hen Stacey Abrams ran and lost to Brian Kemp in a closely-contested governor’s race in 2018, she captured the country’s attention. With a growing national profile, Abrams could have taken a spot in D.C. in running for the House or Senate, but she instead plotted for 2020 in a different way. Between her loss in 2018 and the 2020 presidential election, Abrams entered icon status for her voter outreach efforts. She built her national profile in her own way, showed Georgia to be the swing state it is, and now is back to take what she lost four years ago.

A LONG-AWAITED REMATCH
On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Abrams announced her bid for governor, setting up a possible rematch with Kemp. Her campaign also carries historic significance: If she is successful, she would become the first Black governor of Georgia and the first Black woman to serve as governor of any state.
