once or twice, get a list of 10 things to do, and have their issues resolved. Life and relationships simply do not work that way. Too many of us have the mentality

that relationships can be helped and healed the same way a physician prescribes a medication: “Take two of these pills daily for 14 days and the infection will be gone.”

We men might do better with the whole idea of counseling and relationship advice if we simply re-named what we call it. If we simply re-name it “coaching,” most of us can get our heads around that. There is nothing weak or helpless about being coached. I played college soccer on a team that went to the regional finals many years ago. It was the very first college soccer team Belhaven College (now a university) ever had. We started as a group of young men who loved the sport and decided to form a team. We had no uniforms, no schedules, no fitness regimen, no cheerleaders, and worst of all, no coach. We would have remained simply a group of guys who liked to play soccer without coaching. But with our coach and his advice, we were able to excel and take second place in our region in three short years. Sometimes his advice was gentle; sometimes his counsel was harsh and demanding; other times it was simply encouragement and applause.

Gentlemen, we need to be willing to seek and follow good coaching in our relationships and stop thinking of it as a weakness. It is a sign of wisdom and courage to seek the advice of others who have the answers we need. If it is true that men and women are from distinct planets — men from Mars and women from Venus — and each gender is acclimated to its own planet’s society and customs, but not to those of the other, we really do need to see the manliness of seeking out good coaches. The wisdom of these words stand as true today as they did when they were penned long ago: “Through presumption comes nothing but strife, but with those who receive counsel is wisdom.”

Change the word counsel to coaching, and you have got it!

DIRECTION

CHOOSING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Hiring a financial advisor is no small decision, and not one to be taken lightly. Finding an advisor who truly puts your interests first can provide tremendous value, but choosing the wrong person can put your financial future at risk.

Before you meet with a financial professional, take the time to compile some important questions. Getting answers to key questions should be a major part of the interview process for every financial advisor you consider. How the advisor answers your questions should play a large part in deciding whether to entrust him or her with your hardearned wealth.

How are you compensated?

This is one of the most important questions you can ask. Fee-only financial advisors are compensated solely by their clients (that’s you). They derive no income from the investments they recommend, and they get no commission when you purchase a particular investment. On the other hand, commission-based financial advisors derive their income from the investments they buy or sell. Some advisors combine elements of fee-only advisors with elements of commission-based advisors, depending on the needs of the client.

Ultimately, it is not the method of compensation that is most important, but rather that you understand how you are paying. Before deciding to work with an advisor, make sure you know what his or her services are going to cost you and that

everything is explained clearly to you.

What experience do you have?

The financial advisor you choose will need to help you make vital financial decisions in good times and bad. An advisor who has never managed money through difficult times, or who has never helped someone with circumstances similar to your own, may be ill equipped to assist in the way you need. Make sure the advisor you select has a level of experience about which you can feel confident. You should also do some research into the background and education of your potential financial advisor since both can have a profound impact on the quality of advice and the level of service you receive.

What services do you provide?

When you first seek out the help of a financial advisor, you might be looking strictly for investment advice and guidance. But as your financial needs becomes more complex, you might need a more comprehensive set of services. Choosing a financial advisor who works closely with reputable accountants and attorneys to provide tax advice and estate-planning services can be very beneficial. Furthermore, we recommend selecting an advisor who is committed to educating you through free workshops, conference calls, newsletters, and other events.

You should also be aware that some insurance agents present themselves as financial advisors, though they do not actually hold the necessary licenses to

sell investments. In such cases, they may pressure you to purchase a product they are allowed to sell rather than the one that is best for your circumstances.

Are you properly licensed by the federal and state government?

Financial advisors need to register with a variety of state and Federal agencies, so it is important to check the registration status of every financial advisor you interview. Each state has a different set of licensing laws and disclosure requirements, so you will need to check the requirements in your own state and make sure the fi is properly registered and licensed.

You will also need to make sure there are no outstanding complaints or charges against the firm. Each state keeps its own database of disciplinary actions against fi and checking that database is essential as you shop for a financial advisor.

Working with a fi two-way street, and it’s important to ensure that you are comfortable and your needs are being met. It is critical that your questions are taken seriously; a trusted professional will take time to answer each question and put you at ease. Feel free to add your own and never be afraid to ask too many questions.

HOW SAFE IS THE “SAFE”

PART OF YOUR PORTFOLIO?

Just when investors feel they have recovered from the stock market crash of 2008, a new threat could potentially hit portfolios in an area many think of as safer than stocks: the bond market.

Recent headlines like “Danger Lurks Inside the Bond Boom” (The Wall Street Journal), “How Banks Could Get Blown Away by Bond Bubble” (Fortune), and “Beware the Bond Bubble in 2013” (CNN Money) are raising real concerns among investors that the bond bubble is reaching a breaking point.

What is the problem?

Interest rates are at historic lows. That makes bond prices relatively high with virtually nowhere left for rates to go but up. That might be good news for bond buyers in the future, but terrible for those stuck with bonds at low rates.

Bond funds, a favorite of conservative investors and those nearing retirement, would be hit particularly hard as their existing holdings would rapidly lose value.

Why worry now?

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke recently spoke about the path ‘quantitative easing’ (QE) — the Fed’s bond-buying program aimed at lowering interest rates, raising bond yields, and spurring economic growth — may take in coming months.

Under QE, a central bank purchases government bonds from private sector companies or institutions (typically insurance companies, pension funds, and Wall Street banks).

Since Bernanke’s comments about QE aired, it has been like watching a game of ‘telephone’ where one child whispers something to another child and that child whispers to another child and so on until the last child says out loud what he believes he heard. By then, the original message has been transformed.

Bernanke actually said (using an analogy about driving a vehicle for clarity): “…if the incoming data support the view that the economy is able to sustain a reasonable cruising speed, we will ease the

pressure on the accelerator by gradually reducing the pace of (bond) purchases. However, any need to consider applying the brakes by raising short-term rates is still far in the future. In any case, no matter how conditions may evolve, the Federal Reserve remains committed to fostering substantial improvement in the outlook for the labor market in a context of price stability.”

But once this had been filtered through analysts and media outlets and finally reached investors, what investors heard was “sell.”

That sell message then rippled through stock, bond, and other markets around the world. As markets fell, interest rates rose. Investors’ fears were reflected in the so-called investor fear gauge known as the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), which measures the market’s expectations for volatility during the next 30-day period. The week of the news conference, the VIX started the week at 10.2 percent and finished at 19. An equity strategist quoted in The Wall Street Journal shortly after Bernanke’s comments said, “…there are much higher probabilities for market gains when the VIX is between 10 and 15 than when it is in the 20-25 range...”

So, will markets settle? Or, will volatility continue?

Only time will tell.

There are questions that require answering: “How long will QE continue?” “Will it be tapered slowly?” “Are there increasing doubts about continuing QE past this summer?”

Markets are watching for clues about what the Fed’s are thinking and how the bond and equity (stock) markets would react to a change in the QE rate.

So far, there is sensitivity that Bernanke may be overestimating the strength of the U.S. recovery and underestimating what tighter money could do to the economy. There are fears that mortgages that are more expensive could topple the still-fragile American housing market.

That said, according to Bernanke, the Fed might not actually raise rates in a meaningful way for at least the next few years. In fact, he named an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent as the Fed’s threshold for pulling back.

What to do?

The answer to the concerns raised about bonds will be different for each individual investor. Caution is warranted not just for fixedincome investors who are looking for relative steadiness, but for investors in all risk assets.

Anticipating this change, we have developed numerous options for clients to consider when protecting their long-term, “conservative” assets while still generating returns beyond a savings account or CD.

To find out how the changes in the bond market will affect your investments and what you should watch out for, the best course is to talk to an independent advisor who has successfully navigated market and economic cycles and is flexible enough to look at your best interest.

STOP OVER-PAYING FOR HEARING AIDS

An honest and informative opinion about the hearing aid business

by

Don E. Smith, HAS

Fact Is... Many people who wear hearing aids know which manufacturer made it. Some don’t even know that. Some may even know which model. Most have no idea. Unfortunately, too few are actually sure. Most people don’t realize that within each model there are several different levels of technology from entry to premium. To itemize just a few differences without getting complex, some of the differences include how many programs, channels, bands, sound filters, automatic features, and wireless capabilities. There are many more differences.

Many people think simply because a Hearing Aid model was represented to be from a leading manufacturer that it is the best offering in that model. That, unfortunately, may not be completely accurate. It may be a well-built hearing aid from a great manufacturer, but may not have the highest level or the current tech-

nology that manufacturer offers in that model. Nearly every manufacturer has distinct levels of technology within each assortment of models. This can seriously confuse most consumers, placing them in a position where they may be taken advantage of. Unfortunately, there are some sales people who choose to enhance their commissions by selling the least amount of technology for the most amount of money. I have actually seen sales trainers who teach these selling tactics.

Be sure to avoid these selling tactics and the people who apply them. Ask questions about the technology you are buying and get the answers in writing. Be sure to make certain of the level of technology in the model being offered, why that model is being recommended, how it applies to your hearing loss, how beneficial is it to your hearing loss, how it will fit into and enhance your lifestyle, is it nationally warranted and for how long, what is the life expectancy, are there patient testimonials and referrals available, most importantly is it the best fit for your loss, and is it the best value for your money. Your hearing is one of your most important senses. It is clearly an asset that keeps us connected

with one another. With today’s technologies, properly fit hearing aids are life changing. Be sure you know the difference between being sold and being helped.

People often ask us why hearing aids are so expensive at some other places and how can ours be so much less for the same models. Our answer is simple. We are truly independent. When we decided to open Corrective Hearing Centers we designed a new business model that cut out all of the middle men and handlers. We buy direct from leading manufacturers, bypassing second or third parties that charge an array of fees and commissions – fees and commissions that sometimes double, even triple, the actual cost of the product. Our owner, Don Smith-HAS, operates the practice himself, therefore eliminating sales commissions completely – sales commissions that drive your cost up by as much as 30%. We are also not a franchise, saving you virtually all of those very expensive corporate fees and commissions.

We operate under a volume sales format which keeps our per patient profit very low. When you factor and expense into a product all of the fees, commissions, and high profit margins some may charge, an inexpensive

product becomes very expensive. We have actually seen some competitors mark their hearing aids up as much as 400% to 800%. Our business model completely eliminates the expenses that make hearing aids expensive, automatically saving our patients huge sums of money.

At Corrective Hearing Centers, we fit products only from the industry’s top manufacturers. Our patients tell us that our Hearing Test and Evaluation is the most complete that they have ever experienced. There are absolutely no short cuts in our testing procedures. We also conduct a complete lifestyle interview to firmly establish our patients’ needs, wants, and hearing expectations. We make 100% certain that we comfortably fit the right style of product produced by the best manufacturer that affordably best fits your hearing loss and lifestyle. At Corrective Hearing Centers, your complete satisfaction is not only promised, it is guaranteed in writing.

If you or somebody you know is looking for state-ofthe-art care and best products available, fit by a leading professional for the guaranteed lowest price, look no further than Corrective Hearing Centers.

Why Do You Need A SPECIALIST?

Having hip surgery often meant months of recovery. Today, however, specialists such as Dr. John T. Williams have helped countless numbers of patients back on their feet more quickly with minimally invasive surgical procedures.

“No one should accept joint pain as a part of aging,” says Dr. Williams, who specializes in the minimally invasive anterior approach method of hip replacements. “At Tri-County Orthopaedics, we strive to help patients regain their quality of life as quickly as possible.”

Formerly the director of total joint replacement for 11 years at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Dr. Williams is the most recent board certified orthopaedic surgeon to join the staff at Tri-County Orthopaedics. He is the author of numerous articles about anterior approach hip surgeries, and he has trained surgeons throughout the country. A graduate of the Howard University School of Medicine, Dr. Williams completed fellowship training at the Joint Implant Surgeons, Inc., an orthopaedic surgery practice specializing in total hip and total knee replacements as well as orthopaedic research. EXPERTISE MATTERS.

Our specialties include:

• Total Joint Replacement

• Arthritis Evaluation

• Non-Surgical Back Evaluation

• Osteoporosis Evaluation

• Physical Therapy

• Diagnostic Radiology

• Sports Medicine

• Shoulder Surgery

• Foot & Ankle Surgery

ASK THE DOC

Q: What causes vein disease?

A: Vein disease occurs when veins have trouble carrying blood from your legs back to your heart. Healthy veins have one-way valves to ensure blood flows in one direction, toward the heart. When valves fail or leak, the blood flows backward, causing a reflux of blood that pools in the veins. The increased pressure from the pooling stretches the vein, which can result in vein disease. Varicose and spider veins, heaviness, cramping, swelling, itching, tissue damage and ulceration can occur.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO FEEL GREAT.

“My first choice of surgeons is one who thinks surgery is the last choice.”

I’ve performed thousands of successful surgeries and am one of the first in the area to perform Anterior Approach hip replacement surgery, which allows entry from the front of the hip for a faster and easier recovery. But 9 out of 10 times I’m able to help people using a non-surgical approach. Because even as a surgeon, I’m not about the “pitch” - I’m about the home run.

DON’T BE KNEE DEEP IN PAIN

If you are suffering from osteoarthritis in your knee, you no longer need to undergo traditional knee surgery. That was the message Dr. Jon Radnothy conveyed to a group of curious onlookers at The Villages Center for Health. Radnothy, an orthopedic surgeon in Tavares, talked about a new procedure called MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing. With assistance from a robotic arm, Dr. Radnothy can spare healthy bone and tissue, thus allowing patients to enjoy a quicker recovery time and return to an active lifestyle.

Our Patients Say It Best...

Like many residents who reside in The Villages, Mary Beth Kensell enjoys being active. An avid golfer, Mary Beth’s typical day also consists of walking three miles and playing pickle ball.

Of course, those activities became severely limited when she developed a hammertoe on her right foot around a year ago. “I already had a bunion on my right foot that I was going to keep forever,” she says. “However, the hammertoe was the last straw. I was too young to be so limited in the activities I enjoy.”

She asked numerous residents in The Villages whom they would recommend to treat her ailing foot. The majority of them suggested Tri-County Podiatry. Mary Beth met Dr. Felix Esarey and was immediately impressed by his knowledge and friendliness, so much so that she underwent a bunionectomy and hammertoe procedure on March 1st.

She is healing nicely and once again enjoying her favorite activities to the fullest.

“He is a wonderful man and a wonderful podiatrist,” she says. “He is very warm, compassionate, and caring. I also respect how he was so forthright about the good, bad, and ugly of the procedures I underwent. You do not always get that kind of honesty these days. If I ever develop other foot problems, I feel good knowing that he is a short drive away.”
