One of the conclusions of Gina Ann Garcia’s life is that she has never stopped working for the future of education in the United States, specifi cally “supporting a community that has been neglected in this country”, as she told AL DÍA in an interview.

Her trajectory is part of the central article of this edition, which highlights how she has managed to excel in the education sector.

California State University, Northridge, a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), was the place where Gina Ann had her fi rst contact with higher education and it continues to be part of her life. Today, Garcia focuses on the HSI and how non-HSI can serve Latino students.

Gina Ann holds a master’s degree and a PhD. She has been an associate professor in the Department of Foundations, Organizations and Educational Policy at the University of Pittsburgh for the past ten years.

About HSI, she states that “they have to embrace their designation” and “commit to support a community that has been underserved in this country”.

Institutions of higher education can become HSI when at least 25 % of their students are Hispanic. In addition, it includes low-income students, and colleges are eligible for federal funding.

Gina Ann’s job is to seek equity for Latinos on the part of HSI colleges. But she also says it is important to keep families in mind, as they are directly involved in their children’s higher education decisions.

HSI represent 18 % of colleges in the country and are expected to be 25 % in ten years.

THE MEMORY OF DOLORES DEL RÍO

In the Culture section is the story of Miss del Río, the recent book by writer Bárbara Mujica. The novel focuses on the life of Mexican Dolores del Río, the fi rst Latina to shine in Hollywood.

The actress was one of the main fi gures of the so-called Golden Age of Mexican cinema. “About Lolita, as she was affectionately known, I am struck by her resistance, because she faced many obstacles since she was very young, “Mujica told AL DÍA”. The focus of the story is on Mara, her hairdresser, best friend and who lived Dolores’ life closely. Su trayectoria hace parte del artículo central de esta edición, en la que se destaca cómo ha logrado sobresalir en el sector de la educación.

La Universidad Estatal de California, Northridge, una Institución al Servicio de los Hispanos (HSI), fue donde Gina Ann tuvo su primer contacto con la educación superior y sigue haciendo parte de su vida. Hoy, el trabajo de García se concentra en las HSI y cómo las instituciones que no hacen parte de ella pueden servir a los estudiantes latinos.

Gina Ann tiene un máster y un doctorado. Es desde hace unos 10 años profesora asociada en el departamento de Fundaciones, Organizaciones y Políticas Educativas de la Universidad de Pittsburgh.

Sobre las HSI manifi esta que “tienen que aceptar su designación” y “se comprometen a apoyar a una comunidad que ha sido desatendida en este país”.

Las instituciones de educación superior pueden llegar a ser HSI cuando al menos el 25% de sus estudiantes son hispanos. Además, incluye a estudiantes de bajos ingresos y las universidades son elegibles para la fi nanciación federal.

La labor de Gina Ann es procurar que exista equidad con los latinos de parte de las universidades designadas como HSI. Pero también cuenta que es importante tener en cuenta la inclusión de las familias, ya que están directamente implicadas en las decisiones que toman sus hijos con respecto a la educación superior.

Las HSI representan el 18 % de las universidades en el país y se espera que en diez años sean el 25%.

EL RECUERDO DE DOLORES DEL RÍO

En la sección de Cultura se cuenta la historia de Miss del Río, el reciente libro de la escritora Bárbara Mujica. La novela se centra en la vida de la mexicana Dolores del Río, la primera latina que brilló en Hollywood.

La actriz fue una de las fi guras principales de la llamada Época de Oro del cine mexicano. “De Lolita, como le decían de cariño, me llama la atención su resistencia, porque enfrentó muchos obstáculos desde que era muy joven”, le dijo Mujica a AL DÍA.
