ffort and conviction have their rewards. Orlando Rendon’s parents, who came to Philadelphia from Brooklyn when he was five years old, set a great example early on. As a member of an organization called United Neighbors Against Drugs, his mother would chase away the dealers sitting on a corner in her neighborhood. She taught him to give until it hurt in whatever he did. And he has followed through. Today, he is the deputy managing director of Philadelphia’s Community Services. But it is nothing new for him to have a thousand responsibilities on his back. He used to be the Deputy Commissioner of Programming at Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. After 26 years in ASPIRA, a nonprofit supporting Latinos in Philadelphia, he got a post in the city government. He achieved impressive results in less than five years: from $1,8 million to $70 million in funding and from 12 to 700 people in his team. Alongside Orlando Rendon’s story, in this issue you may also find details on judge Patricia Guerrero’s appointment, the first Latina in the California Supreme Court. She is the daughter of Mexican migrants and grew up in the agricultural Imperial Valley. She has been a prosecutor, a law firm partner and a Superior Court judge. Her late mother could not enjoy this historic moment. But her teachings are still alive. “She showed us the importance of family. She showed us to thank God for our blessings. And she showed us that we should help other people when we can. She sacrificed everything for us,” said Patricia Guerrero. In the culture section is the story of bookstore La Mistral, in Madrid, named after Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American writer to win the Nobel Literature Prize. The place opened in the middle of the pandemic by three Argentinian friends. AL DÍA interviewed Andrea Stefanoni, who tells how, when and where this dream came true. The conclusion from these three stories is that it is possible to hold on to an idea and fight for it until it is achieved.z

l esfuerzo y la convicción tienen sus reconocimientos. Orlando Rendón se formó desde niño en el ejemplo de sus padres, que llegaron a Filadelfia desde Brooklyn cuando tenía cinco años. Su mamá trabajó para la organización United Neighbors Against Drugs (Vecinos Unidos contra las Drogas) y de noche espantaba a los expendedores en una esquina del barrio. Ella le enseñó a dar hasta el cansancio en lo que hiciera. Y así ha sido siempre. Hoy es el subdirector de operaciones de Servicios a la Comunidad de Filadelfia, en donde tiene sobre sus espaldas mil responsabilidades. Pero no es nada nuevo para él. Antes fue vicecomisionado del Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Filadelfia. Llegó a un cargo en el gobierno de la ciudad después de estar por 26 años en ASPIRA, organización sin ánimo de lucro a favor de los latinos de Filadelfia. Allí logró unos resultados de crecimiento impresionantes en menos de cinco años: de tener fondos por $1,8 millones a $70 millones y de 12 a 700 personas en el equipo. La vida de Orlando Rendón es la historia de esta edición, que también cuenta detalles del nombramiento de la jueza Patricia Guerrero, la primera latina en la Corte Suprema de California. Es hija de migrantes mexicanos. Creció en la región agrícola de Valle Imperial. Ha sido fiscal, socia de una firma de abogados y jueza del Tribunal Superior. Su mamá falleció recientemente y no pudo vivir este momento histórico. Pero tiene claras las enseñanzas que ella le dejó. “Nos mostró la importancia de la familia. Nos enseñó a agradecerle a Dios por nuestras bendiciones. Y nos mostró que debíamos ayudar a otros cuando pudiéramos. Sacrificó todo por nosotros”, contó Patricia Guerrero. En la sección de Cultura va la historia de la librería ‘La Mistral’, en Madrid, llamada así en homenaje a la escritora chilena Gabriela Mistral, primera latinoamericana que ganó el Nobel de Literatura. El sitio fue abierto en plena pandemia por tres amigos argentinos. AL DÍA entrevistó a Andrea Stefanoni, quien cuenta cómo, cuándo y dónde se hizo realidad este sueño. With a valuable and powerful message that invites Latina businesswomen and executives to empower themselves and embrace their origins and culture in each workplace as a tool that allows them to stand out and grow professionally, HACR’s 2022 Latina Empow(h) er Summit was held last week in Orlando, Florida from March 21-23. In addition to recognizing the incredible potential that a Latina woman brings to any type of organization, the event sought to provide attendees with elements of support to advance their careers and climb the ladder in the competitive corporate world.
Through the different talks presented during the convention, it was highlighted how the Latina woman brings an enormous degree of diversity and professionalism to any business scenario in which she participates, standing out for her great adaptability capacity and flexibility, as well as for her respectful manner of approaching a different culture, always learning and expanding their knowledge, discovering elements in common and embracing differences. Ileana Musa, Head of International Banking and Lending at Morgan Stanley, highlighted that Latinas and Latinos do not spend enough time thinking about the advantages that their environment brings them in the midst of a corporate career, noting that “there is great value in bringing biculturality to the workplace, which becomes an X factor that allows them to stand out from other candidates.” The Latina Empow(h)er Summit was also established as a space, not only to recognize the extraordinary work of Latina women in different executive positions throughout the United States, but also to promote a new generation of professionals who will be able to demonstrate their limitless abilities to succeed in their positions and lead their companies to success. “We are innovators and forward thinkers,” highlighted Gloria Bailey, SVP, Market Executive at Bank of America Corp, pointing out how these qualities are precisely what companies seek to grow both nationally and internationally, going from being a legal requirement of inclusion, to a true philosophy of cultural diversity used to strengthen

En las diferentes presentaciones de la convención, se resaltó que la mujer latina lleva un alto grado de diversidad y profesionalismo a cualquier escenario de trabajo del que haga parte; distinguiéndose por su capacidad de adaptación y flexibilidad, así como por su trato respetuoso hacia diferentes culturas, siempre aprendiendo y expandiendo su conocimiento, descubriendo elementos en común y abriendo los brazos a las diferencias. uring a week that saw all eyes on Congress as Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson fielded questions from the Senate on the road to her historic appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, history was also made across the country in California’s highest court. On Tuesday, March 22, Patricia Guerrero, a San Diego appeals court judge, was confirmed as the first Latina to serve on the California Supreme Court. Guerrero was approved with a 3-0 vote from the Commission on Judicial Appointment to fill the vacancy left by Associate Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar. Cuéllar stepped down last year to become president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. California Gov. Newsom prioritized diversity on the bench. In 2020, he nominated the first openly gay justice, Martin Jenkins, who is also the third Black person to serve on the court.
MEXICAN ROOTS
Guerrero is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Her grandfather came to the U.S. from Sonora and obtained residency through a sponsor. When her father, Jorge Guerrero, arrived in California, he picked crops and later worked in the agricultural industry. “As I’ve tried to express, this is not just about me, or really even just about my parents, but it’s about so many others just like us,” Guerrero said. When Jorge arrived at his daughter’s confirmation hearing on Tuesday, he was sporting cowboy boots and sat in the front row with pride, alongside Guerre-

El 22 de marzo se ratificó a Patricia Guerrero, jueza del Tribunal de Apelaciones de San Diego, como la primera latina en hacer parte de la Corte Suprema de California. Guerrero was applauded by colleagues and panelists including Attorney General Rob Bonta and Supreme Court Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. “Justice Guerrero is phenomenal on multiple levels. She is universally labeled for her superior intellect, clear writing, judicial temperament, work ethic and compassion,” said Stella Nagi, chair of the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation.

n early February, Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar and a group of her House colleagues introduced the Dignity Act, a comprehensive immigration reform bill consisting of three core principles. The Dignity Act, which was written in consultation with American business leaders, agriculture and farming industries, the faith-based community, immigration reform groups, and border security experts, seeks to enact a 10-year program providing renewable legal status and an additional option to pursue permanent legalization. In constructing the bill, Salazar applied takeaways she got from examining the last extensive immigration reform bill to be enacted with such expansive legalization programs, the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. Salazar discovered that only a third of the almost 3 million undocumented

ENGLISH immigrants the IRCA legalized actually became citizens. The other 2 million were content to have a legal status that allowed them to live and work in the United States. Last March, Salazar announced her vision through the Dignity Plan.
A NEW PATH TO CITIZENSHIP
Salazar claims that the legislation, a 532-page reform package, could both create a new path to citizenship while also strengthening the border. The bill would create a program that permits immigrants to enter the country illegally and stay and work in the U.S. at a cost of $1,000 annually for up to 10 years. Money raised through the program would fund workforce training programs available to U.S. workers now. Workers on the “dignity path” can

Salazar, who is the daughter of Cuban refugees, told the Tampa Bay Times that her initiative is the only “reasonable” immigration bill currently in Congress. “My community sent me to Washington, D.C. to fight for them, and I’m doing just that with my Dignity Act. It is the right thing to do for my district, for our state, and for America,” she said. Some Latino leaders in Florida told the Tampa Bay Times that the bill is a good step in the right direction, but human rights activists and DREAMers themselves don’t see it that way. “The Dignity Act affords them the peace of mind, that, if they do what citizens in this country are asked to do — obey the law and pay their taxes — the government will accept them,” said Eli González, founder and president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Pinellas County.

ever in a million years did Orlando Rendon think he would work in city government. “I would have sworn I would have died as a nonprofit head and just being grassroots at that level, extremely small scale,” said Rendon in a recent interview with AL DÍA News. At the time, he was chief operating officer of ASPIRA, a longtime Latino-centered education nonprofit based in North Philadelphia. In his 26 years there, from student to leader, Rendon saw the organization empowering Latino students grow from an entity with a little over $1 million in funding explode into a $65 or $70 million operation. It wasn’t small, but the nonprofit, like any business in the whole of Philadelphia, was still beholden to the decisions made in city government. When Rendon was offered his first city government post as Deputy Commissioner of Programs in Philadelphia’s Parks
ENGLISH and Recreation Department, he turned it down. That is, until he was posed a question that would change his life. “Do you want to be a thermostat or thermometer?” he was asked by an older gentleman during the recruitment process. It confused Rendon at first, but as it was explained, the message of differing impacts became clear. “If you’re a thermometer, you’re just taking the temperature of the room. You’re making things real, but whatever is happening it’s already controlled, you’re just working with it,” he said. “You have an opportunity to be a thermostat. You can change, engage in terms of what’s happening around you — make it cooler, make it hotter.”

He was Brooklyn born, but moved to 5th and Dauphin with his family when he was five years-old. Growing up, Rendon said he and his siblings couldn’t enjoy the neighborhood they grew up in because of the crime and drugs. Through to when he hit high school in the early 90s was the height of the drug wars in Philadelphia, and crack cocaine was the number one seller on the city’s corners. “It was extremely difficult,” said Rendon. In the face of that difficulty, his family was resilient. Rendon’s parents were extremely civically engaged — his father was a police officer, and his mother pitched into the community as a parttime educator. They also volunteered at a number of organizations fighting the crime wave in the community. As part of one, United Neighbors Against Drugs, Rendon’s mother would sit on a corner in the neighborhood with a hard hat at night and drive away the dealers. “Give till it hurts,” was one of the many philosophies he said he took away from his parents’ civic engagement. They also emphasized the importance of getting an education as a way out of their situation.
grew within ASPIRA teach life skills to kids after hours at local high schools, and went on to do a whole lot more over the next 26 years. “Program coordination, program development, management, fiscal operations, operations managing, you name it, you did it,” said Rendon. In that time, he also saw the organization hit a major growth spurt, going beyond the individual classroom education strategy, and wanting to create education spaces that were all their own. “Let’s be the educators and make that difference and the impact ourselves,” said Rendon of the changing mission. Funding-wise, the organization’s pool went from $1.8 million to $70 million in less than five years as its staff also grew from 12 to around 700. “It was baptism by Inferno, not even fire. But the passion that our folks had to make this work, it was just 24 hoursa-day nonstop to ensure what we were doing,” said Rendon. “We knew it was for the right reason, but we had to be sure we had it right.” It is off the back of that experience of growing with an organization like ASPIRA, when Rendon was asked to make the transition to Parks and Rec at the city level.

ASPIRA’S IMPACT
Rendon attended Central High School before going on to Temple University and graduating. It was at the former, where he first encountered ASPIRA. Then, a small organization in North Philly focused on bringing some Latino cultural programming to neighborhood schools, ASPIRA’s mission struck a chord with Rendon. At Central, he was one of the few Latino students in the entire school. “We want to make sure that your voices are heard, that you don’t get lost, that it is important in terms of what you want and what you believe in,” said Rendon of their message. He joined up shortly after meeting the group, and was appointed a delegate to the organization’s Union of Students to start. Rendon stayed in touch following his graduation from high school and would go on to help run community improvement programs called Next Up centers. When he graduated college, Rendon

When he finally joined after some initial resistance, Rendon was Deputy Commissioner of Programs. The position had him oversee more than 150 recreation centers, swimming pools, older adult centers, ice-skating rinks, and environmental centers throughout Philadelphia. Rendon said the early days at the city were difficult, given his unfamiliarity with processes and at an agency he didn’t know, but credits his team with understanding and allowing him to grow into his role. “I gained the respect that it’s not about a title, it’s not about a paycheck, it’s about a process in terms of what you do. They ensured that I was going to succeed because they needed to succeed,” he said. He also gave credit to the many people he met running rec centers across the city. In Rendon’s mind, they were community APRIL 6 - 13, 2022
PORTADA centers, and the leaders in charge of them he called community CEOs. Very much like his experience at ASPIRA, these leaders operated far outside their job descriptions on limited budgets, and still got the job done. “It wasn’t about the struggle, it was like: ‘How are we going to overcome it?’” said Rendon. That struggle waned no more than amid the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city. As the city shut down, community centers became places of hope, where food and other basic need drives were held. Even before COVID, Rendon managed the largest out-of-school time food service program in the city, delivering meals to more than 2 million kids. He also oversaw the city’s Summer Work Ready program, which has provided work opportunities to upwards of 1,300 youth between 14 and 18. After six years in his role, Rendon was offered his current new position of Deputy Managing Director for Community Services to replace the outgoing Joanna Otero-Cruz. In reflecting on Otero-Cruz’s departure, Rendon cited their good relation-
ship, and her constant support of his efforts at Parks and Rec. “She was such a great individual, and a great partner,” he said. When first hearing his name was in the running to be her replacement, Rendon admitted he was shocked because he had only been at the city for six years. On the flipside, he was also grateful because it meant people were noticing the work he put in. “I’m not a politics guy. It’s always about the politics on the street in terms of what people need and how they need to get it,” said Rendon. Whatever I need to do to make that happen, I think that’s been noticed. I think that’s been seen.
Goal number one beyond getting acclimated with the workflow, Rendon said it’s important for all his programs to get back to as close to operating at full capacity as possible. “They were not exempt that every city department had to go through during cuts,” he said. “Our folks are stretched, they’re doing the work, but we don’t want people to burn out.” Beyond that, Rendon emphasized the need to continue marketing and spreading the word about the services that are available to residents in the city.

When confronting the criticism, Rendon said the important thing to be is transparent. “You let people know exactly where you are, and where you stand, and what obstacles and challenges that you face as a city,” he said. Of the team carrying out the work, Rendon said they very much come from the same cut of cloth as himself. “I see, in terms of what I was instilled with, our folks really give till it hurts, they don’t stop,” said Rendon. z

Nació en Brooklyn, pero se cambió a la 5ª y Dauphin con su familia cuando tenía cinco años. Rendón dijo que él y sus hermanos no pudieron disfrutar del vecindario en el que crecieron debido al crimen y las drogas. Las guerras por las drogas en Filadelfia estuvieron en su cúspide hasta el momento en que él llegó a la secundaria, a principios de la década del 90 cuando el crac era la droga más vendida en las esquinas de la ciudad. “Fue muy difícil”, dijo Rendón. En el aspecto de recursos, los fondos de la organización aumentaron de $1.8 millones a $70 millones en menos de cinco años, y su personal también creció de 12 a 700 personas. “Fue un bautismo del infierno. La pasión que nuestros compañeros tenían para que esto funcionara estaba allí, eran las 24 del día sin parar para asegurar lo que estábamos haciendo”, dijo Rendón. “Sabíamos que la causa lo ameritaba, pero teníamos que cerciorarnos de que estuviera bien hecho”.

Cuando finalmente se unió después de resistirse inicialmente, Rendón fue vicecomisionado de programas. En este puesto debía supervisar más de 150 centros recreativos, piscinas, centros para adultos mayores, pistas de patinaje sobre hielo, y centros ambientales en todo Filadelfia.
Rendón dijo que los primeros días en la ciudad fueron difíciles, por su falta de familiaridad con los procesos, y además en una agencia que no conocía, pero él le da el crédito a su equipo por su comprensión y por permitirle crecer en este rol. “Me gané el respeto que no tiene que ver con un título, ni con un cheque, sino con un proceso en términos de lo que haces. Muy parecido a lo que sucedía en ASPIRA, estos líderes hacían sus operaciones saliéndose de las funciones del cargo con presupuestos limitados, y aun así cumplían con el trabajo. “El problema no eran las dificultades, en vez de eso decíamos: ‘¿Cómo las vamos a solucionar?’”, dijo Rendón. Esas dificultades no se disminuyeron en los primeros días de la pandemia de la COVID-19 en la ciudad. Cuando la ciudad cerró, los centros comunitarios se convirtieron en lugares de esperanza, donde se encontraba comida y se ofrecían servicios para otras necesidades básicas. Incluso antes de la COVID, Rendón manejó el programa de servicios de comida fuera de horas escolares más grande de la ciudad, que entregaba comidas a más de 2 millones de niños. También supervisó el programa Listo para el Trabajo de Verano de la ciudad, que ha dado oportunidades de trabajo a más de 1.300 jóvenes entre 14 y 18 años. Después de seis años en este papel, le ofrecieron a Rendón su posición actual de subdirector de operaciones de Servicios a la Comunidad para reemplazar a la saliente Joanna Otero-Cruz. Al pensar en la partida de Otero-Cruz, Rendón habló de su Buena relación, y de su constante apoyo a sus esfuerzos en Parques y Recreación. “Fue una gran persona, y una excelente compañera”, dijo. Cuando escuchó que su nombre estaba compitiendo para su reemplazo, Rendón admitió que quedó impactado porque solo había estado en el cargo seis años. Pero por otro lado, también se sintió agradecido porque eso quería decir que las personas estaban notando el trabajo que él aportaba. “No soy una persona de política. En la calle siempre se oye de política en el sentido de lo que la gente necesita y cómo necesitan conseguirlo”, dijo Rendón. Cualquier cosa que yo haya necesitado para lograr eso, creo que lo han notado. Creo que se ha visto.
RECONOCIMIENTO AL TRABAJO
Oficialmente lo promovieron el 7 de febrero de 2022, con lo que heredó un portafolio que incluye a agencias de la ciudad, entre ellas la Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigración, 311, el Programa Comunitario de Mejoramiento de la Vida (CLIP), Mural Arts Philadelphia, PHLCity ID, Philly Counts, y el Equipo de Cuidado y Control Animal de Filadelfia (ACCT Philly). Para Rendón, la meta número uno, aun más importante que aclimatarse al ritmo de trabajo, es acercarse tanto como sea posible a operar a capacidad plena en todos sus programas. “Ellos no quedaron exentos de lo que todos los otros departamentos de la ciudad tuvieron que atravesar durante los recortes” dijo. “Nuestros compañeros están sobrecargados, están haciendo el trabajo, pero no queremos que la gente se queme”. Aparte de eso, Rendón enfatizó la necesidad de continuar con el mercadeo y seguir corriendo la voz acerca de los servicios que están disponibles para los residentes de la ciudad.

Dentro de su esfera también se encuentran programas que están bajo la lupa, como es el caso del 311. A la tan criticada línea de atención, Rendón le ofreció su apoyo al equipo que lo administra, y mencionó su creciente tasa de éxito como muestra de progreso de la aún joven iniciativa. Con respecto a las críticas, Rendón dijo que lo importante es ser transparente. “Hay que decirles a las personas exactamente cómo va todo, cuál es tu postura y qué obstáculos y desafíos enfrentamos como ciudad”, dijo. t was born in the Cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires in a warm November night of 2020. “What a moment to come into this world!,” is what anyone would say remembering how surreal everything we have been since then. Yes, the same year marked by the sanitary crisis, confinement, social distancing and face masks, was the year that Andrea Stefanoni, Carla D’Elia and Julian de Dios chose to “give birth” to La Mistral: a bookstore “conceived” in Argentina, which today raises proudly above calle Travesía del Arenal número 2, some 820 feet from Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun) in Madrid. The famous name, which pays tribute to the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Literature Prize, Chilean Gabriela Mistral, did not deserve less. “We were in the middle of the pandemic, and it was more a crazy idea resulting from moths of lockdown than a project. But that same day, we started imagining spaces, drawing plans, coming up with names and by the end of that night, we knew what we wanted: a warm bookstore, specialized in narrative, with lots of poetry, art books, small tables to enjoy good coffee, and if possible a small stage for presentations; in a few words “a place to meet that you wouldn’t want to leave,” reads the testimony that La Mistral owners posted on its web page. After designing the project, the three friends were convinced that there was no time to waste; and in February of 2021, Andrea Stefanoni bought a one-way ticket, packed her luggage and flew to the European capital with her dog Aurora. Spain is not alien to Stefanoni, it is actually close to her roots, and if it seemed that the shadow of uncertainty was about to peek its head —so typical of the current times—, it soon faded away in a city that has embraced her so lovingly, making her feel like at home. “My grandparents ran away from the post-war, with nothing, only a 6-year old daughter and no money, spending 22 days on a boat trip. I came over to a cleared land, they risked their lives. In my case, it would have been, at most, a failure, like many others you can go through in life. Everything that I found was positive, from people’s kindness to its sunsets on amazing skies,” explains Stefanoni in an interview with AL DÍA News. Continues in pag. 27 |

Today, a year later after landing in Spain and seven months after the opening of the place she manages, it is still hard for her to assimilate her success. Besides the acceptance by the public, they have received a nomination for Bookstore of the Year in the The London Book Fair International Excellence Awards, one of the most important awards in the publishing world. La Mistral is competing in this category against Norli Universitetsgata from Norway and Rahva Ramat Viru Store from Estonia. “Awards are always very important, especially when they are as prestigious as the London Fair awards. We are very happy with the nomination, and I also think that it is important they chose a Spanish bookstore,” says the young Argentinian, whose professional career has developed inside a true shrine for books: the Ateneo Grand Splendid of Buenos Aires. “It is the biggest library in Latin America, and one of the nicest in the world. It gave me everything, and it will always be an important part of my professional and personal life. I started very young, at 23 years old, so almost everything important that happened to me, happened while I was working there. At Ateneo, I learned the good and the bad of this occupation, and now I’m putting it to practice, just in a smaller place and in another city,” she points out. This valuable experience in Ateneo, the carefully-picked book selection with Spanish-only titles, the magical shop window facing the Street, and the historic enclave where it is located inside a the-

Sí, el mismo año marcado por la crisis sanitaria, el confinamiento domiciliario, la distancia interpersonal y las mascarillas, fue el elegido por Andrea Stefanoni, Carla D’Elia y Julián de Dios para ‘dar a luz’ a ‘La Mistral’, una librería concebida en Argentina y que hoy se erige con distinción sobre la calle Travesía del Arenal número 2, a escasos 250 metros de la Puerta del Sol en Madrid. Y el célebre nombre, un homenaje a la primera mujer iberoamericana en ganar el premio Nobel de Literatura, la chilena Gabriela Mistral, no lo merecía menos. “Estábamos en plena pandemia y parecía más una locura producto de meses de encierro que un proyecto. Pero ese mismo día comenzamos a imaginar espacios, hacer planos, tirar nombres y al terminar la noche sabíamos lo que queríamos: una librería cálida, especializada en narrativa, con mucha poesía, libros de arte, mesitas para disfrutar un buen café, si es posible un pequeño escenario para presentaciones, en pocas palabras ‘un lugar de encuentro del que no te quieras ir’”, reza el testimonio de los propietarios de ‘La Mistral’ recogido en su página web. Tras diseñar el proyecto, los tres amigos estaban convencidos de que no había tiempo que perder; por lo que en febrero del 2021, Andrea Stefanoni compró un pasaje solo ida, preparó sus maletas y llegó a la capital española acompañada de su perra Aurora.

España no es ajena a Stefanoni, es cercana a sus raíces. Si bien parecía que la sombra de la incertidumbre -propia de los tiempos que corren- se asomaba, pronto de nuevo se diluyó en una ciudad que la ha acogido cálidamente, haciéndola sentir como en casa. “Mis abuelos se fueron huyendo de la posguerra, sin nada, con una hija de seis años, sin dinero y 22 días de viaje en barco. Yo vine ya con el terreno limpio, ellos se jugaron la vida. Lo mío, como mucho, podría haber sido un fracaso, como tantos que uno tiene a lo largo de la vida. Pero todo lo que encontré fue positivo, desde la amabilidad de la gente, hasta sus tardes de cielos inverosímiles”, explica Stefanoni en entrevista con AL DÍA. Hoy, un año después de haber aterrizado en España y a siete meses de la apertura del local que dirige, todavía le cuesta asimilar el éxito. A esta gran aceptación del público se ha sumado la nominación a ‘Librería del año’ en los ‘Premios a la Excelencia de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Londres’, uno de los más importantes del mundo editorial. ‘La Mistral’ compite en esta categoría con ‘Norli Universitetsgata’, de Noruega, y ‘Rahva Ramat Viru Store’, de Estonia. “Los reconocimientos son muy importantes siempre, sobre todo cuando vienen de sitios con tanto prestigio como lo es la Feria de Londres. Estamos felices con la nominación y también creo que es importante que una librería española haya sido elegida”, dice la joven argentina que ha desarrollado su carrera profesional en un verdadero templo del libro: ‘El Ateneo Grand Splendid’, de Buenos Aires. “Es la librería más grande de Latinoamérica y una de las más lindas del mundo. Me lo ha dado todo y siempre será una parte importante de mi vida laboral y personal. Empecé muy chica, con 23 años, así que casi todo lo importante que me pasó en la vida me pasó mientras trabajaba allí. En ‘El Ateneo’ aprendí lo bueno y lo malo de esta profesión y ahora lo que hago es ponerlo en práctica, pero en un lugar mucho más pequeño y en otra ciudad”, señala. esidente’s last video clip, “This Is not America,” begins with a shot to the air by activist Lolita Lebron. With an excellent film production, Residente charged back to vindicate the wounds, oblivion and injustice suffered throughout Latin America. After the shot by the actress playing the Puertorrican militant, who in 1954 challenged the House of Representatives of the United States to demand the independence of her country, Rene Perez (Residente) reminds the world: “we are here, hey, we are here.” The popular Puertorrican rapper that became popular as the lead singer of Calle 13, is not in the headlines for announcing his retirement, or his dialectical confrontation with J Balvin. With his impactful “This is not America,” Residente lets out a cry for Latin American unity. The musical bed featuring drum percussion brings a rhythm of suspense with lyrics that strike a sensible cord of Colombians, Brazilians and Venezuelans. A whole continent that has suffered hardship and struggle, with a lot of parallels between its nations.

In Rolling Stone magazine, where Residente appears with a naked torso and the title of his latest hit painted on the skin, is commented that art is above business for the rapper who is in the final days of his career as a singer.

Once inside, there is not a person who is not mesmerized with the ancient architecture, the minimalist decor, the wooden staircase, the boiserie walls, the stage and the hidden door connecting the bookstore and the theater. In the first floor, there is a cafeteria where the visitors can delight themselves with coffee and typical treats from Argentina and the Southern Cone of Latin America — like “alfajores” and “dulce de leche” (milk jam) cones —, all of these while you are being guided by an expert eager to suggest titles going from novels and essays to poem anthologies. “A book I always recommend is “Las Primas” (The Cousins) by Aurora Venturini. Sometimes, I even give it away,” comments Stefanoni as her loyal and inseparable stares at her mate Aurora, who is also named after “Las Primas” author. Even if she has made Madrid her home, and her avid readers and curious tourists make her feel sheltered, Stefanoni confesses that her homeland con-

stantly caresses her memory. “I always say that I don’t feel any longing, but it’s not true. I do miss my homeland. I miss going for a ride in the car listening to music any given rainy night in San Telmo with my friend Juan Martin. I miss some dishes, the neighborhood, the coffee I had every morning in the same place. But I also miss some people that are gone.” For a moment, she lets nostalgia go, she prepares herself coffee for a reader, assists another client, and another. Stefanoni looks free and happy in her world. It will probably be by the end of the day, when the lights are off, and silence is the breathing air at La Mistral, when she will remember that in the coming weeks she will know the results of the London Fair awards. Until then, we say good-bye, and like any other good book advisor she recommends that in the same way we have visited her store, we should soon go check La Central on calle Mallorca in Ciudad Condal. “I have beautiful memories over there,” she finally says. z

que no añoro, pero miento. Sí, extraño mi tierra natal. Extraño ir en el coche escuchando música una noche cualquiera de lluvia por San Telmo con mi amigo Juan Martín, extraño algunas comidas, el barrio, el café que me tomaba todas las mañanas en el mismo lugar. Pero también extraño a personas que ya no están”, enfatiza. Por un momento, deja pasar la nostalgia, le prepara un café a una lectora, atiende a otro cliente y después a otro. NOTICE OF PROPOSED NATURAL GAS RATE CHANGES To Our Customers: PECO is filing a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to increase natural gas rates as of May 30, 2022. This notice describes the company’s natural gas rate request, the PUC’s role, and what actions you can take. PECO has requested an overall natural gas rate increase of $82 million per year. If the company’s entire request is approved, the total monthly bill for a residential customer using 80 Ccf (hundred cubic feet) would increase by $12.39 from $95.31 to $107.70 or by 13.0%. The total monthly bill for a commercial customer using 400 Ccf would increase from $420.71 to $451.56 or by 7.3%. The total monthly bill for an industrial customer using 36,000 Ccf would increase from $38,087.83 to $38,557.43 or by 1.2%. To find out your customer class or how the requested increase may affect your natural gas bill, contact PECO at 1-800-4944000. The rates requested by the company may be found in Gas Service Tariff No. 5. You may examine the material filed with the PUC, which explains the requested increase and the reasons for it. A copy of this material is kept at PECO’s office. Upon request, the company will send you the Statement of Reasons for Gas Service Tariff No. 5, explaining why the natural gas rate increase has been requested. A copy can also be reviewed by visiting www.peco.com/MyAccount/MyBillUsage/Pages/Filings.aspx. The state agency that approves natural gas rates for public utilities is the PUC. The PUC will examine the requested natural gas rate increase and can prevent existing rates from changing until it investigates and/or holds hearings on the request. The company must prove that the requested natural gas rates are reasonable. After examining the evidence, the PUC may grant all, some, or none of the request or may reduce existing rates. The PUC may change the amount of the natural gas rate increase or decrease requested by the utility for each customer class. As a result, the natural gas rate charged to you may be different than the rate requested by the company and shown above. There are three ways to challenge a company’s request to change its natural gas rates: 1.
You can file a formal rate complaint. If you want a hearing before a judge, you must file a formal complaint. By filing a formal complaint, you assure yourself the opportunity to take part in hearings about the natural gas rate increase request. Depending on government COVID-19 mandates, hearings may be held virtually. All complaints should be filed with the PUC before June 29, 2022. If no formal rate complaints are filed, the Commission may grant all, some or none of the request without holding a hearing before a judge.

You can send the PUC a letter with information on why you object to the requested natural gas rate increase. Sometimes there is information in these letters that makes the PUC aware of problems with the company’s service or management. This information can be helpful when the PUC investigates the rate request. At these hearings, you have the opportunity to present your views to the PUC judge hearing the case and the company representatives. All testimony given “under oath” becomes part of the official natural gas rate case record. These hearings are normally held in the service area of the company, but depending on government COVID-19 mandates they may be held virtually.

n medio de las ganas de retomar el camino, de recuperar lo perdido y de poner en práctica las lecciones de la pandemia, muchos seguimos esforzándonos para convencernos de que lo peor ya pasó. Pero, el sentimiento de desolación supera nuestra estrategia de guardarlo en el armario del optimismo. Hoy la incertidumbre es el mayor reto y vuelve a aparecer como a comienzos del 2020, en medio de discusiones y de un panorama muy similar a lo que ocurría en ese momento. Despojada de mi condición de rectora y apartándome del privilegio de mi educación, comparto con ustedes que al profundizar en la crisis mundial la reflexión vuelve al origen, a la raíz, a las madres de los lideres que gobiernan un mundo lleno de violencia, inequidad, abusos y de falta de oportunidades. Somos mujeres en el mundo, tías, hermanas, madres, esposas, abuelas que hoy sufrimos las secuelas de la intoxicación de cortisol que, en palabras de expertos como la psiquiatra española Marian Rojas Estapé, es producida por el estrés. Es el miedo a la conciencia de que cada vez nos alejamos de ser personas incluyentes, dadas a la diversidad, solidarias de vivir en bienestar, de lograr una sociedad justa, tolerante, amorosa y próspera. Amanecimos en mi país, Colombia, como en otros países latinoamericanos, con noticias que parecen parte del guion de esa misma película, donde pareciera que los egos políticos nos dejan como niños llorones que no dejamos jugar con nuestro balón a quien no está de acuerdo con nuestras reglas. Hace unos días, absorbida por el mundo de plataformas de imágenes que logran convencernos de no hacer frente a nuestro aburrimiento, encontré una muy buena caricatura del mundo que me permito recomendarles. Se trata de la película No Mires Arriba (Don´t Look Up), donde cualquier parecido con la realidad es pura coincidencia, en la que los miedos existenciales están a la orden del día. Como mamá y ciudadana del mundo, hago un llamado a la reflexión, a unir fuerzas y a ser parte de un mejor mundo que evolucione y a no tolerar como sociedad la violencia, el maltrato, la guerra, las violaciones. A no ser parte de una caricatura dantesca en la cual convertimos al mundo, sino a perdonar y a superar los egos, a dejar la incertidumbre y el miedo que nos paralizan, a ser el escudo humano que necesita el mundo para proteger a nuestros hijos y a centrarnos en la educación, que es lo que requieren nuestros países y la humanidad para poder tener una mejor sociedad. z (*) Doctora en Pedagogía. s we are craving to return to our paths, to recover what was lost and to put into practice the lessons that the pandemic left, many of us are trying hard to convince ourselves that the worst has passed. But, a feeling of grief is overtaking our desire to keep it in the closet of optimism. Today, the biggest challenge is uncertainty, and it has reappeared just like it did in early 2020; amid debate and a scenario similar to the one occurring in that moment. Now, distancing myself from my dean title and the privilege of my education, I want to share with you that after going deeper into the world crisis; my thoughts go back to the origin, to the mothers of the leaders who govern a world full of violence, inequity, abuse and lack of opportunities. We are women, aunts, sisters, mothers, wives, grandmothers around a world that today suffer the side effects of cortisol poisoning that, according to experts, like Spanish psychiatrist Marian Rojas Estape, is caused by stress. Fear of being aware that we are farther and farther from being inclusive, open to diversity, supportive of wellbeing, and of a just, loving, prosperous society. In my country, Colombia, and other Latin American countries, we woke up to news that could be part of the script of that same movie, where political egos would seem to leave us looking like cry-babies who will not let others play if they do play by our rules. Some days ago, caughtup by the world of platforms that lure us into not facing our boredom, I found a very good cartoon about this world that I would like to recommend. It is the film “Don´t Look Up”, where existential fears are commonplace, and any resemblance with reality is purely coincidental. As a mother and citizen of the world, I call for reflection, for joining forces and being part of a better world that evolves; and not tolerating, as a society, violence, mistreatment, war, rapes. For not being part of a Dantesque caricature in which we can change the world, but for forgiving and getting over egos, leaving uncertainty and fear that paralyzes us aside, being the human shield that the world needs to protect our children and focusing on education, which is what our countries and humanity need to have a better society. z (*) Doctor in Pedagogy.
